  1. (Transcribed by TurboScribe. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) How good is God, amen?

  2. Massive welcome to everyone this morning, also a

  3. massive welcome to everybody who is tuning in

  4. online from across the country, including our Mangatapiri

  5. Whangarei family.

  6. Everybody, why don't we turn around to the

  7. camera, say welcome, come on, welcome.

  8. You know this morning, just in worship, I

  9. was reminded of a story.

  10. This isn't the message yet, okay, but I

  11. was reminded of a story in Luke 24

  12. where Jesus had risen from the dead.

  13. We celebrated that last week, right?

  14. But there's this little gap in time where

  15. people are disillusioned, discouraged.

  16. Maybe they hadn't encountered the risen Jesus yet,

  17. and they're thinking, what is going on?

  18. And we find two who are on the

  19. road to Emmaus.

  20. And long story short, Jesus turns up, hangs

  21. out with them, He's talking with them, He's

  22. encouraging them.

  23. Then there's this moment where their eyes are

  24. opened to Jesus.

  25. And He disappears from their sight.

  26. But listen to this, verse 32, they asked

  27. each other, were not our hearts burning within

  28. us while He talked to us on the

  29. road and opened the scriptures to us?

  30. And this morning as we were praying, I

  31. think there's a theme this morning about God

  32. bringing His fire.

  33. Even in the car this morning as I

  34. was driving here, I was just listening to

  35. this worship song that was send your fire

  36. Lord.

  37. Now, we're going to go to the scriptures.

  38. I'm going to share what I feel God's

  39. been stirring on my heart, but I just

  40. want to set some expectation here that I

  41. believe that what God wants to do is

  42. He wants to send His fire and it's

  43. not a selfish thing.

  44. I love those moments more than anybody where

  45. you're in His presence and your heart just

  46. burns.

  47. But it's more than that.

  48. It's to burn, to be a witness, it's

  49. to burn with His fuel.

  50. And so whether you're watching online right now,

  51. whether you're in the room, let's take a

  52. moment.

  53. Let's take a moment.

  54. God, we ask that as you speak, Lord,

  55. as we open up the scriptures, Lord, would

  56. our hearts begin to burn like those two

  57. felt when they spent time with you.

  58. God, as we stand here in your presence

  59. this morning, Lord, whether it's in this room,

  60. whether it's in your dining room, your lounge,

  61. even if it's whilst you're commuting on a

  62. Wednesday morning, wherever you are, as this message

  63. hits you, Lord, would our hearts begin to

  64. burn as your presence is with us, Lord.

  65. Lord, would you set a fire in our

  66. hearts.

  67. So that I can't contain, that I can't

  68. control.

  69. I want more of you, God.

  70. I want more of you, God.

  71. Instead of fighting under my sword, that I

  72. can't contain, that I can't control.

  73. I want more of you, God.

  74. I want more of you, God.

  75. Set a fire down in my soul, that

  76. I can't contain, that I can't control.

  77. Cause I want more of you, God.

  78. Cause I want more of you, God.

  79. Instead of fighting under my sword, that I

  80. can't contain, that I can't control.

  81. I want more of you, God.

  82. I want more of you, God.

  83. Set a fire down in my soul, that

  84. I can't contain, that I can't control.

  85. I want more of you, God.

  86. I want more of you, God.

  87. It burns for you,

  88. and my heart, it

  89. burns, it burns for you, Lord.

  90. It burns for you,

  91. and my heart, it

  92. burns, it burns for you, Lord.

  93. Lord, would you begin to stir it up

  94. in our hearts this morning?

  95. Lord, would you send your fire?

  96. God, would you cause it to burn?

  97. It's an eternal flame, Lord.

  98. God, when it's fueled by your Spirit, it

  99. doesn't go out.

  100. God, we are hungry for more of you.

  101. Lord, we love the mountaintop experiences, but God,

  102. I thank you that there is a fire

  103. that burns, whether we're in the valley low

  104. or on the mountain high.

  105. God, would you set us ablaze with you

  106. this morning?

  107. God, would you begin to stir it up

  108. as we open up your Word?

  109. Would you speak to us?

  110. Would you open up our ears to hear,

  111. our hearts to receive?

  112. God, we are hungry for more.

  113. Come on, church, why don't you tell them

  114. in your own words that you're hungry for

  115. more?

  116. I can't be hungry enough for you.

  117. You've got to do it yourself.

  118. You've got to go, God, here I am.

  119. Here I am.

  120. Lord, I need you.

  121. I need you more than the air that

  122. I breathe.

  123. Come on, wherever you are online this morning,

  124. you've got to tell Him yourself.

  125. Come on, we're turning this into a prayer

  126. meeting this morning, where it's you and it's

  127. Him, and you're speaking to Him, and you're

  128. crying out to Him.

  129. Come on, church, stir it up.

  130. Even if it's just the words, here I

  131. am, God.

  132. Even if it's just the words, set me

  133. on fire, God.

  134. Even if it's just the words, Lord, would

  135. you speak to me?

  136. Even if it's just the words, Lord, it's

  137. been tough.

  138. I feel far, but here I am.

  139. Lord, speak this morning.

  140. Lord, stir it up, stir it up, stir

  141. it up.

  142. Would you stir it up?

  143. God, would you speak to us?

  144. In Jesus' name, and everybody said, amen.

  145. All right, as you take a seat this

  146. morning, why don't you say to the person

  147. next to you, get ready.

  148. It's just the beginning.

  149. This morning, the word that I feel God

  150. stirring up within me, we're going to title,

  151. it's just the beginning.

  152. It's just the beginning.

  153. Who enjoyed last week's service?

  154. Come on, I loved, we had so many

  155. great moments there.

  156. I loved, as David brought communion, and he

  157. talked about tete leste, anyone remember what that

  158. means?

  159. It is finished, paid in full.

  160. And what I love about Resurrection Sunday is

  161. that is our moment to celebrate the fact

  162. that it is finished, paid in full.

  163. But this week, I've been reflecting on the

  164. fact that there's a little bit of a

  165. tension there.

  166. I'm just going to start, just a little

  167. bit of water.

  168. There's a little bit of a tension there

  169. because I believe, and this is the word

  170. I think God wants to stir us up

  171. with this morning, that we think about salvation,

  172. we think about the fact that it is

  173. finished, we think about the fact that it's

  174. paid in full, and we view salvation like

  175. it's a finish line, okay?

  176. Like it's a finish line that we cross,

  177. and we throw our hands in the air,

  178. and we go, thank you, Jesus, yes!

  179. When salvation is actually the starting line.

  180. So I love, last week has to be

  181. one of my, it's my favourite Sunday of

  182. the year, okay?

  183. Resurrection Sunday, but I want to challenge us

  184. this morning, it's just the beginning.

  185. When we cross the line into salvation and

  186. our hands go in the air, it's actually

  187. the starting line, it's not the finishing line.

  188. And I don't know about you, but I

  189. think the way that we think about testimonies,

  190. that sort of thing, kind of reaffirms it,

  191. right?

  192. We love a great testimony where someone talks

  193. about the bumps and the turns, how God

  194. had brought them out of a destructive lifestyle,

  195. out of addictions, all of those things, and

  196. then we celebrate the moment of salvation.

  197. But can I challenge us this morning, that's

  198. just the beginning.

  199. That's just the beginning.

  200. So this morning, we're going to talk about

  201. what it is to be saved by grace.

  202. Everyone say, saved by grace.

  203. What it is to be shaped for more.

  204. And what it is to be sent with

  205. purpose.

  206. Sent with purpose.

  207. Come on.

  208. So if you're taking notes this morning, we're

  209. going to open up Ephesians.

  210. I love the book of Ephesians.

  211. It has to be one of my favourite

  212. books in the Bible.

  213. There's a lot here.

  214. We could spend weeks on this, but we've

  215. got moments, all right?

  216. We're going straight to chapter two, verses one,

  217. if you're taking notes.

  218. I want to encourage you, be a note

  219. taker.

  220. When I was a teenager, I was encouraged,

  221. pull out a notebook every week, write down

  222. what you're hearing, re-look at it, and

  223. I promise you, it will change your life.

  224. What does that look like now?

  225. I have a notes folder on my phone.

  226. I pull out my phone.

  227. I'm writing notes.

  228. I promise you, it will change your life.

  229. So we're going to Ephesians two, verses one.

  230. Listen to this.

  231. As for you, everyone say you.

  232. Not just the person next to you, you.

  233. Did you know we were all dead?

  234. Has anyone experienced that before?

  235. We were all dead.

  236. In fact, we might have thought we were

  237. making all of our own decisions, but there

  238. is a spirit that is working in those

  239. who are disobedient, and there is a kingdom

  240. of darkness.

  241. But listen to this.

  242. All of us also lived among them at

  243. one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful

  244. nature, following its desires, following its thoughts.

  245. Like the rest, we were, by nature, the

  246. objects of wrath.

  247. But listen to this.

  248. Everyone say but.

  249. Everyone say rich, not stingy.

  250. Even when we were dead in transgressions.

  251. It is by grace you are saved.

  252. I love this.

  253. We have been saved by grace.

  254. We were dead, then we've been made alive.

  255. That brought us to the what?

  256. The starting line is just the beginning.

  257. Saved from addiction, just the beginning.

  258. Saved from being discouraged, lost, you name it.

  259. Just the beginning.

  260. We've been made alive in Christ.

  261. I love verse six.

  262. And God raised us up with Christ and

  263. seated us with Him in the heavenly realms

  264. in Christ Jesus, in order that in the

  265. coming ages, He might show the incomparable riches

  266. of His grace expressed in His kindness to

  267. us in Christ Jesus.

  268. So we are not only saved, we're not

  269. only set free, we're not only come to

  270. the starting line, but as we begin this

  271. journey in Christ, we've been raised up with

  272. Him.

  273. So last week we celebrated Jesus risen from

  274. the dead.

  275. What happened next?

  276. He ascended, He is seated, He is ruling

  277. and He's reigning.

  278. And as we've sung about this morning, He

  279. is coming again.

  280. And what is true of that is also

  281. true for us right now that we have

  282. been raised up with Christ.

  283. So because we're in Christ, we also have

  284. access to the same freedom, the same shared

  285. victory as we begin what lays ahead.

  286. Church, we haven't reached the finishing line yet.

  287. We're just getting started.

  288. It's just the beginning.

  289. Then Paul summarises it really easy if we

  290. didn't get it.

  291. Verse eight.

  292. For it is by grace you have been

  293. saved through faith.

  294. This is not from ourselves, it's the gift

  295. of God.

  296. Not by works so that no one can

  297. boast.

  298. Every single one of us could not earn

  299. it.

  300. Amen.

  301. Hallelujah.

  302. Aren't you glad that there is a free

  303. gift of grace this morning?

  304. Just the beginning.

  305. And here's the challenge.

  306. God doesn't just save you, just doesn't forgive

  307. your sins, past, present, future.

  308. He is working in you because He wants

  309. to send you, okay?

  310. So everyone say, shaped for more.

  311. Next verse.

  312. Verse 10.

  313. For we are God's workmanship created in Christ

  314. Jesus.

  315. So there's a moment when we're dead.

  316. Jesus meets us where we are.

  317. We are forgiven.

  318. We are set free.

  319. We are paid in full, debts wiped.

  320. We begin the journey but then He begins

  321. to work on us, begins to work in

  322. us.

  323. He begins to shape us.

  324. We are His workmanship.

  325. Now Paul, he is in a city, he's

  326. writing to a city, sorry, called Ephesus, all

  327. right?

  328. He'd spent three years there himself and I

  329. believe he would have been inspired by what

  330. he saw around him, okay?

  331. So when he was in Ephesus, he would

  332. work as a tent maker and then he

  333. would go and he would teach.

  334. And within this city, they had one of

  335. the seven wonders of the world.

  336. People would have seen this, the Temple of

  337. Artemis and they would have been like, this

  338. is amazing.

  339. Look at the workmanship.

  340. Look at the statues, the sculptures, this place.

  341. They also had the Library of Celsus which

  342. was one of the largest libraries in ancient

  343. time filled with scrolls, filled with works of

  344. literary art, okay?

  345. They would have been inspired.

  346. He would have been inspired to write that

  347. we ourselves are actually the workmanship of God.

  348. We are the workmanship of God.

  349. Here's something I know about art.

  350. There's a process, there's editing.

  351. Any writers out here?

  352. Anyone?

  353. There's editing.

  354. You don't just kind of throw out a

  355. first draft and there you are.

  356. There's work done there.

  357. Like sculptures, there's chipping away at the marble.

  358. It starts off with a big block, right?

  359. And then they chip away and chip away

  360. and it's incredible what gets revealed with a

  361. master craftsman working on a block of marble.

  362. And Church, I want to inspire you this

  363. morning with this thought.

  364. We have the master creator working on us.

  365. So we might get saved and you might

  366. go, you know what, I'm far from somebody

  367. that God could use.

  368. Rest in the knowledge that the master craftsman

  369. is working on you.

  370. He's editing away, he's chipping away.

  371. We are his workmanship.

  372. None of us are some knockoff, none of

  373. us are some secondary level artwork and some

  374. others are like, you know, that's the piece

  375. that God's going to throw in his gallery.

  376. We all make it into God's gallery, okay?

  377. We are his workmanship.

  378. So I want you to not be discouraged

  379. in this moment.

  380. Revelation tells us that he is the alpha

  381. and the omega.

  382. He is the beginning, the end.

  383. He knows the end from the beginning.

  384. Can you trust him that as you begin

  385. the journey that he knows what he's doing

  386. when he's working in you?

  387. Hebrews tells us that he is the author

  388. and perfecter of our faith.

  389. Can you trust him this morning that as

  390. we begin to talk about what it looks

  391. like to go and to be sent that

  392. he knows what he's doing when he's editing

  393. your life and working on you?

  394. I love Paul's prayer.

  395. We find it in chapter three because he

  396. doesn't pray that the Ephesians are taken out

  397. of their challenges or any of those change

  398. for them.

  399. But listen to this, he says, I pray

  400. that out of his glorious riches, everyone say

  401. his glorious riches, this is not out of

  402. what we have, this is out of God,

  403. that he may strengthen you with power through

  404. his spirit and your inner being.

  405. Do you know that why God is working

  406. on you, why he's shaping you, his heart

  407. is that you would be filled with the

  408. power of his spirit.

  409. This starting line in this journey that we

  410. go off on is not something that we

  411. are called to do in our own strength,

  412. it is to be fueled by his spirit.

  413. And why does he pray that we'd be

  414. strengthened with the power through his spirit and

  415. inner being?

  416. Verse 17, so that Christ may dwell in

  417. your hearts through faith.

  418. And I love this.

  419. And I pray that you being rooted and

  420. established in love, how good are those words?

  421. Our theme at the moment is called planted,

  422. being rooted.

  423. As he's working on us, he is causing

  424. our roots to go so deep.

  425. So there's strength there, but we're also drawing

  426. in strength and sustenance, just like deep roots.

  427. But also established, that's like a word that

  428. makes me think of like a foundation for

  429. a big building.

  430. Come on, who's feeling deeply rooted and established?

  431. Anybody out there?

  432. Well, my prayer is we all feel that

  433. at the end.

  434. Listen, he's praying that we'd be like this,

  435. that we may have power together.

  436. Everyone say together.

  437. With all of the saints to grasp how

  438. wide and long and high and deep is

  439. the love of Christ.

  440. And to know this love that surpasses knowledge

  441. that you may be filled.

  442. Everyone say filled.

  443. To the measure of all of the fullness

  444. of God.

  445. So when I hear that end bit, trust

  446. me, okay, I'm going to take you on

  447. a little journey and you'll see where we're

  448. heading with this.

  449. When I think about the love of God,

  450. I think about it in the sense of

  451. how wide that God's love impacts every part

  452. of our life, okay?

  453. Not just Sunday, not just our walk with

  454. him, but my relationship with my wife, my

  455. relationship with my kids, my work, my friends.

  456. It's the width of my life, okay?

  457. The love of God being the length, how

  458. long is the length of my life?

  459. I feel absolutely blessed that I've known God

  460. for many, many years.

  461. He's been with me through it all, the

  462. length.

  463. Anyone else thankful for that, that there's length?

  464. It's not just, remember, it's not just getting

  465. to a finish line, it's the starting line.

  466. He wants to be with you.

  467. The heights, anyone had like total highs in

  468. your life where you're celebrating, like things are

  469. going well in your business, in your family,

  470. like child being born, whatever that looks like.

  471. But not just that, the depths.

  472. There are moments in our life where, like

  473. I think of when my mum died, that

  474. is a depth moment.

  475. But God's love can reach even there.

  476. So, I myself can experience and understand that

  477. God wants to love and be involved in

  478. every area of my life, in the length

  479. of my life, in the high moments.

  480. You know, I think of when I got

  481. healed of asthma, that was a high moment,

  482. thank you, Jesus.

  483. The depth moments, the struggles, the things, like

  484. as I said, like even my mum dying,

  485. that's a deep moment where you go, God,

  486. I need you in this moment.

  487. I can understand God's love in that, but

  488. listen to this, together with all of the

  489. saints.

  490. I know when I speak with some of

  491. you, you guys have been through some really

  492. tough things in your life that I have

  493. never experienced.

  494. That shows me how wide, even wider than

  495. my own understanding, the love of God can

  496. go.

  497. I remember chatting to, and I was reminded,

  498. we had Pam's party last night, great celebrating,

  499. Pam.

  500. 80, what a good number.

  501. But I still remember talking with Pam's late

  502. husband, Owen, one day, and he was telling

  503. me, Jesse, trust me, God is faithful, time

  504. after time after time.

  505. I remember him telling me story after story

  506. after story after story, and what's beautiful about

  507. that is because he was so much older

  508. than me, he was demonstrating to me that

  509. the love of God goes even further than

  510. I understand in length.

  511. Man, when I celebrate with somebody who is

  512. just on a mountain high, it just shows

  513. me how often God just wants to meet

  514. you in those high moments.

  515. When I meet with people who have been

  516. to the utter depths that makes maybe the

  517. things I've gone through seem like nothing, it

  518. shows me how far, how deep the love

  519. of God goes.

  520. Why is it important that Paul prays that

  521. together we would understand that?

  522. It's so that we would know and understand

  523. so that we would be filled to the

  524. measure of all of the fullness of God.

  525. I understand that God can break any addiction.

  526. I understand that God can heal any disease.

  527. I understand that God can do infinitely more

  528. than we can hope or imagine as we

  529. share with each other the love of God.

  530. I understand that it doesn't matter what depths

  531. or how far or how long my life

  532. as God is gonna always be faithful.

  533. God is always gonna be faithful.

  534. Why is that important?

  535. Because we are to be sent with purpose.

  536. And we wanna be sent being filled with

  537. all the fullness of God because we're not

  538. just God's workmanship.

  539. It goes on to say not just created

  540. in Christ Jesus but to do the good

  541. works which God has prepared in advance for

  542. us to do.

  543. For every single one of us, God has

  544. got things lined up on this race.

  545. Remember, we don't just get saved.

  546. We're not just going, cool, it's a finishing

  547. line.

  548. It's a starting line.

  549. It's not just running in our own strength.

  550. God is building within us because we're sent

  551. with purpose these things for us to do.

  552. And it's important to note we're not just

  553. saved by but we're saved for.

  554. Most of the time these things are gonna

  555. not look like a platform, okay?

  556. It's not gonna look like Sunday on a

  557. stage.

  558. It's not gonna look like social media and

  559. putting out a post.

  560. It's gonna look like Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,

  561. Friday, Saturday.

  562. It's gonna look like conversations in your workplaces.

  563. It's gonna look like conversations around the dinner

  564. table.

  565. It's gonna look like moments out in the

  566. street the good things which God has prepared

  567. in advance for us to do.

  568. What I love about Paul is, as we

  569. read in Acts 19, where it talks about

  570. his time in Ephesus, he was working and

  571. he was ministering.

  572. So I wanna challenge this morning.

  573. You might be thinking, well, my race really

  574. starts when I go into full-time ministry.

  575. Guess what?

  576. We are all in full-time ministry.

  577. Sure, some people are called within the church

  578. and to equip and those sort of things,

  579. but we are all called to do the

  580. good works which God has prepared.

  581. Like Paul, it often looks like in the

  582. workplace as well as those moments when we

  583. meet together.

  584. So I wanna bust the myth this morning

  585. that's saying, that thought that it might be

  586. vocation versus calling.

  587. I'm waiting until the church is paying me

  588. to, I'm in ministry.

  589. No, there's no, we have work and we

  590. have calling.

  591. It's all one thing.

  592. It's all one thing.

  593. Case in point, I remember when I was

  594. 19, I used to work at Hellenstein's, okay?

  595. Do I think I was called to work

  596. at Hellenstein's?

  597. Was that my calling?

  598. No.

  599. But it got me money.

  600. I remember one day being in Hellenstein's and

  601. my manager was sick as, okay?

  602. And she said, I'm gonna have to hang

  603. out out the back for a bit.

  604. I'm just not feeling well.

  605. And there's a few of us on the

  606. floor.

  607. And I had a moment of inspiration where

  608. I feel like the Holy Spirit was stirring

  609. and I said to the person I was

  610. working with out there, hey, do you mind

  611. if I just go out the back for

  612. a sec and just check on my manager?

  613. And they're like, sure.

  614. Because that's the good thing to do, right?

  615. Don't just leave the floor empty.

  616. So I went out the back and I

  617. was like, how are you going?

  618. And she said, I've just got a whole

  619. lot of pain.

  620. She was actually laying on the ground.

  621. I'm just gonna lay here for a bit,

  622. see how it goes.

  623. And I was 19.

  624. I just said to her, hey, can I

  625. pray for you?

  626. I believe in the power of prayer.

  627. Can I pray for you?

  628. She said, yes.

  629. Can I tell you this?

  630. I've only had two people in my life

  631. ever say no.

  632. Often in our heads, we're like, oh my

  633. gosh, how do we think this is gonna

  634. go?

  635. I've only ever had two people in my

  636. life say no.

  637. One was a Jehovah Witness.

  638. I've even had an atheist say yes, okay?
