  1. amen praise God I'm glad you're here if

  2. you have a Bible or an app let's open it

  3. up we're going to be in Acts chapter 10

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  4. this morning Acts chapter 10 we're going

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  5. to be looking at the first eight verses

  6. it's an incredible story in Acts chap 10

  7. veres 1-8 are part of a larger story

  8. throughout the rest of Acts chapter 10

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  9. if you remember from last week we closed

  10. Acts chapter n by looking at how Peter

  11. stayed in the city of japa with a man

  12. named Simon who Luke tells us was a tner

  13. an individual who skin animals tan their

  14. hides and sold them as His livelihood

  15. that was his occupation and it may sound

  16. or it may read like some random tidbit

  17. of information but this is what we need

  18. to remember when it comes to God's word

  19. there is no random sentences random

  20. words or random tidbits of information

  21. but but every sentence and every word in

  22. God's word to us has purpose it has

  23. meaning and what it demonstrates to us

  24. is God is now through Peter and we'll

  25. read here in just a moment through a man

  26. named Cornelius he is opening up this

  27. gateway to fulfill his call and really

  28. his prophetic Visions to bring the

  29. gospel and salvation to the end of the

  30. Earth Jesus came through the line of

  31. Abraham he came through the line of King

  32. David Jesus indeed is the Lamb of God

  33. who takes away the sins of

  34. the world and Jesus's mission primarily

  35. was focused in the city of Jerusalem in

  36. the surrounding areas and therefore was

  37. focused on the Jewish Nation but it was

  38. through and it's through the Jewish

  39. nation that that salvation in Isaiah

    Isaiah 49:6

  40. 49:6 goes to the ends of the Earth and

  41. this is what we begin seeing here in

  42. Acts chapter 10 and so what I want to

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  43. look at this morning is I want to look

  44. at how we can all position ourselves of

  45. cesaria he was in charge of a group of

  46. soldiers anywhere between 100 to 600 men

  47. he was a man of leadership a man of

  48. opulence influence wealth and a man of

  49. discipline and His Story shows us that

  50. when people are seeking after God God is

  51. going to meet them in their seeking as a

  52. matter of fact it reminds me of what the

  53. Prophet Jeremiah wrote in his book in

  54. the Old Testament when he says if you

  55. seek God you will find God if you seek

  56. God with all your heart but there's a

  57. caveat there there there's an issue that

  58. we run into because we read in the word

  59. look at their life and say I've done

  60. nothing but good I've sought and pursued

  61. God in every point of my life I've

  62. always chosen Holiness over evil

  63. righteousness over my sin none of us in

  64. this room can say that

  65. so so how do we navigate that tension

  66. how how does the gospel build a bridge

  67. between Jeremiah declaring before the

  68. people of God if you seek God you'll

  69. find him and Paul in the New Testament

  70. saying but no one seeks after God here's

  71. where it is Jesus said this in John

    John 6:44

  72. 6:44 that everyone who the father

  73. draws he draws unto the son for

  74. salvation matter of fact Jesus will uh

  75. will also say it this way no one comes

  76. unto the father except through me and

  77. what that tells us is that God in his

  78. Sovereign will and his Sovereign purpose

  79. will draw you unto

  80. himself so that in your pursuing and in

  81. your seeking you might have an encounter

  82. of faith and turn from a life of

  83. wickedness so that your life would be

  84. transformed and never be the same this

  85. is where we find

  86. Cornelius he's on the precipice of

  87. salvation as a matter of fact Luke is

  88. going to tell us that he was in a

  89. position to hear from God and the reason

  90. he was in a position to hear from God is

  91. because he was living a devoted

  92. life he was so in tune with the Jewish

  93. faith and he had rejected the gods of

  94. his culture that he saw something in the

  95. god of Abraham Isaac and Jacob that was

  96. worth devotion at this point in the

  97. story Cornelius is not even a

  98. Christian he's not even been saved

  99. that'll come much later when God gives

  100. Peter a

  101. vision to go and preach the gospel to

  102. Cornelius but at this point we see

  103. Cornelius and Luke refers to him as a

  104. god-fearer we see him seeking after God

  105. and it's in his

  106. seeking that he's in a position to hear

  107. God so here's what I want to do this

  108. morning as we dive into our Passage I

  109. want to challenge you with the question

  110. are you seeking after God and are you in

  111. a position to hear from

  112. God and if you're not I pray that this

  113. morning would would serve as as a window

  114. of accountability into your life that

  115. whatever it is might be drawing you away

  116. from a life of pursuit a life of

  117. intentional obedience a life where you

  118. are positioned to hear from the god of

  119. creation

  120. speak to you to guide you to direct you

  121. to indwell your very life to indwell

  122. your marriage to indwell your parenting

  123. to indwell your work in every part of

  124. your

  125. life that you would be able to recognize

  126. those areas that you need to turn from

  127. and therefore be in a position to hear

  128. from God because here's the reality God

  129. isn't

  130. silent God still speaks today now he

  131. doesn't speak in a sense that he gives

  132. us new revelation

  133. God's revelation to humanity to the

  134. World closed at the end of this book at

  135. the end of Revelation everything we ever

  136. need to know about God has been spoken

  137. to us one in his son Jesus Christ two in

  138. his written word from Genesis to

  139. Revelation everything in between this is

  140. God's word and everything that we need

  141. to know about our King our Lord and our

  142. savior is right here so when we talk

  143. about God speaking to you here's here's

  144. what we mean

  145. we mean you being so in tune with the

  146. god with the god of creation and so

  147. indwelt by the power of the holy spirit

  148. that you're able to discern the voice of

  149. God in your

  150. life to hold you accountable to convict

  151. you to show you his will his plan and

  152. his

  153. purpose you know the reality is there

  154. are so many voices that speak into our

  155. life that pull us every which way that

  156. want us to believe one thing over the

  157. other but there's really only one voice

  158. One Voice of Truth that we should abide

  159. by that we should cling to that we

  160. should listen to and that's the voice of

  161. God so Cornelius this man of authority

  162. this man of wealth of opulence and

  163. influence we find that he's hungry for

  164. the Lord he's what Luke calls godfear

  165. he's actively pursuing god so let's read

  166. his story beginning in verse one Acts

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  167. chapter

  168. 10 at

  169. cesaria there was a man named

  170. Cornelius a centurion of what was known

  171. as the Italian cohort verse two a devout

  172. man who feared God this is key we're

  173. going to come back to this here in just

  174. a moment with all his household let me

  175. just hit the pause button there because

  176. this is

  177. incredible Cornelius was so devout and

  178. he's not even a believer yet but in his

  179. Pursuit in seeking of Truth he was so

  180. devout so committed so hungry for it

  181. that it overflowed from his life did you

  182. catch this here in verse two what Luke

  183. is telling us that this man Cornelius

  184. was devout he feared god with what with

  185. all his

  186. household here's here's my prayer for us

  187. here's the prayer for myself remember

  188. when I preach I'm preaching to myself

  189. when I'm studying the Lord's convicting

  190. me and holding me accountable and and

  191. and and everything that that overflows

  192. from the stage on Sunday Morning has

  193. been built up with wrestling and tension

  194. in my heart and in my life throughout

  195. the week and so I ask myself as I read

  196. about this devout man who feared God and

  197. was so devoted and so God-fearing that

  198. his whole household recognized it and I

  199. began to ask myself am I so

  200. devout and so in awe and live in

  201. reverence to the god of creation ation

  202. that that it overflows in my life that

  203. my wife recognizes it that my kids

  204. recognize it that my church recognizes

  205. it Dad can that be said of you me talk

  206. to the men in the room for just a moment

  207. can that be said of

  208. you are you so

  209. devout and live in awe and reverence and

  210. and and and you have a healthy fear of

  211. God we'll talk about here that in just a

  212. moment that your household recognizes it

  213. here's one of the problems with with

  214. families in America today there is a

  215. lack of Godly men who

  216. lead and I would bargain to say that

  217. that that most of not all the men in

  218. here we mean well we have a desire to

  219. lead our families well by virtue of you

  220. being here that is my

  221. assumption I pray that that would

  222. overflow into how you worship at home

  223. and how you lead your family in prayer

  224. at home and how you show them what it

  225. means to be in love with God's word at

  226. home none of us are perfect none of us

  227. have it all right right none of us have

  228. it all together but we can pursue the

  229. Lord with a healthy

  230. fear with a healthy devotion that it

  231. overflows into the rest of our household

  232. let me

  233. continue so he was a devout man who

  234. feared God with all his household he

  235. gave arms generously to the people and

  236. prayed continually to God

  237. here's here's what I recognize remember

  238. is Cornelius a Believer yet no and he is

  239. acting more Christian than some of the

  240. Christians

  241. today he's acting more Christian than

  242. the religious people of Jesus's

  243. Day verse three about the ninth hour of

  244. the day he saw clearly a vision in a

  245. vision an angel of God come in and say

  246. to him

  247. Cornelius he stared at him in Terror and

  248. said what is it Lord and he said to him

  249. your prayers and your arms have ascended

  250. as a

  251. memorial before God here's what we need

  252. to

  253. know the pursuit of God through the life

  254. and the actions of Cornelius move the

  255. heart of

  256. God what we say what we do by virtue of

  257. how we live our life in obedience to the

  258. commands of the Lord they move the heart

  259. of God and the angel declares to

  260. Cornelius it's a memorial before

  261. God God

  262. recognizes what you're doing let's

  263. continue verse five now send men to japa

  264. and bring one Simon who is called Peter

  265. he is lodging with one Simon a Tanner

  266. whose house is by the Sea when the angel

  267. who spoke spoke to him had departed he

  268. called two of his servants and a devout

  269. soldier from among those who attended

  270. him and having related everything to

  271. them he sent them to japa know what

  272. God's people said amen Lord would you

  273. bless your word Holy Spirit would you

  274. stir our

  275. hearts couple of things I want us to

  276. recognize this morning and here's and I

  277. want to posit three questions to us

  278. that I want to challenge you to

  279. prayerfully consider the

  280. answers so that we would all be in a

  281. position to hear from God that our lives

  282. our marriage our family that everything

  283. about us would would have God Central to

  284. our devotion to our thoughts and to our

  285. actions so that no matter what takes

  286. place in our life we can discern the

  287. voice of God over the voice of the world

  288. we can discern The Voice of Truth truth

  289. over the lies that are attempting to rob

  290. steal kill and destroy devotion

  291. fellowship and outright worship before

  292. the Lord but here's here I want to PR

  293. you for just a moment remember Cornelius

  294. is not a Believer yet and yet he is

  295. seeking after God he's pursuing God God

  296. is drawing Cornelius to himself and and

  297. here's what we'll learn not just here in

  298. our passage but really throughout the

  299. rest of Acts chapter 10 here's what we

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  300. learn is it good deeds don't make you

  301. right right with

  302. God Cornelius was devout but he wasn't

  303. saved Cornelius feared God but he still

  304. needed the

  305. gospel and I think so often so many of

  306. us we think because we're doing

  307. everything right because we can mark the

  308. boxes on our checklist of what it means

  309. to go to church of what it means to pay

  310. ties and offerings of what it means to

  311. memorize Bible scriptures of what it

  312. means to be a part of our Bible reading

  313. plan this year that we can do all these

  314. things but here's the question is your

  315. heart in a position to hear from

  316. God there's a moment several moments

  317. actually throughout the life and

  318. Ministry of Jesus where he encounters a

  319. religious body of individuals we know

  320. them they're called the

  321. Pharisees the Pharisees were a people

  322. that did everything

  323. right if you had to judge whether

  324. someone knew the Lord or not based

  325. solely on the answers to by questions

  326. and all things Christianity the

  327. Pharisees they're acing that test every

  328. single time but do you remember what

  329. Jesus told them says you're whitewashed

  330. tombs you're SE you're Children of the

  331. devil you're you're seeds of Satan you

  332. look good on the outside but you're

  333. corrupt you're rotten you're dead your

  334. faith is non-existent on the inside turn

  335. from your

  336. wickedness before Abraham was I am the

  337. very thing that you desire is here right

  338. in front of you and they murder Jesus

  339. for

  340. that for

  341. accountability So Good Deeds don't save

  342. you we'll talk about this here towards

  343. the end of our message Good Deeds need

  344. to be the Overflow of a faith that is

  345. ever present in your life good deeds

  346. need to be the outworking of your

  347. salvation not a means to your salvation

  348. so so here's what I want to do as we go

  349. back through the rest of our passage I

  350. want to look at three questions three

  351. questions that I want us to prayerfully

  352. consider so that we can ascertain if we

  353. are in a position to hear from God I

  354. want to hear from God I want you to hear

  355. from God I think these questions are

  356. going to be helpful if you're taking

  357. notes here's the first one are you

  358. hungry for the Lord do you have a hunger

  359. that stirs you an ache in your belly in

  360. your gut in your spirit that desires

  361. more here's the thing every single one

  362. of us has a hunger the question is not

  363. are you hungry the question is are you

  364. hungry for God because here's what we do

  365. with that hunger we attempt to satisfy

  366. and appease that hunger with the things

  367. of this world which is why many of us

  368. are living in sin we're living in sin

  369. because there is this desperate attempt

  370. to find satisfaction for the Hunger we

  371. all have Solomon talked about this

  372. hunger in the book The Book of

  373. Ecclesiastes here's what he said God has

  374. placed eternity in the heart of man in

  375. another words Solomon recognized a

  376. couple of things number one he

  377. recognized that God was in control of

  378. everything if you've never read the book

  379. of Ecclesiastes it's quite eye openening

  380. because here's what Solomon says he'll

  381. say hey if your heart desires to enjoy

  382. the things of this world to have fun to

  383. live your best life now if you desire

  384. all those things go on and do it live it

  385. up Embrace everything your eye wants

  386. everything your heart lusts after do it

  387. but know this you will be judged for

  388. it now remember this is a man who was

  389. the wealthiest man the world has ever

  390. known he was the wisest man the world

  391. has ever known and I'll tell you why

  392. because what conclusion does he come to

  393. despite his opulence despite his wealth

  394. despite his influence despite the fact

  395. that he could have anything in anyone at

  396. his command he says it's all for not

  397. it's vanity it's worthless it's chasing

  398. after the wind it doesn't satisfy the

  399. Deep longing and hunger we all have is

  400. your heart devoted to the Lord so

  401. Cornelius is seeking after God and he's

  402. seeking after God through

  403. devotion he had recognized that there

  404. was something to the god of the

  405. Israelites that did not match up to the

  406. gods of his

  407. culture or to the things that he was

  408. raised in and so what does he do he

  409. begins to seek after the god of Abraham

  410. Isaac and Jacob go back with me to verse

  411. two Luke writes that Cornelius was a

  412. devout man who feared God with all his

  413. household gave arms gen generously to

  414. the people and prayed

  415. continually so according to the

  416. scriptures what is

  417. devotion a devotion is a healthy fear of

  418. God a devotion is giving generously and

  419. devotion is

  420. praying often this was the life of

  421. devotion that embodied Cornelius there

  422. was a spiritual hunger that he felt and

  423. it's one that we all

  424. feel you have it I have it how are we

  425. satisfied and appeasing that hunger CU

  426. often times we devote ourselves to

  427. fruitless and worldly

  428. attempts if I'm hungry I go to my fridge

  429. I go to my pantry or I'll go to the

  430. store and I'll get something to satisfy

  431. my

  432. Hunger I don't go outside and start

  433. doing

  434. chores I don't do anything else that

  435. wouldn't appease the hunger that exists

  436. in me and yet so often why do we do that

  437. in our own life when we're spiritually

  438. hungry and we know the one who will

  439. appease that hunger the one who will

  440. satisfy the desire in our hearts and in

  441. our soul and yet we attempt to fill it

  442. with

  443. worldliness are you seeking God in a way

  444. that positions you to hear from God

  445. and the thing is I think we've all

  446. experienced this we want God to speak to

  447. us we desire God to speak to us whe

  448. whether that's we are approaching a fork

  449. in the

  450. road in some moment or area in our life

  451. or we're looking for direction in terms

  452. of what decision or choice we are to

  453. make next we want God to speak but but

  454. here's the thing we don't make time to

  455. seek Him

  456. daily we don't linger in that hunger we

  457. we don't sit and wrestle with the fact

  458. that I need to be disciplined enough to

  459. pursue God and position myself to hear

  460. from him you know the psalmist says this

  461. be still and know that I am God there's

  462. something in our seeking where that

  463. creates a Stillness in our life where we

  464. back away from the distractions when

  465. when when we get away from everything

  466. that would be distracting to us so that

  467. we can be in a position to hear from God

  468. this is what devotion does this is where

  469. Cornelius finds himself through his

  470. prayers through his generosity and his

  471. reverence for God these are all

  472. responses to a deep hunger that rests in

  473. him so a couple of things one make

  474. seeking God a daily

  475. habit kind of survey your life this past

  476. week this past month

  477. what has your Pursuit Of God look like

  478. daily it look differently for each of us

  479. some of us our early risers that's when

  480. we seek the Lord

  481. intentionally some of us are nights

  482. that's when we seek the Lord

  483. intentionally some of us are truly

  484. living out Paul's command in

  485. Thessalonians pray without ceasing and

  486. so throughout the entire day there's

  487. this under breath prayer of seeking the

  488. Lord and fulfilling that hunger with the

  489. things of God the point is what does

  490. that look like for

  491. you are you intentionally seeking God

  492. daily that's the first thing the second

  493. thing we need to do is create space to

  494. just sit and

  495. listen void of

  496. distraction and to just press into the

  497. Lord so that's the first question are

  498. you hungry for God here's the second

  499. question do you

  500. fear

  501. God that word fear fear is connected to

  502. the Greek word INF

  503. Phobos and in Phobos talks about a

  504. reverence an awe often times when we

  505. hear the word fear in western

  506. civilization we think of a fear that

  507. causes you to draw back but that's not

  508. the fear that scripture talks about and

  509. we see this pattern just consistent all

  510. throughout Moses when he confronted with

  511. God in the form of a burning bush says

  512. that he was terrified

  513. but it was a fear that Drew him in it

  514. didn't draw him back when Isaiah is

  515. confronted with the Throne of God he

  516. says woe is me because he recognizes his

  517. own sinfulness but he didn't draw back

  518. it drew him

  519. in when we talk about a healthy fear of

  520. God we're talking about not approaching

  521. God

  522. casually and I think one of the reasons

  523. that that we're not in a position to

  524. hear from God is because we have this

  525. casual relationship with the

  526. Lord and and here's the tension right

  527. because God indeed is our friend there's

  528. that language that is used in Scripture

  529. that Jesus is a friend of sinners and

  530. because we are blessed to live modern

  531. culture and Western Civilization we we

  532. often will approach our relationship

  533. with Christ as this casual friendship

  534. nothing wrong with it except the fact

  535. that he's not just our friend he's our

  536. King he is our Sovereign Lord who

  537. demands our

  538. worship and if we refuse it if the

  539. people of God refuse to worship and R

  540. him and stand in awe of him our worship

  541. will come from another as a matter of

  542. fact it's phrased this way that the

  543. rocks will cry out in our

  544. place because there is something that

  545. God demand Dems from us and it is a

  546. reverence and a fear that doesn't mean

  547. that God isn't our friend or that we

  548. can't be real open and transparent but

  549. this casual

  550. relationship must never be

  551. approach without understanding that our

  552. God is Holy that he is a king that it is

  553. he who summons us not we who summon him

  554. do you have a healthy fear of God go

  555. back with me verses 3 and 4 in our

  556. passage about the 9th hour of the

  557. day he saw clearly in a vision an angel

  558. of God come in and say to him

  559. Cornelius and he stared at him in what

  560. in

  561. Terror Luke's referring to Cornelius as

  562. a god-fearer Luke records this moment

  563. when he has an encounter cter with the

  564. Divine and he's terrorized but watch

  565. this the terror doesn't call him doesn't

  566. push him away from the Lord what does it

  567. do it draws him in why because it's in

  568. Phobos it's a healthy fear it's a

  569. reverence it's an all and what does he

  570. say he says what is it

  571. Lord I'm at your

  572. command I'm here I I I know enough of

  573. the god of Abraham Isaac and Jacob to

  574. understand the purpose of prayer to

  575. to understand the purpose of giving

  576. generously in this Divine encounter I'm

  577. at your

  578. command God's our friend but he's also

  579. our King this unique type of fear draws

  580. us closer to God not

  581. further so this isn't a a Casual Fear

  582. it's understanding the weight of holy

  583. moments

  584. and being so in tune with with what God

  585. desires that that we are in a position

  586. to clearly discern his voice in our life

  587. church do you have fear of

  588. God do you see him as king of creation

  589. and all these encounters throughout the

  590. scripture they lead to worship to

  591. something more to something greater to

  592. something far better than this world can

  593. offer do fear the lord are you devoted

  594. to the Lord encounters with God watch

  595. this encounters with God are never

  596. casual they're

  597. holy and the reason they are holy

  598. because God is magnified God is

  599. glorified when we stand in

  600. sing We don't stand in sing for the sake

  601. of just lifting voices and sounding well

  602. but we stand and sing because there's a

  603. greater purpose behind it you I pray are

  604. not sitting and listening because that's

  605. just what you're supposed to do in

  606. American Christianity but because you

  607. have a greater and deeper desire to know

  608. God

  609. more do you fear the

  610. Lord scripture says that when he started

  611. at him in Terror he asked what is it

  612. Lord and how how did the angel respond

  613. your prayer

  614. and your arms have ascended as a

  615. memorial before the Lord listen if we

  616. lack a healthy fear of

  617. God then our life will lack faithfulness

  618. to God so what do we do couple of things

  619. one approach him with

  620. humility understand that yes he indeed

  621. is our friend but he is also our

  622. king and the reason we can approach our

  623. King as our friend is Hebrew declares

  624. because of Jesus don't ever take that

  625. moment or that truth lightly don't take

  626. his presence lightly here's the last

  627. question here's the one I really want to

  628. press into we have enough time this is

  629. going to get convicting will you obey

  630. God will you not just fear Him will you

  631. not just have a Devotion to him but will

  632. you obey him

  633. listen obedience is a necessity in the

  634. life of a

  635. Christian we have done a disservice the

  636. American church has done a disservice to

  637. the truth of the gospel because we have

  638. separated Christianity from obedience in

  639. the scriptures they're not separated in

  640. the Scriptures it is assumed that if you

  641. have faith in Jesus then you are being

  642. obedient to Jesus this is why James the

  643. brother of Christ will tell us in his

  644. letter that faith without works is dead

  645. it's not that

  646. works are a means to

  647. salvation but rather Works obedience is

  648. a product of your salvation faith and

  649. obedience are tied together we've

  650. separated them this far removed from the

  651. scriptures but when you look at the

  652. truth of God's word if you're a Christ

  653. Christian you're walking in obedience so

  654. here's where it creates ATT tension

  655. because we all go through Seasons where

  656. we we are running from God we all go

  657. through Seasons where we're living in

  658. Disobedience to God but here's here's

  659. where it creates a struggle all right

  660. I'm I'm going to give you a subject to

  661. have some good conversation over your

  662. lunch this

  663. afternoon

  664. biblically if you are not walking in

  665. obedience to the Lord your faith is

  666. called into question

  667. question if the outworking of what you

  668. profess with your lips is not indicative

  669. of obedience to the truth of the Gospel

  670. your faith is called into question this

  671. is this is why Paul holds churches

  672. accountable in his 13

  673. letters this is why the church in

  674. galatia is like Paul giving them jab

  675. after jab uppercut after uppercut

  676. because he's bringing to the C Sur this

  677. deep-seated Rebellion or this

  678. deep-seated lack of obedience this is

  679. why he wrote to the Corinthian Church to

  680. let them know you lack in

  681. obedience and it's not that we would

  682. approach obedience through a legalistic

  683. mindset like the Pharisees and this is

  684. where the tension

  685. exists because how can I live a life of

  686. obedience I know I need to live life a

  687. life of obedience but I don't want my

  688. motive for obedience to be be one of

  689. trying to gain God's

  690. approval because God approves of you son

  691. and daughter of the most high not

  692. because of your obedience or lack of but

  693. because of what Jesus has accomplished

  694. through his life death and Resurrection

  695. that's the

  696. tension so then if that's the case what

  697. role does obedience Play here's what it

  698. plays that you recognize what devotion

  699. means that you recognize that you can't

  700. just live a casual relationship with God

  701. but he indeed is King and he demands

  702. obedience he demands Holiness therefore

  703. if I have faith in him I live a a I live

  704. an obedient

  705. life not because I have to but because I

  706. want

  707. to you see the

  708. difference Cornelius didn't have to live

  709. an obedient

  710. life he was in a position of well Fame

  711. leadership and

  712. opulence and he could have lived far

  713. from the Lord and yet he chose to

  714. pursue the

  715. Lord I want us to notice here that

  716. Cornelius doesn't hesitate to the

  717. commands of God again it's not legalism

  718. it's the outworking of Faith let's

  719. finish this let me go back to verse

  720. 7even when the angel who spoke to him

  721. had departed he called two of his

  722. servants and a devout Soldier so are we

  723. recognizing a pattern here in the life

  724. of

  725. Cornelius and Cornelius is here and just

  726. a couple of verses is going to get saved

  727. him and his whole household they're

  728. going to be baptized in the Holy Spirit

  729. and it's going to open the doorway into

  730. the Gentile world to all the non-jewish

  731. people to receive the Gospel here's a

  732. tid uh tidbit of information this this

  733. is taking place right now in

  734. cesaria where is Peter in japa which is

  735. about 30 miles if you recognize uh the

  736. map I had a map then I erase it I didn't

  737. think I would reference it but if if if

  738. you know the map of of ancient Israel so

  739. so you had cesaria up here you had japa

  740. down here and then you had Jerusalem

  741. over here and so you you can begin to

  742. see the outworking of the Great

  743. Commission and acts 18 beginning uh

  744. Jerusalem Judea Samaria and then to the

  745. ends of the Earth Peter is preaching the

  746. gospel in japa japa is a port city he's

  747. now gonna go and meet Cornelius in

  748. cesaria cesaria was the headquarters for

  749. the Roman occupation of Israel that was

  750. a port city so now you have people being

  751. saved becoming Christian Gentiles in

  752. these port cities who now have access to

  753. trade people coming down from Africa

  754. Egypt Alexandria people coming from

  755. Italy Turkey

  756. Greece other areas of the Roman World

  757. crossing the Mediterranean hearing the

  758. gospel then taking the gospel across the

  759. Mediterranean this is how the gospel got

  760. to places like Europe this is how the

  761. gospel got to places uh deep in South

  762. Africa it all starts here with Cornelius

  763. being in a position to hear from God

  764. through devotion through a healthy fear

  765. and through

  766. obedience and too

  767. often we hear

  768. God but we don't act we we don't move we

  769. we

  770. wait I mean here's here's a moment of

  771. accountability for me as

  772. well we all hear God through

  773. this and yet we don't move and and we

  774. don't act and we we don't obey God

  775. says go

  776. apologize go ask for forgiveness and we

  777. wait God tells us step out in faith

  778. trust me believe in me and then we begin

  779. to analyze all the details I don't know

  780. how this is going to work out or God

  781. says you need to surrender that sin I'm

  782. talking to some of us this morning you

  783. need to surrender that

  784. sin and we take a step

  785. back and there's a lack of obedience in

  786. our life because we're too in love with

  787. the

  788. sin in our

  789. life there's only

  790. one one thing sin

  791. accomplishes and that is the death of

  792. your

  793. soul that is to pull you further and

  794. further away from the Lord but Jesus

  795. comes on the

  796. scene invites you into something greater

  797. invites you in to something better and

  798. by virtue of where we live by virtue of

  799. the culture that we live in most of us

  800. if not all of us we know myself included

  801. what areas of our life we need to repent

  802. from and we

  803. don't because we are too in love with

  804. our sin more than We Love Our Savior and

  805. maybe just maybe you think one day one

  806. day I'll turn from that sin when I start

  807. to have the strength when I start to

  808. feel like it I'll turn from my sin

  809. here's the truth you never

  810. will because your sin wages war against

  811. your

  812. flesh and unless you submit to the

  813. indwelling power of the Holy Spirit

  814. that's a losing battle every time this

  815. is why Paul will tell the Corinthians I

  816. beat my flesh into submission there are

  817. moments there are days where I have to

  818. remind myself I am greater than the

  819. Flesh and the sin that is attempting to

  820. creep back into the

  821. surface the sin nature that we have the

  822. sin that we battle with that is

  823. something that we will deal with until

  824. the day Christ

  825. returns praise God that through his life

  826. death and Resurrection we are saved from

  827. the penalty penalty of sin as a Believer

  828. as a son as a child of God I do not have

  829. to fear separation from him because of

  830. my savior Jesus

  831. Christ and so he has saved me from the

  832. penalty of sin right now I am actively

  833. being saved from the power of sin there

  834. is a war that wages inside every one of

  835. us Paul tells us in Galatians it's the

  836. war between your flesh your sin nature

  837. and the spirit of God that dwells in you

  838. who's going to win that

  839. battle amen praise the

  840. Lord God

  841. is but listen that battle that battle is

  842. won in your obedience and

  843. submission to what the spirit

  844. provides this is why it takes discipline

  845. this is why if you remember last week I

  846. said Christianity is going to be the

  847. hardest thing that you will ever

  848. do because it is putting to death the

  849. flesh it is crucifying what I want want

  850. it is crucifying the things that I

  851. desire and often times that are contrary

  852. and in Rebellion to the god of creation

  853. so let's just take a moment just right

  854. now let's just take a

  855. moment just search your

  856. heart and just ask yourself what what is

  857. it what's sin in my life am I clinging

  858. to am I holding on to that I just need

  859. to release this morning that I just need

  860. to to let go so that I can obey God so

  861. that I can be in a position to hear him

  862. dad so that we can be in a position to

  863. lead our families and love our wives

  864. kids so that you can be in a position to

  865. obey and honor your parents and to be a

  866. a Shining Light in the hallways of your

  867. classroom what is it in your life that

  868. you need to let go and maybe when you

  869. think of sin right I want to bring some

  870. clarification here maybe when you think

  871. of sin you're thinking of something

  872. major you think well you know roling I

  873. don't have substance abuse I'm not

  874. addicted to anything I'm not looking at

  875. pornography I'm I'm not committing

  876. adultery like I'm I'm overall pretty

  877. good that's your attitude that's a sin

  878. of

  879. Pride and that's a sin that you need to

  880. take before the Lord maybe it's over

  881. consumption which is a sin we all need

  882. to repent

  883. from over consuming things it is okay to

  884. enjoy and consume things but never at

  885. the risk of consuming the Lord

  886. of consuming his truth so so just for a

  887. moment let's just search Our

  888. Hearts Let's seek the

  889. Lord let's stop hesitating stop

  890. analyzing stop ignoring and let's just

  891. be obedient just right now search your

  892. hearts ask the spirit to reveal to you

  893. what it is that you need to turn over to

  894. the Lord and turn

  895. from in your life

  896. you know Cornelius didn't stumble into

  897. obedience

  898. it took

  899. discipline and it takes

  900. intentionality on our part maybe this

  901. morning God is calling some of you to

  902. Salvation maybe God is calling some of

  903. you into

  904. Ministry maybe God is

  905. calling some of you to lay down whatever

  906. sin Vice is burdening you stop

  907. hesitating when God speaks move

  908. let me close let me read you something I

  909. thought was really

  910. neat by paraphrasing it I won't do it

  911. justice so let me just read it to

  912. you some of you want to hear God's voice

  913. but you are not seeking him

  914. daily some of you have become casual in

  915. his presence he is Holy and you must

  916. approach him with

  917. all some of you have heard from God but

  918. you haven't obeyed it's time to act

  919. let's pray
