  1. well all right if you have a Bible or an

  2. app let's open it up we're going to be

  3. in the book of Titus this morning the

  4. book of Titus Chapter 2 we're going to

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  5. be looking at verses 11 through 14 we

  6. we're taking this Sunday really we're

  7. taking the next four weeks as we dive

  8. into a brand new sermon series that I've

  9. entitled The Coming glory and what we're

  10. going to be doing over the next couple

  11. of weeks is looking at what the Bible

  12. tells us about the return of Jesus what

  13. current events what worldly events are

  14. going to take place prior to the return

  15. of the Lord make make no mistake one day

  16. Jesus in all his majesty and glory is

  17. going to return to Earth as a matter of

  18. fact if you remember from our sermon

  19. series in the book of Acts chapter 1 we

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  20. read that When Jesus ascended back up to

  21. heaven the disciples stood there shocked

  22. and in awe and and really filled with a

  23. spirit of anticipation they stayed

  24. gazing up towards the clouds and the

  25. scripture tells us that two men in

  26. dazzling white robes appeared before the

  27. disciples and here's what they told him

  28. they said why do you stand GL glancing

  29. up at the heavens don't you know that in

  30. the same way Jesus ascended into heaven

  31. will be the same way in which he returns

  32. back to

  33. Earth uh if you remember as we continued

  34. in our series over the book of

  35. Acts that moment served as the Catalyst

  36. by which the New Testament Church was

  37. birthed and by which the mission of the

  38. Gospel was pushed and propelled forward

  39. and and here's what I want to do this

  40. morning I want to talk about what it

  41. looks like for us to live in light of

  42. eternal

  43. what does it mean for us that Jesus is

  44. going to return one day so often when it

  45. comes to the return of Jesus we we like

  46. to get into the weeds a little bit what

  47. is happening around the world all the

  48. disease the wars the famine uh the

  49. rumors of wars how of all of this how

  50. does all of this relate to the return of

  51. Christ and so often we could wait into

  52. the weaves without first understanding

  53. the ground on which we stand which is

  54. why I think it's important that this

  55. morning we establish a baseline for our

  56. faith because you can't focus on future

  57. promises if you don't first understand

  58. the foundation of the faith that you

  59. profess to believe and the Faith by

  60. which you stand and so here's here's my

  61. challenge to us this morning really

  62. here's here's been my prayer as I've

  63. been preparing for this series since

  64. last year my hope is that as we unpack

  65. not just our passage but but really the

  66. promises of scripture as it relates to

  67. the coming of Jesus that we would be

  68. challenged that we would be convicted

  69. and the life that we live would be

  70. completely transformed so that when

  71. others recognize who we are and how we

  72. live our lives they would be pointed to

  73. the gospel that we would be compelled

  74. because of the truth and the promise of

  75. the coming Glory of Jesus we would be

  76. compelled to live

  77. differently you know many of you know

  78. I've shared this with you before I I

  79. grew up with three other brothers two

  80. older one younger and my mom because she

  81. had to raise four boys had gray hair by

  82. the time she was in her early

  83. 30s and anyone who has a very large

  84. family knows that that haircuts for each

  85. of your children can really add up and

  86. can get quite

  87. expensive well my grandmother she lived

  88. about uh a block and a half to two

  89. blocks away from us and so to save money

  90. my mom would take us over there and my

  91. grandmother would then go on to give us

  92. haircuts I remember just just being

  93. young and and being very impatient I I

  94. would always ask my grandma as she was

  95. cutting my hair are you almost done

  96. and then after a while as as she Drew

  97. near to the end of giving me a haircut

  98. she she would say this in response to my

  99. question I would say Grandma are you

  100. almost done and and she would say just

  101. about and really what what those words

  102. signify to me is that the end was near

  103. so my

  104. impatience began to transform into

  105. anticipation one day this haircut is

  106. going to be done and she's going to wipe

  107. all the acccess hair off my neck I won't

  108. itch so much and so I was no longer

  109. impatient but I began to anticipate I

  110. began to be filled with

  111. excitement well I share that with you in

  112. order to say this we are living in the

  113. just about

  114. moment one day Jesus is going to come

  115. back and and because we know that Jesus

  116. is going to come back it should change

  117. the Outlook and the perspective that we

  118. have on life it should fill us not with

  119. Dread not with fear but with hopeful

  120. anticipation it should stir in our lives

  121. an

  122. excitment to await the return of Jesus

  123. but not only that to invite others in as

  124. well and so here in the book of Titus

  125. Paul begins to to instruct Pastor Titus

  126. as he's pastoring the churches on the

  127. island of creit on how they can live

  128. their lives in anticipation of the

  129. Lord's return if that name creit sounds

  130. familiar it's because that's where we

  131. get the word from the dictionary

  132. defines the word this way someone

  133. who is vogar evil and offensive in

  134. nature

  135. this was the context by which Titus and

  136. Paul were ministering to people on the

  137. island of cre and if you really think

  138. about it it's not much different from

  139. the context in which we live today we

  140. are surrounded by a spirit of Evil by a

  141. spirit of vulgarity by a spirit of

  142. offense that is all aimed at an attempt

  143. to silence the gospel message but you

  144. know this just as well as I do that that

  145. no matter what comes up against the

  146. people of God no matter what happens

  147. Against The Messengers of the Gospel it

  148. will never ever be

  149. silenced so Paul's

  150. instruction to Titus and the church the

  151. Christians there is to live counter

  152. culturally to live in light of the

  153. Blessed hope that we have and this is

  154. why our passage is so so relevant today

  155. so let's read together it'll be up on

  156. the screen Titus Chapter 2 beginning in

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  157. verse

  158. 11 here's what Paul writes for the grace

  159. of God has

  160. appeared bringing salvation for all

  161. people training us to renounce

  162. ungodliness and worldly

  163. passions and to live

  164. self-controlled upright and godly lives

  165. in the Pres

  166. age do you know what that's telling us

  167. in the present age Paul never mines

  168. words and and what I love about God's

  169. word is it is that every part of it is

  170. intentional none of it is wasted that

  171. there is meaning and intentionality

  172. behind it and so so when Paul declares

  173. to Pastor Titus that in this present age

  174. we must live self-controlled and godly

  175. lives here here's what he's telling us

  176. he is saying right now all the time

  177. everywhere we must live Godly lives not

  178. just when we're with a particular group

  179. of friends not just particular moments

  180. days or hours out of our week but

  181. everywhere all the time in what we say

  182. what we think and what we do we must

  183. live a life that is indicative of the

  184. faith that we Proclaim now I I want us

  185. to watch

  186. this notice what this is in view of

  187. notice that that as Paul is declaring to

  188. Pastor Titus that salvation is for all

  189. people that we are to renounce

  190. ungodliness and not only that we are

  191. then to live a

  192. self-controlled life notice what it is

  193. in view of verse

  194. 13 waiting for our blessed hope the

  195. appearing of the glory of our great God

  196. and Savior Jesus Christ who gave himself

  197. for us to redeem us from all lawlessness

  198. and I love this and to purify for

  199. himself a people for his own possessions

  200. we are not our own but we belong to the

  201. King of Kings and the Lord of lords and

  202. watch this the very people that belong

  203. to Jesus notice how Paul brings

  204. clarification how he comes full circle

  205. to this truth this theme this this

  206. thought that he's

  207. capturing it's not just any people but

  208. it's a particular people namely a people

  209. that have been saved by the grace of

  210. Jesus but but what sets these people

  211. apart what will set the Christians the

  212. church in Cre what will set them apart

  213. from everyone else from a culture that

  214. was rampant in idol worship from an

  215. agenda that was completely contrary and

  216. against anything that was righteous and

  217. holy what is going to set them apart and

  218. let me phrase it this way what is going

  219. to set us apart what sets The Grove

  220. apart what what sets your family apart

  221. what what sets your marriage apart what

  222. sets you apart at the office in you're

  223. meeting with clients when you're at the

  224. baseball games what sets you apart

  225. here's what it

  226. is a people for his own possession who

  227. who are zealous for good works who are

  228. passionate about living Christlike who

  229. whose every effort and energy and desire

  230. is about

  231. representing the image that they bear

  232. and all God's people said amen Lord

  233. Jesus would you bless your word Holy

  234. Spirit would you stir our hearts this

  235. morning here's what's incredible about

  236. chapter two chapter 2 is completely

  237. about living a life that honors the lord

  238. it's about living a life that's

  239. countercultural it's it's it's living a

  240. life in

  241. anticipation and in the context of our

  242. waiting for Jesus to return so so here's

  243. the basic and challenging question how

  244. do we live while we

  245. wait how do we live in the present

  246. in anticipation for the future or let me

  247. phrase it this way how do we live as

  248. citizens of Heaven while we are still

  249. here on Earth and what I love about our

  250. passage is Paul gives Pastor Titus three

  251. life

  252. applications that you can immediately

  253. begin to live out that'll be

  254. transformative that'll be lifechanging

  255. and not only that will serve as a

  256. witness to a world who is seeped in sin

  257. chaos darkness and

  258. evil as we gaze up into the heavens as

  259. as we fix our focus on the mission at

  260. hand how can we live our lives in light

  261. of Eternity three life applications go

  262. back to our passage we'll look at these

  263. one by one if you're taking notes here's

  264. the first one turn to

  265. Jesus pretty simple

  266. pretty Elementary easy in principle but

  267. very challenging in application amen

  268. turn to Jesus this is where it all

  269. begins this is where we find our start

  270. because you can't live in hope if you

  271. don't know the one who embodies hope

  272. which is why Paul is beginning with the

  273. Baseline of our faith hope is felt and

  274. hope is experienced when we stop chasing

  275. our own way and we begin to give our

  276. lives and turn our lives to Jesus hope

  277. is experienced in the midst of chaos and

  278. Titus pastured in the midst of chaos

  279. some of you work in the midst of chaos

  280. some of you are living life in the midst

  281. of chaos some of you are in a season

  282. that is so chaotic you you don't know

  283. what else to do and the only thing that

  284. you know what you can do is to continue

  285. to hope in

  286. Jesus and this is what Paul is getting

  287. at we are called to turn to Jesus go

  288. back with me to verse

  289. 11 for the grace of God has

  290. appeared bringing

  291. salvation for all

  292. people you know the beautiful thing

  293. about salvation is salvation only comes

  294. to those who need

  295. saving now I don't know if you know this

  296. I I I I pray that you do and if you

  297. don't I I pray that today would be your

  298. day every single one of us needs

  299. saving we need saving from the very sin

  300. that runs rampant that Reigns in rules

  301. in our life and so Paul as he is

  302. instructing Pastor Titus on on how to

  303. live a life in light of eternity begins

  304. with the most basic principle have you

  305. given your life to Jesus so here's a

  306. question I want to challenge you with

  307. today take some inventory of your

  308. heart take some inventory of your life

  309. and ask yourself do I know

  310. Jesus have I turn to him in faith am am

  311. I a

  312. recipient of the Gospel reality it that

  313. Paul lays out in verse 11 that the grace

  314. of God has appeared and not only has the

  315. grace of God appeared but the grace of

  316. God comes on the scene for a purpose for

  317. a reason with intentionality to bring

  318. Salvation for all people now there's a

  319. universal nature to the gospel that

  320. anyone Paul tells us in Romans chapter 9

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  321. anyone who calls upon the name of the

  322. Lord who believes

  323. that God the Father indeed raised the

  324. son through the through the power of the

  325. Holy Spirit raised him from the grave

  326. anyone who who confesses and believes

  327. shall be saved so so so there's a

  328. universal nature to the gospel but

  329. there's also a personal nature to the

  330. gospel and the personal nature is this

  331. have you confessed that Christ is Lord

  332. and do you believe in your heart that

  333. Christ was indeed raised from the grave

  334. now here's the thing it's one thing to

  335. agree with that in principle it's

  336. another thing to agree with it so much

  337. that it completely transforms your

  338. life and this is what Paul will get at

  339. this is why here in verse 14 he talks

  340. about a people who are the possession of

  341. God and not just any people not just

  342. people who have been saved by grace

  343. through principle but people who have

  344. been saved by grace and who are zealous

  345. for good works and so maybe you're

  346. sitting here this morning and you're

  347. telling yourself yes I've turned to

  348. Jesus yes and amen praise God high fives

  349. all around the gospel is good here's the

  350. follow-up question question is your life

  351. indicative of someone who's turned to

  352. Jesus in other words could could I take

  353. a bird's eye view of your past week of

  354. your past conversations of your past

  355. internet history of your past text

  356. messages your past

  357. snaps can I take a bird's eye view of

  358. those things and then be able to

  359. conclude yes you've turned to Jesus yes

  360. you've been an individual who has

  361. received his grace who has experienced

  362. salvation and is zealous for the good

  363. works of the gospel and here's the

  364. thing we don't know when Christ will

  365. return if you're coming into this series

  366. hoping to learn the most moment and the

  367. time and the date in which Christ will

  368. return then you will be

  369. disappointed because the scripture says

  370. that no one knows the time in which

  371. Christ will return but but we'll start

  372. to get into the weeds over the course of

  373. the next couple of weeks uh in terms of

  374. worldly events and what'll be happening

  375. um around the globe as we draw closer to

  376. to the return of Christ but but because

  377. we don't know when Christ is going to

  378. return that means we need to live our

  379. Liv lives as if his return will be at

  380. any

  381. moment and really that's the point not

  382. just the point that Paul is drawing here

  383. to Titus and and the church in cre but

  384. but that's the point of the scriptures

  385. that's the point of the Gospel that that

  386. when you are saved you you live your

  387. life zealous for good works not knowing

  388. when Christ is going to return he could

  389. return at any moment so you get your

  390. life Your Heart Right

  391. now you get saved

  392. now while deathbed confessions are a

  393. real thing and in my 20 plus years of of

  394. of ministry I've

  395. been God has founded in his grace in

  396. Mercy to allow me to witness deathbed

  397. confessions and they are some of the

  398. most beautiful

  399. things when people come to a

  400. realization of the sin in their life and

  401. how the only only way they they will

  402. close their eyes on this side and awaken

  403. in the presence of the father is to turn

  404. to Jesus now they're beautiful praise

  405. God for those moments but you don't know

  406. when Christ is going to return and you

  407. don't know the moment that your number

  408. will be

  409. drawn so turn to Jesus now his

  410. grace has appeared bringing salvation

  411. for all people so when we turn to him in

  412. faith when we call upon his name this is

  413. a moment that is

  414. transformative we begin to follow close

  415. to him everything about us begins to be

  416. influenced by him so that's the first

  417. one turn to Jesus here's the Second Life

  418. Application that Paul gives Titus turn

  419. from your

  420. sin again easy in principle a lot more

  421. challenging in application amen so we

  422. turn

  423. Jesus and it's not just turning to Jesus

  424. but it's recognizing that as I turn to

  425. Jesus you know this we've said this

  426. before as I turn to Jesus I I'm also

  427. turning away from my

  428. sin and what often will keep us maybe

  429. even right now what what is keeping you

  430. from living a life that is zealous for

  431. good works from from living a life that

  432. is indicative of someone who has placed

  433. faith in Jesus

  434. what is keeping you from that is the

  435. very sin that you are allowing to Reign

  436. and rule in your life the very sin that

  437. at the moment feels good but you're too

  438. prideful you're too in love with it to

  439. let it go to turn away from it and to

  440. turn to Jesus so what do we

  441. do well we follow the scriptures Paul

  442. gives Titus the pathway here to not

  443. allow sin to control his life go back

  444. with me to verse 12 what does he write

  445. training us to renounce ungodliness and

  446. worldly passions and to live what

  447. self-controlled upright and godly lives

  448. in this present age there's a couple of

  449. key phrases there but one key word that

  450. I want to focus on before we dive into

  451. what Paul is telling us there in verse

  452. 12 he uses the word

  453. training as we turn to Jesus and turn

  454. from sin we must train ourselves to

  455. renounce ungodliness training takes

  456. discipline training takes commitment

  457. training takes you understanding the

  458. value that it brings and if you are

  459. going to train your mind your heart and

  460. your body to renounce godliness it means

  461. that you and I need to be in the

  462. practice of centering and pointing ing

  463. our hearts towards Jesus because the

  464. more we focus on Jesus the less we focus

  465. on sin the more we preoccupy our

  466. thoughts our words and our actions with

  467. Jesus the less we are preoccupied with

  468. our sin this is why Paul is telling

  469. Titus and his people in cre you need to

  470. train yourself to renounce ungodliness

  471. you need to be

  472. practicing renouncing unod

  473. less the reason sin Reigns and rules in

  474. your life is because you don't renounce

  475. it and it's not just the ungodliness

  476. it's the worldly passions here's here's

  477. a reality we can all relate with you and

  478. I have vices in our

  479. life that if we are not being

  480. spiritually checked constantly if we are

  481. not training the mind and the heart to

  482. be centered on Jesus to renounce the s

  483. of this world those vices and those

  484. Temptations they'll get the best of

  485. us for some of us that happened last

  486. night that happened this past week

  487. whether it was a spirit of bitterness

  488. anger gossip lying sexual sin whatever

  489. it may be vices and Temptations If left

  490. unchecked will get the best of us and

  491. here's the thing you can't renounce

  492. it if you are not aware of of its

  493. dangers sin will bring nothing but chaos

  494. and death matter of fact Proverbs says

  495. this that there is a way that seems

  496. right to a man but its end is death

  497. there's another passage in the Old

  498. Testament that says many are plans in a

  499. man's heart but it's the purpose of God

  500. that prevails how does the purpose of

  501. God Prevail in someone's life when you

  502. turn to Jesus and you turn away from sin

  503. as we live in anticipation of the coming

  504. Glory what does my life look like

  505. now he also says live

  506. self-controlled

  507. lives some of us need to practice

  508. self-control I self included whether

  509. that's in in the words that we say the

  510. thoughts that we think the things that

  511. we

  512. do and did you know self-control is is a

  513. fruit of the

  514. spirit love joy peace patience kindness

  515. goodness faithfulness gentleness and

  516. selfcontrol

  517. you have the ability to control your

  518. actions you have the ability to control

  519. the way that you think how do I attain

  520. this ability you've got to train

  521. yourself to renounce ungodliness which

  522. is why Paul in Romans chapter 12 will

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  523. talk about how we are transformed by the

  524. renewing of our what of our mind it's

  525. not some psychological principle or some

  526. sociological principle that he's

  527. pointing to while those do have their

  528. benefits but he's talking about the

  529. importance of training the mind so that

  530. what the Mind thinks on the heart begins

  531. to feel for and what the heart feels for

  532. the body begins to act towards what is

  533. your mind thinking on what is your heart

  534. feeling for and what is your body acting

  535. towards and the way that we honor Jesus

  536. by turning to him and turning away from

  537. sin is by renouncing the

  538. ungodliness now watch this let's not

  539. miss this it's not just renouncing the

  540. ungodliness in our

  541. world it's renouncing the ungodliness in

  542. your own

  543. life it's one thing to read headlines

  544. it's one thing to read social media

  545. posts it's one thing to hear stories

  546. from people and it think man I need to

  547. anoun that which is what we are called

  548. to do as a people of God is to proclaim

  549. the truth in love to show people that

  550. Jesus is

  551. better the whole book of Hebrews is

  552. about Jesus being better but but have

  553. you confronted the sin in your own life

  554. to renounce it

  555. self-control doesn't give into

  556. feelings self-control thinks twice about

  557. speaking out of emotion self-control

  558. chooses not to post it on social media

  559. self-control gives those moments of

  560. anger and bitterness over to the Lord

  561. self-control is the holy spirit working

  562. in you and through you to pump the

  563. brakes on whatever vices or

  564. Temptations have control over your life

  565. and self-control calls us into greater

  566. devotion to Jesus that's the second

  567. thing here's the third thing so we turn

  568. to Jesus we turn from sin but then

  569. here's here's what Paul getting is

  570. getting at because this is all in view

  571. of something these are not just good

  572. principles to apply but there's a

  573. purpose they are in view of something

  574. and so here's the third Life Application

  575. we turn towards

  576. heaven our heart is gazing at the

  577. mission as as we anticipate the return

  578. of Jesus so you're either living in

  579. light of

  580. Eternity or you're living under the

  581. shadow of the prince of this

  582. world

  583. Satan the devil his demons his agenda

  584. there's really no in between you're

  585. either living for Jesus or you're living

  586. for Satan the New Testament will put it

  587. this way you're a slave everyone in here

  588. is a

  589. slave the question is not if you're a

  590. slave the question is what are you a

  591. slave to or let me put it another way

  592. what or rather who Masters

  593. you who influences you who who guides

  594. you and and and later throughout the

  595. Book of Titus a very short book you can

  596. read it this week minimal chapters Paul

  597. is get what he's getting at in the

  598. totality of the book is when you live

  599. your life differently in anticipation of

  600. the return of Jesus then it creates

  601. Ripple effects for people who don't know

  602. Jesus to recognize lifechanging

  603. transformation in you so that they might

  604. come to know Jesus and therefore live

  605. anticipation in anticipation of his

  606. return ver 13 let's close our time this

  607. morning what does Paul write we are

  608. waiting for our blessed hope the

  609. appearing of the glory of our great God

  610. and Savior Jesus

  611. Christ all of this is lived and light of

  612. his return so here's here's the question

  613. we'll close on what are your eyes fixed

  614. on are they locked on

  615. Heaven are they locked on the Savior are

  616. they cherishing the gospel or are you

  617. being distracted by the things of this

  618. world are you being pulled away from

  619. your purpose

  620. because of vices and temptations that

  621. you have not flexed and exercised

  622. self-control over that you that you have

  623. been too in love with to

  624. renounce what are your eyes fixed on

  625. when our focus is on heaven when we are

  626. locked in and engaged then your life our

  627. lives will reflect that

  628. hope as we await the coming Glory

  629. and so let's let's ask ourselves let's

  630. confront our lives with this question if

  631. if Jesus returned

  632. today would I be

  633. ready My Hope and my prayer is that the

  634. answer is

  635. yes and if the answer is no in Ju Just a

  636. moment we're going to have a time of

  637. response if your answer is no I want to

  638. invite you to respond to the gospel

  639. message

  640. that he who knew no sin that's Jesus

  641. became sin for us that's you and I so

  642. that in him in Christ we you and I might

  643. become the righteousness of God because

  644. of Christ

  645. Jesus if your heart confesses that the

  646. scripture says the grace of God is for

  647. you salvation is for you let it be a

  648. transformative moment for you so that

  649. you can leave here knowing that you are

  650. the possession of Jesus that you are his

  651. very own and that your life is so

  652. changed and transformed that you become

  653. zealous for good works would you pray

  654. with me
