  1. Well, anyways, this morning, if you have

  2. a Bible, go ahead and open it up to

  3. Colossians 1, verse 15, uh, through 22

    Colossians 1:15

  4. is where we're going to spend the

  5. majority of our time this morning.

  6. Um, and I really, really enjoyed just

  7. kind of looking over this, and I've

  8. always enjoyed the book of Colossians. I

  9. don't know about y'all, but I've always

  10. enjoyed uh just kind of reading through

  11. the letters that Paul wrote, but

  12. especially the letter that Paul wrote to

  13. the church in Colasse. And as I was

  14. reading over this, just with it being in

  15. the Christmas spirit and just the fact

  16. that we've got our our little boy now

  17. and and it's so special because now we

  18. get to experience that first Christmas

  19. of being parents and even though he's 3

  20. months old, he's going to have more

  21. Christmas presents than he ever knows

  22. what to do with that he's never going to

  23. remember. Um just because that's what

  24. you do as parents, right? You give your

  25. kids way more than they ever deserve.

  26. And then he's got grandparents that are

  27. going to absolutely give them way more

  28. than what we're giving them. So just a

  29. lot of fun. Um, if y'all are really

  30. looking for something to get us

  31. personally, uh, we wear a size, uh, 10

  32. by 20 storage unit. Um,

  33. that would be greatly appreciated. Um,

  34. it can be it can be a wooden shed, it

  35. can be a metal shed, whatever you feel

  36. fancy with. Um, but no, I'm just

  37. teasing. But, um, I just remember

  38. thinking back to those sweet moments

  39. when I was a kid and just what Christmas

  40. felt like. And it felt like there was

  41. just this sense of just inspiring magic.

  42. Um, and I began to think about like,

  43. man, what were some of the cool things

  44. that I got as a kid and I thought back

  45. to this one moment when when my dad, he

  46. bought us, it wasn't even a gift that I

  47. got, but he bought my sister this

  48. Galileo telescope. And I remember my

  49. sister opened it and she was so excited

  50. because she was super into astrology and

  51. I was too. And I was real into geology

  52. as well and rocks and I just really

  53. wanted a asteroid of some sort just to

  54. say I had it. And I remember when we

  55. finally got it out and we got it open

  56. and my dad decides to pick the coldest

  57. night of the year, which there's only

  58. two days in winter that there's actually

  59. winter in South Texas. Uh, and my dad

  60. decides to pick the night where it's 30°

  61. outside. So, we're nestled in the truck,

  62. huddled together, just freezing to

  63. death. Um, but my dad is outside getting

  64. this telescope set up and he's getting

  65. it all keyed in and queued in on the

  66. stars and all the planets and we got to

  67. see everything. It was so cool. I was an

  68. eight-year-old kid getting to see Saturn

  69. with its rings, getting to see Jupiter

  70. with its with its uh little dot and

  71. getting to see um you know, Mars and

  72. Venus and the moon and feeling like I

  73. was going to be Neil Armstrong that got

  74. to walk on the moon and just it was so

  75. inspiring and getting to see all the

  76. stars and the expanse and he's pointing

  77. out the Big Dipper and he's pointing out

  78. Orion's belt and he's like, "Hey, look,

  79. this is all that has been given to us."

  80. And it made me immediately shrink in

  81. that moment.

  82. And I don't know if you've ever felt

  83. that way where you look at something and

  84. you began to realize the expanse of

  85. everything

  86. because something shifted in that

  87. moment. Everything that felt big in my

  88. world, whatever I was worried about,

  89. whatever I was frustrated with, whatever

  90. I was overwhelmed by, especially as a

  91. young kid, suddenly felt so small in

  92. comparison. I felt small in comparison.

  93. I felt like I was just a speck of dust

  94. floating around in a room.

  95. Nothing in my life changed,

  96. just perspective.

  97. I saw something truly bigger.

  98. And I don't think that we ever truly

  99. outgrow that need because we live in a

  100. world where our problems always feel so

  101. massive. They always feel much bigger

  102. than what they truly are. Our schedules

  103. are always so packed and so heavy and so

  104. weighted down and it feels like there's

  105. constant pressures that are pushing down

  106. on our shoulders and there's always this

  107. next deadline, this next due date, this

  108. next thing that we've got to get to that

  109. we just get so caught up in rush and

  110. hustle and bustle and then all of a

  111. sudden our emotions begin to just take

  112. over and it feels deafening and crushing

  113. and without meaning to. Sometimes we

  114. even do this with our view of Jesus,

  115. with our view of how God is and how big

  116. God is. We shrink it to a size of

  117. whatever we're going through. We make it

  118. manageable. We try to make it

  119. comfortable. We want it to be familiar.

  120. And almost like we can just somehow tuck

  121. him into this little box of our

  122. day-to-day life.

  123. And that's exactly what was happening to

  124. the church in Colasse. And that's what

  125. Paul is writing to. They didn't deny

  126. Jesus. They weren't saying that Jesus

  127. didn't exist or that Jesus wasn't who he

  128. said he was, but they rather started

  129. treating Jesus like he was just a

  130. stepping stone to the next process in

  131. the spiritual journey. Like he was one

  132. piece of a much larger puzzle.

  133. And they began to hear from these false

  134. teachers and these false prophets that

  135. they needed Jesus plus some aspect of

  136. special knowledge. They needed Jesus

  137. plus these strict legalistic rules. They

  138. needed Jesus plus these spiritual

  139. experiences to truly encounter the one

  140. true God.

  141. And slowly as these began to kind of

  142. make their way into the church. And as

  143. they began to kind of really dig deep

  144. into the minds of the church in Colasse,

  145. their view of Christ began to get

  146. smaller.

  147. So what does Paul do? Well, Paul does

  148. what Paul does. and he says, "You know

  149. what? I'm gonna write him a letter and

  150. I'm going to correct these things." But

  151. rather than diving straight into

  152. arguments, rather than picking apart

  153. these teachings and dissecting them,

  154. Paul does something completely

  155. different.

  156. He lifts their eyes.

  157. He gives them a picture of Jesus that

  158. higher than creation, deeper than

  159. redemption, wider than the universe

  160. itself.

  161. He shows them and points to them a Jesus

  162. so glorious that everything else begins

  163. to completely shrink in comparison.

  164. And that's what he does in Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  165. chapter 1 15-22.

  166. It's almost as if Paul puts his hands on

  167. his shoulders on our shoulders and he

  168. says, "Before we deal with anything

  169. else,

  170. let's just look to him.

  171. Not just a quick glance, but let's

  172. really examine who Jesus is. Let's

  173. really understand and dive much deeper

  174. than the surface than the surface to

  175. understand who the savior is. Because

  176. when you see Jesus for who he truly is,

  177. everything else, your fears, your

  178. failures, your shame, your stress,

  179. your emotions, whatever situations we're

  180. walking through suddenly don't seem so

  181. overwhelming anymore.

  182. And that's what we're going to see as we

  183. read it together. So let's look at

  184. Colossians chapter 1 verse 15- 22.

    Colossians 1:15–22

  185. And it says, "He is the image of the

  186. invisible God, the firstborn of all

  187. creation. For by him all things were

  188. created in heaven and on earth, visible

  189. and invisible, whether thrones or

  190. dominions or rulers or authorities, all

  191. things were created through him and for

  192. him." And he is before all things. And

  193. in him all things hold together. And he

  194. is the head of the body, the church. He

  195. is the beginning, the firstborn from the

  196. dead, that in everything he might be

  197. preeeminent. For in him all the fullness

  198. of God was pleased to dwell. And through

  199. him to reconcile to himself all things,

  200. whether on earth or in heaven, making

  201. peace by the blood of his cross. And you

  202. who once were alienated and hostile in

  203. mind, doing evil deeds, he is now

  204. reconciled in his body of flesh by his

  205. death in order to present you holy and

  206. blameless and above reproach before him.

  207. Let's pray for a second.

  208. Father God, we just lift this time up to

  209. you, Lord. Just praying that your word

  210. just speak to us, Lord. Just praying

  211. that you open our eyes and our hearts to

  212. who you are, Lord. May we grow to know

  213. you more, Lord. May we grow to

  214. understand your word. Lord, bless this

  215. time. Amen.

  216. >> And so, I just love immediately how Paul

  217. comes right out in verse 15 where he

  218. says, "He is the image of God." This is

  219. a statement that Paul is making. Stall

  220. Paul is not denying that Jesus is the

  221. image of God. He's come right out and

  222. saying this is the image of God. If

  223. you're looking for who God is, look to

  224. Christ. That is the first place that you

  225. must look. And I think that there's

  226. three key points that we can draw out of

  227. this that Paul is pointing us to that

  228. help us to better put Jesus into the

  229. true picture that God has intended for

  230. him to stand in that icon, that image of

  231. who Jesus is. And that's first thing

  232. that we must understand is that Jesus is

  233. first.

  234. Jesus is first. Jesus was first. Jesus

  235. will be first. And so, let's step into

  236. this like we're stepping into a go into

  237. a story together.

  238. Because imagine Paul sitting down with

  239. believers in Colossians, even though

  240. he's writing them a letter and he's

  241. writing this to his friend,

  242. knowing that they've been hearing all

  243. these mixed messages of you need Jesus

  244. plus something else.

  245. But Paul gently just says, "Let me show

  246. you who the real Jesus is. Let me show

  247. you the true Jesus that you have never

  248. truly maybe encountered or maybe that

  249. you've heard about, but now you've

  250. truncated him down to something

  251. smaller."

  252. And so he tells them that he is the

  253. image of the invisible God. Think about

  254. that for a second. He's not saying this

  255. is just some partial or faint glimpse or

  256. reflection of God. He's the full living

  257. picture of who God is.

  258. Paul is inviting us to see that Jesus is

  259. the true image of God. The God who

  260. seemed invisible has now become visible.

  261. He's saying, "Look at Jesus and you will

  262. see exactly who God is."

  263. But then look at the word that Paul uses

  264. there.

  265. He goes from saying that he is the image

  266. of the invisible God to now he is the

  267. firstborn of all creation. And I like

  268. how he uses that word firstborn. But

  269. immediately in our mind what we begin to

  270. think is oh he's talking about how Jesus

  271. was part of creation and Jesus was the

  272. first of creation. So therefore Jesus

  273. was created by God. That's a misguided

  274. statement and that is nowhere anywhere

  275. true because in our world firstborn

  276. might make us think of birth order but

  277. in the Bible it's about rank and it's

  278. about honor.

  279. For example, we know that David was

  280. given the rank of firstborn but David

  281. was not the firstborn of Jesse's sons.

  282. He was the youngest but yet he was

  283. chosen and was told that he was the

  284. firstborn.

  285. And so Paul is saying Jesus is the one

  286. who stands above all of creation.

  287. He's the one who everything else points

  288. to. All of creation points back to the

  289. firstborn of creation.

  290. Not only that,

  291. but he's saying that Jesus is the one

  292. who stands above all of creation. He is

  293. outside of creation. He is not bound by

  294. creation. He is not bound like we are.

  295. He is outside of it.

  296. But then

  297. we see as he goes on into verse 16 where

  298. he says, for by him all things were

  299. created in heaven and on earth.

  300. But that statement for him is a

  301. significant point. It identifies Jesus

  302. as the aim of creation, not just a piece

  303. or a part of the story of creation. He

  304. is saying that everything from the

  305. moment from the time that God spoke and

  306. creation came into existence. Jesus is

  307. already being laid as the foundation for

  308. creation. Jesus is the reason for

  309. creation. He is the firstborn of

  310. creation.

  311. This is to show us that Jesus is the

  312. alpha and the omega, the beginning and

  313. the end. And we start to see that this

  314. isn't just about adding Jesus to our

  315. lives.

  316. It's about realizing that Jesus is the

  317. center of every aspect of our life.

  318. Jesus is at the center of every aspect

  319. of everything that has life

  320. because then as it continues it tells us

  321. that he is before all things and in him

  322. all things hold together. So let's think

  323. about what that means for us. Let's put

  324. that into practical terms.

  325. It means that every part of our life,

  326. every aspect, every hope, every worry,

  327. every dream

  328. is held together by him.

  329. So that means that Jesus not only

  330. existed prior to creation, but he

  331. actively participated in creation and

  332. continues to sustain creation. He is the

  333. sovereign king of the universe.

  334. So why is this important?

  335. Why does this matter? Why do we need to

  336. know these things if we've already been

  337. told these things and we understand

  338. these things? Jesus isn't just someone

  339. we add on top of everything else because

  340. a lot of times that's where we want to

  341. put Jesus. We want to put him at the top

  342. of the checklist. We want to wake up in

  343. the morning and go check. Had my Jesus

  344. time. Oh, woke up on Sunday, went to

  345. church, got that out of the way. I can

  346. move on now to the next aspect of my

  347. life because the Jesus part is taken

  348. care of. So therefore, it's good. I've

  349. done what God has called me to do to put

  350. Jesus first. So I put Jesus first and

  351. I'm now I'm done. Rest of the checklist

  352. comes and it's all about me.

  353. No, he's not someone we add on top of

  354. everything else. Jesus wants to be

  355. central to the checklist that is our

  356. life. Central to everything that we do,

  357. central in anything that we do. He's the

  358. one who gives everything its meaning and

  359. its value.

  360. That's what Paul wants them to see.

  361. Stop treating it like it's just some

  362. spiritual experience, like it's just

  363. this one-time thing that gives you a

  364. quick spiritual high and you move on to

  365. the next.

  366. He wants us to know that when we put

  367. Jesus first,

  368. we're actually seeing him as he truly

  369. is.

  370. the one who was there at the beginning,

  371. the one who holds all things together,

  372. and the one for whom everything exists.

  373. So, as we continue to step into this

  374. text together, let's remember Jesus is

  375. first, not just in theory, but in the

  376. reality of our everyday lives.

  377. And as we see him that way, what we're

  378. going to begin to realize is that when

  379. we put Jesus first, when we put Jesus

  380. central to everything, when we look to

  381. him in every aspect of our life,

  382. it's like everything else begins to just

  383. slowly fall into place. It's like the

  384. natural order begins to take place

  385. because now God is structuring our life

  386. instead of us trying to structure it

  387. ourselves.

  388. Stop trying to fight against the hand of

  389. God and just let the hand of God lead

  390. you.

  391. And so we take this to heart.

  392. It's not about adding him to a checklist

  393. or giving him the first five minutes of

  394. our day. It's about letting him be the

  395. first one we turn to in every situation.

  396. Life went hard. Who did we turn to? Life

  397. got difficult. Where did we go? We

  398. achieved a little bit of success in

  399. life. Who did we look to? Who got the

  400. credit? Whose name did we call on when

  401. we were in need? Where was our first go?

  402. Who is our first source of strength and

  403. peace in every aspect of life no matter?

  404. Who is the person that we turn to?

  405. Because when Jesus is first,

  406. everything else finds its rightful

  407. place. And we realize that he's not just

  408. part of our life. He's not just a piece

  409. of the story that is our life. He is our

  410. life. He is our source of life.

  411. And we realize that he's our first love.

  412. He's our first refuge.

  413. He's our first response.

  414. And that just begins to scratch the

  415. surface of the beauty that is our Lord

  416. and Savior Jesus.

  417. Because if he's first in all creation,

  418. let's see how he's first in his church

  419. and also in the resurrection. Because

  420. Paul begins to point to that as well. He

  421. says, "Not only is he first in creation,

  422. but he's first in the church."

  423. And Paul is about to show us how Jesus

  424. supremacy changes not just the universe,

  425. not just every aspect of our life, but

  426. even down to the finest details of the

  427. very people and the very heart of who we

  428. are.

  429. And so, let's keep walking through this.

  430. Let's keep navigating through this.

  431. Let's keep understanding what Paul is

  432. pointing us to here. And that's the next

  433. incredible thing that we understand is

  434. if we truly understand that Jesus is

  435. first

  436. and we begin to place him first in

  437. everything and everything begins to fall

  438. into line and to fall into place, we

  439. begin to understand that Jesus is

  440. supreme.

  441. Jesus has a certain supremacy about him

  442. that no other thing has.

  443. And so as we keep walking through Paul's

  444. words, he shifts our eyes from creation

  445. to something even more personal,

  446. the church.

  447. It's almost like Paul is saying, if you

  448. think Jesus authority over creation is

  449. stunning, if you think that's cool,

  450. wait until you see what he does with his

  451. very own people. Wait until you see what

  452. he does with the people he was willing

  453. to lay his life down for. The people he

  454. was willing to give up heaven for

  455. because he gives us this beautiful

  456. picture. Jesus is the head of the body

  457. that is the church. And we see this in

  458. verse 18 because he says, "And he is the

  459. head of the body, the church. He is the

  460. beginning, the firstborn from the dead,

  461. that in everything he might be

  462. preeeminent."

  463. So what does this mean to us? What does

  464. this tell us? It means that Jesus and

  465. God and the Trinity are not just hanging

  466. out from a distance just watching what's

  467. going on. They are up close. They are

  468. personal. They are intimate. It is an

  469. organic relationship. It is something

  470. that is so entwined into every fiber of

  471. our being. This is the same God who

  472. said, "I knit you together in your mo

  473. mother's womb. I formed your inward

  474. hearts. You have been beautifully and

  475. wonderfully made. I know every detail

  476. down to the hairs of your head. And you

  477. mean to tell me that I'm somehow not big

  478. enough to handle your problems? That I'm

  479. not somehow supreme enough to rule and

  480. to reign over your life? That you

  481. somehow know better than me. He's not

  482. distant. He's not uninvolved. He's not

  483. taking a step back. And if we feel

  484. distant from God, it's us that moved.

  485. God stays stationary. God stays put. It

  486. is us that moves from him.

  487. And a lot of times we feel like God's

  488. not really speaking to us anymore or we

  489. can't really hear hear his voice. Well,

  490. here's the thing. You don't have to

  491. shout to the person you're sitting next

  492. to.

  493. You just got to open your ears and

  494. listen.

  495. He's the one who gives us direction, who

  496. gives us our purpose, who gives us life

  497. itself.

  498. And it is a life that has meaning. And

  499. it is a life that is everlasting.

  500. Think about that because if Jesus is the

  501. head then that means that we are meant

  502. to be connected. We are meant to be

  503. engaged. We are meant to respond

  504. to him.

  505. He is the one who leads us forward.

  506. But a lot of us too like to think that

  507. this is somehow a passive relationship

  508. like it somehow just occasional. It's

  509. only when we feel like it. It's only

  510. when we want to. It isn't occasional.

  511. This relationship is active. It's

  512. vibrant. And participation in the life

  513. of his church is not just something

  514. that's recommended. It's something that

  515. is commanded.

  516. It means serving, loving, showing up,

  517. being involved.

  518. Not because the church needs warm

  519. bodies. That's not why we push serving

  520. and getting engaged and being involved

  521. in some sort of ministry. That's not the

  522. whole purpose behind it. It's not so we

  523. can just have warm bodies to fill in

  524. ministry so we can get more people.

  525. No, it's because Jesus is calling us to

  526. be part of his living breathing body on

  527. this earth. And if we are not connected

  528. to the head, if we are not connected to

  529. what Jesus is doing through the life and

  530. through the body of his church, then

  531. everything else falls flat

  532. because there is no purpose. There is no

  533. meaning. We are just consuming

  534. and never giving.

  535. But then Paul gives us this phrase that

  536. I think carries even more weight than

  537. what we realize

  538. because not only does he say that he is

  539. the head of the church, but then Paul

  540. takes it a step further and he says that

  541. he is the firstborn from the dead.

  542. He's already told us that Jesus is the

  543. firstborn of creation. meaning he holds

  544. authority over everything that has ever

  545. existed.

  546. He holds that authority. But now Paul

  547. shows us that Jesus isn't just the first

  548. over the world we can see. He is first

  549. over the world that we cannot see.

  550. Jesus is the first to rise from the

  551. dead,

  552. the first to step out of the grave in a

  553. resurrected body, and the first to walk

  554. in a new life that will never perish

  555. again.

  556. Jesus was the first.

  557. And what that means is breathtaking.

  558. Think about that for a second.

  559. He rules not only over creation, but

  560. life and death itself. Jesus has the

  561. final say.

  562. He's the one who spoke the universe into

  563. existence. And now he stands as the Lord

  564. over life and death. There is no realm,

  565. heaven, earth, death itself, where Jesus

  566. is not first and is not reigning supreme

  567. as the sovereign ruler.

  568. And because he's that firstborn, he

  569. leads us the way into the new creation

  570. that we are invited to now live in and

  571. dwell within. And this is where it

  572. becomes extremely personal again

  573. because if Jesus has authority over

  574. creation and and if Jesus has authority

  575. over the church and if Jesus has

  576. authority over the graves itself then he

  577. deserves authority over us over our

  578. hearts over our decisions over our

  579. desires over the way that we live. Jesus

  580. isn't meant to be a weakened addition to

  581. our schedule.

  582. It's not meant for us to just come in

  583. here to occupy a seat to hear a good

  584. message, feel good about ourselves, then

  585. go out, have lunch, and forget

  586. everything that we ever learned.

  587. Never apply it. Never put it into

  588. application. never put any aspect of it

  589. to where we are so excited and filled up

  590. with the spirit to where when we walk

  591. into our businesses or in our schools or

  592. wherever we go on a Monday morning and

  593. are so excited and just so jumping for

  594. joy that the spirit of the Lord just

  595. flows forth from us and we can't help

  596. but tell everybody about the firstborn

  597. from the dead, the firstborn from

  598. creation, Jesus the Messiah. We are so

  599. excited to tell him. No, instead what we

  600. do is we come in here, we sit down, we

  601. get comfortable, we get consumed,

  602. we become spiritual glutton, we hit that

  603. door and it never makes anywhere else.

  604. But what we forget is the moment that we

  605. hit the door is the moment that the work

  606. begins.

  607. The work doesn't just happen here. It

  608. happens everywhere outside of here. It

  609. is not bound by these four walls. The

  610. church doesn't exist because it's a

  611. structure. The church exists because

  612. it's a person.

  613. He's not some spiritual accessory that

  614. you get to hold on to on your little God

  615. chain.

  616. He's meant to be the center of who we

  617. are. The one seated on the throne of our

  618. hearts.

  619. And that's a question that we have to

  620. ask ourselves. What is seated on the

  621. throne of my life? What is seated on the

  622. throne of my heart? Who is first in

  623. everything I do?

  624. Because it's through this reflection

  625. that we fulfill our calling and we begin

  626. to make him known to the far corners of

  627. the earth in every capacity of our lives

  628. in every aspect.

  629. Whether it's an employee, whether it's a

  630. parent, whether it's a student, whether

  631. it's a neighbor, we must do it all as

  632. unto the Lord. Work heartily as if doing

  633. unto the Lord. Do everything you do as

  634. if you are doing it for Jesus alone

  635. because that is our ministry. That is

  636. our purpose. That is our calling. It may

  637. not be vocational ministry, but you have

  638. been called to a ministry.

  639. Whether you're a teacher, whether you're

  640. a welder, whether you're a plant

  641. operator, whether you work in a in an

  642. office, that is your ministry. That is

  643. your flock. SHEPHERD IT WELL and lead

  644. and love them well. Show them and point

  645. them to the one true God. Show them and

  646. point them to Jesus.

  647. Matter of fact,

  648. yesterday was just an even greater

  649. reminder of that.

  650. Yesterday, we got to celebrate the life

  651. of a wonderful, wonderful woman.

  652. And we heard countless story after story

  653. after story

  654. of just how she fought the good fight.

  655. She did well. She walked with purpose.

  656. And all she did was love the people

  657. around her.

  658. She may not have been the most

  659. biblically minded person. She was sharp

  660. when it came to the Bible, though.

  661. But that's what I'm saying is you don't

  662. have to be full of biblical knowledge.

  663. You just got to be full of the Lord. You

  664. got to be full spirit. And you got to be

  665. willing to walk in that purpose that he

  666. has given you. Because all that she did

  667. was love people and invite them to

  668. church. And we heard story after story

  669. after story of encounter after encounter

  670. of people coming to know the Lord, of

  671. people walking into ministry, of people

  672. becoming pastors, of people just

  673. genuinely feeling the call and the tug

  674. and feeling like now they were home,

  675. that they became a part of a bigger

  676. family.

  677. And I think every single one of us in

  678. here can relate to that because

  679. personally, that's my story.

  680. My story began

  681. because a sweet apartment manager saw it

  682. within me to say, "I'm going to invite

  683. that kid to church.

  684. I'm going to get him. He's going to come

  685. and I'm going to love him as much as I

  686. can. I know he's rough around the edges.

  687. I know he's hostile to the gospel, but I

  688. know that he's going to he's going to

  689. show up one day and the Lord's going to

  690. do a work and I'm going to be faithful

  691. to it."

  692. And so every week I'd go in there. She'd

  693. keep saying, "Hey, come join us. Come

  694. join us. come join us. So finally I did

  695. and it was because she understood the

  696. fact that it is not about us anymore. It

  697. is about pointing all back to the work

  698. and the glory of the Lord. It is all

  699. about pointing back to the fact that

  700. there is a firstborn of creation. One

  701. who reigns supreme. One who has all

  702. authority. One who can silence every

  703. fear. Who can calm every storm. who can

  704. bring peace into the most turbulent of

  705. situations.

  706. And so when we begin to work heartily as

  707. if for the Lord, when we begin to

  708. understand that our life is no longer

  709. about us, but rather about pointing back

  710. to who Christ is and what Christ did for

  711. us, that indwelling spirit begins to

  712. glow so brightly that it begins to just

  713. flourish from every facet of our life.

  714. And what begins to happen that as people

  715. begin to see us working as if working

  716. unto the Lord, they can't help but stop

  717. and stare and LOOK AND PROCLAIM, "ALL

  718. HAIL, King Jesus, that is re who reigns

  719. supreme in the life of that person that

  720. stands before me." And I praise God that

  721. we continue to get that opportunity to

  722. go out and to be the flawed, broken

  723. vessel that we are, but yet get to

  724. proclaim a perfect and holy God. GOD WHO

  725. SAW US IN THE MUCK and mire and said,

  726. "You're worth it.

  727. >> I'll call you out. I'll redeem you

  728. because I love you."

  729. And so, let us live with that truth at

  730. the forefront. Let us serve with pure

  731. hearts and let every aspect be a

  732. reflection of his glory.

  733. Because when we truly understand that

  734. Jesus is first, begin to understand how

  735. Jesus is supreme,

  736. we get to the final aspect of what Paul

  737. points us to.

  738. That's that Jesus is enough.

  739. There's nothing else we got to add to

  740. it. There's nothing else that we've got

  741. to somehow do on our end to make it

  742. right.

  743. Jesus is enough.

  744. Take a moment to just let your heart

  745. experience that truth.

  746. Just let it think and marinate for just

  747. a second. Jesus is enough. Stop trying.

  748. Stop fighting. Stop pressing back. Stop

  749. thinking that somehow you've got to

  750. clean your life up. You've got to

  751. straighten everything else out. You've

  752. got to get everything taken care of and

  753. make sure that you look holy and

  754. spotless and blameless to go before a

  755. king. No. understand that Jesus is

  756. enough. Jesus's work is finished. We've

  757. just got to step into it now.

  758. Because as Paul continues, he opens our

  759. eyes to a truth so rich

  760. that you can't help but slow down and

  761. want to just breathe it in over and over

  762. and over again. Because look at the

  763. beautiful truth that lays in verse 19.

  764. For in him all the fullness of God was

  765. pleased to dwell.

  766. Think about that. The fullness of God

  767. was pleased to dwell within him.

  768. And I love that word dwell. And I love

  769. how Pastor Roland talked about how Jesus

  770. tabernac was the tabernacle.

  771. Jesus tabernacle was the tabernacle of

  772. God with us. Jesus is now the image of

  773. the invisible God. Every attribute of

  774. God, every bit of his holiness, his

  775. mercy, his authority, his power

  776. dwells in Christ.

  777. Jesus isn't just part of God's plan.

  778. Jesus is God's fullness walking among

  779. us.

  780. Heaven wrapped itself in humanity,

  781. not as a glimpse, but as the fullness of

  782. divine presence stepping into our world.

  783. And from that fullness, what comes?

  784. Reconciliation.

  785. Something so beautiful.

  786. Because verse 20 tells us that God is

  787. making peace.

  788. Because it says that and through him to

  789. reconcile to himself all things whether

  790. on earth or in heaven making peace by

  791. the blood of his cross.

  792. through the blood of his cross.

  793. Let's think about that for a second.

  794. Symbol that was meant to be the most

  795. brutal symbol of death. A symbol that to

  796. a world marked defeat, but to our Lord

  797. marked victory.

  798. It becomes the place where God writes a

  799. peace treaty with humanity.

  800. But he doesn't do it because we earned

  801. it. He doesn't do it because somehow

  802. we're good enough now. Not because we

  803. reached up to him and said, "Lord, save

  804. us."

  805. But rather because Christ reached down

  806. to us and said, "No, I'll save them.

  807. I'll stand in the place. I'll stand in

  808. the gap. I'll stand where they can't

  809. stand. And I'll be the one that they

  810. could never be to achieve the aspect and

  811. the area that they will never be able to

  812. attain all for them.

  813. That's grace.

  814. That's a gift.

  815. That's love

  816. moving first.

  817. But then Paul gives us something even

  818. more incredibly personal in verse 21 and

  819. 22.

  820. He gives us this gospel timeline where

  821. he says, "And you,"

  822. I love transitions within the text. If

  823. any if any of you know and you've ever

  824. been here on a Wednesday night and you

  825. hear my students, I love the word but in

  826. the Bible

  827. cuz anytime you see the word but, it's

  828. usually talking about here's where

  829. you've messed up, but here's where God

  830. is great. Here's where you've fallen

  831. short, but here's where God picked up

  832. the pieces. And that's exactly what Paul

  833. is doing. Paul is talking all the way

  834. through this and he's saying, "Look at

  835. the supremacy of Christ. Look at the

  836. power. Look at the aspect. Look at every

  837. fiber of his being. And now there's you.

  838. Now we get to the point we call you out.

  839. But it's past tense.

  840. He says, "And you who once were

  841. alienated

  842. and hostile in mind doing evil deeds."

  843. You were alienated.

  844. We were hostile.

  845. and we were evil towards God. In other

  846. words, no aspect of us was neutral in

  847. this whole problem.

  848. We weren't spiritually confused. We

  849. weren't just somehow taken astray.

  850. No, we had full separation from God. We

  851. inwardly were resistant to him.

  852. We outwardly were walking away from him.

  853. That's who we were.

  854. But then comes the present

  855. because then we get to verse 22

  856. where now we step into that present

  857. tense.

  858. You were once alienated. You were once

  859. hostile in mind. You were once doing

  860. evil deeds. But he has now

  861. reconciled in his body of flesh by his

  862. death in order to present you holy and

  863. blameless

  864. through his body. Through his death,

  865. through that blood that speaks a better

  866. word than our guilt, we are brought

  867. near. The hostility is over, the

  868. distance is closed, the chasm has been

  869. filled, the separation is healed, and

  870. peace has been made. And then Paul lifts

  871. our eyes to the future.

  872. God is presenting us and will present us

  873. as holy, blameless, and above reproach

  874. all through the work of his son Jesus.

  875. But I want you to not miss out on this

  876. truth either because a lot of times this

  877. is where we like to rest. We like to get

  878. to the what we think is the finish line

  879. of salvation, which is giving and

  880. turning our life over to Christ. And we

  881. think, "Okay, my ticket to heaven's been

  882. punched. I'm good now. I don't need to

  883. do any other aspect. I don't need to do

  884. anything else. All I got to do is show

  885. up to church on Sunday, carry a Bible

  886. around occasionally, memorize John 3:16,

    John 3:16

  887. and say a prayer every time I think

  888. about it."

  889. But we miss out on so much because we

  890. miss out on the true sacrificial aspect

  891. that is going on here. This is not just

  892. words on a page. This is a sacrifice

  893. being written before us. Words used to

  894. describe offerings set apart for God.

  895. It's like Paul is saying, "Your past

  896. doesn't define you, but Jesus sacrifice

  897. does."

  898. Because of the mercy shown at the cross,

  899. we now live as living sacrifices

  900. ourselves,

  901. offering our lives to God, not out of

  902. obligation,

  903. but out of gratitude, out of a sense of

  904. awe and wonder, out of a sense of love.

  905. And when you follow that time to time

  906. timeline from who we were to who we are

  907. to who we will be, it all leads to one

  908. clear conclusion.

  909. Jesus is enough.

  910. We don't have to add anything to his

  911. finished work. We don't need Jesus plus

  912. some spiritual experience. We don't need

  913. Jesus plus rules. We don't need Jesus

  914. plus your self-effort plus your

  915. behavioral modifications.

  916. The fullness of God was pleased to dwell

  917. within him and the fullness of f

  918. salvation flows forth from him. In

  919. Christ, we are made whole. In Christ,

  920. the gap is closed. In Christ, we lack

  921. nothing.

  922. So what do we do now?

  923. Now we walk forward as living

  924. testimonies of that reconciliation. Our

  925. lives become the loud evidence that the

  926. gospel truly does transform a broken

  927. heart. That the gospel truly does

  928. transform a broken mind. That the gospel

  929. truly does heal the hurt.

  930. Because when we love, when we forgive,

  931. when we serve, when we lay ourselves

  932. down as living sacrifices,

  933. we are proclaiming with every fiber of

  934. our life that Christ is sufficient.

  935. And this is how we carry the message of

  936. Jesus into a world that is in desperate

  937. need of it. So, how do we do it? How do

  938. we begin to go and to live on mission?

  939. How do we begin to go and to walk in

  940. this truth that has been given to us?

  941. Well, it's simple.

  942. By living as people who truly believe

  943. that Jesus is enough,

  944. and that through him all things can be

  945. made new.

  946. That no one is too far gone, that no one

  947. is outside the reach of the gospel. That

  948. no one is unredeemable.

  949. Everyone can have an encounter with

  950. Christ. But the question is, is that

  951. encounter going to come by you living

  952. that transformation?

  953. By you being that walking, talking

  954. example.

  955. There was a truth that was shared with

  956. me when I first came to know and I'm

  957. sure many of you have heard it.

  958. And it was told to me like this. You may

  959. be the only Bible that someone may ever

  960. read. So, make sure it's the truth.

  961. >> Make sure it's the real gospel. And make

  962. sure it's a gospel that points their

  963. hearts and minds to Jesus, not to you.

  964. Because Paul has shown us that Jesus is

  965. bigger and more beautiful than we often

  966. ever allow ourselves to truly see.

  967. He is a Jesus who is first over all of

  968. creation. A Jesus who is supreme over

  969. his church and over resurrection and

  970. over life. A Jesus who is enough to

  971. reconcile us, to restore us, to make us

  972. new.

  973. This is the Jesus who holds all things

  974. together, including our lives, including

  975. every aspect, including every detail.

  976. Jesus is holding it together.

  977. But now we stand at a place where

  978. we must call our hearts to a response.

  979. Because if Jesus truly is first and

  980. Jesus truly is supreme and Jesus truly

  981. is enough, then he deserves our whole

  982. hearts. Not just the peace that we have

  983. reserved, not just the bits that we have

  984. left over, but he deserves every fiber

  985. of it.

  986. He deserves our trust. He deserves our

  987. surrender.

  988. And I simply want to invite you to open

  989. your heart to him this morning.

  990. Because maybe you need to say, "Jesus,

  991. be first in my life."

  992. Maybe you need to say, "Jesus, take your

  993. rightful place. Lead me, guide me, shape

  994. me, mold me into the person you have

  995. called me to be."

  996. Or maybe today you just need to say,

  997. "Jesus,

  998. you're enough for me. I don't need

  999. anything else as long as I have you.

  1000. I don't need another materialistic item

1001. as long as I have my mansion that is

  1002. prepared for me."

1003. >> Lord, I don't need anything else as long

1004. as I have you and as long as I have your

  1005. church.

1006. Wherever you are, I want you to

1007. understand that God meets you right

  1008. there.

1009. You don't have to go to him. You don't

1010. have to somehow straighten things up.

1011. You don't have to tidy up the house so

1012. he can come in. No, God comes into your

1013. house and he cleans it up for you. He

1014. does the work. You just got to let him

1015. do what only he can do.

1016. And so as we take a moment here in just

1017. a second and as we pray,

1018. just let the Jesus that Paul has lifted

1019. before us be the Jesus that we lift our

  1020. lives to.

1021. Would you join me as we pray?

1022. Father God, we just praise you so much

1023. for this morning. Lord, we just Lord, we

1024. are just in awe of your son, Jesus.

1025. Lord, we are just in awe of the fact

1026. that you would call us, Lord, that you

1027. would send such a precious gift to come

1028. in some of the most in one of the most

  1029. humble ways,

1030. Lord, to come as a baby

1031. who's born in the most humblest of

  1032. places in a manger

1033. to show us the greatest gift that we

1034. could have ever given, Lord, which is

1035. life through you, Lord. to be reconciled

1036. to you, Lord, to give your son up as the

1037. firstborn of creation, to make peace

1038. through the blood of his cross.

1039. Lord, may we lean into that truth, Lord.

1040. May we lean into the fact that you are

  1041. enough,

1042. Lord. That we don't need a spiritual

1043. experience, Lord. That we don't need

1044. another spiritual high, but Lord, we

  1045. just need you.

1046. Lord, we just need your son. Lord, may

1047. you fixate our gaze on him. And Lord,

1048. may our life continue and always be a

  1049. reflection

1050. of the transformational work that took

  1051. place.

1052. Lord, may we continue to point others to

  1053. you.

1054. Lord, may we feel so equipped and so

1055. overflowing with the spirit that the

1056. moment as soon as we hit the doors this

1057. morning, we can't wait to tell everybody

1058. about the greatest gift this world has

  1059. ever received.

1060. Lord, may you fill us with that power.

1061. Lord, I'm praying that you do a work

  1062. this morning.

1063. Lord, I'm praying that you transform

1064. hearts and minds. Lord, I love you. I

1065. thank you. It's your name we pray. Amen.
