  1. Amen. Come on, let's get ready to get

  2. into the word of the Lord today. Grab

  3. your Bible. Whether that is a paper

  4. Bible, your phone, tablet, whatever you

  5. have, e church, grab it and lift it up.

  6. And come on, let's make our confession.

  7. Say, "This is my Bible.

  8. >> It is God's word.

  9. >> It reveals to me.

  10. >> It reveals

  11. >> God's will.

  12. >> Therefore,

  13. >> therefore,

  14. >> it's the final authority.

  15. >> The final authority

  16. >> to which I submit

  17. >> to settle all the issues

  18. >> of my life."

  19. >> of my life. It's the standard standard

  20. >> of my conduct

  21. >> and the basis

  22. >> the basis

  23. >> of all my expectations of all my

  24. expectations.

  25. >> Shout it out. I am

  26. >> I am

  27. >> what it says I am.

  28. >> It says I am.

  29. >> I possess

  30. >> what it [music] says I possess.

  31. >> It says I am.

  32. >> And I can do

  33. >> I can do

  34. >> absolutely everything.

  35. >> Absolutely everything

  36. >> it says I can do.

  37. >> It says I can do.

  38. >> I'm a believer.

  39. >> Not a doubter.

  40. >> I'm a doer.

  41. >> Not just a hearer. Not just

  42. >> And my life

  43. >> And my [music] life

  44. >> my everyday life

  45. >> is the better

  46. >> after having heard

  47. >> after having

  48. >> the word of faith

  49. >> faith comes by hearing

  50. >> and hearing

  51. >> and hearing byar

  52. >> the word of God word of God.

  53. >> Let's ride. You may be seated in the

  54. presence of the Lord.

  55. Amen. Amen.

  56. Hallelujah.

  57. Yes, sir.

  58. >> Yes, sir.

  59. >> Hallelujah. Go with me with ma to

  60. Matthew chapter 12.

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  61. >> Matthew chapter 12 verse 43.

    Matthew 12:43

  62. >> We'll get there in just a moment.

  63. >> Last week we were talking about we

  64. talked from the subject make room for

  65. him. Yes.

  66. >> And this is a message this last week and

  67. this week preparing us for this fast

  68. that we are coming up on.

  69. >> We are on a a fast that will begin

  70. February the 17th

  71. >> through April the 3.

  72. >> Now let me let me let me bring a little

  73. clarity here. We have what we call this

  74. year called turndown Tuesdays. And that

  75. is the third Tuesday of the month where

  76. we turn down our place totally from 6:00

  77. a.m. to 6 pm. During the fast, we will

  78. not do turn down Tuesday. Our 40-day

  79. fast will engulf turnown Tuesday. So, we

  80. have two third Tuesdays during the fast.

  81. You don't have to not eat on those third

  82. Tuesdays. You eat staying in alignment

  83. with the fast and the restrictions we're

  84. already on.

  85. >> Does that make sense?

  86. Thank you, Jesus. All right. And so,

  87. we're preparing for this fast. And so,

  88. what we talked about last week is that

  89. we don't want to be the people of Isaiah

    Isaiah 58 chapter mention

  90. chapter 58 who fast but did not bring

  91. any type of disruption, discomfort, or

  92. disconnection to their lives.

  93. >> That if we are going to make room and

  94. allow God to do what he wants to do in

  95. our lives, we have to first allow this

  96. fast to disrupt our routine.

  97. >> Amen.

  98. >> Yeah. Secondly, that we have to embrace

  99. the discomfort that a fast brings.

  100. >> Understand something. You are going to

  101. get hungry.

  102. >> Do not spend the entirety of the fast

  103. trying to not get hungry.

  104. >> You and I must embrace this discomfort.

  105. >> And thirdly, we said we must disconnect

  106. from distractions.

  107. >> That when we do these things, we make

  108. room for God in our lives during this

  109. fast. However, God continued to speak

  110. and he said to me that it is not enough

  111. for us to just make room.

  112. >> That you and I must also fill the space

  113. we've created with him.

  114. >> Amen.

  115. >> We must allow him to fill the space in

  116. our lives because vacancy can be a

  117. vulnerability.

  118. >> A vacancy can be a vulnerability. Let's

  119. let's ride Matthew 12 verse 43.

    Matthew 12:43

  120. What an interesting text.

  121. >> Amen.

  122. >> It says, "When an unclean spirit goes

  123. out of a man, he goes through dry places

  124. seeking rest and finds none. Then he

  125. says, I will return to my house from

  126. which I came. And when he comes, he

  127. finds it empty,

  128. swept,

  129. and put in order. Then he goes and takes

  130. with him seven other spirits more wicked

  131. than himself. And they enter and dwell

  132. there. And the last state of the man is

  133. worse than the first.

  134. Now, can we just talk?

  135. >> That don't seem fair

  136. because I have gone through I have

  137. cleaned up. I have moved out what was

  138. bad

  139. >> and now it is empty. And you mean to

  140. tell me that I've done all that and

  141. still can end up worse in the end than I

  142. was before I started ever doing the

  143. cleaning?

  144. >> And for so long, I've always looked at

  145. this text and focus in on the the demon

  146. and the unclean spirit. But God began to

  147. lift a principle to me that that you and

  148. I must be careful because vacancy can be

  149. a vulnerability

  150. >> that IT IS NOT ENOUGH FOR US TO CLEAR

  151. things out if we don't fill that space

  152. with the right thing.

  153. >> You you know what I I found Let me tell

  154. you something I found. Now this is

  155. [clears throat] no this is not an Apple

  156. or Android moment. So just everybody

  157. just relax.

  158. [laughter]

  159. But you know what I found? I I found

  160. that our devices when you take when you

  161. when you have your device connected to

  162. Wi-Fi and you remove your device from

  163. Wi-Fi, your device does not just idally

  164. stand by.

  165. >> If you look at your phone once you take

  166. it off of Wi-Fi, it's actively trying to

  167. connect with the network.

  168. you you you once you take it off, you

  169. remove yourself from the network. If you

  170. will look, there'll be other networks

  171. that pop up.

  172. >> WHY? WHY? WHY IS THAT? BECAUSE THAT THE

  173. EVEN THE phone was not and the DEVICES

  174. WERE NOT MEANT TO JUST STAY VACANT.

  175. >> THERE'S ALWAYS A CONSTANT looking to

  176. connect with the network. AND AS IT IS

  177. WITH THE DEVICES, SO IT IS with us.

  178. that it is not enough for US TO JUST GET

  179. OFF THE bad network.

  180. >> Because we'll be always looking for

  181. another network to connect to.

  182. >> That's how some of us have ended up in

  183. bad relationship after bad relationship

  184. because we disconnected from THE BAD

  185. NETWORK BUT NEVER REPLACED IT WITH

  186. JESUS. AND SO NOW WE CONNECTED TO WHAT

  187. WAS CLOSE ALTHOUGH IT WAS HARMFUL.

  188. It's not enough

  189. >> to just It's NOT IT'S IT'S NOT ENOUGH.

  190. OH, THANK YOU, LORD. It's It's not

  191. enough, husband, to to not just not to

  192. just have that girl on the side no more

  193. if you don't feel that space with your

  194. wife.

  195. >> Uhhuh.

  196. >> Ladies, this is not it's not enough TO

  197. TO TO NOT HAVE THE work husband.

  198. They didn't know I knew about that one.

  199. Yeah. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Yeah. It's not

  200. ENOUGH TO NOT HAVE THE WORK HUSBAND IF

  201. YOU DON'T FILL THAT SPACE WITH YOUR REAL

  202. HUSBAND.

  203. [cheering and applause]

  204. >> WHY? Because you and I are always

  205. looking to connect.

  206. >> That That's why it's because catch this.

  207. If if you don't worship God, you going

  208. to worship something.

  209. [cheering]

  210. >> Oh. Oh, no. No, no, no. If if you don't

  211. worship God, THAT THAT'S WHY YOU CANNOT

  212. TAKE COMING TO CHURCH FOR GRANTED.

  213. THAT'S WHY YOU CAN'T TAKE HEARING THE

  214. WORD FOR GRANTED. THAT'S WHY YOU CAN'T

  215. TAKE AN ALTAR APPEAL FOR GRANTED.

  216. Because if you don't take the time TO

  217. CONNECT WITH GOD, YOU ARE GOING TO

  218. CONNECT WITH SOMETHING.

  219. >> And most often times the something that

  220. we connect with is damaging to us.

  221. It's not enough to make room if we don't

  222. fill the space with the right one.

  223. >> This is the whole premise of what Jesus

  224. is talking about. And I want us not to

  225. focus on the demon but focus on this

  226. principle that you and I must fill that

  227. space with the right thing.

  228. >> You and I must fill the space with the

  229. right thing. So today I want to talk

  230. about three things that that we need to

  231. fill that space with. We need to fill it

  232. with scripture.

  233. >> We need to fill it with supplication.

  234. >> And we need to fill it with catch this

  235. solitude.

  236. [laughter]

  237. >> Yeah. We we have to make time to fill

  238. these spaces because if we don't, we

  239. will fill it with something. The Bible

  240. says in Ephesians 5:18, you just write

    Ephesians 5:18

  241. it down for your notes. It says, "Do not

  242. get drunk on wine.

  243. >> [laughter]

  244. >> Yes, sir. It says, "But but be filled

  245. instead with the spirit."

  246. >> See, you and I are going TO BE FILLED

  247. WITH SOME YOU AND I ARE GOING TO USE

  248. SOMETHING TO FILL OUR LIVES WITH.

  249. >> And what God is saying is don't use the

  250. things that bring temporary fixes.

  251. >> With things and people and and apps and

  252. social media and entertainment, THOSE

  253. THINGS ARE GOOD. BUT YOU AND I CANNOT BE

  254. FILLED WITH THAT kind of stuff. Amen.

  255. >> Amen.

  256. >> Psalms 119:1, he says, "Thy word have I

    Psalms 119:1

  257. hidden

  258. >> in my heart that I might not sin against

  259. you."

  260. An empty heart is a vulnerable heart.

  261. Disconnecting from distractions is ne is

  262. a necessary step, but it is not the only

  263. step.

  264. >> It is the first step to transformation.

  265. And you and I must fill our lives with

  266. him.

  267. >> We must fill it with scripture,

  268. supplication, and solitude. Lord, help

  269. me get through all three. Let's ride.

  270. Number one, you and I must fill the

  271. space with scripture.

  272. >> Catch this. When I'm talking about

  273. scripture, I'm talking about reading and

  274. meditating on the word of God.

  275. >> Understand something. I'm not talking

  276. about right now in this moment. I'm not

  277. talking about sermons.

  278. >> Amen.

  279. No, in this moment I'm not talking about

  280. sermons because we can get filled on

  281. sermons. But what God wants us to do

  282. during this fast is to get filled with

  283. the scriptures.

  284. >> GOD GOD WANTS TO FILL US WITH THE

  285. SCRIPTURES. YOU AND I, CATCH THIS, YOU

  286. AND I HAVE THE ability for God to feed

  287. us from the word.

  288. >> Let me slow down. See, because we live

  289. in a day now where we have we have made

  290. sermons synonymous with scripture

  291. >> AND SERMONS HAVE THEIR PLACE.

  292. >> BIBLE SAY, how can you hear without a

  293. preacher?

  294. >> How can he preach unless he been sick?

  295. You need you need both. But what HAPPENS

  296. IN IN OUR GENERATION, we have put this

  297. down and picked up sermons.

  298. >> And when we say we're GETTING A WORD,

  299. WE'RE NOT PICKING UP THE WORD. WE'RE

  300. GOING TO HEAR A WORD.

  301. >> [cheering]

  302. >> But God WANTS US TO GET BACK TO reading

  303. and letting the word talk to us.

  304. >> See, I I remember we were feed we were

  305. growing up a kid, Lord Jesus. He's 16

  306. years old. He's 16. And uh I told you

  307. this story before when when we he was uh

  308. being fed and baby was feeding him. And

  309. you know, I'm the kind of dad I was just

  310. like really over the top. I was I was

  311. still heating his milk up at two. He

  312. too. He can drink cold milk.

  313. I was just over the top. And so I

  314. remember one day coming in and baby

  315. would put him in a high chair. She would

  316. feed him. And then one day I came in and

  317. she she she wasn't she wasn't feeding

  318. them. She sat the food there and walked

  319. away.

  320. I said, "Man, what what we got going

  321. on?"

  322. She said, "Baba, there comes a point

  323. where he has to learn to feed himself.

  324. I can't continue sit here and speed food

  325. speed food speed

  326. >> spoon feed.

  327. >> Hey, mark that one down for the end of

  328. year review.

  329. [laughter]

  330. She said I can't continue to spoon feed

  331. him.

  332. And as it is in the natural,

  333. >> so it is in the spirit.

  334. >> You don't you you hear what I'm telling

  335. you. You need the gathering.

  336. >> We need the word. We need a pastor. We

  337. need We need those things.

  338. >> But you have to be able to let God SIT

  339. YOU IN THE HOT CHAIR.

  340. >> SIT THIS BIBLE DOWN IN FRONT OF you

  341. [cheering]

  342. >> and feed yourself

  343. >> BECAUSE THERE'S COMING A DAY

  344. >> WHERE YOU AND I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET

  345. TO A GATHERING LIKE THIS. AND WE NEED TO

  346. BE ABLE TO FEED OURSELVES.

  347. the scripture to to to read and meditate

  348. on the scripture.

  349. >> Catch this. Hebrews chapter 4:12.

  350. It's necessary for us to to embrace this

  351. because filling the space with scripture

  352. is critical because God's word is alive.

  353. >> OH, THIS WORD this word is alive. THIS

  354. IS NOT A BOOK. DR. ALICIA said it's a

  355. voice.

  356. >> It is THE WORD OF GOD that speaks TO US,

  357. THAT TALKS TO US. ALL OF THESE YEARS

  358. LATER, THIS BOOK IS STILL RELEVANT. YES.

  359. >> Hebrews chap 4:12

  360. it says, "For the word of God

  361. >> is alive

  362. >> and active, and it is sharper THAN ANY

  363. TWO-EDGED SWORD,

  364. >> PENETRATING EVEN TO DIVIDE SOUL AND

  365. SPIRIT,

  366. >> joints and marrow. IT JUDGES THE

  367. THOUGHTS and attitudes OF THE HEART."

  368. CAN I TELL YOU SOMETHING? THE REASON WHY

  369. YOU AND I NEED TO GET FILLED with this

  370. spirit, with with this word of God, is

  371. because we need something

  372. >> to HELP US DIVIDE GOD'S VOICE FROM OUR

  373. VOICE. [cheering]

  374. >> You can you can think some stuff

  375. >> and feel SOME STUFF

  376. >> AND FEEL IT SO STRONGLY THAT YOU THINK

  377. IT'S GOD.

  378. >> AND IT'S NOT UNTIL WE GET THE WORD OF

  379. GOD ON IT,

  380. >> RIGHT?

  381. WHERE GOD'S WORD CAN COME THROUGH

  382. >> AND CUT SOUL

  383. >> FROM SPIRIT.

  384. >> TO CUT HIS voice

  385. >> from my voice.

  386. >> TO CUT HIS VOICE FROM WHAT THEY TOLD ME

  387. IN THE BARBERH SHOP. TO CUT HIS VOICE

  388. FROM WHAT THEY SAID IN THE SALON. TO CUT

  389. HIS VOICE.

  390. >> IT'S THE SWORD of the spirit.

  391. >> Ephesians says it's the word of God.

  392. >> I know y'all nervous about this sword.

  393. It's just

  394. the Bible says that man shall not live

  395. >> by bread alone,

  396. >> but by every word

  397. >> that proceedth out of the mouth of God.

  398. Can I tell you something? The word OF

  399. GOD IS YOUR SWORD, BUT IT'S ALSO also

  400. your sustenance.

  401. >> IT'S YOUR SWORD. IT IS WHAT YOU USE to

  402. divide your thoughts from his thoughts.

  403. But it is also what it is that we live

  404. by.

  405. >> It is what it that's what's going to

  406. sustain us during this fast.

  407. >> Amen.

  408. >> It's the word of God.

  409. >> And catch this. I'm not talking about

  410. just reading the Bible.

  411. Oh yeah. Let's let's ride. I'm not

  412. talking about reading the Bible. I'm

  413. talking about you and I have to meditate

  414. on it. Yes. Yes.

  415. >> You you you and I have to have to

  416. meditate on it. Joshua 1:8, it says,

    Joshua 1:8

  417. "Keep this book of the law always on

  418. your lips." He says, "Meditate on it day

  419. and night so that you may be careful to

  420. do everything that is written in it."

  421. When I started to look at the word

  422. meditate, the word meditate don't mean

  423. just think.

  424. >> That's right.

  425. >> Cuz when we think of meditate, we think

  426. of yoga. All right.

  427. >> I was going to get down in the pose, but

  428. I'm not ready.

  429. >> But we think of just meditating and

  430. quiet.

  431. >> But when we talk about meditating on the

  432. word, this word meditate here means to

  433. murmur,

  434. >> to repeat,

  435. >> up under your breath,

  436. >> that that that you ought to get a

  437. scripture

  438. >> and hold that bad boy all day up under

  439. your breath. Yes.

  440. >> The Lord is my shepherd.

  441. >> I shall not want.

  442. >> The Lord is my shepherd.

  443. >> I shall The Lord

  444. >> The Lord

  445. >> The Lord is

  446. >> not was

  447. >> not will be,

  448. >> but is. The Lord is

  449. >> mine. [screaming]

  450. >> Not my grandmas, not my aunties, NOT MY

  451. UNCLE. HE'S MY [screaming]

  452. >> MY SHEPHERD. [cheering]

  453. >> THE ONE THAT WALKS WITH ME

  454. >> AND GUIDES ME and leads me.

  455. >> HE'S SO GOOD THAT I SHALL NOW.

  456. >> So you YOU WANT TO GRAB A HOLD OF THAT

  457. WORD AND AND AND WRESTLE WITH IT ALL

  458. DAY.

  459. >> I told you this story before. One time I

  460. went down to my my wife's uh we went to

  461. meet her for the meet her parents for

  462. the first time, Brooke. And I was so

  463. proud, you know, I put on my good

  464. clothes, got my haircut, all that kind

  465. of stuff. You know, they they country,

  466. they eat like eat.

  467. So we went down and I got my plea

  468. together and I'm eating and I had my

  469. chicken and I ate my chicken and they

  470. started looking at me funny cuz I was

  471. finished

  472. and I didn't realize what it was until

  473. after we got back in the car and she

  474. told me that her mama was upset with me

  475. because I still left meat on the bone.

  476. CAN I TELL YOU SOMETHING? THERE'S SO

  477. MUCH MEAT

  478. >> THAT'S LEFT ON THE BONE OF THE WORD OF

  479. GOD. YOU AND I HAVEN'T EXHAUSTED

  480. EVERYTHING OUT OF THIS BOOK. IT'S A LIE.

  481. >> YOU CAN GRASP PSALMS 23 AND GOD WILL

  482. TALK TO YOU ALL DAY LONG.

  483. >> One verse.

  484. >> He said, "Meditate on it. HE SAID THINK

  485. MUTTER IT UNDER YOUR VOID under your

  486. breath.

  487. >> Under your breath. AND THEN HE SAID

  488. PONDER. THINK ABOUT IT.

  489. >> MEDITATING IS ACTUALLY THINK HOW DOES

  490. THAT APPLY? HE'S MY SHEPHERD.

  491. >> He's my See, WHEN YOU START THINKING

  492. ABOUT IT LIKE THAT, THEN YOU START

  493. LOOKING BACK OVER YOUR LIFE. [cheering]

  494. >> AND YOU REALIZE HE'S ALWAYS BEEN MY

  495. SHEPHERD.

  496. >> HE'S ALWAYS [screaming] BEEN HE'S ALWAYS

  497. STOOD BY MY SIDE.

  498. THE LORD HAS ALWAYS I HEAR THE SONG IN

  499. MY HEAD BEEN MY GUIDE.

  500. >> Meditate on it.

  501. >> Meditate

  502. >> to put it under your breath. Speak. Talk

  503. about it to yourself under your breath

  504. all day.

  505. >> And then think about it. And then I

  506. thought this was interesting. It said it

  507. said it was like it likened it to

  508. growling

  509. >> like a lion

  510. >> getting ready to devour his prey

  511. >> that when you and I meditate on the word

  512. of God. IT'S NOT SOMETHING passive

  513. >> but but I have a passion about this

  514. word.

  515. >> I'M GETTING READY TO DEVOUR. THIS WORD

  516. IS GETTING READY TO FEED ME IN A WAY

  517. THAT NOTHING ELSE CAN. CAN I TELL YOU

  518. SOMETHING? YOU AND I ARE

  519. We

  520. We're getting ready to hear God in a way

  521. that we can't hear him when we fool.

  522. >> We're getting READY TO HEAR GOD IN A WAY

  523. THAT WE CAN'T EVEN HEAR him when we When

  524. you start to meditate on that word,

  525. putting yourself aside

  526. and you start leaning in to the word of

  527. God,

  528. >> you start making room and to start

  529. filling that space with him.

  530. >> Let me tell you something. You can hear

  531. from God.

  532. >> Yes.

  533. >> No. Yes, you can. You can hear from God.

  534. >> AND CATCH THIS. GOD WANTS TO TALK TO

  535. YOU.

  536. >> You know, Bishop, I have been saying all

  537. week. I said it last week. I said, uh,

  538. there's a part of me that that's not

  539. even looking forward to the fast. And

  540. and God said,

  541. but there is somebody

  542. who's been waiting for this time.

  543. >> And I was like, who, Lord? He said, me.

  544. Finally,

  545. I get you a sign. Finally, I GET YOU

  546. WITHOUT ESPN AND STEPHEN A. SMITH.

  547. FINALLY, I GET YOU

  548. >> WITHOUT SOCIAL MEDIA DISTRACTING YOU.

  549. FINALLY, it's me and you.

  550. >> When we was at the marriage retreat,

  551. Lord have mercy. I got when we were at

  552. the marriage retreat, one of the things

  553. I much appreciate about the marriage

  554. retreat is that finally

  555. >> we pull to the side and what I have been

  556. glancing at I get an opportunity to gaze

  557. upon

  558. >> see often times we just glance at the

  559. scriptures.

  560. We just glance at Lord my shepherd shall

  561. not want make me lie down green passion

  562. leave t still water store my soul that's

  563. glancing

  564. >> he said no no no I don't want you to

  565. glance I want you to gaze

  566. >> I want you to meditate in such a way

  567. >> that now you begin to see what is that

  568. Psalms 119

  569. open my eyes

  570. >> that I can behold wondrous things out of

  571. your law

  572. >> why Because now I'm taking time to look

  573. at it. And there's some things that I'm

  574. noticing.

  575. >> That's right.

  576. >> That I didn't notice before.

  577. >> There's some things that I realize that

  578. I desire and I want and it's been here

  579. the whole time.

  580. >> But I couldn't see it because I was

  581. glancing rather than gazing.

  582. >> Jesus.

  583. >> God said meditate on my word.

  584. >> Meditate. Fill fill your space, your

  585. mind with scripture.

  586. >> How? by meditating on the word. My God,

  587. Jesus did this when he was in the

  588. wilderness. Write down Matthew chapter

  589. 4:1. He fasted 40 days. And when he was

  590. tempted, he said, "It is written.

  591. >> It is written. It is written." He

  592. meditated on the WORD SO THAT WHEN HE

  593. WAS TEMPTED, WHAT CAME UP WAS NOT A CUSS

  594. WORD.

  595. >> OH. OH. I believe God going to help us

  596. to keep from slipping.

  597. >> Oh, I believe GOD GOING TO HELP US TO

  598. KEEP FROM SLIPPING. WHY? BECAUSE WHEN WE

  599. MEDITATE ON THE WORD OF GOD, THAT'S

  600. WHAT'S GOING TO COME UP. IT IS WRITTEN.

  601. >> You and I got to fill this space with

  602. his word. Oh, we got to fill the space.

  603. How do I fill the space? Give me slide

  604. number four. How do I fill this space

  605. with the word of God? Oh, how do I fill

  606. this space with the word of God? Catch

  607. this. Number one, catch this. I want you

  608. to start small. Start with a short

  609. passage each day and read it slowly and

  610. reflect on it. Somebody say start small.

  611. >> I don't need you to grab a whole

  612. chapter.

  613. >> Amen.

  614. >> No, I don't NEED YOU TO GRAB a whole ch

  615. I need you to start small.

  616. >> Secondly, meditate on a key on a key

  617. verse. Write down one verse that stands

  618. out to you. Catch this. And carry it

  619. with you throughout the day.

  620. >> Carry that scripture with you throughout

  621. the day. And repeat it, think about it,

  622. and pray it back to God.

  623. Woo!

  624. >> This is how we going to meditate.

  625. >> Thirdly, catch this journal reflection.

  626. Keep a journal during the fast. Now, if

  627. this your fast journal, it can be that.

  628. But keep a journal during the fast,

  629. writing down what YOU SENSE GOD IS

  630. saying through you, through his word to

  631. you.

  632. >> Now, understand something.

  633. The only thing your journal should not

  634. only contain morning devotional notes.

  635. >> That's right.

  636. >> Amen. Your journal should have some of

  637. the things that God has said to you in

  638. quiet.

  639. >> Your journal should HAVE SOME THINGS

  640. THAT GOD HAD. HE HEAR ME GOOD. Your

  641. journal should have some things that you

  642. have that God has spoken to you out of

  643. the scriptures.

  644. >> It should not just be all morning

  645. devotional notes.

  646. >> It needs to be some things that God has

  647. said to you.

  648. >> Why? Because we're taking time to

  649. meditate on the word.

  650. >> We feel catch this. Oh yeah. God,

  651. >> I don't need to just

  652. read the word. I need to let the word

  653. read me.

  654. >> I need to let the word read. I don't

  655. need just read it. I need to let it read

  656. me.

  657. >> Because when I let it read me, it starts

  658. to show me and talk to ME ABOUT ME.

  659. CATCH THIS. About areas that I normally

  660. won't look at.

  661. >> The word

  662. is like a mirror.

  663. I don't go to the mirror to read the

  664. mirror.

  665. >> That's right. I go to the mirror so the

  666. mirror can read me.

  667. >> I'M NOT GOING TO THE MIRROR TO JUDGE THE

  668. MIRROR.

  669. >> I'm going to the mirror so the mirror

  670. can judge me

  671. >> and the

  672. this can be uncomfortable

  673. >> CUZ I'VE GOTTEN OLD enough TJ

  674. THAT WHEN I TURN TO CERTAIN SIDES

  675. THERE'S CERTAIN THINGS I SEE, ANNA,

  676. WHEN I TURN CERTAIN WAYS THAT I DON'T

  677. see

  678. >> in other ways.

  679. >> That's right.

  680. >> WHEN YOU AND I GET IN FRONT OF THE WORD

  681. OF GOD,

  682. >> and we allow it to

  683. >> do what IT DOES IN OUR LIVES,

  684. >> IT'LL SHOW US SOME things that we Oh,

  685. God. It'll show us some things that we

  686. can't see when we in FRONT OF PEOPLE.

  687. >> [cheering]

  688. >> I DON'T NEED TO JUST READ THE WORD,

  689. >> I want the word

  690. >> to read me.

  691. >> I need to fill that space with

  692. scripture. Number two, not only do I

  693. need to fill the space with scripture,

  694. but I need to fill the space, catch

  695. this, with supplication.

  696. >> What is supplication? It is praying a

  697. specific

  698. prayer

  699. communicating your urgent need.

  700. >> Go to Philippians chapter 4 verse 6.

    Philippians 4:6

  701. 4:6.

  702. Philippians 4 Paul writes in verse 6. It

  703. says, "Do not be anxious about

  704. anything." Amen.

  705. >> It says, "But in every everything,"

  706. catch this, "by prayer and supplication

  707. with thanksgiving, let your requests be

  708. made known unto God." Interestingly

  709. enough, I've always put the two

  710. together.

  711. But in looking at it just a little

  712. deeper, prayer and supplication, Paul

  713. says, "I want you to go to God with

  714. both."

  715. Catch this. Prayer.

  716. Do I got my next slide? Prayer. What is

  717. prayer?

  718. Prayer, yes, is a broad term that refers

  719. to general communication with God.

  720. >> It includes praise and worship,

  721. confession and thanksgiving. That's

  722. cool. That's a part of what it is that

  723. we should do that when we pray, we bring

  724. these things before God. We engage. We

  725. praise and we worship. We let him know

  726. who he is. We confess.

  727. But he said, not just prayer, but he

  728. also said supplication.

  729. Give me the definition for supplication.

  730. Supplication, catch this, is a specific

  731. earnest request made to God. It is a

  732. focused and intentional form of prayer

  733. that is that is from a deep sense of

  734. need

  735. and urgency.

  736. When you get in front of the word of God

  737. and the word of God start bringing

  738. things up,

  739. >> it moves you from a place of just

  740. general prayer

  741. >> to where you have to now start making

  742. supplication.

  743. >> Where you start asking God specifically

  744. for his help in this specific area.

  745. >> You and I NEED TO FILL THIS time with

  746. God with being specific

  747. >> about what we need from him. Amen.

  748. >> See, DOC, PASTOR SHAWN AND I, WE CAN WE

  749. I I enjoy Doc. I can call Doc over to

  750. the house and we sit down and we have a

  751. conversation and we talk. Hey Doc, man,

  752. how you doing, man? Good, good, good to

  753. see you, man. You know, man, I just

  754. appreciate you for coming over here,

  755. man. All the things you got going on,

  756. you could be anywhere. You can come over

  757. here and sit with me, man. How you been

  758. doing? You're doing good, man. I've been

  759. doing all right.

  760. That's good. That's appreciation,

  761. >> right?

  762. But it's not until I said, "Doc, you

  763. know what? I got something going on in

  764. my life.

  765. >> Catch this."

  766. And and and it's it's anger.

  767. >> I've been getting angry. I've been going

  768. off. And

  769. I don't want to make any excuses.

  770. Can you help me? Can you help me stay

  771. accountable?

  772. >> That's good.

  773. >> To do the things I need to do so this

  774. this thing does not destroy my life.

  775. One is reverence, the other is

  776. relationship.

  777. >> One one is one is just me speaking and

  778. me enjoying each other and me honoring

  779. him. I appreciate him for coming over.

  780. But if I don't ever open up

  781. >> about what it is that I need.

  782. >> I never move into supplication.

  783. >> SEE, I'M NOT JUST ASKING HIM FOR GENERAL

  784. STUFF. I'm being specific.

  785. >> I didn't just ask, "Hey man, will you

  786. just pray for me?" That's not

  787. supplication.

  788. Amen.

  789. >> NO. DURING THIS FAST, GOD WANTS US TO

  790. get specific

  791. >> I know you got specific about your

  792. vision board. I'm not talking about that

  793. right now.

  794. >> I'm talking about about you,

  795. >> about me,

  796. >> ABOUT WHATEVER GOD BRINGS UP. Oh yeah.

  797. See, during this fast, there'll be some

  798. things, especially during these first

  799. two weeks, there'll be some things that

  800. you're not necessarily proud of that's

  801. going to come up.

  802. >> No, there going TO BE SOME DON'T QUIT

  803. THE FAST WHEN you see some behavior that

  804. you don't like.

  805. >> Amen.

  806. >> Because your flesh IS GOING TO FIGHT

  807. YOU.

  808. >> Understand something. WHEN IT COMES UP,

  809. lay it at his feet.

  810. >> When it comes up, it's giving you

  811. SOMETHING TO PRAY ABOUT.

  812. >> WHEN it comes up, IT'S GIVING YOU YOUR

  813. prayer list.

  814. >> You didn't even know you STILL HAD A

  815. CUSS IN you

  816. >> until you told yourself, "NO, WE ARE NOT

  817. GOING TO COOK OUT.

  818. NO, I I I YOU WILL NOT HAVE something

  819. sweet after you eat.

  820. >> You don't need it.

  821. >> That's right.

  822. >> You talking about a You talking about

  823. prayer requests coming up then?

  824. >> Father, I need you.

  825. >> This flesh of mine is out of control.

  826. It's trying to talk me into going

  827. against what I said I was going to do.

  828. God, help me to stay strong in my

  829. commitment to you. HELP ME NOT TO WAVER.

  830. HELP ME NOT TO GO BACK AND FORTH.

  831. >> Somebody say specific.

  832. >> Specific

  833. >> supplication. When I put it out there

  834. >> during this fast, this is not a time to

  835. pray. Married people. This is not a time

  836. to pray about your spouse.

  837. >> This is a time for you to let God work

  838. on you.

  839. single people. Y'all thought I was going

  840. to leave y'all out. Uh uh. Yeah, I KNOW

  841. YOU'VE BEEN PRAYING ABOUT I KNOW YOU'VE

  842. BEEN PRAYING ABOUT THAT HUSBAND. RIGHT

  843. NOW, IT'S NOT ABOUT PRAYING ABOUT THAT

  844. HUSBAND. LORD, make me whole. [cheering]

  845. >> LORD, MAKE LORD, HELP ME. HELP ME, LORD.

  846. SO, SO THAT SO THAT SO THAT uh so that

  847. my con so I don't automatically to just

  848. just connect with any network that's

  849. around. [cheering]

  850. GOD, FORTIFY ME AND GIVE me the the the

  851. staying power to to stand long enough TO

  852. AT LEAST EVALUATE TO SEE IF THEY GOT

  853. SOME SENSE.

  854. >> HELP ME NOT TO BE SO HORNY AND SO

  855. DESPERATE. [cheering]

  856. >> OH Y'ALL. YEAH. HELP ME, LORD. GIVE ME

  857. STAYING POWER.

  858. >> SOMEBODY SHOUT SPECIFIC.

  859. >> SPECIFIC.

  860. make my supplication.

  861. >> Put it out there.

  862. >> NOT ON SOCIAL MEDIA WITH GOD.

  863. >> GOD, this is where I am. This is what I

  864. need.

  865. >> I need this from you. And Lord, and it's

  866. a sense of urgency. Hey Lord, if you

  867. don't help me,

  868. >> if if IF YOU DON'T HELP ME, LORD,

  869. >> FATHER, I STRETCH MY HAND TO THEE. NO

  870. OTHER HELP I KNOW. IF THOU WITHDRAW

  871. THYSELF FROM ME, WHERE SHALL I GO?

  872. >> I DON'T HAVE NO OTHER HELP.

  873. >> I DON'T HAVE NO OTHER HELP, GOD.

  874. [screaming] I DON'T HAVE NO OTHER

  875. RESOURCES, GOD. I DON'T HAVE A PLAN B.

  876. YOU ARE PLAN A AND THAT'S ALL I GOT.

  877. [cheering]

  878. >> Somebody shout supplication.

  879. >> I need to fill the space with scripture.

  880. I need to fill the space with

  881. supplication. Oh God.

  882. Hebrews. Hebrews. Just let's write down

  883. the write 1 Peter 5:7. Let me at least

    1 Peter 5:7

  884. say this to you. 1 Peter 5:7. It says,

    1 Peter 5:7

  885. "Cast all your anxiety on him

  886. >> because he cares for you."

  887. >> Have you ever dealt with somebody who

  888. could help you, but didn't care nothing

  889. about you?

  890. >> SEE, UNDERSTAND. THIS IS NOT HOW GOD IS.

  891. WE CAST OUR CARES ON HIM, NOT ONLY

  892. BECAUSE he's able, but also because he

  893. cares.

  894. >> I'm bringing these things to him because

  895. he cares.

  896. >> I'm putting it OUT THERE BEFORE HIM

  897. BECAUSE HE CARES.

  898. >> SAY, cast your cares upon me.

  899. >> For he cares for you. Hebrews chapter 4,

    Hebrews 4:16

  900. verse 16, write it down. It says, "Let

  901. us therefore come boldly to the throne

  902. of grace that we may receive mercy and

  903. find grace to help us in our time of

  904. need."

  905. >> I'm coming to God because he has the

  906. power to help me.

  907. >> And he didn't tell me to come

  908. sheepishly.

  909. >> He said, "Come boldly."

  910. >> No, he said come boldly.

  911. >> When you need something, come boldly.

  912. I was thinking about that because even

  913. with my kids, I want my kids to come to

  914. me a certain way.

  915. >> OH YEAH. COME TO ME LIKE YOU KNOW WE got

  916. relationship.

  917. >> Don't come to me like no peasant or no

  918. somebody on the street. I can see

  919. somebody on the street come you know

  920. what pastor tread do you know you think

  921. you might be able to

  922. I CAN UNDERSTAND THAT QUESTION CUZ THEY

  923. DON'T KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT THEM.

  924. >> That's right.

  925. >> But these two right here I need them TO

  926. COME TO ME JUST LIKE OKAY THEY JUST GOT

  927. THROUGH DOING WRONG. THEY DEAD. I NEED

  928. SOMETHING.

  929. >> WHY? Because they understand that I care

  930. for them.

  931. >> They understand that their concerns and

  932. what it is that bothers them or matters

  933. to them, it matters to me.

  934. >> They coming to me NOT JUST BECAUSE I'M

  935. ABLE, BUT but also because I care.

  936. >> And God said, if you got enough sense in

  937. your world to do that, how much more

  938. >> do you think I want to be there for you

  939. in that way? Will you come to come to me

  940. boldly? Come to me with the

  941. understanding THAT YOU KNOW THAT I THAT

  942. I NOT ONLY CAN I DO IT,

  943. >> but I want to do it for you.

  944. >> That's right.

  945. >> Fill that space with scripture. Oh man,

  946. I want to fill that space with

  947. supplication. But thirdly, I want to

  948. fill that space with solitude.

  949. I want to fill that space with solitude.

  950. Now, when we say solitude, solitude is

  951. holy, quiet time in God's presence.

  952. >> Now, admittedly, this seems oxymoronic

  953. to the last two we just talked about.

  954. >> But if you and I are going to fill this

  955. space in our life, we need solitude.

  956. Solitude is not isolation.

  957. >> Solitude is not just emptiness. When we

  958. say what's solitude, solitude, catch

  959. this, is the intentional stepping away

  960. from the noise and distractions of life

  961. >> to be fully present with God.

  962. >> When we say solitude, it is the

  963. intentional stepping away from the noise

  964. and distractions of life to be fully

  965. present with God. Amen.

  966. >> You know, we were talking in the back

  967. about what it is that we're looking

  968. forward to out of the fast and what we

  969. want God to do for us in the fast. And

  970. and and the majority, we had all

  971. different things, but one of the the

  972. things that came up in terms of the one

  973. of the consensus of the group is

  974. clarity.

  975. is that we desire to have clarity in our

  976. thought life, clarity in our

  977. relationship with God, clarity.

  978. >> And can I tell you that that what we're

  979. looking for in terms of clarity is found

  980. in solitude with God.

  981. >> Silence, catch this, isn't empty. It's

  982. full of God's voice.

  983. Silence

  984. is not empty.

  985. It's actually

  986. full of God's voice.

  987. Sometimes

  988. we get so

  989. agitated

  990. by quiet.

  991. And what God wants to do is he wants to

  992. pull us to the side

  993. >> and just be with us.

  994. It feels uncomfortable

  995. at times. But can I tell you this is

  996. what God is longing for.

  997. He's longing for quiet time with us.

  998. There's so many things that are grabbing

  999. at our attention.

  1000. So many so many things I I I when I go

1001. to pray I, you know, I have to take my

1002. phone and like throw it across the room

1003. because even while in praying, there's

1004. just notifications and dingings that are

  1005. going off

1006. >> that pulls your mind.

1007. >> And even catch this. Even when you take

1008. the phone and throw it across the room

1009. and take the laptop and shut it down and

1010. turn it off, even your own mind fights

  1011. you.

  1012. [laughter]

1013. >> EVEN YOUR OWN MIND FIGHTS YOU. BUT I

1014. NEED YOU TO UNDERSTAND THAT solitude is

1015. not withdrawal from life. It is a

1016. retreat into God's presence to be

  1017. renewed and strengthened.

1018. >> IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY TO PULL AWAY INTO

1019. HIS PRES. OH, thank you, Dr. Alicia Brit

1020. Scholey and Dr. Barry Scholley who

1021. teaches us to just sit with him.

1022. >> It's just you don't always have to you

1023. don't you don't have to perform for God.

1024. >> You don't have to you you have to

1025. perform a lot for people. You got to be

1026. on for people. But can I tell you God

  1027. just wants you

1028. >> to be with him. You don't have to come

1029. to him with a whole list or dissitation

1030. or written out. Now, ain't nothing wrong

1031. with praying. We already talked about

  1032. supplication.

1033. But there are times where I don't have

1034. to fill that space with words.

1035. I can just come there and be with him.

1036. Many of the things that we're looking

  1037. for

1038. is going to be found in solitude.

1039. Many of the things we've been asking God

1040. for and begging God, God, will you just

1041. give me this? Will you just give me? He

1042. said, if you just sh

1043. I remember my mom, she was quick to tell

  1044. us hush.

1045. There will be times where we'd be

1046. anxious and and agitated and there was

1047. something that we want and and and we

1048. didn't realize that what we wanted was

  1049. already in our vicinity.

1050. We were just so that she was sh

  1051. look around.

1052. And if you would take time to look

1053. around, you'll find that the very thing

1054. that you need, the very thing that

1055. you've been praying for and asking GOD

1056. AND CRY, "GOD, I JUST NEED YOU, GOD.

1057. GOD, I JUST NEED YOU. OH GOD, he said,

  1058. [laughter]

1059. I just thought about you.

1060. >> Is that is that is that that first Kings

  1061. 19?

1062. >> We said Elijah, he said he he looked for

1063. him. He wasn't in the fire.

  1064. >> He wasn't in the wind.

1065. >> But the Bible said a still

  1066. >> small voice

1067. >> which says it is possible for God to be

1068. there. You and I miss him

  1069. >> because because we're we're so we're so

1070. we're so we are so worked up.

1071. >> But God said, "What I want to do in this

1072. fast, I want to pull you to the side for

  1073. some quiet time.

1074. I want to put you to the side for some

1075. for some quiet time." Mark 1:35, it said

    Mark 1:35

1076. Jesus got up early while it was dark and

1077. went to a solitary place

  1078. >> and prayed.

1079. If Jesus needed solid solitude,

1080. >> how in the world do you and I think we

1081. can just I feel my mama now. Rip and

  1082. run.

1083. Where my whole saying Uh-huh. rip and

  1084. run.

1085. How do you think we can keep ripping and

  1086. running

  1087. and not need solitude?

  1088. Isaiah

1089. got to bring this up. Isaiah 30:1 15

    Isaiah 30:1

1090. >> it says in repentance and rest is your

  1091. salvation in quietness

  1092. sh

  1093. quietness

1094. confidence shall be your strength the

1095. strength that you're looking for

1096. can often times be found in solitude

1097. >> the peace that you're looking for can be

  1098. found

  1099. in solitude

1100. The clarity that you're asking God to

1101. give you can be found in solitude.

1102. This how we live right here.

1103. Get up in the morning, pray on the way

1104. to work. God bless us. Keep us Jesus

1105. name. Amen. Get to work.

1106. Have have pray over your food. Bless it

1107. Lord Jesus name. Amen. Eating lunch.

1108. Scarf it down. Get back to work and you

1109. got to leave. Go pick up the kids. Fold

1110. the clothes. Check on your parents.

1111. Get home. Half watch the news a little

1112. bit. See what's going on.

1113. And then by the time you sit down,

  1114. your world is swirling.

  1115. Hardly any clarity,

  1116. >> foggy,

1117. >> but when you and I take a moment to sit

  1118. and settle,

1119. >> it's not all the way clear cuz there's

  1120. some gunk in there,

1121. but the gunk hadn't taken over.

1122. >> I've had time for it to settle. And if

1123. we really want to be technical, it's

1124. settled to a place where God can reach

1125. in and do something about it.

  1126. >> It It's settled in a place where I can

1127. allow the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, if

  1128. you would, Psalm 139,

  1129. >> 23 and 24, search me, oh God,

1130. >> try me and know my thoughts. And if YOU

1131. SEE ANY WICKED WAY in me, lead me in THE

1132. WAY EVERLASTING. BUT IF I'M ALWAYS LIKE

  1133. this

1134. >> and never sitting long enough to settle,

  1135. I'll never have clarity.

1136. I'll never have peace. And I will think

1137. that God has done me wrong.

1138. >> When in fact, God has been calling you

1139. into a moment of solitude

1140. so that he can show you what's been

  1141. there the whole time.

  1142. If you and I

1143. gonna make room in this fast,

1144. we need to fill, we don't need just make

  1145. room

1146. because vacancy is a vulnerability.

1147. >> We need to fill that space

1148. with the scripture. We need to fill that

1149. space with supplicate, earnest prayer

1150. >> and we need to fill that space with

1151. solitude. Let me tell you something.

1152. This fast is going to refresh you.

1153. >> This fast is going to refresh you. What

1154. God wants to do and he's going he's

1155. going to refresh you during this fast.

1156. Many of us can be like this sponge.

1157. This sponge is designed to clean,

  1158. to scrub,

1159. but in the current state that it's in,

  1160. >> it's no good

  1161. >> because it's dry

  1162. >> and it's brittle

  1163. >> before. But

1164. this how some of us can be in certain

  1165. areas

1166. >> in certain areas of our life. All of us

1167. >> have some area where we're dry

  1168. >> and brittle

  1169. >> and God can't use us,

1170. not like he wants to.

1171. >> And before he can use you like he wants

  1172. to,

1173. >> before he can do what it is that he

1174. wants to do in you, he wants to refresh

  1175. you.

1176. >> Before I can use this sponge, guess what

  1177. I need?

  1178. on Tuesday.

1179. >> On Wednesday, your flesh going to try to

1180. get you to get out.

1181. >> Just like stepping in a cold pool.

  1182. But no,

  1183. stay there.

  1184. Stay there

1185. and allow the presence of God

  1186. through his word,

  1187. >> through supplication,

  1188. >> through solitude,

1189. >> let him feel you.

1190. >> When you make space for, let him feel

  1191. you.

  1192. And I tell you, I don't mean I don't

1193. believe it may take the whole 40 days,

1194. but what'll happen is is that you'll

1195. become in the words of Dr. Alicia,

  1196. you'll become splashy.

  1197. >> You'll become you'll become splashy in

1198. the presence of God such that wherever

  1199. you go,

1200. >> you leave an impact

  1201. >> and an imprint

1202. >> that wherever you been,

  1203. you're not still there. But I leave a

1204. little bit OF THE PRESENCE OF GOD

  1205. wherever I've been. [applause]

1206. >> It's what God wants to do in you.

1207. >> That's what he wants to do in you.

1208. >> All the sponge did was make itself

  1209. available.

1210. >> All the sponge did was put itself in the

1211. right place. Come on here.

1212. >> And if you put yourself in the right

1213. place, God wants to fill you

  1214. >> to overflowing.

  1215. >> Let's pray.

  1216. [applause]

  1217. >> Father,

1218. in the name of Jesus, we thank you

1219. >> for this opportunity around your word.

1220. Father, we thank you because you're

  1221. giving us this invitation

1222. to be with you on these 40 days. And

1223. Lord, although our flesh is kicking up

  1224. and crying out already,

  1225. you are excited

1226. because you long to spend time with us,

1227. to pull us aside, to talk to us

  1228. uninterrupted.

1229. You want to fill the space that we have

1230. created. And Lord, we want you to fill

1231. that space. So Lord, we ask you to help

1232. us as we make room. Help us not to just

  1233. stop there.

1234. Help us, Lord, to fill that space with

  1235. scripture, with your word

1236. in a way, Lord, not not to just glance

1237. at it, but to gaze upon it.

1238. Not to just read it, but let it read us.

1239. Father, may we come away when we come

1240. away with reading your word, Lord,

1241. there'll be things that we'll see that

1242. we may not be proud of. Father, help us

1243. not to get discouraged or fall in

1244. condemnation or depression, but Father,

1245. help us to make our supplication

1246. [music] and be very honest with you

1247. about what we see. God, we can do that

1248. because you care and you want us to

1249. bring it to you. So Lord, let us come

1250. boldly to your throne of grace and we'll

1251. find mercy [music] and grace to help us

1252. in our time of need. And Father, help us

  1253. to pull aside

1254. start [music] with five minutes to just

1255. sit in your presence. Not to perform,

1256. but to just be with you

1257. so that you can speak to us.

1258. So that you can bring certain things to

1259. our mind. so we can find the peace and

1260. the clarity that we desire.

1261. Father, it's there in your presence.

1262. Help us to sit there [music] and just be

  1263. with you.

1264. Father, we honor you and we thank

1265. [music] you because you want to refresh

1266. us. That's our prayer is that Lord, as

1267. we head into these 40 days, when we come

1268. out of them, we will be better [music]

1269. than we was when we went in

1270. for everything that will be

  1271. accomplished, done, and revealed.

1272. Father, we'll be careful to give your

1273. name the honor and the glory.

1274. And we'll be quick to let others know

1275. that you did it. And we praise you for

  1276. it in Jesus name.
