  5. And now let's listen in to today's teaching.

  6. If you are joining with us for the first time, Time this

  7. morning, we've been working through this letter of

  8. Corinthians, the Paul's letter to the Corinthians versus

  9. chapters 12 through 14. And as we've been studying First

  10. Corinthians 12 through 14, we've taken some time to understand

  11. Paul's larger flow, of thought, and of, try to take some time to

  12. Define some terms for us. We're going to take a look this

  13. morning at the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

  14. And as I've mentioned before, Paul's primary, point is for us

  15. to understand, not each gift in Nuclear, although the we will

  16. understand and seek to understand that the larger

  17. understanding is what does it look like when the church

  18. gathers together? Like, we are doing this morning

  19. in corporate worship and how do we exercise these gifts of the

  20. Spirit and in particular in particular, the Corinthian

  21. Church, excuse me, the Corinthian Church was struggling

  22. with, how do they do such things in a mature way in chapter 12,

  23. verses 1 through 30, if we're going to kind of look at the

  24. flow of thought, again, Paul speaks the unity of the body.

  25. And then he points to the E of gifts that are given to them and

  26. then he goes on to speak about the most excellent way that we

  27. can present ourselves and worship which is in love to one

  28. another in love for Christ. And love for one another, it is

  29. for the common good that we exercise, these spiritual gifts,

  30. then in chapter 14, what Paul will do is it will encourage us

  31. encourage the church in Corinth to pursue that, which is

  32. building up for the church. In fact, the point is Paul is

  33. trying to instruct them on how to use to particular spiritual

  34. gifts to gift of Prophecy and to get the tongues, And pick that

  35. up in the flow. He is arguing that the thing

  36. that is best for the church is that thing that is most

  37. understood and we're going to work through that in a few

  38. weeks. Next week, most likely or the

  39. week after then finally what Paul does he give some order and

  40. instruction to the Church of a, how they should order themselves

  41. during public? Corporate worship.

  42. The reason I say that is because we can, we can get stuck and

  43. bogged down into the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

  44. And in the context of the passage we want, understand that

  45. the end goal is for us to worship, well, to Worship in

  46. such a way that is not only building up for the church, but

  47. also a witness to the world around us, and for those who

  48. would join us in seeing how Christ manifest himself in his

  49. people. And so we talked about that.

  50. The fact that every believer is gifted by God.

  51. And now we're talking about the gifts that are used by God and

  52. Paul points us to be open to the Holy Spirit and to be others

  53. centered. And to remember that the

  54. objective is love for Christ and that our worship should be

  55. orderly. Spiritual gifts are The common

  56. good of the church which are to be done in love for Jesus and

  57. for one another now, in First Corinthians chapter 12, he opens

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  58. by saying that there are multiple gifts but the same

  59. spirit and then what we ask is what are those spiritual gifts

  60. that were being using being used in the context of local church?

  61. So I gave some context last week as to the reasons why the topic

  62. of spiritual gifts is somewhat confusing and it's, sometimes

  63. unnecessarily divisive against Christians, I'm Not going to

  64. repeat myself this week. You can listen to that for

  65. yourself and if you need a refresher you can go onto our

  66. website and listen to that. I will remind us one thing that

  67. Pentecost, the reason why Pentecost happened in the

  68. Redemptive story of God is one to point us to the reality that

  69. the promised holy spirit is given to us permanently, and it

  70. is not just given to one people's given to all people,

  71. which is the foundation with which Paul says that we can have

  72. the spirit poured out on us. That all are gifted by the Holy

  73. Spirit. This means that the spirit is as

  74. much present with us today. Whoever we are, wherever we are

  75. wherever we come from or whoever were descended from.

  76. The spirit is, as much alive in us today as he was present in

  77. those in the first century. So we have been given the Holy

  78. Spirit as a gift and that gift that is given to us, is not the

  79. thing that comes and goes. But the gifts that the Holy

  80. Spirit present in US manifest themselves for the building up

  81. of the body. And so, in verse 8, Paul begins

  82. to list the things that are manifesting in the Corinthian

  83. Church in verse 7. He says that a manifestation of

  84. the spirit is given to each person for the common good and

  85. then what he will do is he will go and he lists the Fruits of

  86. the spirit. Not the manifestations of the

  87. spirit in verse 8. Last week we focused on the fact

  88. that to one is given a message of wisdom, through the spirit to

  89. another message of knowledge by The Same Spirit pointed out that

  90. the emphasis here is on the law, God's, the message that is

  91. producing wisdom and knowledge, that it is not a distinct gift

  92. of wisdom or gift of knowledge. But in fact, it is the

  93. knowledge. And the wisdom that is produced,

  94. by those who have the gift of teaching that To teaching

  95. produces in us, a wisdom and discernment and a knowledge of

  96. Jesus Christ and of his gospel and of the story of God, wisdom

  97. and knowledge are paired here. Together that serves as a result

  98. of someone who is teaching teaching and preaching from

  99. which a person will gain wisdom in life, and knowledge of God in

  100. the context of worship. As we move on to verse 9, Paul

  101. says that to another Faith by The Same Spirit.

  102. Now, this this Faith hear. This word is not saving Faith.

  103. The reason why we laid the foundation of say, you cannot be

  104. spiritual apart from the holy spirit.

  105. So, this is not a saving Faith. This word faith here is not one.

  106. That means that to one is giving Faith to believe, but it is a

  107. faith to have an extraordinary trust in God.

  108. In other words, this gift is not the tendency of The Optimist to

  109. be positive about everything saying that.

  110. That man, Everything is awesome. Everything is going to be

  111. awesome. That faith is not the the power

  112. to just see with everything Rose, The Rose Colored Glasses,

  113. right? Someone quoted it like this, The

  114. Optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible

  115. worlds. And the pessimist fears, that

  116. this is true. Did you catch that some of you

  117. live with people who are optimists?

  118. And some of you are pessimist by Nature, it's your temperament.

  119. You just? I don't know, but that's not

  120. what this is. Faith is not just just it just

  121. being positive about everything, d.a.

  122. Carson defines it. Well, he says this special

  123. Faith, enables a Believer to trust.

  124. God to bring about certain things for which he, or she

  125. cannot claim some Divine promise recorded in Scripture or some

  126. State of Affairs grounded in the very structure of the Gospel.

  127. This is a faith that is not claiming things like.

  128. Jesus Christ has said that he would save us because of his

  129. resurrecting power. That's a promise that's given to

  130. us in the gospel. This type of faith is one that

  131. looks at God's character and stands firmly on his promises

  132. seen in Hebrews chapter 11. If you're familiar chapter 11 is

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  133. known as the Hall of Faith, people, that looked ahead they

  134. didn't see Actually, what was to come, but they trusted that God

  135. promised that it was there. Modern examples of extraordinary

  136. Faith might be someone like Amy Beatrice Carmichael.

  137. If you're familiar with her, she lived between the eight-time of

  138. 1867 and 1951 and she was an Irish Christian Missionary in

  139. India, who had 28 at 28, trusted God and believed God for opening

  140. an orphanage and founded a mission in India where she

  141. served there for 55 years, trusting that God would meet her

  142. in that Act of Faith. Or perhaps you might be familiar

  143. with Hudson Taylor who was a British Christian.

  144. To China. Who founded the China inland

  145. mission spending 51 years there in China establishing schools

  146. and churches there for those who have never heard the gospel or

  147. perhaps you might think of Bill bright, who founded campus

  148. Crusade for Christ, as a Ministry for University,

  149. students trusting that God wanted people to hear the

  150. gospel. And so he stepped out in faith

  151. and trust in God for Ministries across the globe, he wrote a

  152. book called the four spiritual laws, he trusted God to raise up

  153. people to produce a film called the This film, he had great

  154. faith. He trusted that God would meet

  155. him if he moves forward in Faith Church Planters, people that

  156. start Ministries, people that respond to something that is on

  157. their heart that they believe God for.

  158. This is the faith, the faith to believe God for his promises.

  159. But we need not only look to these stories of a.

  160. So what we tend to do is we tend to take these men and women and

  161. we Elevate them, I just just kind of put that all before you.

  162. But the one thing that we need to Understand.

  163. Is that this faith is not a scenario for those who are just

  164. super spiritual. Again, this is we tend to do

  165. this. We tend to hyper spiritual eyes,

  166. people who do great things but Faith, exercising, Faith as is

  167. here. The gift of faith.

  168. It means that in every scenario and perhaps, even this local

  169. church and every small local church, some scenario requires

  170. the gift of someone who has the gift of faith.

  171. The gift of faith is distributed by the spirit as he chooses to

  172. boost. Perhaps may be flagging murder,

  173. all the more. Of his people, someone that says

  174. that. No, we're going to stay here.

  175. We're going to stay here and continue on.

  176. We're going to, we're going to persevere in small things or

  177. trusting God for things that seemingly look small to the

  178. outside world. Perhaps the local church

  179. pursuing an upward call of God, where they believe that.

  180. Perhaps, maybe we need to trust God for our budget failures or

  181. perhaps the provision for a youth group leader, or even the

  182. calling of a new pastor or even a decision that needs to be made

  183. regarding facilities or missions or meat.

  184. And need in the local church. What faith does this gift of

  185. faith that it. Underwrites are obedient to

  186. Jesus. Lord.

  187. And even the most seemingly insignificant member, which we

  188. will get to in the illustration of the diversity in the body and

  189. the need for one another. Even the most insignificant

  190. member seemingly May well be used to impart such faith for

  191. the whole body at a crucial moment of decision making.

  192. Have you ever experienced that or some little old lady in the

  193. back? Who are some little old man?

  194. Or some unassuming person stands up and says why I believe that

  195. we can trust God for this and we should move forward and

  196. everybody rallies to it and says that's true.

  197. And then it happens. And these are the things that we

  198. have been given in the body of Christ, where we do not need

  199. great vision, casting and leaders and strength.

  200. But rather it is any member in the church who might have this

  201. gift given of Faith. Extraordinary faith, Now, Paul

  202. moves on in chapter 10 verse 10, he says to another Gifts of

  203. healing, by the one Spirit to another the Performing of

  204. Miracles to another prophecy. What we're beginning to enter

  205. into is what's known as the miraculous gifts in the

  206. revelatory gifts there, / things that are miraculous being that

  207. there are Supernatural, they do not happen in the natural and

  208. then the revelatory things that reveal, what is on God's heart

  209. and then come directly from God, In the gifts of healing here.

  210. It's plural. The, the word, the Greek here is

  211. its plural. Its Gifts of charismatic.

  212. It is a pluralized world of charismatic.

  213. It's another gift. And these plural gifts are given

  214. by the one Spirit, the gifts of healing seem to be something

  215. that is for the various illnesses in various ways.

  216. If the verses in chapter in verses eight, if we think about

  217. eight overlapping with wisdom and knowledge of wisdom and

  218. knowledge, Or overlapping Paul might be overlapping these gifts

  219. here as well where he's trying to point to the fact that some

  220. are given Gifts of various healing.

  221. Is that perhaps in the early church, there were multiple ways

  222. in which people needed healing. They needed a miraculous healing

  223. and miracles as opposed to just healing Miracles.

  224. Could be something where it's either healing diseases or well

  225. or perhaps The Exorcism of demons maybe perhaps.

  226. Doing something that is beyond healings, no one really knows

  227. the context, doesn't tell you, but what we do is we let

  228. scripture interpret scripture and so what kind of healings do

  229. we see in the New Testament? Well, the healings of Jesus, and

  230. of the Apostles, if you read through the gospels, and if you

  231. read through the book of Acts or which I'm not going to work,

  232. walk us through there. You can do that on your own.

  233. You can read your Bible. That's why you have one, the

  234. gifts of Jesus and the apostles in terms of healing, they were

  235. direct. They were Dick and they were by

  236. word and they were by touch. They had an immediate impact.

  237. And so, as we went through, the Gospel of John, there was a man

  238. who was blind, he was born, blind.

  239. And one of the Miracles Jesus did was told him to see it was a

  240. man who was blind. And now he sees a man who was

  241. lame. And now he can walk a person, a

  242. son, a daughter who was dead, and now they are alive, direct

  243. healings. This is not kind of just a slow

  244. retrieve retrieval to health. These are direct healings.

  245. They were no different than what is proposed today in terms of

  246. the miraculous the miraculous healing if something is

  247. miraculous it should be above the supernatural I mean it

  248. should be above the natural did something that you can't explain

  249. other than the supernatural effect of God.

  250. Now where this comes into play, in terms of the need for

  251. maturity is that all sorts of people can claim, all sorts of

  252. gifts of healing. And sometimes, what we see is we

  253. see this healing of things that seem subjective to Nature if I

  254. have a headache, or, if there's something that I'm feeling,

  255. like, anxiety or sadness, or fear or perhaps, maybe I have an

  256. ache or something, that is not really a verifiable, it can be

  257. subjective in nature. Sometimes people claim that they

  258. have this Gift of healing. That seems to be kind of

  259. unarguable. It's like, it's like when

  260. someone says and we'll talk a little bit about this.

  261. Is if someone argues you that, the Lord told me, well.

  262. Okay, sometimes we throw that argument out there and it's hard

  263. to argue against that because, again, it is subjective in

  264. nature. So objective is truth.

  265. That is verifiable. It's it stated subjective is

  266. like, well, I kind of feel this way.

  267. Well that's it's kind of shaky ground.

  268. When I first, when I was first where this where this can be

  269. damaging is, let me share a story with you when I was campus

  270. director at West Chester University, we were on staff at

  271. Penn State for a while and we had, we had moved to West

  272. Chester and I was excited to be back the summer before I got

  273. there. The campus director had to walk

  274. through something. That was significantly, trying a

  275. handful students. Had a friend who had was killed,

  276. tragically in a car accident. In fact, I found out.

  277. Later that this student was actually a counselor at the camp

  278. that I worked at his name is Martin and he was a Godly kid.

  279. He loved Jesus. He was tragically killed in a

  280. car accident and before I was the director there, one of the

  281. groups of students decided that they wanted to exercise the gift

  282. of healing and they wanted to trust God and have exercises of

  283. faith and they wanted to trust God for something big and they

  284. believe that God LED them and told them.

  285. To raise Martin from the dead. Do you see where this is going?

  286. So, what they did is they went to the funeral and They begged

  287. for the parents, to let them come over the coffin and pray

  288. for the miraculous healing of Martin from the dead.

  289. Because one of them believed that they had the gift of

  290. healing. Now, Martin did not rise from

  291. the dead, he will one day, but he did not that day, but the

  292. hurt that was caused and the the pain that was caused and the

  293. witness for immature believing Faith.

  294. There is is the damage was done. When we move forward without

  295. understanding or teaching, this is why Paul is teaching his,

  296. this is why we submit ourselves a word and think through the

  297. things that we have been told in Scripture.

  298. When we subject ourselves to some false teachings or some

  299. immature teachings, we see the church act immaturely.

  300. We see people that genuinely love, Jesus, and believe Jesus.

  301. For great things, do things that are not warranted in scripture.

  302. And so, when we think about the gifts of healing, this was

  303. happening in the Corinthian Church.

  304. So in context, I want you to know that there were Believers

  305. men and women that had the gifts of healing in.

  306. Context. And also, like I said, the

  307. miraculous gift of healing does occur, but a particular gift of

  308. healing for a particular person to have a gift of healing.

  309. I do not believe and will look further at why, I don't believe

  310. that that there are individuals that do possess this gift of

  311. healing as per the abilities of the Apostles, in the first

  312. century or the early church. Again, this does not mean that,

  313. I don't think that the scripture leads us to believe leave that

  314. Miracles, have ceased. Only that specific people are

  315. given specific gifts of healing to go around and miraculously

  316. heal. As we move on, Paul says that

  317. there is another gift in. This is the gift of Prophecy.

  318. There is some confusion about what prophecy is and the

  319. questions about what prophecy was in, the first century is

  320. enormous. I can give you 12 different

  321. books if you want to read about them all like 500 pages, thick

  322. if you want to read them this afternoon I will be glad to hand

  323. them to you. Do your study on your own, the

  324. questions about what and was not prophecy or what was thought

  325. about prophecy, or the different ways in which prophecy is talked

  326. about in the Scriptures in the hole is is Myriad.

  327. But one thing I want you to notice is that the prophecy that

  328. Paul speaks about here. The gift of Prophecy is not a

  329. prepared preaching, and teaching as some might argue as they do.

  330. But it seems that it is an occasional and spontaneous word

  331. from God. We might look to the words of

  332. agabus and Acts chapter 11, when he had a prophecy for Paul or

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  333. even when John says that Caiaphas the high priest who was

  334. in the Sanhedrin prophesied that Jesus.

  335. Must Die for the sake of Israel. It is a spontaneous event.

  336. In fact, if you turn really quickly, if you just make a

  337. right hand turn Paul says that in the order of worship, in

  338. chapter 14, verses 29 through 32, he gives order and says that

  339. two or three prophets should speak in the other should

  340. evaluate. But if something has been

  341. revealed to another person sitting there, the first person,

  342. the first prophet should be silent.

  343. He's giving order in the context of worship, and so it is a

  344. spontaneous. Vent prophecy does not always

  345. need to foretell the future. It can speak to current

  346. circumstances. It may also be used to bring

  347. others to Faith since it reveals, the secrets of the

  348. heart. Again, in chapter 14, we'll see

  349. where that plays out. But what I want to see here,

  350. just to get a definition of what these gifts are in the context

  351. of the Corinthian Church. The gift of Prophecy is linked

  352. to having Mysteries and knowledge.

  353. That is not readily accessible Tom.

  354. Reiner in his book on Prophecy and kind of this commentary on

  355. this. He says, this at the prophet,

  356. the prophetic manifestation in the New Testament is of the same

  357. nature. Meaning it is the same

  358. substance. It, is it operates the same way

  359. as it did in the Old Testament? In other words that it was God

  360. communicating typically either through a spontaneous event or a

  361. revelation By His prophets which were authoritative and

  362. completely true. And so it is the nature.

  363. I think that we look here and we can't just come up with

  364. different ways. which the screen around the issue, I believe the

  365. gifts of Prophecy in the context of the Corinthian Church was

  366. such that God revealed to someone in this context, a word

  367. that was to be revealed and it was encouraging to the local

  368. church and as they heard they were called to weigh it to

  369. discern it and then the if it was indeed not necessarily true

  370. in terms of its specificity they were to deem it as not something

  371. that was prophetic and they were A move on.

  372. If we go back to Pentecost, if we think about Pentecost in

  373. Acts, chapter 2, Peter points to Joel's prophecy in Chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  374. verses 28 through 30 to in the last days, Peter says that, God

  375. says, I will pour out my spirit on all people that your sons and

  376. your daughters will prophesy and your young men will see visions

  377. and your old men will dream dreams and I will even pour out

  378. my spirit on my servants in those days both men and Women

  379. and they will prophesy. When we hear this, this

  380. prophetic word. This, this pointing to God's

  381. promise of the holy spirit being poured out on his people, what

  382. we understand is that this prophecy of Joel is to be

  383. Universal that there is no corner on the globe that the

  384. spirit is not poured out onto his people and we ought to

  385. expect. So, when Peters giving the

  386. sermon at Pentecost, the expectation is that, hey,

  387. remember the promise that God said he would pour out his

  388. spirit, it's happening. It is happening.

  389. And here it is. In the reason why you're hearing

  390. all of these different languages and tongues in the gospel being

  391. proclaimed is because this was the promise of God and

  392. therefore, it is something that we ought to expect.

  393. That God would manifest himself in the power of this.

  394. Holy Spirit, not just in the age of the Apostles, but throughout

  395. the age of the church and to come the spirit would be with

  396. his people. The spirit of Prophecy that was

  397. recounted in the process of Prophecy of joy.

  398. Joel suggests that this is not something that we ought to find

  399. absent. In any age, we ought to expect

  400. God, to prophesy through his people.

  401. And the prophetic Ministry was okay in the Old Testament and is

  402. now in the New Covenant, God's present word for God's present

  403. people. So, let me ask you this

  404. question, who are God's people? Who are God's present people?

  405. Say it loud and say it proud. Yes, right.

  406. Where do we see or hear his word?

  407. We see it in scripture, Jesus is the word in the word.

  408. We see God, we know God, we hear God in the beginning was the

  409. word and the Word was with God. And the Word was God, he came to

  410. his own and he revealed himself. God has completed his word of

  411. Revelation to us through Jesus Christ.

  412. And when we think of the words of God that we need for life and

  413. living, assisting, all of the word that is necessary for all

  414. time. And for all of God's people is

  415. contained in the scriptures in the The scriptures.

  416. And so, when we think in terms of the prophetic gift, now, as

  417. the church was growing, God miraculously, we look at history

  418. and we say to ourselves again, I rightly admit that there are

  419. those who might disagree with me, but I have to have to look

  420. at the scriptures, and I also have to look at the process of,

  421. how did God work in history? What's the big story and God

  422. shows up? And he does things, and he does

  423. things in such a mighty way, in a powerful way in history, and

  424. then it, Compass has what he's intended to accomplish and then

  425. there seems to be just kind of like, it's not as it's not as

  426. awesome anymore. You.

  427. Jesus Christ comes he ascends and now we're like waiting for

  428. him to return the Israelites were enslaved.

  429. He rescues that rescues down the power, and then he asks him to

  430. live for a couple hundred years in the land, just living, quiet

  431. lives and waiting for him and trusting him.

  432. There are ways in, which God manifests himself in moves in

  433. history. And at the beginning of the

  434. early church, we see these things happening and the church

  435. is exploding and then the churches established And then

  436. over the course of history, we should see certain things needed

  437. and certain things that are not needed.

  438. And when you think in terms of the prophetic gift, now we ought

  439. not to think of it in terms of the fact that there's an

  440. augmentation of truth, but rather there is an application

  441. of truth. Then in other words, a prophetic

  442. word. Rooted in the scriptures might

  443. be something that is found in the scriptures and can be

  444. verified by the scriptures but ought to be weighed in such a

  445. way in which perhaps someone might be right about how they're

  446. applying God's word to our lives.

  447. They might feel a nudge the Holy Spirit to share something that's

  448. on their heart and if it's in line with scriptures then we

  449. take it and we weigh it truthfully.

  450. I've had plenty of people who have given me prophetic words

  451. friends that have given me prophetic words and on And some

  452. of them have just said, hey, this is the way in which I sense

  453. that I want. I feel like the Lord is speaking

  454. and so I want to share this with you and they give me a prophetic

  455. word and I listen to them and they just they share with me how

  456. they believe that. The father desires for me to do

  457. all things that are good and too kind of like think through the

  458. way in which I've been called in to live in a manner, worthy of

  459. the Gospel. I'm like I think I've heard that

  460. before your recounting to me, something that is in scripture.

  461. And if it affirms with my Spirit, the things that I'm

  462. like, hey, I'm wrestling with that.

  463. Thank you for sharing that it's an encouragement, it builds me

  464. up. I've also had friends that have

  465. given me, prophetic words that God has told them that something

  466. or something is going to happen in my life and it doesn't happen

  467. in some ways. I've had things shared to me,

  468. that is a prophetic word and it has come to be the opposite

  469. thing. And it has been a painful thing

  470. was, like, why did you share that?

  471. That was, that was absolutely wrong.

  472. Now, I want you to understand friends that the Pentecostal

  473. understanding I have pointed to the fact that there's a

  474. difference between Pentecostal views of the gifts of the Holy

  475. Spirit and other particular views.

  476. But I want to, I want to point this out, particularly about

  477. what is the Pentecostal understanding of Prophecy

  478. Pentecostalism believes that the gifts of the holy spirit are

  479. alive, and well, healing prophecy tongues, revelatory

  480. gifts, miraculous gifts as they were in the day.

  481. Pentecost in an early church but it has laid dormant.

  482. So the four ways in which I want you to know that Pentecostal

  483. understanding of Prophecy is this.

  484. So it is one a direct Revelation from God.

  485. A Pentecostal understanding of Prophecy is that it is a direct

  486. Revelation from God. That the thoughts of God have

  487. come specifically from God to a particular person gifted with

  488. the gift of Prophecy. That to the words of Prophecy,

  489. frequently will include specific directions from God concerning.

  490. Earning his plans for the future three that the proper verbal

  491. form typically used, when a gift of Prophecy is given to someone.

  492. In a Pentecostal stream would say that it is God who says that

  493. I am, the one that God says, I who speaks is frequently God

  494. himself. So it is directly from God.

  495. Speaking through the gifted prophetic word about something

  496. in the future and it is God himself.

  497. Who is speaking? And finally for that because the

  498. sign was given In the Apostolic Church, it is a sign.

  499. So, prophetic sign that with the other signs get the sign gifts.

  500. They have been in kind of dormancy until recently until

  501. lately again. Like I said, the history of

  502. Pentecostalism comes up and about the at the, the 1950s,

  503. there's a Resurgence. And then from that point,

  504. there's a stream of Pentecostals and that says that the gifts of

  505. the holy spirit are now awakened in Alexis season in the church

  506. some would call it a third wave of the Holy Rohit, I don't have

  507. time to get into all of that now.

  508. But when you compare the understanding of a Pentecostal

  509. view of Prophecy and perhaps, what is the understanding that

  510. if God has revealed to us all that he is intended to reveal to

  511. us. Is if there is nothing that we

  512. need to add, John says that, if anything, if anyone adds to this

  513. Revelation, let him be accursed. There's, there's nothing we need

  514. to add Jesus as he's revealed himself to the apostles and the

  515. prophets and he said to him, go and make disciples of all

  516. Nations. Nations baptizing them in the

  517. name of the father, and of the son of the Holy Spirit, teaching

  518. them all that. I have commanded you to teach

  519. teach them to obey this word. That the necessity for God to

  520. add anything to his word, seems to be void if there's no need

  521. for God to add anything because everything that we have.

  522. Now some might argue with me on this but I believe that the

  523. prophetic gift is not just something that is given to the

  524. church as a means by which we might just know the future.

  525. But the prophetic gift is something that allows us to

  526. know. Clearly, what the scriptures

  527. say, and they ought to be weighed carefully.

  528. So as we move on, Paul says that there is another gift to

  529. another. There is distinguishing between

  530. Spears. This is plain and simple

  531. discernment, just discernment deciding what is true from what

  532. is false John. And first John Chapter 4, verses

    1 John 4:1–3

  533. 1 through 3 says that we are to test the spirits to see if they

  534. are from God. And the reason is because he

  535. says many false prophets have gone out into the world at the

  536. time of the early church, there were many false prophets.

  537. For many, who would come in and teach that which was not true,

  538. but they were called to discern and to test the spirits Jesus

  539. himself in Matthew chapter 7 says not everyone who says Lord

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  540. Lord and teaches and does these things that are in my name will

  541. be ones. That I know they might do things

  542. in the name of me but they may not be.

  543. In fact, lie for me or with me, this is discernment.

  544. You can see throughout the Book of Acts and all of the gospels.

  545. If you read through the New Testament, you see that the

  546. apostles And the churches are exhorted to discern to teach

  547. through false teaching and lying spirits that they are to

  548. discern. Everything that is thrown at the

  549. church, as it advances, the Gates of Hell to beat down the

  550. doors deception, half-truths, we are called to discern today, to

  551. discern, what it is, that is true and what is not and the

  552. only way, how do we discern? Well it's if we discern, if we

  553. have the knowledge of God and the wisdom of God and the

  554. teaching of God and we have his word with us.

  555. And so the more we learn Of God's word and we think his

  556. thoughts after him, the more were able to discern but the

  557. gift of discernment is Discerning.

  558. Which spirit is speaking again remembered the beginning of this

  559. chapter where someone was saying Jesus is cursed in the context

  560. of the corporate worship? If you look at verse 3, Paul is

  561. saying, you can't say that if you're filled with the Holy

  562. Spirit, it just doesn't work. Discerning.

  563. Discerning. Here's some bonus gifts for you

  564. that are listed by Paul and First Corinthians 2 chapter 12.

  565. The same 12. If you go forward and verse 28,

  566. I figured I would just throw all the gifts in here.

  567. You ready? Paul says, and God has appointed

  568. different offices in the church and he lifts other gifts that

  569. are not listed in. This first one, there's the gift

  570. of helping and the gift of leading or which otherwise known

  571. as Administration and helping this is the the word that is

  572. used as a very general term for use of Of all kinds of

  573. assistance. It's to lift people up and to

  574. Loops, this is the Greek word, it's to lift up people.

  575. The second word is translated leading or Administration.

  576. And in the plural, it indicates various leading leading

  577. positions of the body of Christ. It's typically used in the Greek

  578. for piloting or steering a ship. So you have some people that are

  579. able to come alongside and assist and there's some people

  580. that are not there's some people that Have come alongside of us

  581. and have tried to help and let's be honest.

  582. You've been like you have helped me absolutely in no way and I

  583. would appreciate if you do not offer your advice anymore but

  584. then there are those who do, you know, the people who help you,

  585. you're just like man they just come into your life and they

  586. just like man, thank you for that.

  587. That's you there's no way you would have been able to do that

  588. and they help you and they do it with joy.

  589. People that just know how to steer things.

  590. They know how to take things in a particular direction and they

  591. Do it? Well, this gift of leading is

  592. not the offices of Pastor teacher Elder, but this gift of

  593. leading means that people are able to lead in a particular way

  594. where people will follow them and it will go well in Romans,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  595. chapter 12, Paul lists other gifts, he lifts the lift, the

  596. gift of exhortation, which is emboldening another and belief

  597. or a course of action. It's to give encouragement to

  598. make a strong request to make an appeal to lift another ones

  599. spirits to come. Order to consolidate the

  600. consulate. When someone exhort you to do

  601. something, you want to do it, they have this gift with a

  602. embolden you and they give you great courage.

  603. To another is given the gift of giving.

  604. This giving here is giving with generosity, he gives an

  605. adjective. He says, when you give give

  606. generously that giving, there is someone that can give resources

  607. to help another more than likely in the first century Church.

  608. There were were two types of people, the very rich and the

  609. very poor. There was no middle class and so

  610. Paul often speaks to those who are giving and to give

  611. generously those who have resources and even those who do

  612. not like the Philippian Church, they give out of their love for

  613. Paul and they give generously liberally without thought of

  614. their own selves for the common good.

  615. They give there's another word of leadership here and that is

  616. another exercise of leadership where they do it with, with Zeal

  617. with diligence, with haste, with speed.

  618. And Paul tells the Roman Church has, some are given that gift of

  619. leading where they do it diligently, where they want to

  620. lead, they want to take on a responsibility and they go with

  621. it or perhaps the one who has given the gift of Mercy, they

  622. show Mercy with cheerfulness that cheerfulness.

  623. Word is hilarity tests which is where we get the word hell.

  624. Are idiots. We do it with cheer with joy.

  625. We show Mercy where it is a joy to get down on our knees and to

  626. show Mercy to someone. In First Peter Paul lists two

  627. more gifts, the one who speaks in the one who serves Lalo and

  628. DNA 0, which is again, where we get the word Deacon, a, or we

  629. get Deacon one who serves one, who speaks Paul speaks to Peter,

  630. speaks to two different gifts, the teacher, and the servant,

  631. the Deacon, the pastor, the Elder, the Deacon, they have

  632. been given gifts to do this. Now I'm going to, I'm going to

  633. burst some of your Bubbles and I'm going to show you that one

  634. of the things that is not a gift.

  635. It's not a spiritual gift is the gift of hospitality.

  636. How many of you believe that you have the gift of hospitality?

  637. Come on. Some of you are loved to be

  638. hospitable. But what Peter says is that the

  639. gift of hospitality is not necessarily, it's not listed as

  640. a spiritual gift. It's actually listed as

  641. something that we're all to do. We're all to do.

  642. And what does hospitality mean hospitalities that generous and

  643. gracious treatment of guests? It's people in need of temporary

  644. shelter and food because of travel or necessity.

  645. Christians are generally urge to show Hospitality to everyone.

  646. We don't need to wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit to for

  647. us to take in people Hospitality in the context of the first

  648. century church are the fact that people were poor and without a

  649. home and they were kicked out of their families and Hospitality

  650. very much meant taking in an apostle who was preaching or

  651. Paul in his servants. Taking them into their homes and

  652. feeding them and extending Grace, and kindness to them and

  653. and giving them everything that they need while they were on the

  654. road. And so hospitality is not a

  655. spiritual gift but it's something that we all have to

  656. do. Sorry.

  657. Andrew your but you are, you can be hospitable.

  658. And so those those are the gifts of the Spirit that we come up to

  659. an end with the tongues, and the interpretation of tongues.

  660. And again, what I want you to do is know what these gifts are.

  661. So we have people that are helping and leading their

  662. Discerning, they're teaching their preaching, they're they're

  663. revealing words of God to the Corinthian Church, there are

  664. people that are speaking in tongues and then Paul is saying

  665. there needs to be an interpretation of tongues.

  666. Now, I'm probably not going to satisfy you right now, but we

  667. will get to this eventually when we get to the point, when Paul

  668. begins to specifically in chapter 14, he goes after the

  669. gifts of tongues in the interpretation of tongues in

  670. their place in worship, but what I want you to do is I want you

  671. but I want to give to you this morning is, I want to finish

  672. this list and I just want to tell you what it is that Paul is

  673. talking about when it comes to tongues here.

  674. D.a., Carson asked that we need to approach a tasket at at

  675. approach the text and ask three questions, one in context of the

  676. Corinthian Church, where they ecstatic tongues were they

  677. ecstatic, was it just kind of like blabbering on with

  678. something that they kind of got caught up in their emotions?

  679. And the worship? Was it ecstatic?

  680. The other question is, was there content?

  681. Was there, actually something in their words when I say the

  682. Eagles are going to win the Super Bowl?

  683. There's content there. And because you knew what I was

  684. saying. It was a known human language.

  685. Was it ecstatic? Was it was their content was

  686. there human language on the balance.

  687. When we look at the text, when we look at what Paul is writing

  688. here, the evidence favors the view that Paul thought that the

  689. gift of tongues was a gift of real languages which were

  690. cognitive that is that someone other than the speaker would

  691. know what was being said, because the language actually

  692. existed, it was real. It had In tax, it had verbs and

  693. nouns and everything. And the language was either a

  694. known language of men or an in gelik language known only by

  695. God. The text is just clear that in

  696. this context it was either something that was known or

  697. something that was not known. In terms of the Angelic words

  698. that Paul says that even he speaks and Angelic tongues.

  699. One of the things we need to think through is when we see in

  700. Acts chapter 2, verse 11. What what carries over is that

    Acts 2:11

  701. those who speak Speak in tongues that they began to speak in

  702. tongues to proclaim the mighty works of God and the people that

  703. were present there, they understood.

  704. In Hellenistic literature the word tongue or glossa does not

  705. mean ecstatic utterances. It is always something that is

  706. understood it's not meaningless Babble and so when we want to

  707. make an argument for whether tongues was a real thing or not,

  708. Paul understands it to be a real language.

  709. The Greek is clear gloss. Mm.

  710. And something that was understood, what is unclear, is

  711. what Paul means by Angelic tongues and that's where that's

  712. where we start to get. It stuck and people will take

  713. one road or the other, and basically the answer is we

  714. cannot know for sure what exactly Paul is saying.

  715. When he talks about there is a tongue that is spoken and it's

  716. either an Angelic tongue or it is a known language.

  717. We just we just weren't there is just it is not possible for us

  718. to know, for sure. But what we can understand is

  719. the fact that it was something that was understood and Paul's

  720. emphasis here. This is where I don't want it to

  721. be. It's a speed.

  722. We don't need to linger here and try to figure out things that we

  723. weren't meant to figure out Paul's emphasis in this, whole

  724. section of the letter is a weight, upon the fact that the

  725. Corinthians were immaturely, putting this gift above all

  726. others, that it was so elevated. And it was so unimportant in

  727. Paul's mind that he needed to address, the fact that you guys

  728. are doing all of these gifts, you have such a gifted church,

  729. but yet you're taking this one gift and you're elevating it

  730. above these, all things and is starting to cause cause

  731. division. It is the edification of the

  732. church that is of Paramount concern for Paul.

  733. Turn with me really quick and we'll end here.

  734. I want to show you in chapter, 14 will get there, but I'm

  735. fast-forwarding. I want you to understand this,

  736. the edification of the church chapter 14 verses 6 through 12,

  737. He says, so now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you

  738. speaking in other tongues, how will I benefit you or edify you

  739. or how will I build you up, unless I speak to you with a

  740. revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching something

  741. that is understood? And then he gives the

  742. illustration that if instruments don't make a distinct note or

  743. they don't aren't played correctly, how do we recognize

  744. that? And so there may be different

  745. languages verse 10. Languages in the world and none

  746. is, without meaning words, have meaning, the most important

  747. thing is for you to understand what I'm saying.

  748. So be zealous for spiritual gifts, and seek to Excel and

  749. building up the church. Paul links interpretation with

  750. tongues, Because he believes that in order to be encouraged

  751. in order to be edified in order to be built up, you need to

  752. understand what is being said. And if you cannot understand

  753. what is being said, if interpretation cannot come

  754. alongside whatever, this gift of tongues was being spoken of it

  755. needed to be clear and it needed to help build up the church and

  756. that is what's most important not division.

  757. When we do things that divide the church, we do this with all

  758. things, we Elevate Republicans Or democrats, we Elevate this

  759. thing or the other thing. We Elevate things that cause

  760. division that are not supposed to be elevated.

  761. And the Church of all places ought to be the place where it's

  762. Paul is arguing. It was scriptures argues that we

  763. need to do all that we can to build the church and strengthen

  764. the church not divided. And lest we think that, you

  765. know, we dismissed tongues in the context of the early church

  766. or even or even today in 1st Corinthians chapter 14, verses

  767. 13 through 19. He says, therefore, the person

  768. who speaks in another tongue, should pray that he can

  769. interpret there, right there. Is that Paul links tongues with

  770. it is prayer. Therefore, the person who speaks

  771. in another tongue, should pray, it's in the context of prayer.

  772. It's the context of Prayer in the church or even private

  773. prayer. Look what Paul says for if I

  774. pray in another tongue, my spirit prays but my

  775. understanding is unfruitful what.

  776. Then he says, I will pray with the spirit and I will also pray

  777. with my understanding, I will sing praise with the spirit and

  778. I will sing praise with my understanding.

  779. He can compares the the proclamation of singing of

  780. songs, most likely, the Psalms that the Jews Who's sang or new

  781. hymns? That they were creating as a

  782. church, he's comparing the fact that when I pray, I pray with

  783. understanding to myself and I pray in the spirit but when I

  784. sing, I sing praise with the spirit verse 16.

  785. Otherwise if you praise with the spirit, how will The Outsiders

  786. say? Amen.

  787. I agree that you're giving of thanks since he does not know

  788. what you're saying. Verse 18.

  789. I thank God that I speak in other tongues more than all of

  790. you yet. And here's the thing, yet in the

  791. church, I would rather speak five words with my understanding

  792. in order to teach others also than ten thousand words in

  793. another tongue. Paul himself one prays in

  794. tongues. But Paul himself to says, in a

  795. set when he Compares, I'd rather speak five words in a than ten

  796. thousand words. He's basically saying you're

  797. never going to find me do this, what I do in private in public

  798. in church, because I'd rather teach him in preaching.

  799. Give you something that is clear.

  800. Now, why does he say that? Because they had such an issue

  801. in the church? He was addressing them

  802. pastorally. He's saying, you guys are

  803. elevating this gift which I do in private and he's a sensitive

  804. Pastor. He says, I do this as well.

  805. Like, I'm with you, I'm with you.

  806. Let's let's pray in tongues. But when you do it publicly in

  807. such a way that no one knows what you're saying, it is better

  808. that you refrain from that so that there might be order and a

  809. building up and people would understand Paul emphasized.

  810. So this is a strong defense for a personal prayer language.

  811. So if you have an experience of saying you have a personal

  812. prayer language and you do speak in tongues and you have come

  813. from a tradition where perhaps, maybe you have been encouraged

  814. to pray in tongues and speak in tongues in private, which is a

  815. private prayer publicly. It's always connected to

  816. interpretation. But privately there's there's

  817. nothing pastorally that I personally can say nor anyone

  818. can say is that you should stop that.

  819. It's when we practice it in the public corporate setting.

  820. Like this of worship, where we were to discern, how a

  821. particular local church, a church that is submitted to the

  822. leadership of the church and the teaching of the scriptures and

  823. the encouragement of one another to say, how will we worship

  824. together and Paul is saying That he prays, but he does it in

  825. private and then he will, he will move on and he will give

  826. them instructions on how to do that orderly and he will give

  827. some other instructions. So there it is.

  828. You are smart people. You can read and you can look

  829. and see if anything that I've said is is not true in the

  830. scriptures and you can study it for yourselves.

  831. I'd be glad to lend you some books that I've read on that.

  832. But we finished with this in verse 11, where does it all come

  833. from? Where do all of these?

  834. Spiritual gifts, come from verse 11, 1.

  835. In The Same Spirit. Is active in all of these things

  836. distribute to each person as he Wills, there's no hierarchy of

  837. individual value. And there's there is no one that

  838. has a corner or any right to any particular gift.

  839. The spirit gives as he wills and who is the Holy Spirit, giving

  840. the gifts for Jesus Christ, when he ascended to sit on the

  841. throne, had the power to send his Spirit to give his church to

  842. his people to his body, the gifts of the Spirit, That Jesus

  843. himself manifests himself to us. And through us when we exercise

  844. these gifts, when we submit ourselves to these gifts, it is

  845. Jesus himself serving us. Isn't that encouraging?

  846. That when we serve one another, when we exercise our gifts,

  847. we're not, it's not about us. It's about one another.

  848. And the reason why it's about one another's because Christ not

  849. came not to be served but to serve So whenever anybody thinks

  850. that they're joining a church or participating in a church, and

  851. is something that they kind of like, you know, it's just some

  852. sort of club or something that they have to do or check off the

  853. list. No, it's actually it's actually

  854. as Believers we are joining a local church so that not so much

  855. that we might suck all the life out of it, right?

  856. But that we might participate, In doing what we are called to

  857. do which is be the body of Christ.

  858. I get to do this every week and it is a gift of God.

  859. I hope that I do it with Clarity relative Clarity.

  860. I hope I hope that it's helpful for you, but we all have gifts

  861. to give one another and we give those gifts, because Jesus loves

  862. us and wants us to love one another.

  863. And so, as we as we move forward in this study, See, I hope that

  864. that's the thing that I want us to understand is that, you know,

  865. and I've taken quite a bit of time.

  866. I wanted to get through the list because I didn't want to be a

  867. part part 12. You know it's just spend a few

  868. extra minutes but how will you respond to this?

  869. This is what I want to ask you. Will you you pray like if you

  870. are a member of this local church, if you've taken the time

  871. to go through the membership process and as you're thinking

  872. about your own gifting, would you pray that the Lord would

  873. lead you? And show you give you patience

  874. and Bring it out. We need you.

  875. This local church needs. You, would you have the courage

  876. to step out and serve in whatever way?

  877. You may not know exactly what your gift is, maybe you do, but

  878. it takes time and patience for the Lord to lead you.

  879. We know what our gifts, our when we step out and face a I'm just

  880. going to do. This is the the Holy Spirit my

  881. nudge you, there might be an opportunity.

  882. It might be something that the Lord would have for you to do

  883. long-term, maybe not, but the way that we evaluate the gifts

  884. of the holy spirit as we We allow ourselves to be open to,

  885. however, the Lord leads us. And as we step out in faith and

  886. we use our gifts, what will happen is other people will say,

  887. you know what, you you're a great encourager.

  888. I love being around, thank you for your encouragement.

  889. The more you hear some of that stuff you move like I might have

  890. the gift of encouragement. Some of you are generous givers

  891. you give behind the scenes and you help people you hear need.

  892. And you like, you cut a check without even thinking.

  893. Nobody knows that you cut the check.

  894. Just a need is met some of you. I have the gift of teaching,

  895. some of you can teach really well and there might be

  896. opportunities for you to make the scriptures.

  897. Clear. And so I want us to have hearts.

  898. That would be open to that to know that the gifts of the holy

  899. spirit are alive and well in our lives, but to also evaluate the

  900. way in which we use those gifts and look forward to how those

  901. gifts might be manifested, which gifts ought to be manifested

  902. publicly in which met gifts, ought to be manifested in our

  903. own private time and how together with grace and

  904. patience. As a local church, we seek to

  905. serve the Lord Jesus you Using our gifts.

  906. But being gracious towards one, another who are still learning

  907. and trying to figure out how that works out in the context of
