  1. Amen.

  2. >> All right. Well, if you have your

  3. Bibles, let's open it up. We're going to

  4. be in Psalm 47 this morning. Psalm 47.

  5. As you know, every summer, we take the

  6. opportunity to dive into the book of

  7. Psalms so that we can lo and we can grow

  8. together from these writings that

  9. include everything from worship, worship

  10. songs to history to poems. And it's all

  11. pointing towards the Lord. And this

  12. morning we find ourselves in Psalm 47.

  13. And I want to begin our time by asking

  14. this question.

  15. Who is your king?

  16. Now, we know what the Sunday school

  17. answer is, and I pray that the Sunday

  18. school answer is true for you. The

  19. answer is Jesus. But here's the reality

  20. of the life that we live. You have a

  21. crown. Everyone has a crown. And what we

  22. do is we take that crown and we place it

  23. upon someone or something to reign and

  24. rule over our lives.

  25. For many people, it's their career or

  26. it's wealth or popularity or their

  27. family or politics

  28. or anything else that would drive them

  29. and create an angst in them. And the

  30. question is not whether you have a king.

  31. The question is who is your king? And my

  32. hope this morning as we dive into Psalm

  33. 47 is that we would be confronted with

  34. the reality of where our life is.

  35. What authority do we bow down to? Who

  36. has the greatest control and the

  37. greatest influence over our lives? Men,

  38. when it comes to your family and your

  39. marriage, what influences and leads you?

  40. What directs your heart? What stirs your

  41. passion? There should only and forever

  42. be one answer that is top on that list

  43. and his name is Jesus.

  44. >> In the book of Isaiah, we're given a

  45. glimpse

  46. into the love God has for his people.

  47. And God's love for his people is is so

  48. rooted in his glory and his mercy and

  49. his holiness that the prophet Isaiah

  50. would say this that our God is a jealous

  51. God. Now in 21st century America when we

  52. hear the word jealousy we often always

  53. equate it to the emotion of envy

  54. or coveting. But that's not what Isaiah

  55. means.

  56. Isaiah is not saying that our God is an

  57. envious God or our God is a coveting

  58. God. But our God is king of kings and

  59. lord of lords. He reigns and he rules

  60. over the universe. He reigns and he

  61. rules over creation. So the worship of

  62. anything other than him stirs

  63. a jealousy in him

  64. because you're his

  65. and one of his greatest desires is that

  66. you would dwell in his presence. Did you

  67. know you find we find the greatest

  68. satisfaction, the greatest contentment?

  69. Not in the kings of this world, not in

  70. the glory of this world, not in the

  71. pursuits of this world, though many of

  72. those things can be and our blessings in

  73. our life, but where we find the greatest

  74. satisfaction, the greatest contentment

  75. is when we are present with the Lord.

  76. And when I mean present with the Lord, I

  77. don't mean simply in close proximity.

  78. Many of us would say that our gathering

  79. here this morning incorporates a sense

  80. of being in the presence of God. And I

  81. would agree with us. I would say yes and

  82. amen to that. But when we say being in

  83. the presence of God, what we mean is not

  84. just a gathering place like this, but I

  85. mean finding the secret place in your

  86. life

  87. where quote unquote you let God in.

  88. Those points of pain, those points of

  89. frustration, those points of doubt. Some

  90. of you are in here this morning and you

  91. have pain in your life.

  92. There are questions that are lingering.

  93. There are doubts that are creeping in.

  94. There are emotions that are erupting,

  95. flaring up within your heart, in your

  96. mind. Maybe it's leading you to some

  97. anger before the Lord.

  98. Maybe some bitterness before the Lord.

  99. And Psalm 47 speaks into that

  100. because Psalm 47 reminds us that it's

  101. not emotion.

  102. It's not the circumstances that are

  103. happening around us. It's not even the

  104. pursuit of our life that dictates who's

  105. on the throne

  106. because who's on the throne will never

  107. change. Who's on the throne is Jesus

  108. Christ, the lamb of God who takes away

  109. the sins of the world. However, we can

  110. become so blinded

  111. by earthly pursuits and earthly kings in

  112. our life that we miss out on the

  113. greatest king.

  114. the one who truly desires to lead, to

  115. guide, and to direct us in our life. So,

  116. church, who is your king

  117. in a world obsessed with influence?

  118. We're no strangers to

  119. the cultural shift that has happened

  120. over the last decade with social media.

  121. And the result is a deep admiration

  122. for powerful people, a deep admiration

  123. for celebrities, and we follow

  124. influential voices. And part of that is

  125. a craving for control.

  126. It's a craving for some authority in our

  127. life. But but here's what I love about

  128. Psalm 47. It interrupts that obsession

  129. to say, "There's one voice that should

  130. lead.

  131. There's one who is in control. There's

  132. one who is in authority. And our

  133. obsession with earthly power, our

  134. obsession with earthly pursuit, our

  135. obsession with earthly power should

  136. forever give way to the one who who is

  137. seated on the throne above every throne.

  138. And the king who is above all kings.

  139. So Psalm 47, it'll be on the screen. If

  140. you have your Bibles, we'll read it.

  141. Verse

  142. one,

  143. for the qu for the choir director, a

  144. psalm of the sons of Kora. And a couple

  145. of weeks ago, what did we learn about

  146. the s uh the sons of Kora

  147. in Numbers chapter 16? There was a

    Numbers 16 chapter mention

  148. rebellion

  149. against the leadership of Moses,

  150. which resulted in a rebellion against

  151. the leadership of God.

  152. That rebellion was instituted by the

  153. sons of Kora.

  154. And if you remember further in number

  155. 16, what happens? God institutes and

  156. reigns down judgment on the sons of

  157. Kora. And we read this that the earth

  158. opened up and swallowed them in. There

  159. was a remnant, however, of the sons of

  160. Kora that survived. And they survived

  161. for this purpose because God knew that a

  162. people who were once in rebellion

  163. against his name, against his influence,

  164. would become a people who worshiped his

  165. name and who praised his name. And

  166. doesn't that preach well? Cuz isn't that

  167. our story? Isn't that your story? For

  168. every believer in Jesus Christ, you were

  169. once a child of rebellion, a child of

  170. disobedience, but because of Jesus

  171. Christ,

  172. because of the king who is above all

  173. kings, the one who and sits on the

  174. throne that is above all thrones,

  175. because he entered your life, forgave

  176. you of your sins, awakened you to faith

  177. in him, and gave you life eternal.

  178. You're no longer a ch a child of

  179. disobedience. You're a child of worship.

  180. And this is what the sons of Kora are

  181. doing.

  182. We believe that this psalm that we're

  183. about to read,

  184. historians believe that in 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 6 chapter mention

  185. chapter 6, when King David was leading

  186. the procession to bring the ark of the

  187. covenant back into Jerusalem, this was

  188. the song that was being sung.

  189. Beginning in verse one, here's how it

  190. reads.

  191. Clap your hands all you peoples.

  192. Shout to God with a jubilant

  193. cry. This is for free this morning. But

  194. but so many of us, we're so fixated on

  195. everything that's wrong. We're so

  196. fixated on the negative things in our

  197. life and in this world that we miss out

  198. on opportunities to praise God. And our

  199. days are not filled with praise. They're

  200. not filled with clapping hands. They're

  201. not filled with jubilant cry. You know

  202. what they're filled with? With

  203. bitterness,

  204. with anger,

  205. with complaints.

  206. And that doesn't mean those things

  207. aren't merited. But but here's the key.

  208. Here's the game changer. Do those things

  209. lead you further from God, or do they

  210. lead you closer to God? I dare say for

  211. so many it leads you further from God

  212. because your attitude then becomes, "Woe

  213. is me."

  214. And you may be in a season, yes, woe is

  215. you. I don't doubt that we enter moments

  216. where, yes, woe is us. But you know what

  217. the Bible teaches us, what God's word

  218. teaches us, that in the woe is me

  219. season, there's always greater is he.

  220. There's always the king of kings and the

  221. lord of lords. Verse two,

  222. for the Lord most high

  223. is all inspiring,

  224. a great king over the whole earth. He

  225. subdues peoples

  226. under us and nations under our feet. He

  227. chooses for us our inheritance, the

  228. pride of Jacob whom he loves. SA.

  229. We've looked at Psalms before where

  230. there's this interjection of this word

  231. SA.

  232. And really any theologian and Christian

  233. historian worth their salt will tell you

  234. ultimately we do not know what that word

  235. means.

  236. But there's common agreement that what

  237. it might have and probably meant was a

  238. pause break when this worshipful

  239. rendition

  240. of the king who sits enthroned and is

  241. exalted above the whole earth that this

  242. would have been a moment in some

  243. churches where they say let's take a

  244. praise break

  245. and let's let the spirit move

  246. and let's just sit and acknowledge God's

  247. goodness and God's hand on this moment.

  248. Dare I say that often times we miss the

  249. sale moments in our life

  250. where God is moving and and God is

  251. working.

  252. You know what I noticed this morning

  253. about me?

  254. I had to take a deep breath this morning

  255. and I had to just sit and be still. So,

  256. I love how Pastor Eric last week when he

  257. preached through Psalm 46. If you've not

  258. heard it, you need to go online, reach

  259. thegrove.com/sermons,

  260. and listen to his sermon on Psalm 46.

  261. When he read Psalm 46:10,

    Psalms 46:10

  262. translations will usually render it this

  263. way, be still and know that I am God.

  264. But what is being said there, this

  265. picture that's being drawn in that

  266. passage is I love the way the CSB

  267. translated is stop fighting

  268. and know that he's God. How many of us

  269. are tired of fighting?

  270. And that's what I was reminded of this

  271. morning. When I wake up, when my alarm

  272. goes off on Sunday morning, I get up and

  273. I'm ready to hit the ground running.

  274. I shoot a text out to the servant

  275. leaders. I shoot a text out to the

  276. staff. I remind them of what Sunday's

  277. about, that we're in this together. And

  278. I'm ready to hit the ground running. I'm

  279. the first one here. I get here early. I

  280. have a moment where I'm able to pray

  281. that God would do a work in here. But

  282. today, that that angst and the angst is

  283. good. We want the angst. We want the

  284. fire. We want the passion. But here's

  285. what I began to notice that that the

  286. angst kept me going from from from

  287. moment to moment to moment, from project

  288. to project to project, from instant to

  289. instant to instant. that before I knew

  290. it, I started to feel anxiety creep in.

  291. And you know my story with anxiety. You

  292. know, I've dealt with over the last

  293. couple of years. And I f I have found

  294. that it tries to creep in. It tries to

  295. grab a foothold whenever I attempt to do

  296. things in my own strength. How many of

  297. us have ever attempted to do things in

  298. our own strength?

  299. And so all that to say, the spirit just

  300. reminded me, be still. Quit fighting.

  301. have a sa moment

  302. and just pause

  303. and let God do what God's going to do.

  304. That verbiage can be confusing because

  305. we don't let God do anything. God's

  306. going to do what God's going to do. But

  307. when we say let God do what God's going

  308. to do, what we really mean is that

  309. spirit, would you give me a greater

  310. awareness so I can recognize what God is

  311. doing and not be so focused on how I'm

  312. feeling.

  313. And so we continue here in verse 5.

  314. God ascends

  315. among shouts of joy. The Lord with the

  316. sound of a ram's horn.

  317. Sing praise to God. I love verse six.

  318. Sing praise. Sing praise to our king.

  319. Sing praise. What are we to sing?

  320. >> Praise.

  321. Verse seven.

  322. Sing a song of wisdom. For God is king

  323. of the whole earth.

  324. God reigns over the nations.

  325. God is seated on his holy throne. The

  326. nobles of the peoples have assembled

  327. with the people of the God of Abraham.

  328. For the leaders of the earth belong to

  329. God. And I love how the sons of Kora

  330. conclude this song. He is greatly

  331. exalted.

  332. And all God's people said,

  333. >> Lord, would you bless your word? Holy

  334. Spirit, would you stir our hearts this

  335. morning?

  336. This psalm is called an enthronement

  337. psalm because it's a depiction of the

  338. glory God receives

  339. as he reigns and rules seated on his

  340. throne. And here's the heartbeat of the

  341. passage. If there's anything that we

  342. recognize today, may we recognize this

  343. that God is the exalted king over all

  344. the earth. Not just your marriage, not

  345. just your family, not just your job, not

  346. just your health, not just in moments

  347. where you need him, but he is the

  348. exalted king over all the earth. And

  349. what's the result of that? All peoples

  350. are called to worship him. This is a

  351. celebration of God's reign.

  352. If we take the traditional view indeed

  353. that this was sung as the Israelites

  354. ushered the ark of the covenant back

  355. into Jerusalem. That gives us a greater

  356. understanding of the depth and

  357. celebration taking place here. And the

  358. way that we can contextualize it for us

  359. today is to recognize

  360. just as in 2 Samuel 6 as the ark of the

  361. covenant is being brought into

  362. Jerusalem. What do we know about the ark

  363. of the covenant in the Old Testament?

  364. It's where the presence of God dwelt.

  365. It's where the presence of God was

  366. seated. And so, there is this

  367. celebration. There is praise and this

  368. this resounding worship that's lifted up

  369. before the Lord because God is with his

  370. people. How much more should we

  371. celebrate now that God's presence

  372. doesn't dwell

  373. in buildings made by human hands, but in

  374. a temple that is of HUMAN FLESH? THAT

  375. GOD'S PRESENCE DWELLS in you. Psalm 47,

  376. church, should be the declaration of our

  377. hearts daily. This should be the worship

  378. that flows from our lips

  379. from the moment we wake to the moment

  380. that we sleep.

  381. That God, who is the exalted king over

  382. all the earth, I love this. He's not

  383. campaigning for authority. He's not

  384. competing with other rulers. We'll get

  385. to Psalm 9 here in just a moment. That

  386. declares that the leaders of the earth

  387. belong to him. But he reigns

  388. supreme.

  389. Let me put it in a very simple way. God

  390. is in control.

  391. And if God is in control, that means I'm

  392. not. And maybe for some of us type Aers,

  393. that kind of hits us a little different

  394. because we want to know point A to point

  395. B and the next step and what tomorrow's

  396. going to look like. Some of you have the

  397. rest of your year planned out. Praise

  398. God for organization. I love

  399. organization.

  400. Some of us are just so freespirited.

  401. We don't even know what's going on this

  402. afternoon. I don't know what I'm going

  403. to eat.

  404. Whatever my test buds are craving.

  405. But here's what we can agree on. That

  406. through it all, God remains in control.

  407. That God leads. God guides. God directs.

  408. And and and here's what I want us to

  409. understand. that God is the exalted king

  410. over all the earth that all peoples are

  411. called to worship him. This is not just

  412. an invitation to admire him as king.

  413. It's very easy when we gather in this

  414. place every single week, when we sing

  415. songs together, when we open the word

  416. together, when we declare the goodness

  417. of God together, when we when we visit

  418. together, it's very easy for us to sit

  419. in moments like this and experience

  420. moments like this and to say, "Yes, I

  421. admire him as king." But the question is

  422. not, "Do you admire him as king?" The

  423. question is, do you submit to him as

  424. king? Does he reign over your life as

  425. king? So, here's what I want to do.

  426. We're going to go back to our psalm.

  427. We're going to reference some verses

  428. here. And I want to pull out three

  429. scenes, three truths that we see from

  430. this passage. Three truths that were

  431. true then, they continue to be true

  432. today

  433. and truths that we can model our lives

  434. after. If you've ever wondered how can I

  435. live with such passion

  436. in the midst of all that is going on in

  437. my life in in the pain in the diagnosis

  438. in the test results in the finances and

  439. and in in the wayward we're child in the

  440. marriage that seems rocky like how can I

  441. glorify God through all of this? How can

  442. I maintain a spirit of celebration? And

  443. let me just hit the pause button for

  444. just a moment. Having a spirit of joy

  445. and celebration does not in any way,

  446. shape, or form reject the pain of

  447. somebody's life.

  448. Because what do we see time and time

  449. again throughout the scriptures? That

  450. even in the darkest valley, you can

  451. still see the light shining. That even

  452. in the fiercest storm, you can still

  453. experience peace.

  454. And we've said this so many times. There

  455. are so many stories woven throughout the

  456. people in this church who can testify to

  457. that reality

  458. that in the darkest of days where they

  459. experienced the greatest hope and the

  460. greatest joy and the greatest peace and

  461. the greatest comfort was in the midst of

  462. it not in the absence

  463. of it.

  464. So, as we live in this pattern of

  465. celebration,

  466. in this spirit of rejoicing over who God

  467. is, I want to draw out some truths. If

  468. you're taking notes, here's the first

  469. thing. We must behold the majesty of the

  470. King. If you remember a couple of weeks

  471. ago, we looked at this in Psalm 45.

  472. And there's this beautiful picture

  473. painted all throughout the book of

  474. Psalms that the very things that we

  475. treasure and value are the things that

  476. we are going to behold.

  477. And I've shared this story with you guys

  478. so many times. Let's see if you remember

  479. it. When my children were born, I

  480. remember when my first born, Kaa,

  481. I was 22 years old,

  482. first time dad. Everything was shocking.

  483. Nurses and doctors, every everybody is

  484. doing what they do. I don't know half of

  485. what's going on. Ka's born. Nurse says,

  486. "Dad, follow me." Give a kiss to

  487. Crystal. I go, I follow the nurse. We go

  488. and they start bathing her and they

  489. start doing all these things. And and I

  490. was just so in shock. I just remember I

  491. didn't say anything. I was just counting

  492. all her fingers and counting all her

  493. toes because in my mind, I'm like, "Let

  494. make sure she has 10 fingers. Let me

  495. make sure she has 10 toes."

  496. And the nurse says, "Dad, you can talk

  497. to her. It's okay.

  498. And there was a moment when I was able

  499. to to to pick her up and carry her and

  500. and I'm showing my my brother who's

  501. there. He's he's he's visiting and and

  502. my parents are there and my in-laws are

  503. there and I'm like, "Look." And we're

  504. all beholding

  505. this newborn, this this precious child

  506. parents, WE CAN RELATE WITH IT. WE'RE

  507. beholding

  508. because we love and we value and we

  509. treasure. Do we have that for Jesus?

  510. We're in that moment. I'm like, I'll do

  511. anything for you.

  512. I'll lay down my life for you. Do we do

  513. that for Jesus?

  514. And yes, Jesus laid down his life for

  515. us. But do you know what the scripture

  516. calls us to do? To crucify the flesh

  517. daily.

  518. to say no to the sin that you engage

  519. with constantly.

  520. And you know what sin it is. Even now,

  521. the Holy Spirit is bringing it to light,

  522. holding you accountable.

  523. Can I just lovingly call you to

  524. repentance

  525. right now? Let's just take a moment

  526. as we behold the majesty of our king.

  527. Can we just take a moment right now?

  528. I want you to name that sin

  529. and in your mind, grab onto it.

  530. And right now, let's just take a moment.

  531. Let's confess it before the Lord.

  532. Say, "God, I've struggled with this

  533. and I'm laying it at your feet.

  534. Would you forgive me?

  535. And spirit, would you grant me the

  536. strength

  537. to say no.

  538. So when temptation comes, and temptation

  539. will come. It's not a matter of if, it's

  540. a matter of when, would you pray that

  541. the Holy Spirit will give you the

  542. strength and the discipline to fill

  543. yourself with God's word?

  544. So when it's time to make a withdrawal

  545. of power and strength, you've been

  546. making deposits into your spirit to say

  547. no to whatever sin comes knocking at

  548. your door. Let's take a couple of

  549. seconds right now. You have your time

  550. with God.

  551. Thank you, Jesus.

  552. You know, as you confess that sin before

  553. the Lord, the scripture says there is

  554. indeed forgiveness. Praise God for his

  555. forgiveness.

  556. But the brother of Jesus, James, said

  557. this, that there's healing in

  558. confession.

  559. So, I want to encourage you to do this.

  560. It's going to get uncomfortable. That's

  561. okay. This is where iron sharpens iron.

  562. Find a trusted friend.

  563. Not someone who's going to post it on

  564. Facebook. Not someone the moment you're

  565. done talking with them is going to text

  566. a group and say, "Do you know what so-

  567. and so told me?" I mean, find a trusted

  568. friend

  569. that you can confess that to cuz yes,

  570. there's there is forgiveness in our

  571. confession before the Lord. The

  572. scripture says there's healing when we

  573. confess it to one another.

  574. The devil wants us to hold on to our sin

  575. and to keep it here

  576. rather than confessing it out there.

  577. Because once you confess it, this is why

  578. James talks about the power of words.

  579. About how words build up and words

  580. destroy and how words like the rudder of

  581. a ship or the brattle of a horse, they

  582. steer us. Because when we make a

  583. confession, we get it out. We release

  584. it. And God does a work in us when we

  585. behold the majesty of the King. It's not

  586. just an invitation to admire him. It's

  587. an invitation

  588. to submit to him. Let's look at verse

  589. one real quick. I love how this psalm

  590. opens up.

  591. Clap your hands all you peoples.

  592. Shout to God with a jubilant

  593. cry. Here's what I love. The beholding

  594. of the majesty of God is not just

  595. reserved for a particular people group.

  596. And you notice the verbiage here, the

  597. language

  598. that is being used.

  599. So clap your hand. There's action

  600. and the action is for all peoples.

  601. This is why the scripture come full

  602. circle. Revelation 7 will say that as

  603. John as he was exiled on the island of

  604. Patmas for praising God. Mind you,

  605. he had a vision.

  606. In his vision, he writes it down. We

  607. know that as a book of Revelation. In

  608. Revelation chapter 7, he writes down

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  609. this vision of seeing the throne of God.

  610. And every tribe, every nation, every

  611. people is encircled around the throne

  612. and they are glorifying him. They are

  613. beholding his majesty. And what is Psalm

  614. 47 doing? Psalm 47 is inviting us into

  615. that beholding. Psalm 47 is inviting us

  616. into that worship. Church, who is your

  617. king?

  618. Verse two tells us why.

  619. For the Lord, the most high is all

  620. inspiring,

  621. a great king over the earth.

  622. Why do we praise him?

  623. Because he's the most high.

  624. We don't praise him for what he's done.

  625. We do. But we praise him for who he is.

  626. Roland, what are you getting at? That

  627. means that I praise God regardless.

  628. When the days are dark, I praise God.

  629. When the diagnosis is bleak, I praise

  630. God. When the finances are little, I

  631. praise God. When things are not going

  632. well, I praise God. Because if all we

  633. ever do is behold the majesty of God,

  634. when things are going well, then we'll

  635. never behold the majesty of God. because

  636. we'll look to every other reason why we

  637. shouldn't.

  638. Now, here the psalmist makes it clear.

  639. For the Lord, the most high

  640. is all inspiring,

  641. a great king over the whole earth. I

  642. wonder sometimes

  643. maybe

  644. if we unintentionally have reduced God

  645. What do I mean by that?

  646. I wonder if maybe we look to him

  647. as just a counselor

  648. instead of our king.

  649. If we want him to help us with our plans

  650. instead of us submitting to his plans.

  651. Psalm 47 refuses

  652. to think that way.

  653. Psalm 47 reminds us that he is exalted

  654. over all the earth. Now, dads, you

  655. thought you were going to get away this

  656. morning. Let me speak to you for just a

  657. moment.

  658. One of the greatest gifts that you can

  659. give your children,

  660. that you can give your family, your

  661. home,

  662. is to aim their hearts at the Lord.

  663. is to model to them what it means to

  664. behold the majesty of the king.

  665. Your family doesn't need you to pretend

  666. like you have it all together.

  667. What your family needs is a man of God

  668. who in the midst of the chaos that,

  669. let's be honest, is life recognizes a

  670. man

  671. who in the routine, the busyiness, and

  672. the hustle,

  673. takes time to sail,

  674. and to behold the majesty of the king.

  675. Because here's the reality. Long after

  676. You are forgotten.

  677. That sounds harsh, but can you remember

  678. your grandfather's name? Yes. Your

  679. great-grandfather's name? Probably. Your

  680. great greatgrandfather's name? Maybe.

  681. But I'd bargain to say four or five

  682. generations before you, you probably

  683. don't remember their name.

  684. But do you know what? Your family will

  685. remember

  686. the way you behold the majesty of the

  687. king.

  688. Here's the second thing that we see.

  689. It's not just about beholding the

  690. majesty of the King, but when we behold

  691. the majesty of the King, it leads to

  692. something else. Did you pick that up

  693. here in our psalm? It leads to praise,

  694. to celebration, to worship. This is what

  695. we see. We're to celebrate the victory

  696. of the king. Let's look at verse three.

  697. He subdues peoples

  698. under us and nations under our feet. At

  699. first glance, this wording sounds weird.

  700. What are they talking about here? Here's

  701. what the sons of Kora, here's the

  702. picture that they're painting. THAT IT

  703. IS GOD WHO gives the victory.

  704. It is God who wins the battle. This is

  705. why Paul will tell us in the New

  706. Testament in the book of Romans that we

  707. are more than conquerors through Jesus

  708. Christ our Lord.

  709. What does it mean to be more than a

  710. conqueror? It means that you celebrate

  711. the benefits of someone else who has

  712. done the conquering for you.

  713. Someone else secured and purchased the

  714. victory. And now the spoils of that

  715. victory, the promises of that victory,

  716. the inheritance of that victory becomes

  717. yours. You did not have to do anything

  718. for it. Simply by virtue of being

  719. attached, connected, and related to the

  720. victor, you get the benefits. And what

  721. does that mean for us? We're children of

  722. God.

  723. And what does God do? God gives the

  724. victory. Roland, how is he given the

  725. victory? Victory over what? Over sin,

  726. death, and the grave. And he's done that

  727. through his son, Jesus Christ.

  728. He put on flesh, was born of a virgin,

  729. lived 33 and a half years in perfect

  730. fulfillment of the law of God. This is

  731. why we look to the Old Testament. This

  732. is why the New Testament looks to the

  733. Old Testament and through Jesus

  734. recognizes he's the lamb of God who has

  735. fulfilled the law of God so that through

  736. the grace of God, we might become

  737. children of God.

  738. This is who Jesus is. And it's through

  739. him that God purchased the victory. And

  740. so through his life, he fulfills the

  741. law. Through his death, he pays the

  742. penalty for your sin and for my sin.

  743. Just a moment ago, that sin that you

  744. confessed before the Lord, Jesus died

  745. for it.

  746. Don't go back to it.

  747. Christ shed his blood for it.

  748. And three days later, he didn't remain

  749. dead. He rose from the grave in victory.

  750. And after he rose from the grave in

  751. victory, 40 days later, he ascended back

  752. to the throne. He was never truly off

  753. it, but he ascends back to the right

  754. hand of the father. And right now

  755. he pleads our case. He walks with us. He

  756. talks with us.

  757. And he tells me I am his own.

  758. And the joy we share as we t their call

  759. me.

  760. None other has ever known. That's us.

  761. That's what we'll experience to Jesus.

  762. And guess what?

  763. We wait in hope and anticipation of this

  764. victory that we celebrate here. With

  765. every song that we sing, with every

  766. scripture that we read, with every Bible

  767. study we're engaged in, with every kid

  768. we have to corral and tell them sit

  769. down, stay quiet during vacation bible

  770. school. Every plate that we hand out on

  771. Wednesday nights in church events, every

  772. prayer that's ushered up, it's a

  773. celebration of THE VICTORY OF GOD. LET'S

  774. NEVER FORGET why we do what we do.

  775. Everything we do matters. Which is why

  776. later on the psalmist will say, "Sing a

  777. song of wisdom."

  778. Why wisdom? Why not joy? Why not hope?

  779. Why not peace? All those things are

  780. true, but why wisdom? Because the

  781. psalmist wants us to know that how we

  782. worship matters. That who we worship

  783. matters. that everything that we do

  784. makes a difference. From your

  785. interactions at work to the words you

  786. speak to your family to the things that

  787. happen in this community in the public,

  788. it all matters. Let's celebrate God

  789. together. And and here's the thing. Some

  790. of us, we we walk into church,

  791. we carry burdens that we were never

  792. meant to carry alone. And I think

  793. because we like to control things,

  794. we like to dictate the outcome of

  795. things. And and what Psalm 47 does is

  796. reminds us

  797. that we do not have the ability to

  798. secure the victory. God does. Look at

  799. verse 5.

  800. God ascends among shouts of joy. The

  801. Lord with the sound of a ram's

  802. horn. What does that mean? That means

  803. there's a celebration

  804. >> because God has secured

  805. the victory.

  806. And might I say this, I believe, and

  807. this is from personal experience, often

  808. times it's not until we begin

  809. celebrating what God is doing that it

  810. opens us up to what God is doing.

  811. And sometimes we wait,

  812. well, I'll wait till I see what God is

  813. doing so I can begin to celebrate. But

  814. remember, we don't celebrate God. We

  815. don't behold the majesty of God because

  816. of what God does. PRAISE GOD FOR WHAT HE

  817. DOES. He saves lives. Yes and amen.

  818. But we behold the majesty of God because

  819. he's majestic. Period. Because of who he

  820. is.

  821. Dads, let me speak to you real quick

  822. again.

  823. We know the pressure of what it means to

  824. lead. Or at least I hope you do.

  825. Some men don't lead well.

  826. Let's just say it. Some men don't lead

  827. well.

  828. You work a job. You provide for your

  829. family financially. Praise God for that.

  830. But some men just don't lead spiritually

  831. at home.

  832. You provide well. You protect well, but

  833. you don't lead well.

  834. And I want you to hear me carefully.

  835. You are called to lead your family.

  836. Be a man who not only beholds the

  837. majesty of God, but celebrates the

  838. victories of God.

  839. And the way that you celebrate the

  840. victories of God is you you recognize

  841. that the one who saves your family, the

  842. one who reigns over your family, the one

  843. who is far better than carrying your

  844. family is the Lord is the Lord Jesus.

  845. And the strongest fathers, the manliest

  846. of fathers, I I think the church needs

  847. to redeem what it means to be a man. The

  848. strongest fathers, the manliest of

  849. fathers are not those who carry the

  850. greatest burdens.

  851. They're the fathers of the one who

  852. they're the fathers of the one who

  853. trusts

  854. to carry the burdens.

  855. And so if the king is majestic and the

  856. king is victorious, then he deserves our

  857. admiration. And we'll close on this.

  858. Here's the third thing that we seek.

  859. We're called to submit to the king.

  860. What I what I love particularly about

  861. verse six

  862. is there's one call here

  863. and that's to sing praises to God.

  864. Verse seven explains why.

  865. For God is king over the earth.

  866. Church, who is your king?

  867. Because the word of God declares that

  868. there's one king and he's king over

  869. the earth.

  870. And then I love verse eight. Verse 8

  871. says something profound here.

  872. Says that God reigns over the nations

  873. and God is seated on his holy throne.

  874. There is a throne at the center of

  875. everything.

  876. And it is from that throne that

  877. everything is influenced

  878. that things are directed. The the

  879. council is received. And for the

  880. believer, for the world,

  881. like that throne should be the throne of

  882. God.

  883. Psalm 47 declares that this throne that

  884. is above every throne, this king that is

  885. above every king, that that his reign

  886. extends into everything. And as you

  887. behold his majesty, as you celebrate his

  888. victory, have you submitted to his reign

  889. and his authority?

  890. Have you said no to you and yes

  891. to him?

  892. Because verse 9 gives us a clue of where

  893. all this is heading.

  894. If you remember when we read Psalm 45,

  895. we talked about how beautiful will it be

  896. when we are in heaven with the Lord and

  897. and the completion of the bridegroom

  898. Jesus and the bride, the church, that

  899. consummation is fulfilled in his kingdom

  900. forever. That Psalm 45 is read at that

  901. moment. And we get to see the prophetic

  902. fulfillment of that because remember

  903. Psalm 45 was this wedding song that was

  904. written about an earthly king in the

  905. Davidic dynasty. But it was also a

  906. shadow of the king Jesus

  907. who would come and complete his bride,

  908. the church. How amazing will it be

  909. when we get to heaven and Psalm 47 in

  910. its reality and prophetic fulfillment is

  911. read aloud and all of us rejoice because

  912. this is where it's leading. Verse N. The

  913. nobles of the peoples have assembled

  914. with the people of the God of Abraham.

  915. For the leaders of the earth belong to

  916. who? Belong to God.

  917. You may not agree with who's in charge

  918. government-wise, politically,

  919. but they'll never outshine who's really

  920. in charge.

  921. >> That's God.

  922. He is greatly

  923. exalted.

  924. So let me just ask you the question that

  925. Psalm 47 asks. Who is your

  926. king?

  927. Have you enthroned him or have you

  928. merely invited him into a kingdom where

  929. you're still on the throne? If so,

  930. today's the day that you repent of that,

  931. that you turn to him, that you cry out

  932. for forgiveness. Because the good news

  933. of the gospel

  934. is that this king, King Jesus, is not

  935. just exalted.

  936. Not only, but he's he's gracious

  937. and he took on flesh. He died for your

  938. sin. He rose victoriously.

  939. He ascended into heaven. And today, he

  940. invites sinners to come to him. Would

  941. you pray with me?

  942. Lord, we thank you for your word.

  943. We thank you for how you move and how

  944. you work.

  945. And even now,

  946. God, would you just continue to stir

  947. people's lives and hearts?

  948. Call sinners to repentance.

  949. Call people to rise up and serve, to

  950. lead, to be who you've called us to be.

  951. Lord, we are grateful for you. And it's

  952. in your holy name we pray. All God's

  953. people said, "Amen." Would you stand to

  954. your feet with me? Hey, we're going to

  955. worship together. We're going to close

  956. our service. We're going to sing

  957. together.

  958. Let the words on the screen be the

  959. prayer of your heart. This is a time of

  960. response.

  961. Our altar is going to be open. Pastor

  962. Eric and myself, we'll be available. We

  963. we'd love to pray with you. If you need

  964. someone to pray with, someone to share

  965. with, maybe you want to celebrate a

  966. blessing and you want to lift up the

  967. name of Jesus. We we'd love to celebrate

  968. that blessing with you. Maybe you want

  969. to pray on behalf of someone, maybe an

  970. appointment coming up. Whatever that

  971. prayer need is, we'd love to pray that

  972. with you. Or if you'd love to have some

  973. one-on-one time with the Lord, dads, if

  974. you want to bring your family, just have

  975. some one-on-one time with the Lord, this

  976. is an opportunity for you to do that. If

  977. the Holy Spirit is stirring you this

  978. morning and is stirring you to faith in

  979. Christ, we'd love to walk that road with

  980. you. We're in this together. I love you,

  981. church.
