  1. If you have your Bible or an app, let's

  2. open it up. We're going to be in the

  3. book of Acts this morning. Acts 12. I

  4. believe we are in week 38 of a series we

  5. began last year where we are looking at

  6. how God moved and how God worked through

  7. the early church after the day of

  8. Pentecost. And the reason we are taking

  9. uh several months and several weeks to

  10. look at the story of Acts because Acts

  11. is our story. Their history is our

  12. history. Their mission is our mission.

  13. And I'm reminded of this every single

  14. week that there is no official

  15. conclusion to the book of Acts. And

  16. Luke, who is the author of this book,

  17. did that purposefully so that we would

  18. understand that the work God began and

  19. what the spirit began to cultivate in

  20. the early church then, God continues to

  21. work. And the spirit continues to

  22. cultivate today. And he does it through

  23. you. and he does it through me. We have

  24. the incredible honor and the amazing

  25. privilege to be a part of what God is

  26. doing throughout his creation as he

  27. works towards rescue, redemption, and

  28. restoration. And God is calling a people

  29. who will live obediently to all that he

  30. has commanded in our lives. This is the

  31. story of Acts. And Acts continues to be

  32. our story as well. So, we're going to be

  33. in verses 1-5 right here in Acts 12. Let

  34. me kind of give you a setup and some

  35. context so you know that where we are

  36. going. We have just finished reading

  37. about an outpouring of the Holy Spirit

  38. upon the gentile people. We've also

  39. learned that in the city of Antioch,

  40. which is several hundred miles north of

  41. Jerusalem, God is doing an amazing work.

  42. The church is growing. People are being

  43. discipled. It is evident that the Holy

  44. Spirit is moving and working through a

  45. people who are committed to the mission

  46. of the gospel. And then we come to Acts

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  47. chapter 12. And what we find that is

  48. really thematic and prevalent all

  49. throughout the scriptures is that when

  50. the church continues to thrive, when the

  51. church continues to reach unknown

  52. regions and unknown people, there is

  53. always opposition and persecution that

  54. is set against the mission of God and

  55. the people of God. As a matter of fact,

  56. we come to a time period right here in

  57. Acts 12 where the Christians in

  58. Jerusalem are facing deep persecution

  59. and

  60. opposition, death at the hands of Herod

  61. Agrippa, arrests, trials, and all of

  62. this done not because Herod desires any

  63. sort of of fame, but because he is

  64. thriving in the persecution that he's

  65. bringing to believers because it pleases

  66. the

  67. Jews. Matter of fact, Acts chapter 12

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  68. shows us three scenes. We're going to

  69. look at scene one this morning. And

  70. we're going to look that when the church

  71. endures a difficult season, what they do

  72. is they don't run from it and panic.

  73. They don't run from it confused, but

  74. rather they step into what God is doing.

  75. and they do it through

  76. prayer. I was reminded this past week of

  77. a book called The Hiding Place written

  78. by Corey Tinboom. Many of you have read

  79. her work before. And and and there in

  80. chapter 13, she writes about a moment in

  81. this conversation that she has with her

  82. sister. They're at a concentration camp

  83. when she's recounting this memory. and

  84. they've endured suffering and

  85. persecution at the hands of Nazi

  86. generals and soldiers. And she shares

  87. this in that book. She says, "There is

  88. no pit so deep that God's love is not

  89. deeper still." Many of you have heard

  90. that quote before. And as I began to

  91. reflect on that, I began to think, how

  92. can someone in a moment of deep despair,

  93. pain, and suffering immediately turn and

  94. gauge their focus on the Lord. That only

  95. happens when a heart understands that

  96. God is moving and God is working. that

  97. despite opposition, despite the

  98. persecution that comes our way, that

  99. comes uh to the church across the world,

  100. what we find is that when a heart is set

  101. on Jesus, when a heart is set on his

  102. mission, that come what may, God still

  103. gets the glory. And no matter what we

  104. endure, our faith is never shaken. So,

  105. what I want to talk about today is how

  106. do we become a people that turn to

  107. prayer over panic?

  108. How do we become a people who look to

  109. what is happening in our midst is

  110. happening in the world around us within

  111. the church, outside of the church,

  112. within culture and society and

  113. immediately our first step is towards

  114. prayer and not panic. I believe Acts

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  115. chapter 12 shows us a scene on how we

  116. can adopt such an attitude. So if you

  117. have your Bibles, we'll begin in verse

  118. one. We'll read through verse 5. It'll

  119. be up on the screen as well. Here is

  120. what Dr. Luke writes.

  121. About that

  122. time, Herod the king laid violent hands

  123. on some who belonged to the church.

  124. Herod is striking

  125. Christians. He is targeting them. Verse

  126. two says, "He killed James, the brother

  127. of John, with the sword." Luke isn't

  128. mincing words here. And if we're not

  129. careful, we can miss the horrendous

  130. nature of this persecution that is set

  131. against the early church in Acts chap

  132. 12. But what Luke is doing and the words

  133. that he is using, the laying of hands on

  134. those who belong to the church and the

  135. killing of James who was a disciple of

  136. Jesus, mind you, the killing of James

  137. with the sword is to communicate to us,

  138. especially this far removed, that this

  139. was evil. That what was taking place

  140. against the church was horrendous and

  141. despicable. Blood was being shed at the

  142. hands of Herod so that the gospel would

  143. be silenced and the mission of God would

  144. seize. Verse three is the key

  145. here. And when he saw that it pleased

  146. the

  147. Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also.

  148. This was during the days of unleavened

  149. bread. I think Luke is is also drawing

  150. our attention to something something

  151. incredible here. When did Jesus give his

  152. life? Was during the days of unleven

  153. bread. It was during the

  154. Passover. And here we have the

  155. persecution of the church. The

  156. opposition against the work of God

  157. taking place on a sacred holiday. A

  158. holiday that we we'll come to clarify

  159. here in just a moment as we participate

  160. in the Lord's supper that points to

  161. Jesus, the true lamb of God who comes to

  162. take away the sins of the world. But I'm

  163. getting ahead of myself, but but I don't

  164. want us to miss this. Where Herod

  165. attempted to silence the work of God and

  166. the hands and the feet and the movement

  167. of his church, what we find is that it

  168. only embolded them to thrive all the

  169. more. And so a challenging question for

  170. us is what do we do when we face moments

  171. that are difficult for

  172. us even this far removed from what is

  173. happening in Acts 12. Did you know

  174. Christians around the world still face

  175. this sort of persecution?

  176. There was news not too long ago of a

  177. coup that happened in Syria and they

  178. started going doortodoor pulling

  179. Christians out from their homes and

  180. beheading them in the middle of the

  181. streets taking them to the city square

  182. and executing them to silence the work

  183. of God. This is a horrendous moment in

  184. the life of the church. Verse four. And

  185. when he had seized him, he put him in

  186. prison, delivering him over to four

  187. squads of soldiers to guard him,

  188. intending after the Passover to bring

  189. him out to the people. Verse 5. So Peter

  190. was kept in prison,

  191. but earnest prayer for him was made to

  192. God by the church. And all God's people

  193. said, "Amen." Lord, would you bless your

  194. word? Holy Spirit, would you stir our

  195. hearts this morning?

  196. So, a couple of things I want us to

  197. recognize as we dive into this passage.

  198. First, and you may have picked up on

  199. this, Luke shares these five verses and

  200. all that is taking place in terms of

  201. opposition and persecution to the church

  202. sandwiched between

  203. what? The identity of the church, the

  204. life of the church, and the prayer

  205. movement of the church. Did you pick up

  206. on that in verse one and in verse 5? All

  207. that takes place is sandwiched between a

  208. mention of the church. Here's here's

  209. what Luke is telling us that in between

  210. pain, in between persecution, in between

  211. opposition, the church continues to

  212. thrive. And what do we see is one of the

  213. main methods that allows the church to

  214. thrive in the midst of such evil actions

  215. and culture? We see that it's all

  216. anchored in prayer. And when you get

  217. down to the root of prayer, prayer is

  218. anchored in trust. It's anchored in

  219. faith. It's anchored in hope. So one of

  220. the questions that we need to ask

  221. ourselves is where is my faith? Where is

  222. my hope? Where is my trust? And it's

  223. very easy for those things to waver.

  224. It's very easy to put our faith, hope,

  225. and trust in everything and anything.

  226. But when a faith, hope, and trust is

  227. anchored in the Lord, that is evident in

  228. a prayer life, that is evident in a

  229. corporate gathering, that is evident in

  230. the disciplines that we apply and adapt

  231. to our daily lives. We can be a people

  232. that when opposition comes, we don't run

  233. in panic, but we run straight into the

  234. arms of Jesus, trusting that all things

  235. work for the glory of his name and the

  236. good of his people. Now, let me just

  237. kind of clarify this for just a moment.

  238. When we talk about all things working

  239. for the glory of God and the good of his

  240. people, that does not mean that life is

  241. easy, that life is perfect, or that God

  242. is the cause of the pain in your life.

  243. But in God's sovereign reign and

  244. sovereign rule, in his knowledge and his

  245. power and the fact that he knows and has

  246. positioned you for the path that is in

  247. front of you, God will use even the most

  248. horrendous and painful of moments to

  249. sanctify you and bring about his good

  250. purpose. Paul really outlines this

  251. rather well to the church in Rome when

  252. he talks about what it means to be a

  253. living and breathing sacrifice before

  254. the Lord. And in order to do that, it

  255. all goes back to what? To trust, to

  256. faith, to hope. Where are we being

  257. anchored? And Paul will say it this way

  258. in Romans chapter 12 that we are to be

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  259. transformed by the renewing of our what?

  260. Of our mind. Cuz did you know this? What

  261. enters the mind, if we're not careful,

  262. will get filtered into the

  263. heart. And out of the heart, guess what?

  264. The mouth speaks. The hand moves. The

  265. feet walk. What are we anchored in?

  266. Where are we placing our hope and our

  267. trust? So, so here's what I want to do

  268. with our remaining time. I want to look

  269. at three truths that we can draw from

  270. from our passage. three truths that the

  271. early church

  272. recognized, that they acknowledged, that

  273. they lived by so that when difficult

  274. times came into their life. And and let

  275. me just say this, difficult times will

  276. come into our lives, they were able to

  277. turn immediately to the Lord as a first

  278. response rather than a last resort. And

  279. I believe as we go back into our

  280. passage, these are truths that we can

  281. recognize as well so that we can all be

  282. in the best position to look to the Lord

  283. when times are difficult. If you're

  284. taking notes, here's the first one. When

  285. evil seems to be winning, don't lose

  286. heart.

  287. How many of us have ever been a in a

  288. prolonged season where it just seems

  289. that one issue led to another led to

  290. another led to another and what seemed

  291. to be something temporary turned out to

  292. be something months or maybe years long.

  293. And that comes in different shapes and

  294. forms for for some of

  295. us. It's just the nature of a fallen

  296. world. and not to devalue or to take

  297. away from the reality of what you may be

  298. facing. Sometimes it's just a hand that

  299. we've been

  300. dealt. And here's the important thing to

  301. recognize with the hand that you've been

  302. dealt.

  303. Time and time again when you look

  304. throughout the scriptures, what we find

  305. is that people who endured pain, people

  306. who endured suffering, and the church is

  307. enduring

  308. this, one of their greatest leaders has

  309. just been murdered at the hands of a

  310. psychotic

  311. king. Another one of their great leaders

  312. has just been imprisoned and they are

  313. waiting for him to be murdered at the

  314. hands of this psychotic

  315. king. And not to devalue what we go

  316. through, but but what we find again

  317. throughout the scriptures is that when

  318. people endure suffering, it's because

  319. God is showering them with greater

  320. grace. I know many of your stories and

  321. I've heard your personal testimonies of

  322. pain and hardship, the type of pain and

  323. hardship that you would not wish on your

  324. worst enemy. And I've also heard the

  325. story of God's glory being on display

  326. through it. on how when you press into

  327. the Lord and when you seek him and

  328. anchor your heart and your hope in him

  329. that that is where you discover a taste

  330. and see moment where you discover a

  331. sweetness and a flavor in your walk with

  332. Jesus that if not for trial pain and

  333. suffering you would miss out on. And I

  334. think if we all take some inventory in

  335. our life and we all have a spiritual gut

  336. check and look to moments, we can see

  337. where God will use those dire situations

  338. to draw us closer to

  339. him. You know this just as well as I do,

  340. and I really want to be clear with this.

  341. Following Jesus is not easy. Sure, we

  342. are blessed in Western culture,

  343. particularly in America, with rights and

  344. privileges that are not afforded to

  345. Christians and other parts of the world.

  346. Praise God for that. We don't devalue

  347. that. We don't take away from that. We

  348. don't neglect that. We step into that

  349. and we praise God for his goodness and

  350. his mercy. But even in the midst of that

  351. and in the fallen world that we live in,

  352. we still face hardships. And oftent

  353. times it can be very difficult to be a

  354. Christian. Case in point, some of you

  355. all this past week, it was very

  356. difficult to hold your tongue. It was

  357. very difficult not to think the thoughts

  358. that you were thinking. It was very

  359. difficult not to lash out in anger. Some

  360. of us this morning were holding on to

  361. bitterness. We're holding on to

  362. unforgiveness. We're still clinging to

  363. that sinful addiction because we think

  364. there's greater joy in that than a

  365. relationship with Jesus. It is hard

  366. being a Christian. It is difficult. But

  367. here's the

  368. key. When the world seems to be winning,

  369. we do not lose hope. Paul said it this

  370. way in his letter to the Thessalonians.

  371. He said, "I do not want you to be

  372. ignorant, brothers and sisters, of those

  373. who have passed before us." He uses the

  374. word fallen

  375. asleep. There were some in the church

  376. who thought that death was the end and

  377. that was it. Even if you profess faith

  378. in Jesus, even if you were used in

  379. gospel work and kingdom advancement,

  380. that death was the end. And Paul reminds

  381. them that there is hope beyond the grave

  382. for the believer, for the one that

  383. trusts in Jesus. The world may seem like

  384. it's winning, but don't lose heart. Go

  385. back with me to verse

  386. one. About that time, Herod the king

  387. laid violent hands on some who belong to

  388. the church. He killed James, the brother

  389. of John, with the sword. And when he saw

  390. that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded

  391. to arrest

  392. Peter. Herod, his moral compass, it

  393. wasn't

  394. scripture. It was to please

  395. people. If the majority of people liked

  396. it, if they approved of it, then he

  397. embraced it and stepped into it

  398. wholeheartedly. Here's the reality. That

  399. wasn't just a Herod thing. That's a

  400. common thing today. Unfortunately, it's

  401. a common thing that is infiltrated into

  402. the church today. Do you know there are

  403. Christians around the world, there are

  404. churches around the world that don't

  405. stand on moral

  406. clarity. They lack spine. They lack

  407. backbone when it comes to standing on

  408. the truth of God's word.

  409. And those are people that have lost

  410. hearts. Those are people that look at

  411. the world and they say, "They're

  412. winning. We might as well join the

  413. winning team." But it's a lack of

  414. understanding because if you know the

  415. truth of God's word, the ending has

  416. already been declared. The victory has

  417. already been established. And guess

  418. what? The victory is Christ's. The

  419. victory is for his people. We've said it

  420. this way so often. We don't fight for a

  421. victory. We fight from the platform of

  422. victory. Jesus has already taken the

  423. gold.

  424. He has established it and he has

  425. established it forever and

  426. ever. And so we need to be a people as

  427. we not lose heart despite what's

  428. happening in the world around us that we

  429. press against the flesh that desires to

  430. be

  431. self-focused because really it's all a

  432. powerless

  433. imitation. It's not the real thing.

  434. Christianity will cost

  435. you. Which is why Paul says in Galatians

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  436. chapter 2 20, I have been crucified with

  437. Christ. It is no longer I who live but

  438. Christ who lives in me. And the life

  439. that I live now, I live by faith in the

  440. son of God who loved me and gave his

  441. life for me. That word been, pastor uh

  442. pastor Eric talked about it last week.

  443. It's perfect

  444. tense meaning it includes both past,

  445. present and future. It's ongoing. We are

  446. constantly being crucified with Christ.

  447. What does that mean? That means you wake

  448. up in the morning and you tell the

  449. flesh. The flesh is not in

  450. charge. You tell the flesh that you are

  451. the one filled with the spirit, filled

  452. with his power, filled with his might.

  453. You are the one that dictates your day.

  454. Not your flesh. It's the spirit of God

  455. in you. This is what Christianity costs

  456. and it's cost the son his life. Luke

    Luke 9:62

  457. 9:62, "No one who puts his hand to the

  458. plow and looks back is fit for the

  459. kingdom of

  460. God." You know, Herod

  461. attempted to triumph with the

  462. sword. He attempted to use it as a tool

  463. to silence the church. Sure, he murdered

  464. James. He imprisoned Peter. But it did

  465. not stop the

  466. gospel. All he did was sharpen the

  467. church's focus. And here's here's my

  468. challenge to you. When the world seems

  469. to win, don't lose heart. Here's my

  470. challenge to you. When you step into

  471. opposition, when you step into pain,

  472. when you step into hardship, when you

  473. step into those seasons where it feels

  474. like your heart and soul is being ripped

  475. from you, I want to challenge you with

  476. this. I'm not saying it's easy. I know

  477. it's difficult, but I want to challenge

  478. you with this because it is still

  479. possible with the power of the Holy

  480. Spirit to use it not as an opportunity

  481. to flee from the Lord, but to press in

  482. and to sharpen your faith in him.

  483. Because a Christian with a sharpened

  484. faith is the enemy's worst

  485. nightmare. We step into the power that

  486. rests in the Lord. So when evil seems to

  487. be winning, don't lose heart. Here's the

  488. second thing. When the church has no

  489. power, it still has

  490. prayer. Many of us know this by heart.

  491. At this moment in history, Herod had the

  492. power. Herod had

  493. soldiers. There was a ton of them that

  494. surrounded Peter. Herod had the chains.

  495. He had the keys to the cell. It would

  496. seem that he is winning. But what did

  497. the church have? It's right here in

  498. verse

  499. 5. So Peter was kept in prison. No, not

  500. notice the phrasing here. Again, Luke

  501. doesn't mince words, right? And and

  502. every word in scripture is meant to draw

  503. us deeper into God's plan for our life.

  504. So, so Peter, if you picked up on this,

  505. he's painting this contrast, right? We

  506. see it at the end of Acts 12, the church

  507. is thriving. And about this time, he

  508. picks up in chapter uh chapter 12, about

  509. this time, persecution is happening. So,

  510. while the church thrives, persecution

  511. comes alongside it. uh opposition comes

  512. alongside it. But does it silence the

  513. church? No. I I think uh Acts 12:5 is a

    Acts 12:5

  514. clear indicator of that. Because while

  515. Peter was kept in prison, while he was

  516. chained in prison, while he was being

  517. guarded in prison, while he was being

  518. watched over in prison, all for the

  519. purpose of what? Keeping him where he

  520. is. So that there's no overflow. There's

  521. no breaking out. There's no moving

  522. forward. While Herod attempted to keep

  523. him in prison, what's happening to the

  524. church? They're moving forward. They're

  525. seeking the Lord in earnest prayer. And

  526. here's what I love about that word

  527. earnest prayer. It's rooted in the Greek

  528. word

  529. ectenos. It's where we would later get

  530. the word extend from. What this means is

  531. is this isn't just random prayer.

  532. The church is not just gathering and and

  533. praying for

  534. Peter's safekeeping prior to dinner. No,

  535. no. This is a word that indicates

  536. ferveny. A word that indicates it that

  537. we are extending our soul that that we

  538. are broken over this. That everything

  539. about us is extending away from self,

  540. away from the flesh, and into the power

  541. and presence of God. That's what this

  542. word indicates. Here's what's

  543. interesting. This is the same word for

  544. prayer that is used to describe how

  545. Jesus was praying in the garden of

  546. Gethsemane before his arrest. And what

  547. do we read there? That Jesus was so

  548. drawn to the

  549. father that that he was so extending

  550. himself in prayer. The scripture says

  551. that his sweat became like drops of

  552. blood. It's an actual medical

  553. condition. It's where you can extend

  554. yourself so much that the capillaries in

  555. your head burst and blood starts to drip

  556. from your pores. This is this is the

  557. type of prayer that Luke is describing.

  558. A stretched out continuous prayer. This

  559. isn't a prayer that's ritualistic. It's

  560. a prayer for rescue. Here's here's what

  561. the church was saying. Here's what the

  562. church was

  563. indicating. Herod may have the power. He

  564. may have the politics. He may have the

  565. plan. He may have everything that is set

  566. against us. But what do we have? We have

  567. access to the throne of God. Church,

  568. don't ever forget

  569. that. Culture may look one way. Society

  570. may look one way. Your bank account

  571. might say something. Your health might

  572. say something. What you're going through

  573. might say something. The culture around

  574. you might say something. But what do you

  575. have? You have access to the throne of

  576. God. That's what we

  577. have. And oftentimes we take it

  578. lightly. This is really a play on words.

  579. When the church has no power, it so has

  580. prayer. But in reality, the church has

  581. all the power. Do you know why? Because

  582. God is with us.

  583. So when the avalanche of

  584. suffering hits you and it hits your soul

  585. and it hits your heart, how do you

  586. respond? Do you

  587. fold? Do you

  588. panic? Do you become a keyboard warrior

  589. and post and complain about

  590. it? Or do you

  591. pursue? is your posture a posture of

  592. prayer before the Lord. Now I I'm I'm

  593. speaking out of conviction

  594. here. One of the

  595. dangers of being a Christian in Western

  596. civilization because of the honors and

  597. the privileges that we have, the rights

  598. that we have, and again, praise God for

  599. all of that, it is very easy for us to

  600. become idol in our

  601. faith. It's why Jesus says it it's it's

  602. more difficult uh for for a rich man to

  603. enter into the kingdom than it is for a

  604. camel to go through the eye of a needle.

  605. What picture was Jesus painting here? He

  606. was Jesus was was not saying anything

  607. against wealth other than if if the

  608. things in your life draw your focus away

  609. from the Lord, draw your heart and its

  610. motives and its intentions away from his

  611. kingdom work, then what you have done is

  612. you have positioned yourself to not

  613. experience God's best in his kingdom.

  614. You have positioned your heart far away

  615. from him. And if you're not careful,

  616. because many times it's the sin in our

  617. life if there is no active repentance

  618. because active repentance leads to what?

  619. Don't miss this. Active repentance leads

  620. to active

  621. [Music]

  622. obedience. I I I I know I stand on this

  623. so often, but it it's it's worth

  624. reminding us. Faith and

  625. obedience are not separated.

  626. Faith and obedience in the scripture are

  627. united. They go hand in hand. And to say

  628. you had faith in Jesus meant that you

  629. were being obedient to Jesus. To say

  630. that you were actively repent. And we're

  631. all actively repenting. We don't repent

  632. once because we all

  633. sin. None of us are immune to sin in our

  634. lives. We I I've always said it this

  635. way. We'll never be sinless this side of

  636. heaven.

  637. But we through active repentance and

  638. therefore active obedience, though we'll

  639. never be sinless, we can sin less. Are

  640. you tracking with that? The more we

  641. pursue the Lord, the less we're pursuing

  642. the world. And this is exactly what

  643. repentance is. Repentance is not just

  644. turning away from sin, but it's

  645. simultaneously turning away from sin and

  646. turning towards Jesus. So my heart's no

  647. longer devoted to the things of this

  648. world. It's now devoted to the kingdom

  649. of God, his plan, his purpose, and his

  650. power at

  651. work. So, the church

  652. has prayer. That is where power rests.

  653. It rests in the posture that we take

  654. before the Lord. Here's here's the last

  655. one. Earthly thrones do not threaten

  656. heaven's rule. This is what we need to

  657. understand. Earthly thrones don't

  658. threaten heaven's rule. Now, now I'm

  659. going to go here and I want you guys

  660. just to listen, right? Stay with

  661. me. This has never been more evident

  662. than when we enter into election

  663. seasons. We put so much energy in the

  664. governments and in the politics and in

  665. and and in the laws. And again, nothing

  666. wrong with that. Nothing wrong with

  667. that. as as as good citizens of this

  668. country, of this community, I believe

  669. part of our duty to move about in God's

  670. kingdom, for the advancement of of

  671. righteousness, not ours, but but his, is

  672. to actively be involved in those things

  673. for the motivation of God's kingdom, not

  674. the motivation of preferences. And so

  675. often we think when when elections don't

  676. go our way, when judgments don't go our

  677. way, then we feel that God's kingdom is

  678. threatened. But earthly thrones don't

  679. threaten heaven's rule. Let's go to

  680. verse

  681. four. And when he had seized him, he put

  682. him in prison, delivering him over to

  683. four squads of soldiers to guard him,

  684. intending after the Passover to bring

  685. him out to the people. This can get lost

  686. on us, but this is a big deal right

  687. here. What this pi picture Luke is

  688. painting, Herod has gone to great

  689. lengths to ensure that Peter is going to

  690. die. He's already killed James. And so

  691. what does Herod do? He puts him in

  692. prison and he delivers him over to not

  693. one but four squads of

  694. soldiers to guard him. Here's what Herod

  695. is doing. Herod is planning a spectacle.

  696. He's going to march Peter into the city

  697. square once Passover is done and he is

  698. going to murder him. Why? Because it's

  699. pleased the Jews. What have we

  700. discovered so far about this distinction

  701. between these religious laced Jewish

  702. individuals that look to preference and

  703. tradition more than they do the truth of

  704. God's word. Right? this dichotomy, this

  705. this this division that has taken place

  706. here is now Jew versus Gentile and even

  707. even the Jews who who approved of of the

  708. Gentiles, the traditional Jews don't

  709. approve of those

  710. Jews. And so Herod is trying to please

  711. them. So he plans this spectacle. He he

  712. wants to wait for the Passover to finish

  713. to please these religious leaders. But I

  714. think Herod forgets something

  715. here. He forgets that his power is

  716. temporary. That his throne is

  717. borrowed. That the sword, though in

  718. earthly eyes may seem powerful, there is

  719. a sword that's more

  720. powerful, the word of God. And this is

  721. the sword that we fight with. This is

  722. the sword that the scripture tells us at

  723. the end of days Jesus comes forth and

  724. enacts judgment with this

  725. sword. So worldly powers, earthly

  726. dominions, kingdoms, governments,

  727. nations have nothing when it's against

  728. the truth of God's word and his plan and

  729. his purpose for your life. How do we

  730. become a people who will pray rather

  731. than panic? How do we become a people

  732. who step into purpose and plan and

  733. power? We anchor our hope in the truth

  734. of God's word. I've said it this way

  735. before. You can't know the God of the

  736. word if you don't know the word of

  737. God. Matter of fact, many of you know

  738. this. We've committed this year, 2025,

  739. to be the year that we read the Bible

  740. more. It always blesses my heart when I

  741. open up my Bible app every morning to

  742. read our daily reading for our

  743. churchwide Bible plan. I open it up and

  744. it shows that right now we have over 45

  745. people who have signed up to be a part

  746. of that Bible plan. And if you are

  747. looking for a way just to be reminded

  748. daily to step into the truth of God's

  749. word, to live it out, to apply your life

  750. to it, would you consider we have the QR

  751. code right there on our

  752. bulletin. Would you consider joining us

  753. and reading the Bible more in

  754. 2025? We're we're almost halfway there.

  755. And if you've not started, that's okay.

  756. Start right where we are. Scan that QR

  757. code. Set the reminder on your phone.

  758. five minutes or less, you can begin to

  759. fill your heart with God's word daily.

  760. But earthly thrones absolutely do not

  761. threaten heaven's rule. Herod thought he

  762. had the upper hand, but his power is

  763. limited. His rule is temporary. And I

  764. want us to remember this. He may be king

  765. at the moment, but he's never Lord.

  766. And whatever takes place in our life may

  767. seem like it's being the king of our

  768. life, but listen, it'll never be Lord of

  769. our life because there's only one Lord.

  770. There's only one maker of heaven and

  771. earth. It's God the Father, God the Son,

  772. and God the Holy Spirit. And he's

  773. calling you to step into a relationship

  774. with him to anchor your heart in

  775. him. So what do we do when suffering

  776. hits home?

  777. What do we do when James is

  778. executed? When Peter is imprisoned and

  779. when the so-called king seems to be

  780. winning, let me contextualize it. What

  781. do we do when marriage is

  782. difficult? What do we do when our child

  783. continues in rebellion? What What do we

  784. do

  785. when when the doctor gave us the news we

  786. didn't hope for? or when bad

  787. news hits us right between the eyes, a

  788. text message, a phone call, an email,

  789. when we lose someone we love. What do we

  790. do in those moments? Church, I want to

  791. remind us of this. We do what the early

  792. church did. We stand firm and we anchor

  793. our hope in Jesus. And and I want us to

  794. be a church. I pray, this is my prayer

  795. for us. I want us to be a church that

  796. falls to our knees and calls upon the

  797. name of Jesus to fill us, to direct us,

  798. and to guide us. And let me just clarify

  799. this. Though this is in the context of a

  800. difficult moment in the life of the

  801. church, and though I'm speaking into the

  802. context of a difficult moment in our

  803. lives as well, we don't just turn to

  804. Christ in difficult moments.

  805. Mountaintop or valley, good times or bad

  806. times, in the fire or in the breeze, we

  807. turn to the Lord and we anchor our

  808. hearts in him. We pray and we seek and

  809. we cling

  810. to. Let's never trade conviction for

  811. applause or purpose for panic. But let

  812. us be a people that press in. Let us be

  813. a people that pray because church, God's

  814. moving. God's working. And God is

  815. calling you. He's calling us. But I want

  816. to specify this. God is calling you to

  817. join him. He's whispering, "Roland, come

  818. join

  819. me." He's whispering your name. Crystal,

  820. come join me. John, come join me. Lacy,

  821. come join me. Stuart, come join me. He's

  822. whispering your name and he's calling

  823. you to join him no matter where you are.

  824. And I pray today maybe for some would be

  825. the day of salvation for you. Let's

  826. pray. Lord, I pray that you'd continue

  827. to work and move in and through this

  828. place.

  829. Lord, we thank you for reminders like

  830. Acts chapter

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  831. 12 that though the church endures pain

  832. and suffering, though your children

  833. endure pain and suffering, pain and

  834. suffering does not have the last

  835. word. Lord, I pray that you would

  836. continue to have your hand upon our time

  837. this

  838. morning as we seek you. And here in just

  839. a moment as we

  840. celebrate what it meant for us, for the

  841. world, for

  842. creation to have your body broken and

  843. your blood shed for us. In Jesus name we

  844. pray. God's people said, "Amen.
