  1. All right. If you have a Bible or an

  2. app, open it up. We're going to be in

  3. the Gospel of Matthew this morning.

  4. >> Matthew chapter 5. We're going to be

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  5. reading verses 13- 16. Now, over the

  6. past couple of weeks, we have been in an

  7. annual series that we call Mythbusters.

  8. And what this series allows us to do is

  9. look at myths that are uh pervasive and

  10. oftent times persuasive in the culture.

  11. And it allows us an opportunity to hit

  12. the pause button and say, "What does the

  13. Bible say about these things?" And so,

  14. we've looked at some myths that go this

  15. way. You are enough.

  16. You are the commander of your own

  17. destiny. We've looked at myths that will

  18. say, "Follow your heart. If it feels

  19. right to you, then it must be true."

  20. And as we hit the pause button to open

  21. up the scriptures, to look at what the

  22. Bible says about the very things that

  23. social media throws in our face, that

  24. the news reports on that conversations

  25. that we have, even in our circle of

  26. friends, maybe even with family members,

  27. it allows us to say, "What does God's

  28. word say? How can we live our lives

  29. looking at every part of the world that

  30. we live in through the lens of truth?"

  31. This is really the crux. This is the

  32. foundation of this sermon series. This

  33. should be the foundation of our lives.

  34. That everything we say, everything we

  35. think, everything we do, choices,

  36. decisions, how we engage in

  37. relationships, how we go about

  38. stewarding our finances, how we go about

  39. resourcing our time and our talents.

  40. Everything about us should be viewed and

  41. filtered through the lens of biblical

  42. truth. You know, when I was growing up,

  43. there was a diagnostic question that we

  44. can ask ourselves to ensure that we were

  45. indeed operating in accordance with

  46. biblical standards. And you guys

  47. remember this question. It was, "What

  48. would Jesus do?"

  49. Today, it sounds cliche, but it's rooted

  50. in eternal truth.

  51. No matter what we approach in life, no

  52. matter what we face, and I would bet

  53. some of you are facing some choices,

  54. some difficult circumstances right now,

  55. and you're wondering, "How do I navigate

  56. them? If I choose door number one, my

  57. future looks this way. If I choose door

  58. number two, my future looks this way. I

  59. don't know what to do." The question

  60. that we should ask always and forever

  61. is, "Well, what would my Lord and Savior

  62. do? What does God the Father expect of

  63. me as someone who claims Son as Lord and

  64. Savior and who is called to operate by

  65. the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit

  66. that indwells, rests, and empowers

  67. believers?

  68. What would Jesus do? So this morning

  69. we're going to look at another myth that

  70. unfortunately seems to pervade society.

  71. Often times it's phrased this way or at

  72. least I've heard it this way phrased

  73. before. There are two things you don't

  74. discuss at family gatherings.

  75. Politics and religion.

  76. There seems to be this cultural belief

  77. that your faith is fine so long as your

  78. faith remains your faith. So long as

  79. your faith remains private. You can

  80. believe in Jesus all you want. Just

  81. don't impose your biblical standards on

  82. my life. Don't hold me accountable.

  83. Don't bring biblical truth my way. But

  84. what does the Bible say about this

  85. cultural myth? Are we called to be a

  86. people who cling to hope, faith, and

  87. trust in Jesus Christ and then tuck it

  88. away in a prayer closet, never to be

  89. shined brightly to a world in need?

  90. Absolutely

  91. not.

  92. If there's one thing I want us to

  93. understand this morning is that if you

  94. claim to be a Christian,

  95. Christ in you should be Christ through

  96. you. Not just on Sunday mornings, but

  97. Monday morning at the office, Tuesday

  98. afternoon at the pickup line, Wednesday

  99. night when you're hanging out with

  100. friends, Thursday and Friday at the

  101. football games, Christ in you should be

  102. Christ through you. And while the world

  103. says keep your faith private, Jesus says

  104. let your light shine before the world.

  105. >> And this is what we're looking at this

  106. morning.

  107. This idea that faith is to remain

  108. private goes against everything the

  109. Bible declares

  110. God's people to be. And while the gospel

  111. and our relationship with Jesus indeed

  112. is deeply and profoundly personal, yes,

  113. it is never meant to be private.

  114. It must shine for the world to see.

  115. And maybe you're like me because I'm

  116. skeptical by nature. I think that's part

  117. of the reason I'm so intrigued by the

  118. Bible. I'll I'll read things and I'll

  119. be, "Wait a minute. Why does it say

  120. that? Why does God expect that of us,

  121. which then prompts me and compels me to

  122. then look at cross references, look at

  123. the context, look at the history,

  124. because I want to understand more of who

  125. God is." And so maybe you're hearing me

  126. this morning and and what you are

  127. hearing is, "Well, does Roland want me

  128. to stand on my soap box and become a

  129. street preacher? Become one of those

  130. annoying Bible thumpers? Is this what

  131. Roland is saying that we need to do?

  132. That this is who we need to be?" I'm

  133. glad you asked that question

  134. because we're going to dive into what

  135. does this really look like for the

  136. believer.

  137. This should be so natural for us

  138. that it doesn't come across as one

  139. standing on their soapbox,

  140. as one who's casting judgment, as as one

  141. who thinks they're better than others.

  142. As a matter of fact, the Bible would

  143. speak against that sort of attitude.

  144. The goal is that we would be so consumed

  145. with Jesus that the natural overflow of

  146. our lives demonstrates the gospel in our

  147. life.

  148. And here's the plain truth. Jesus never

  149. envisioned, the gospel never paints a

  150. picture where Christianity is unseen.

  151. You were saved not to tuck away your

  152. faith but to show your faith. So let's

  153. go to the words of Jesus in Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  154. chapter 5 beginning in verse 13. We'll

  155. read on to verse

  156. 16. Now I want us to understand this is

  157. coming right at the conclusion of what

  158. Jesus has been preaching in what we call

  159. the sermon on the mount. And if you're

  160. familiar with the sermon on the mount,

  161. Jesus takes an opportunity during that

  162. sermon to preach what we call the

  163. biatitudes.

  164. So Jesus is letting people know his

  165. followers that if you are a believer in

  166. Jesus, if you have placed faith in the

  167. father through the son indwelled by the

  168. uh power of the holy spirit, then this

  169. is what's expected of you. This is how

  170. you can be known as a child of God. This

  171. is how you can be acknowledged as a

  172. citizen of God's kingdom when these

  173. things take place. Which is why the

  174. biatitudes will start with the word

  175. blessed.

  176. Blessed are those who and Jesus goes

  177. through a sum of them. And then at the

  178. end

  179. he gets to a reality

  180. that every Christian at some point and

  181. at some level will face that is

  182. opposition to the truth that we claim

  183. and opposition to the gospel that we

  184. hold so so dear.

  185. Every believer at some point and

  186. according to some level will undergo

  187. oppression, opposition and persecution.

  188. And the goal of what Jesus tells us in

  189. verses 13- 16 is that persecution

  190. should be an expected part of the

  191. Christian life. Why? Because we're not

  192. ashamed of the gospel.

  193. That the gospel should shine so brightly

  194. through our lives that when people hate

  195. it, they will hate you. Hm. Didn't Jesus

  196. say something very similar?

  197. The world will hate you, but take heart.

  198. The world has hated me first.

  199. Which is why time and time again,

  200. specifically throughout the New

  201. Testament, you'll have the biblical

  202. writers talk about joy in suffering,

  203. that they'll rejoice in trials.

  204. Why? Not because those things are joyful

  205. in and of themselves, but because they

  206. know that that process has associated

  207. them with Jesus.

  208. What they're rejoicing at is their team

  209. Jesus and that Christ is being

  210. recognized through them. So verse 13

  211. here in Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  212. here's how it reads. Remember Jesus is

  213. preaching here.

  214. You

  215. you

  216. this is written in the emphatic.

  217. What that means is this isn't a

  218. generalization. This is you Roland.

  219. Christ is speaking to you son of God,

  220. daughter of God, child of God. If you

  221. have placed your whole faith and trust

  222. in Jesus as Lord and Savior, you need to

  223. insert your name there. You are the salt

  224. of the earth.

  225. But

  226. if the salt should lose its taste,

  227. how can it be made salty? It is no

  228. longer good for anything but to be

  229. thrown out and trampled under people's

  230. feet. Notice that Jesus is beginning

  231. with identity here.

  232. You are salt.

  233. This is who you are. Because here at the

  234. conclusion of our passage, he's going to

  235. get at what you should be doing.

  236. And what you should be doing should

  237. always, if we're talking biblically

  238. here, should be rooted in who you are.

  239. Or to better phrase it, should be rooted

  240. in who's you are. He continues verse 14.

  241. You, again, the emphatic, it's not a

  242. general statement. It's your name. You

  243. are the light of the world.

  244. A city that is situated on a hill cannot

  245. be hidden. Don't hide your light. Don't

  246. hide your faith. There's a beautiful

  247. picture that Jesus is painting here with

  248. his words. No city that illuminates the

  249. night sky can be hidden.

  250. No one lights a lamp, verse 15, and puts

  251. it under a basket, but rather on a

  252. lampstand,

  253. and it gives light for all who are in

  254. the house. Here's the reality for so

  255. many of us. You might be the only light

  256. people see.

  257. You might be the only light in your

  258. friend group. You might be the only

  259. light in the office. You might be the

  260. only light in your home.

  261. Jesus calls you to take that light of

  262. truth, to take that light of the gospel,

  263. set it on a lampstand so that those in

  264. your circle, those in your perimeter can

  265. recognize that light that shines in you

  266. and through you. It gives light for all

  267. who are in the house. Verse 16.

  268. In the same way,

  269. let your light shine before others.

  270. Remember what do we have in verse 13?

  271. This is your identity.

  272. Now, this is the overflow of your

  273. identity, your salt, your light, the

  274. result. Let it shine so that they may

  275. see your good works. We'll get to this

  276. here in just a moment. and give glory to

  277. your father who is in heaven. And all

  278. God's people said,

  279. >> Lord, would you bless your word? Holy

  280. Spirit, would you stir our hearts this

  281. morning?

  282. This is a powerful powerful passage

  283. particularly when Jesus begins to unpack

  284. what it looks like and what it means for

  285. those who claim sunship and daughtership

  286. and claim God as their eternal father

  287. through faith in Jesus Christ. And then

  288. he begins to unpack the reality of

  289. Christians past, present and future that

  290. persecution, opposition and oppression

  291. is a reality that we will face. And what

  292. happens when that comes? What happens

  293. when we encounter that? We don't

  294. retreat. We don't run away. We dig in.

  295. We stand firm. We endure

  296. because he who exists rests and lives

  297. through us and in us is greater than the

  298. one. His enemies,

  299. the demons

  300. that would come against us.

  301. And if you're familiar with the entirety

  302. of Matthew's gospel here in Matthew

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  303. chapter 4 as Jesus begins his public

  304. ministry, he calls us to repentance and

  305. then he reminds us that the kingdom of

  306. God has come near. And that's biblical

  307. talk to say that the kingdom of God is

  308. not something far and away. It's not

  309. something that we wait for when we draw

  310. our last breath and then magically

  311. appear in God's kingdom when we awaken

  312. in the afterlife. No, God is

  313. demonstrating through the words of Jesus

  314. that his kingdom is visible and can be

  315. experienced right now. God's kingdom

  316. exists in and among us. Which is why it

  317. is so important that as citizens of that

  318. kingdom, we would represent that kingdom

  319. well. And you can't represent the

  320. kingdom you're a citizen of if you keep

  321. that citizenship private.

  322. It must be displayed.

  323. It must shine. It must show.

  324. Jesus knows

  325. that public identification with him is

  326. vital to the advancement of his kingdom.

  327. This is why we celebrate baptism so

  328. much.

  329. Because when you are baptized,

  330. that is the first step in publicly

  331. identifying with Christ and his kingdom.

  332. When you are washed by the blood and

  333. then washed by the water, you are

  334. declaring to a world in need, I belong

  335. to Jesus and I am unashshamed.

  336. Jesus never envisioned a Christianity

  337. that could be faithfully lived without

  338. anybody noticing.

  339. And if you claim to be a faithful

  340. Christian, but no one knows that you're

  341. a Christian, you're not living

  342. faithfully. This might rattle some of

  343. y'all. You're living unfaithfully

  344. because Christianity was never meant to

  345. be private. And here's the point. The

  346. point is that Christians need to become

  347. abn

  348. obnoxiously

  349. obnoxiously public about everything they

  350. believe.

  351. And that only happens through genuine

  352. obedience and disciplehip that is

  353. visible in our lives, visible in our

  354. words, visible in our priorities,

  355. visible in how we make decisions,

  356. relationships, how we're generous with

  357. what God has entrusted us with, visible

  358. in how you're compassionate to others,

  359. in the convictions that you hold, in the

  360. integrity that should be our lives. So

  361. here's what I want to do. I want to look

  362. at three things that I believe we can

  363. draw from our passage that show us what

  364. a visible faith looks like and what a

  365. visible faith does. So, we'll go through

  366. each of those three things. We'll look

  367. back on our passage and we'll pray

  368. and we'll cling to the truth of God's

  369. word

  370. and maybe for some of us repent

  371. from privately keeping what God is meant

  372. to be public

  373. and maybe for others to be affirmed and

  374. sharpened that you're doing what God has

  375. called you to do. So if you're taking

  376. notes, here's the first thing we want to

  377. look at. Your faith should make you

  378. different. That goes without saying. If

  379. you're familiar at all with what

  380. Christianity is and what the Bible calls

  381. us to do and who the Bible calls us to

  382. be, we know that our faith should make

  383. us different. That is why there is such

  384. emphasis right here in verse 13.

  385. You are the salt of the earth. Let me

  386. stop there for just a moment. What is

  387. salt meant to do

  388. in our culture? It's meant to flavor

  389. things.

  390. It's meant to bring out the best. Now,

  391. if you know me, you know I'm a foodie. I

  392. love food.

  393. And there's something unique about salt.

  394. When it's placed on food, it's meant to

  395. allow you to taste the best of the

  396. chef's offerings.

  397. >> This is what salt does. Salt flavors.

  398. Some of you need to be the flavor. Well,

  399. maybe you don't need to be the flavor in

  400. your office. That just sounds really

  401. weird.

  402. But you need to bring life into your

  403. office.

  404. You need to bring a recognition

  405. of Christ living in you and and through

  406. you.

  407. You need to demonstrate the joy of the

  408. Lord in your life.

  409. This is how we bring flavor to a world

  410. in need. But salt doesn't just provide

  411. flavor. And more contextually speaking

  412. in what Jesus is getting at here in

  413. Matthew 5, what does salt do? Now think

  414. the ancient world

  415. preserves.

  416. Salt preserves.

  417. And in a world that undoubtedly is going

  418. to pot. In a world that undoubtedly is

  419. being polluted, adulterated, marred,

  420. formed, and and shaped by the evil and

  421. chaos that exists.

  422. We're called to preserve the goodness,

  423. the holiness, and the righteousness

  424. that Christ lived to uphold.

  425. That he died so that the Holy Spirit

  426. would empower us through faith in him to

  427. live out. We're called to preserve that.

  428. What does that look like for our life?

  429. Are we living in such a way where we are

  430. different? Salt was incredibly valuable

  431. throughout the ancient world. So much so

  432. that it was actually used as a form of

  433. currency

  434. for many. This is the value that salt

  435. had. So it's not lost on the listeners

  436. here that Jesus is proclaiming this to

  437. of what he means when he says you are

  438. the salt of the earth. This is on this

  439. is not on the screen, but I did some

  440. more cross reference in here and I

  441. thought this was incredible. Leviticus

    Leviticus 2:13

  442. chapter 2 verse 13 talks about and

  443. associates

  444. being seasoned and preserved by salt.

  445. It's associated with purity. And oftent

  446. times throughout the Old Testament,

  447. you'll pick up on this phrase, a

  448. covenant of salt.

  449. In other words, an agreement, a promise,

  450. a covenant

  451. that is being illustrated and

  452. demonstrated through what salt is meant

  453. to do, which is preserved.

  454. So, this is no lights or momentary

  455. moment

  456. for the listeners of Jesus.

  457. They're recognizing a profound and

  458. eternal truth. And this is the way

  459. Leviticus chapter 2 phrases it. You are

    Leviticus 2 chapter mention

  460. to season each of your grain offerings

  461. with salt.

  462. You must not omit from your grain

  463. offering the salt of your covenant with

  464. God.

  465. What you bring before God should be

  466. seasoned by the salt of your life. When

  467. we gather here and we sing songs before

  468. the Lord. When we give of our tithes and

  469. our offerings. When we're serving in

  470. ministries. When we're gathered in Bible

  471. study, growing in God's word. as you sit

  472. there taking notes and listening, you

  473. should season it with the salt of your

  474. life

  475. because Jesus has paid the once and for

  476. all sacrifice.

  477. And so the sacrifice that Christ that

  478. God the Father in Christ requires now

  479. from you is what? A sacrifice of praise,

  480. a sacrifice of worship. And that takes

  481. place when your life is lived

  482. differently.

  483. We also know this about salt. Salt

  484. changes whatever it touches

  485. precisely because it's different from

  486. what it touches.

  487. God doesn't save us out of the world

  488. merely to isolate us from the world. He

  489. saves us from the world so that through

  490. our transformation and salvation, we

  491. would be a testimony and witness to the

  492. world that Christ is better. This is the

  493. entire argument of the book of Hebrews.

  494. And I've heard it put this way. This

  495. isn't original.

  496. Christian holiness

  497. should never be done in isolation.

  498. Now, that doesn't mean that you're not

  499. holy when you're in private, but the

  500. picture it's painting here is that

  501. holiness should be seen in public. Now,

  502. now notice the rest of this verse, verse

  503. 13. But if the salt should lose its

  504. taste, how can it be made salty? Here's

  505. the beautiful thing. I don't want us to

  506. miss this. Pure salt can never lose its

  507. taste.

  508. However, in the ancient world, the

  509. danger that pure salt faced was that it

  510. could be contaminated by other minerals,

  511. by other deposits. It could be

  512. contaminated by other things. It also

  513. faced what was called salt leeching. In

  514. other words, if moisture entered the

  515. environment, then the salt would leech

  516. away. It would evaporate. It wouldn't be

  517. there anymore. And what appeared to be

  518. salt was not really salt. Therefore, it

  519. was no longer useful for preservation.

  520. It was no longer useful for flavor.

  521. Here's what Jesus is getting at. You are

  522. set apart to bring flavor and

  523. preservation to the world in need. But

  524. so many of us can fall into the trap of

  525. allowing outside things to influence us.

  526. So therefore, we're no longer salt.

  527. We're no longer bringing flavor and

  528. preservation to the world because now we

  529. look just like the world rather than

  530. looking different rather than living

  531. different rather than operating

  532. differently. And Jesus gives us a

  533. warning. Don't lose your saltiness.

  534. You are meant to be set apart.

  535. And here's where we can be challenged.

  536. Here's the diagnostic for us. If your

  537. beliefs,

  538. if your lifestyle,

  539. if your words, your decision-making are

  540. identical to the culture,

  541. if your morality and way of living and

  542. thinking are identical to the culture,

  543. if your priorities are identical to the

  544. culture, if your relationships are

  545. identical to the culture, you have to

  546. ask yourself, where's the salt?

  547. Has the salt of my life become

  548. tasteless?

  549. Is it being trampled underfoot because

  550. I'm identifying more with the world than

  551. I am with Christ who came to save me

  552. from it? Because if following Jesus

  553. never makes you different

  554. if it never brings transformation

  555. in your life, then how can the church

  556. ever make a difference in the world? How

  557. can truth ever be spotted and recognized

  558. in a world and culture that is filled

  559. with lies? So church, your faith should

  560. make you different. Here's the second

  561. thing we see.

  562. Your faith should be impossible to hide.

  563. Your life should overflow

  564. and result in a lifestyle that shines

  565. Christ in every part of your life.

  566. That should be the natural flow of your

  567. life because you are in such a desperate

  568. and meaningful and intentional pursuit

  569. of Christ. So those things become second

  570. nature for you. They become natural for

  571. you.

  572. It's impossible for me to hide the love

  573. I have for my wife, the love I have for

  574. my kids. Why? Because that's the natural

  575. overflow of my relationship with them.

  576. It's the same way with your relationship

  577. with Jesus. What is a natural overflow?

  578. And it should overflow so powerfully and

  579. so visibly that it's impossible to hide

  580. it. Go with me to verses 14 through 15.

  581. You are the light of the world.

  582. A city situated on a hill cannot cannot

  583. be hidden.

  584. And yet,

  585. maybe through fear and shame,

  586. embarrassment,

  587. or or maybe it's just ignorance.

  588. So many people who profess Christ as

  589. savior with their words do not profess

  590. Christ as Lord with their lives.

  591. And so they take the truth, they they

  592. take the light that should illuminate

  593. the darkness

  594. that we are so trapped in.

  595. They hide it. They They tuck it away.

  596. They put it under a basket.

  597. And Jesus says, "A city on a hill cannot

  598. be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts

  599. it under a basket, but rather on a

  600. lampstand, and it gives life for all who

  601. are in the house."

  602. It was Isaiah chapter 49. And if you're

    Isaiah 49 chapter mention

  603. familiar with the writings of Isaiah,

  604. Isaiah was a prophet called by God

  605. to proclaim the love and judgment of God

  606. to a people who were rebelling against

  607. God. And time and time again, Israel is

  608. reminding them of who they are so they

  609. can understand who they are called to

  610. be, what they are called to live out.

  611. And this is why Isaiah is so powerful

  612. when it comes to messianic tones. During

  613. Christmas time, we hear a lot about

  614. Isaiah because Isaiah, as he's

  615. proclaiming the judgments of God to the

  616. people of God who are rebelling against

  617. God, he's reminding them, hey, a Messiah

  618. is going to come one day and he will

  619. save us from all of this. So don't lose

  620. heart. Don't lose faith. Cling to the

  621. Lord in hope. Cling to the Lord in

  622. trust. Don't hide from him. run to him

  623. because he is sending his son one day to

  624. set us free. And here's the beautiful

  625. thing for us on this side of the cross.

  626. We have seen and known and have read and

  627. have experienced a reality. This is why

  628. I constantly say that we are living in

  629. fulfilled prophecy.

  630. We don't talk a lot about prophecy in

  631. Baptist circles. The word sometimes

  632. scares us.

  633. But we operate in the prophetic in that

  634. we are living in fulfilled prophecy and

  635. we will continue to do so until the day

  636. Christ returns

  637. and the earthly and heavenly

  638. consummation take place and his kingdom

  639. is restored in its glory forever and

  640. ever. And if that's the reality of what

  641. we are aiming at, why would we stay

  642. silent? Why would we hide the light of

  643. the gospel? And so Isaiah

  644. in chapter 49:6,

  645. he will share this promise that God

  646. gives the people, the people of God. He

  647. says, "I will make you a light for the

  648. nations

  649. so that my salvation will be taken to

  650. the ends of the earth." Ain't that

  651. beautiful? that when you shine your

  652. light,

  653. when people see the transformation that

  654. has happened in your life because of

  655. Jesus Christ, your testimony, your

  656. story, how God has worked in you and how

  657. God is working through you, we take part

  658. in the kingdom of God moving forward and

  659. calling sinners to repentance,

  660. resurrecting people out of death and sin

  661. to light everlasting.

  662. Your faith should be impossible to hide.

  663. And here's here's for for me as a pastor

  664. who has been in ministry for 20 plus

  665. years. Here's what I find so troubling.

  666. Some Christians haven't outright

  667. abandoned Jesus,

  668. but they have put a basket over him.

  669. They're Christian at church, but their

  670. Christianity is hidden at work. They're

  671. Christian around believers, but it's

  672. hidden around another group of friends.

  673. or they're Christian on Sunday, but they

  674. hide it during the work week.

  675. And again, I want to go back to the

  676. context here. Jesus

  677. just told his followers that persecution

  678. is coming. Be mindful of that.

  679. And when persecution comes, we can get

  680. caught in the trap of allowing the fear

  681. in our lives to influence our decisions.

  682. And so when difficulties arise,

  683. when circumstances arise, and maybe it's

  684. not outright fear of persecution, maybe

  685. it's just fear of what others might

  686. think.

  687. Maybe it's fear of of things going bad.

  688. And so what do we do? Fear then

  689. influences us to grab the basket

  690. and to hide under it because we don't

  691. want to go public with our faith. We

  692. don't want to stand

  693. with Jesus.

  694. Jesus did not share his light with us.

  695. Remember in John's gospel, John 8:12, I

    John 8:12

  696. believe Jesus says, "I am the light of

  697. the world."

  698. Jesus doesn't share his light with us so

  699. that we can then blend in with the

  700. world. He shares his light with us so

  701. that we can shine it to a world in need.

  702. So your faith should be impossible to

  703. hide. Here's the last thing. Your faith

  704. should point to Jesus.

  705. It should point to Jesus. This is where

  706. we come full circle.

  707. I mentioned earlier, maybe you're

  708. hearing this and you're thinking, "Does

  709. Roland want me to stand on a soap box?

  710. Does he want me to be a street preacher?

  711. What does Roland want me to do?" I want

  712. your life to point to Jesus.

  713. How is your life pointing to Jesus?

  714. Verse 16.

  715. In the same way, Jesus says,

  716. "Let your light shine before others."

  717. Watch this.

  718. So that

  719. as a result of because of you not hiding

  720. your faith, you living differently, they

  721. may see your good works.

  722. Your good works.

  723. Not your idleness,

  724. not your silence, but your good works,

  725. visible good works. Ephesians chapter 2

    Ephesians 2:10

  726. verse 10, I am God's workmanship,

  727. created in Christ Jesus for the purpose

  728. of good works. When God created you,

  729. when he formed you and crafted you and

  730. gave you your gifts, gave you your good

  731. looks, gave you your character, when he

  732. gave everything about you and for you,

  733. he did so so that in your workmanship,

  734. in his workmanship, you would recognize

  735. that the work of your life should point

  736. back to him

  737. so that they may see your good works and

  738. give glory to your father who is in

  739. heaven.

  740. The life that we live should be visible

  741. evidence of transformation.

  742. Notice what Jesus is saying. He is

  743. saying, "Let them see me in you.

  744. Let them see a changed

  745. life." Now, here's where it gets tricky.

  746. Because if you're familiar with the

  747. Gospel of Matthew for the Bible nerds in

  748. the room in Ma one chapter later, what

  749. is Jesus going to say?

  750. He's going to say, "Don't let your

  751. righteous deeds be showcased in public.

  752. Keep them private."

  753. And if we are unschooled with the

  754. context, we might think, "Hey, these

  755. these are battling against one another."

  756. On one chapter Jesus says, "Be public."

  757. public. On another chapter, he says,

  758. "Keep your righteous deeds private."

  759. What's what's happening here? Here's

  760. what's happening.

  761. Jesus is telling us who gets the glory.

  762. And in the context of Matthew 6, he's

  763. saying, "Don't let your righteousness be

  764. public if your public righteousness is

  765. motivated by a glory for self."

  766. Let's not do that. But if it's motivated

  767. for a glory for the father,

  768. let that light shine.

  769. Take your salt and flavor and preserve

  770. the office,

  771. the stands on Friday nights,

  772. the cashier, the conversation, the

  773. checkout line, everything about your

  774. life. Live in such a way so that what

  775. you do glorifies

  776. God.

  777. Because here's the reality. I wrote a

  778. list because I don't want to miss these

  779. parts. Here's the truth. Your marriage

  780. points somewhere.

  781. Your generosity points somewhere. How

  782. you forgive points somewhere. How you're

  783. compassionate points somewhere. Your

  784. sexuality points somewhere. Your courage

  785. points somewhere. Your response to

  786. injustices and suffering points

  787. somewhere. Your social media posts point

  788. somewhere.

  789. Your internet history points somewhere.

  790. The profiles you follow on social media

  791. points somewhere. The group chat that

  792. you're in points somewhere. And the

  793. Christian life is supposed to function

  794. like a signpost and a huge blinking

  795. arrow that says Jesus.

  796. And does those things in your life do

  797. that?

  798. Maybe for some of us, we've been asking

  799. the wrong question.

  800. Maybe the question we've been asking is,

  801. "Do people know I'm a Christian?" And

  802. and that's noble. That that's

  803. praiseworthy.

  804. But I want to help and I want to

  805. challenge us clarify it a bit. Not just

  806. do people know I'm a Christian, but do

  807. people see Christ in me?

  808. Because there are so many people who

  809. claim Christ with their mouth,

  810. but it doesn't point people to Christ

  811. with their actions.

  812. Do people see Christ in you? Your faith

  813. was never meant to be private.

  814. It was meant to shine brightly to a

  815. world in need. Let's pray. Lord, we

  816. thank you for your word.

  817. We thank you for the opportunity to

  818. gather this morning.

  819. Lord, would you bless our remaining time

  820. here in just a moment as we worship you

  821. through song as we enter into a time of

  822. response?

  823. Lord, as you stir hearts

  824. to repent of sins, to cling to you as

  825. our only hope,

  826. I pray that their hearts would be

  827. softened

  828. and receptive to how you're moving and

  829. working. In Christ's name we pray. All

  830. God's people said, "Amen." Hey, let's

  831. stand together. We're going to close the

  832. service. We're going to sing. Let the

  833. words be your prayer. Not just words

  834. that you repeat, but words that you're

  835. praying. Our altar is going to be open.

  836. And this is an opportunity for you to

  837. respond.

  838. Maybe some of you, you'd like to respond

  839. in faith to Jesus because you've never

  840. placed your hope, faith, and trust in

  841. Jesus Christ.

  842. Maybe some of you, you'd like to respond

  843. in repentance because for far too long,

  844. you've just kept the gospel hidden for

  845. whatever reason.

  846. Or maybe this week will be your response

  847. as you choose to shine the light of

  848. Christ

  849. to those around you. This is an

  850. opportunity for you to have some

  851. one-on-one time with the Lord. I'll be

  852. available. I'd love to pray with you. If

  853. you'd love to come and have some time at

  854. the altar alone, this is for you. I love

  855. you, church.
