  1. All right, let's grab our Bibles and

  2. meet me in Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  3. Colossians chapter 1. We're going to be

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  4. reading verses 13- 20. Now, that sounds

  5. familiar. It's because a couple of weeks

  6. ago, Pastor Eric did an incredible job

  7. during our Christmas series unpacking

  8. the truth of what it means to have the

  9. image of God restored in creation. He

  10. did such an amazing job. I felt that I

  11. would piggyback off of he taught and

  12. what he preached from this passage in

  13. order to dive into what I'm calling

  14. thinking biblically about Jesus. Over

  15. the last couple of weeks, we've been

  16. diving into this theme of what it means

  17. to think biblically. We've learned what

  18. it means to think biblically about God.

  19. Last week, we learned what it means to

  20. think biblically about sin. And so, I

  21. want us to continue to engage in the

  22. scriptures so that we can develop a

  23. framework for what it means to think

  24. biblically about sin. Hey, you know what

  25. I just remembered right now? I just,

  26. man, I got so into it. I'm feeling some

  27. angst this morning. Would you turn to

  28. somebody next to you? Give them a high

  29. five and a fist bump. Let them know

  30. you're glad to see them this morning.

  31. Remember,

  32. if you don't know somebody, it's a great

  33. time to introduce yourself.

  34. >> Hey, brother.

  35. I saw some of y'all in your seat saying,

  36. "Oh, he he didn't do it." Yes. I hope he

  37. doesn't remember. [laughter]

  38. But Colossians Colossians chapter 1,

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  39. here's here's what's happening uh in our

  40. passage. Paul is writing to this this

  41. church um who is dealing with what we

  42. would call heresy in the church. And

  43. maybe you've heard that word before, may

  44. maybe not, or maybe you've you've heard

  45. it and you've never really quite

  46. understood. What does it mean when when

  47. something is called heresy or someone is

  48. labeled a heretic? What that means is

  49. that whatever message they're preaching,

  50. whatever sermon they're delivering,

  51. whatever Bible study they're leading, if

  52. the content tense and the message of

  53. that sermon, teaching, or Bible study is

  54. completely

  55. anti-Christian, completely against the

  56. gospel, distorts its truth, pollutes and

  57. adulterates its deep doctrine, that is

  58. called heresy.

  59. And so throughout the ages of the

  60. church, there have been people who have

  61. preached and said things like this.

  62. Jesus didn't really rise from the grave.

  63. That's heresy.

  64. Whoever would teach that would be

  65. labeled a heretic.

  66. There have been other people who would

  67. rise up among the ranks of the church

  68. and would say this. We're not saved by

  69. grace. were saved by works, that would

  70. be labeled heresy and that teacher or

  71. preacher would be labeled a heretic.

  72. Well, there was heresy that was invading

  73. the church in Colasse.

  74. Paul heard about this and so Paul begins

  75. to set the record straight. There were

  76. people engaging the church and were

  77. saying things like this. Jesus is great

  78. and yes, he's savior and he's a great

  79. teacher and yes, there were miracles

  80. done at the work of his hands. But not

  81. only do you need Jesus,

  82. you need Jesus plus this. And they would

  83. say particular works or they would say

  84. particular obedience to laws or

  85. standards or or things uh traditions

  86. that were done in the Old Testament.

  87. And Paul combats that

  88. not by attacking the heresy that's

  89. invading the church. And I love this.

  90. You're going to see this here in just a

  91. moment. Paul combats that by lifting

  92. high the name of Jesus.

  93. Because Paul knows what I pray we know

  94. that when Jesus is lifted high,

  95. when there is this towering view of who

  96. Christ is and how Christ moves and works

  97. in our life, that the shadow of his

  98. mercy and grace is cast over the lies

  99. and the heresies of this world. And so

  100. often what we do in our life is we fall

  101. victim to the entrapment of the enemy

  102. who would take biblical truth, distort

  103. it, twist it, adulterate it, present it

  104. to us in a way that seems palatable and

  105. we accept it not knowing anything

  106. different. But when there is a high view

  107. of Jesus, when there is a biblical view

  108. of Jesus,

  109. we're able to confront the heresies of

  110. this world, the sins in our culture, and

  111. with resounding voice and steadfast

  112. faith, remain planted in a foundation

  113. that is anchored in what is firm and

  114. true, and be able to proclaim the truth

  115. of God as it casts its shadow over the

  116. lies and the heresies of this world. So

  117. Colossians chapter 1, we're going to

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  118. begin in verse 13. We're going to read

  119. all the way through verse 20. But but

  120. before we get there, this is not on the

  121. screen.

  122. As as I was reviewing this early this

  123. morning,

  124. I I I I I was reading the whole chapter

  125. uh and and I got to verse 9 here and I

  126. thought, man, this is a great setup

  127. for what Paul is is doing as he steers

  128. the hearts of the Colossians as he

  129. steers their hearts towards a high view

  130. of Jesus. Because when your heart is is

  131. centered and and and your spirit is

  132. focused on Jesus, it has less time to

  133. focus on the lies of this world. So in

  134. verse 9, let me read it to you real

  135. quick, then we'll get into verse 13. He

  136. says, "For this reason,

  137. since the day we heard this, we haven't

  138. stopped praying for you. We are asking

  139. that you may be filled with the

  140. knowledge of his will." And I love this

  141. right here. In all wisdom and spiritual

  142. understanding,

  143. knowing that the passage we get into is

  144. going to make a lot of sense. Paul is

  145. writing to a church that is battling

  146. heresy that it's crept way in. Paul

  147. says, "I'm praying for you and I want

  148. you to have knowledge and spiritual

  149. understanding."

  150. Well, Roland, how do we gain knowledge

  151. and spiritual understanding? Notice that

  152. here in our passage, Paul's going to

  153. point them right to Jesus.

  154. When you look to Jesus,

  155. what the Holy Spirit does is the Holy

  156. Spirit begins to stir you and form you

  157. and mold you your thoughts, your speech,

  158. your patterns. And as the Holy Spirit is

  159. moving and working in your life and we

  160. are stepping into obedience with

  161. intentionality, remember you don't drift

  162. into obedience. You have to set sail and

  163. steer your life towards obedience. When

  164. that happens,

  165. the natural result of a life that is

  166. intentionally seeking after the Lord,

  167. that is gazing upon a biblical Jesus, is

  168. this wisdom and spiritual understanding.

  169. How many of us can use some wisdom and

  170. spiritual understanding?

  171. I know we can. You know, a transparent

  172. moment for us this morning. My mind just

  173. drifted this week.

  174. And every morning I I I I wake up in the

  175. morning. I wake up before everyone else

  176. and I start the coffee pot. I sit in my

  177. chair. Just have a moment with with the

  178. Lord. And typically my routine goes like

  179. this. I I drink coffee. I open up the

  180. scriptures. I get out my journal. And I

  181. just I just start to have some some time

  182. with the Lord. But but several moments

  183. this week that didn't happen because my

  184. mind just just started drifting. And

  185. here's the scary part.

  186. I didn't recognize it immediately.

  187. And and and and even when there were

  188. hints of Roland, you got to open the

  189. scriptures first. Let's seek the Lord

  190. first. I silenced the voice. How many of

  191. us have ever silenced the voice? Because

  192. the flesh, the flesh is loud.

  193. That sinful nature is louder.

  194. And there was a moment, I don't remember

  195. what morning, but there was a moment

  196. where I just recognized I can't I can't

  197. do this. I can't go down this path. Not

  198. that there was anything immoral or crazy

  199. happening, but but I got to the point

  200. where I recognize if if I continue here,

  201. then who knows what I happen down there.

  202. And so often what happens, especially

  203. when it comes to to following after

  204. Jesus, to growing in wisdom and

  205. spiritual understanding, what happens is

  206. is we don't make the conscious and

  207. intentional decision here

  208. to close the door to the enemy

  209. and to gaze upon Jesus until we've ended

  210. up down here.

  211. >> But isn't God so gracious enough that

  212. even when we end up down here,

  213. he calls us home? Amen. And

  214. >> he pulls us into his mercy and he pulls

  215. us into his grace and he calls you his

  216. own. So, so let's go to verse 13 through

  217. verse 20. Let's unpack this together.

  218. He

  219. has rescued us from the domain of

  220. darkness and transferred us into the

  221. kingdom of the son he loves. I love how

  222. the NIV puts it. Has transferred us into

  223. the kingdom of his beloved son.

  224. This is Exodus language. You might have

  225. picked up on that.

  226. In him, verse 14,

  227. we have redemption, the forgiveness of

  228. sins.

  229. In him, in who? In Christ.

  230. And in Christ, we are made his

  231. redemption. That's what it means. We are

  232. like a slave set free from bondage.

  233. and we are made new the forgiveness of

  234. sins. Verse 15, he is the image of the

  235. invisible God, the firstborn over all

  236. creation. For everything was created by

  237. him in heaven and on earth, the visible

  238. and the invisible, whether thrones or

  239. dominions or rulers or authorities, all

  240. things have been created through him and

  241. for him. He is before all things, and by

  242. him all things hold together. He is also

  243. the head of the body, the church.

  244. He is the beginning, the firstborn from

  245. the dead, so that he might come to have

  246. first place in everything. For God was

  247. pleased

  248. to have all his fullness dwell in him

  249. and through him to reconcile everything

  250. to himself. I am I am so grateful

  251. for reconciliation

  252. as as I'm reading this. Even now, I'm I

  253. I'm feeling conviction.

  254. I'm feeling gratitude.

  255. the fact that that God would take

  256. sinners like us

  257. and despite our sin, despite our

  258. failures,

  259. provide the path to reconciliation.

  260. >> That doesn't give us an excuse to

  261. continue down the p the path of

  262. sinfulness.

  263. It doesn't make an excuse. Nor does it

  264. excuse us from the consequences,

  265. the worldly consequences of the

  266. decisions and the choices that we've

  267. made.

  268. But it does point us to hope. It does

  269. point us to someone who is greater and

  270. better [clears throat] than than any

  271. action you and I can commit. And maybe

  272. this is just for one person this

  273. morning, but but let me just say this.

  274. You know, no matter how dark of a pit

  275. you find yourself in spiritually, no

  276. matter how heinous you think your sin

  277. is, and let me just say this, that pit

  278. is dark

  279. >> and that sin is heinous and it is evil

  280. and it is an affront and it is spitting

  281. in the face of God in your rebellion and

  282. sinfulness against him. But even in

  283. that, God calls you.

  284. He invites you in

  285. and he stirs you BECAUSE WITHOUT HIM,

  286. YOU'LL NEVER turn to him.

  287. Without the spirit in you and moving

  288. through you, we remain lost for ever. So

  289. I am grateful that through him

  290. everything is reconciled to himself. And

  291. he continues here at the end of verse

  292. 20, whether things on earth or things in

  293. heaven by making peace through his

  294. blood, shed

  295. the cross. And all God's people said,

  296. "Amen."

  297. >> Lord, would you bless your word? Holy

  298. Spirit, would you stir our hearts?

  299. Incredible.

  300. It's incredible what what the Lord is

  301. doing here through Paul again as he's

  302. reminding the Colossian Christians of

  303. who Jesus is.

  304. And here's what I want us to understand

  305. this morning as as we go back to our

  306. passage and unpack some things.

  307. When we have a biblical view of Jesus,

  308. then that means we are going to with

  309. with with greater strength and greater

  310. empowerment

  311. be able to combat the lies and the sins

  312. and the evil that is set up against us

  313. to rob us, to destroy us, to take our

  314. peace, our joy away, to make us look at

  315. life with bitterness and and anger. And

  316. I also want to say this, what you

  317. believe about Jesus matters. And not

  318. only that, how you've come to believe

  319. those things about Jesus matters. I've

  320. been in ministry for over 20 years. And

  321. and in my time in ministry, I I've had

  322. the opportunity obviously to speak with

  323. people about Jesus.

  324. And I don't know why I I I am still

  325. surprised at this that I'll sit with

  326. people who've been in church for decades

  327. and we'll begin to unpack what the

  328. gospel is and who Jesus is.

  329. And I'll leave those conversations

  330. asking myself, I don't think this person

  331. really knows who Jesus is.

  332. Because their understanding of Jesus

  333. has not come from the voice of

  334. scripture.

  335. It's come from the voices of the world,

  336. the voices of social media, the voices

  337. of literature that are anything other

  338. than the truth of scripture. what you

  339. believe about Jesus and how you've come

  340. to believe those things absolutely

  341. matters.

  342. So what I want to do is is I want you to

  343. be challenged by this question

  344. as you are growing in wisdom and

  345. spiritual understanding. How are you

  346. getting there?

  347. Because if the voice of this book

  348. is not as loud as voices of this world,

  349. then we risk believing in a Jesus that

  350. is not biblical.

  351. We risk believing in things that are not

  352. biblical. And you know this, this has

  353. crept into the church.

  354. We've tolerated particular sins in the

  355. church that we've become desensitized

  356. to sins in the church. So much so that

  357. particular denominations are now openly

  358. accepting

  359. particular sins in the church.

  360. Church, that only happens when this is

  361. not the loudest voice in your life.

  362. And when the truth of God is the loudest

  363. voice in your life, it's going to shape

  364. how you think.

  365. >> Amen.

  366. >> It's going to shape how you interact

  367. with the world around you, men. It's

  368. going to shape how you lead in your

  369. marriage, how you lead in your homes,

  370. >> how we engage with the community,

  371. and for the purposes of our message,

  372. it's going to shape how we think about

  373. Jesus.

  374. Let me tell you why this is important.

  375. If we do not have a biblical

  376. understanding of Jesus,

  377. then we will have a false understanding

  378. of salvation.

  379. And there are so many people and and and

  380. maybe this is this is a point of

  381. accountability for some of us. If

  382. anything, it's to cause us to do some

  383. spiritual reflection.

  384. There are so many people in the church

  385. today who have a false salvation

  386. because they believed in a false Jesus.

  387. Let me make it as plain as if you don't

  388. believe in the Jesus of the scriptures,

  389. then you are not saved by the Jesus of

  390. the scriptures.

  391. >> This is the truth that transforms. This

  392. is the truth that shapes who Jesus is.

  393. And I know the rebuttal because I myself

  394. have asked it before. Well, how do we

  395. know this is true? I'm glad you asked

  396. it.

  397. continue attending every Sunday because

  398. we're going to spend an entire Sunday

  399. morning unpacking how we need to think

  400. biblically about God's word. Why we can

  401. trust God's word.

  402. >> Why why when we say things about God and

  403. sin and salvation and Christianity and

  404. all that God has planned for us, we can

  405. believe it and hold fast to it. Not

  406. because Christianity is blind faith,

  407. but because we hope and we trust in what

  408. has been scrutinized over generations

  409. and millennia and is withtood

  410. withtood the persecution set out against

  411. it.

  412. So the question this morning is not do

  413. you believe in Jesus. The question this

  414. morning is, do you believe in the

  415. biblical Jesus? So, here's what I want

  416. to do. We're going to go back to our

  417. [snorts]

  418. These are identityshaping truths Paul

  419. gives to the church in

  420. truths that if we get right or rather

  421. that we receive,

  422. we'll get to know Jesus rightly. So,

  423. here's the first one. I don't know if

  424. you like taking notes.

  425. Jesus doesn't need to be changed to fit

  426. our life.

  427. The contrary of this is is is so

  428. prevalent in our culture, is it not?

  429. We create a Jesus that fits our

  430. preferences, that fits our desires, that

  431. fits what we want. We redefine, we

  432. recreate in order for Jesus to be the

  433. kind of savior we want. But Jesus

  434. doesn't need to be changed to fit your

  435. life. Actually,

  436. it's quite the opposite.

  437. >> We are changed to fit the life of Jesus.

  438. Now, I had some tension coming into this

  439. point in particular because I have used

  440. language and lingo and phrasing that

  441. that that if we're not careful and we

  442. don't understand what is really being

  443. said or we can be swayed. And so we say

  444. things like, "I'm inviting Jesus into my

  445. heart. I I'm I'm giving my life to

  446. Jesus." I'm not against saying those

  447. things as long as we explain what we

  448. mean by those things because in reality,

  449. right, let's just lay down the straight

  450. theological truth here. We don't give

  451. our lives to Jesus. Jesus takes your

  452. life

  453. >> and he makes you his own.

  454. >> That's what he does. We we we don't

  455. invite Jesus into our life. Jesus calls

  456. us into his

  457. >> life. And so when we use those phrases,

  458. that's what we mean.

  459. It helps us grab a picture of what is

  460. taking place here. And I love how Paul

  461. begins with kingdom language right here

  462. in verse 13.

  463. He has rescued us from the domain of

  464. darkness

  465. and transferred us into the kingdom of

  466. the son he loves.

  467. The domain of darkness.

  468. He's rescued us from that

  469. which claims has power, control, and

  470. authority over you.

  471. I think one of the biggest successes,

  472. let me put that in quotations because

  473. the devil's not successful at all for

  474. lack of a better phrase. One of the

  475. biggest successes

  476. the devil has is making us believe that

  477. we're in control,

  478. that we're choosing our own path.

  479. But if you are living a life in

  480. rebellion to Jesus,

  481. you're not in control. Guess who is the

  482. devil and his demons?

  483. They're in control. Now, now, no one in

  484. their right mind would get up and say,

  485. "I'm controlled by the devil and his

  486. demons." But a life that is lived

  487. contrary and in rebellion to the

  488. holiness of God is a life lived for the

  489. devil and his agenda.

  490. And because we know that,

  491. we attempt to shape Jesus to fit our

  492. life so that we can wake up in the

  493. morning knee deep in our sin and still

  494. feel holy

  495. >> and still feel good about ourselves.

  496. But what does Christ do? He rescues us

  497. from that, from that domain, from that

  498. authority, from that lie, from that

  499. which blinds us. And not only does he

  500. rescue us, what does he do? He transfers

  501. us,

  502. our citizenship is changed, we're now

  503. adopted into his family, his kingdom.

  504. And what it tells us is that Christ,

  505. Jesus salvation,

  506. what he calls us to is not just a

  507. helpful addition to our life. It is

  508. about God rescuing us through Jesus

  509. from one authority and relocating us to

  510. another

  511. >> and that's his son Jesus. You may have

  512. picked up on this. This this is a

  513. language of rescue.

  514. Um the transfer is strong, right? It

  515. implies bondage.

  516. And and and this is language that that

  517. the Christians in this church would have

  518. immediately understood as an arrow

  519. pointing to the Exodus.

  520. The Jewish faith,

  521. their foundation

  522. of who God is

  523. was revealed and seen and experienced

  524. through the Exodus story that God raises

  525. up a deliverer and he sets his people

  526. free out of bondage and slavery and into

  527. life eternal into the promised land. And

  528. I've shared this before, but I'll remind

  529. us again. We right now church between

  530. the first advent, the birth of Jesus and

  531. the second advent, the return of Jesus,

  532. we are living in a spiritual exodus.

  533. The moment you were raised to new life

  534. in Jesus,

  535. you now became part of the spiritual

  536. exodus. So one day, either Christ

  537. returns first or we draw our last

  538. breath. We're on our way to the promised

  539. land. We're on our way to the new

  540. heavens and the new earth, the new

  541. kingdom, the one that we've been rescued

  542. to, the one that we've been transferred

  543. to. And and right now, as we deal with

  544. all the limits and all the chaos and all

  545. the burdens that is the world as we know

  546. it, we are in this exodus. And guess

  547. what? We're not in it by ourselves.

  548. You're in it. I'm in it. We're locking

  549. arms together and we're on our way to

  550. the glory and majesty that awaits God's

  551. people.

  552. So you don't need to redefine Jesus

  553. because the greatest type of joy is

  554. found in the biblical Jesus.

  555. And I think this is why the gospel

  556. confronts us so directly

  557. because Jesus is not just an accessory.

  558. He is king who reigns and rules. Here's

  559. the second thing. We've we've touched up

  560. on this, but I'll go through it rather

  561. quickly. Jesus defines truth. He doesn't

  562. affirm

  563. preferences.

  564. The first part of verse 15 says this, he

  565. is the image of the invisible

  566. God.

  567. That that's not a functional statement.

  568. I want us to know that it's not just

  569. showing us the function or the do of

  570. Jesus.

  571. It's showing us the identity of Jesus.

  572. So often we seek the hand of God without

  573. ever seeking the face of God. We want

  574. the blessings of God without ever

  575. participation in the family of God.

  576. And Paul makes it absolutely clear here

  577. who Jesus is. Remember, he's combating

  578. heresy that has infiltrated the church.

  579. And what does he do first? He doesn't

  580. attack the heresy. He's going to do that

  581. here in chapter 2.

  582. But what is he going to do first? He's

  583. going to point our gaze towards Jesus.

  584. looked to Jesus first. I share my

  585. favorite, one of my favorite Bible

  586. verses often, Matthew 6:33.

    Matthew 6:33

  587. Seek first the kingdom of God and his

  588. righteousness,

  589. then everything else will be added to

  590. you.

  591. What does that mean today for us? That

  592. means when when your heart is aimed at

  593. Jesus,

  594. when your marriage, your family,

  595. everything about your life is centered

  596. on Jesus, then everything else is given

  597. its proper order.

  598. your perspective shifts regarding

  599. everything else. Why? Because it's

  600. viewed through the lens of Christ.

  601. This is why we need to think biblically

  602. about Jesus. I shared this a couple of

  603. weeks ago.

  604. How heretical

  605. will it be

  606. if I came up here and said, I'm going to

  607. teach us to think worldly about Jesus

  608. >> and then begin to preach to you a false

  609. Jesus.

  610. He loves you right where you are.

  611. Doesn't matter what you do. Go on and do

  612. it. He's a forgiving God anyway. What

  613. Paul combats that throughout the New

  614. Testament, particularly in the book of

  615. Romans.

  616. He's like, "No, a heart that says that

  617. is a heart that doesn't know the

  618. biblical Jesus." So Jesus defines the

  619. truth,

  620. not affirm our preferences. It's it's

  621. it's actually as we look to the biblical

  622. definition of Jesus and we see how he

  623. defines truth, we often find, and you

  624. can testify to this, I know you can. We

  625. often find that he attacks our

  626. preferences.

  627. He attacks them to empower us to put

  628. them to death. We learned this last

  629. week. When we deal with sin, we need to

  630. deal aggressively with our sin. We need

  631. to deal with it in a way that puts it to

  632. death.

  633. That's what Christ calls us to do. Now,

  634. now look at verse 19. It says, "For God

  635. was pleased to have all his fullness

  636. dwell in him."

  637. That language leaves no room to redefine

  638. Jesus.

  639. No room to change who he biblically is.

  640. This is what the culture often resists.

  641. This is what the culture pushes back at.

  642. Oh, they're just too traditional.

  643. They're just too conservative.

  644. They just want people

  645. to be robots and not have fun and not

  646. experience joy. I was talking with with

  647. a group this morning and I said, "When

  648. when the scripture lays out boundaries

  649. for us, when the scripture puts up these

  650. guard rails for us, it's not to hinder

  651. your joy. It's not to rob you of joy. As

  652. a matter of fact, the boundaries of

  653. scripture are set up in such a way so

  654. that you can experience the fullness of

  655. joy. But you can't know that until you

  656. have a biblical understanding of Jesus.

  657. It's there to create a fullness of joy

  658. in him. And so the culture resists this.

  659. The culture wants a Jesus who affirms

  660. what we already believe. The culture

  661. wants a Jesus who never confronts sin. A

  662. Jesus who never challenges authority. A

  663. Jesus who never demands repentance.

  664. But Jesus defines truth because Jesus

  665. reveals to us who the father is. And let

  666. me just say this real quick before we

  667. move on. Truth is not something we vote

  668. on. Truth is not something we feel our

  669. way into. Truth is revealed in a person

  670. and this and that person is Jesus

  671. Christ. Here's the third thing that we

  672. understand. Jesus is not discovered

  673. internally.

  674. He's revealed scripturally.

  675. No one searches themselves to find the

  676. biblical Jesus.

  677. You need the truth of God to show you

  678. that. Because if you remember last week

  679. as we dove into the book of Romans, the

  680. scripture says there is no one who does

  681. good, not one. There is no one who is

  682. righteous, no one who seeks after God.

  683. We need a movement of God in order to

  684. see the face of God. And so what often

  685. happens is we search internally

  686. for what can only be revealed

  687. spiritually.

  688. And when we search internally, we're

  689. searching from a heart, from

  690. experiences, from a past that is rooted

  691. in nothing but sin and evil. So you

  692. can't discover holiness

  693. in a birthplace of sin and evil. Which

  694. is why we need the truth of God revealed

  695. to us. Go back with me to verse 15.

  696. He is the image of the invisible God,

  697. the firstborn over all creation. For

  698. everything was created by him in heaven

  699. and on earth, the visible and the

  700. invisible, whether thrones or dominions

  701. or rulers or authorities. All things

  702. have been created through him and for

  703. him. He is before all things and by him

  704. all things hold together.

  705. No one looks to themselves and concludes

  706. this about Christ. No one does.

  707. This is why Christ must be revealed.

  708. This is why us as ministers of the

  709. gospel and make no mistake if you have

  710. placed your hope, faith and trust in

  711. Jesus as Lord and Savior, you are a

  712. minister of the gospel, this is why the

  713. scripture calls us to preach the good

  714. news.

  715. Sharing the gospel is not exclusive to

  716. pastors, Sunday school teachers or

  717. evangelists. Sharing the gospel is an

  718. expectation for you, son of God, you

  719. daughter of God. That is the command and

  720. expectation over your life. You say,

  721. "Well, how do I do that?" Well, look at

  722. the ministry God has given you. Well,

  723. Roman, what do you mean the ministry God

  724. has given me? The sales call, the

  725. classroom, the engineering meeting,

  726. that's your ministry to put on display

  727. the works of God in your life.

  728. And when people recognize the work of

  729. God in your life, this is the sermon on

  730. the mount. This is what Jesus says. They

  731. see the light that you shine. They give

  732. honor and glory to the father who is in

  733. heaven. Why? Because it opens the door

  734. for questions. why are you different?

  735. And through a relationship over the

  736. course of of months and weeks or years

  737. with co-workers,

  738. you've established enough credibility to

  739. speak into their life. And and I've

  740. heard your stories. You know, people,

  741. co-workers

  742. who are going through hard situations,

  743. whe whether it's health issues,

  744. financial issues, familial issues, and

  745. you're able to speak clarity and

  746. guidance and direction into their life.

  747. Here's the fourth thing. We'll close on

  748. this.

  749. Jesus cannot be reduced without being

  750. replaced.

  751. To believe in a Jesus of your own making

  752. is to believe in a false Jesus.

  753. And there are so many belief systems and

  754. ideologies

  755. that use Christian language. Jesus, God,

  756. salvation, repentance.

  757. But because they define those words

  758. differently than how the Bible defines

  759. them, it's a false belief system. It's a

  760. false salvation. They've replaced Jesus.

  761. And you cannot be saved by a Jesus that

  762. has been replaced. Let me close by

  763. reading 18 and on. He is the head of the

  764. body, the church. He is the beginning,

  765. the firstborn from the dead, so that he

  766. might come to have first place in

  767. everything. For God was pleased to have

  768. all this his fullness dwell in him and

  769. through him, praise God, to reconcile

  770. everything to himself, whether things on

  771. earth or things in heaven, by making

  772. peace through his blood shed on the

  773. cross.

  774. You cannot keep Jesus as a moral teacher

  775. while denying him as Lord.

  776. You cannot keep Jesus as loving while

  777. rejecting his authority.

  778. You cannot keep Jesus as savior while

  779. refusing his supremacy.

  780. So maybe this morning

  781. some of us need to have an encounter

  782. with the biblical Jesus.

  783. And maybe this morning, the Holy Spirit

  784. is stirring us to turn

  785. from the false Jesus that we've clung to

  786. for so long and to embrace new life

  787. in the Jesus of the scriptures. Would

  788. you pray with me? Heavenly Father, we

  789. thank you for your work. We thank you

  790. for your direction, for your guidance.

  791. We thank you that you are a God who

  792. saves.

  793. How incredible is it, Lord,

  794. that when a sinner comes to repentance,

  795. there is rejoicing.

  796. God, I pray that your hand would be upon

  797. our time of response,

  798. as we seek your direction, as we submit

  799. to the beckoning of the spirits. May it

  800. be all of you and none of us. In

  801. Christ's name we pray. All God's people

  802. said, "Amen." Hey, would you stand to

  803. your feet with me? Let's sing together.

  804. [music]

  805. Let's lift up the name of Jesus. He's

  806. good. He's great. Let our voices be the

  807. praise that's ushered up to the throne

  808. room of heaven. Our altar is going to be

  809. open. This is a time for you to respond.

  810. If you need prayer, Pastor Eric and

  811. myself, we'd love to pray with you. If

  812. you'd [music] love to celebrate a

  813. victory, we'd love to celebrate that

  814. with you. Our altar will be open. If you

  815. want to have some one-on-one [music]

  816. time with the Lord, this is what this

  817. moment is providing for us. I love you,

  818. church.
