  1. Hey, if you have your Bibles, meet me in

  2. the book or the Gospel of John, chapter

    John 1 chapter mention

  3. 1. I was about to say Acts, the book of

  4. Acts, but we're going to be in John's

  5. Gospel this morning. We're hitting the

  6. pause button from our Acts series to

  7. dive into our Christmas series that

  8. we've entitled He Came near. As a matter

  9. of fact, that's what we're focusing on

  10. over the course of the Christmas season

  11. and really understand the theological

  12. weight and depth of Jesus coming to

  13. earth, taking the form of man so that we

  14. might be reconciled back to our father

  15. who is in heaven. So, as you're turning

  16. to John chapter 1, we're going to be

    John 1 chapter mention

  17. looking at verses 1-8.

  18. I want to read to you though to just

  19. kick off our time this morning from the

  20. book of Revelation, chapter 3. Here's

    Revelation 3 chapter mention

  21. here's what I want us to understand this

  22. morning. As as Jesus came near to us,

  23. and we read about this in the Christmas

  24. story as uh he was born to a virgin, he

  25. was laid in a manger and the babe who

  26. came to us in the most miraculous

  27. circumstances imaginable over the face

  28. of the universe. That that babe would

  29. then grow to be the savior of mankind.

  30. that he would indeed as it was

  31. prophesied millennia before him through

  32. priests, prophets, and kings that he

  33. would become the lamb of God who would

  34. take away the sins of the world. And

  35. there was this longawwaited hope and

  36. expectation.

  37. Remember the Israelites at this point in

  38. the story were um under Roman

  39. occupation.

  40. They lacked a identity. They lacked an

  41. identity of a king. They lacked the

  42. identity of a nation. But the one thing

  43. that they held on to was the hope of the

  44. coming Messiah. As we dive into the

  45. Christmas story, we'll understand the

  46. significance of the fact that Jesus came

  47. near to us.

  48. And he came near to us despite the sin

  49. that is ever present in our life despite

  50. the disobedience and the rebellion that

  51. we take part in constantly.

  52. And it's not just our past sins. It's

  53. not even our present sins, at least not

  54. only. It's also our future sins. Despite

  55. all that darkness, his light shines

  56. brightly and he invites us in to

  57. relationship with our father who is in

  58. heaven. And Revelation 21 really

  59. provides the lens

  60. by which we look at John 1 in these

  61. first 18 verses. So, I'm going to read

  62. it to you and then we'll dive into our

  63. passage. Revelation 21:3 says, "Then I

    Revelation 21:3

  64. heard a loud voice from the throne."

  65. Remember, this is the Apostle John, the

  66. same John who wrote the gospel that

  67. we're about to read. He's exiled an

  68. island called Patmas. He's been exiled

  69. because of his faith, because there's a

  70. refusal

  71. to stop preaching the gospel.

  72. And so, he's exiled here. And while he's

  73. here, he gets this revelation from God.

  74. He gets this scene into heaven. He gets

  75. these glimpses of the future. He would

  76. later write down that revelation in what

  77. we know as the book of Revelation. And

  78. here in 21,

  79. he gives us this beautiful picture of

  80. really what the entirety of scripture is

  81. pointing us towards. In the theological

  82. world, we call this the meta narrative.

  83. That means everything from Genesis to

  84. Revelation and everything in between.

  85. From the major and minor prophets, the

  86. historical books in the Old Testament,

  87. the poetic books and the books of wisdom

  88. in the Old Testament to the Gospels

  89. and the letters, the epistles in the

  90. book of Revelation that everything is

  91. all centered on making Jesus known to

  92. the world. Now, why is that important?

  93. Because without Jesus, you and I remain

  94. lost and trapped in our sin. We remain

  95. under its bondage, enslaved

  96. to our own will and desires. And there's

  97. one thing I want to make absolutely

  98. clear. Apart from the saving grace of

  99. Jesus Christ, your will and your desires

  100. crave nothing more than rebellion, evil,

  101. chaos, and sin. Which is why the gospel

  102. is so important.

  103. Which is why you remember son and

  104. daughter of God prior to placing your

  105. faith in Christ as your Lord. You

  106. remember people telling you about the

  107. gospel. And maybe you even remember

  108. people being very stubborn on how they

  109. preached the gospel to you. But in all

  110. of that, there was a consistency

  111. that was pointing your heart to one

  112. thing. the repentance of your sin and

  113. the placing of your faith in the lamb of

  114. God who comes to take away the sins of

  115. the world. And so the gospel is

  116. necessary. The Christmas story is

  117. necessary.

  118. We need a savior who despite the things

  119. that we do separating us from him is

  120. willing to step into our mess.

  121. You see, we can easily phrase this

  122. sermon series as we came near to God.

  123. But in reality, your sin keeps you from

  124. coming near to God. Which is why Jesus

  125. needs to come near to us. He steps into

  126. the pain. He steps into the brokenness.

  127. And so John continues, look, God's

  128. dwelling place is with humanity.

  129. He will live with them. They will be his

  130. peoples. And God himself will be with

  131. them and will be their God. Everything

  132. that we are enduring, that we are

  133. experiencing, everything that we've gone

  134. through, everything will eventually lead

  135. up to this reality.

  136. When heaven and earth collide

  137. and all the loss and all the pain and

  138. all the chaos and the battles that we

  139. fight

  140. and the things that we engage in that we

  141. feel there's no end in sight it all

  142. leads to this the dwelling place of God

  143. the creator of all things

  144. of heaven and earth of the universe the

  145. sun the stars the moon that our God in

  146. heaven dwwell dwells with us. We dwell

  147. with him. And it is only made possible

  148. because of Jesus Christ.

  149. That is the foundation of Christianity.

  150. That's the foundation of our faith. It's

  151. the foundation of our belief. And so now

  152. John chapter 1. With that lens, let's

    John 1 chapter mention

  153. look at chapter 1:es 1-8.

  154. Here's what John writes.

  155. In the beginning was the word. Now you

  156. have to hit the pause button there for

  157. just a moment because you've read that

  158. before.

  159. You read it back in Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  160. In the beginning, God

  161. created the heavens and the earth.

  162. John is not choosing random words.

  163. He's not writing a random sentence. He's

  164. being intentional so that the reader

  165. makes the connection to creation.

  166. He's going to make this absolutely clear

  167. in the next couple of verses. And so

  168. he's connecting Christ to everything.

  169. This the Christmas story isn't a story

  170. that begins in Bethlehem.

  171. The Christmas story is not a story that

  172. begins when Jesus is laid in the manger.

  173. The Christmas story begins in Genesis 1.

  174. in the beginning

  175. and everything else that would follow is

  176. leading towards the salvation of the

  177. world. In the beginning was the word and

  178. the word was with God and the word was

  179. God.

  180. He was with God in the beginning. The

  181. the word of God is powerful.

  182. Here's what's amazing. All throughout

  183. the Old Testament, you had the word of

  184. God proclaimed

  185. through prophets, priests, and kings.

  186. And that word that was being proclaimed

  187. was a huge blinking arrow, a neon sign

  188. saying that the words I'm proclaiming

  189. are pointing to someone better, pointing

  190. to someone greater. John's going to get

  191. into this when he kind of takes a side

  192. step and brings clarification to the

  193. role of John the Baptist. Remember,

  194. John, the author of this gospel, is not

  195. the same individual who is known as John

  196. the Baptist. Those were two different

  197. Johns. And a bit of a biblical factoid

  198. that many of us probably already know.

  199. John the disciple, the one who wrote the

  200. gospels, his letters in the book of

  201. Revelation was known as the one whom

  202. Jesus loved. John the Baptist was known

  203. as John the Baptist because he

  204. emphasized the importance and the nature

  205. of baptism. But he was also the cousin

  206. of Jesus.

  207. And so the word continues, he was with

  208. God in the beginning. All things were

  209. created through him and apart from him

  210. not one thing was created that has been

  211. created. In him was life and that life

  212. was the light of men. What was in him?

  213. Life. What's the result of that life?

  214. light shining in us, exposing our need

  215. for forgiveness, exposing the sin that

  216. corrupts, rots, and destroys the soul.

  217. Exposes the very thoughts and the

  218. actions and the deeds in our life that

  219. continually push us and separate us from

  220. our father who is in heaven. When Jesus

  221. came to earth, when he was existing

  222. prior to creation because of his eternal

  223. nature, you and I

  224. were in his mind. You and I were living

  225. in the future according to his plan.

  226. This is what the scripture declares.

  227. And so it continues,

  228. "Light shines in the darkness and yet

  229. the darkness did not overcome it." And

  230. here in verse six, John begins to take

  231. aside almost like this parenthetical

  232. statement to bring clarity about who

  233. John the Baptist was. And he says,

  234. "There was a man sent from God whose

  235. name was John. He came as a witness to

  236. testify about the light so that all

  237. might believe through him. He was not

  238. the light but he came to testify about

  239. the light. This is this is why the fact

  240. that that John is declaring that the

  241. word is Jesus is because the word that

  242. was proclaimed in the Old Testament all

  243. pointed towards the Lord. And so you had

  244. things like I will hide God's word in my

  245. heart that I might not sin against him.

  246. That your word is a lamp unto my feet

  247. and a light unto my path. You see how

  248. John is making the connection here? It's

  249. not just words. Watch this. It's not

  250. just words printed on a page.

  251. Truth, powerful, foundational,

  252. but it's what the words declare. And

  253. it's who the word is. Why is that so

  254. important? Why is that distinction

  255. necessary? Because there are so many

  256. people, and I've seen and experienced

  257. this in my 20 plus years of ministry.

  258. There are so many people who know this

  259. word, who can quote this word, who will

  260. win a biblical trivia game, champion,

  261. first place, gold medal participants.

  262. And yet in their heart, the living word,

  263. Jesus Christ is not there. He's not

  264. present. There's one thing to know the

  265. written word. It's entirely something

  266. else to know the actual word, the living

  267. word. And this is what John is getting

  268. at.

  269. And so he continues,

  270. "He was in the world. The world was

  271. created through him. And yet the world

  272. did not recognize him."

  273. I know in a crowd this size, there are

  274. some of us here this morning who don't

  275. recognize the Lord.

  276. says in verse 13

  277. or in verse in verse 11, he came to his

  278. own and his own people did not receive

  279. him, but to all who did receive him. I

  280. love this. We'll unpack this here in

  281. just a moment. He gave them the right to

  282. be children of God. That word right is a

  283. legal term.

  284. That means that you now possess all

  285. promises and all inheritances

  286. because you've now been given the right

  287. to be children of God to those who

  288. believe in his name who were born not of

  289. natural descent or of the will of the

  290. flesh or of the will of man but of God.

  291. The word became flesh and dwelt among

  292. us.

  293. We observed his glory, the glory as the

  294. one and only son from the father full of

  295. grace and truth.

  296. John testified concerning him and

  297. exclaimed, "This was the one of whom I

  298. said, the one coming after me ranks

  299. ahead of me because he existed before

  300. me." Indeed, we have all received grace

  301. upon grace from his fullness. For the

  302. law was given through Moses. Grace and

  303. truth came through Jesus Christ.

  304. And verse 18 right here is a crescendo,

  305. right? This is this is what John is

  306. pointing us to. This is what it's all

  307. about. This is why Jesus came to dwell

  308. among us. This is why we read Revelation

    Revelation 21:3

  309. 21:3 that the dwelling place of God is

  310. with man, man with God. Because of this

  311. verse 18, no one has ever seen God, the

  312. one and only son who is himself God and

  313. is at the father's side. He, Jesus, the

  314. word, the one who's filled with grace

  315. and truth, the lamb of God who's come to

  316. take away the sins of the world. What's

  317. his purpose? He has revealed

  318. him.

  319. And all God's people said,

  320. >> Lord, bless your word. Holy Spirit,

  321. would you stir our hearts?

  322. This is an incredible an incredible

  323. passage.

  324. It unpacked so much theology for us. And

  325. really, we can spend the next couple of

  326. weeks just unpacking what John is really

  327. pointing us to here in the gospel. But

  328. here's what we need to understand. Let

  329. me let me just kind of go back for for

  330. just a moment. Our sin separates us from

  331. God.

  332. We are born into this world with a

  333. nature and a default setting that not

  334. just desires rebellion against God but

  335. takes joy and pride

  336. in rebelling against the Lord. Which is

  337. why when the Holy Spirit comes into your

  338. heart and your life and awakens faith

  339. within you so that you realize you need

  340. to place your faith in Jesus and no

  341. longer in the faith of the things of

  342. this world. There is conviction and

  343. accountability. And let me just say

  344. this, biblical accountability and

  345. biblical conviction will never shame

  346. you, but will call you to repentance.

  347. The enemy wants you to wallow in your

  348. shame. The enemy wants you to wallow in

  349. your guilt. And normally when we wallow

  350. in our shame in guilt, that almost

  351. always leads to a mindset that we're

  352. unforgivable.

  353. that somehow my actions are greater than

  354. the love of God.

  355. That there is a power that exists in me

  356. that overpowers the grace and the mercy

  357. of God.

  358. And a mindset like that is at the root

  359. of idolatry.

  360. To think that I'm more powerful than

  361. God. That my sin outweighs his love for

  362. me. That my darkness consumes his light

  363. rather than his light eradicating my

  364. darkness. That becomes the root of

  365. idolatry in our life. And every instance

  366. of idolatry in the scriptures and really

  367. if you do some self-inventory, every

  368. instance of idolatry in your life is all

  369. rooted in you thinking so much of

  370. yourself,

  371. thinking that you are more powerful,

  372. thinking that you are better than. And

  373. maybe outright we would never say that.

  374. We would never say I'm better than God.

  375. I'm more powerful than God. But your

  376. belief system and therefore your actions

  377. would demonstrate that

  378. John is calling us to the greater

  379. reality

  380. that Jesus Christ is the one who exposes

  381. who we are and calls us to

  382. reconciliation with the father. So

  383. here's what I want to do. I want us to

  384. go back to our passage. I want us to

  385. pull out some scenes that we see here on

  386. how Jesus is revealing the father to us.

  387. And and let me just say this, this could

  388. be a sermon series in and of itself. We

  389. see the triune nature of God here.

  390. Well, what does that mean? We see the

  391. Trinity

  392. at move and at work through not just

  393. John's gospel and really through the

  394. entirety of scripture. And John will do

  395. an incredible job of unpacking this.

  396. You see the father and the son existing

  397. at the very same time. For you Bible

  398. nerds in uh the room, this this is

  399. what's incredible. So here in verse one,

  400. when John writes, "In the beginning was

  401. the word and the word was with God.

  402. Literally what what John is saying is

  403. that Jesus and the father were face to

  404. face.

  405. This is where we get the theological

  406. reality of three persons, one God.

  407. There's father, there's son and there's

  408. holy spirits. And here in the very

  409. beginning, this is outside of time. I

  410. know when we read in the beginning, we

  411. we correlate that with with time. But

  412. this is John's way. This is the Bible's

  413. way of giving us some markers to attach

  414. to, giving us a frame of thinking so

  415. that we can understand. But we need to

  416. know God exists outside of time. So in

  417. the beginning, outside of time, eternity

  418. has no beginning. FYI, God was there.

  419. And it wasn't just the father. Jesus was

  420. there with him. Now, why is this

  421. important? Because what is John

  422. demonstrating here? That we're lost in

  423. our sin. We need to be reconciled to the

  424. father. And the only way the father is

  425. revealed to us because no one is holy

  426. enough to go before the holy God of

  427. creation. Remember throughout our Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  428. chapter 1 series we talked about that

  429. what our sin is is not just rebellion or

  430. disobedience to God. Your sin and my sin

  431. is an affront. It's an insult. It's a

  432. declaration of pride against the holy

  433. nature of God, against his sacredness.

  434. And when you and I sin, we spit on the

  435. sacredness of God. So often we don't

  436. realize

  437. what our sin actually is

  438. most often. And and it could be because

  439. how language is is so often changing. It

  440. could be because instead of of really

  441. talking about what that affront is,

  442. we'll say things like mistakes or you

  443. messed up or or or man, you just you did

  444. something you shouldn't have. And yes,

  445. those all describe what what sin does

  446. and what sin is. But I think because

  447. words are ever changing, we really don't

  448. take serious what our rebellion is

  449. against the Lord. And and this is what

  450. John is demonstrating. Listen, God has

  451. come into the world.

  452. And he's come into the world through his

  453. son

  454. so that he can come near to us

  455. so that we don't have to remain broken.

  456. We don't have to remain lost. We don't

  457. have to remain wandering aimlessly

  458. without any solution to the sin problem

  459. in our world. We can find hope and peace

  460. and comfort and joy despite what the

  461. world throws at us because of the father

  462. who is in heaven. Who has demonstrated

  463. his love through the son Jesus Christ

  464. whose life appeased the holy

  465. requirements of God whose death appeased

  466. his wrath because of your sin not his

  467. sin. He's sinless but because of your

  468. and my sin.

  469. And three days later, he raises

  470. victoriously from the grave in full

  471. demonstration that he indeed is who he

  472. says he is. 40 days later he'll ascend

  473. to the father and there he sits at his

  474. right hand interceding

  475. >> on our behalf pleading our case

  476. providing guidance through the

  477. indwelling power of the Holy Spirit

  478. awaiting the day of the second advent

  479. where he will come in glory and power

  480. and majesty

  481. and all the sin and evil and the affront

  482. to his sacred secretness, all the

  483. insults and the spitting on his name and

  484. holiness will be done away with and they

  485. will be judged

  486. because they've chosen to rebel against

  487. the Lord. Maybe

  488. some of us here this morning, we're

  489. living in that rebellion.

  490. And maybe up until today, we've actually

  491. never heard the rebellion in our sin

  492. phrased that way.

  493. But that's what it is.

  494. Today's the day. We said it last week

  495. that the shackles of sin and the bondage

  496. of evil in your life are broken and

  497. loosed because of Jesus Christ. Because

  498. he came near. He dwelt among us. He has

  499. shown us who the father is. So, so

  500. again, let's go back to our passage.

  501. We'll pull out some things that we see

  502. here. If you're taking notes, here's

  503. here's the first thing. Jesus reveals

  504. the father by showing us who he is.

  505. He shows us who he is. We we talked

  506. about this. He was face to face with God

  507. and he is God. He was there in the

  508. beginning. And I love this. Let's go

  509. let's go here to verse three.

  510. All things were created through him

  511. and apart from him. Not one thing was

  512. created that has been created.

  513. In him was life, and that life was the

  514. light of men. That light shines in the

  515. darkness, and yet the darkness did not

  516. overcome

  517. it.

  518. John is making a case here

  519. that Jesus indeed is who he says he is.

  520. And when we look to Jesus, we'll find

  521. the father.

  522. which is why he makes this connection

  523. back in verse one to the creation

  524. account in Genesis. In the beginning was

  525. God. And what do we read? If you're

  526. familiar with the rest of the creation

  527. story, the scripture says God said, "Let

  528. there be." And

  529. >> there was.

  530. Let there be and there was. So what God

  531. spoke came into existence. What God

  532. spoke was created. And then John in

  533. continuing

  534. to double down on this truth, on this

  535. reality. Says all things were created

  536. through him,

  537. the word.

  538. Who's the word? Jesus. What about the

  539. word? He was there from the beginning.

  540. What about the word? He's eternal. He's

  541. central to creation. He's the lifegiver.

  542. And it's through life that light

  543. illuminates in you. And when that light

  544. illuminates in you, it chases out the

  545. darkness. That's the point.

  546. So many of us though, that light shines

  547. and we think the gospel is a light

  548. switch. We shut it off

  549. because we enjoy the darkness more than

  550. we enjoy the light.

  551. And you know this, you can't go anywhere

  552. in darkness.

  553. You can't pursue anything in darkness.

  554. And what the devil will do, make no

  555. mistake, this is who the battle is

  556. against. We're battling against

  557. spiritual powers and principalities of

  558. this world. But also, make no mistake,

  559. there's a greater power that rests in

  560. you, son of God, daughter of God. That's

  561. a light. And what does this light do?

  562. Shines in the darkness. And the darkness

  563. did not did not overcome

  564. it.

  565. Quit believing the lie that the darkness

  566. in your life has the power to extinguish

  567. the light of the gospel. It does not.

  568. The darkness in your life gives way,

  569. retreats

  570. because of the light of the gospel. The

  571. darkness of your life is forgiven

  572. because of the light of the gospel. This

  573. is how Jesus reveals the father. He

  574. shows us who he is. And I want to

  575. challenge us with this. If you look

  576. anywhere other than Jesus to understand

  577. God, and maybe this is where you are

  578. today, if you look to yourself, if you

  579. look to your purpose, if you look to

  580. your job, if you look to your

  581. accomplishments, you will only continue

  582. in a path of darkness.

  583. I've said it this way so many times

  584. before. Good things can become bad

  585. things

  586. if those good things become our greatest

  587. things.

  588. And the greatest thing, the greatest one

  589. should be Jesus Christ. That is why when

  590. we look to Jesus, when we recognize who

  591. he is, the father comes into view.

  592. Paul tells us in his letter to the

  593. Corinthian church that the veil is

  594. removed from us

  595. so that we could truly see the glory and

  596. the goodness of God. And not only see

  597. it, but John will later write in his

  598. letters, we can know it. We can

  599. experience it. We can live it out. But

  600. it begins with Jesus. Here's the second

  601. thing that we see.

  602. Jesus reveals the father by showing us

  603. who we are. Did you pick up on that? And

  604. I love how he juxtaposes this with

  605. showing us who Jesus is.

  606. And then he inserts this this

  607. parenthetical statement as as we

  608. mentioned. He he kind of takes this

  609. sideep in order to address that John the

  610. Baptist was just the one who declared

  611. about the Messiah who was to come. He's

  612. not the Messiah himself.

  613. There were so many people, especially at

  614. this point in the biblical story, who

  615. looked to John and thought he was the

  616. Messiah.

  617. He's eloquent with his words. He's

  618. powerful when he preaches. People are

  619. coming to him to be baptized. He's

  620. obviously beginning this movement. John

  621. himself must be the Messiah. John the

  622. Apostle here brings clarity

  623. to it.

  624. But I love how John is showing us who we

  625. are.

  626. Because oftent times, if you're anything

  627. like me, you can get in the trap of

  628. thinking too much of yourself.

  629. And so, you'll read the biblical story,

  630. you'll read biblical accounts, and

  631. you'll think, "How how could they deny

  632. the Lord?

  633. How could they, despite seeing miracle

  634. after miracle after miracle, still turn

  635. their back on Jesus?" And we think, "If

  636. that were me, no way would I deny the

  637. Lord." You're thinking too much of

  638. yourself

  639. because you've already denied the Lord.

  640. Your entire life prior to salvation has

  641. been a denial of the Lord. And maybe

  642. your rebuttal is, "Yes, but I never saw

  643. a uh miracles

  644. like the way they saw in the

  645. scriptures." Yeah, you did. You've seen

  646. people be resurrected out of death and

  647. sin to life eternal. That's the greatest

  648. miracle. a changed life, a changed

  649. heart. Jesus himself said, "If you can't

  650. even believe the word of the law in the

  651. prophets and what they declared, then

  652. your heart is so dark and you won't even

  653. believe if someone is resurrected from

  654. the grave."

  655. Which is why the testimony of a changed

  656. life is so powerful. Which is why Jesus

  657. will tell us in Matthew's gospel during

  658. the sermon on the mount that the light

  659. that dwells in you, the light here that

  660. John is pointing us towards, a light

  661. that overpowers the darkness, a light

  662. that the darkness can never extinguish,

  663. that light dwells in you. And because

  664. that light dwells in you, you are to let

  665. that light so shine before others that

  666. they may see the good in you. They may

  667. see Christ in you. They may see the Holy

  668. Spirit's resurrecting power in you. And

  669. when they witness that, when they see

  670. your life transformed and changed, what

  671. does the scripture declare? They'll give

  672. honor and glory to our father who is in

  673. heaven.

  674. This is who we are. We are people far

  675. from God, in need of God. And and let me

  676. just camp here for just a m moment

  677. before we move on. Go with me to verse

  678. 10.

  679. says he was in the world

  680. and the world was created through him

  681. and yet the world did not what recognize

  682. him. So, so who are we? We are people so

  683. caught up in darkness and rebellion that

  684. we don't even recognize the light when

  685. he's right in front of us.

  686. Which is why we need a movement of the

  687. spirit.

  688. Verse 11, he came to his own

  689. and his own people did not receive him.

  690. John, I I love this because this is

  691. John's way of looking at the nation of

  692. Israel, saying, "I'm talking to you.

  693. You did not receive him." It's very easy

  694. for us to hear these words and point the

  695. finger and to say, "I hope they're

  696. listening. I hope he's listening." But

  697. John takes a moment to say, "No, you

  698. better be listening because this is

  699. about you. You rejected him.

  700. Verse 12, but to all who did receive

  701. him, he gave the right to be children of

  702. God. To those who what? Who believe in

  703. his name. He gives us the right. That's

  704. legal language. that now because of

  705. Jesus we possess the promises and the

  706. inheritance of heaven which Peter will

  707. later write in his letter tell us is

  708. being stored up for us an inheritance

  709. and a promise that is undefiled unfading

  710. and incorruptible.

  711. It is a certainty. Why? Because we now

  712. have the right to be called his child

  713. through what? Through belief in his

  714. name. Here's where we run into serious

  715. trouble.

  716. So many of us like to cling to the right

  717. of being a child of God without ever

  718. professing any belief in the name of

  719. God.

  720. And we think that our life is okay while

  721. we're still in active sin and rebellion

  722. against the Lord. And we may say, "I

  723. believe and I pray that that belief is

  724. true." But what we gather from scripture

  725. is that actions always follow belief.

  726. The way you behave is going to be rooted

  727. in what you confess.

  728. and what you believe in your heart

  729. because where your treasure is, your

  730. what will be also. Your heart will be

  731. also.

  732. And so so many people today, they want

  733. to claim the promises and the

  734. inheritance of God without actually

  735. following God. And maybe you find

  736. yourself today in a place where you

  737. recognize there are things in my life

  738. that are not right before the Lord.

  739. There's actions and choices and

  740. decisions that I'm making that are in

  741. rebellion against him.

  742. I want you to know that what the

  743. scripture declares is that the light of

  744. Jesus

  745. cries out to you in that darkness

  746. and Jesus takes the wrath. He takes the

  747. punishment on your behalf.

  748. So that through your belief, through

  749. your faith,

  750. you would recognize your need for

  751. salvation

  752. and receive his grace, live in

  753. accordance with his grace, and have your

  754. life transformed.

  755. Have you stepped

  756. into faith? Have you stepped into his

  757. family? Here's the third thing that we

  758. see. I love this. Y'all picked up on

  759. this. This is one of my favorite parts.

  760. Jesus reveals the Father by coming near

  761. to us.

  762. Let's go to verse 14.

  763. The Word became flesh and dwelt among

  764. us.

  765. We observed his glory, the glory as the

  766. one and only son from the Father, full

  767. of grace and truth.

  768. This is what is so neat. Some of you

  769. Bible nerds in the room, you know where

  770. I'm going with this. That word dwelt

  771. there

  772. is the same word that is used throughout

  773. the scripture for tabernacle.

  774. And what do we know about the

  775. tabernacle? The tabernacle was the

  776. meeting place with God.

  777. It was the place where the high priest

  778. would go and intercede on behalf of the

  779. people of God and offer atonement for

  780. the sins of the people so that they can

  781. be reconciled back to God. They can be

  782. united back to God, no longer separated

  783. because of the evil and chaos in their

  784. life.

  785. But one would enter into the tabernacle,

  786. the place where God dwelled,

  787. and they would offer up the atonement,

  788. and God would receive his people,

  789. and he would cover his people with grace

  790. and provision and sustenance and

  791. guidance. Here's the big picture. We

  792. find that in Jesus.

  793. Jesus is the tabernacle of God. He is

  794. the meeting place where we discover the

  795. father so that anyone who's anyone can

  796. come to Jesus and can discover the

  797. meeting place of God and have your life

  798. transformed, have your sins atoned for.

  799. What John is saying and the people of

  800. Israel would have picked up on it. The

  801. readers in these times would have picked

  802. up on it that he came to dwell among us.

  803. He tabernacled among us. He popped the

  804. tent among us so that we could meet with

  805. God because God despite the darkness and

  806. sin in our life came near to us. And in

  807. Jesus created the meeting place by which

  808. we have an encounter with our father who

  809. is in heaven. Which is why in verse 18,

  810. John closes the passage this way. No one

  811. has ever seen God. Why? Because we don't

  812. bear the holiness

  813. in order to go before God. Which is why

  814. we need Jesus,

  815. the one and only son, who is himself God

  816. and is at the father's side. What has he

  817. done? He's revealed him to us.

  818. He's made the father known to us. He is

  819. tabernacled among us. The dwelling place

  820. of God is now with man.

  821. We've all received this grace upon grace

  822. in verse 16 from his fullness. And let

  823. me just close with this church. If you

  824. don't see Jesus clearly, you'll never

  825. experience the father miraculously.

  826. And it all begins by knowing who Christ

  827. is.

  828. It all begins by aiming everything

  829. within you, your being, your power, your

  830. strength, the way we say it, your time,

  831. talent, and treasures, and aiming it

  832. towards the mission and the kingdom of

  833. God. But that only happens when we

  834. encounter Jesus.

  835. So come to the light. Come to the one

  836. who expels the darkness. Come to the one

  837. who came near to us so that we could be

  838. brought near to the father. Let us come

  839. to Jesus. Let's pray.

  840. Lord, we thank you for your word. We

  841. thank you for today.

  842. We pray that you would continue to

  843. move and work

  844. in and through us.

  845. We thank you for a gospel proclaimed.

  846. I pray right now for a gospel received.

  847. And Lord, as you continue to call people

  848. out of sin

  849. and into life eternal,

  850. I pray that as those decisions are made

  851. that men would become the leaders in

  852. their home that they're called to be,

  853. the husbands, the fathers,

  854. the business owners, the employees that

  855. that women would step into

  856. being a woman of faith,

  857. a woman who is adorned with the gospel

  858. that we would be a church that

  859. represents you in all that we say and

  860. do. Jesus, we thank you that you are the

  861. light that expels the darkness. And we

  862. thank you that you came to reveal the

  863. father. Christ's name we pray. All God's

  864. people said, "Amen." Hey, would you

  865. stand to your feet with me?
