  1. Good morning. Good morning. Try it one more time

  2. for the mic. Good morning. Good morning. Love

  3. it. Good morning. My name is Scott. I've been

  4. here at the house for about five years. And from

  5. time to time, I get to share. And so I'm doing

  6. that this morning. And we're in a series on Matthew.

  7. So this morning I'm going to share from Matthew

  8. 6. First, I would like to hear a little bit about

  9. storage. Some places that folks have run out

  10. of storage. Anybody got a hand for me? Yes, okay.

  11. Your closet. What's your closet full of? Dirty

  12. clothes, she says. I love that honesty, yeah.

  13. Your closet also, now is it dirty clothes? Okay,

  14. so we got clothes, we got drums, we got Legos,

  15. and a new dresser. Mrs. McConnell, did I see

  16. you in the back? Okay, inflatables. And do they

  17. get used regularly? Oh, that's fantastic. That's

  18. fantastic. We'll have to drive by sometime. Yeah.

  19. Okay, okay and actually I'm gonna pause there

  20. because I was hoping that would come up. Storage,

  21. especially electronic storage. And I'll mention

  22. I'm doing a couple things different today. I've

  23. got a tray on my lap which is different. I'm

  24. using a laptop which is different from my notes

  25. and I've got my water here and I'm using a different

  26. mic. So if I may have some technical difficulties

  27. too, we'll see. Just some disclaimers. So let

  28. me grab my drink first, and then I'll tell you

  29. about my iPad storage. That's so great that you

  30. brought up phone storage. I love it. So this

  31. is an iPad Mini. I really like the iPad mini

  32. because it's mini, it's lighter, it's easier

  33. for me to pick up and move around. But I recently

  34. had to get a new one. Not because the camera's

  35. better, it's not. Not because the screen was

  36. damaged on my other one, it wasn't. But I have

  37. this habit of, I hate spending more money for

  38. a device that's the same device just because

  39. it has more storage. So I tend to buy the lower

  40. price one. But then what happens? I run out of

  41. storage. And this last time I ran out of storage

  42. so far, I couldn't get the update. And since

  43. I couldn't get the update, I was starting to

  44. have trouble using other things on my iPad. So

  45. I was doing this stuff that we often do, trying

  46. to delete pictures, trying to delete messages,

  47. taking apps off. then putting apps back on, these

  48. different things until finally I had to give

  49. in and I got a different iPad. Again, not because

  50. it's newer, not because it's nicer, I just was

  51. out of storage. Now, that's not the only place

  52. that we're not out of storage. In the physical

  53. spaces, We also have limited storage in our hearts

  54. and in our minds. Have you ever had something

  55. on your mind so much that there's just not much

  56. room for other stuff? It fills up. Sometimes

  57. our mind fills up with different types of challenges,

  58. different types of issues, different situations

  59. that we're in. And it can fill up to that place

  60. and get stuck in that place to where there's

  61. not room for much else. I would like to look

  62. at the passage for today and share a little bit

  63. more about that. In chapter six, verses 19 through

  64. 21 of the Gospel of Matthew, I'm gonna read that

  65. here in a moment. You can open it on your device.

  66. If you have enough storage to have the Bible

  67. app, you can look at it on your physical Bible.

  68. Do you ever feel, I've done this where I'm looking

  69. for space and I see like a devotional app or

  70. a Bible app and I feel bad deleting it, so I

  71. have space for something else so it stays. All

  72. right, let's see if we can pull the verses up.

  73. And hey, we got them. All right, it says, this

  74. is Jesus speaking to a group of people who'd

  75. gathered. Do not store up for yourselves treasures

  76. on earth where moths and vermin destroy and where

  77. thieves break in and steal. But store up for

  78. yourself treasures in heaven where moths and

  79. vermin do not destroy and where thieves do not

  80. break in and steal for where your treasure is.

  81. There your heart will be also. Now Jesus was

  82. speaking here first about physical things. His

  83. examples are about physical things. Moths had

  84. to do with clothes. And clothes, we might think

  85. of them today, you know, as just our t -shirts

  86. and our jeans. But some clothes then had a lot

  87. of additional value. To have something, I mean

  88. think about having something with dye in it.

  89. Having something that was a dye or special color

  90. was a very special thing. It had a lot of additional

  91. cost. So you didn't have as many clothing options

  92. and so having clothing was a high status thing

  93. and it held a lot of physical value. I'm going

  94. to tilt back some here because my blood pressure

  95. is giving me a hassle. Go into lazy boy mode.

  96. Now the vermin was about food. Storing up so

  97. much food, but rats, vermin can come in and eat

  98. that food. So if you put your security in your

  99. food, that's something else that could be taken.

  100. And then finally there were thieves and I thought

  101. this was a fun fact because their houses were

  102. made of clay and things similar to that a Thief

  103. would literally dig through the wall of your

  104. home to take your stuff So again this stuff can

  105. be taken if you put your value in that if you

  106. focus on that it can be lost Now Jesus talks

  107. about treasures in heaven What's he talking about?

  108. Is he talking about a bigger mansion? Is he talking

  109. about some kind of stuff that we can have in

  110. heaven? No, he's not. And we see that in different

  111. places, but I'll put it this way. Treasure and

  112. heaven are actions that match the values that

  113. Jesus taught. It's advancing his kingdom, expanding

  114. on what he taught. I'll go on a little bit further.

  115. What are the things that Jesus taught? I picked

  116. a few things. There's lots of them. Generosity,

  117. humility, justice, prayer, trust in God. These

  118. are the types of treasures that he directed people

  119. to pursue. Generosity, the way that that blesses

  120. others. Honesty, the way that that blesses others.

  121. last more than food, last more than clothes,

  122. last more than other valuable things that we

  123. have. But I want to go again back to our hearts

  124. and the things that we store there as well. Are

  125. the things that we're storing in our hearts that

  126. are taking up space, our emotions, those different

  127. places and things, are they full of worry? Are

  128. they full of fear? Are they full of concern about

  129. a situation? that doesn't need to be taking up

  130. that much space in our life. And I'll go further.

  131. I'll go back again to that update example that

  132. I used with my iPad. Those updates that we have

  133. on those devices give us new abilities. They

  134. make us aware of new things. They have security

  135. fixes to make us more secure. God wants to run

  136. updates on our hearts as well He wants there

  137. to be room for new things He wants to be able

  138. to teach us new things if our hearts if our minds

  139. are so full of other stuff Stuff that doesn't

  140. have that long value stuff that doesn't line

  141. up with the values that Jesus teaches We're not

  142. able to add that in. He's not able to bring that

  143. new stuff that he has into our lives so that

  144. we can grow, so that we can continue to advance.

  145. Following me so far? All right, good. Okay, now

  146. as we look through that. I'm going to look now

  147. to what Jesus taught, what he continued to go

  148. through, to let them know that we're cared for.

  149. Because how do we overcome those things in our

  150. hearts and our minds that start to take up so

  151. much space? A lot of times they're connected

  152. in one way or another to fear. Anger often is

  153. driven by a defensive response to something that's

  154. happened to us It's rooted in fear when we worry

  155. about having enough of things or What's going

  156. to happen next? It connects back to that fear

  157. of whether we're gonna have our needs met if

  158. something negative is going to repeat again Jesus

  159. gave some examples in this passage of how we

  160. are cared for. He told us to look at examples

  161. that are all around us. One is birds, and the

  162. other one is flowers. When we, Jesus says, and

  163. I'm gonna skip down, I'm gonna go down to a place

  164. in my notes, and this is from the message. So

  165. it's a little bit more a version of the Bible

  166. that focuses more on current language. Language

  167. we can understand and relate to more than literal

  168. from what's in from the Bible And I'm gonna read

  169. this now. It says this follows in that same chapter

  170. chapter 6 verses 25 through 34 in Matthew He

  171. said if you decide for God living a life of God

  172. worship It follows that you don't fuss about

  173. what's on the table at meal times or whether

  174. the clothes Your closet are in fashion There's

  175. more to your life than the food you put in your

  176. stomach More to your outer appearance in the

  177. clothes you hang on your body And I want you

  178. to hear this part look at the birds free and

  179. unfettered not tied down to a job description

  180. careless in the care of God and You count far

  181. more to him than birds If we can look around

  182. at the birds that are flying around us and know

  183. that they're cared for, that they have what they

  184. need, God cares about us so much more than that.

  185. Then Jesus goes on to say a little further down,

  186. walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers.

  187. They never print or shop, but have you seen every

  188. color and design quite like it? We can look around

  189. at nature again and see the designs that God

  190. has, how he cares, and know that we're cared

  191. for as well. I love this next part. This is Jesus

  192. speaking. What I'm trying to do here is to get

  193. you to relax. To not be so preoccupied with getting,

  194. so you can respond to God's giving. People who

  195. don't know God and the way he works fuss over

  196. these things, but you know both God and how he

  197. works. Steep your life in God reality, God initiative,

  198. God provisions. Don't worry about missing out.

  199. You'll find all your everyday human concerns

  200. will be met. Give your entire attention to what

  201. God is doing, right? now and don't get worked

  202. up about what may or may not happen tomorrow.

  203. God will help you deal with whatever hard things

  204. come up when the time comes. Now, uh, we'll see

  205. how this goes. I'm going to try. I'll start by

  206. reading that original passage in Spanish to the

  207. best of my ability. So we have some friends here

  208. today that speak Spanish. And I want to honor

  209. that. I think of that in Spanish somewhat because

  210. there's a name that I heard a lot this week,

  211. Felipe. He was Pastor Marissa's father and family

  212. to many others who are here today. And I think

  213. of this and I think of him when I think of this

  214. passage because I think about treasure on earth

  215. and treasure in heaven. I think of the stories

  216. that I heard from his family. that went on and

  217. on in his service this past week. There was a

  218. lot of room in his heart, in his mind, in his

  219. time for kingdom stuff, for treasure in heaven,

  220. for making time for those around him, and for

  221. showing love. There wasn't much talk. about earthly

  222. stuff, clothes that were worn, food that was

  223. eaten, any of those things. What was remembered

  224. was the love that was shown to family. And when

  225. I think of that and I think of treasure in heaven,

  226. it just reminds me that we need to keep space

  227. in our hearts, in our minds. Let God keep speaking

  228. to us and continue to show that love to those

  229. around us Now a lifetime is a big thing to focus

  230. on But it's important to remember that these

  231. things happen through moments and so I'm going

  232. to switch gears to some smaller moments, my neighbors.

  233. This past week, I had two boxes in my driveway,

  234. a 140 pound box and a 40 pound box. And I needed

  235. to get those moved into my garage. And so I called

  236. a neighbor and before I could even See my texts

  237. to know that they'd seen it the boxes were already

  238. in my garage They'd made space in their schedule

  239. and their time to come and care for a need My

  240. daughter has difficulty getting into my wife's

  241. van and She has some physical limitations and

  242. she also has a strong fear response to things

  243. that there's not really a good way to understand

  244. it, but there's just some things that cause a

  245. fear response. Once she went to get my wife's

  246. van, she would freeze and start to shake. She

  247. felt unstable. Someone in our church built a

  248. platform that goes around the seat and fits into

  249. our van exactly so that she can climb up and

  250. have the ability to take that extra step and

  251. feel safe. It took a lot of time. It took a lot

  252. of measuring. But that person made room for something

  253. that matters in the kingdom. So I want to ask

  254. this morning, what's maybe something that's clogging

  255. up storage in your heart? What's something that's

  256. taking up more space than you want it to? That

  257. might be making it difficult to recognize and

  258. show love to those in your immediate space. That

  259. might be stopping You from receiving those updates

  260. that God has for your heart and for your life

  261. New things fresh things I'd like you to take

  262. a moment at your table With those around you

  263. And we'll take about four minutes if you're willing

  264. to do that if you're open to it Not everyone

  265. needs to share at the table, but you can share

  266. something that's taking up space in your heart

  267. more than you want it to and something you'd

  268. like to have more space for in your heart. Keep

  269. it brief and it's more about just sharing something

  270. out loud than it is about telling your story,

  271. but I invite you to share that now and we'll

  272. give about four minutes. Be able to do that again

  273. something that might be taking up more space

  274. in your heart than you want it to And something

  275. you'd like to have more space for in your heart

  276. go ahead and share
