  1. all right if you have a Bible or an app

  2. let's open it up we are going to be in 2

  3. Corinthians this morning 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 9 chapter mention

  4. chapter 9 we're going to be looking at

  5. verses 6 through 15 now now let me just

  6. preface the sermon this morning with

  7. this we are going going to be talking

  8. about generosity this morning generosity

  9. uh involves the giving of your finances

  10. and when it comes to church I I I think

  11. not not this church but but just church

  12. in general I think often times when we

  13. approach the issue of generosity

  14. specifically as it pertains to our

  15. finances we can immediately uh put up

  16. walls of defense and and that's for a

  17. couple of reasons maybe because you have

  18. not experienced Church Life well and

  19. maybe you've been part of a church or

  20. you've been uh witnessed to a pastor who

  21. has really abused their role has really

  22. abused use God's word when it comes to

  23. the issue of finances and and generosity

  24. or or maybe just maybe you are clinging

  25. too much to the things of this world and

  26. and when conviction is brought to your

  27. life or when you are challenged with the

  28. truth of God's word as it pertains to

  29. how we are called to be generous in all

  30. areas of our life that that really rubs

  31. us the wrong way we we are a people

  32. created to be devoted make no mistake

  33. the question is not are we devoted but

  34. rather what are we devoted

  35. to matter of fact if you continue

  36. thematically all throughout the

  37. scriptures Genesis the Revelation

  38. everything in between this is what we

  39. discover about God's people God's people

  40. and generosity are not exclusive from

  41. one another if you are a believer in the

  42. house if you are a son and child of God

  43. youve given your yes and amen to Jesus

  44. you have placed your hope faith and

  45. trust in him biblically it is assumed

  46. that you are a generous individual we'll

  47. get to that here in just a moment but

  48. Paul he's he's writing to the Corinthian

  49. Church and in his letter 2

  50. Corinthians he's challenging them to

  51. remain committed to a previous

  52. commitment that they had given to Paul

  53. verbally as a matter of fact the church

  54. in Jerusalem was experiencing some

  55. hardships that was due to a number of

  56. factors they were experiencing

  57. persecution and oppression much like the

  58. early church did in the time of Paul but

  59. not only that it was during this time

  60. that Jerusalem had experienced a famine

  61. there were people who were starving and

  62. one of the beacons of Hope for people

  63. who were in need need was the church in

  64. Jerusalem they had spent all their money

  65. and providing for their community and

  66. they were in desperate need of Financial

  67. Resources so Paul being the missionary

  68. that he was being the pastor that he was

  69. went to all the churches that he had

  70. planted he had written letters to all

  71. these churches asking them to commit a

  72. particular amount financially that would

  73. be used by the church in Jerusalem to

  74. serve their community so Paul here in

  75. second Corinthians he

  76. reminds the Corinthian Church of their

  77. commitment but I want us to take note

  78. he's not just reminding them of the

  79. financial commitment he's he's really

  80. calling them into a greater

  81. understanding of what Biblical

  82. generosity is and that's what I want to

  83. challenge us to do this morning I I I

  84. want us to not just sit and listen to

  85. Paul's words who were calling out to a

  86. people to remain committed uh to a

  87. pledge they had made to fellow brothers

  88. and sisters in the faith but but

  89. ultimately I want us to sit and be

  90. challenged by what it means to live with

  91. a spirit of

  92. generosity one of the questions I want

  93. to challenge us with this morning is

  94. this ask yourself am I generous

  95. enough and while Paul in the context of

  96. our passage indeed is referring to

  97. financial generosity I I I want us to

  98. understand that biblical generosity is

  99. not just about dollar signs now mind you

  100. dollar signs are a big deal it's how we

  101. pay for the lights it's it's how we fund

  102. the Ministries and the programs here at

  103. the Grove and and I just want to take a

  104. take some time this morning to say thank

  105. you grow family for for your

  106. faithfulness to the kingdom of God thank

  107. you for contributing sacrificially to

  108. the mission of this church which is to

  109. reach the Grove and make

  110. disciples you know we have Beed witness

  111. to the fact that whenever there has been

  112. a need God has delivered God has

  113. supplied God has shown up and that is

  114. due to the faithfulness of this this

  115. church but generosity is not just about

  116. dollar signs generosity is about the

  117. talent that you have about the time that

  118. you've been given here on Earth and how

  119. you will use your time your talents and

  120. your Treasures to contribute to the

  121. mission of the kingdom of God through a

  122. local body of

  123. Believers so Paul in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 9 chapter mention

  124. chapter 9 as he begin begins to

  125. encourage a heart of generosity as he

  126. begins to remind the

  127. Corinthians of their commitment they

  128. meant made to the church in Jerusalem

  129. here's what he writes beginning in verse

  130. six the point is this in other words

  131. everything that Paul has declared from

  132. chapter 1 to verse six of chapter n this

  133. is what he's getting to it's about this

  134. Spirit of generosity everything that we

  135. accomplish in the kingdom and for the

  136. kingdom must first be rooted in a heart

  137. that has been overflowing with the

  138. generosity of the

  139. Gospel so that it can then and be

  140. enacted in every other area of our life

  141. so he says the point is this whoever SWS

  142. sparingly will also reap

  143. sparingly and whoever SWS

  144. bountifully will also Al reap

  145. bountifully each one must give as he has

  146. decided in his heart not reluctantly or

  147. under compulsion for God loves a

  148. cheerful Giver we're going to get a

  149. little bit more in depth into this in in

  150. just a moment but but let me just say

  151. this God will do more with a little that

  152. is given from a cheerful and Generous

  153. Heart then he will with plenty that is

  154. given from a heart uh out of guilt shame

  155. or obligation this is what Paul is

  156. getting at because the power does not

  157. rest in the

  158. amount the power rests in God the power

  159. doesn't rest in your resources the power

  160. rest in the faith that we have in God

  161. and how he will utilize multiply and

  162. expend those

  163. resources Paul continues verse eight and

  164. God is able to make all grace abound to

  165. you so that having all sufficiency in

  166. all things at all times you may abound

  167. in every good work are you tracking

  168. where Paul is taking us your generosity

  169. how how you seow how you give is is an

  170. expansion of the good work God is doing

  171. in you verse n he goes on to quote the

  172. book of Psalms as it is

  173. written he has distributed freely he has

  174. given to the poor his righteousness

  175. endures

  176. forever he who supplies seed to the swer

  177. and bread for food don't miss this will

  178. supply and multiply your seed for sewing

  179. and and increase the Harvest of your

  180. righteousness you will be enriched in

  181. every way to be generous in every way

  182. which through us will produce

  183. Thanksgiving to God for the ministry of

  184. this service is not only supplying the

  185. needs of the

  186. Saints I love this but it also

  187. overflowing in many thanksgivings to God

  188. by their approval he's talking about the

  189. church in Jerusalem of this service they

  190. our brothers and sisters in Jerusalem

  191. will glorify God because of your

  192. submission that comes from your

  193. confession of the gospel of Christ and

  194. the generosity of your contribution for

  195. them and for all others do you see how a

  196. SP of generosity goes far beyond

  197. financial

  198. resources and what not only is it

  199. supplying the physical needs of the

  200. church in Jerusalem but it's drawing

  201. them in to deeper and greater purpose

  202. verse 14 while they long for you and

  203. pray for you because of the surpassing

  204. grace of God upon you and I love how

  205. Paul concludes this

  206. chapter thanks be to God for his

  207. inexpressible ible gift and all God's

  208. people said amen Lord would you bless

  209. your word Holy Spirit would you stir our

  210. hearts this

  211. morning so as we think on this question

  212. am I generous enough I want us to think

  213. on it as it relates to biblical

  214. generosity what Biblical generosity

  215. really is what Biblical generosity

  216. really

  217. implies I looked up the word generosity

  218. in the dictionary this week here's

  219. here's how it's defined it's the

  220. virtue of being

  221. excessive in your

  222. giving so as we consider the question am

  223. I generous enough we we need to

  224. challenge ourselves into thinking am I

  225. excessive in how I give and how I give

  226. of my finances of of how I give in my

  227. talents and of how I give of my time am

  228. I overflow

  229. flowing with generosity in all of those

  230. areas so that the kingdom of God as it's

  231. pushing forward and inviting people in I

  232. am contributing not just with part of my

  233. life not just with some of my life but

  234. with all of my

  235. life though while indeed finances are

  236. important it's one thing to write a

  237. check and praise God for checks praise

  238. God for large checks praise God for

  239. Small Checks praise God for sacrificial

  240. giving but but what I really want us to

  241. press into and this is what Paul is

  242. getting at is where is your heart behind

  243. that

  244. generosity because you can give all you

  245. want you can give everything that you

  246. have but if your heart is not in it do

  247. you know what Paul declares later in the

  248. New Testament he says you're nothing

  249. more than a clanging symbol if it's not

  250. rooted out of a love that is only

  251. experienced in Jesus Christ then it's

  252. all for not it's all done in vain it's a

  253. clanging symbol that makes nothing but

  254. noise there's no Melody there's no

  255. rhythm to the generosity of your

  256. life it's been said that the job of a

  257. pastor is to point you from God's word

  258. to the excellencies of Christ so that

  259. you see what God has given you in Christ

  260. and upon beholding the gift of his grace

  261. you would then want and

  262. desire to

  263. give you see generosity it's it's not

  264. just an

  265. act it's a reflection of your

  266. heart what we give how we give why we

  267. give it it reveals the depth of trust

  268. that we have in God it's a reflection of

  269. our understanding of of the grace that

  270. we've received of of the riches of

  271. Heaven that has been poured down into us

  272. and and if I've experienced the richness

  273. of the Father by way of the son that has

  274. been awakened in me through the ministry

  275. of the Holy Spirit the natural result of

  276. a relationship with Jesus should then be

  277. a pouring out of my life to

  278. others so let's do this let's let's go

  279. back to our passage in 2 Corinthians 9

  280. and and let's look at the pathway that

  281. is laid out for us let's let's look at

  282. these key

  283. principles that we can adopt that would

  284. give us a greater understanding of what

  285. it means to live life with generosity if

  286. you're taking notes here's the first one

  287. generosity will reflect your faith in

  288. God's

  289. provision generosity reflects your faith

  290. fath in God's provision here's a

  291. challenging thought we don't own it

  292. all matter of fact the Old Testament

  293. will say it this way there is nothing

  294. new Under the

  295. Sun every blessing that we receive every

  296. resource that we have at our disposal

  297. every talent that we've been gifted with

  298. and the Very time that we have on this

  299. Earth has all been granted and given to

  300. us by God

  301. and when it overflows in a spirit of

  302. generosity when when that relationship

  303. pours out in a spirit of generosity what

  304. it does is it reflects the faith that we

  305. have in the provisions of God go back

  306. with me to verse

  307. six whoever SWS

  308. sparingly will also reap

  309. sparingly whoever SWS bountifully will

  310. will also reap

  311. bountifully I love what Paul's doing

  312. here he's he's using agricultural

  313. language it it it was the trade of the

  314. majority of people in Corinth he farming

  315. metaphors he's he's using these

  316. particular words and phrases to

  317. highlight a spiritual truth that the

  318. measure of your

  319. generosity not the amount but the faith

  320. and the heart that is behind it the

  321. measure of your generosity determines

  322. the blessings that you will

  323. receive and another words let me put it

  324. this way we give for the purposes of

  325. God and God will give back because of

  326. our trust that as Paul will later say in

  327. Philippians our trust that God will meet

  328. all our needs according to his riches

  329. and glory in Christ Jesus

  330. but here's the unfortunate thing that

  331. we've been exposed to in the 21st

  332. century Church World there have been

  333. churches there have been uh uh pushes

  334. through certain denominations and there

  335. have been particular agendas by

  336. particular pastors that have used 2

    2 Corinthians 9:6

  337. Corinthians 9:6 and in order to push

  338. this idea that that you can become

  339. wealthy and Rich and it's all determined

  340. by the amount of money money that you

  341. give often times that that thought is

  342. perpetuated in the church which is why

  343. we

  344. have bad

  345. experiences we put up walls of Defense

  346. when it comes to issues of money this

  347. this belief known as the Prosperity

  348. Gospel reduces God reduces the Savior to

  349. nothing more than an Aaron boy who is

  350. about providing what we want

  351. as opposed to what he has purposed but

  352. this is not at all what Paul means let's

  353. make that absolutely clear Paul is

  354. talking about generosity as an act of

  355. trust and faith not a means to worldly

  356. possessions and wealth generosity is

  357. Faith and the provisions that God gives

  358. now there's some deep theological riches

  359. that is taking place here for example

  360. I'm I'm reminded of a moment in the

  361. ministry of Jesus as told to us in the

  362. gospel of Mark Jesus was a people

  363. Watcher anybody ever just just like

  364. watching

  365. people Mark tells us that Jesus is at

  366. the temple with his disciples and he

  367. says that Jesus is sitting across the

  368. offering box and he's watching people as

  369. they go and give their offering now now

  370. don't miss this Jesus is a watcher not

  371. because he's just watching the people's

  372. actions but more than that he's watching

  373. their motives and he's watching their

  374. hearts and Mark will tell us that some

  375. very wealthy and Rich individuals went

  376. and contributed very large Financial

  377. sums to the offering box to the temple

  378. Treasury and then I love what Mark does

  379. Mark Mark contrast this he he juxtaposes

  380. this this scene with with this poor

  381. Widow who walks up to the offering box

  382. and the scripture says she she reaches

  383. into her pocket she she pulls out two

  384. mites which in our context is is pennies

  385. less than

  386. pennies and she P places them in the

  387. trle in the temple

  388. Treasury and Jesus sees this as a moment

  389. to demonstrate what generosity is how

  390. generosity is Faith In God's provision

  391. he gathers his disciples and he says do

  392. you see what we've just

  393. witnessed we've witnessed wealthy people

  394. given large sums and we've just

  395. witnessed this poor

  396. Widow give a tiny bit and he says this I

  397. tell you this she has given much

  398. more it's think how how is she given

  399. much

  400. more did you see the amount of money

  401. that they put in did you see the of cash

  402. did you see the number of zeros on that

  403. check how have they given much more and

  404. then this is where Jesus brings

  405. clarification to what generosity really

  406. is here I'll put it in my

  407. notes here's what he says truly I say to

  408. you this poor Widow has put in more than

  409. all those who are contributing to the

  410. offering box for they all contributed

  411. out of their abundance but she out of

  412. her poverty

  413. she has put in everything she had all

  414. that she had to live on this is

  415. incredible don't miss this Jesus is not

  416. knocking the large Financial sums he's

  417. not knocking the wealthy people but

  418. rather what he's doing is he's pointing

  419. our gaze and he's calling us to shift

  420. our perspective to what generosity

  421. really

  422. embodies it is trust in God

  423. God you have given me all these

  424. blessings if not for you I would not be

  425. able to experience them and I trust that

  426. all of this is held together because of

  427. you and as a result of that trust out of

  428. a spirit of gratitude and generosity I

  429. give to

  430. you do you trust in God's

  431. provision you see when we give

  432. generously what what we declare is our

  433. trust

  434. in his ability to meet our

  435. needs we live in a culture that that

  436. tells us to hold on to to hang on to the

  437. things that we have biblical culture

  438. flips that upside down and says give it

  439. away as an act of

  440. trust give it away

  441. as a resounding voice that says God you

  442. own it all and I trust in you to provide

  443. here's what I want to challenge you with

  444. cons consider how you approach

  445. giving consider where your heart is when

  446. it comes to having one that overflows in

  447. generosity is it a heart that fears

  448. scarcity is it a heart that that fears

  449. giving it away or is it a heart that SWS

  450. generously because of the Trust In God's

  451. abundance let's do this the remainder of

  452. this morning let's examine our heart

  453. hearts and let's call upon the spirit

  454. let's call upon the name of the Lord so

  455. that true generosity would not be about

  456. the amount but that we would understand

  457. it's about the faith that we have in the

  458. provision that God gives in our lives

  459. but giving generously this is what we

  460. find it not only reflects the faith that

  461. we have in God's provision here's what

  462. generosity reveals it's going to reveal

  463. the condition of your heart here's the

  464. second principle generosity comes from

  465. the

  466. Overflow of a changed heart I mentioned

  467. it earlier this morning you will never

  468. find Christians in the Bible who lack

  469. generosity matter of fact the two go

  470. together the church we found out in our

  471. series over the book of Acts were

  472. generous and how they spent their time

  473. together and how they contributed to the

  474. needs of the Saints and and how they

  475. prayed for one another and in how they

  476. use their giftings and their talents to

  477. push the kingdom of God forward so there

  478. are many ways in which you can use all

  479. of those time talents and treasures to

  480. push the kingdom forward right here at

  481. the Grove so generosity comes from the

  482. Overflow of a changed heart go with me

  483. to verses 7 through

  484. 11 Paul writes each one must give as he

  485. has decided in his

  486. heart not

  487. reluctantly or under compulsion for God

  488. loves a cheerful Giver let me just say

  489. this if it's not already been made clear

  490. my my

  491. desire is to challenge you and encourage

  492. you and even push you to conce consider

  493. having a heart that overflows with

  494. generosity but not to guilt you or shame

  495. you into it but to have you realize that

  496. I Am So Satisfied I'm so in love with

  497. Jesus that I want to embody everything

  498. he is about and what is Jesus about the

  499. scripture tells us that out of his great

  500. and Grand love for you he

  501. gave he gave his life away way and the

  502. greatest act of love the scripture tells

  503. us is when we lay down our lives for our

  504. friends when we give our lives away for

  505. the benefit of our community for the

  506. benefit of our sons and daughter for the

  507. benefit men of our wife for the benefit

  508. of the people around us that we give our

  509. lives away Through Time talent and

  510. treasures why because generosity it

  511. comes from the Overflow changed Hearts

  512. it's a reflection of who Jesus is verse

  513. eight and God is able to make all grace

  514. abound to you so that having all

  515. sufficiency and all things that all

  516. times you may abound in every good work

  517. as it is written he has distributed

  518. freely he has given to the poor his

  519. righteousness endures forever he who

  520. supplies seed to the swer and bread for

  521. food will supply and multiply your seed

  522. for sewing and increased the Harvest of

  523. your righteousness you will be enriched

  524. in every way to be generous in every way

  525. so you are enriched with time talent and

  526. treasures and the purpose of that

  527. enrichment is for what

  528. generosity he

  529. continues which through us will produce

  530. Thanksgiving this right here it's an

  531. invitation

  532. it's a calling and a beckoning to

  533. reflect the joy of the Gospel in your

  534. life this is why Paul will later write

  535. in the New Testament it is better to

  536. give than it is to receive because

  537. though receiving absolutely rolls up

  538. into praise and worship we'll get into

  539. that here in just a moment there is

  540. something unique about the contributions

  541. that we make about the giving of

  542. ourselves for the glory of of God and

  543. for the advancement of his kingdom

  544. cheerful giving is how Paul puts it it

  545. overflows from a

  546. transformed heart when we understand the

  547. depth of our Salvation how how God has

  548. transformed Our

  549. Lives we want to let that gratitude fuel

  550. our

  551. generosity so as we reflect on the joy

  552. of giving ask yourself what is

  553. motivating your

  554. giving let's talk about finances for for

  555. just a

  556. moment when you give your tith and your

  557. offering every

  558. week do you give

  559. cheerfully in other words is it an act

  560. of

  561. worship because worship is joyful

  562. worship is what lifts up the name of

  563. Jesus worship is what centers our heart

  564. on the gospel on the glory and the faith

  565. Fame of his majesty and Beauty when we

  566. give is it done

  567. cheerfully or is it done with a tight

  568. fist if it's done that way

  569. we we need to challenge ourselves

  570. to to call upon the name of

  571. Jesus so that he might change and and

  572. transform our hearts and our perspective

  573. this is this is what Paul is doing here

  574. here he's he's explaining the spirit of

  575. generosity is a

  576. result of the Gratitude and the worship

  577. that you bring to God let let the Cross

  578. of

  579. Christ remind you of why we are generous

  580. let the Ultimate gift that you have

  581. received fuel a heart of

  582. generosity so Paul points us then to a

  583. fin final truth he he's telling us that

  584. generosity there is a purpose behind it

  585. and it's this your generosity is going

  586. to inspire worship and gratitude in

  587. other words the heart that overflows in

  588. generosity Bears witness to others of

  589. God's work in your

  590. life and so when they see your attitude

  591. when they see your demeanor when they

  592. see the Overflow in the gospel of how

  593. you give of your time talent and

  594. treasures it will then stir them to

  595. worship and gratitude matter of fact

  596. Jesus said it this way in the gospel of

  597. Matthew during his Sermon on the Mount

  598. he said let your light shine before

  599. others that they may see your good deeds

  600. your contributions to the kingdom the

  601. giving of your time talent and treasures

  602. that they would bear witness to all of

  603. that and as a result give Glory and

  604. Honor honor to the father who is in

  605. heaven generosity inspires worship and

  606. gratitude verses 12 and 14 12-

  607. 14 for the ministry of this service now

  608. remember he's he's calling upon the

  609. Corinthians to remain faithful to their

  610. pledge their financial contributions and

  611. so he is saying the ministry of this

  612. service your contributions to the people

  613. in Jerusalem is not only supplying the

  614. needs of the Saints but watch this is

  615. also overflowing in many thanksgivings

  616. to God it's encouraging them in a moment

  617. when they're oppressed in a moment when

  618. they're being persecuted in a moment

  619. when they are literally

  620. starving their contribution brings

  621. encouragement that rolls up into

  622. gratitude now watch this their situation

  623. might not change but their perspective

  624. does and the people of Corinth are

  625. putting their fingers fingerprints on

  626. that do you know we have the opportunity

  627. to how we contribute Through Time

  628. talents and treasures to put our

  629. fingerprints on people's

  630. lives to encourage them to come

  631. alongside them to bless

  632. them God does an amazing work through

  633. your yes and your

  634. generosity he continues by their

  635. approval of the service they will

  636. glorify God because of your submission

  637. that comes from your conf confession of

  638. the gospel of Christ you see how that

  639. generosity is an overflow of this

  640. relationship and the generosity of your

  641. contribution for them and for all others

  642. while they long for you and pray for you

  643. because of the surpassing grace of God

  644. upon

  645. you when we are

  646. generous it serves as a

  647. catalyst for others to know

  648. Jesus do you know we have Ministry

  649. Partners here at the Grove I I say this

  650. often

  651. 15% of what comes into the Grove goes

  652. outside of the Grove to fund

  653. missionaries on the ground to fund

  654. organizations that fight for the

  655. innocent to fund gospel Endeavors to

  656. draw people to

  657. Salvation we we have our fingerprints on

  658. people getting saved in New York we have

  659. our Fingerprints of people coming to

  660. know Jesus in Kenya we have our

  661. Fingerprints of children being saved

  662. from sex and

  663. trafficking we have our fingerprints on

  664. those Ministries we have our

  665. fingerprints on crisis

  666. pregnancies of women who are thinking of

  667. terminating who are given the hope of

  668. the gospel and last year because we are

  669. a part of the greater Church

  670. contributing to things like that over

  671. 400 children were saved

  672. we have our fingerprints on those things

  673. why because of

  674. generosity it's an overflow of a chain

  675. chart it draws people to worship and

  676. gratitude so let's bring this all

  677. together I want us to really understand

  678. the theme

  679. Here generosity is not about the

  680. amount it's about your

  681. heart it's about establishing a pattern

  682. of giving that isn't just for a

  683. season that isn't just for a particular

  684. amount but but a pattern that overflows

  685. and interrupts every part of your

  686. life generosity is a declaration of

  687. faith in God's provision it's a

  688. reflection of gospel joy and it's a

  689. means of glorifying God which is why

  690. Paul brings it full circle in verse 15

  691. he says thanks be to God for his in

  692. expressable

  693. gift you know the the

  694. answer to being set free from

  695. materialism it's been set this way

  696. there's nothing wrong with with owning

  697. stuff there's nothing wrong with having

  698. good things just as long as the stuff

  699. doesn't own you and the good things

  700. don't have

  701. you nothing wrong with riches and

  702. wealth so long as those things are not

  703. your Idols there's nothing wrong with

  704. Pur pursuing greater things in life so

  705. long as those Pursuits don't interfere

  706. with the greatest Pursuits and that is

  707. Jesus Christ the answer to being set

  708. free from materialism and worldly

  709. desires is to give it

  710. away because the root of all evil is

  711. what it's not money it's the love of

  712. money it's the love for more things and

  713. and and here's what's incredible if you

  714. can let it

  715. go then you won't be chained to it you

  716. won't be imprisoned by it and my hope

  717. and my prayer is that here at the Grove

  718. we would continue to be a

  719. people whose

  720. generosity reflects the abundant grace

  721. of our savior let's pray together
