  1. All right. Well, I'm glad you're here.

  2. If you have your Bibles, let's go ahead

  3. and open them up. We're going to be in

  4. Psalm 45 this morning. Psalm 45. If you

  5. have been with us over the last couple

  6. of summers, you know that we dedicate

  7. our summer months to diving into the

  8. book of Psalms. And if you're new with

  9. us, we welcome you as we dive into Psalm

  10. 45. Now, let me tell you why over the

  11. last four summers, we've taken a moment

  12. to really dive into the book of Psalms.

  13. The Psalms are written by various

  14. authors, incredibly written, powerfully

  15. written, and it includes everything from

  16. deep, heartfelt prayers

  17. to prayers of lament. If you remember

  18. last summer, we focused on a p on a

  19. specific portion of the Psalms that

  20. dealt with prayers of lament. And I

  21. don't know about you, but what appeals

  22. to me most about prayers of lament is

  23. that they are raw, they're honest, and

  24. they're open truthfully before the Lord.

  25. Which, by the way, the Lord already

  26. knows the depths of your heart.

  27. >> So, if you refuse to be open and

  28. transparent before the Lord, you're not

  29. hiding anything from him. But I think

  30. there is something powerful and

  31. something unique that happens when we

  32. just bear our hearts before the Lord.

  33. when we're dealing with maybe emotions

  34. of bitterness or maybe anger or

  35. confusion or even doubt where we take it

  36. before the Lord and it's okay to say

  37. why.

  38. It's okay to say Lord what are you doing

  39. in all of this? It's okay to say God I

  40. don't understand your plan or your

  41. purpose. But the goal is that we don't

  42. linger there. The goal is those

  43. questions, those feelings, those

  44. emotions become a catalyst for a greater

  45. pursuit and a greater devotion to the

  46. Lord. And so, as we dive into Psalm 45

  47. here, we're going to see a psalm written

  48. by the sons of Kora. And what I think is

  49. amazing about that is if you're familiar

  50. with what took place in Numbers chapter

    Numbers 16 chapter mention

  51. 16, the sons of Kora rebelled against

  52. Moses's leadership.

  53. They rebelled against his guidance, his

  54. influence, and the way in which he was

  55. leading the people of God. And in order

  56. to pass judgment upon the sons of Kora,

  57. in order to quell the rebellion against

  58. God's chosen individual and really

  59. against God's chosen plan, the scripture

  60. tells us this. This is where we get into

  61. those dark areas of scripture that the

  62. earth opened up and swallowed them in.

  63. But here's what's incredible.

  64. It didn't swallow all the sons of Kora

  65. because centuries later there was a

  66. remnant of the people of that rebellion

  67. that continued to exist. And I think

  68. this is so ironic. This is what we call

  69. uh how God changes people's lives

  70. because you have a people that were

  71. known for rebellion

  72. now become a people who are known for

  73. worship. Psalms 45 is authored by the

  74. sons of Kora. And I think why that is so

  75. incredible incredible is because I

  76. believe that really hits home for a lot

  77. of our stories.

  78. Many of us may have been children of

  79. rebellion.

  80. But because of Jesus and his mercy and

  81. his grace and the gospel message and

  82. salvation and rescue and redemption,

  83. we're no longer children of

  84. disobedience. were no longer sons or

  85. daughters of rebellion, but were

  86. children who live high in the name of

  87. Jesus and who declare that he indeed is

  88. a lover of my soul.

  89. The one who transforms me, who changes

  90. me,

  91. who resurrects me out of death and sin

  92. and moves me towards life eternal. And

  93. as long as I have breath in my lungs, I

  94. will pursue the Lord with everything in

  95. me.

  96. So, in Psalm 45,

  97. there's 17 verses here, but what I want

  98. to do is I want to read you I want to

  99. book in this psalm. We'll have verse 17

  100. on the screen here, but I want to read

  101. you verse one, verse 17. And then what

  102. we'll do is we'll move through the psalm

  103. by looking at some movement and some

  104. truth that the sons of Kora in this

  105. picture of a marriage that they're

  106. painting in Psalms 45. A marriage that

  107. likely is part of the Davidic dynasty

  108. that somewhere down the line of David's

  109. family, you have a wedding take place.

  110. And the sons of Kora likely wrote this

  111. as a wedding song, as a wedding poem,

  112. something to be read to the bride and

  113. groom and those who were in attendance.

  114. And I want you to notice something as we

  115. walk through the psalm here in just a

  116. moment. I want you to notice that though

  117. it is written in [clears throat] dealing

  118. with an earthly king and an earthly

  119. bride,

  120. that there is messianic picture. There's

  121. a messianic picture written all over

  122. this. Psalms 45 points us to Jesus. As a

  123. matter of fact, the author of Hebrews

  124. will actually quote Psalm 45 in

  125. reference to Jesus. So, let me read

  126. verse one. It won't be on the screen.

  127. We'll throw verse 17 on there. These are

  128. the bookends of Psalm 45. Let's wrap our

  129. minds. Let's wrap our hearts around it.

  130. Verse one. Psalm 45.

  131. My heart is moved

  132. by a noble theme. Church, what moves

  133. your heart?

  134. What stirs you in the morning?

  135. In the midst of your routine, in the

  136. midst of your habits, in the midst of

  137. life,

  138. what is it that ignites a fire in you?

  139. For some of us, the very thing that

  140. ignites a fire in us is the very thing

  141. that leads us further away from the

  142. Lord.

  143. But what Psalm 45 is going to do, Psalm

  144. 45 is going to remind us

  145. that there is one aim,

  146. that there is one pursuit, that there is

  147. one person we should behold, that if

  148. there is anything that is going to

  149. ignite passion within us, may it be

  150. rooted in whom Psalm 45 ultimately is

  151. written about. My heart is moved by a

  152. noble theme.

  153. As I recite my verses to the king, my

  154. tongue is a pen of a skillful writer.

  155. It's not just about what we think. It's

  156. not just about how we feel. It's what we

  157. confess.

  158. It's what's going on in our mind and

  159. filtering down into our heart that

  160. manifests itself in our hands and our

  161. feet. Do your choices, do your

  162. decisions, do your actions, do your

  163. words, do your thought, does the path of

  164. your life demonstrate right here in

  165. Psalm 45, the very thing that ignites a

  166. movement of the heart, is it a noble

  167. theme?

  168. Because what'll take place here

  169. is a revealing of glory.

  170. And it's not your glory, nor is it my

  171. glory. It's not the glory of things that

  172. are created, but it's the glory of the

  173. one who spoke creation into existence.

  174. And what we find is it's his glory

  175. that should rest in our hearts. It's a

  176. desire for the praise of his name.

  177. Let's go to verse 17.

  178. I will cause

  179. your name to be remembered for all

  180. generations. Whose name? His name.

  181. Now notice the psalmist is saying, "I

  182. will cause your name to be remembered."

  183. So there's action,

  184. there's movement, there's an

  185. understanding that the reader and the

  186. audience must step into what God is

  187. doing in order to perpetuate the glory

  188. of his name, the worship of his name,

  189. and the praise of who he is. He

  190. continues,

  191. therefore the peoples,

  192. and what peoples is he talking about?

  193. every tribe, every tongue, every nation.

  194. Those who would hear the word, receive

  195. the word, live out the word, proclaim

  196. the word,

  197. the peoples will praise you forever and

  198. ever. And all God's people said, "Amen."

  199. Lord, would you bless your word? Holy

  200. Spirit, would you stir our hearts this

  201. morning?

  202. Psalm 45

  203. is a beautiful picture

  204. of what it means

  205. to have a life set apart

  206. for, in, with, and through the Lord. And

  207. what I love here is in all the language

  208. that is provided and all the words and

  209. the verbiage that is authored here what

  210. what you discovered is there is no

  211. earthly king that perfectly fulfills

  212. what is being written about and that's

  213. part of the psalmist point

  214. because as this is written to ancient

  215. Israel a people who were enslaved a

  216. people who had been persecuted a people

  217. who had endured battle after battle, war

  218. after war, who had a common enemy that

  219. were constantly coming against them,

  220. that these people would ultimately know

  221. that our hope does not rest in an

  222. earthly king.

  223. And the way we would contextualize that

  224. for us today is that our hope doesn't

  225. rest in the things of this world. Our

  226. hope doesn't rest in elections. Our hope

  227. doesn't rest in bank accounts. Our hope

  228. doesn't rest in your wealth. Our hope

  229. doesn't rest in your gifts. Those are

  230. all great things. Those might even be

  231. blessed things, but they're not ultimate

  232. things. Where our hope rest is in the

  233. King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. And

  234. this is what Psalm 45 points us to.

  235. Where does your hope rest?

  236. Because as this song would have been

  237. read, as it song would have been

  238. celebrated, as the audience would have

  239. seen the bride and the groom in the

  240. midst of this wedding ceremony and

  241. celebration and this song being declared

  242. of their love over them, there would

  243. have been a greater recognition that

  244. there is a bridegroom in heaven.

  245. And for us, this side of the cross, this

  246. side of the resurrection, there's a

  247. bridegroom in heaven who one day will

  248. return for his bride.

  249. And that's you and that's me. That's our

  250. brothers and sisters across town. Our

  251. brothers and sisters down 281. Our

  252. brothers and sisters down 359. Our

  253. brothers and sisters across the state,

  254. across this nation, across the world who

  255. are lifting up the name of Jesus. One

  256. day this king will come to receive his

  257. bride. So here's what I want to do.

  258. I want us to go back through Psalm 45.

  259. And I want us to focus on some truths

  260. that are taking place here. Truths that

  261. will help us develop deeper affections

  262. for the Lord. Truths that will help us

  263. take what is said and done in this place

  264. into our Monday morning, into our

  265. Tuesday sales call, into our

  266. conversation with the cashier at the

  267. grocery store. And it'll teach us that

  268. what God does here, he stirs in here so

  269. that it might be active out there. So if

  270. you're taking notes, here's the first

  271. thing we want to recognize. Behold

  272. the king.

  273. I love this.

  274. It's not on the screen, but I'll read it

  275. to you. This is verse two.

  276. Notice what the psalmist writes

  277. in regards to beholding

  278. the king.

  279. What you value

  280. and what you treasure is the very thing

  281. that you behold.

  282. Notice how the psalmist beholds this

  283. king. You are the most handsome of men.

  284. My wife tells me that every morning.

  285. Grace flows from your lips. Father's Day

  286. is coming up. Men, does grace flow from

  287. your lips to your bride?

  288. Do you speak peace and blessing and

  289. encouragements to your bride? I digress.

  290. You are the most handsome of men. Grace

  291. flows from your lips. Therefore,

  292. therefore, God has blessed you

  293. forever.

  294. There is a beholding of the king.

  295. There's a recognition

  296. of who the king is. And what we find

  297. throughout the scripture, this is

  298. thematic. This is a pattern that you see

  299. from Old Testament to New. You see that

  300. beauty is often connected with

  301. character.

  302. that when we read things like this in

  303. the scripture

  304. about the beauty

  305. of your frame or how handsome is your

  306. face or how beautiful are your lips,

  307. that's not just talking about outward

  308. and physical things. But the picture

  309. it's painting is something more

  310. beautiful and something connected to the

  311. spirit, to our character. to

  312. righteousness, to holiness, to glory.

  313. The king is beautiful because the king

  314. is everything the king ought to be. And

  315. this is what we find happening in the

  316. rest of the psalm. The king is referred

  317. to as a mighty warrior. Verse three,

  318. majestic and splendid.

  319. The king is triumphant. The king is the

  320. cause of truth. Not just one who

  321. proclaims truth, [snorts]

  322. but the king himself is the cause of

  323. truth. The king is humble. The king is

  324. just. The king is miraculous, church. Do

  325. you behold that king?

  326. Or do you behold a king of your own

  327. making?

  328. Do you behold the king of finances?

  329. The king of pride, the king of gossip,

  330. the king of lust, the king of

  331. popularity, the king of social media.

  332. What king do you behold? I pray it's the

  333. king of Psalm 45.

  334. And if you didn't know, this isn't some

  335. random king.

  336. This isn't some fill-in-theblank with

  337. any name sort of king. This king is the

  338. only king. He's who we call the king of

  339. kings and the lord of lords. And this

  340. king has a name and his name is Jesus.

  341. Do you behold that king?

  342. Second thing that we see here, and I

  343. really want to spend some time on this,

  344. is that not only are we to behold the

  345. king,

  346. but we are to become his bride.

  347. Now, if you're a man in the room, you

  348. hear that and you say, "Roland, what in

  349. the world are you talking about? Become

  350. his bride? I only have one bride, and I

  351. wake up to her every single morning."

  352. But let's throw some biblical language

  353. on here. Let's throw some theological

  354. terms. Look at some doctrine on what it

  355. means to become the bride of the king.

  356. Remember Psalm 45 is written as this

  357. wedding song, as this love song

  358. between a king and his bride down the

  359. Davidic line. And who would who would

  360. eventually come from the line of David?

  361. The king Jesus Christ. And the scripture

  362. tells us that Jesus is the head of the

  363. church, the bridegroom.

  364. And if Jesus is the bridegroom of the

  365. church, what does that make the church?

  366. >> His bride.

  367. That means that that you and I as we

  368. engage and experience and walk in and

  369. place our faith and live out this

  370. relationship with Jesus Christ. It means

  371. that we are walking hand in hand with

  372. them. And in every wedding ceremony I

  373. do, I always love to focus on this

  374. aspect of of marriage is that the

  375. marriage covenant, the marriage

  376. relationship between one man and one

  377. woman for life is one of the greatest

  378. earthly pictures that we have of the

  379. gospel of Jesus Christ. It's two

  380. individuals covenanting together, being

  381. united physically and becoming one. No

  382. longer divided by individualism. No

  383. longer divided nor separated but joining

  384. together in one spirit together in one

  385. faith in unity in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  386. Church, this is who we are with the

  387. Lord.

  388. It's not Roland separate from Jesus, but

  389. it's Roland and Jesus together. And

  390. here's what I love specifically what we

  391. read in the New Testament. The scripture

  392. tells us

  393. that the spirit of God in the Old

  394. Testament dwelt where? Do you all

  395. remember that the presence of God dwelt

  396. where? It dwelt in the temple in the

  397. holy of holies above the ark of the

  398. covenant. Which is why the people of

  399. Israel needed the Levitical priesthood

  400. to go and offer atonement on the day of

  401. atonement to sacrifice for the sins that

  402. they have committed before the Lord.

  403. But then Jesus comes on the scene. He

  404. lives the life we couldn't live. He dies

  405. the death that we deserve. He resurrects

  406. in glory from the grave. Three days

  407. later, 40 days after continued ministry

  408. here on earth, he ascends. And now we

  409. wait and we hope for his return. And

  410. because of that, the scripture says that

  411. as the spirit dwelt upon the church in

  412. Acts chapter 2 on the day of Pentecost,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  413. that God's presence, God's spirit no

  414. longer dwells in a temple made by human

  415. hands. But where does God's spirit

  416. dwell?

  417. God's spirit dwells in you.

  418. So as he is the bridegroom and I am the

  419. bride, it's not me over here and God

  420. over there, but it's through his life,

  421. death, and resurrection, his ascension,

  422. and our hope and his return that I am

  423. united with the Lord. And so I JUST

  424. DON'T BEHOLD THE KING of glory.

  425. I just don't look to him in his

  426. greatness and his splendor,

  427. but I know that I am a part of who he is

  428. and what it is about. And I think

  429. here's where it can really hit home for

  430. us because one of the greatest dangers

  431. in life, one of the greatest dangers of

  432. of Christianity is we can become so

  433. fascinated with the things of God more

  434. than God himself.

  435. We can seek and crave and pursue the

  436. blessings of God rather than God

  437. himself.

  438. And here's a challenge I want to leave

  439. you with this morning.

  440. When was the last time you stood in awe

  441. of God?

  442. Let's go back to verse six real quick.

  443. Verse six says, "Your throne,

  444. God, is forever

  445. and ever.

  446. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter

  447. of

  448. justice."

  449. This is where the book of Hebrews would

  450. appeal to Psalm 45

  451. and tell the New Testament audience,

  452. "This is Jesus.

  453. This isn't random. This wasn't just a

  454. statement for an earthly king in the

  455. Davidic dynasty. It was pointing

  456. forward. And who it pointed forward to

  457. is here right now in the midst of us.

  458. Have you become his bride? Here's what

  459. it takes.

  460. When a bride

  461. was received by her bridegroom in the

  462. context of Psalm 45, in the context of

  463. ancient Israel, here's what it meant. It

  464. meant that she left everything behind.

  465. She left loyalties.

  466. She left family.

  467. She left riches.

  468. She is called to draw near to her

  469. bridegroom. She is called to delight in

  470. him. And do you know what that's the

  471. language of church? That's the language

  472. of growing spiritually.

  473. That's the language of disciplehip.

  474. To become his bride. It means laying

  475. everything aside for the glory of his

  476. name. That means repenting of your sin.

  477. That means looking to his holiness and

  478. righteousness and making the decision to

  479. walk and to thrive in obedience to his

  480. name, not as a way to merit or earn his

  481. approval,

  482. but as a way to experience the greatest

  483. type of joy in a relationship with him.

  484. When I think about this, it it makes me

  485. think about Paul's words in the New

  486. Testament over and over again.

  487. that talk about the denial of the flesh,

  488. that talk about putting to death

  489. the sin in my life,

  490. and if I'm going to leave behind

  491. loyalties, if I'm going to leave behind

  492. everything that might hinder me from

  493. fully walking in obedience as the bride

  494. of Christ, not just as a church body,

  495. but as individual believers, as sons and

  496. daughters of God, God every day. It

  497. takes the intentionality and the

  498. discipline to crucify the flesh

  499. because as long as we remain on this

  500. side of heaven, there is a nature that

  501. exists in us.

  502. That nature is called the sin nature.

  503. And the sin nature, you know this just

  504. as well as I do, the sin nature wants to

  505. creep up. It wants to creep in and it

  506. wants to take over.

  507. Which is why Paul in his letter to the

  508. churches in Galatia say this. I have

  509. been crucified with Christ.

  510. Therefore, it is no longer I who live

  511. but Christ who lives in me. There is

  512. this beholding. I've been crucified with

  513. Christ. Christ lives in me. I'm becoming

  514. his bride. And then he says this, "And

  515. the life that I now live right now at

  516. this moment, I no longer live by my own

  517. whims and desires, but I live by faith

  518. in the son of God who loved me and gave

  519. his life for me." Christ did it for you.

  520. He did it for me so that he would call

  521. you his own. in church, if you don't get

  522. it, Jesus requires your surrender.

  523. He requires you to leave it all behind.

  524. And the question that we're faced with

  525. is is not whether Jesus is beautiful,

  526. but the question is, do you treasure

  527. him?

  528. The bride in this psalm, we'll read it

  529. in just a moment, the bride is adorned

  530. and prepared for her king. And so she

  531. comes joyfully. She comes willingly.

  532. Let's look at verse 10.

  533. Listen, daughter.

  534. Pay attention and consider.

  535. Forget your people and your father's

  536. house. Let's hit the pause button.

  537. Because we read that with modern eyes

  538. and we think, "What,

  539. Roland? There's no way I can forget my

  540. family. There's no way I can turn my

  541. back on them. This is where we need to

  542. battle against reading the scripture

  543. through western eyes.

  544. The Bible was written to an eastern

  545. people

  546. in Eastern culture

  547. which oftent times is completely

  548. opposite

  549. from what we experience in 2026 in

  550. western society.

  551. And this is why when we come to God's

  552. word, this is for free this morning.

  553. When we come to God's word, we have to

  554. understand several things. When was it

  555. written?

  556. Who was it written to? What things

  557. historically and culturally are taking

  558. place? Because until I understand those

  559. things, I'll never really grab hold of

  560. the context of what's taking place here.

  561. So, what in the world does a psalmist

  562. mean when the psalmist writes, "Forget

  563. your people and your father's house?"

  564. Let me put it simply for us. The

  565. psalmist is saying, "Have your

  566. priorities in order.

  567. Have your affections ordered correctly

  568. because when your affections are

  569. disordered, your worship will be

  570. disordered."

  571. And so in the context of marriage, this

  572. might this might rock some people a bit,

  573. but in the context of marriage, it's

  574. God,

  575. my wife,

  576. then my kids.

  577. It's not my kids before my wife. It's my

  578. wife before my kids.

  579. Because if I can model what biblical

  580. covenant is with my wife, then that

  581. filters into the relationship I have

  582. with my kids.

  583. And then really in the grand scheme of

  584. life, let me just kind of clue you in,

  585. give you a little sneak peek of how it

  586. works for me. And this is not unique to

  587. me. This is biblical. You can ask any

  588. God-fearing pastor. It's God,

  589. wife, children, then the church.

  590. I am grateful to shepherd you. I am

  591. grateful to pastor here. I've said this

  592. so many times. I pray this is the only

  593. church that I ever pastor.

  594. But this church will never take from me

  595. what belongs to my family.

  596. And when we become the bride of Christ,

  597. it means ordering our affections for

  598. him. So every act of obedience,

  599. every prayer, every moment of

  600. repentance, every gathering in this

  601. place, watch this, it's preparation

  602. for the ultimate wedding that will take

  603. place. Psalm 45 is read,

  604. it is sung, it's declared

  605. in a wedding that took place in ancient

  606. Israel. How cool will this be? the day

  607. that we go to be with the Lord in glory

  608. where we behold our king and we are

  609. actively part of his bride that Psalm 45

  610. is read and we not only hear it and

  611. agree with it, we experience the

  612. prophetic fulfillment of it. What a day

  613. that will be. And here's the last thing

  614. that we see.

  615. We're called to participate

  616. in his kingdom.

  617. Now, let me really drive this home.

  618. It's one thing to behold the king and

  619. and oftentimes I think we do a great job

  620. of that. We lift high the name of Jesus.

  621. I love when we gather in this place and

  622. we sing songs together. I've said this

  623. so many times. The reason I like to uh

  624. stand back there during service is

  625. because I get I get a view where the

  626. church is in front of me and I get to

  627. hear your voices and I get to see your

  628. hands raised and I get to see some of

  629. you clapping who get the spirit in you a

  630. little bit. I get to see those things. I

  631. get to experience those things because

  632. what we do here is not for the sake of

  633. just feeling good. Yes, we feel good

  634. from it. It's not just for the sake of

  635. filling up our spiritual bucket. That's

  636. part of it. The scripture says that that

  637. we gather to be equipped for the work of

  638. ministry. That that one of the role of

  639. the pastors is to equip the saints for

  640. the work of ministry. So, we gather in

  641. this place. We participate in its

  642. ministries so that we can be equipped

  643. for Monday morning.

  644. What God does here, he desires for you

  645. to live out there. But but but here's

  646. what's incredible. It's not just for the

  647. sake of those things. When we gather in

  648. this place, even now as you sit and

  649. listen and your spirit is opened and the

  650. Holy Spirit is maybe stirring you,

  651. challenging you, maybe convicting you,

  652. maybe holding you accountable. Maybe

  653. right now the Holy Spirit is is bringing

  654. to the surface some sins you need to

  655. repent of. Maybe for some of you that

  656. the Holy Spirit is resurrecting you out

  657. of death and sin. And for the first time

  658. ever, you're seeing clearly who the Lord

  659. is. And today is the day of your

  660. salvation. When all of this takes place,

  661. from the singing of songs to the

  662. listening of the word to participating

  663. in Bible studies to walking in the

  664. parking lot and hugging people that we

  665. haven't seen this past week, we are

  666. participating

  667. in what God is doing.

  668. We are actively being a part of the

  669. spirit moving and working. And do you

  670. know what that tells us? It tells us

  671. that we should never discount what we do

  672. for the kingdom.

  673. what you do serves a purpose

  674. because it's who you're doing it for and

  675. it's the king that we behold as we are

  676. actively part of his bride. So it's not

  677. that we should just look to Jesus and

  678. say, "Man, you are amazing. I'm so

  679. grateful." It's not that we should just

  680. gather together as part of his bride, as

  681. part of his people.

  682. But it's that we should step into what

  683. God is doing. We must participate in his

  684. kingdom. Go with me to verse 16.

  685. Your sons

  686. will succeed your ancestors.

  687. You will make them princes [snorts]

  688. throughout the land.

  689. I will cause your name to be remembered

  690. for all generations.

  691. Therefore, the peoples will praise you

  692. forever.

  693. and ever.

  694. Can you imagine hearing that? Men,

  695. married men, picture this with me.

  696. You're standing with your bride

  697. and you're hearing this declared over

  698. you. Your sons will succeed your

  699. ancestors,

  700. and you will make them princes

  701. throughout the land. I will cause your

  702. name to be remembered for all

  703. generations. Therefore, the peoples will

  704. praise you forever and ever.

  705. When I hear that, let me tell you what I

  706. don't think. I don't think there was a

  707. sense of self-p pride that filled the

  708. king.

  709. I think there was a sense

  710. and maybe even a deeper and greater

  711. understanding that one day there will

  712. come an individual

  713. who will be the fulfillment of this.

  714. And what does that mean for us? That

  715. means as we participate in the kingdom

  716. of God,

  717. as we recognize that the things that we

  718. do are not just for ourselves. If that's

  719. all that we ever if that's the only way

  720. we ever look at it, then we steal into

  721. self idolatry

  722. because we think, "Oh, the sermon is

  723. there to build me up. The worship is

  724. there to make me feel good." No, we sing

  725. not so that you would feel good. We sing

  726. so that God would be praised.

  727. We grow in the word not so that you

  728. would feel good, but we grow in the word

  729. so that God would be praised.

  730. And if all we ever do is look at life,

  731. look at the church, look at Christianity

  732. as an avenue by which I will be served,

  733. then we've missed it and we live in

  734. idolatry. But when we understand that it

  735. is all part of participating in his

  736. kingdom,

  737. then I become part of something that

  738. extends beyond me.

  739. I don't know when the Lord will return.

  740. He can return tomorrow. He can return a

  741. 100 years from now. He can return next

  742. week. The culture and society are always

  743. set up in such a way where we can look

  744. at the signs. We can look at what's

  745. happening in the culture and say, "Woo

  746. man, we're getting close to the Lord's

  747. return." And that's on purpose so that

  748. there will be a sense of urgency in us

  749. to get our right to get our lives right

  750. with the Lord and to go and tell people

  751. to get their life right with the Lord.

  752. My point is we don't know when Christ is

  753. coming back. And so as your pastor, I'm

  754. often confronted with this question that

  755. I ask myself. What will the grove look

  756. like when when all of us are gone?

  757. What will the grove look like in a 100

  758. years? What will the grove look like in

  759. 200 years?

  760. What will the grove look like in 10

  761. years?

  762. I pray

  763. that we participate in the kingdom so

  764. much so that this becomes a reality that

  765. our children

  766. will succeed us

  767. and they will be princes and princesses

  768. throughout the land not because of

  769. anything good in them but because

  770. they're children of the king.

  771. And it's through that that the name of

  772. Jesus will be remembered. So here's the

  773. question.

  774. What are you doing to build the kingdom?

  775. How are you participating in the

  776. kingdom?

  777. Because here's where it gets real. If

  778. you call the grove your home, how are

  779. you participating in the grove?

  780. We sing together. We grow in the word

  781. together.

  782. But we have several ministries that

  783. exist beyond the hour and 15, the hour

  784. and a half that we meet in this place.

  785. How are you participating in the kingdom

  786. by avenue of the local church? We have

  787. vacation Bible school coming up and I

  788. know Miss Jen would love to have you on

  789. the VBS team.

  790. If to serve no other purpose to say, you

  791. know what, I'll be here, but I'll just

  792. help with crowd control or I'll be a

  793. floater. put me where you need me or

  794. I'll be here and I'll just in a spirit

  795. of underbreath prayer just be praying

  796. that hearts and minds would be open and

  797. kids would come to know Jesus. There are

  798. so many avenues

  799. by which you can serve.

  800. How are you building the kingdom?

  801. Parents, how are you disciplining your

  802. children? Grandparents, how are you

  803. investing in the next generation? You

  804. may be retired. You may be a little bit

  805. more tired than you were in years

  806. previous. But you're not done yet.

  807. Because as long as you have breath in

  808. your lungs, God is not done with you.

  809. How are you investing in the next

  810. generation

  811. and church? Are you serving? Are you

  812. sharing the gospel? Are you making

  813. disciples? Are you mentoring young

  814. believers?

  815. And let me just let me put some handles

  816. on it for us. I want to challenge you

  817. this week.

  818. Say you're in a sales call. Let's say

  819. you're in a meeting with someone. Let's

  820. say you're in the break room. Let let me

  821. just challenge you with something that

  822. can be so simple.

  823. Say something to the effect of, "Hey,

  824. before we begin, if you're open to it,

  825. and no pressure, if you say no, we'll go

  826. on and it'll be okay. But before we

  827. begin, can I just can I just say a quick

  828. prayer? And is there anything that I can

  829. pray for you about? Is there anything

  830. that that I could maybe take before the

  831. Lord with you? No, I'm not really into

  832. that. Oh, okay. No, no worries. And then

  833. you just just continue with the meeting.

  834. Or if they say, "Man, I'd love that."

  835. Or, "Yeah, sure. Go ahead." Hey, well,

  836. what do you need prayer for? Well, I

  837. have an appointment or, you know, I have

  838. an aunt or grandmother who who is sick

  839. and what's her name? Her name is so and

  840. so. His name is so and so. Okay. Lord, I

  841. pray for so- and so. Would you grant

  842. them peace and comfort during this time

  843. in Christ's name? Amen. And if they

  844. didn't say, "I don't have anything." But

  845. yeah, you can pray. Just say, "Lord, I I

  846. I thank you for this interaction.

  847. I pray for our week. I pray for our

  848. family. I pray that your hand of

  849. protection will be over us in Jesus

  850. name." Amen.

  851. Let's participate in the kingdom. Let's

  852. build it together. Would you pray with

  853. me? Lord, we thank you so much for the

  854. opportunity to be gathered here today.

  855. And Lord, I pray that your hand of

  856. blessing would be upon us. I pray that

  857. as you move,

  858. as you work and spirit, as you continue

  859. to awaken hearts and minds,

  860. I pray Lord that

  861. you would resurrect us out of death and

  862. sin to life eternal.

  863. And Lord, I pray if there is anyone

  864. present this morning who maybe for a

  865. long time would behold lesser kings,

  866. maybe the king of wealth or the king of

  867. talents and gifts or the king of gossip

  868. or the king of ly or the king of lust or

  869. whatever it may be that today would be

  870. the day of repentance. And they would

  871. know that they would know that it is

  872. only through faith in the work and

  873. person of Jesus Christ

  874. that eternal life is possible.

  875. And if that's you today, this is your

  876. day of salvation. All this we ask in

  877. Christ's name. All God's people said,

  878. >> amen.

  879. >> Amen. Hey, would you stand to your feet

  880. with me?

  881. We're going to sing together. Amen.

  882. We're going to lift up the name of

  883. Jesus.

  884. Our altar is going to be open. This is a

  885. time of response for you as you have sat

  886. in the service, as we have sung

  887. together, as we've grown in the words

  888. [music] together.

  889. Maybe you have felt the spirit working

  890. in you. Well, our altar is open. Maybe

  891. you want to come and have a prayer

  892. moment with the Lord, some one-on-one

  893. [music] time, maybe to thank the Lord

  894. for some blessings or to pray for a need

  895. that you have or to intercede on behalf

  896. of someone. Or if you would like Pastor

  897. Eric or myself to come [music] alongside

  898. you and pray, we would love to do that.

  899. If you have questions about membership,

  900. about baptism, about salvation, we would

  901. love to have that conversation [music]

  902. with you this morning. This is an

  903. opportunity for you to do that. I love

  904. you, church.
