  1. All right, if you have a Bible or an

  2. app, let's open it up. We're going to be

  3. back in the book of Acts today and over

  4. the course of the next couple of months

  5. until we hit summer, we're going to be

  6. working uh through our journey of Luke's

  7. writing about the history of the New

  8. Testament church. And so, we'll find

  9. ourselves in Acts chapter 15 this

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  10. morning. We'll be reading verses 1

  11. through 11. Now, if you have not been

  12. with us since we started the book of

  13. Acts, we are actually in part 47. So,

  14. this will be the 47th sermon that we are

  15. preaching and diving into as we continue

  16. to unpack the journey of the early

  17. believers after Jesus was resurrected

  18. from the grave, after he ascended into

  19. heaven and left his followers with a

  20. mission.

  21. And so over the course of 14 chapters,

  22. we've seen the gospel that began in

  23. Jerusalem with a small following of

  24. individuals

  25. explode exponentially

  26. to fill not just hundreds but thousands

  27. of people with the spirit of God as they

  28. go about to fulfill the calling to

  29. proclaim the truth of the gospel to a

  30. world that is in need. And up until this

  31. point, we've seen the church face

  32. opposition and persecution from the

  33. outside.

  34. People who have this agenda to silence

  35. the scriptures to put to death the

  36. people of God have brought every tool,

  37. every charge, and every weapon against

  38. the church. And we've discovered over

  39. the last 14 chapters that no matter how

  40. hard the enemy and the people that are

  41. set against the gospel message will push

  42. against the gospel, it always serves as

  43. a catalyst for the gospel to continue to

  44. go forward in power. And that tells us

  45. so much. Primarily, it tells us that

  46. nothing will ever stop the proclamation

  47. of the gospel.

  48. Because in the big picture of scripture,

  49. remember God raises up you, he raises up

  50. me, he raises up the people of God, his

  51. sons and his daughters. As we are filled

  52. with the spirit, as we understand the

  53. mission at hand, as we are equipped for

  54. what lays ahead of us, God uses the

  55. church, and I'm not talking about this

  56. local church, but God is that mine?

  57. Thank you. God uses the big church, big

  58. C universal church to fulfill the

  59. mission. And if we don't do it, if we

  60. don't cry out and praise, you know what

  61. the scripture says? Then the rocks will

  62. do it on our behalf. And you know the

  63. old saying, or I hope you do. It goes

  64. like this. I won't let a rock out praise

  65. me. I will continue to press in. I will

  66. continue to move forward. And so every

  67. time the gospel, there has been this

  68. attempt by outside opposition to silence

  69. the gospel, the gospel has continued to

  70. go forward in power. Well, now we

  71. approach Acts chapter 15

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  72. and opposition and persecution against

  73. the gospel rises up, but this time it's

  74. not from outside the church. This time

  75. it's from within the church. Anybody

  76. ever experienced church conflict before?

  77. Anybody ever experienced opposition from

  78. a trusted brother or sister in Christ?

  79. Of course, we all have. Why? because

  80. we're not perfect, because we have our

  81. preferences, because we're selfish

  82. people, and just like we'll discover in

  83. Acts chapter 15, we often will get in

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  84. the way of the very thing God desires to

  85. do in us and through us. So, Acts

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  86. chapter 15, let's read verses 1- 11, and

  87. let's see how this begins to pan out.

  88. Beginning in verse one,

  89. some men came down from Judea and began

  90. to teach the brothers.

  91. Well, what did they begin to teach?

  92. Unless you are circumcised according to

  93. the custom prescribed by Moses, you

  94. cannot be saved. Let me hit the pause

  95. button for just a moment so that we can

  96. wrap our minds around the depth of what

  97. is happening here. You have men from

  98. Judea. The the these are believing

  99. individuals, people from within the

  100. church who have now gotten word that

  101. Paul and Barnabas and Peter and the

  102. disciples of Jesus are starting these

  103. churches. People are being saved. And if

  104. you remember, we ended Acts chapter 14

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  105. with a greater understanding that not

  106. only are the Jews being saved, but

  107. Gentiles as well. Let me kind of give us

  108. a brief history lesson on what that

  109. means. If you were a Jew, that meant

  110. that you could trace your ancestry, your

  111. heritage, your bloodline all the way

  112. back to Father Abraham, who God made a

  113. covenant with and called to be the

  114. father of nations. Now, that's key

  115. because it's not just a father of a

  116. nation. It's a father of nations, which

  117. even back in the covenant call of

  118. Abraham in the book of Genesis reveals

  119. to us that God's plan has always been

  120. for the salvation of all people, not

  121. just specific people.

  122. This is the issue that is taking place

  123. here.

  124. These men have now come down to where

  125. Paul and Barnabas and Peter are and are

  126. saying exactly that God only saves

  127. specific people and only the people who

  128. do these things.

  129. Now, they're not talking about the

  130. gospel message that says God saves those

  131. who put faith in Jesus.

  132. Did you notice the problem that's

  133. arising here? What are they saying?

  134. Unless you are circumcised according to

  135. the custom prescribed by Moses, you

  136. cannot be what? You cannot be saved. So

  137. it's not unless you put faith in Jesus

  138. Christ, can you be saved? It's unless

  139. you put faith in Jesus Christ and do

  140. this, you cannot be saved.

  141. Now so many centuries removed from what

  142. was taking place here in the book of

  143. Acts, we may feel this is unrelatable.

  144. But the principle even though the false

  145. principle that's being presented here is

  146. still relatable to us in this sense. We

  147. may not say unless you are circumcised

  148. you cannot be saved. But we may say

  149. things like this. Unless you go to this

  150. church you can't be saved. Unless you do

  151. it this way you can't be saved. Unless

  152. you play this type of music you can't be

  153. saved. Unless you read from this type of

  154. translation you can't be saved unless

  155. you vote this way. You can't be saved.

  156. And if all we ever do is deduce the

  157. gospel to something that needs to be

  158. added, then it no longer becomes the

  159. gospel it was meant to be. It becomes

  160. man-made. It becomes made up. This is

  161. huge

  162. because what these men are effective

  163. effectively doing is saying, "God's not

  164. the one who determines who is his

  165. children. I determine who is his

  166. children." And church, this is how cults

  167. are created. This is how false

  168. ideologies and false religions are

  169. created. And maybe some of us here this

  170. morning, this is an opportunity for us

  171. to challenge some longheld beliefs that

  172. maybe we've been raised in, maybe we've

  173. learned to grab on to over the course of

  174. our Christian life. And this morning,

  175. what we want to do as we unpack the rest

  176. of our passage is we want to look at

  177. what does the Bible say about salvation.

  178. Remember, this is our authority.

  179. Why is it our authority? We did an

  180. entire sermon series at the beginning of

  181. the year. You can go check it out at

  182. reachtogrow.com/sermons.

  183. and why it's important that we think

  184. biblically about God's word, why we can

  185. trust it, why it's not just some random

  186. writings that one day people chose to

  187. believe. But this has been tested,

  188. evidence has proven it over the course

  189. of history and scientific discovery. Why

  190. we can trust the Bible? And so this

  191. morning, we want to look at what is the

  192. gospel,

  193. what is it, and what is it not? Let's

  194. continue in verse two.

  195. After Paul and Barnabas had engaged them

  196. in serious argument and debate, Paul and

  197. Barnabas and some others were appointed

  198. to go up to the apostles and elders in

  199. Jerusalem about this issue.

  200. Now, if you are into church history,

  201. you've undoubtedly have heard the phrase

  202. the Jerusalem Council.

  203. This is where we discover what took

  204. place in the Jerusalem Council. The

  205. Jerusalem Council, one of their primary

  206. purposes of meeting together was to

  207. determine what these individuals were

  208. saying was false, but not in a new

  209. sense.

  210. in the sense that what had already been

  211. believed and lived out and proclaimed

  212. throughout the scripture is exactly what

  213. the church was already doing. Preaching

  214. that faith in Jesus Christ is all that

  215. is necessary for the salvation of your

  216. soul. Now, I know the rebuttal to that

  217. because I at one point in my life had it

  218. as well. And if you've been at the Grove

  219. for a while, you know, we undoubtedly

  220. always come back to this argument. Well,

  221. if all it takes is faith and nothing

  222. else, then I can just place faith in

  223. Jesus Christ and live life the way I

  224. want. Hold that thought. We're going to

  225. address that ideology here in just a

  226. moment. But I want us to notice

  227. something here in verse two.

  228. It says, "Paul and Barnabas had engaged

  229. them in serious argument and debate."

  230. It's important to recognize that Luke

  231. includes that word serious.

  232. Why? Because this is a serious matter.

  233. Paul will be so passionate about the

  234. purity of the gospel that he'll later

  235. write a letter to the church in Galatia

  236. and he'll say this. If any one man or

  237. angel comes to you preaching another

  238. gospel,

  239. a gospel that doesn't focus on Jesus, a

  240. gospel that doesn't focus on his grace,

  241. but any other gospel that says you need

  242. to do this in order for you to be saved

  243. and puts the power of salvation in your

  244. hands and your actions, Paul says, "Let

  245. him be anathema."

  246. Now, that word really doesn't mean a

  247. whole lot to us, but back in biblical

  248. times, that was huge.

  249. Paul was saying, "May you be cursed and

  250. condemned." Why? Because your false

  251. gospel, your false instruction, the

  252. false security you are laying before

  253. people are affecting their very souls.

  254. And the reason that that we will forever

  255. and continue to be a church that is

  256. centered, rooted, and planted on the

  257. truth of God's word is because this is

  258. the power of life change.

  259. I'm not talking about the paper, the

  260. ink, or the leather that this is made

  261. of. I'm talking about the message and

  262. the savior who it points to. This is

  263. what brings life change and

  264. transformation. Which is why in parts of

  265. the world, people may not have access to

  266. written copies of this, but that doesn't

  267. mean the gospel is absent from their

  268. life. Because the gospel exists here. It

  269. exists here. It exists here. That's

  270. where the power of God is demonstrated

  271. through his mercy, through his grace,

  272. through the indwelling power of the

  273. spirit. It's not by the things that we

  274. do or don't do. Mind you, those things

  275. are absolutely important. But it is by

  276. Christ and Christ alone.

  277. Let's go to verse three.

  278. When they had been sent out on their way

  279. by the church, they passed through both

  280. Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in

  281. detail the conversion of the Gentiles.

  282. That's important. That's not a random

  283. phrase because what these men are

  284. essentially doing is saying you can't be

  285. a believer in Jesus unless you convert

  286. to Judaism.

  287. and Paul and Barnabas have open debate.

  288. They have serious discussion. They say,

  289. "We're going to go to Jerusalem. We're

  290. going to meet with the elders, the

  291. apostles. We're going to settle this

  292. once and for all." So, there's no

  293. confusion. And what's interesting on the

  294. way over there, they experienced gospel

  295. proclamation. They experienced salvation

  296. the way it's meant to be experienced.

  297. And it brought great joy to all the

  298. brothers and sisters. Verse four. When

  299. they arrived at Jerusalem, they were

  300. welcomed by the church, the apostles and

  301. the elders, and they reported all that

  302. God had done with them. But some of the

  303. believers who belonged to the party of

  304. the Pharisees stood up and said, "It is

  305. necessary to circumcise them and to

  306. command them to keep the law of Moses."

  307. Are you tracking?

  308. It is necessary that you vote this way.

  309. It is necessary that you sing only these

  310. songs. It is necessary that you do only

  311. these things. It is necessary then you

  312. will be saved. Every time we add to the

  313. gospel, it is no longer the gospel.

  314. The apostles and the elders, verse six,

  315. gathered to consider this matter. After

  316. there had been much debate, Peter stood

  317. up and said to them, I love this,

  318. "Brothers,

  319. you are aware that in the early days God

  320. made a choice among you, that by my

  321. mouth the Gentiles would hear the gospel

  322. message and believe." Peter is

  323. reflecting, if you remember earlier in

  324. the book of Acts, a moment in which he

  325. was called by God. Remember, he had this

  326. dream. He was called by God to go and

  327. meet with a gentile by the name of

  328. Cornelius. Cornelius and his family were

  329. filled with the spirit. And it was a

  330. clear sign to the church then. It's a

  331. clear sign to the church today that God

  332. is inviting all people, all nations,

  333. every tribe, tongue, and nation to be

  334. part of his family. Not through anything

  335. that we do, but through everything

  336. Christ has accomplished on Calvar's

  337. cross, through the resurrection of the

  338. grave, through his ascension into

  339. heaven. And we wait and we hope. And we

  340. have just sung about it. His glorious

  341. and majestic return. Peter is bearing

  342. testimony. He's giving witness about

  343. this. Verse eight. And God who knows the

  344. heart. Did you know God knows your

  345. heart?

  346. He knows my heart. He knows your heart.

  347. If you're anything like me, that's a

  348. scary thought.

  349. But this is what makes the gospel so

  350. beautiful.

  351. This is what makes the grace, the mercy,

  352. and the love of Jesus so beautiful.

  353. That despite my heart,

  354. when I'm covered by the blood of Jesus,

  355. when I place faith in the lamb of God

  356. who's come to take away the sins of the

  357. world, faith in him, not in my ability,

  358. not in my strength, not in my education,

  359. not in my wealth, not in my accolades,

  360. my goals, my accomplishment, but when I

  361. place faith in him, God looks at me and

  362. what does he see? He sees the perfect

  363. blood of his son

  364. that covers me, that protects me, that

  365. seals

  366. me. And so, what does that mean for me?

  367. Hold that thought. We'll get there in

  368. just a moment.

  369. So, God, who knows the heart bore

  370. witness to them by giving them the Holy

  371. Spirit just as he also did to us. He

  372. made this. This is so important because

  373. this is Peter laying down the evidence

  374. and telling the Pharisees, "This is why

  375. your argument falls apart. It has no

  376. standing. It bears no foundation because

  377. God made no distinction between the Jews

  378. and the Gentiles, cleansing their hearts

  379. by faith." Now then, and Peter really

  380. gets to it here. Now then, why are you

  381. testing God? by putting a yoke on the

  382. disciples necks that neither our

  383. ancestors nor we have been able to bear.

  384. What Peter is saying is when you are

  385. adding to the gospel, you're making it

  386. impossible for people to encounter the

  387. risen savior because you yourself can't

  388. even obey the law. We can't obey the

  389. law. Our ancestors, the patriarchs, the

  390. role models of the faith couldn't even

  391. obey the law. So why are you adding to

  392. the gospel as if it's possible for

  393. humanity to save ourselves?

  394. Verse 11, on the contrary,

  395. we believe that we are saved through the

  396. grace of the Lord Jesus in the same way

  397. they are. And all God's people said,

  398. >> Lord, bless your word. Holy Spirit,

  399. would you stir our hearts?

  400. You know, you and I, we're a people of

  401. ambiguity.

  402. And we're a people of ambiguity because

  403. ambiguity teaches us that we can

  404. discover our own truth.

  405. It tells us that however we believe and

  406. what we perceive about a situation, as

  407. long as we believe, it is the truth. But

  408. what you'll really discover is when you

  409. attempt to find truth, you discover that

  410. your own truth is really no truth at

  411. all.

  412. And the reason that's important is

  413. because someone somewhere

  414. has to be the one who establishes truth.

  415. Someone somewhere has to be the one who

  416. establishes the foundation by which we

  417. experience, perceive, and live in this

  418. reality. And it's not you or I. Because

  419. if it was, we would have differing

  420. opinions.

  421. We would have battles over who's right,

  422. who's wrong, and there would be

  423. conflict. there would be division. Your

  424. truth and my truth can't coexist. There

  425. can only be his truth, the truth, which

  426. is the truth of God. The truth that is

  427. revealed to us in the scriptures. It

  428. reminds me of a story in the book of

  429. Exodus. If you remember that story in

  430. Exodus chapter 32, Moses is up on Mount

    Exodus 32 chapter mention

  431. Si and he's having this majestic and

  432. glorious encounter with the Lord. And

  433. while he's up there, the people of

  434. Israel grow impatient. How many of us

  435. have ever grown impatient before?

  436. And as they grow impatient, they go

  437. before Aaron, Moses's brother, and they

  438. tell him, "Moses is taking too long. We

  439. don't want to wait on him. We don't want

  440. to wait on our God, the very God who we

  441. have seen miracles, signs, and wonders

  442. from, the one who set us free from

  443. Egypt. We no longer want to wait on him.

  444. Make us an idol that we can bow down to

  445. and worship." And many of us know the

  446. rest of the story. They gather their

  447. gold

  448. and out of that we have the golden calf

  449. and Moses is on his way down from the

  450. mountain. He's carrying the tablets, the

  451. Ten Commandments.

  452. And the scripture says that he begins to

  453. hear a ruckus in the camp

  454. and Moses is intrigued. He wonders

  455. what's going on. We don't really know

  456. what was actually happening in his mind,

  457. but maybe he was thinking there's a

  458. celebration. They know I'm coming down

  459. from the mountain and and and they're

  460. ready to break out into praise. Look,

  461. God has given us the commandments, the

  462. foundation by which our people and the

  463. nations of the world will be blessed.

  464. But Moses finally gets to the base of

  465. that mountain. He sees the camp of the

  466. Israelites. And I love this. The the

  467. story continues and it says that Moses

  468. saw the people running wild.

  469. It's this picture that's being painted

  470. like an untamed animal

  471. when we when we rebel against God. When

  472. we choose our way over God's way. When

  473. we choose the lies of the world over the

  474. truth of God's word. When when we say,

  475. "I will choose salvation for myself

  476. rather than the one who is the author of

  477. my salvation." We are like untamed

  478. animals

  479. running rampant and running wild.

  480. And then we have this line in the sand

  481. moment.

  482. Moses is visibly upset. And if you know

  483. that story, what does he do with the

  484. tablets? He throws them on the ground.

  485. God will deal with him later about that.

  486. And Moses has this line in the sand

  487. moment and he tells the Israelite

  488. people, he says, "Those who want to be

  489. serious about God, come over here.

  490. And those who want to remain in the lie

  491. of the perception that you are in

  492. control of your own destiny, that you

  493. are in control of your future in terms

  494. of salvation and God's kingdom, stay

  495. over there. And the scripture says that

  496. the ground opened up and swallowed those

  497. who would rebel against the Lord. Here's

  498. what that tells us. That Moses, that God

  499. doesn't allow neutrality.

  500. After what was a clear rebellion, the

  501. people publicly align themselves with

  502. the Lord or they align themselves

  503. against the Lord. There is no middle

  504. ground with Christ.

  505. There is no quiet faith.

  506. You either step into what God is doing

  507. or you step out into what you are doing.

  508. And let me tell you, as long as you step

  509. out into what you are doing, you will

  510. fail every time. You might have worldly

  511. success. You might experience some good

  512. things here this side of eternity. But

  513. at the end of the day, it will be your

  514. undoing.

  515. This is why the disciples chose to

  516. settle it once and for all. We're not

  517. going to have false gospels going

  518. forward and deceiving people of what

  519. salvation is. And did you know today

  520. church false gospels still go forward

  521. all over the world even in churches

  522. today there are so many false gospels

  523. that are going forward moving people

  524. into a false sense of security. Moving

  525. people to believe in a Jesus that is not

  526. the Jesus of the Bible. The God who is

  527. not the true God of creation. And they

  528. might use the same language you and I

  529. do. They might use the same words and

  530. vocabulary you and I do. But when you

  531. define those terms, because words have

  532. meaning, and those meanings are

  533. absolutely important, you discover

  534. you're not as close as you think.

  535. And this is what the disciples are

  536. getting at. Because whenever we make the

  537. gospel unclear,

  538. people will begin to fill in the gaps on

  539. their own.

  540. And when they do that, make no mistake,

  541. the gospel will be distorted.

  542. So, here's what I want to do with the

  543. rest of our time. We're going to go back

  544. to our passage. We're going to draw out

  545. some truths that I believe were relevant

  546. then that are absolutely relevant for

  547. today to help us walk in the truth of

  548. the gospel to help us have some

  549. self-reflection on how do you view the

  550. gospel? How are you sharing the gospel

  551. with others? And why it is only only the

  552. gospel of Jesus Christ that changes

  553. lives. So, if you're taking notes,

  554. here's the first scene we want to draw

  555. out. Don't add to what Jesus already

  556. finished.

  557. It's been phrased this way. Jesus plus

  558. nothing equals everything.

  559. You don't need Jesus plus something

  560. else. Jesus plus your gifting, Jesus

  561. plus whatever it is that you believe.

  562. It's Jesus plus nothing equals

  563. everything. And so, I want to unpack

  564. that a bit more. more. Go back with me

  565. to verse one.

  566. Some men came down from Judea and began

  567. to teach the brothers, "Unless you are

  568. circumcised according to the custom

  569. prescribed by Moses, you cannot be

  570. saved." At first glance, maybe this

  571. doesn't sound outrageous.

  572. Well, weren't first century Jews already

  573. doing that? Yes, they were in accordance

  574. with Mosaic law, accordance with the

  575. covenant God and Moses made. These are

  576. men from Judea. They had high spiritual

  577. standing. They likely believed in Jesus.

  578. They're not denying Christ outright, but

  579. they are adding to him.

  580. And when you add to Jesus, I want you to

  581. hear me now. When you add to Jesus, it

  582. calls into question your devotion to

  583. him. It calls into question your faith.

  584. And this is exactly the problem because

  585. the moment you begin to add something to

  586. what Jesus has already declared is

  587. finished, you no longer have the gospel.

  588. You're preaching another gospel.

  589. And what they were saying is this. Jesus

  590. is not enough.

  591. You need Jesus plus this.

  592. But church, I want to remind us that

  593. Jesus is enough.

  594. He is all that we will ever need. For

  595. every battle we face, for every trial we

  596. endure, for every valley that we go

  597. through, for every dark moment that

  598. comes against us, you know just as well

  599. as I do. I won't sugarcoat it. Life is

  600. rough. Life is hard. Family's difficult.

  601. Marriage is difficult. Raising kids is

  602. hard.

  603. Some of us are in jobs we don't like.

  604. We're in marriages that we wish they

  605. could get better. Our health is not

  606. where we want it to be. There's a battle

  607. in our mind about who we look at the mi

  608. who we look and what stares us back from

  609. the mirror every single day. Like life

  610. is rough.

  611. And that's a result of the sin that

  612. exists in the world.

  613. And we talked about this during our

  614. sermon series from Habach. Some of us,

  615. and I don't I I I hope I never come

  616. across this way, but I I don't attempt

  617. to come across as someone who who knows

  618. everything, cuz I don't. My wife will

  619. say, "You don't know nothing." No, I

  620. hope she doesn't say that.

  621. But I know this.

  622. I know the God of creation. I know the

  623. savior of the world. And I know that no

  624. matter what we face, what we face may

  625. not get better.

  626. But if Jesus is by my side, that's all

  627. that I need because he gives me hope. He

  628. gives me strength. He gives me guidance.

  629. Why would I add to that? Why would I

  630. say, "Jesus, you're not enough." Now, I

  631. get it. I get it. Sometimes it does not

  632. feel like Jesus is enough.

  633. That's the reality of human emotions.

  634. That's the reality of the nature of the

  635. sinful world that we live in. The

  636. psalmist declared that before the face

  637. of God. It doesn't feel like you're

  638. enough right now, God. This is difficult

  639. for me. But what's the difference

  640. between one who has dug their heels on

  641. the foundation of God's truth? Who

  642. understands what it means to be set

  643. apart by the grace of Jesus and the

  644. grace of Jesus alone? It means that in

  645. my questions, in my bitterness, in my

  646. emotions, in my anger,

  647. I'm still going to seek after the Lord.

  648. Because what's the alternative? trust in

  649. myself. I got myself into the situation.

  650. The cards have just been dealt that way.

  651. I need help. I need direction. And yes,

  652. the situation may not get better, but

  653. I'll have strength to endure. My focus

  654. will shift.

  655. >> My perspective will be different. So, I

  656. don't want to add to that.

  657. As I was going over this, it made me

  658. think of the Mona Lisa.

  659. Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo da

  660. Vinci in the 1500s and the Mona Lisa by

  661. art historians and enthusiasts. This is

  662. what the quote that I read that the Mona

  663. Lisa is the best known, most visited,

  664. most written about, most sung about work

  665. of art in all the world.

  666. And could you imagine someone visiting

  667. the Lou in Paris, taking down the Mona

  668. Lisa and said, "I can make it better."

  669. and then begin to paint over it.

  670. People would go nuts.

  671. Where's the church going nuts about

  672. people who bring in a false gospel and

  673. saying, "I CAN MAKE IT better because

  674. Jesus is not enough." This is why Paul

  675. and Barnabas and Peter was so stirred.

  676. We really don't see this type of passion

  677. and stirring off the pages. But right

  678. here in verse two, it says, "After Paul

  679. and Barnabas had engaged them in serious

  680. argument and debate, Paul and Barnabas

  681. and some others were appointed to go up

  682. to the apostles and elders in Jerusalem

  683. about this issue." You know what scene

  684. is being painted here? These men from

  685. Judea

  686. had a public service to deliver a false

  687. gospel. And so what do Paul and Barnabas

  688. do? They have public debate to bring

  689. correction.

  690. When there is a false gospel that is

  691. shared publicly, it takes the church

  692. publicly to share the truth. We cannot

  693. be silent.

  694. We cannot sit on our laurels and let the

  695. enemy declare what is false. And so we

  696. must be careful of any version of

  697. Christianity that says Jesus is good,

  698. but you also need this

  699. because no matter how close it sounds,

  700. no matter how counterfeit

  701. it looks, it's still not the real thing.

  702. So the question right that's now on the

  703. table is, well, who's right? Who

  704. actually saves? And so this is what we

  705. see. Here's the second thing that we see

  706. that we are to trust what God has

  707. already made clear. Now, now this is

  708. what I love. I want us to go to verse

  709. six because remember Paul or Peter

  710. begins to testify. He begins to bear

  711. witness. And he doesn't start with

  712. theory. He doesn't start with opinion.

  713. He doesn't start with well a bunch of us

  714. got together and this is how we think it

  715. should go. No. What does he do? He

  716. starts with a move of God. He starts

  717. with truth. Right here in verse six, it

  718. says, "The apostles and the elders ga

  719. gathered to consider this ma matter.

  720. After there had been much debate, Peter

  721. stood up and said to them." Now, the

  722. rest of that is Peter declaring what God

  723. has already done.

  724. Part of standing on the truth of God's

  725. word, part of experiencing and living

  726. out the truth of the gospel is to

  727. recognize what God is already doing.

  728. And this is not new to the church. It

  729. has been happening since the beginning,

  730. since creation.

  731. God has been moving and God has been

  732. working. And the way God saves today was

  733. the way he saved then. It has always

  734. been about faith in the Lord. It has

  735. always been about belief in the lamb of

  736. God who has come to take away the sins

  737. of the world. It has often been phrased

  738. this way. New Testament over here, Old

  739. Testament over here, the life, death,

  740. resurrection, and ascension of Jesus

  741. here. Both were saved the same way by

  742. believing in the Savior. We believe in

  743. the Savior who has come. The Old

  744. Testament believe in the Savior who was

  745. to come.

  746. This is what the book of Hebrews

  747. tells us in chapters 11 and 12. And so

  748. Peter,

  749. he is declaring that we're to trust what

  750. God has already made clear. That the

  751. issue, the issue at hand, it isn't

  752. what's external.

  753. The issue is what's internal.

  754. Because you can clean up your life all

  755. you want. You can look good on the

  756. outside. You can do everything right and

  757. your heart still be evil and filled with

  758. sin. This was one of the major uh uh uh

  759. points of conflict Jesus had with the

  760. Pharisees throughout his ministry. He

  761. called them whitewashed tombs. You look

  762. fancy and put together on the outside,

  763. but but underneath you are rotten. You

  764. are decaying because there's no faith in

  765. you.

  766. There's no true repentance in you.

  767. The law can't save us.

  768. Paul's entire argument in his letter to

  769. the church in Rome is that the law is

  770. there to show us that we can't save

  771. ourselves, that we need a savior. And if

  772. we can't save ourselves, we certainly

  773. can't add to the gospel.

  774. You don't clean yourself up so that God

  775. will accept you. I want you to watch

  776. this.

  777. God accepts you through Christ and then

  778. he begins to transform you through the

  779. inside out. And this is what happens in

  780. real time as Paul and Barnabas are on

  781. their way to Jerusalem. They go and they

  782. share with the Gentiles. And what do we

  783. see? The Gentiles are filled with joy.

  784. So God has made this clear.

  785. And so then what do we do about Roland?

  786. Should I try? Should I not try? Like,

  787. like, what does that mean for me post

  788. faith, postcon conversion? I've

  789. repented. I've been baptized. What's

  790. next for me? If if I don't need to do

  791. anything to be saved, then what am I

  792. called to do? I I'm glad you asked that

  793. because here's the third truth that we

  794. see.

  795. Don't ever turn grace into an excuse.

  796. I know I've been there before. Very

  797. early on in my Christian walk, like many

  798. of you, you're still getting

  799. you're still understanding the the

  800. implications of the gospel in your life.

  801. You're still growing in theological

  802. distinctives. You're still learning

  803. doctrine and what that means, not just

  804. for a spiritual life, but for all areas

  805. of your life. You're learning those

  806. things. And and if you're anything like

  807. me, in those very early years, you you

  808. look at grace and you think, "Well, this

  809. is an excuse to sin because God will

  810. forgive me anyway." You ever live life

  811. like that before?

  812. I mean, at the end of the days, if I'm

  813. on my deathbed and I cry out to God to

  814. save me, let me just live life the way I

  815. want.

  816. And watch what Peter says because Peter

  817. Peter knows the hearts of men.

  818. Likely Peter's endured this before, like

  819. many of us have. Look at verse 10.

  820. Why are you testing God

  821. by putting a yoke on the disciples necks

  822. that neither our ancestors nor we have

  823. been able to bear? That is strong

  824. language. Those are fighting words from

  825. Peter. And whenever you add to the

  826. gospel, whenever you try to make it

  827. palatable for yourself, you are testing

  828. God. And let me tell you something, when

  829. you test God, you will fail at that

  830. every single time.

  831. And Peter, he's bringing to the surface

  832. what what every honest reader of the Old

  833. Testament should see, that the law was

  834. never meant to save. It's all to reveal

  835. sin. It exposes our inability. We cannot

  836. save ourselves. It shows our need for

  837. grace.

  838. And so the way this looks like for us

  839. today

  840. is very much in principle the same way

  841. that it looked like for Paul, Barnabas,

  842. and Peter as they had this confrontation

  843. and this conflict. For us today, we'll

  844. say, "Well, we're going to get married

  845. anyway, so it's okay."

  846. Well, we love each other, so it must be

  847. fine. We're not hurting anybody, so it

  848. must be okay. It makes me happy, so it

  849. must be okay. And it's not the gospel

  850. plus your happiness. It's not the gospel

  851. plus you eventually get married. It's

  852. not the gospel because it's not hurting

  853. anybody. No. No, no. It's Jesus and

  854. Jesus and that is it. And Jesus has laid

  855. out his rule and his law and his

  856. standards and his precepts. So don't

  857. test God. Can I just say this for a

  858. moment? Some of us are testing God this

  859. morning.

  860. We're walking in sin and we're

  861. attempting to justify it because we want

  862. to play both worlds. We want to walk in

  863. line with God because you believe I

  864. believe that you believe that you love

  865. the Lord and praise God for that. But

  866. you're testing God and deceiving

  867. yourself because you want to play both

  868. sides. You want to play the world and

  869. your pride gets in the way. The reason

  870. people reject the gospel, let me just

  871. say this, the reason people reject the

  872. gospel is not because they don't believe

  873. it's true. The reason people reject the

  874. gospel is because it demands something

  875. from us. It demands obedience. It

  876. demands self-sacrifice. Thematically

  877. throughout the scriptures, what do we

  878. see? Crucify the flesh.

  879. You and I have to put the flesh to

  880. death. We have to stomp it out. The

  881. desires of our heart,

  882. the pride of life, we have to stomp it

  883. out. Men, we lead the charge at home. We

  884. need to stomp it out.

  885. And we can expect to be the very people

  886. God has called us to be if all we ever

  887. do is attempt to justify our very lives.

  888. Now, I love this in verse 11. We'll

  889. close on this.

  890. Paul continues or Peter continues, "On

  891. the contrary, we believe that we now now

  892. this is what's so important. This is

  893. what's beautiful because Peter is a Jew

  894. or Gentile. He's a Jew. Now notice this.

  895. Peter flips the script. He says, "We,

  896. the Jews, are saved through the grace of

  897. the Lord Jesus in the same way the

  898. Gentiles are." Now, it would have been

  899. something for Peter to say, "The

  900. Gentiles are saved in the same way we

  901. are." But that was the Pharisees

  902. argument. Unless they do it this way,

  903. they cannot be saved. So Peter flips the

  904. script in order to bring home the point.

  905. No, no, no, no. It's not them becoming

  906. like us. It's us becoming like them.

  907. Because what do they understand that we

  908. don't? That it's all Jesus. It is only

  909. Jesus. Now, let me tell you why that's

  910. good news.

  911. Because it doesn't matter what you've

  912. done. It doesn't matter your past, your

  913. background. It doesn't matter how hard

  914. you've experienced life. And I know many

  915. of your stories and some of you have

  916. experienced some pain and some darkness

  917. and some evil and some sin.

  918. and you have felt that there's that

  919. there's no way out. The gospel speaks

  920. into that

  921. and Jesus boldly declares this anthem

  922. that is lifech changing this reality of

  923. the truth of the gospel. He says, "I am

  924. the way. I am the truth. I am the life.

  925. No one comes to the father except

  926. through me, Jesus. No one comes to the

  927. father except through Jesus." And maybe

  928. today that's what the Holy Spirit's

  929. calling you to do. Let's pray. Lord,

  930. thank you for your word.

  931. Thank you for the truth. Thank you for

  932. the transformation that we find in you.

  933. May you bless the remainder of our time

  934. this morning as we continue to gather,

  935. as we sing, as we celebrate.

  936. Lord, we pray that you would continue to

  937. call people out of death and sin to life

  938. eternal.

  939. All this we ask in Jesus Christ's name.

  940. All God's people said,
