  1. So, I have some

  2. holy anticipation this morning. And so,

  3. it it's caused me to feel a little bit

  4. overwhelmed. And so, if I if I seem

  5. short of breath, that that's the reason.

  6. It was mentioned earlier how we are in a

  7. 21-day

  8. um fast and prayer initiative. And and

  9. that's not just for the sake of doing

  10. it. My my heart behind encouraging and

  11. challenging the church to engage in

  12. prayer over the next 21 days is that we

  13. would be a people of God united in

  14. compassion for God. uh broken by

  15. whatever it is that maybe you're dealing

  16. with personally, broken by the sin in

  17. your life, broken by the chaos in this

  18. world, and that we would unite under the

  19. banner of Christ and under the duty of

  20. prayer to lift up the name of Jesus for

  21. the sake men of our marriage, for the

  22. sake of our families, for the sake of

  23. our community, and and overall for the

  24. sake of the world. Every movement of God

  25. finds its roots in the people of God

  26. praying that God would move mightily,

  27. that God would move gloriously and and

  28. majestically. And so over the next

  29. couple of weeks, when we challenge you

  30. guys to pray, when when I'm being

  31. challenged to pray myself, it's not just

  32. so that we would fall to our knees and

  33. pray for our personal bubble, for our

  34. personal environment. That's absolutely

  35. part of it. But that we would have a

  36. global

  37. missionwide kingdom expanding

  38. perspective on what prayer does.

  39. And so when I'm praying and and you're

  40. praying and our brothers and sisters

  41. across town are praying and Christians

  42. around the world are praying,

  43. God moves and and God works and God

  44. acts. And of course, God doesn't need us

  45. to do what God does. But here's the

  46. beauty of God's grace. He invites lowly

  47. sinners like you and I that so that when

  48. we call upon his name, he invites us

  49. into

  50. his moving, his working, his redeeming,

  51. and his plan for rescue. And what a

  52. privilege that is. And often times, if

  53. you're anything like me, you don't get

  54. it right. You fail and and you fall

  55. short and and you miss the mark. But our

  56. God is so gracious and our God is so

  57. holy and our God is so loving that that

  58. he invites us back in.

  59. Not because there's any good in us.

  60. We're going to dive into the text here

  61. in just a moment and realize that that

  62. there is no one who does good. Not one.

  63. But there is one who is always good and

  64. his name is Jesus.

  65. And he invites us into life with him. He

  66. invites us into relationship with him.

  67. and and my hope and my prayer and and

  68. and I'm speaking specifically to to

  69. those of us in the room this morning

  70. who have never made a profession of

  71. faith.

  72. I I pray that today that that your heart

  73. is rocked by the truth of the gospel

  74. and that you would be so

  75. disgusted

  76. by the sin in your life

  77. that you would gaze upon the beauty of

  78. the gospel

  79. and take hold of it

  80. because you realize through the

  81. indwelling power of the spirit that

  82. without it you remain eternally lost.

  83. This past Thursday,

  84. we had open prayer. We're praying every

  85. Thursday during these 21 days of prayer

  86. and fasting and and there's no agenda on

  87. Thursday night. There's no service

  88. order. It it just it's an open building

  89. for you to come and have some

  90. uninterrupted prayer time. That's often

  91. difficult. Though prayer is easily

  92. accessible to us, prayer can often be

  93. difficult particularly in Western

  94. culture and particularly in our busy

  95. lives. And so I thought it would be

  96. fitting during these 21 days to provide

  97. an opportunity for us, even if it's just

  98. for an hour for us to come into this

  99. building and have some uninterrupted

  100. prayer time. And so let me tell you why

  101. you need to be praying.

  102. Because it's it's the catalyst by which

  103. our minds, our ears, and our hearts are

  104. open to hear from the Lord. Did you know

  105. prayer is not just you talking to God?

  106. It's you hitting the pause button in

  107. your life to hear from the Lord. And so

  108. this past Thursday, we had a couple of

  109. people here in the worship center. I I

  110. sat in a chair in the lobby. I like to

  111. journal. It's um it's how I express what

  112. what what what's happening up here and

  113. and and how God is dealing with me here.

  114. I put it to pen and paper and um my wife

  115. typically is the only one who who hears

  116. what I write in here. But I was moved on

  117. Thursday to write this for us. This is

  118. this is our this is not my prayer. This

  119. is our prayer. I pray that it's our our

  120. prayer. Here's what I wrote Thursday

  121. night. I said, 'Lord,

  122. how do we become a praying people?

  123. How do we become a faithful people?

  124. How can we seek your face more?

  125. How can we like Moses desire more and

  126. more to see your face?

  127. Lord, teach us to be a people of prayer.

  128. The kind of prayer that makes our knees

  129. callous.

  130. The white knuckle grip desperate plea

  131. kind of prayer.

  132. Am I desperate enough?

  133. Is my church desperate enough?

  134. How can we long for you more?

  135. Break us, Lord.

  136. Break our hearts for what breaks yours.

  137. Break our pride, our selfishness, our

  138. disregard for sin.

  139. Like Moses, I want us to be a people who

  140. declare passionately and boldly, "Unless

  141. you go with us, Lord, we will not depart

  142. from here."

  143. Shake our idols,

  144. shake our comfort, shake our worldly

  145. confidence, and bring us to dependence

  146. on you.

  147. Open our eyes and give us a heart that

  148. craves and lips that declare I want more

  149. of you.

  150. Sometimes

  151. please Jesus is the only prayer I can

  152. muster.

  153. Two words, but I believe God knows all

  154. the words they mean.

  155. So tonight I pray, please Lord, not as a

  156. bargaining plea, but with a submissive

  157. heart.

  158. Please bless our church. Please bless

  159. our community. Please bless my home, my

  160. family, my ministry, my marriage, my

  161. work, my enemies, my neighbors. Please,

  162. Lord, please.

  163. Thank you, Jesus, for the strength you

  164. provide and the mercies that are new

  165. every morning.

  166. I am nothing without you. And I am often

  167. in awe how you've taken a sinner like me

  168. and have blessed me like you have. I

  169. don't deserve any of it. And I imagine

  170. you now watching as I write this, giving

  171. me a nudge to remind me of your grace,

  172. your mercy, your compassion, and how

  173. despite my sin, you still call me your

  174. own. I am grateful for salvation and how

  175. your grace knows no bounds.

  176. My sin, though great, is washed away by

  177. your grace that is infinitely greater.

  178. My tears are wiped away. I don't need to

  179. cry over my sin. I don't need to be led

  180. by it because my sin is no longer mine

  181. to bear. Christ has taken it for me.

  182. He's bled. He's paid the price for it

  183. and he has overcome it. He did that for

  184. me. He did that for us, church. Thank

  185. you, Jesus.

  186. It's my prayer for us.

  187. And it's my hope and it's my desire that

  188. we would be a people who compassionately

  189. before Jesus

  190. in repentance of sin and in greater

  191. desire to be used by him. None of us

  192. are unqualified

  193. when we have been qualified by Christ

  194. himself.

  195. when he's called you and I to step out

  196. of death and sin and be transformed by

  197. life eternal. I I share all of that to

  198. share what what we're going to be

  199. looking at this morning as we turn to

  200. Romans chapter 3. If you have a Bible,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  201. meet me in Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  202. We're going to begin in verse 9 and make

  203. our way through verse 26. It's a lengthy

  204. passage, but it's packed with so much

  205. theological truth

  206. and a call to live a transformed

  207. life.

  208. God doesn't work in us because of us. He

  209. works in us despite us.

  210. Despite the sin that we so passionately

  211. hold on to, despite the rebellion that

  212. we are set against, despite the

  213. disobedience. And what I want to look at

  214. this morning is a deep dive into the

  215. text of of what it means to understand

  216. the heinous nature of the sin that often

  217. defines our life.

  218. Last week we looked at what it means to

  219. think biblically about God.

  220. Because you can't grow in God. You can't

  221. pursue God. You can't mature with and

  222. through God if you don't even know who

  223. God is. And so many people have an idea

  224. of who they think God is, but when

  225. compared to the tr the truth of

  226. scripture

  227. completely falls apart.

  228. And so once we begin to think biblically

  229. and and truthfully about who God is,

  230. then we can step into every other realm

  231. of life. Which is why Jesus in Matthew

    Matthew 6:33

  232. 6:33 tells us this that we are to seek

  233. first God's kingdom and his

  234. righteousness

  235. and then everything else will be added

  236. to us.

  237. It's when God is given his proper place.

  238. It's when we understand the nature of

  239. obedience to the call of God in our

  240. life. when we understand the depth of

  241. our sin and how it's an affront to God's

  242. holiness.

  243. And so I was overwhelmed

  244. as I began to study and and think about

  245. the sin in my own life

  246. and the chaos and the sin in the world

  247. around us.

  248. What scares me the most

  249. or what concerns me the most

  250. is not the sinner who sins.

  251. It's not the one who openly refuses to

  252. place faith in Jesus. They don't know

  253. any other way. That's their nature to

  254. sin. What concerns me and scares me more

  255. is the sin that is so prevalent in the

  256. life of people who say they're followers

  257. of Jesus.

  258. think

  259. that because of this lack of

  260. understanding of what sin really is and

  261. what sin truly does to people.

  262. We look at sin just like we would look

  263. at any other inconvenience.

  264. It might be a bump in the road. It it

  265. might put me off course, but nothing

  266. more than that. And I want you to know

  267. that that sin is an agent that is set

  268. out to kill you.

  269. Sin wants to destroy you.

  270. It wants to harm your marriage. It wants

  271. to harm your family. It wants to harm

  272. your self perspective. Sin has no desire

  273. for your good.

  274. And often when we think about what takes

  275. place in our sinning, there's a phrase

  276. that I've often heard that doesn't

  277. really sit well sit well with people. Is

  278. this the devil is influencing you.

  279. The devil is using you.

  280. And maybe for someone here today who

  281. doesn't know Jesus, the devil and his

  282. demons are in you.

  283. It's shocking to often hear that.

  284. But when we engage in sin and we openly

  285. receive it and we openly participate in

  286. it, make no mistake, the devil and his

  287. demons are using

  288. you.

  289. And so what we need to do as believers

  290. is we need to frame our minds, our

  291. hearts and our spirit around the truth

  292. of God

  293. and to understand that sin has one

  294. purpose which is to steal, kill, and

  295. destroy. This is what Jesus warns us of

  296. in John's gospel chapter 10. But you

  297. know what's beautiful about the rest of

  298. that sentence? Jesus says, "The enemy,

  299. the devil, that thief, he's come to

  300. steal, kill, and destroy. But I

  301. have come that you may have life,

  302. abundant

  303. >> life."

  304. Jesus contrasts the sin of this world

  305. that brings nothing more but death,

  306. decay, and rot, and puts you at war with

  307. the holiness of God. And he lines it up

  308. against who he is, his nature, his

  309. character.

  310. If you remember that passage in John

    John 10 chapter mention

  311. chapter 10, Jesus is talking about how

  312. the sheep enter into the gate,

  313. where the shepherd protects, where the

  314. shepherd provides, where the shepherd

  315. molds and forms and builds up.

  316. And if we hadn't understood it at that

  317. point in John's gospel, Jesus brings

  318. clarity and he says, "I am the gate.

  319. I am the good shepherd and through me

  320. you enter in. But as long as you give

  321. yourself over to sin, you rob yourself

  322. of the life I've destined you for. And

  323. so if you're an unbeliever,

  324. your sin is robbing you from eternal

  325. life.

  326. Your sin is robbing you from life in

  327. God's kingdom the moment you draw your

  328. last breath. And if you're a believer in

  329. here who is engaged in habitual sin, you

  330. are robbing yourself of the blessed life

  331. God has called you to.

  332. And we can be honest in a place like

  333. this. A lot of the issues that we face

  334. in this life are a result of our own

  335. rebellion against God because we refuse

  336. to call the very thing in our life that

  337. cripples us, that is killing us, the sin

  338. that it is.

  339. I began to think

  340. about why we don't take sin seriously.

  341. And I think it's because we don't truly

  342. understand that sin is set out to kill

  343. us.

  344. Men in the room, someone walked through

  345. your door

  346. into your living room where your family

  347. was enjoying time together. And they

  348. were set on killing you. And not only

  349. killing you, they were set on destroying

  350. every generation that would come after

  351. you. You would do everything in your

  352. power to stop that man.

  353. to say, "No, that ain't happening here."

  354. And yet, we don't do that with our sin.

  355. We treat it as a casual relationship

  356. where I'll embrace it when I'm having

  357. this desire to feel good,

  358. where I'll turn to it when life isn't

  359. working out.

  360. But you can't have, hear me now, you

  361. can't have an intimate relationship with

  362. Jesus and be growing in your love for

  363. him if you refuse to kill the sin in

  364. your life. Because faith and sin, they

  365. can't cohabitate. It just doesn't work.

  366. And so until we understand the depth of

  367. our sin, here's what I want us to know.

  368. We'll never fully appreciate the beauty

  369. of salvation. So, Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  370. right here, beginning in verse

  371. 9,

  372. here's what the Apostle Paul writes.

  373. What then?

  374. Are we any better off? Not at all. For

  375. we have already charged that both Jews

  376. and Greeks are all under sin,

  377. as it is written. And I love this

  378. because Paul,

  379. he writes in Romans chapter 1 what the

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  380. gospel is. It's the power of God for

  381. anyone who believes. The power of God

  382. unto salvation for anyone who believes.

  383. And then he goes on, we did a whole

  384. sermon series over Romans chapter 1. He

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  385. goes on to then articulate

  386. why no one is safe because we rebel

  387. against God. We choose creation over

  388. creator. We exchange the truth of God

  389. for the lies of the world. And it's not

  390. because we're ignorant to who God is,

  391. but rather it's despite knowledge of

  392. God, despite knowledge of the gospel

  393. that we still choose the lies of this

  394. world.

  395. And then Paul gets into Romans chapter 2

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  396. and and he anticipates

  397. this rebuttal. He anticipates this

  398. response from the Jews who would say,

  399. "But aren't we God's chosen people?"

  400. I mean, doesn't salvation come through

  401. the Jews? Jesus was one of us, the

  402. prophet, the laws, the kings, the

  403. priests of the Old Testament. It all

  404. came through the Jewish line. We're

  405. God's chosen people. Which is why here

  406. in Romans chapter 3, Paul anticipating

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  407. this responds to it. Are we not better

  408. off? Not at all.

  409. For we have already charged that whether

  410. you are from the Jewish nation or you're

  411. from any other nation, you are still a

  412. sinner before the holy God of creation.

  413. And then he begins to appeal through the

  414. Old Testament. He'll quote Isaiah. He'll

  415. quote the book of Psalms. If if you have

  416. a Bible with with these particular um

  417. verses in bold font, it's because it's

  418. showing us that Paul is quoting or

  419. referencing something from the Old

  420. Testament. He says in verse 10, as it is

  421. written, there is no one righteous, not

  422. even one. There is no one who

  423. understands. There is no one who seeks

  424. God. All have turned away. All alike

  425. have become worthless. you and there's

  426. no worth or value in us.

  427. Now, this doesn't mean we can't build

  428. each other up. The scripture calls us to

  429. build one another up, encourage one

  430. another. This is talking about the

  431. foundation that we lay to build life on.

  432. Apart from the gospel, apart from

  433. salvation in Jesus, it's worthless. It

  434. crumbles. It's not sure. It's not

  435. steady. It falls apart. You cannot build

  436. your life on the very sin that you

  437. commit. You can't build a marriage on

  438. the sin that you commit. You can't build

  439. a family on the sin that you're

  440. committing. You can't build a business

  441. on the sin that you're committing. What

  442. you can build it on is salvation in

  443. Jesus. What you can build it on is faith

  444. in the gospel.

  445. That is what God desires for his people.

  446. There is no one who does what's good.

  447. Not even one. Verse 13, I love this.

  448. We're going to unpack this here in just

  449. a moment.

  450. Their throat is an open grave. Who's he

  451. talking about? You and me. Sinners.

  452. Who's a sinner in here? 100% of us.

  453. Their throat is an open grave. They

  454. deceive with their tongues. Viper's

  455. venom is under their lips. Oftentimes I

  456. like to personalize the scripture

  457. because it really helps me understand

  458. what God desires of me. So let me just

  459. read verse 13 this way. You'll you'll

  460. pick up what I'm what I'm saying here.

  461. And I want you to do the same thing.

  462. Roland's throat is an open grave.

  463. Roland deceives with his tongue.

  464. Viper's venom is under Roland's lips.

  465. Verse 14. Roland's mouth is full of

  466. cursing and bitterness.

  467. It's very easy to read ourselves outside

  468. of the scriptures and to think it

  469. doesn't apply to us.

  470. Yes. And amen. The scripture was written

  471. for a people during a specific time, but

  472. that doesn't excuse the word of God

  473. being truthful and calling us to

  474. transformation and application and

  475. obedience in our life. Verse 15, their

  476. feet are swift to shed blood. Ruin and

  477. wretchedness are in their paths, and the

  478. path of peace they have not known. There

  479. is no fear of God before their eyes.

  480. Now, we know that whatever the law says,

  481. it speaks to those who are subject to

  482. the law. This is important because the

  483. Jews were then appealing to the law.

  484. They were saying, "But we have the law.

  485. The law was given to us. And so, if I

  486. just follow the law, I'm good.

  487. If I just understand the the covenant

  488. that has been made with with generations

  489. before me, I'm good." And Paul brings

  490. clarity. He says, "No, we all have

  491. sinned.

  492. Let me tell you what the law is for.

  493. He says it speaks to those who are

  494. subject to the law so that every mouth

  495. may be shut and the whole world may

  496. become subject to God's judgment. No one

  497. escapes. There are no excuses. Verse 20.

  498. For no one will be justified in his

  499. sight by the works of the law. Let me

  500. just pause it real quick. This means you

  501. cannot you cannot and will not be

  502. justified by just being good.

  503. Goodness absent of Jesus is evil.

  504. Let me phrase it this way. We've said it

  505. this way several times before.

  506. Would you desire heaven if Jesus wasn't

  507. there?

  508. And the church answers no.

  509. Because heaven is not heaven if Jesus is

  510. not there.

  511. Heaven's a place of no more. Praise God

  512. for that. But all of that is an overflow

  513. from the son who is everpresent

  514. and glorified and loving and merciful.

  515. Goodness absence of Jesus is no good at

  516. all. How do we know this? Well, in the

  517. Old Testament,

  518. there was a prophet

  519. who was hearing

  520. from the crowds around him that if they

  521. followed the law, if they were good

  522. enough, then then they would be okay.

  523. But it was goodness absent faith.

  524. It meant nothing because it was not

  525. rooted in the gospel. It wasn't rooted

  526. on God. It wasn't centered on a greater

  527. desire to seek the Lord and to grow in

  528. him. And so he responds, "Your

  529. righteousness is as filthy rags.

  530. The best day of your life when you get

  531. it all right, if Jesus is absent from

  532. all of that, if there's no faith in the

  533. Lord, it's filthy before God." Why?

  534. Because it's rooted in a heart that is

  535. in rebellion against him.

  536. And so he continues in verse 20. No one

  537. will be justified in his sight by the

  538. works of the law because the knowledge

  539. of sin comes through the law. That's

  540. Bible talk of saying the law had a

  541. purpose and that purpose was to expose

  542. your sin.

  543. The Bible here is so that we would look

  544. at God's holy standard and we would

  545. understand I can't measure up to it.

  546. And that's not to shame us. That's not

  547. to guilt us. It's to invite us and draw

  548. us in to the one who can rescue us, to

  549. the one who can redeem us.

  550. And so he continues here in verse 21,

  551. but now

  552. apart from the law, the righteousness of

  553. God has been revealed, attested by the

  554. law and the prophets. The law and the

  555. prophets were this arrow pointing to the

  556. greater reality that God was going to

  557. send his son, the Messiah, the lamb of

  558. God, to take away the sins of the world.

  559. Verse 22, the righteousness of God is

  560. through faith in

  561. Jesus Christ.

  562. Through faith in Jesus Christ to all who

  563. believe, since there is no distinction.

  564. What does he mean no distinction? Jew or

  565. Greek, there's no distinction. Your

  566. faith before God is received by Christ.

  567. For all have sinned and fall short of

  568. the glory of God. They are justified

  569. freely by his grace through the

  570. redemption that is in Christ Jesus. I

  571. love how Paul doubles down. God

  572. presented him as the mercy seat by his

  573. blood. There's so much theology there,

  574. so much doctrine. I want to encourage

  575. you. Go back home verse 25. do a deep

  576. dive on what it means that Paul's

  577. referencing Christ as the mercy seat by

  578. his blood through faith to demonstrate

  579. his righteousness because in his

  580. restraint God passed over the sins

  581. previously committed. Now there's a

  582. reference to the Exodus here. Why did

  583. God pass over the sins previously

  584. committed? Through the blood of the

  585. lamb. How does God pass over your sin

  586. and my sin? Through the blood of the

  587. lamb. It has not changed. But we've seen

  588. the greater reality of who the lamb is.

  589. His name is Jesus Christ.

  590. God presented him verse 26 to

  591. demonstrate his righteousness at the

  592. present time so that he would be just

  593. and justify the one who has faith in

  594. Jesus. And all God's people said,

  595. >> Lord, bless your word. Holy Spirit, stir

  596. our hearts.

  597. It's incredible

  598. the truth,

  599. the conviction, and the accountability

  600. the Bible speaks into our life regarding

  601. the sin that we cling to. So, as always,

  602. here's here's what I want to do. I want

  603. us to look at some truths, some

  604. movements through the passage that Paul

  605. is presenting here, not just for then,

  606. but ones that that are absolutely

  607. relevant and applicable today when it

  608. comes to the sin in the world and the

  609. sin in our life. And here's what I want

  610. to challenge us with. If you're in here

  611. today and you have never placed faith in

  612. Jesus Christ,

  613. I sense that that perhaps the spirit is

  614. already working in you. The fact that

  615. that in God's sovereign plan for your

  616. life, you are here this morning if for

  617. no other reason than to say yes to Jesus

  618. Christ.

  619. Secondly, there are some of us here,

  620. whether we've been a Christian for 10

  621. minutes or we've been a Christian for 10

  622. to 20 years.

  623. Some of us may be battling with a sin

  624. that we have refused to let go of

  625. and one that we embrace

  626. and one that that perhaps whether it's

  627. through pride or whether it's through

  628. shame or whether it's through fear or

  629. guilt, we refuse to call it sin.

  630. and we approach it casually and we make

  631. excuses for it and and for whatever

  632. reason we think life's circumstances

  633. give us permission to engage in

  634. relationship with habitual sin.

  635. I want to challenge you take hold of it

  636. and put it to death. I think it was St.

  637. Augustine

  638. who said be killing your sin or your sin

  639. will be killing you.

  640. What Paul's doing here

  641. is he's not trying to make you feel bad

  642. about yourself.

  643. Does sin make us feel bad about

  644. ourselves? Yes, of course, when we

  645. understand what it truly is and the

  646. consequences that it truly brings.

  647. But what he's doing is he's telling us

  648. the truth about sin

  649. so that we just don't feel bad about it.

  650. we would gaze upon the beauty of the

  651. gospel and have our lives transformed.

  652. So, let's go back to the passage. Let's

  653. look at some some truths that we can

  654. draw out of it that I hope and I pray

  655. will change us from this moment forward.

  656. If you're taking notes, here's here's

  657. the first thing that we see. Sin is

  658. universal and it fers.

  659. I love how Paul is playing here.

  660. claim here that there is no one who is

  661. righteous. No one seeks God. What that

  662. means is that sin is not something that

  663. we stumble into. Often times that's the

  664. way we see it. Well, you know, the

  665. environment was was not one that I

  666. should have been in and so I just I just

  667. stumbled

  668. into it.

  669. And while the devil and his demons may

  670. take advantage of the situations that

  671. you purposefully put yourself in and

  672. refuse

  673. to remove from your life,

  674. what often happens

  675. is a sin that is birthed out of us is

  676. not because we stumbled into it, but

  677. more so it's because it's natural to us.

  678. Did you know that

  679. we are born with a sin nature? This is

  680. the point Paul is making. It's a

  681. universal issue. It's an illness, a

  682. disease, a cancer,

  683. and it is spread across the globe. Not

  684. just presently, but it will continue to

  685. spread into the future. Which is why the

  686. gospel is so necessary, why the gospel

  687. is so important. Because this, the

  688. gospel is the only hope in the world.

  689. I love the old proverb. Some may trust

  690. in horses. Some may trust in chariots,

  691. but I will trust in the name of our God.

  692. And so sin is universal. And if it's not

  693. dealt with, it fers like a growing weed

  694. in our life. And we know this. If we

  695. don't take care of the weeds in our

  696. yard, giving enough time, it takes over

  697. and it kills the good grass. It kills

  698. the fruitbearing

  699. crops.

  700. We don't have to learn to sin. It is

  701. natural to us. It's instinctual.

  702. It flows out of us without any effort

  703. or any instruction. Go back with me to

  704. verse 10.

  705. There is no one righteous, not even one.

  706. There is no one who understands. There

  707. is no one who seeks God. Because

  708. understanding only comes out of a

  709. relationship with God.

  710. Now, you may have worldly understanding,

  711. but worldly understanding will never

  712. never get you to heaven. It'll never

  713. forgive your sin. It'll never grant you

  714. eternal life. It'll never resurrect you

  715. out of death in your sin. All have

  716. turned away. All alike have become

  717. worthless. There is no one who does what

  718. is good, not even one. And so here's

  719. here's the challenge for us to grab a

  720. hold of.

  721. If sin grows naturally

  722. and if sin fers, you know what that

  723. means, right?

  724. For sin to fester, that means for it to

  725. rot and decay.

  726. And it doesn't just rot and decay in and

  727. of itself. It rots and decays whatever

  728. it touches.

  729. And so that's why many of us have now

  730. become desensitized

  731. to the things in this world because

  732. we've allowed the rot and the decay of

  733. sin in our life to affect our

  734. perspective in life.

  735. And so that's why unfortunately even in

  736. the church we don't view cohabitation as

  737. a thing when the scripture clearly says

  738. people who are living together unmarried

  739. walk in disobedience before the Lord.

  740. Why we don't view sexuality

  741. as a thing? Well, the world and the

  742. culture has accepted it.

  743. The church better get on board or it'll

  744. lose people. Whenever the church

  745. positions itself to be led by what

  746. culture thinks is appropriate rather

  747. than what the truth declares as true,

  748. then we are on the losing side.

  749. And so when sin fers, if we don't deal

  750. with it, it desensitizes

  751. us to what it does, which is why we

  752. don't take sin very seriously, which is

  753. why we have a casual relationship with

  754. it. So if sin grows naturally, then

  755. holiness must come supernaturally.

  756. We must have a supernatural movement of

  757. God. And that truth dismantles the idea

  758. that we can fix ourselves

  759. because left to myself, I am a sinner

  760. who will sin. There is no effort, there

  761. is no discipline, there is no better

  762. behavior

  763. that will make me holy. And so here's

  764. the question. If sin is our default

  765. setting, if sin comes natural to us,

  766. then the question is not am I sinning?

  767. But the question is, where am I letting

  768. sin go unchecked in my life?

  769. Where am I letting sin fester?

  770. Where am I letting it take over?

  771. Am I tolerating it because it feels

  772. normal even though the scripture calls

  773. it sinful?

  774. What you leave unattended

  775. doesn't stay neutral.

  776. It grows.

  777. And that's what sin does. It fers.

  778. Here's the second thing that we see. Sin

  779. corrupts everything that it touches. Go

  780. back with me to verse 13.

  781. Watch. Watch how Paul moves

  782. from words

  783. to action and to heart.

  784. Sin doesn't just affect the things we

  785. say. Sin doesn't just affect the things

  786. that we do. Sin affects the heart.

  787. It affects the focus. It affects the

  788. worship. It affects how we praise or the

  789. lack of. And so you'll notice in this

  790. passage here that Paul moves from words

  791. to action to thought. Verse 13, their

  792. throat is an open grave.

  793. They deceive with their tongues. Viper's

  794. venom is under their lips. Sin will

  795. latch on

  796. and it'll pump infection that is meant

  797. to kill. And here's the thing. Your sin,

  798. I I want you to hear this. Your sin

  799. doesn't just affect you. We've talked

  800. about this so often. Your sin doesn't

  801. just affect you. But in your sin, you

  802. establish patterns, whether seen or

  803. unseen, that now affect the generations

  804. that come after you. We talked about

  805. this last week and what it means to

  806. think biblically about God.

  807. There are ripple effects from the things

  808. that we say, do, and believe in our

  809. life.

  810. And the more you let sin fester, the

  811. more you understand that it corrupts

  812. everything it touches. That sin is a

  813. stone that gets bigger and bigger and

  814. bigger. And you cast it into the waters

  815. of your life. And the bigger the stone,

  816. the bigger the ripples, which is why we

  817. need the biggest stone there ever is,

  818. the truth of God. And let this be the

  819. stone that we cast into the waters of

  820. our life.

  821. Notice their mouth is full of

  822. bitterness. It's full of cursing. Verse

  823. 14, their feet are swift to shed blood.

  824. Now, now he moves to action. It's not

  825. just the things that we say. It's the

  826. action, the decisions and the choices

  827. that we participate in. What does sin

  828. do? It corrupts us. So, it doesn't just

  829. affect our speech, but it affects our

  830. actions. Their feet are swift to shed

  831. blood. Ruin and wretchedness are in

  832. their paths, and the path of peace they

  833. have not known. And now, what does it

  834. move to? It moves to heart, belief,

  835. perspective. What does verse 18 say?

  836. There is no fear of God before their

  837. eyes.

  838. What they believe about God? Nothing.

  839. There's nothing but rebellion, chaos.

  840. And sin doesn't just separate you from

  841. God.

  842. It actively kills you.

  843. This is why our sin cannot be managed.

  844. This is why so often I can testify to

  845. this. I know you can testify to this. We

  846. try to control our sin in our own

  847. strength.

  848. I won't look at those things again. I

  849. won't say those words again. I won't

  850. lash out that way again. I won't think

  851. that way again. And maybe in your own

  852. strength, it helps for a day, two days,

  853. maybe a couple of weeks, or even a

  854. couple of months. But the human, the

  855. human mind and the human heart cannot

  856. bear what only Jesus can.

  857. And so we need him to kill the sin for

  858. us. And when he kills the sin for us, he

  859. empowers us to deal with the sin that

  860. comes against us. I've said it often

  861. this way, and I'll need to hurry.

  862. The more you pursue the Lord, the less

  863. you desire sin. Now, this side of heaven

  864. will never be sinless,

  865. but we are empowered so that we can sin

  866. less.

  867. And let me just say this regarding sin

  868. corrupting everything. Sin never stays

  869. private.

  870. You can fool me. You can fool this

  871. church, but you can't fool God.

  872. And one day, whether this side of heaven

  873. or before judgment, your sin will be

  874. exposed. So, I want to challenge you.

  875. Ask the Holy Spirit

  876. to show you where your compromise

  877. has become the influence in your life

  878. and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal it to

  879. you so that you can put that sin to

  880. death. Here's the third and final thing

  881. that we see.

  882. All I got one more. I'm actually got

  883. four. So, we're almost there. Sin is not

  884. careless. It's strategic.

  885. The devil and his demons, they have an

  886. agenda. They have a strategy and how

  887. they come against the world, how they

  888. come against God's people. So, so you

  889. remember here back in verses 13 and 14,

  890. Paul is describing sin with this image

  891. of viper's venom.

  892. That's intentional language because what

  893. does venom do? Venom spreads, it

  894. infects, it poisons, it kills slowly and

  895. silently.

  896. And because sin has a strategy,

  897. it's going to invite others into your

  898. darkness.

  899. It'll convince us that lies are

  900. reasonable, that compromise is harmless,

  901. that rebellion is freedom. And by the

  902. time we realize what sin has done, the

  903. damage is already deep.

  904. So ask yourself this question.

  905. What am I defending in my life rather

  906. than confessing before the Lord?

  907. What am I making excuses for in my life

  908. rather than submitting to the Lord?

  909. Here's the fourth thing that we see.

  910. This is where Paul, this is the

  911. crescendo of our passage.

  912. The law exposes.

  913. What does it expose? It exposes our sin.

  914. It exposes our brokenness.

  915. But it points us to how we can be made

  916. new. How Christ saves. Let me read verse

  917. 19.

  918. Now we know that whatever the law says,

  919. it speaks to those who are subject to

  920. the law, so that every mouth may be shut

  921. and the whole world may become subject

  922. to God's judgment.

  923. For no one will be justified in his

  924. sight by the works of the law because

  925. the knowledge of sin comes through the

  926. law. God, this is God's mercy.

  927. It's not so that God would put a leash

  928. on you to say you can't have fun, you

  929. can't enjoy life. This this is not a

  930. rule book to hinder your joy.

  931. This is God's mercy to invite you in to

  932. the greatest joy there is ever the world

  933. has ever known.

  934. Verse 21. But now apart from the law,

  935. the righteousness of God has been

  936. revealed, attested by the law and the

  937. prophets. The righteousness of God is

  938. through faith in Jesus Christ. to all

  939. who believe since there is no

  940. distinction. For all have sinned and

  941. fall short of the glory of God. They are

  942. justified freely by his grace through

  943. the redemption that is in say it with me

  944. Christ Jesus.

  945. That is where redemption rests. No one

  946. is justified by the law. You're not

  947. justified by good behavior that doesn't

  948. merit salvation. Now, let me hit the

  949. pause button and real quick. Is good

  950. behavior good? Of course. Is obedience a

  951. thing to be pursued? Yes and amen. But

  952. as an overflow of the salvation you've

  953. experienced as a result of what God has

  954. done in your life, good behavior,

  955. absence of Jesus, Old Testament, that's

  956. filthy rags. It's worthless. Obedience

  957. and good behavior as an overflow of

  958. relationship with Jesus, that's

  959. biblical. That's truth.

  960. So until we see sin clearly,

  961. salvation will always feel abstract.

  962. And maybe

  963. maybe you've not appreciated

  964. the depth of your salvation, the beauty

  965. and the majesty of the mercies of God in

  966. your life. Maybe you've not appreciated

  967. it the way we're meant to appreciate it

  968. because you've never fully understand

  969. the depth and the evil of your sin.

  970. Church, I pray that we would be a people

  971. that cling to the cross, that cling to

  972. the Lord, that we come with with with

  973. those callous knees and that white

  974. knuckle grip, bargaining,

  975. not bargaining, pleading with the Lord

  976. and calling upon his name to guide us

  977. and direct us

  978. as we seek to be the people God has

  979. called us to be, all while looking at

  980. our sin and putting it to death. Let me

  981. pray. Lord, we thank you for your word.

  982. We thank you for the truth that is found

  983. in you.

  984. A truth that often times because of the

  985. sin in our life escapes us.

  986. But Lord, I pray that as you stir and as

  987. you move,

  988. as you call upon people today, that

  989. salvation

  990. would be stirred in the hearts of

  991. people.

  992. Lord, I thank you

  993. for your goodness, your mercy, and your

  994. grace.

  995. Christ's name we pray. All God's people

  996. said, "Amen." Hey, let's stand to our

  997. feet.
