  1. All right, if you have a Bible or an

  2. app, let's open it up. We're going to be

  3. in Psalm 48 this morning. Psalm 48.

  4. As you know, over the last couple of

  5. summers we've been diving into the book

  6. of Psalms and it is a collection

  7. of Holy Spirit inspired words written

  8. through various [clears throat] authors

  9. over the course of several centuries

  10. that give us a glimpse into what the

  11. prayer life was like for ancient Israel.

  12. What did worship songs look like for

  13. ancient Israel?

  14. What did prayers of lament look like for

  15. them? I think one of my

  16. favorite parts about the book of Psalms

  17. and maybe you can relate with this is

  18. the fact that they are not fearful to

  19. lament before the Lord.

  20. To be open and honest and real.

  21. Whatever it is that they're dealing

  22. with, whatever circumstances they're

  23. facing, whatever raw emotions, maybe

  24. bitterness or anger, the psalmist, the

  25. authors, the writers, they're

  26. they're not afraid to keep that hidden

  27. from the Lord. And if there's one thing

  28. that I've learned

  29. over the last couple of summers as we

  30. have journeyed through this book

  31. together,

  32. I have learned that that we serve a

  33. father in heaven who like any loving

  34. parent

  35. desires to connect with his children.

  36. And one of the greatest ways, and

  37. parents have experienced this, that that

  38. we can connect with our children

  39. is by sitting with them,

  40. being present together,

  41. and having honest and open conversation.

  42. And we've talked about this before. God

  43. already knows what's going on here and

  44. what's going on in here. There's nothing

  45. unknown about you to God. There's

  46. nothing unknown about your emotions and

  47. your feelings to God. God knows it all.

  48. However, there is something special and

  49. powerful and unique that happens when we

  50. lay it all on the table and bear it

  51. before the Lord because we experience a

  52. transformation

  53. within ourselves because of the

  54. confession that we're bringing before

  55. the Lord. And I might add this that that

  56. maybe for some of us we we're we're in

  57. here and what we need for some healing

  58. in our life,

  59. what we need for some genuine hope in

  60. our life, for some peace and some

  61. comfort and some joy is to just lay it

  62. down before the Lord. He knows it

  63. anyway.

  64. And when we lay it down before the Lord,

  65. we don't lay it down for his sake. He

  66. already knows it. We lay it down for our

  67. sake.

  68. And we choose [clears throat] to step

  69. into faith, we choose to step into

  70. trust, and we choose to step into

  71. obedience.

  72. And what I love about our passage here,

  73. we'll read it in just a moment,

  74. in Psalm 48,

  75. is it shows us the power of God's

  76. presence in our life.

  77. Psalm 48 is known as a Zion Psalm if

  78. you're familiar with it and a lot of the

  79. words that are used what the psalmist,

  80. the sons of Korah, and what do we know

  81. about the sons of Korah? They've written

  82. several Psalms in the book of Psalms.

  83. They were a people who were at one point

  84. known for rebellion against God's

  85. leadership.

  86. But now, at this point in the history of

  87. ancient Israel, have now become a people

  88. of worship, which I've constantly

  89. reminded us throughout our series this

  90. summer, is that speaks into our own

  91. story.

  92. We were at one point a people of

  93. rebellion.

  94. Sons of perdition is what some

  95. translations

  96. say. Strangers and enemies to God." But

  97. we praise God because the Holy Spirit

  98. awakens faith in us. Jesus, through his

  99. life, death, resurrection, ascension,

  100. and our hope in his return

  101. is who we place our faith in.

  102. He draws us to himself.

  103. And he opens up the door, the avenue by

  104. which we can be reconciled

  105. to the Father by way of the Son, indwelt

  106. by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  107. This is who we are now. No longer

  108. children of disobedience, but children

  109. of God.

  110. And in recognizing that,

  111. we begin to experience a greater portion

  112. of God's presence. And And here's Here's

  113. what I want to challenge us with before

  114. we read.

  115. God is omnipresent. If you've been in

  116. the church world long enough, you've

  117. probably have heard that phrase, "God is

  118. omnipresent."

  119. Well, what does that mean? It means that

  120. God is present everywhere all the time.

  121. But But here's the challenge as we read

  122. this Psalm.

  123. Though God indeed, yes and amen, is

  124. present all the time,

  125. there's never a moment when we step into

  126. God's presence because God's presence

  127. has always and is already there,

  128. but there are moments where we step into

  129. a greater awareness of God's presence.

  130. And this is what Psalm 48 calls us to.

  131. Because it's very easy in a

  132. distraction-filled

  133. world, in our routines, in our habits,

  134. in our schedules, and everything else we

  135. have going on in life,

  136. it's very easy for us to miss out on the

  137. God who fills it all.

  138. On the God who dwells

  139. there.

  140. Case in point, God dwells here.

  141. God's presence is here.

  142. God's presence is in your living room.

  143. God dwells there. God's presence is at

  144. your dinner table. God dwells there.

  145. God's presence is at Lowe's down the

  146. street. God dwells there, but are you

  147. aware of God's presence?

  148. Are you in tune with who God is and what

  149. he's doing and what he desires to

  150. accomplish? Not just us as a collective

  151. body of people, but you as an

  152. individual. You as a mom, you as a dad,

  153. you as a daughter, you as a son, you as

  154. a business owner, you as an engineer,

  155. you as a salesman, you as an

  156. an educator, you as someone who works in

  157. an industry. Do you know, are you aware

  158. of what God wants to do in you and

  159. through you?

  160. And I would go so far as to say this,

  161. many people

  162. are not aware.

  163. Not because there is

  164. a desi- Not because people wake up in

  165. the morning and tell themselves, "I

  166. don't want to praise God."

  167. I believe many of us, and maybe I'm

  168. being more gracious than than I should,

  169. but I believe many of us in here, if not

  170. all of us, we mean well.

  171. We want to praise God. You're here this

  172. morning.

  173. We want our lives to embody obedience

  174. before the Lord and faith in the Lord.

  175. That I am certain by virtue of us being

  176. here this morning, we want our marriage

  177. to model the gospel. WE WANT OUR

  178. CHILDREN TO know and and understand what

  179. it means to be obedient to the Lord. So,

  180. I I don't believe that we wake up in the

  181. morning and we tell ourselves, "I want

  182. to disobey God." But I think because of

  183. all the distractions in our life,

  184. we miss out on the power of God's

  185. presence. So, Psalm 48,

  186. let's dive in

  187. beginning in verse one.

  188. The Lord

  189. is great

  190. and highly

  191. praised.

  192. Isn't it amazing that this is how the

  193. psalmist starts?

  194. The Lord is great and highly

  195. praised.

  196. The more you understand the greatness of

  197. God,

  198. the more your heart's going to be drawn

  199. to praising God.

  200. And we'll talk about this here in in

  201. just a moment. God's greatness

  202. is not determined by whether life is

  203. going great.

  204. God's greatness is not determined by

  205. whether things are going well for you

  206. or your plan is working out the way that

  207. you hoped

  208. or the bank account is full or your

  209. health is well.

  210. God is great because God is great.

  211. And because of that, he's highly

  212. praised. Well, where is he praised?

  213. Well, let's unpack this.

  214. In the city of our God.

  215. His holy mountain rising splendidly

  216. is the joy of the whole

  217. earth. Isn't that beautiful?

  218. This invitation

  219. is given to the whole earth. We talked

  220. about this last week. This is why

  221. in Revelation chapter 7, when John is

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  222. given this vision of what is taking

  223. place in heaven,

  224. he hears the exuberant praise and

  225. worship of a people

  226. that are not distinct by tribe, tongue,

  227. and nation, but a people of every tribe,

  228. tongue, and nation.

  229. This is the picture that God gives us

  230. and here,

  231. centuries removed from when Jesus comes

  232. on on scene later in the New Testament,

  233. Millennia removed from when John would

  234. have this vision of worship taking place

  235. in heaven. God's people knew that the

  236. praise of his name is not exclusive to a

  237. particular people group, but is

  238. available to the earth.

  239. To anyone who would recognize God as

  240. great.

  241. And if you remember a couple of years

  242. ago, we

  243. we went through a sermon series

  244. throughout the first parts of the book

  245. of Genesis.

  246. And one of the taglines in that series

  247. was this.

  248. We understand who we are in the context

  249. of who God is.

  250. Well, Roland, what does that mean? That

  251. that's church talk. Lay it to me very

  252. clear. Here's what it means. The The

  253. more that we recognize, understand, and

  254. see who God is, the more I'm going to

  255. recognize, understand, and see who I am.

  256. And here's what that means.

  257. It means that I am a sinner

  258. who cannot stand in the presence of the

  259. holy God of creation.

  260. So then what hope is there for me if I

  261. cannot, because of my sin, stand in the

  262. presence of the holy God of creation?

  263. This is where Jesus comes in.

  264. And through his life, through his death,

  265. through his resurrection, his ascension,

  266. his eventual return, he provides the

  267. way, which is why in John's gospel,

  268. Jesus will say, "I am the way, the

  269. truth, and the life. No one, no

  270. exceptions, no one comes to the Father

  271. except through me."

  272. And then they crucified him for it.

  273. Cuz Jesus, God in the flesh,

  274. proclaimed that he came for

  275. the earth. Let's continue. Mount Zion,

  276. the summit of Zaphon,

  277. is the city of the great king.

  278. God is known as a stronghold in its

  279. citadels.

  280. Look,

  281. the kings assembled.

  282. They advanced together. They looked and

  283. froze with fear. They fled in terror.

  284. Trembling seized them there. Agony like

  285. that of a woman in labor.

  286. As you wrecked the ships of Tarshish

  287. with the east wind.

  288. Just as we heard,

  289. so we have seen in the city of the Lord

  290. of armies, in the city of our God, God

  291. will be established forever. Selah.

  292. God within your temple,

  293. we contemplate your faithful love.

  294. Like your name, God, so your praise

  295. reaches to the ends of the earth.

  296. Your right hand is filled with justice.

  297. Mount Zion is glad. Judah's villages

  298. rejoice because of your

  299. judgments.

  300. Go around Zion.

  301. Encircle it.

  302. Count its towers.

  303. Note its ramparts. Tour its citadels so

  304. that you

  305. can tell a future generation. This God,

  306. our God forever and ever, he will always

  307. lead us. And all God's people said,

  308. "Amen." Lord, would you bless your word?

  309. Holy Spirit, would you stir our hearts

  310. this morning?

  311. An incredible passage.

  312. A lot of symbolism

  313. here. And this is what theologically we

  314. would call

  315. a double-sided theological coin.

  316. In other words, what the sons of Korah

  317. are writing about was indeed something

  318. that happened in the history of Israel.

  319. We don't know exactly what particular

  320. point in the history of Israel does this

  321. Psalm reference, though there are some

  322. particulars that theologians and

  323. Christian scholars agree on. One of them

  324. is during the reign of Hezekiah.

  325. As the Canaanites attempted to invade

  326. Israel, they were drawn away because

  327. of the walls,

  328. the towers,

  329. the army,

  330. and they fled in fear, and they fled in

  331. terror, and therefore the sons of Korah

  332. write Psalm 48 as a means to exalt the

  333. Lord and praise him. Now, let's make one

  334. thing

  335. understandable for us. When we read the

  336. word Zion in the scripture, not just in

  337. the old but New Testament as well, it's

  338. almost always referencing

  339. Jerusalem,

  340. the city of David,

  341. God's dwelling place, but but also and

  342. more than that, it's referencing God's

  343. kingdom.

  344. And God's kingdom is not unique to

  345. geographical boundaries.

  346. It's not unique to land masses. God's

  347. kingdom is the entire world, his

  348. creation, the universe, which is why

  349. time and time again we'll read things

  350. like this, the heavens declare the glory

  351. of God.

  352. The expanse, the the mountains,

  353. creation, the the birds of the air, the

  354. the animals of land, the the fish of the

  355. sea, all of it points to the beauty of

  356. God. And this is Paul's argument in

  357. Romans chapter 2 when he's calling the

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  358. believers in Rome to understand that God

  359. desires to be known, his presence

  360. desires to be amongst his people so that

  361. there is a greater awareness within us

  362. of how God is moving and how God is

  363. working. And here's what I want us to

  364. understand. I want us to understand cuz

  365. this is the heartbeat of of the passage.

  366. That God's people

  367. are secure not because of what surrounds

  368. them,

  369. but because of the God who dwells among

  370. them.

  371. And what I want to do for just a moment

  372. is I want to talk to you about walls.

  373. In ancient Israel, there were cities

  374. that were known for their incredible

  375. walls.

  376. Walls were erected around these nations

  377. for protection. Massive stone walls

  378. several feet thick were constructed

  379. around these nations for one sole

  380. purpose, security.

  381. We're no strangers to stories about

  382. these walls. The city of Jericho was

  383. known for its thick walls and in an

  384. instant God tore them down.

  385. If you remember the story of Jonah,

  386. Nineveh was known for its thick walls.

  387. Or the story of the prophet Nehemiah,

  388. when he hears of Jerusalem laying

  389. being laid in waste, he travels back

  390. home and his first task, his first order

  391. of business is to reconstruct the walls.

  392. Walls are a big deal. They were a sign

  393. of security. They were a sign of

  394. prosperity and it's not very different

  395. for us today.

  396. Though we may not erect physical walls,

  397. we have walls in our life nonetheless

  398. that provide for us assurances, that

  399. provide for us security. You think of

  400. things like your job

  401. or your health

  402. Or your finances.

  403. Things that make us feel comfortable. A

  404. strong marriage.

  405. Your savings accounts.

  406. Or a carefully planned out

  407. future. And every single one of us

  408. has walls in our life that we've come to

  409. trust in.

  410. For stability and for security. But but

  411. here's the question. What do we do when

  412. those walls come tumbling down?

  413. How does that stir our faith?

  414. How does that stir our spirit? What do

  415. we do when we discover that those walls

  416. in our life will never provide for us

  417. what only God can.

  418. And this is where Psalm 48 speaks.

  419. Because while Psalm 48 has great

  420. descriptors of the city,

  421. the focus of Psalm 48 is not the city

  422. itself.

  423. But the focus of Psalm 48 is the God who

  424. dwells there. That's why the city's

  425. great.

  426. That's why the city has stability.

  427. That's why the city has security.

  428. Because God's presence is there.

  429. So let's do this.

  430. For the rest of our time, let's go back

  431. to the Psalm. Let's reference some

  432. passages here in Psalm 48 and let's draw

  433. out some truths

  434. that will allow us to see God for who he

  435. is. Because remember, the more we

  436. understand who God is, the greater the

  437. awareness we have of his presence. And

  438. so if you're taking notes, here's the

  439. first thing. It's right there in verse

  440. one. It's very simple. God is great.

  441. Now let's just be honest. Often times it

  442. doesn't feel like God is great.

  443. And the reason it doesn't feel like God

  444. is great is because we've allowed

  445. circumstances in our life to dictate

  446. whether God is great.

  447. And so you know this feeling, I know

  448. this feeling, we've all been there,

  449. we've all experienced this feeling. When

  450. life is not going well, it is the

  451. tendency within human nature to point

  452. the blame somewhere.

  453. And the last place we want to point the

  454. blame to is ourselves. We see this

  455. pattern all the way back in Genesis 3.

  456. When Eve took of the fruit,

  457. she gave it to Adam, Adam ate, sin

  458. entered the world, God came looking for

  459. them, he asked Adam, "Did you eat from

  460. the tree?" What did Adam say?

  461. The woman gave it to me.

  462. We always want to point blame somewhere

  463. else. And often times when it comes to

  464. the greatness of God, we allow

  465. circumstances and the things of this

  466. world to interfere

  467. with our perspective, our focus, and our

  468. view of who God is. And so for many of

  469. us, God's not great because life is not

  470. going great. But if all we ever do is

  471. rely on the things of this world and

  472. what is taking place in our life to

  473. determine whether God is great, then

  474. we'll never have an accurate

  475. understanding of who God is.

  476. And if we never have an accurate

  477. understanding of who God is, then what

  478. that does is lessen the ability for us

  479. to really understand and experience

  480. God's greater presence in our life.

  481. Which is what Psalm 48 is drawing us to.

  482. As they're rejoicing and praising God

  483. for his presence in their life. It's not

  484. about the walls, it's not about the

  485. towers, it's not about the beautiful

  486. city, it's not about your bank account,

  487. it's not about your health, IT'S NOT

  488. ABOUT ALL THE GOOD things in YOUR LIFE.

  489. PRAISE GOD for those things. We don't

  490. minimize those things, but those good

  491. things are never the ultimate things

  492. because there's only one ultimate thing,

  493. and that's Jesus Christ.

  494. And so, what does the psalmist do? Right

  495. here at the get-go, verse one.

  496. The Lord is great and highly praised in

  497. the city of our God. Before the

  498. descriptors

  499. of the citadels and the stronghold of

  500. Mount Zion, where is our focus drawn to?

  501. The greatness of God. So, notice what

  502. Psalm 48 is doing. Psalm 48 is giving us

  503. a pattern by which we are to view life.

  504. We look at everything else in life

  505. through the lens of the greatness of

  506. God.

  507. And if we approach everything else in

  508. life through the lens of the greatness

  509. of God, even though everything else in

  510. life may not be great, we can still

  511. experience a peace, a joy, and an

  512. understanding that Paul talks about in

  513. the book of Philippians that doesn't

  514. come from the world, but is hand

  515. delivered to us by the indwelling power

  516. of the Holy Spirit because the lens by

  517. which we look at everything else is the

  518. greatness of God. But, here's the trap

  519. that we fall into.

  520. We look at the greatness of God through

  521. the lens of everything else.

  522. And Psalm 48 says, "No."

  523. The Lord is great and highly praised.

  524. We praise God for who he is, not what he

  525. does. Yes, praise God for what he does.

  526. But, if we're not careful, we can seek

  527. all the gifts

  528. and neglect seeking the gift giver.

  529. Here's some homework for you. Go and

  530. read John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  531. This is what Jesus runs into.

  532. After he multiplies the bread and the

  533. fish,

  534. he goes to have some alone time with the

  535. Father the next morning. the people that

  536. he fed come looking for him.

  537. When they find him, they say, "Where

  538. you've been? We've been looking for you

  539. all day." And Jesus is keen. He's aware

  540. on what's taking place. And do you

  541. remember what he says in John 6?

  542. He says,

  543. "You came looking for me not because you

  544. desire me,

  545. but because I gave you something to

  546. eat."

  547. Now, it's not wrong to enjoy, {quote}

  548. {unquote}, the things Jesus gives us to

  549. eat and feast on. It's not wrong.

  550. Becomes wrong when that overshadows the

  551. one who gave it to us.

  552. So, remember that God is great.

  553. Everything that follows is rooted in who

  554. he is. Now, look at verse two with me.

  555. This is incredible.

  556. Because the psalmist references the

  557. summit of Zaphon.

  558. Well, what in the world is that? Some of

  559. your translations um might read the

  560. northern hills or the northern tribes.

  561. This was a reference to the Canaanites.

  562. And if we take the consensus among

  563. Christian scholars that this was written

  564. as a praise song

  565. because of the Canaanites when they came

  566. against King Hezekiah and then fled in

  567. fear when they recognized the power of

  568. the city. And it wasn't the power of the

  569. city, it was the presence of the one who

  570. dwelt in the city.

  571. Then we understand this, that the

  572. psalmist

  573. is saying because the summit of Zaphon,

  574. where the northern hills of the

  575. Canaanites,

  576. where they worshipped idols,

  577. where they sacrificed

  578. to idols.

  579. And the author is saying, "God's

  580. greatness is greater than that."

  581. Every mountain, every hill, every rival,

  582. God is greater than that. He is the

  583. great king over all the earth. How do we

  584. know this? Look at verse three.

  585. God is known as a stronghold

  586. in its citadels. The citadels are not

  587. the stronghold. Who's the stronghold?

  588. God.

  589. The God who dwells there.

  590. The towers, which is what the citadels

  591. were, the towers aren't the refuge.

  592. God is the refuge.

  593. How does that translate for us? Your

  594. bank account's not the refuge.

  595. Your gifts is not the refuge.

  596. The things that you hold on to deeply

  597. and tightly in life for stability and

  598. security, that's not the refuge. God is

  599. the refuge. Because in a moment

  600. for some of you, this is your story. In

  601. a moment, it's all can all come tumbling

  602. down.

  603. And if it does, what do you What do you

  604. have left to stand on? It's sinking

  605. sand.

  606. But if our life is built on the

  607. greatness, rock-solid foundation of God,

  608. then we know that while every earthly

  609. kingdom will crumble, while every

  610. earthly pursuit will crumble, only God

  611. remains unshaken.

  612. And here's what I love, cuz here's the

  613. next thing that we see. When you know

  614. that God is great

  615. for who he is,

  616. not what he does, then you begin to

  617. trust him more.

  618. You begin to pursue him more, and you

  619. recognize his faithfulness. This is

  620. >> [laughter]

  621. >> This is the pattern the psalm takes us

  622. on.

  623. So, not only is God great, what do we

  624. see in the text? That God is faithful.

  625. Look at verses four and five.

  626. Verse four.

  627. Look.

  628. I love that. We've referenced this

  629. before in these types of Psalms that

  630. just have those one-word attention

  631. grabbers for us.

  632. Look.

  633. Some of us need to hit the pause button

  634. in our life and just look.

  635. We want God's presence, but are you

  636. seeking a greater awareness of God's

  637. presence?

  638. You know, I'm

  639. I'm saying this because I've experienced

  640. this in my own life.

  641. There are moments because I know the

  642. truth. I know the Sunday school answer.

  643. I should seek God's presence.

  644. I'm a pastor. I'm called to shepherd

  645. people. I'm supposed to seek God's

  646. presence.

  647. And sometimes that stirring is not

  648. there. That desire is not there. And the

  649. trap that we can fall into cuz I fall

  650. into it several times

  651. is I tell myself, "Well, I'll just wait

  652. till I experience the desire and then

  653. I'll start to seek God." But, there's a

  654. problem with that. Do you know what that

  655. problem is? No one desires the Lord.

  656. No one wants to seek after him. There's

  657. a sin nature that exists in every single

  658. one of us that is constantly at battle

  659. with the spirit.

  660. It is not natural for us to seek the

  661. things of God. It is natural for us to

  662. seek sin and the things of this world.

  663. So, left to ourselves, we'll never get

  664. the desire, which is why we need

  665. intentionality and discipline. And maybe

  666. some of you are there today. You keep

  667. telling yourself, "One day I'll get the

  668. desire to pray more. One day I'll get

  669. the desire to serve in ministry. One day

  670. I'll get the desire to read my Bible

  671. more. One day I'll get the desire to

  672. step out in faith to what God is

  673. stirring in me." Maybe for some of you

  674. men, God is stirring in you a call to

  675. the pastorate.

  676. Maybe to the mission field.

  677. Maybe to be part of the worship team.

  678. Maybe to lead a Bible study.

  679. God is stirring in you something and if

  680. all we ever do is wait for the desire

  681. for it to happen, rarely will it ever

  682. happen, which is why we need to crucify

  683. the flesh and intentionally step into

  684. the disciplines and the lifestyle of

  685. obedience God calls us to, not for the

  686. sake of earning salvation,

  687. but for the sake of experiencing a

  688. greater awareness of God's presence and

  689. work in our life.

  690. So, the psalmist says, "Look, church,

  691. are you looking?"

  692. Let's continue.

  693. The kings assembled, they advanced

  694. together, they looked and froze with

  695. fear, they fled in

  696. terror.

  697. I love how this scene shifts cuz cuz

  698. we're given this picture into the

  699. greatness of God.

  700. And then the sons of Korah begin to

  701. expose to us what it means that God is

  702. faithful. So, what scene is being

  703. painted here? Kings are assembling

  704. together, armies are gathering

  705. at the foothills of Jerusalem, Zion, and

  706. what happens? They flee in terror.

  707. Why?

  708. Because God's presence is there.

  709. Because God is its stronghold.

  710. No kingdom, no economy, no army, no

  711. human power can stand against the Lord.

  712. This is why we have the greatest hope

  713. that there is.

  714. Because while the world has gone to pot,

  715. we know

  716. that at the end God will bring

  717. restoration to all that's broken.

  718. The enemy is trying to ruin and destroy,

  719. steal, kill, and destroy, that's his

  720. motive,

  721. all that God has planned for your life.

  722. But in the end, who wins?

  723. We know the end of the story.

  724. Flip all the way to the end.

  725. And what does the end say?

  726. That you and I will be with God forever.

  727. If you have placed your hope, faith, and

  728. trust in Jesus Christ

  729. as savior

  730. and your lord.

  731. The scripture says,

  732. this is as worse as it gets for us. This

  733. is the worst it'll ever be for the child

  734. of God.

  735. But if you don't know Jesus Christ,

  736. if you've never placed your hope, faith,

  737. and trust in Christ as lord and savior,

  738. this is as good as it gets for you.

  739. That's a sobering thought.

  740. Which begs the question, do you know

  741. Christ as your lord and savior? Do you

  742. see him as great? And do you see him as

  743. faithful? Look at verse 8 with me real

  744. quick.

  745. Cuz notice the shift here.

  746. Just as we heard, so we have seen in the

  747. city of the Lord of armies, in the city

  748. of our God, God will establish it

  749. forever.

  750. Selah.

  751. What does that mean? It means that

  752. previous generations who had experienced

  753. the faithfulness of God were sharing

  754. God's faithfulness.

  755. And now the psalmist is say is saying,

  756. we have heard these stories. Now we've

  757. not just heard them, we've seen them,

  758. we've experienced them. Mom and dad,

  759. what stories of God's faithfulness and

  760. God's greatness are you sharing with

  761. your kids?

  762. Knowing that one day your kids will grow

  763. to not just have heard those stories, to

  764. have seen and experienced those stories.

  765. And then the pattern continues. They'll

  766. tell their children. Their children will

  767. experience it to the then tell their

  768. children, and it would just continue

  769. until the Lord returns.

  770. Every generation

  771. must move

  772. from hearing about God's faithfulness to

  773. experiencing it personally. And here's

  774. here's a challenge for some of us. Some

  775. of you, your faith is built just on what

  776. you've heard.

  777. Amazing stories maybe from your parents,

  778. your grandparents, a trusted pastor, a

  779. Bible study teacher, and your faith is

  780. lived out in proxy based on what other

  781. people have experienced. But have you

  782. walked in a personal relationship with

  783. Jesus?

  784. I remember, you know my story. I gave my

  785. life to Jesus when I was 17. I didn't

  786. really give my life. He He took it. He

  787. resurrected me out of death and sin to

  788. life eternal.

  789. When I was 17, 2 weeks after September

  790. 11th, September 11th was the catalyst

  791. that got me thinking about good versus

  792. evil, and if evil takes place in the

  793. world, what role does God play? That

  794. search led me to faith in Jesus Christ.

  795. And I remember leading up to that, we

  796. had a little youth revival at our

  797. church.

  798. And there was a peer of mine, someone in

  799. the same grade who who was a a a

  800. hardcore believer. He came and he

  801. preached.

  802. And then when we were having a meal

  803. afterwards, he says, "Have you given

  804. your life to Jesus yet?" I had not given

  805. my life to Jesus yet.

  806. But I tried to fake my way.

  807. Cuz I had heard other people talk about

  808. faith in

  809. Jesus, and I had all the right things to

  810. say.

  811. But I never experienced it personally. I

  812. think that might be some of us here this

  813. morning.

  814. From young to old, we we've been

  815. building a life of faith based on the

  816. stories we've heard from other people.

  817. But have you seen and experienced it

  818. yourself?

  819. Because someone else's faith doesn't get

  820. you to heaven.

  821. It's your faith All right.

  822. in Christ as your Lord and your savior.

  823. Let me continue. We're running out of

  824. time.

  825. Our story must focus on the Lord.

  826. God's greatness leads us to trust him.

  827. God's faithfulness gives us confidence

  828. in him.

  829. And finally, what do we see here in the

  830. Psalm? That God is glorified it

  831. glorified through it. Also, God is

  832. great, God is faithful, and God is

  833. glorious. This is my favorite part of

  834. the Psalm beginning in verse 12.

  835. Go around Zion.

  836. Encircle it. Count its towers. Note its

  837. ramparts. Tour its citadels. So that you

  838. can tell a future generation. Now Now

  839. notice your what's What's the goal of

  840. the Psalm?

  841. The Psalm is referencing the city. The

  842. Psalm is referencing the structures.

  843. But ultimately, what is the Psalm

  844. getting at? It's not about those things.

  845. It's about the God who dwells there.

  846. Because that wall is powerless if God's

  847. not there. That tower is powerless if

  848. God's not there. You remember how this

  849. played out when God

  850. told Moses, "Hey, it's time to break

  851. camp. You need to go forward, continue

  852. to journey towards the promised land."

  853. And you remember Moses' response? "Hey

  854. God, I'll obey you, but only if you're

  855. going to go with us. If you're not going

  856. with us, I don't want to be somewhere

  857. where you're not."

  858. God's presence is the focus. And what

  859. are we called to tell a future

  860. generation?

  861. This will be us as long as I'm pastor

  862. here at The Grove. We will tell the

  863. future generation, which is why we put a

  864. high emphasis on our kid and student

  865. ministries.

  866. This God, our God, forever and ever he

  867. will always lead us. What leads you?

  868. What influences you? What directs

  869. you?

  870. Because these towers and these walls,

  871. though they were not the focus, they

  872. became the testimony

  873. of the one who is the focus. So, it's

  874. not my wealth is where my security is,

  875. it's my wealth leads me to glorify God

  876. in a greater in a greater way.

  877. These blessings are not where my

  878. security is, but these blessings lead me

  879. to glorify God in a greater way. And I

  880. know the rebuttal because I I have the

  881. rebuttal as well. Well, Rowan, it's not

  882. just the good things. I agree.

  883. Last summer we spent an entire summer

  884. looking at these Psalms of lament that

  885. said this, God is still praised even

  886. though all the bad things happen in my

  887. life.

  888. Even though the valley is despicable,

  889. horrible, dark, and painful, and

  890. insufferable, God is still praised. Both

  891. good, both bad. God is glorious.

  892. And if we haven't picked it up already,

  893. this Psalm ultimately points to Christ.

  894. His eternal kingdom where God will dwell

  895. with his people forever and ever.

  896. So, don't leave here admiiring the walls

  897. in your life. Leave here worshipping the

  898. God

  899. who has allowed you

  900. to build the life that you have.

  901. Leave here lifting up the name of Jesus

  902. who is greater than anything that you'll

  903. face

  904. because his presence is enough. Let's

  905. pray.

  906. Lord, thank you for this morning. We

  907. thank you for today.

  908. We thank you for how you move and how

  909. you work.

  910. And how in everything and through

  911. everything

  912. you call us to be your children.

  913. And so today, Lord, we receive that

  914. call.

  915. Stir us to deeper affections and greater

  916. faith.

  917. And no matter what we might be facing or

  918. enduring

  919. may we know, Holy Spirit, would you

  920. would you confirm in us

  921. the beauty of your grace and mercy to

  922. know that that no sin is too far gone.

  923. No pit so deep that your love is not

  924. deeper still. And so so Holy Spirit,

  925. would you awaken us [music] to faith in

  926. you?

  927. To grab hold of relationship with you

  928. and to leave here forever changed. In

  929. Christ's name we pray. All God's people

  930. Amen. Hey, let's stand together.

  931. We're going to sing together.

  932. Let the words on the screen be a prayer

  933. of your heart. Let's not sing for the

  934. sake of singing, but let's sing because

  935. this is our prayer to God.

  936. And we're going to have a time of

  937. response. Our altar's going to be open.

  938. If you want to have some one-on-one time

  939. with the Lord, this is for you to come

  940. before the Lord

  941. to confess some sin

  942. to receive prayer. Pastor [music] Eric

  943. and myself will be available. We'd love

  944. to pray with you.

  945. If you have questions about salvation,

  946. baptism, [music] church membership

  947. maybe the Holy Spirit is just doing a

  948. work in you right now and and you have

  949. some questions

  950. we want to come alongside you guys. If

  951. you want to bring your family and just

  952. pray with them [music] at the altar,

  953. this time is for you. I love you,

  954. church.
