  1. all right if you have a Bible or an app

  2. let's open it up we are back in the book

  3. of Acts this morning Acts chapter 9

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  4. we're going to be closing out um chapter

  5. nine of the book of Acts by looking at

  6. verses 32- 43 um last year we began a

  7. series over the book of Acts and

  8. actually this Sunday takes us to week 24

  9. over our series but before we dive into

  10. our passage I want to read to you what I

  11. read when we began this series um almost

  12. half a year or or over a year ago in

  13. Acts 28: 31 now remember there's no

  14. official ending to the book of Acts and

  15. Luke the author of The Gospel of Luke

  16. has purposefully done that and he's done

  17. it that way so that we would be a

  18. continuation of what is taken place all

  19. throughout the 28 chapters as a matter

  20. of fact it's been set this way often

  21. that the church today is living in Acts

  22. chap 29 that what the Holy Spirit began

  23. back in Acts chapter 1 and chapter 2 uh

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  24. and as God began to work through the

  25. disciples and the Church of the New

  26. Testament God continues to do today and

  27. so in Acts

    Acts 28:31

  28. 28:31 Paul is imprisoned in Rome Paul

  29. likely knows that he will die matter of

  30. fact history tells us that he died at

  31. the hands of the Roman Emperor here's

  32. what he writes or here's what Luke

  33. continues to tell us to write I can go

  34. to a handheld if I need to no am I good

  35. okay Acts

    Acts 28:31

  36. 28:31 says proclaiming the kingdom of

  37. God and teaching about the Lord Jesus

  38. Christ with all boldness and without

  39. hindrance this is what the gospel is

  40. about it's about moving forward

  41. unhindered and what we're going to

  42. discover in our message this morning as

  43. we look at the bottom part of Acts

  44. chapter n is we're going to discover

  45. what the power of the Gospel

  46. accomplishes as a matter of fact we know

  47. that the gospel is never stagnant the

  48. gospel is constantly moving and working

  49. it breathes new life into places that

  50. are dead it it bre it brings new

  51. perspective itive and New Hope I'm I'm

  52. just going to um switch to a handheld

  53. it's it's kind of bugging

  54. me check mike check you know what a

  55. handheld means right that's DJ Roland

  56. time so so acts is is this picture of

  57. Gospel Power moving forward forward as

  58. it brings focus and perspective into our

  59. lives into our families into our work

  60. into really every part about us this is

  61. what the book of Acts is about and

  62. really um let me give you a review of

  63. what is happening so far up until

  64. chapter nine we know in Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  65. and Acts chapter 2 we read about the

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  66. Ascension of Christ the disciples

  67. experienced the birth of the church

  68. through the dwelling power of the holy

  69. spirit this takes place on the day of

  70. Pentecost and the power of the spirit is

  71. manifested in what Luke writes as

  72. tongues of fire it's incredible because

  73. when we take the proclamation of the

  74. Gospel forward it ignites passion it

  75. ignites new life it brings

  76. Resurrection to things that were perhaps

  77. long for begotten and long dead in our

  78. life and then in Acts chapter 3 through

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  79. chapter 5 we read about the power of the

  80. indwelling Holy Spirit bringing

  81. miracles to the worlds around the

  82. disciples as they move forward preaching

  83. boldly as the church is being persecuted

  84. the gospel continues to thrive and move

  85. forward Acts chapter 6 and chapter 7 we

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  86. see leadership being established within

  87. the church we see this calling of

  88. service by deacons to minister to the

  89. people of the church and then we read

  90. about the first martyr Stephen who is

  91. arrested for proclaiming the gospel and

  92. in giving his defense of the Gospel he

  93. begins to preach the gospel he's dragged

  94. outside he's stoned to death and we read

  95. that there was a young Pharisee by the

  96. name of Saul who approved of the murder

  97. of Steven we get to Acts chapter 8 and

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  98. we see that the gospel continues to move

  99. forward that that now it's breaking out

  100. of Jerusalem and it's moving forward

  101. into the Judean region making its way to

  102. Samaria and we even read about a moment

  103. that a gentleman by the name of Phillip

  104. has with an

  105. Ethiopian he proclaims the go gospel

  106. from the book of Isaiah the Ethiopian is

  107. saved is baptized and we get a small

  108. glimpse of how the gospel would be taken

  109. into the continent of Africa and then

  110. here in Acts chapter nine if you

  111. remember last year we read about the

  112. conversion of Saul who later is referred

  113. to as Paul as the gospel continues to

  114. Break Forth as a testimony of God's

  115. power what does all this mean what is

  116. all of this showing us it's showing us

  117. that the gospel is a gospel of action

  118. that what God has destined and what God

  119. has purposed for your life will come to

  120. pass through the power the indwelling

  121. power of the Holy Spirit and and here's

  122. what we'll find in just a moment in Acts

  123. chapter nine that the gospel is not just

  124. for the Jews but the gospel is for the

  125. Gentiles and if if you are unable to

  126. trace your ancestry your genetics back

  127. to the Israelite Nation then you are

  128. considered a gentile or some

  129. translations would would call you a a

  130. Greek it is a generic term to

  131. distinguish everyone else outside of

  132. Jewish

  133. ancestry and this has been prophesied

  134. all the way back in Genesis 12 when God

  135. called Father Abraham and and said that

  136. you would be the man by which all the

  137. nations of the Earth shall be blessed it

  138. was a prophetic foreshadowing of the

  139. coming Savior Jesus Christ that through

  140. him you and I would experience salvation

  141. we would experience Gospel Power we

  142. would experience new life you fast

  143. forward several hundred years the

  144. prophet Isaiah in Isaiah chapter 49

    Isaiah 49 chapter mention

  145. talks about salvation reaching the ends

  146. of the Earth and this is what

  147. Dr Luke shows us in Acts chapter

  148. n that the gospel is on the precipice of

  149. entering into Gentile

  150. territory matter of fact it is an

  151. introduction into what will take place

  152. in Acts chapter 10 we'll learn more

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  153. about that next week but here's what it

  154. reads Acts chapter n beginning in verse

  155. 32 now as Peter went here and there

  156. among them all he came down also to the

  157. Saints who lived at L there he found a

  158. man named anas bedridden for eight years

  159. who was

  160. paralyzed Peter said to him anas Jesus

  161. Christ heals you rise and make your bed

  162. now now watch this and

  163. immediately he

  164. rose and all the Resident of L and

  165. Sharon saw him and they turned to the

  166. Lord now there was in japa a disciple

  167. named Tabitha which translated means

  168. Dorcas she was full of good works and

  169. acts of Charity in those days she became

  170. ill and died and when they had washed

  171. her they laid her in an upper room since

  172. L was near japa the disciples hearing

  173. that Peter was there sent to two men to

  174. him urging him please come to us

  175. without delay if if you're thinking

  176. there are some parallels here of what

  177. took place with Jesus in Matthew Chapter

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  178. 5 or even Jesus in the raising of

  179. Lazarus I believe Luke makes that

  180. intentional so Peter Rose and went with

  181. them and when he arrived they took him

  182. to the upper room all the Widow Stood

  183. Beside him weeping and showing tunics

  184. and other garments that Dorcas made

  185. while she was with them but Peter put

  186. them all

  187. outside he knelt down and prayed and

  188. turning to the body he said

  189. Tabitha

  190. arise and she opened her eyes and when

  191. she saw Peter she sat up he gave her his

  192. hand and raised her up then calling the

  193. Saints and widows he presented her alive

  194. and it became known throughout all japa

  195. and many believed in the Lord and he

  196. stayed in japa for many days with one

  197. Simon ATT Tanner and all God's people

  198. said amen Lord would you bless your word

  199. Holy Spirit this morning would you stir

  200. our

  201. hearts now as we read this passage I

  202. don't know if you picked up on some

  203. pictures that are taking place here

  204. remember acts is a book of pictures Luke

  205. does an amazing job painting these

  206. portraits of of biblical pictures as we

  207. get glimpses of how God moves and works

  208. and and weaves the power of the spirit

  209. in your life and I've reminded us this

  210. throughout our Series in the book of

  211. Acts and I want to continue to remind us

  212. about this today that the way God moved

  213. then is precisely how he moves now how

  214. he used Peter to demonstrate Gospel

  215. Power power is how he uses us today to

  216. demonstrate Gospel Power or or maybe you

  217. feel like anas paralyzed bedridden not

  218. able to move not not able to go about

  219. your daily lives because of some sinful

  220. addiction some past habit or some

  221. consequences of past mistakes that you

  222. are still dealing with or maybe you feel

  223. like Tabatha

  224. Dorcas dead gone caught in a wave of

  225. evil and chaos and perhaps you feel that

  226. that there is no coming back from that

  227. let me just tell you this there's power

  228. in the Gospel of Jesus and here's what I

  229. love about what Peter demonstrates we'll

  230. get to this here in just a

  231. moment Peter is a man full of Faith so

  232. faithful in fact that that we read in

  233. the book of Acts that that people knew

  234. that he possessed resurrecting power as

  235. a matter of fact all throughout the the

  236. book of Acts you read about these signs

  237. and these Miracles and these Wonders

  238. that are done at the hands of the

  239. disciples and it's not so that they

  240. would get credit it's not so that people

  241. would turn to Peter or Paul or to John

  242. or to the other disciples but that they

  243. would know that there is power in the

  244. Gospel of Jesus Christ and so real

  245. simple question I want to ask you this

  246. morning is have you experienced Gospel

  247. Power in your life

  248. have you turned in faith to Jesus Christ

  249. so that the power of the Gospel of Jesus

  250. Christ that indwelt the Believers back

  251. in the book of Acts is the same Gospel

  252. Power that can indwell you

  253. today as a matter of fact I want to go

  254. back through our passage this morning

  255. and I want to walk us through each of

  256. these pictures Luke so majestically

  257. paints three pictures we'll look at them

  258. one by one if you're taking notes here's

  259. the first picture Gospel Power conquers

  260. sin and

  261. death this is something that we pick up

  262. immediately and and here's what I love

  263. Luke as he is recording the history of

  264. the New Testament Church he doesn't

  265. mince

  266. words he's not pretentious there's no

  267. fluff he gets to the meat of the matter

  268. and here's the thing if you have not

  269. understood what the power of the Gospel

  270. is Luke makes it plain as day right

  271. here verse

  272. 34 we read that Peter said to anas Jesus

  273. Christ heals you rise and make your bed

  274. and what's recorded there and

  275. immediately he rose you fast forward to

  276. verse 40 again Peter says Tabitha arise

  277. and she opened her eyes and when she saw

  278. Peter she sat up and he gave her his

  279. hand and raised her

  280. up two separate

  281. instances a man who's

  282. paralyzed a woman who has

  283. died both a

  284. representation of what's to come with

  285. Gospel Power really these two instances

  286. represent the human condition that we

  287. are paralyzed by the sin in our life and

  288. as long as we remain apart from Jesus

  289. because of rebellion because of a lack

  290. of faith and because of all that the

  291. devil attempts to do in his stealing

  292. killing and destroying of your peace of

  293. your joy of your focus in your life then

  294. we remain dead in our trespasses

  295. Paralyzed by the power of what the

  296. scripture calls the prince of this

  297. world and here's what I love Peter he

  298. doesn't offer self-help help does he he

  299. doesn't offer religious rituals what

  300. does he do he offers the only thing that

  301. he knows will have effect the only thing

  302. that he knows will bring about result he

  303. offers the name of

  304. Jesus you know last week we talked about

  305. what it means to live with gospel

  306. urgency and how we must be

  307. compelled and how we must be disciplined

  308. enough to recognize the world rot in

  309. chaos lost souls who as Jesus declares

  310. in the Gospel of Luke are helpless

  311. people sheep without a Shepherd who are

  312. in desperate need of the Gospel that

  313. that we should be so compelled to share

  314. with them the same life-saving message

  315. that has transformed us but often times

  316. if you're anything like me you feel

  317. unqualified you feel like maybe you

  318. don't have a good enough story maybe you

  319. don't feel equ ipped enough or or or or

  320. or maybe you you feel lost in the shame

  321. of the sin that once defin your life and

  322. you don't think anyone will listen or

  323. even recognize the change in you when

  324. it's all said and done you and I apart

  325. from Christ have nothing to

  326. offer except one

  327. thing and that's what Peter knew and

  328. that's what Peter offered it's the name

  329. of Jesus and what does the name of Jesus

  330. do it brings

  331. dead things to life anas was

  332. paralyzed and I think often times we're

  333. paralyzed as well Paralyzed by our sin

  334. powerless to stand before the holy God

  335. of creation we're Tabitha as Paul tells

  336. us in Ephesians chapter 2 verse one dead

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  337. in our trespasses and here's the thing

  338. we're unable to raise

  339. ourselves no matter how hard we try no

  340. no matter often we come to church no

  341. matter how much money we give no matter

  342. how many Bible verses we memorize how

  343. many Bible studies we sit on how many

  344. Ministries we serve in which are all

  345. admirable things and qualities that we

  346. hope that you would possess and

  347. character traits that we hope would be

  348. indicative of a lifestyle that's

  349. committed to the gospel the one thing

  350. that resurrects us from death to life is

  351. the name of Jesus so what do we do we

  352. recognize that Brokenness is The Human

  353. Condition this is what

  354. Peter understands we're we're all

  355. cracked by sin we're all wounded by life

  356. we're all burdened by the weight of our

  357. own failures but let me share with you

  358. some words of Jesus Luke Chapter

  359. 4:18 Jesus says the spirit of the Lord

  360. is upon me he has sent me don't miss

  361. this he has sent me to Proclaim Liberty

  362. to the captive

  363. and to set at Liberty those who are

  364. oppressed the reason Gospel Power

  365. conquers sin and death is because the

  366. gospel does not offer temporary

  367. relief but it offers eternal

  368. life it offers perspective and focus and

  369. a shift where complete and total

  370. restoration of a soul that was once set

  371. apart because of evil is now set apart

  372. because of the Holiness of Jesus Christ

  373. have you

  374. experienced the power of the Gospel over

  375. the sin of your

  376. life over the death that perhaps you

  377. find yourself

  378. in Gospel Power conquers sin and death

  379. here's the second picture that Luke

  380. paints for us it's about Gospel Power

  381. moving forward did you pick up on what

  382. the result or or rather what the effect

  383. the Ripple effects are of the healing of

  384. anas and the resurrection of Tabitha go

  385. back with me to verses 35 and

  386. 42 here's what Luke

  387. writes and all the residents of L and

  388. Sharon saw him who did they see they saw

  389. that a

  390. who was paralyzed bedridden for years

  391. was fully healed fully restored here's

  392. here's what makes it all the more

  393. miraculous is that he didn't have to

  394. learn to walk what happens if your bed

  395. written for eight years if you're

  396. paralyzed your your muscles go through

  397. atrophy right your muscle mass decreases

  398. your your bone structure even begins to

  399. decrease increase and and wither away

  400. and yet in that moment of healing

  401. muscles are restored bones joints and

  402. marrows are as they should be this is

  403. what was recognized in the healing of

  404. anas and it says they turned to the Lord

  405. verse 42 Luke continues he says and it

  406. became known throughout all japa what

  407. became known that Tabitha was

  408. raised that Tabitha received life that

  409. she was new and made whole the scripture

  410. says because of that many believed

  411. here's the important thing that you and

  412. I need to recognize about Gospel

  413. Power when God transforms your life and

  414. he resurrects you out of sin and death

  415. he does so not for your own purpose only

  416. but so that your story would go forward

  417. in Gospel Power and people would

  418. recognize the change in

  419. you and when they see the change in you

  420. it opens up the doors for

  421. questions what is it that is different

  422. in your life why did you turn away from

  423. the person you once were how did you

  424. overcome that pain or that suffering how

  425. was your marriage restored how did you

  426. give up addictions and and and things

  427. that that grasped you and things that

  428. enslaved you and things that Shackled

  429. you how did you get over those things

  430. and it opens up the door to

  431. Proclaim Gospel Power you see these

  432. miraculous healings they're not meant to

  433. be isolated and let let me just

  434. challenge you with this your story is

  435. never meant to be an isolated

  436. story you have a story on how God has

  437. transformed you and how God has changed

  438. you I know any of your

  439. stories and how it is a clear picture of

  440. God's glory shining forth in your life

  441. to bring resurrection and

  442. restoration there are some stories that

  443. I don't know quite as well as

  444. others but don't keep that story hidden

  445. don't bury it away don't tuck it in a

  446. drawer somewhere never be ashamed or

  447. embarrassed of your story because your

  448. story has the name of Jesus written all

  449. over it and if it has the name of Jesus

  450. written all over it it's a story I say

  451. this often that's worth telling to tell

  452. people how Christ has transformed your

  453. life how he gave you Liberty and freedom

  454. and brought Resurrection to your life

  455. this transformed life is a ripple effect

  456. that moves outward calling others to

  457. Faith do you know

  458. ripples only go go so far and it's only

  459. dependent on the size of the stone that

  460. is cast into the

  461. water let me tell you we have the

  462. biggest rock the universe has ever known

  463. we have the truth of God a power that

  464. brings you and I to life a power that

  465. restores us and that is a rock that when

  466. it's cast into the Harvest fields of the

  467. world around us has Ripple effects that

  468. will never waste away this is why what

  469. God began in Acts chapter 2 on the day

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  470. of Pentecost with the indwelling power

  471. of the Holy Spirit God continues to do

  472. today through you through me if you're a

  473. teacher in your classroom if you're a

  474. student in your hallways if you're a

  475. business owner in your office if you're

  476. a Salesman with your

  477. clients whatever vocation God has given

  478. you that's the Harvest field where

  479. gospel power the power that that lives

  480. and breathes and moves in you goes

  481. forward so the gospel it conquers sin

  482. and death the gospel moves forward it's

  483. a clear pattern that we see all

  484. throughout the scriptures that whenever

  485. the power of Jesus is

  486. displayed the power of the Gospel moves

  487. forward and it's not just so that your

  488. life would be transformed right because

  489. here's here's the goal the goal is that

  490. what you and I experience here as

  491. wonderful and as powerful and as

  492. encouraging and lifegiving as it

  493. is listen we walk in Disobedience to the

  494. Lord if we leave it in

  495. here if if this place exists for nothing

  496. more than a spiritual fix then you and I

  497. have missed

  498. it if this place exist exists for

  499. nothing more than ful to fulfill a

  500. social longing that we have or just to

  501. connect with people in a deeper

  502. spiritual level and we don't do that out

  503. there then we're missing the

  504. mark then we're not walking in Gospel

  505. Power because here's the thing the

  506. things that you treasure and the things

  507. that you love they will naturally

  508. overflow from your life they'll be a

  509. part of who you are they'll be a natural

  510. part of how you speak of how you make

  511. decisions of how you go about

  512. interacting with the world around you so

  513. let me just pause for a

  514. moment let me speak to Believers in this

  515. room and let me speak

  516. to we'll call you seekers in this room

  517. if if you're a Believer I pray that this

  518. is challenging to you maybe for some of

  519. us it's affirming what we are already

  520. doing and if it's affirming us then then

  521. it's empowering us and embold us to

  522. further go and proclaim the power of the

  523. Gospel the one that conquers sin and

  524. death the one that moves forward without

  525. hindrance but maybe for others it's it's

  526. holding us accountable I share this

  527. often when whenever I preach to you

  528. whenever I study with with the word and

  529. and it creates tension in me and I

  530. wrestle with it there's there there's

  531. accountability and so I've had to ask

  532. myself this week am am I walking in

  533. Gospel Power are the Ripple effects of

  534. what of what Christ has done in my life

  535. made evident to the people around me is

  536. that true for you Christian is that true

  537. for you son and daughter of God are you

  538. walking with the effects of a changed

  539. life the

  540. scripture calls you and I to die to

  541. self that means we cast aside Roland

  542. cast aside what Roland

  543. wants my my dreams my goals my ambitions

  544. are always second place to the glory of

  545. God this is why I love Matthew chapter

  546. 6:33 right my favorite words of Jesus in

  547. the New Testament Jesus says seek first

  548. the kingdom of God and its righteousness

  549. and all other things will be added to

  550. you it's not wrong that we have goals

  551. dreams and Ambitions and I pray that you

  552. would fulfill your goals dreams and

  553. ambitions

  554. but we must never pursue things at the

  555. cost of the Gospel we must never move

  556. forward at the cost of the

  557. Gospel but if the gospel is our

  558. everything then everything else around

  559. us will come into Focus come into

  560. perspective and so here's the challenge

  561. right here's the challenge about

  562. Christianity we talked about this last

  563. week being a Christian is the hardest

  564. thing that you will ever

  565. do if all we're ever led to believe is

  566. it be a Christian is easy then we've

  567. missed the truth of the

  568. scriptures are there Seasons where it's

  569. easy to be a Christian sure they come in

  570. pockets and some of those Seasons last

  571. far longer than other Seasons I pray

  572. that you would have

  573. seasons where you find that it is easy

  574. to be a Christian and that and that

  575. comes in in in one of two ways it's

  576. really a double-sided coin it comes in

  577. moments that the more disciplined we are

  578. to pursue the Lord and to pursue two

  579. spiritual disciplines then then the

  580. easier it becomes to say to say no to

  581. sin right think of an athlete Paul uses

  582. uh athletic terms and metaphors uh

  583. regularly in his letters and he talks

  584. about how we run the race and how how we

  585. how um um uh a bodybuilder lifts weights

  586. to prepare the body so we lift our

  587. spiritual weights to prepare the soul

  588. and the more weights that you lift the

  589. easier the lifting becomes

  590. and so sometimes those those moments

  591. will come easy other

  592. times God will put us in the fire or God

  593. will allow the fire to burn a

  594. bit to test whether we are truly in the

  595. Lord to test whether Gospel Power is

  596. real in our life we just came off a

  597. series about the end times about what's

  598. going to happen when Christ returned and

  599. the scripture talks about that The

  600. Closer we get to the return of Jesus

  601. Christ the

  602. worse off the world will be sin will

  603. begin to magnify sin will begin to

  604. increase first Thessalonians tells us

  605. that the restrainer will be removed that

  606. the enemy will be released from the

  607. prisons to wreak havoc in a way that

  608. we've never experienced or seen before

  609. and that is to separate those that are

  610. real in their faith from those that are

  611. not and so when the scripture calls us

  612. to die to self it calls us to understand

  613. the

  614. cost are we counting the cost no one who

  615. puts their hands to the plow and looks

  616. back is fit for the kingdom of God no

  617. Builder will immediately begin to build

  618. without first surveying the land

  619. counting the costs and accounting for

  620. all the labor and materials that it will

  621. take to complete the project this is

  622. what Christ calls us to do

  623. Gospel Power conquer sin and death

  624. gospel power moves forward here's here's

  625. the last picture that Luke is painting

  626. Gospel Power breaks down

  627. barriers I think this is my favorite

  628. part about our

  629. passage remember in in Acts chapter 10

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  630. Peter is going to have a dream a vision

  631. given to him by God and this dream and

  632. vision is is going to prompt him with a

  633. door SW wide open to take the gospel to

  634. the Gentile World The Gospel is moving

  635. forward into Gentile territory it is

  636. fulfilling the scriptural prophecy this

  637. foreshadowing of Salvation going to the

  638. ends of the Earth go with me to verse

  639. 43 and he stayed in japa for many days

  640. with one Simon a

  641. tener now this might seem as just a

  642. tidbit of information but remember every

  643. word every sentence in the scripture

  644. serves a purpose it it's not a passing

  645. detail as a matter of fact if we

  646. understand Jewish culture and we

  647. understand what it took for someone to

  648. be a Tanner particularly in the days of

  649. the Bible then this is a significant

  650. moment of God's plan

  651. unfolding and his power in purpose

  652. coming to pass what this verse shows us

  653. is God is breaking down this dividing

  654. wall between Jews and

  655. Gentiles so let me just set the stage

  656. for you Peter being a disciple of Jesus

  657. spending three and a half years with him

  658. Jesus who by the way was a Jewish rabbi

  659. did you know that and as a Jewish rabbi

  660. of course Jesus would have taught his

  661. disciples Old Testament law Old

  662. Testament purification rituals and

  663. traditions Peter as well as the rest of

  664. of the disciples were no

  665. strangers to these rules and these laws

  666. and what it meant to be considered clean

  667. and unclean now watch this when Luke

  668. tells us here at the end of chapter nine

  669. that Peter stayed with Simon who is a

  670. Tanner any Jewish individual reading

  671. this would have lost their mind let me

  672. tell you why because a Tanner would have

  673. been someone who worked with dead

  674. animals and if you touched anything dead

  675. in Jewish culture and Jewish tradition

  676. you were considered

  677. unclean not only that if you the unclean

  678. person were around someone who was

  679. ceremonially clean and there was

  680. interaction and touching between you and

  681. them then the clean person was now

  682. considered unclean Peter knows this and

  683. Peter is taking a huge step forward when

  684. he stays with this man Simon the Tanner

  685. he's risking being perceived by everyone

  686. else as unclean well you're a disciple

  687. of Jesus wouldn't you know the law

  688. wouldn't you know the ceremonial

  689. cleanliness laws and yet you were

  690. staying with this individual who's

  691. considered unclean this is a significant

  692. moment because it's

  693. emphasizing how Gospel Power breaks down

  694. barriers cultural barriers social

  695. barriers religious barriers and it opens

  696. the way for all people who will call

  697. upon the name of Jesus to be included in

  698. his

  699. kingdom the gospel breaks down

  700. barriers this is what the gospel does it

  701. crosses cultural lines it dismantles

  702. pretenses religious pride and it

  703. welcomes the

  704. outcast I don't know what Simon may have

  705. been thinking but I can imagine Peter

  706. knocking on his door and saying hey I'm

  707. going to crash here we're g to spend a

  708. couple of days together together and

  709. Simon thinking well

  710. what don't you know the law don't you

  711. know the rules Peter you'll be

  712. ostracized by the other Jewish people

  713. they'll look at you as

  714. unclean and Peter understands Gospel

  715. Power how Gospel Power breaks down

  716. barriers you know what I love about our

  717. church what I love about our

  718. community that it's made up of young and

  719. old alike people from different

  720. backgrounds ethnicities cultures

  721. socioeconomic statuses made up of White

  722. Collar blue collar

  723. workers and that's what the Community of

  724. Faith is God's kingdom is a mosaic of

  725. people from every Walk of Life here's

  726. what I believe I believe some of us will

  727. get to heaven we'll be surprised that he

  728. or she is there you made

  729. it and their response is by the name of

  730. J

  731. Jesus this is the power of the Gospel it

  732. breaks down barriers so let me just

  733. challenge us with this we're run out of

  734. time call into question your own

  735. prejudices all of us in here we have a

  736. barrier that exists I have a barrier

  737. that exists and that's a barrier that we

  738. need to deal with and we need to call

  739. upon the name of the Lord to break it

  740. down whether it's because people don't

  741. look like us vote like us dress like us

  742. think like

  743. us but every individual Bears the image

  744. of God and because they bear the image

  745. of God we are called to go and share the

  746. gospel with

  747. them this is what Peter's demonstrating

  748. this is what Luke is writing in Acts

  749. chapter nine the gospel was never meant

  750. to remain stagnant and Idol and let me

  751. just say this some of us in this room

  752. the gospel is idle in your life it's

  753. stagnant in your life and you've been

  754. coming to church for years maybe even

  755. decades maybe you've been a Christian

  756. more than three quarters of your life

  757. but the gospel has only remained in you

  758. and it's never gone

  759. forward what would it look

  760. like if we as a church body

  761. committed to moving forward in Gospel

  762. Power we're experiencing Resurrection

  763. from death and our

  764. sin why not show that to the world

  765. around us why not break down the

  766. barriers that exist in our life because

  767. here's what the gospel is about it's not

  768. about who you once were it's about who

  769. Christ

  770. is and who is Christ he's the name that

  771. is above all names he's the king of

  772. kings and the Lord of lords the one who

  773. has called you out of death in your sin

  774. and just as Peter took the hand of

  775. Tabitha and said arise Christ takes your

  776. heart and he says

  777. arise and he resurrects you to New Life

  778. Peter walked into some impossible

  779. situations a paralyzed man who couldn't

  780. heal

  781. himself a woman who couldn't raise

  782. herself but what happened in both

  783. instances Gospel Power was

  784. demonstrated who are you in this

  785. story I I think at some point in our

  786. life we're all three if you're a

  787. Believer are you an paralyzed by the sin

  788. in your life are you

  789. Tabitha

  790. dead falling victim to the power of the

  791. enemy of this

  792. world are you Peter moving forward in

  793. Gospel Power which one are you I pray

  794. that we would be a

  795. people that aren't hesitant to step out

  796. of our comfort

  797. zones that we would take Gospel Power

  798. live it boldly and Proclaim it to a

  799. world in need

  800. let's be a

  801. people who with changed

  802. lives make it our mission to take the

  803. name of Jesus to this community so that

  804. it can change their life would you pray

  805. with me
