  1. Come on, grab your Bible as we get ready

  2. to go into the word of the Lord. Whether

  3. it's a paper Bible, cell phone, tablet,

  4. whatever you have, let's hold it up and

  5. let's make our confession. Come on, say,

  6. "This is my Bible."

  7. >> This is my

  8. >> It is God's word.

  9. >> It reveals to me.

  10. >> It reveals to me

  11. >> God's will.

  12. >> Therefore,

  13. >> therefore,

  14. >> it's the final authority.

  15. >> It's the final authority

  16. >> to which I submit

  17. >> to settle all the issues

  18. >> of my life.

  19. >> It's the standard. is

  20. >> of my conduct.

  21. >> of my conduct

  22. >> and the basis

  23. >> of all my expectations.

  24. >> Come on, shout it out. I am

  25. >> I am

  26. >> what it says I am.

  27. >> It says I am.

  28. >> I possess

  29. >> what it says I possess.

  30. >> It says I

  31. >> And I can do

  32. >> what I can do.

  33. >> Absolutely everything.

  34. >> It says I can do.

  35. >> It says

  36. >> I'm a believer.

  37. >> Not a doubter.

  38. >> I'm a doer.

  39. >> Not just a hearer.

  40. >> And my life. In my life,

  41. >> my everyday life,

  42. >> my everyday life

  43. >> is the better

  44. >> is the better.

  45. >> After having heard

  46. >> after having heard

  47. >> the word of faith.

  48. >> Word of faith.

  49. >> Faith comes by hearing

  50. >> comes by hearing

  51. >> and hearing

  52. >> and hearing by

  53. >> the word of God.

  54. >> Let's ride.

  55. >> You may be seated in the presence of the

  56. Lord.

  57. Hallelujah.

  58. Go with me to Matthew chapter 6. Amen.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  59. >> Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  60. Matthew chapter 6, beginning at verse 5.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  61. It says Jesus talking

  62. to his disciples. And it says in verse

  63. 5, "And when you pray,

  64. >> you shall not if you pray,

  65. >> but when you pray,

  66. >> you shall not be like the hypocrites."

  67. >> For they love to pray standing in the

  68. synagogue and on the corners of the

  69. streets that they may be seen by men.

  70. >> Assuredly I say to you, they have their

  71. reward.

  72. But you, when you pray, go into your

  73. room, and when you have shut your door,

  74. pray to your father who is in the secret

  75. place. And your father who sees you in

  76. secret will reward you openly.

  77. >> And when you pray, do not use vain

  78. repetition as the heathen do, for they

  79. think that they will be heard for their

  80. many words. Therefore, do not be like

  81. them, for your father knows the things

  82. you have need of before you ask him.

  83. >> Verse N. In this manner, therefore pray

  84. our father who art in heaven.

  85. >> Today I want to talk to us from the the

  86. subject it's beyond words.

  87. >> It's beyond words. Father bless us we

  88. pray in Jesus name. Amen.

  89. >> It's beyond words.

  90. Corn I know you think we have forgotten

  91. but we are still in kingdom identity.

  92. [laughter]

  93. >> Yeah. This year we are chasing down

  94. kingdom identity. And we have defined

  95. kingdom identity as the distinguishing

  96. traits that define our worth, our

  97. purpose and our belonging. Amen.

  98. >> And these things are derived solely from

  99. our relationship with Jesus. It is

  100. inside of that relationship where we

  101. find everything that we need. We find

  102. our worth.

  103. >> Our worth is not found in other people.

  104. >> Our worth is not found in what other

  105. people say.

  106. >> Our worth is not found in our bank

  107. account.

  108. >> Our worth is not found in what we drive.

  109. Our belongings is not is not predicated

  110. upon whose last name we have

  111. >> or who name we can write beside ours.

  112. >> Our purpose is not the sum total of our

  113. purpose is not just in what we do in the

  114. secular world. But our worth, our

  115. purpose and our belonging is solely

  116. found in our relationship with Jesus.

  117. >> Amen. Jesus comes to establish his

  118. kingdom and we pick him up in Matthew

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  119. chapter 6 and he is establishing his

  120. kingdom by talking to his followers

  121. about what kingdom citizens ought to

  122. look like

  123. >> and how kingdom citizens ought to

  124. operate.

  125. >> And in Matthew chapter 6, Jesus is

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  126. talking to them and he talks to them

  127. about giving. He talks to them about

  128. fasting and he talks to them about

  129. prayer.

  130. >> He's teaching them how to pray. See,

  131. Jesus is talking to them and is trying

  132. to lay this thing out about what prayer

  133. is about.

  134. >> Can I just suggest to you from the onset

  135. that prayer is is not predicated on our

  136. righteousness.

  137. >> I do not pray, you do not pray based on

  138. your righteousness.

  139. >> The Bible says in Isaiah that our

  140. righteousness is as filthy rags.

  141. >> Yeah. If you pray based on if you pray

  142. based on your righteousness, then I

  143. already know that your prayer life is up

  144. and down.

  145. because you up and down.

  146. >> I'm up and down. And so our prayer life

  147. cannot be based on our righteousness.

  148. >> Our prayer life can't be based on our

  149. righteousness. Neither can our prayer

  150. life be based on results.

  151. >> Because we don't we don't always get

  152. what we pray for when we pray for it.

  153. Amen.

  154. >> And I don't mean to go off here, but can

  155. I just I want to find if there's anybody

  156. in the room who has walked with God long

  157. enough that you can thank him for the

  158. doors that he didn't open. Oh Lord. Oh.

  159. Oh. I want to thank him for the times

  160. that he didn't say yes. That I've lived

  161. long enough to see THAT ALL THINGS

  162. REALLY DO WORK TOGETHER for the good.

  163. I can't I I I don't want I don't I can't

  164. base my prayer off of results.

  165. >> Yeah. See, because the reality is God

  166. always answers prayer.

  167. >> He He all It may not answer it the way I

  168. want him to answer it,

  169. >> but he's a prayer answering God.

  170. >> SOMETIMES HE SAYS YES.

  171. >> Sometimes he says no.

  172. >> And sometimes he says wait.

  173. Amen.

  174. >> But I I cannot I cannot base my relation

  175. my my prayer on on results.

  176. >> Catch this. Jesus even tells his

  177. followers, you can't even base your

  178. prayer on your rhetoric.

  179. >> Oh, what does that mean? You cannot you

  180. cannot base your prayer on the words

  181. that you use.

  182. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Prayer is not

  183. based on how well you can put stuff

  184. together.

  185. >> Uh see see. And so WE WE'RE SO CONSCIOUS

  186. BECAUSE WE LIVE IN A day now where where

  187. where when you make a mistake put people

  188. make blooper reels out of you.

  189. >> So we are self-conscious about what we

  190. say and how we say it and when we

  191. stumble or when we stutter or when we

  192. stammer. AND SO SOMETIMES WE BRING THAT

  193. INTO OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH God

  194. >> and we think we have to perform for him.

  195. But God said, "Hold on a minute. Prayer

  196. is is is not based on your

  197. righteousness. It's not based on your

  198. results. It's not based on your

  199. rhetoric. But prayer must be based on

  200. relationship."

  201. >> Somebody shout relationship.

  202. >> Relationship.

  203. >> Yeah. SO SO WHAT IS WHAT IS PRAYER?

  204. Prayer at its simplest definition,

  205. prayer is communication with God.

  206. >> At its very root, that prayer is

  207. communication with God. that that prayer

  208. is talking to God.

  209. >> Yeah. Uh prayer this this is one of one

  210. of bishop's definitions. Prayer uh has

  211. two components to it. That that prayer

  212. had you had the activity of prayer but

  213. you also have the attitude of prayer.

  214. >> Yeah. The the activity of prayer is when

  215. we have set aside dedicated time where

  216. we go into talking to God. Amen.

  217. >> That is the activity of prayer. That is

  218. what my devotional time is. That is the

  219. time that I have carved out where I'm

  220. going to talk and spend with God. That

  221. is the activity of prayer. Somebody

  222. shout the activity.

  223. >> The activity.

  224. >> That is the activity of prayer. But we

  225. also have the attitude of prayer. See,

  226. the attitude of prayer is the ongoing

  227. conversation that that I can have with

  228. God at any time or any place. Oh yeah. I

  229. I don't I don't have to I don't have to

  230. just have a specific time. I can have an

  231. ongoing conversation with God. I can

  232. talk to God at work, in the car, in the

  233. shower, standing in line. [cheering]

  234. >> Before I go INTO A MEETING, WHILE I'M IN

  235. THE MEETING, WHEN I'M WALKING out of the

  236. meeting,

  237. >> I CAN TALK TO GOD. [cheering]

  238. >> It's the attitude of prayer.

  239. But the bishop said that the attitude

  240. the the activity, excuse me, the

  241. attitude of prayer does not exonerate us

  242. from the activity of prayer.

  243. >> Just because I can talk to God when I

  244. want, how I want, whenever I want,

  245. doesn't mean I shouldn't carve out time

  246. to spend specifically with God.

  247. >> Thank you, Dr. Shandelle for helping me

  248. bring this home. You know there lady

  249. Martha and I there are times we have

  250. communication throughout the day where I

  251. will call her or she'll call me. Don't

  252. want nothing. Don't need anything. It's

  253. just a check-in.

  254. >> But how many of you know that the

  255. check-in during the day does not

  256. substitute conversation when she get

  257. home?

  258. Amen. [applause]

  259. >> Yeah, I can we can have the attitude. We

  260. can have the attitude, the ongoing

  261. conversation, but there is still

  262. something to be said for the sit down,

  263. phone down, TV off conversation.

  264. >> I can talk to God while I'm driving, and

  265. it's powerful at times, but there is

  266. still a need for me to shut everything

  267. down and go into prayer with God.

  268. >> What does prayer provide? Why why is it

  269. necessary for us to have the activity of

  270. prayer? Because it is in the privileged

  271. place of prayer where I get to process

  272. the planned and even unplanned events of

  273. the day so that we can draw in the

  274. necessary strength so that we can

  275. appropriately respond and not just

  276. react.

  277. I need the activity of prayer before I

  278. get into my day so that I'm not going

  279. off on people.

  280. Oh,

  281. >> so I'm not looking crazy.

  282. >> Yeah. And you just LAY IT OUT. YOU LAY

  283. IT OUT IN ACTIVITY. FATHER, I just want

  284. to thank you for this day and blessing

  285. me and waking me up to see this day.

  286. Thank you for new mercy and new grace.

  287. Lord, I just I lay my day out before

  288. you. And uh Lord, you know, I have that

  289. that one meeting today. And

  290. and Lord, you know how they love to

  291. talk. I'm just asking you, Lord, to give

  292. me strength.

  293. Fix my face.

  294. >> Give me patience.

  295. >> Give me what to say.

  296. >> Yeah. Yeah. I'm I'm I'm laying. And

  297. Father, for the things that I'm not even

  298. aware of, I thank you for the grace to

  299. be able to handle it. So, I'm not just

  300. RESPONDING OUT OF MY FLESH.

  301. It is in the place of prayer where we

  302. get those things.

  303. >> But I like what how Martin Luther

  304. defined prayer.

  305. The great reformer emphasized prayer as

  306. an urgent

  307. constant necessity of a dependent soul.

  308. >> He famously stated, "To be a Christian

  309. without prayer is no more possible than

  310. to be alive without breathing."

  311. that you and I when we talk about what

  312. prayer is, although prayer

  313. includes words,

  314. prayer goes beyond words.

  315. >> When you and I talk about prayer, the

  316. foundation of prayer is relationship.

  317. >> What What is prayer? Here's a definition

  318. that I use for this this lesson on what

  319. what is prayer. Prayer is not a

  320. performance for an audience

  321. >> but an intimate relationship that can

  322. transform your life.

  323. >> Prayer is not a performance for an

  324. audience.

  325. >> Amen.

  326. >> Some of us are nervous about praying on

  327. site with other people because we feel

  328. like we have to perform.

  329. >> But the reality is you don't have to

  330. perform.

  331. What you are doing is using your faith

  332. and your influence with God to get him

  333. involved in the lives of somebody else.

  334. >> I can remember I was picking up my son

  335. one day from basketball uh from from

  336. basketball practice and uh he came up to

  337. the truck and he didn't get in. He asked

  338. me to roll the window down and I rolled

  339. the window down and he said, "Dad,

  340. uh can can you take one of my my friends

  341. home?"

  342. I said, "Sure. Tell him jump in. Now I

  343. didn't know his friend and the only way

  344. his friend was able to get in my truck

  345. is because of his teammates rel because

  346. of the sun.

  347. >> I wish SOMEBODY THE ONLY WAY HE WAS ABLE

  348. TO GET IN MY TRUCK WAS BECAUSE OF THE

  349. SUN. BECAUSE OF THE RELATIONSHIP

  350. >> THAT SOMEBODY ELSE HAD GOT ME INVOLVED

  351. IN HIS SITUATION. I'M COMING TO TELL

  352. YOU, YOU DON'T HAVE TO PRAY LIKE NOBODY

  353. ELSE. JUST GET GOD INVOLVED.

  354. >> It is about relationship.

  355. >> See, when we pray when we pray without a

  356. relationship, then then prayer becomes a

  357. checklist rather than a check-in.

  358. >> Thank you, Dr. Nra. Yeah, prayer becomes

  359. a checklist.

  360. And you have I prayed today. Do you pray

  361. over your food? Do you talk to God? It's

  362. Yeah. There prayer. There's nothing

  363. wrong with a checklist.

  364. But I cannot reduce my prayer down to a

  365. checklist.

  366. >> My prayer is about me checking in.

  367. >> ABOUT TALKING TO GOD ABOUT HOW I'M

  368. DOING, about where I am. Catch this. AND

  369. ALSO, LORD, WHAT IS ON YOUR HEART?

  370. >> SEE, it's about relationship.

  371. You don't want anybody who just comes to

  372. you and just talk to to you about them.

  373. >> You know you got them people in your

  374. life and they call you and you look at

  375. the phone like oh Lord Jesus

  376. oh father in the name of you don't even

  377. pray. You praying right father in the

  378. name OF JESUS. CUZ YOU ALREADY KNOW IT'S

  379. 25 MINUTES ABOUT THEM.

  380. >> THEY DON'T EVEN PICK UP THE PHONE ASK is

  381. this a good time?

  382. >> Are you busy?

  383. I know I got some people that hit the

  384. red button on them. DON'T DON'T DON'T

  385. SAY NOTHING. JUST LOOK STRAIGHT AT ME.

  386. Won't nobody know I'm talking about you.

  387. Why? Because we're not as motivated

  388. when somebody just comes to me and it's

  389. all about them.

  390. >> Prayer is about relation checking in.

  391. God, what what do you desire?

  392. >> God, what do you want?

  393. Yes, I'm going to let you know how I

  394. feel and where I am. But Lord, I want to

  395. know how are you?

  396. >> Oh, it's not a it's not a checklist. We

  397. don't want to reduce prayer. Prayer

  398. without relationship, it makes it a

  399. checklist.

  400. >> But when we have relationship with God

  401. and we base our prayer on our

  402. relationship with God, then prayer

  403. becomes a checkin.

  404. >> Amen.

  405. >> Yeah. I don't want to be mechanical in

  406. prayer.

  407. not emotionally and being spiritually

  408. vulnerable.

  409. Prayer is the place where I can go

  410. >> to God and be open about where I am

  411. >> and what I'm thinking.

  412. Oh yeah. About what I what I desire,

  413. >> what I want that I shouldn't want.

  414. >> What I WHAT I NEED THAT I DON'T WANT.

  415. GOD, I'M laying this thing out before

  416. you.

  417. It's about See, you will never establish

  418. relationship with anybody you can't be

  419. honest with.

  420. >> Yeah. I I I I want to lay that thing out

  421. before God.

  422. See, when we see relationship,

  423. when we understand relationship, we

  424. realize that prayer is not a checklist.

  425. We see it in our natural relationships.

  426. When we talk more about what we're doing

  427. more than how we are,

  428. and who we are. We've put checklists

  429. above checkin.

  430. >> I watch EVEN IN OUR RELATIONSHIP AT

  431. times we can get so busy and talking

  432. about what it is that have we we got the

  433. kids this week and you take Joshua to

  434. basketball, take Jesse to dance and

  435. I'mma fold the clothes and you wash the

  436. dishes and we going to clean the

  437. bathroom. That's a checklist.

  438. >> And if Oh, married people, I hope you

  439. hear me. If you're not careful,

  440. >> when you keep it a checklist, you can

  441. drift apart.

  442. >> Now, understand something. I'm not

  443. saying that checklists are bad

  444. because they're not.

  445. >> No. No. A checklist is not bad. A

  446. routine is not bad. Having a routine is

  447. good and it can be healthy. But you and

  448. I must periodically check if our routine

  449. still has a heartbeat.

  450. >> Yeah. I I want to make sure that my

  451. routine still has a my heart attached to

  452. it. I don't want to just be doing

  453. something and doing something and my

  454. heart is no longer in it.

  455. >> See, because routine can become a rhythm

  456. without a heartbeat.

  457. >> Yeah. You're on it and you're doing it

  458. and you're showing up and you're there,

  459. but your heart is no longer in it.

  460. >> You have proximity without presence.

  461. >> You and I cannot afford

  462. to cause to allow our prayer to be

  463. reduced down to a simply routine that

  464. doesn't have a heartbeat to it. Amen.

  465. >> Where is dry and wherever it is is dry,

  466. then we tend to drift

  467. and we begin to make prayer about our

  468. righteousness.

  469. >> We'll make prayer by our results.

  470. >> We'll even make prayer by our rhetoric.

  471. >> But Jesus pauses with his disciples and

  472. STOPS THEM. SAY, "HEY, WAIT A MINUTE. I

  473. WANT YOU to pray. I want you to go in,

  474. but let me tell you something. Prayer is

  475. not about the words that you use. Prayer

  476. is beyond words.

  477. >> All of us have been in a dry place. And

  478. this is where Jesus takes his disciples

  479. in our text in Matthew chapter 6. We see

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  480. when he looks at at when we look at how

  481. Jesus addresses the struggle that he

  482. sees these religious leaders having in

  483. prayer. He says to them in Matthew

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  484. chapter 6 vers 5 and 8, he warns his

  485. disciples against the empty repetition

  486. >> and public show of rel of the religious

  487. elite. Meaning he doesn't want you just

  488. coming to him with vain repetition.

  489. There's nothing wrong with having a

  490. certain prayer that you recite. In fact,

  491. I BELIEVE THERE'S GREAT VALUE IN WRITING

  492. DOWN your prayers. I believe there's

  493. great value in scripting your prayers

  494. based on the word of God. But what HE IS

  495. TALKING ABOUT is vain repetition

  496. >> where there's routine without a

  497. heartbeat.

  498. >> Where your heart is no longer in it.

  499. Can I tell you where Let me Can I just

  500. have a moment of transparency?

  501. I'm like, Bishop, y'all just love people

  502. to throw theelves under the bus. Here we

  503. go.

  504. I see I see it most often when I get

  505. ready to pray over my food.

  506. Oh, it's too many of us in here.

  507. >> George, your auntie, I know it's too

  508. many of us in here. Yes. Sometimes I get

  509. and I get my food and sometimes like

  510. Father God said, "Thank you for the food

  511. I'm about to receive for the nourishing

  512. my body."

  513. Oh yeah,

  514. >> I'm pouring hot sauce on it, praying at

  515. the same time. Father, just bless the

  516. food.

  517. Opening the ketchup pack in Jesus name.

  518. It's routine

  519. >> without pausing

  520. to say, "Lord,

  521. I realize

  522. now I'm not saying you have to do a

  523. Thanksgiving prayer over everything you

  524. eat." But what I'm saying is be careful

  525. >> to make sure that you're not just doing

  526. routine and there's no heart connected

  527. to it.

  528. that Lord I sometimes it's good to just

  529. pause to slow yourself down

  530. >> to remind yourself Lord I realize that

  531. that that there are people around the

  532. world right now who would love to have a

  533. portion of what it is that I have. Thank

  534. you for blessing me with something to

  535. eat. THANK YOU, FATHER, FOR THE MONEY

  536. YOU'VE GIVEN ME TO BE ABLE to get myself

  537. something to eat.

  538. >> THANK YOU, LORD. I CAN EAT WHAT I WANT.

  539. I'M NOT EATING SOMETHING THAT I DON'T

  540. EVEN WANT.

  541. AND IF I AM EATING SOMETHING THAT I

  542. DON'T EVEN WANT, THANK YOU FOR SOMETHING

  543. TO EAT.

  544. >> Jesus is is trying to warn them. He

  545. said, "Oh, don't don't vain repetition.

  546. Watch out for vain repetition." And the

  547. catch is the way Jesus fixes this. Don't

  548. notice this. Jesus doesn't give them a

  549. heavier checklist.

  550. He doesn't give them

  551. he doesn't give them h more to consider.

  552. In fact, he bases

  553. prayer

  554. on relationship.

  555. You know, I was I was reading reading

  556. this and and I could not get past the

  557. first two words

  558. >> of of how he he when he gave them the

  559. template for prayer, he said, let me

  560. just read it. Let me read it. He says to

  561. them,

  562. he says, "But you, when you pray, go

  563. into your in your room and when you have

  564. shut the door, pray to your father who

  565. is in No, no, I want verse five. Here we

  566. He says, "And when you pray, you shall

  567. not be like the hypocrites."

  568. >> Catch this. This is how I saw it. Jesus

  569. is sitting up here on the mountain with

  570. his disciples.

  571. He sees somebody else doing prayer in a

  572. way that he doesn't want his disciples

  573. to do it.

  574. >> He points it out and tells them, "Don't

  575. you try that."

  576. H I I I I give it to you like this. I

  577. can remember there's my mother sitting

  578. over there just as sweetly saved and

  579. sanctified

  580. with that pretty gray hair.

  581. I can remember being young and in the

  582. supermarket.

  583. >> Yeah, we would be we would be in the

  584. supermarket in the grocery store for my

  585. bougie people. My bad.

  586. And I can remember somebody some some

  587. little kid going off like on his

  588. parents.

  589. [laughter]

  590. And my mama taught us a lesson right

  591. there in the grocery store.

  592. [laughter]

  593. She said, "You see that?

  594. Don't you try."

  595. >> This is what Jesus is doing with his

  596. disciples.

  597. He's telling them, he said, "Do you see

  598. how they praying?

  599. >> Don't you try that.

  600. >> Don't you do that. Don't you pray like

  601. that. Don't you don't you assume that

  602. God will hear you for your many words.

  603. >> Don't don't YOU DON'T DON'T DON'T GET

  604. OUT IN PUBLIC and start." NOW, THERE'S

  605. NOTHING WRONG WITH PRAYING IN PUBLIC,

  606. but what Jesus is saying is you got to

  607. check the motive of your heart.

  608. >> DON'T GET OUT HERE TRYING TO ENTERTAIN

  609. OTHER PEOPLE. PRAY TO AN AUDIENCE of one

  610. >> and when you do

  611. >> he says this this is what he said when

  612. you do he said in verse n in this manner

  613. therefore you ought to pray

  614. >> and I couldn't get past the first two

  615. words

  616. our father

  617. >> because before Jesus makes any requests

  618. about daily bread about for forgiveness

  619. ness about kingdom coming and will being

  620. done. He wants us to understand that our

  621. prayer is predicated on relationship.

  622. >> That before you start rebuking the DEMON

  623. AND START BINDING THE DEVIL THAT OUR

  624. APPROACH TO GOD IS BASED on our

  625. relationship.

  626. >> He said our father.

  627. >> Our father. Woo. I will see I can't even

  628. get past the first word because the

  629. first word speaks of relationship.

  630. >> The first word says to us that that we

  631. are CONNECTED NOT JUST TO God but to

  632. each other.

  633. >> Yet we have a connection to each other

  634. >> that even though I PRAY IN SECRET, I

  635. PRAY IN PRIVATE, I'M STILL TALKING TO A

  636. FATHER THAT doesn't just belong to me.

  637. Yes.

  638. >> Oh, see see this. This is why I'm

  639. concerned because I cannot I'm concerned

  640. with people who say they have a prayer

  641. life, but they still walking in offense.

  642. >> I'm concerned FOR PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY

  643. HAVE A PRAYER LIFE, BUT THEY STILL NOT

  644. SPEAKING TO THEIR BROTHER OR THEIR

  645. SISTER.

  646. >> CAN I JUST PAUSE FOR A MOMENT AND SAY,

  647. YOU NEED TO CHECK WHAT IT IS YOU SAY YOU

  648. HAVE

  649. >> BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT TALKING TO YOUR

  650. FATHER. YOU TALKING TO OUR FATHER. I

  651. KNOW YOU MAY BE UPSET WITH ME, BUT

  652. BELOVED, LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING.

  653. WE'RE STILL connected

  654. >> because he's our father.

  655. >> I may have done you wrong.

  656. >> May have said something you didn't like,

  657. but he's still

  658. [laughter]

  659. >> You may still owe me $20.

  660. I'm going either have to get it or

  661. forget it.

  662. >> NO, BUT BUT BUT I CAN'T STAY IN A STATE

  663. OF OFFENSE BECAUSE WHEN I GO TO PRAY,

  664. HE'S OUR FATHER.

  665. Jesus said in Mark 11 verse 25

    Mark 11:25

  666. he said and whenever you stand praying

  667. >> talk Bible if you have anything

  668. >> anything

  669. >> my God against anyone

  670. >> Lord let me just put a quarter in the

  671. meter and park it right there for a

  672. moment. He said, "If you have anything

  673. against anyone,

  674. BEFORE YOU COME UP HERE WITH ALL THESE

  675. LONG WORDS

  676. TALKING to me, you need to remember that

  677. I am all y'all daddy."

  678. And that's STILL SEE I USED OH I

  679. REMEMBER MY MOM THAT WHEN ME AND AJ used

  680. to oh used to have our little scraps.

  681. One of the things I hate she back there

  682. laughing is THAT MY MAMA WOULD MAKE us

  683. come there and hug one another.

  684. >> Oh see that's old school right?

  685. WHY? BECAUSE THAT'S STILL YOUR sister

  686. >> and he's still your brother.

  687. >> It's still relationship.

  688. And not only is your relationship look

  689. the reason why she had us hugging, it

  690. wasn't just for us,

  691. >> but it breaks a parent's heart to see

  692. siblings

  693. >> not talking to you. Talk Holy Ghost.

  694. Talk Holy Ghost. IT BREAKS A PARENT'S

  695. heart

  696. >> raised up in the saint. Now everybody,

  697. you have issues. You have issues. I get

  698. it. Disagreements. I get it. But it

  699. breaks a parent's heart not to see their

  700. their own kids not talking.

  701. >> Oh, let me He said when you stand

  702. praying,

  703. >> if you have anything against anyone,

  704. forgive them.

  705. >> That your father in heaven may also

  706. forgive you of your trespasses.

  707. >> Jesus said it's all based on rel. He

  708. said our somebody shout our

  709. >> He said our father.

  710. Not only do we have connection with each

  711. other, but we have connection with God.

  712. >> And it is from that premise that we base

  713. our prayer

  714. >> that we have relationship with God. The

  715. Bible says in Romans chapter 8:15, for

  716. you did not receive the spirit of

  717. bondage again to fear, but you receive

  718. the spirit of adoption by whom we cry,

  719. "Aba, Father, I have been adopted into

  720. the family."

  721. See, adoption is different than giving

  722. birth. See what you when you give birth,

  723. you got what you got.

  724. >> Curly I want a baby with straight hair.

  725. If it's curly hair, you got what you

  726. got.

  727. >> But adoption,

  728. >> they get to look you over.

  729. >> Look you up and down. And you get

  730. picked.

  731. >> YOU GET SELECTED.

  732. >> CAN I TELL YOU? WHEN GOD CAME

  733. [screaming] FOR US, HE CHOSE US. HE SAW

  734. HE'S THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS US

  735. COMPLETELY AND CHOSE US ANYWAY. I'VE

  736. BEEN ADOPTED.

  737. >> It's based on relation. He chose He

  738. said, "You didn't choose me.

  739. >> I CHOSE YOU.

  740. >> AND I ordained you.

  741. >> He chose me."

  742. >> Tell your neighbor real quick. Say, "He

  743. chose me."

  744. >> He chose me.

  745. >> Drop it in the chat. He chose me. I

  746. didn't choose myself. He chose me.

  747. >> And it's based ON THAT RELATIONSHIP THAT

  748. I CAN COME TO HIM.

  749. >> IF I CHOSE HIM, THAT'D BE ONE THING.

  750. >> But he chose me.

  751. >> Prayer goes beyond words because we have

  752. relationship. Somebody shout, "We have

  753. relationship.

  754. >> We have relationship because of what

  755. Jesus has done."

  756. >> It's not because of what we've done. is

  757. because of what Jesus done. Hebrews chap

  758. I got to read the Bible. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  759. 10. Hebrews chapter 10 verse 19 through

    Hebrews 10:19–22

  760. 22. It says, "Therefore, brethren,

  761. having boldness to enter the holiest by

  762. the blood of Jesus, by a new and living

  763. way, which he consecrated for us through

  764. the veil, that is his flesh, and having

  765. a high priest over the house of God, let

  766. us draw near with a true heart in full

  767. assurance of faith, having our hearts

  768. sprinkled from an evil consciousness,

  769. and our bodies washed with pure water."

  770. You said, "Pastor, what in the world is

  771. that all about?" Our approach to God is

  772. not based on our righteousness.

  773. >> Our approach to God is based on the shed

  774. blood AND THE SACRIFICE OF JESUS. IN THE

  775. OLD TESTAMENT, YOU COULDN'T JUST WALK UP

  776. INTO the presence of God.

  777. >> There was the outer court, there was the

  778. inner court, and there was the Holies of

  779. Holies. And the Holies OF HOLIES WAS

  780. SEPARATED BY this thick curtain. AND

  781. ONLY THE HIGH PRIEST COULD GO IN and

  782. out. And even he couldn't just go in and

  783. out at will. They tied a rope around his

  784. leg because in the event that he went in

  785. AND AND SIN WAS NOT FORGIVEN, HE WOULD

  786. DROP DEAD IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD.

  787. >> BECAUSE IF THE SACRIFICE HADN'T BEEN

  788. ACCEPTED,

  789. >> HE WOULD DROP DEAD AND THEY WOULD HAVE

  790. TO DRAG HIM OUT.

  791. >> BUT WE DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT

  792. >> BECAUSE JESUS OFFERED ONE SACRIFICE FOR

  793. ALL [screaming] AND FOREVER.

  794. THE SIN IS HAS BEEN SETTLED. AND THE

  795. BIBLE SAYS WHEN IT TALKS ABOUT THE

  796. CRUCIFIXION THAT THE VEIL was rent.

  797. >> I wish I had some Bible readers in here

  798. that THE VEIL WAS RENT FROM THE TOP TO

  799. THE BOTTOM.

  800. >> IF IT WAS RENT FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE

  801. TOP, AL, MAN COULD HAVE DONE IT.

  802. >> BUT MAN COULDN'T RENT THIS VEIL.

  803. [screaming] GOD RENT THIS VEIL.

  804. >> AND WE CAN COME BOLDLY TO THE THRONE OF

  805. GRACE.

  806. I'M COMING BASED ON RELATIONSHIP.

  807. SOMEBODY SHOUT RELATIONSHIP.

  808. >> RELATIONSHIP. YES, SIR.

  809. >> Not coming on my own righteousness.

  810. >> My prayer is based on what he has done.

  811. >> My God, I feel it.

  812. >> Ephesians 3 11 and 12 says, "According

  813. to the eternal promise WHICH HE

  814. ACCOMPLISHED IN CHRIST Jesus our Lord,

  815. in whom we have boldness." Somebody

  816. shout, "Boldness."

  817. >> Boldness.

  818. AND ACCESS. SOMEBODY SHOUT ACCESS.

  819. >> ACCESS

  820. >> WITH CONFIDENCE through faith in him.

  821. >> WHEN I TELL SEE, THIS IS WHERE THIS IS

  822. WHY THIS IS WHY WHEN YOU GO TO GOD AND

  823. PRAY, DON'T COME UP ALL TIMID.

  824. >> That's right.

  825. >> Like you don't belong.

  826. >> Sometimes I get I got two kids. I can't

  827. put them out there cuz I'm going have to

  828. give up some money.

  829. But I got one child and I get on them

  830. because sometimes when they come ask me

  831. something, they come ask me right

  832. sheepish.

  833. That's a country word. Yeah. Right.

  834. Right. Real under eye like they don't

  835. even like I'm not your daddy.

  836. >> Oh, it just gets on my nerves, Dr.

  837. NITRA. BECAUSE MY MIND IS SAYING, YOU

  838. DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU. YOU

  839. DON'T [screaming] KNOW HOW MUCH I'LL

  840. GIVE FOR YOU.

  841. >> I NEED YOU TO BUST UP ON ME. ASK ME FOR

  842. WHATEVER YOU WANT. EVEN IF YOU THINK I'M

  843. GOING TO SAY NO, JUST ASK ME ANYWAY.

  844. cuz you know I love you that much

  845. >> AND THAT IF IT'S GOOD FOR YOU THAT I'LL

  846. GIVE IT TO YOU AND IF IT'S NOT I WON'T.

  847. [applause]

  848. >> Some of YOU TRYING TO SIZE UP YOUR

  849. BLESSING AND YOUR PRAYER REQUEST OR

  850. TRYING TO DUMB IT DOWN SO WHAT YOU THINK

  851. GOD CAN DO. CAN I TELL YOU? ASK GOD FOR

  852. THE HARD THING. ASK GOD FOR THE BIG

  853. THING.

  854. Ask him for the hard thing.

  855. Ain't nothing too hard for God.

  856. Is there anything

  857. Bible too hard for God?

  858. What your neighbor said, just ask him.

  859. Ask him. Ask him. STOP SIZING IT UP.

  860. STOP wondering if he can do it. Stop

  861. wondering IF HE'LL DO IT FOR YOU. Just

  862. ask him.

  863. >> [music]

  864. >> said, "We got boldness. We have access.

  865. We have confidence

  866. >> through him."

  867. >> My God.

  868. >> Lord have mercy. I got to get through

  869. here.

  870. [cheering]

  871. >> THAT'S WHY WE HAVE PRAYER CAMPAIGN

  872. [music] TO REMIND YOU YOU NEED TO ASK

  873. GOD. LET YOUR REQUESTS BE MADE KNOWN

  874. UNTO GOD.

  875. That's why sometimes I used to love

  876. Christmas

  877. >> with my kids.

  878. >> Oh, IF YOU GOT THE KIND OF KIDS LIKE I

  879. GOT THERE, COME UP WITH THAT LIST.

  880. >> And boy, they act like you a

  881. billionaire.

  882. >> But you know what? I love it.

  883. >> Just ask me.

  884. >> Don't you TRY TO FIGURE OUT HOW I'M

  885. GOING TO DO IT. JUST ASK ME.

  886. WHY? Because it's based on relationship.

  887. >> It's not based on my righteousness.

  888. >> It's not based on results. It's not

  889. based on rhetoric. It's based on

  890. relationship. Somebody shout

  891. relationship.

  892. >> Relationship.

  893. >> See, when you and I base our prayer on

  894. relationship, it shifts our prayer.

  895. >> Our prayer will shift from performance

  896. to presence.

  897. >> It it WON'T BE ABOUT HOW I SAY IT.

  898. IT. I heard bishop prayer is not prayer

  899. my the power of my prayer

  900. >> is not in my words

  901. >> but the power of prayer is to whom I'm

  902. praying to

  903. >> that's where the power lies

  904. >> oh god see this is why this is why I

  905. preach let me tell you something oh god

  906. help me Holy Ghost let me just calm and

  907. just slow down

  908. see this is why this is why I thank God

  909. for our senior seniors.

  910. >> I thank God. I thank God. I thank God

  911. for our seniors. See, because see see

  912. and and you are educated and smart and

  913. all that kind of stuff. But but but I

  914. love you because even if you didn't go

  915. as far educationally as you wanted to

  916. go,

  917. >> you still have a you have a connection

  918. with God.

  919. >> And I'm glad you don't shut your mouth

  920. just because sometimes you split verbs.

  921. Sometimes you don't say it the way that

  922. CHAD GBT WOULD SAY. I DON'T NEED YOU TO

  923. SAY IT LIKE CHAD GPT SAID. I NEED YOU.

  924. CAN YOU GET A PRAYER THROUGH? Do you

  925. have relationship?

  926. >> IT'S NOT ABOUT PERFORMANCE.

  927. >> It's not ABOUT MY PERFORMANCE. SEE, when

  928. I base it on relationship, I move over.

  929. See, my prayer is that after this lesson

  930. that the the the pressure to perform

  931. will break off of you.

  932. >> That you will go to God based on

  933. relationship.

  934. >> And that your prayer will shift from

  935. performance

  936. to his presence.

  937. >> It will shift from from catch this from

  938. performance to your presence.

  939. >> Just being there.

  940. >> Just being there with God. Just God,

  941. some I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT to say, but

  942. I'm coming to pray anyway.

  943. >> I don't have all the words. I don't have

  944. the ARTICULATION OF SPEECH, BUT GOD, I'M

  945. HEALED.

  946. >> Search my heart.

  947. >> Lord, you know what it is I want to say,

  948. BUT I DON'T have the words. See, I wish

  949. I had somebody who lived long enough to

  950. know that LIFE CAN HAND YOU SOMETHING

  951. THAT YOU DON'T HAVE THE WORDS FOR.

  952. The Bible said the Holy Spirit knows.

  953. >> When we have groanings that cannot be

  954. uttered,

  955. >> it shifts from performance to presence.

  956. >> Oh yeah. When we when we when we lay

  957. prayer on relationship, catch this.

  958. Relationship shifts prayer from catch

  959. this scripted shorthand to real honesty.

  960. >> Yeah. You you you it it'll move it from

  961. scripted short hands. See, in casual or

  962. distance relationship, we default to

  963. safe scripted responses.

  964. >> Yeah. Somebody ask you, "How you doing?"

  965. Yeah, I'm good.

  966. Oh, we get real churchy sometimes with

  967. with stuff like this. Somebody say, "God

  968. God can work it out, can't he?" Won't he

  969. do it?

  970. And see, there's nothing wrong with

  971. those phrases, but you and I must check

  972. our heart that we don't have a routine

  973. without a heartbeat. Because sometimes

  974. you can say the right thing and still

  975. don't believe it.

  976. >> But relationship shifts my prayer from

  977. scripted shortorthhand to real honesty.

  978. >> See, real honesty will allow you will

  979. allow you to be able to talk honestly

  980. with God.

  981. This is why I love the scripture. I'm so

  982. glad that God included certain things in

  983. the scripture. You got to be able to

  984. talk to God honestly. See, God can

  985. handle unfiltered grief.

  986. >> God can handle your frustration.

  987. >> He can handle your confusion. Uh for

  988. unfiltered grief, Psalms 22:1 and two, I

    Psalms 22:1

  989. just want to read it real quick. It says

  990. my Psalms 22 verse one. It says, "My

  991. God, my God, why have you forsaken ME?

  992. WHY ARE YOU SO FAR FROM SAVING ME? So

  993. far from my cries OF MY ANGER. SEE,

  994. THAT'S real prayer.

  995. >> It's real. IT'S REAL HONEST. AND GOD CAN

  996. HANDLE THAT.

  997. >> You got a child and you were PRAYING FOR

  998. A CHILD and believing God for a child

  999. and YOU GET THAT CHILD and it seem like

1000. that child is taking you through more

  1001. hell

1002. >> and you go back to GOD AND SAY, "GOD,

  1003. WHY?

  1004. Have you forsaken me?

1005. >> God can handle that.

1006. >> Away with the thought that you can't ask

1007. God. No. You if anybody you can ask, ask

  1008. God.

  1009. >> Oh,

1010. and be careful. Thank you, Holy Ghost.

1011. That we don't replace God with chat GPT

  1012. [clears throat] or AI.

  1013. >> I feel God right now.

1014. Yeah. Be be careful because what we'll

1015. find is do we'll do like Asa where we we

1016. we we WILL END UP CONSULTING other

1017. things and other people and the things

1018. that we used to bring TO GOD AND SAY

1019. LORD HELP ME HOW TO SAY THIS LORD SHAPE

1020. MY WORDS LORD HELP ME LORD NOT TO WE'LL

  1021. GO TO CHAT GPT.

1022. >> Now am I saying anything wrong with

1023. chat? Ain't nothing wrong with it, but

1024. you and I must keep a watch on it

1025. >> because we'll start taking things to it

1026. >> that we have stopped taking to God.

1027. >> Lord, my lesson gone. Here we go.

1028. >> I I got I got to get to this. So So what

1029. what do I do when I realize my prayer

  1030. has drifted into routine?

1031. without a heartbeat. What What do I do?

1032. What What do I do? Number one, drop the

  1033. performance and come honest.

1034. >> Drop drop the performance and come

1035. honest. So that means that sometime that

1036. early on your prayer may seem empty

1037. cuz you're not trying to perform

  1038. anymore.

1039. You're just saying, "Lord, here I am.

  1040. Help me."

1041. You pour it out. I'm not saying that.

1042. I'm not saying you're saying that to

1043. keep from saying what's real. Be honest.

1044. Pour it out. But there are times where

1045. you don't even have you don't even know

  1046. what to say.

1047. >> If you want to get back to a thriving

  1048. prayer life,

  1049. drop the performance.

1050. >> Come honest. The Bible says in Psalm

    Psalms 62:8

1051. 62:8, "Trust in him at all times, you

1052. people. Pour out your heart before him.

  1053. God is our refuge.

1054. >> He's the safe place that you and I can

  1055. run into.

1056. >> If there's anybody that can handle our

  1057. honesty, it is God.

  1058. >> Yeah.

1059. If you dry and your your relationship,

1060. your devotional time with God is dry,

1061. just come to him. Say, "Lord, you know,

  1062. I ain't been here in a while.

1063. Now, I know I should be talking to you

1064. on the regular, but Lord, it's it's

1065. August and I'm here and I know I need to

1066. I don't need to just have the attitude

1067. of prayer. I need the activity of

  1068. prayer. So, Lord, [snorts]

1069. right now, all these thoughts going

1070. through my mind trying to condemn me

1071. about telling me how long it's been

1072. since I've been here. Lord, you know how

  1073. long it's been.

1074. Father, forgive me. I'm here today.

1075. Thank you for being a God of grace

1076. and still wanting to talk to me.

1077. >> Yeah. Drop the performance and come

1078. honest. Secondly, trade the checklist

  1079. for a checkin.

1080. Zephaniah 3:1 17 says, "The Lord your

    Zephaniah 3:1

1081. God in your midst, the mighty one will

1082. save. He will rejoice over you with

1083. gladness. He will quiet you with his

1084. love. He will rejoice over you with

1085. singing. Can I tell you that God longs

1086. to spend time with you? He's not

1087. standing with a bat trying to beat you

1088. up about how long it's been since you've

  1089. been there.

1090. >> No, he wants to rejoice over you. He

1091. wants to be there with you.

1092. Trade the checklist for a checkin.

1093. >> How do I get my prayer life back? Number

1094. one, somebody say, "Drop the performance

1095. >> and come honest." Number two, say,

  1096. "Trade the checklist."

  1097. >> Trade the checklist

  1098. >> for a check in.

  1099. >> For a check in.

  1100. >> And number three,

  1101. >> I love you.

1102. Lean on the spirit when words fail you.

1103. >> Lean on the spirit of God when words

  1104. fail you.

1105. >> Prayer is beyond words.

  1106. It includes words,

  1107. >> but it's beyond words.

1108. >> The Bible says in Psalm 46:10, "Be still

    Psalms 46:10

  1109. and know

  1110. that I am God."

1111. >> Psalm 61:2 says, "From the ends of the

    Psalms 61:2

  1112. earth.

1113. I will cry to you. When my heart is

  1114. overwhelmed,

1115. lead me to the rock that is higher than

  1116. I am."

1117. Not because I always know what to say,

1118. >> but because just being in your presence

1119. >> will make me better.

1120. >> Let me tell you something. This month,

  1121. our desire

1122. is that we will will move into a place

1123. of boldness and our time with God. That

1124. when we approach God, we don't we don't

1125. approach him based on on our

1126. righteousness. It's as filthy rags.

1127. We're not approaching him based on

1128. results. The Bible said, "Our father

1129. know what we have need of before we even

1130. ask." We can ask him, but it's not based

  1131. on that.

1132. >> It's not based on rhetoric. The many

1133. words that we say. It is based on

  1134. relationship.

1135. >> He made it so that we can boldly come to

  1136. him

1137. and be with him. Let's pray.

1138. Father, in the name of Jesus, we thank

1139. you for this opportunity around your

1140. word. We thank you Lord for what you are

1141. doing even in the hearts of us Lord as

1142. we embark on this prayer campaign.

1143. Father we thank you because we know that

1144. you are prayer answering God. We thank

1145. you that we can come to you [music] and

1146. let our requests be made known to you.

1147. We know God that you are able to provide

1148. for us. We we we know there are

1149. different parts of prayer. But father,

1150. we just wanted to make sure as we start

1151. this [music] month that we are basing

1152. our prayer, our time, whether it's

1153. attitude or activity, on our

1154. relationship with you. Thank you for

1155. making a way so that we can be with you

1156. and spend time with you. Thank you that

1157. you're not mad or upset or or trying to

1158. get back at us, Lord. No, you are not

  1159. like man.

1160. We thank you that you will rejoice over

1161. us. That you [music] want to be with us,

1162. that you want to spend time with us. I

1163. pray, Father, that as we move into this

1164. week [music] spending time with you,

1165. that we'll come open, that we'll come

1166. honest, that we won't lean in just on

1167. our words, but Father, we'll lean in

  1168. with our hearts.

1169. For we realize, Lord, our prayer is

  1170. beyond words.

1171. It's built on our relationship with you.

1172. and we thank you for it now in Jesus

  1173. name.
