  1. I thought this morning that I would do kind of

  2. a recap of where we've been. And the reason for

  3. that is because it is essential that you all

  4. understand where we've been, what we've talked

  5. about. So we began in the beginning with a look

  6. at The family. We looked at Genesis. And so I

  7. want to read this morning as we go through this

  8. time. I've mentioned all these verses before.

  9. I went through my notes. And I don't think there's

  10. any new verses that we're going to look at this

  11. morning. So you've heard all of these things

  12. before. But I want them to be, again, put in

  13. your minds that these are not just some ideas

  14. that I have. that I think we're good, that, man,

  15. if we could just implement these ideas that I

  16. have, boy, we'd be doing well. But that's not

  17. it, right? The idea is these are instructions

  18. from the Lord. These are the principles that

  19. he's given us, and they're in the Word. They're

  20. not my ideas. So we began in the very beginning

  21. there. We looked in Genesis. I'm going to read

  22. them, so you don't have to turn. If you just

  23. want to listen, that'd be great. So in Genesis

    Genesis 2:18

  24. chapter 2, verse 18, it says, Then the Lord God

  25. said, It is not good for the man to be alone.

  26. I will make him a helper suitable for him. Out

  27. of the ground the Lord God formed every beast

  28. of the field and every bird of the sky and brought

  29. them to the man to see what he would call them.

  30. And whatever the man called the living creature,

  31. that was its name. The man gave names to all

  32. the cattle, to the birds of the sky, and to every

  33. beast of the field, but for Adam there was not

  34. found a helper suitable for him. So the Lord

  35. God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man,

  36. and he slept. Then he took one of his ribs and

  37. closed up the flesh at that place. The Lord God

  38. fashioned into a woman the rib which he had taken

  39. from the man and brought her to the man. The

  40. man said, This is now bone of my bone and flesh

  41. of my flesh. She shall be called woman, because

  42. she was taken out of man. And for this reason

  43. a man shall leave his father and mother and be

  44. joined to his wife, and they shall become one

  45. flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked

  46. and were not ashamed. So we see there just the

  47. establishment there of this family in the very

  48. beginning. Paul then. We'll read it again. Paul

  49. brings it up. He affirms these same things. You

  50. know this is nothing. Nothing has changed. From

  51. the very beginning there. To Paul's day. Paul

  52. saying. This is still true. So in Ephesians 5.

  53. He's giving instruction. He says. Wives be subject

  54. to your husbands. As to the Lord. For the husband

  55. is the head of the wife. As Christ is the head

  56. of the church, he himself being the Savior of

  57. the body. But as the church is subject to Christ,

  58. so also the wives ought to be to their husbands

  59. and everything. Husbands, love your wives just

  60. as Christ loved the church and gave himself up

  61. for her, so that he might sanctify her, having

  62. cleansed her by the washing of water with the

  63. word, that he might present to himself the church

  64. in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or

  65. any such thing, but that she would be holy and

  66. blameless. So husbands ought also to love their

  67. own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his

  68. own wife loves himself. For no one ever hated

  69. his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it,

  70. just as Christ also does the church, because

  71. we are members of his body. For this reason a

  72. man shall leave his father and mother, and shall

  73. be joined to his wife, and the two shall become

  74. one flesh. This mystery is great, but I am speaking

  75. with reference to Christ and the church. Nevertheless,

  76. each individual among you also is to love his

  77. own wife, even as himself, and the wife must

  78. see to it that she respects her husband. So Paul

  79. there refers back to Genesis when he's giving

  80. instruction here for husbands and wives, saying

  81. this is how it was back then, this is how it

  82. is today. It hasn't changed. I want us to understand,

  83. and I've said this, i've said this before we're

  84. not talking here about lesser people husbands

  85. and wives there's not there's not you know the

  86. husband is the authority he's the head he was

  87. created first and then you've got this subservient

  88. woman who was just brought along no the lord

  89. god created woman for what purpose because man

  90. needed something he needed a helper and we've

  91. we've said this before So when we deal with leadership,

  92. when we deal with authority in the home, when

  93. we say that there's an authoritative structure

  94. in the home, that the man is the head of the

  95. home, that he is the leader, it's not that the

  96. wife is lesser, right? She's not less than. She

  97. was designed and created for a specific purpose,

  98. just as the man was. And when we fulfill the

  99. roles that God has put us in, we're content,

  100. we're blessed, we're happy, and we glorify God

  101. in those things. So make sure we understand that.

  102. So when we go through here and review these things,

  103. when we think about these things, we're not talking

  104. lesser, woman lesser than man. No, that's not

  105. it at all. We're talking equality, both. Created

  106. in the image of God, right? That's what Genesis

  107. tells us. So, I want to stress, however, the

  108. importance here of this authority structure.

  109. I think I have. And so maybe you think I'm just

  110. beating a dead horse. And that's fine. Hear me

  111. once more then. It is imperative that we understand

  112. this as men. We are to be the authority in our

  113. homes. We are leaders. We are the heads of our

  114. homes, just as Christ is the head of the church.

  115. We are the head. I didn't say it. God said it.

  116. We need to accept that. We need to put that into

  117. practice. Why is it so important? Do you guys

  118. understand how messed up, the world is today

  119. because of this one fact. If this was the only

  120. issue we had in the world, the world would be

  121. a lot like it is today. You men, you young men,

  122. you young married men, and you young men who

  123. are not married yet, and you older men, this

  124. applies to each and every one of us. When we

  125. fail to lead our homes, when we fail to be the

  126. authority in our homes, it brings nothing but

  127. catastrophe. You may think, you know, everything's

  128. fine. We're getting along. You know, yeah, maybe

  129. I'm not leading in the way that I should, but

  130. things are good. We have a good relationship.

  131. Maybe so right now. Maybe so. But what's the

  132. effect going to be upon your children? What's

  133. the effect going to be upon your marriage as

  134. you progress? I don't say these things because

  135. I'm just thinking it could be bad. I know countless

  136. marriages where the man refused to leave and

  137. their lives were in shambles. They're still married

  138. and they're going on, but they're not happy.

  139. Their children are confused. Their children,

  140. the boys then that are raised up into men, they're

  141. not really men. They're following their wives

  142. now because they've not had an example of a godly

  143. man leading his home. Mom always made the decisions.

  144. And now you have the same thing going on in their

  145. homes. You men are to set an example. Of this

  146. in your homes. Leading. Being an authority. It's

  147. imperative. It is imperative. One way. That I'm

  148. always reminded. Again. A number of folks that

  149. I know. This isn't always the case. And so. I

  150. hope we all understand. There's exceptions to

  151. everything. We all understand that. as far as

  152. personalities and things. But generally speaking,

  153. wives are more emotional than their husbands.

  154. That's just the way it is. Again, it may not

  155. always be that way with every single relationship,

  156. but in general, that is how it is. How many times

  157. do we see, have I seen in a relationship, the

  158. wife leading, and how is she leading? Based on

  159. her emotions. Everything is a huge ordeal because

  160. her emotions are not in check. It's constant

  161. turmoil. And the husband just stands idly by

  162. like, there's nothing I can do about it. What

  163. am I supposed to do? This is just how it is.

  164. They're children. There's no stability there.

  165. It's a dreadful situation. I want to stress that

  166. it may be fine now. You may think our relationship

  167. is good as things are. It will not always be

  168. that way. So you have that, right? We don't want

  169. that. But more importantly than that, what else

  170. can we say? You're in sin. Right? That's the

  171. real issue. You have... Said God's way is okay

  172. and good for some. But I know better in my own

  173. life. And this is how it's going to be. You have

  174. set yourself up as the authority. Rather than

  175. God and his word. And you're in sin. That's the

  176. major issue. Not only are you sinning against

  177. God. You're sinning against your wife. You're

  178. sinning against your children. You're sinning.

  179. Against all around you. As you set this terrible

  180. example of what leadership is supposed to be.

  181. And so I'm trying to stress to you men. The importance

  182. of this. This is not my thought or my opinion.

  183. This is God's clear instruction for you. To be

  184. leaders in your home. This is love. Do you want

  185. to love your wife? Then you better lead her.

  186. That's all there is to it. If you love, you will

  187. lead. You will lead in love. We're not talking

  188. here about authority or love. One or the other.

  189. No. It is love to lead in your home. That is

  190. the most loving thing you can do for your wife.

  191. The other thing that I want to stress once more

  192. is the impact of the family upon the church.

  193. I mentioned this when we talked about family.

  194. As the family goes, so goes the church, so goes

  195. society. I think I said something along those

  196. lines. You set an example in your home of leadership

  197. and submission. That plays out in the church.

  198. That plays out in the church. If there's no submission

  199. in the home, why do we think there's going to

  200. be any type of submission in the church? Why

  201. would we think that? It's illogical and it's

  202. unreasonable. And so that's how it plays out

  203. in the church. Problems in the church often are

  204. a result of problems in the home. A man is not

  205. led properly. And again, I've seen this time

  206. and again. The man is not led properly. He's

  207. been led by the wife. Next thing you know, there's

  208. all sorts of problems in the church. It is imperative

  209. for the health of the family and for the health

  210. of the church that men lead in their homes. Leading

  211. in love. Leading according to the word of God.

  212. Again, who is our example? Christ. Did Christ

  213. do anything mean to the bride? No, he saved the

  214. bride. He laid his life down for the bride. That's

  215. how we lead. Doing what is necessary, not necessarily

  216. what is fun, what is easy. Was it easy for Christ

  217. upon this earth? No, it was not. But He did what

  218. needed to be done in submission to His Father.

  219. Lead in your homes. It is imperative. We talked

  220. about biblical manhood. We talked about the results

  221. of the curse and the roles that men and women

  222. play, or that men and women have, that they are

  223. different. We talked about how Adam was cursed

  224. in his role. He was cursed in his work. Eve was

  225. cursed in her role of submission and childbearing.

  226. And so all that went on with that, again, if

  227. we could read that. In Genesis 3, 16 through

  228. 19. To the woman he said, I will greatly multiply

  229. your pain and childbirth and pain. You will bring

  230. forth children, yet your desire will be for your

  231. husband and he will rule over you. Then to Adam

  232. he said, because you have listened to the voice

  233. of your wife and have eaten from the tree about

  234. which I commanded you, saying, You shall not

  235. eat from it. Cursed is the ground because of

  236. you. In toil you will eat of it all the day of

  237. your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall

  238. grow for you and you will eat plants of the field.

  239. By the sweat of your face you will eat bread

  240. till you return to the ground because from it

  241. you are taken. For you are dust and to dust you

  242. shall return. We didn't even mention the whole

  243. issue right there, right? Of listening to the

  244. voice of his wife rather than the voice of God.

  245. Catastrophe came afterwards. He didn't lead.

  246. And it's the same today. So, it's imperative.

  247. It's imperative. Men, be men. All those things

  248. that we talked about as far as what it is to

  249. be a godly man. Taking dominion, responsibility.

  250. All of those things are essential. The whole

  251. idea of leading your family, what was the first

  252. thing we said you've got to do if you're going

  253. to lead your family? If you're going to be a

  254. leader and authority in your home, what are you

  255. going to do? You've got to lead yourself. You

  256. have got to take care of yourself. You've got

  257. to be responsible. You've got to be in the word.

  258. You've got to be doing certain things. You need

  259. to be a man of God. I'll read this passage. 2

  260. Timothy 3 .16 I'm sure it's familiar. 2 Timothy

  261. 3 .16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable

  262. for teaching, reproof, correction, and training

  263. in righteousness, so the man of God may be adequate,

  264. equipped for every good work. You've got to be

  265. in the Word. You've got to know the Word. It

  266. will equip you. It will correct you, instruct

  267. you, and lead you in the way that you should

  268. go. You've got to be that if you're going to

  269. be a man of God and a leader in your home. You've

  270. got to be faithful. You've got to be wise. You've

  271. got to be submitted to God, devoted to His Word.

  272. All of those things are necessary and essential

  273. as men. If we're to lead our homes. Husbands.

  274. We already read. Ephesians 5. 22 and 25. Again.

  275. Very clear instruction there. As the head. Another

  276. couple verses here. 1 Timothy 3. Again, I'm just

  277. going to read these. These are instructions to

  278. elders and to deacons. 3, 4, 1 Timothy 3, 4.

  279. He must be one who manages his own household

  280. well, keeping his children under control with

  281. all dignity. But if he does not know how to manage

  282. his own house, how will he take care of the church?

  283. And then in verse 12, it's very similar. Deacons

  284. must be husbands of one wife. good managers of

  285. their children and their households. I bring

  286. those up to say, these aren't special things

  287. that only the elders and deacons are doing. The

  288. elders and deacons are doing these things, but

  289. everybody in the church should be doing them.

  290. If you're not, then you're not qualified. But

  291. this isn't just one thing here that the elders

  292. and deacons are doing, oh, they're managing their

  293. house well. No. Every man in the church ought

  294. to be doing it. So, again, it's imperative. It

  295. is important. We talked about leading as a prophet,

  296. priest, and king. We're going to give those booklets

  297. out from Joel Beeky on leading your home, leading

  298. in the home. We want you to read them. I think

  299. I should have brought them today. I meant to

  300. bring them. We will bring those and give them

  301. out. It's imperative that you read that. Again,

  302. glean some help and instruction from that book.

  303. It's very good. Husbands, leading your wives.

  304. Leading in the home. It's important. It's imperative.

  305. It is necessary. We did talk a little bit just

  306. about making decisions. So that's one way that

  307. we lead is we make these decisions, right? If

  308. you're going to lead in your home, you are going

  309. to begin the conversation on what needs to be

  310. done, how we're going to do it. And again, it's

  311. a conversation. It's not just, hey, this is what

  312. we're doing. It's, hey, honey, here's what I

  313. think we need to be doing. What do you think?

  314. Are you on board with this? Have you got a bit

  315. of wisdom in implementing this? What have you

  316. got to say here? and you are both in agreement,

  317. you help, and then what? You as the husband,

  318. moving forward, implementing those things. Or

  319. maybe she says, no, I don't want to do that.

  320. Then what do you do? Well, this is what we're

  321. doing. I am leading. This is important. This

  322. is what should be done. I think this is biblical.

  323. This is how we're going. We're moving forward.

  324. Leading. And wives, what is your responsibility

  325. then? To submit to that. As unto the Lord. Right?

  326. Is it easy? No. Maybe not. But that's what's

  327. necessary. So men, lead. Lead in decision making.

  328. Lead in your homes. Alright. We talked about

  329. fathers. Ephesians. Ephesians 6 .4 we mentioned.

  330. Just very briefly, I think. Just two weeks worth.

  331. Ephesians 6 .4 Fathers, do not provoke your children

  332. to anger, but bring them up in the discipline

  333. and instruction of the Lord. Okay, so we talked

  334. about this bring them up is to nurture them.

  335. I think if you've got the King James, I think

  336. it might say that. So bringing them up is this

  337. idea of nurturing. It's the same thing. Bringing

  338. them up to maturity in the discipline and instruction,

  339. the discipline, the whole training, the whole

  340. rearing of your children, everything from instruction

  341. to correction, reproof, spanking, all that's

  342. included there. And so we talked about all that.

  343. But I want to emphasize once more here the importance

  344. of instruction. Alright? You fathers are to instruct

  345. your children. You are to teach them. And so

  346. I just ran through the Proverbs this morning.

  347. Was that this morning or yesterday? Either way.

  348. At some point. I just want to read a few verses

  349. here. Proverbs 1 .8 Hear my son your father's

  350. instruction and do not forsake your mother's

  351. teaching. Are you giving instruction? Is your

  352. son able to hear what you're saying? Or are you

  353. silent? Are you silent in the home? Proverbs

  354. 1 .8 Proverbs 1 .10 My son If sinners entice

  355. you, do not consent. He's instructing there,

  356. right? Don't go after these guys. Don't follow

  357. in their ways. Proverbs 2 .1 My son, if you will

  358. receive my words and treasure my commandments

  359. within you, make your ear attentive to wisdom,

  360. incline your heart to understanding, and so on.

  361. He goes on there. But what's he saying? If you

  362. will receive my words and my commandments. He's

  363. instructing him. He's teaching him. Here's what

  364. you should do. Here's what you should not do.

  365. 3 .1. My son, do not forget my teaching, but

  366. let your heart keep my commandment. Teaching.

  367. It's everywhere. It's constant. He's teaching

  368. here. It's imperative. It's constant. It's daily.

  369. It's in every situation that we mentioned that.

  370. There's always opportunity for instruction. Proverbs

  371. 4 .1 Hear, O sons, the instruction of a father

  372. and give attention that you may gain understanding.

  373. For I give you sound teaching. Do not abandon

  374. my instruction. More instruction. You got the

  375. picture. One more I will read here. Proverbs

  376. 5, 1. My son, give attention to my wisdom. Incline

  377. your ear to my understanding. Here's the question

  378. for you. You men, you young men in particular,

  379. do you have wisdom? I'm seriously asking. You

  380. don't have to answer out loud here. But I'm seriously

  381. asking the question. Are you wise? Do you have

  382. wisdom? Do you have wisdom to impart to your

  383. children? If you don't. You better get in the

  384. word. You better find some. Because you can't

  385. instruct. You can't command. You can't lead and

  386. guide if you don't have some. You've got to have

  387. wisdom, and you only find it in the Word. Get

  388. it. There's all sorts of encouragements to wisdom

  389. all throughout Proverbs. It's wonderful. It's

  390. to be had. James, if any man lack wisdom, what's

  391. he supposed to do? Ask. Ask. Ask, seek, knock,

  392. and it will be given unto you. That's the promise

  393. to believers. Okay? Seek it. Find it. Get it.

  394. So, instructing our children. Taking responsibility

  395. for every aspect of our children's development,

  396. we said. Physical, emotional, spiritual, social.

  397. All of those things are our responsibilities

  398. as fathers. And then we talked about relationship

  399. with our children. I don't think I said this.

  400. I found it in my notes the other day. But relationship

  401. with our children. We talked about God as our

  402. Father and our relationship with God. And that,

  403. again, is our example in our relationship with

  404. our children. What's the first relationship when

  405. you come together as a family? Apart from your

  406. relationship with God, it's your wife, right?

  407. If you are developing a relationship with your

  408. wife, it naturally comes that you're going to

  409. have a relationship with your children. Because

  410. all of those things you're doing with your wife,

  411. the time that you spend together, the talking,

  412. what happens? The games that you play? All of

  413. a sudden you've got this little rugrat running

  414. around there. What's he doing? He's sitting there

  415. listening to the conversations. He's sitting

  416. there while you're playing games. He's there

  417. when you're spending time together. And next

  418. thing you know, he's just part of it, right?

  419. He's just right there with you. You start playing

  420. these games that he can play. You're doing things

  421. that he enjoys as well. But he's also involved

  422. in all of it. And so it begins with your wife.

  423. You're developing, nurturing this relationship

  424. with your wife and then your kids come along

  425. and it just continues. So you men, just because

  426. you're married doesn't mean now all of a sudden

  427. you can neglect your wife. You have to still

  428. maintain that relationship. It should grow. It

  429. should flourish. Each day should be better. You

  430. should want to spend more time with your wife.

  431. When I saw a t -shirt, my favorite day is the

  432. day spent with you. Today is my favorite day.

  433. Something like that we saw at the shop the other

  434. day. But that's true. Each day should be your

  435. new favorite day that you're spending with your

  436. wife. Because it should just be that much more

  437. that you know her and enjoy her. Again, it was

  438. a corny shirt. It was funny. Okay, developing

  439. relationship. And then we talked about discipline.

  440. And so I want to read these, the spanking of

  441. our children. I'm going to read through these

  442. again because these are important. Again, this

  443. is not my idea that we're going to be spanking

  444. our children. This is God's Word giving clear

  445. instruction to parents. Proverbs 13, 24. He who

  446. withholds his rod hates his son, but he who loves

  447. him disciplines him diligently. Again, we talked

  448. about that. Love and hate. If you hate him, you're

  449. just going to let him go his own way. You're

  450. not going to spank him. You're not going to discipline

  451. him. Proverbs 19, 18. Discipline your son while

  452. there is hope, and do not desire his death. Proverbs

  453. 22 .6 Train up a child in the way he should go.

  454. Even when he is old, he will not depart from

  455. it. 22 .15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart

  456. of a child. The rod of discipline will remove

  457. it far from him. Proverbs 23 .13 -14 Do not hold

  458. back discipline from the child. Although you

  459. strike him with the rod, he will not die. You

  460. shall strike him with the rod and rescue his

  461. soul from Sheol. And then Proverbs 29, 15 and

  462. 17. The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child

  463. who gets his own way brings shame to his mother.

  464. Correct your son and he will give you comfort.

  465. He will also delight your soul. Clear instructions

  466. from the Word of God. Will you heed them? Will

  467. you put them into practice? This is the time,

  468. you young parents, this is the time, you young

  469. men, to begin all of these things. We all know,

  470. guys, it just gets harder. I remember as a young

  471. man, I was just speaking of developing habits,

  472. developing patterns in our lives. Those patterns,

  473. when we develop them, they're hard to break.

  474. We all know that. It's hard to break habits.

  475. And so if you're developing and setting bad habits

  476. now, it just gets harder as you get older. The

  477. longer you do it, the harder it is. And I always

  478. remember in high school, playing sports, right?

  479. Really busy. Well, when I'm done with high school,

  480. I'll have a little more time for the Lord. I'll

  481. be able to be more consistent, right? Because...

  482. I won't be playing basketball. I won't be playing

  483. this. I won't be doing that. I won't be having

  484. to go to the gym every day. Right? No, of course

  485. not. So I get into college and I'm like, well,

  486. this is a real drag. I'm working and I'm going

  487. to school now. And I'm trying to go to the gym.

  488. And I want to still have some time with my friends.

  489. And I want to see my girlfriend. But once I'm

  490. done with this. Once this phase of my life is

  491. over and I'm married or I just got my job, then

  492. I'm going to have time. I'll have time then.

  493. All this other stuff is gone, right? Easy. What

  494. happens? I get married. I've got a job. I've

  495. got two jobs. I've got some kids. Where's the

  496. time? I still don't have it. That's how it works.

  497. That's how we think. Next week, next month, after

  498. this busy, once this big thing gets over with.

  499. No, you're never going to have time. You have

  500. got to develop the time in your life. Develop

  501. the habits, the patterns. Now, being in the Word,

  502. leading your wife, disciplining your children.

  503. All of these things are now. Begin now, you unmarried

  504. folk. Now is the time to develop good habits

  505. and good patterns in your life. It's not going

  506. to get easier later. I promise. So far, in all

  507. that we've dealt with, who's been responsible?

  508. Men. You men, I have hopefully stressed, this

  509. is all on you. Everything that we've talked about

  510. today and everything we've talked about in the

  511. last two months is all on you. If you've not

  512. felt the weight of that, I don't think you've

  513. hurt me. I have felt the weight of it. As I teach

  514. these things, as I study and I think about what

  515. I'm going to say, I see my failures everywhere.

  516. I see that I've not loved my wife as I should.

  517. I've been impatient with her. I've not led her

  518. well. All of these things. I've failed in all

  519. of these things. I see my failures in all of

  520. them. Why do I say that? It's difficult. And

  521. we're not looking for perfection from everybody,

  522. but we've got to see. The weight of it all and

  523. the need to change. It is a huge weight upon

  524. you men. Everything is on your shoulders. The

  525. training, instruction, discipline of your children

  526. is your responsibility, not your wife's. Yes,

  527. she should be helping. She is going to have a

  528. role in it. It rests on you. If you've not felt

  529. that weight, you've not heard me. If you have

  530. felt that weight and that burden, good. Go to

  531. the Lord for the strength and the help that you

  532. need. And he will give it. He is there for us.

  533. He's commanded us to do these things. Do we not

  534. think he'll give us the strength, the wisdom,

  535. the direction to accomplish all that he's called

  536. us to? Of course he will. Be encouraged in that.

  537. If you failed, repent and move forward. Move

  538. forward in obedience. Look into the Lord for

  539. His help and for His guidance. Be encouraged

  540. that in Christ you can do these things. Okay?

  541. Again, we know we're going to fail. But that's

  542. no excuse. we're still going to press on faithfully

  543. doing all that the Lord has commanded. So be

  544. encouraged in that and press on it. Next week,

  545. Lord willing, we will look at wives and their

  546. responsibilities and what the Lord has called

  547. them to. Amen.
