  1. Before we read that, is there anything, any residuals

  2. from chapter 8 that anybody thought about in

  3. the past week and wants to bring up or something

  4. that needs to be said that wasn't said? Alright,

  5. then who wants to give us our introductory summation

  6. of what we're reading here in chapter 9? I have

  7. this section going. From chapter 9 through chapter

  8. 10, verse 16. We won't cover all that tonight,

  9. I don't think. But that's where the story of

  10. Saul's, whatever we're reading about. Who wants

  11. to summarize it for us? Well, Saul gets his dad's

  12. donkeys go missing. So Saul goes and he looks

  13. for the donkeys. He thinks that's what his mission

  14. is. He winds up with Samuel. And Samuel gives

  15. him some information about what's going on, what's

  16. going to happen. And then in chapter 10, he becomes

  17. a new man. The spirit rushes on him. He gets

  18. anointed by Samuel. He goes back home. and his

  19. uncle asks him what Samuel told him, and he doesn't

  20. tell him the whole story. So this whole section

  21. really is full of mystery and oddities, I guess

  22. you would say. And so I won't tell you everything

  23. that I got out of it, introductory, but hopefully

  24. whoever read it, You can see, I think probably

  25. God is the main character even in this chapter

  26. about Saul. One other interesting thing as we

  27. read through here is that this is, remember the

  28. people demanded a king like all the other nations.

  29. And so this is the story of Israel's first king,

  30. King Saul. What word is missing in this chapter

  31. and a half? King. There's no mention of a king.

  32. Now how can we have this Saul guy from this obscure

  33. Benjamite tribe, or tribe of Benjamin, and no

  34. mention of king? So we'll have to come up with

  35. an answer there. But as we read it, you'll notice

  36. that there's no mention of a king. So, 1 Samuel

    1 Samuel 9 chapter mention

  37. chapter 9 and verse 1. Now, there was a man of

  38. Benjamin whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel,

  39. the son of Zeror, the son of Bekarath, the son

  40. of Ephiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.

  41. So, now the people have just demanded that God

  42. give him a king. If we just stopped reading there,

  43. what would you think? Huh? He'd be the king.

  44. Here's this mighty man of power, this man of

  45. valor and influence. We've got his whole, well,

  46. not his whole, but we've got a genealogy here,

  47. typical of Hebrew writing. But it turns out that's

  48. not the case. And he had a son whose name was

  49. Saul, a choice young man and a goodly. And there

  50. was not among the children of Israel a goodlier

  51. person than he. From his shoulders and upwards

  52. he was higher than any of the people. And the

  53. asses of Kish, Saul's father, were lost. And

  54. Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the

  55. servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.

  56. And he passed through Mount Ephraim, and passed

  57. through the land of Salisha, but they found them

  58. not. Then they passed through the land of Shalim,

  59. and there And there they were not. And he passed

  60. through the land of the Benjamites, but they

  61. found them not. And when they were come to the

  62. land of Zuth, Saul said to his servant that was

  63. with him, Come, let us return, lest my father

  64. leave caring for the asses and take thought for

  65. us. And he said to him, Behold now, there is

  66. in this city a man of God, and he is an honorable

  67. man. and all that he saith cometh surely to pass.

  68. Now let us go thither. Peradventure he can show

  69. us our way that we should go. Then said Saul

  70. to his servant, But behold, if we go, what shall

  71. we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our

  72. vessels, and there is not a present to bring

  73. to the man of God. What have we? And the servant

  74. answered Saul again and said, Behold, I have

  75. here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver.

  76. That will I give to the man of God to tell us

  77. our way. Before time in Israel, when a man went

  78. to inquire of God, thus he spoke, Come and let

  79. us go to the seer. For he that is now called

  80. a prophet was before time called a seer. Then

  81. said Paul to his servant, Well said, come, let

  82. us go. So they went unto the city where the man

  83. of God was. And as they went up the hill to the

  84. city, they found young maidens going out to draw

  85. water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?

  86. And they answered them and said, He is. Behold,

  87. he is before you. Make haste now, for he came

  88. today to the city, for there is a sacrifice of

  89. the people today in the high place. As soon as

  90. he be come into the city, ye shall straightway

  91. find him, before he go up to the high place to

  92. eat, for the people will not eat until he come.

  93. because he doth bless the sacrifice. And afterwards

  94. they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you

  95. up, for about this time ye shall find him. And

  96. they went up into the city. And when they were

  97. come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against

  98. them, for to go up to the high place. Now the

  99. Lord had told Samuel in his ear a day before

  100. Saul came, saying, Tomorrow about this time I

  101. will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin.

  102. and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over

  103. my people Israel, that he may save my people

  104. out of the hand of the Philistines. For I have

  105. looked upon my people, because their cry is come

  106. unto me. And when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said

  107. unto him, Behold, the man whom I speak to this

  108. same shall reign over my people. Then Saul drew

  109. near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me,

  110. I pray thee, where is the seer's house? And Samuel

  111. answered Saul and said, I am the seer. Go up

  112. before me unto the high place, for ye shall eat

  113. with me today, and tomorrow I will let thee go,

  114. and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.

  115. And as for thine asses that were lost three days

  116. ago, set not thy mind on them, for they are found.

  117. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it

  118. not on thee and on thy father's house? And Saul

  119. answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite of the

  120. smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my family

  121. the least of all the families of the tribe of

  122. Benjamin? Wherefore then speakest thou so to

  123. me? And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and

  124. brought them into the parlor, and made them sit

  125. in the chiefest place among them that were bidden,

  126. which was about thirty persons. And Samuel said

  127. unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave

  128. thee, of which I said unto thee, set it by thee.

  129. And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which

  130. was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel

  131. said, Behold that which is left, set it before

  132. thee, and eat. For unto this time hath it been

  133. kept for thee, since I said, I have invited the

  134. people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.

  135. And when they were come down from the high place

  136. into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon

  137. the top of the house. And they arose early, and

  138. it came to pass about the spring of the day that

  139. Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying,

  140. Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose,

  141. and they went out, both of them, he and Samuel,

  142. abroad. And as they were going down to the end

  143. of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant

  144. pass before us. And he passed on. But stand thou

  145. still a while, that I may show thee the word

  146. of God. Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured

  147. it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is

  148. it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to

  149. be captain over his inheritance? When thou art

  150. departed from me today, then thou shalt find

  151. two men by Rachel's sepulcher in the border of

  152. Benjamin at Zelzah. And they will say unto thee,

  153. The asses which thou wentest to seek are found.

  154. And lo, thy father hath left the care of the

  155. asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall

  156. I do for my son? Then shalt thou go on forward

  157. from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain

  158. of Tabor. And there shall meet thee three men

  159. going up to God to Bethel. one carrying three

  160. kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread,

  161. and another carrying a bottle of wine. And they

  162. will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of

  163. bread, which thou shalt receive of their hands.

  164. After that thou shalt come to the hill of God,

  165. where is the garrison of the Philistines, and

  166. it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither

  167. to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of

  168. prophets coming down from the high place. with

  169. a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp

  170. before them, and they shall prophesy. And the

  171. Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou

  172. shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned

  173. into another man. And it shall be, when these

  174. signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion

  175. serve thee, for God is with thee. And thou shalt

  176. go down before me to Gilgal, and behold, I will

  177. come down unto thee to offer burnt offerings

  178. and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings.

  179. Seven days shalt thou tarry till I come to thee,

  180. and show thee what thou shalt do. And it was

  181. so that when he had turned his back to go from

  182. Samuel, God gave him another heart, and all those

  183. signs came to pass that day. And when they came

  184. thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets

  185. met him, and the Spirit of God came upon him,

  186. and he prophesied among them. And it came to

  187. pass, when all that knew him before time saw

  188. that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets.

  189. Then the people said one to another, What is

  190. this that has come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul

  191. also among the prophets? And one of the same

  192. place answered and said, But who is their father?

  193. Therefore it has become a proverb, Is Saul also

  194. among the prophets? And when he had made an end

  195. of prophesying, he came to the high place. And

  196. Saul's uncle said unto him and to his servant,

  197. Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses.

  198. And when we saw that they were nowhere, we came

  199. to Samuel. And Saul's uncle said, Tell me, I

  200. pray thee, what Samuel said unto you. And Saul

  201. said unto him, And Saul said unto his uncle,

  202. He told us plainly that the asses were found.

  203. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel

  204. spake, he told him not. There's some odd verses

  205. in there, some verses that might seem a little

  206. bit out of place. Particularly the one that talks

  207. about the seer and the prophet. What did you

  208. guys think when you saw that verse? Why was that

  209. put in there? Anybody got any ideas? Who put

  210. that in there? Nobody? Okay, well tell me what

  211. you got out of it. Tell me what lessons you want

  212. us all to learn. He doesn't, like he gave Samuel

  213. a word for Saul. And he put Saul in Samuel's,

  214. I don't know if I'm going to say like his path,

  215. but they ran into each other like that was an

  216. accident. Okay. What do we typically call that?

  217. That work of God. What is it? Providence. Providence.

  218. So this chapter is full of just really normal

  219. everyday stuff. But the God who reigns above

  220. is working through all these seemingly ordinary

  221. things. The guy's donkeys go missing. Well, nobody

  222. would say, well, now God's getting ready to work.

  223. We're going to have a king here soon. Just this

  224. unknown guy, his donkeys go missing. But God

  225. who rules above and works through providence

  226. was the one that drove those donkeys to wherever

  227. they were going and hit them. and hid him from

  228. Saul, that's providence. So yeah, that's all

  229. through here. That's a good catch. What else?

  230. Saul is kind of a great tragedy of the Old Testament.

  231. He starts off with all this stuff where he's

  232. prophesying the spirit of God on him. and all

  233. this stuff, and then it turns out bad at the

  234. end. And so that's what sticks out to me, is

  235. all this, like, how does the Spirit of God come

  236. upon a man and make him prophesy? But it turns

  237. out he's not a good guy at all. That's what was

  238. interesting to me. Well, that was the same things

  239. that we encountered all through Judges, right?

  240. And what did we say about the Spirit coming upon

  241. a judge? It didn't guarantee what. I never said

  242. that. It didn't guarantee obedience. He said

  243. salvation. It didn't, well, salvation from the

  244. enemy, yes, because that's what the judge was

  245. raised up. But it didn't seem to guarantee obedience

  246. at all, did it? It didn't, it didn't, in other

  247. words, the spirit came upon those judges for

  248. very specific reasons and, you know. I think

  249. it's fair for us to say that the Spirit remained

  250. with them, but the Spirit didn't force them to

  251. obey every word of God. Are you filled with the

  252. Spirit? Yeah. And do you obey God in every turn?

  253. And do you lay that, do you charge the Holy Spirit

  254. with some offense in that? No. So, Saul is the

  255. same way. The Spirit came on him and he did disobey.

  256. What? Does anybody have a guess as to why is

  257. it that Saul couldn't get along with God? Have

  258. you given any thought to that? Where did Saul

  259. and God come to loggerheads? was when you tried

  260. to do things his own way instead of God's way.

  261. Okay. So... Is he the ultimate example of not

  262. God's way? I mean, right in Samuel, I mean, he's

  263. not, even though God sovereignly ordained him

  264. to become king in a sense, but it was also, like

  265. Brian said, I guess he was a type in picture

  266. of not God's way. And throughout his life he

  267. proved that he never wanted to do things God's

  268. way. Okay. I think you and Brian said very similar

  269. things there. Wasn't it he offered sacrifices?

  270. To me that was like he treated it as this isn't

  271. a big deal. Anybody can do this. I don't have

  272. to be a... priest or anything I can offer these

  273. sacrifices and do it myself and then afterwards

  274. I'm just going off memory here but I don't think

  275. he was that repentant about it you know like

  276. David messed up a few times and David was really

  277. broken about it and repentant and it seemed like

  278. in my mind Saul had more of a Okay. So, when

  279. we come to loggerheads with God, what are we

  280. saying? When we sit, if you don't like loggerheads,

  281. we'll say, when we sit, what are we saying? Okay,

  282. and what? Okay, because we reject God's authority.

  283. Okay, that's what Brian is talking about. That's

  284. what Jake is talking about. God sits as the authority

  285. and God says, this is what I expect from you.

  286. This is what you should do. If you want to worship

  287. me, worship me in this way. If you want to be,

  288. if you're going to be a father, be a father in

  289. this way. Whatever. Whatever part of your life,

  290. every part of your life, God speaks into and

  291. gives you direction. And when you say, well,

  292. like Brian said, well, I don't think this is

  293. a big deal. Then what you're saying is, God,

  294. you don't have authority in this part of my life

  295. to tell me what to do. I think that my way is

  296. pretty good. And so I'm going to do that. That

  297. was Saul's problem. Saul, now. Saul always thought

  298. that kingship meant what? A king like all the

  299. other nations. I'm looking out here and I'm seeing

  300. these kings. And I've even listened to what Samuel

  301. told everybody was going to be a king. Everything

  302. in the land belongs to me. The people belong

  303. to me. There's no what? There's no authority

  304. over me. So when you're reading through this,

  305. and you're studying it, one of the things that

  306. you're confronted with is that it doesn't seem

  307. that Saul is taking that kind of a dominant position

  308. here in this chapter from the very get -go. And

  309. why is that? Like Saul sits down at the prime

  310. place at the table. Why? Did anybody think about

  311. that? Why did Samuel sit him there at the head

  312. of the table, in the best place? What do you

  313. think? It wasn't because what? Okay, it wasn't

  314. because Saul was a head taller than everybody.

  315. It wasn't because he was this goodly man that

  316. we're told all about. It wasn't because he had

  317. maybe a prominent father back in the Benjamite

  318. territory. It was because what? God put him there.

  319. So what does that show? Who's in charge? Who

  320. has the authority? Who tells somebody to sit

  321. at the prime place of the table? Who? And in

  322. this case, he did it through the means of who?

  323. Samuel. So Samuel said, sit here. That was a

  324. word from God. That was God putting Saul right

  325. there at the head of the table in the prime spot.

  326. When he gets anointed, What did Samuel say? Was

  327. it Samuel that was anointing him? Mike? Who was

  328. anointing him? Okay, and God used Samuel with

  329. the anointing oil. But it was God that was doing

  330. the anointing. Now, who does the anointing? Okay,

  331. that's fine. Put it in your head. Don't forget.

  332. Who does the anointed? Well, do they just call

  333. the servant girl? Do they just call the lowest

  334. of the low? Hey, we're going to anoint somebody.

  335. Let's go out in the fields and find a field worker.

  336. Is that who does the anointed? Somebody with...

  337. Somebody with authority does the anointing. And

  338. who's doing the anointing? That's right, not

  339. Samuel, it's God. So all through this chapter,

  340. what you should be seeing, or what I should be

  341. seeing, is that there is a king over all. And

  342. that king, in this case, is going to name an

  343. earthly king to administer justice, restraint.

  344. among the people of Israel. But it's God who's

  345. ruling and reigning. Now that's, we said this

  346. I think last week. Essentially that was what

  347. the judge did. So Saul, and I think when you're

  348. reading this, if you remember back to what we

  349. read in Judges, it sounds an awful lot like a

  350. judge. An enemy comes up, in this case the Philistines,

  351. and God raises up a judge and the judge goes

  352. out and defeats the enemy and restores. peace

  353. and freedom in Israel and then the people turn

  354. their backs and they go their own way and it's

  355. a recurring cycle throughout the book that's

  356. what that's what's going on here so it's not

  357. that if there's a king then God can't be king

  358. over him Saul just never recognized the authority

  359. over him whether it came from Samuel or whether

  360. he recognized it as a word from God, Saul was

  361. a king and an authority unto himself. And so

  362. that, I think, as you study this and as we talk

  363. about it, if you remember that, it will start

  364. to make a little bit more sense to you. Now,

  365. go ahead, Jacob. What's your question? Does it

  366. say of any of the other judges, or of any other...

  367. Yeah, so what do you think that means? Don't

  368. know. Anybody else give any thought to that?

  369. Want to venture a guess or offer an opinion for

  370. us? Emma, you look like you're ready. Okay, that's

  371. fine. Well, one thing we have to be cautious

  372. of, especially when we're studying the Old Testament,

  373. is to read into the Old Testament New Testament

  374. language. So, God promises in the New Covenant

  375. that he's going to give all of his people a new

  376. heart. They're all going to know me. So, the

  377. question that I think is on your mind, and probably

  378. everyone else's, is this. some version of the

  379. new covenant before the new covenant was established.

  380. And so Saul was getting the new covenant treatment

  381. way back here in the Old Testament. Right? It

  382. can't be that. But I mean, that's what we tend

  383. to think. Is that right? Yeah, for sure. Okay,

  384. so it's not that. So what does the word heart

  385. mean in the Old Testament? So the center of his

  386. being, I think in the Hebrew part, could mean

  387. all kinds of things. But essentially, it means

  388. the center of a person. So something did change

  389. about Saul, without a doubt. Otherwise, the verse

  390. is meaningless. But we can't read into it that

  391. he was regenerated by the Holy Spirit. That would

  392. be to read into the Old Testament, New Testament

  393. language. Before we got here to Samuel, or maybe

  394. we took a break here, but we talked about change,

  395. right? And how does a Christian change? And what

  396. are the means that God gives us for change? And

  397. one of the things we noticed is that in the Old

  398. Testament, that work of the Spirit, that transforming

  399. work of the Spirit that's changing you and me

  400. progressively into to look and to act, to look...

  401. to others by our actions more and more like Jesus.

  402. That work didn't go on in the Old Testament.

  403. We don't have any, well, I guess I can't say

  404. that definitively. What I can say is that we're

  405. not given any evidence of it in the Scriptures.

  406. So maybe it happened, but it wasn't important

  407. enough for us to know about it, and that's fine.

  408. But I think if it was a work of the Spirit in

  409. the Old Testament, I think we would see evidence

  410. of it. Even in the life of David, we don't see,

  411. What you're seeing in the life of Saul. We see

  412. some similar things. In the life of David. He

  413. ends his life. In a pretty bad way. So I mean.

  414. And all the judges. None of them did. What we

  415. would expect them to do. So I want to be. I want

  416. to be a little bit more cautious than you are.

  417. In saying Saul is this bad guy. Or you know.

  418. Of course there's hope for Saul. I mean. Samuel

  419. mentions Jephthah, the guy that sacrifices his

  420. daughter. Jephthah is in the hall of faith in

  421. Hebrews. If there's hope for him, there's hope

  422. for Saul. Saul never did go through with killing

  423. God's anointed, David, even though he chased

  424. him down for years. Are you expecting to see

  425. Saul in heaven when you go? I refuse to pass

  426. judgment on him. I would have to say I'm not

  427. expecting it. Okay. Thankfully, it's not given

  428. to us to be the judge, the jury, and the executioner.

  429. So I'm probably a little more optimistic than

  430. your grandpa. But I'm optimistic even of all

  431. the judges. Left a legacy of chaos. Okay, what

  432. else? Yes. Yeah, I mean, he was a changed man.

  433. Remember, now, the word, I don't know what the

  434. word is in the King James about the spirit coming

  435. on you. When Samuel makes that declaration to

  436. Saul. In verse 6 of chapter 10. Yeah, so he says

  437. the Spirit will come upon him. Yeah, and then

  438. in verse 10 it says, And the Spirit of God came

  439. upon him. There's only three people in the Bible

  440. where that is said. The word literally, and probably

  441. easier, is rushed upon him. So who are those

  442. three people? Anybody know? We've already studied

  443. one of them back in... Samson is one. Saul is

  444. the second. And who's the third? David. Now,

  445. you remember what happened when the spirit rushed

  446. upon Samson. What did he do? Okay, he killed

  447. a bunch of people with what? And then he found

  448. what? A wild and roaring lion that he tore into

  449. pieces. So, what was your question? Okay. So

  450. when the spirit rushed upon Samson, he changed.

  451. Okay. He saw that lion and he tore it to shreds.

  452. Now, was that a lifetime of slow progressive

  453. change? Was that a change that lasted for the

  454. rest of his life? That's where we get into the

  455. question of whether or not we expect to see Saul

  456. in heaven. But he did change. And when Saul changed

  457. here, what did he do? He prophesied. So the change

  458. is evident, and I think it's, but some things

  459. didn't change. But there was a change that happened.

  460. What did everybody else think when it said that

  461. Samuel is going to tell them tomorrow that something

  462. else is on Saul's mind? Did you guys catch that

  463. in chapter 9? In verse 19, For ye shall eat with

  464. me today, and tomorrow I will let thee go, and

  465. I will tell thee all that is in thine heart.

  466. And as for thine asses that were lost three days

  467. ago, set not thy mind on them, they've been found.

  468. What was on Saul's mind? The donkeys? It wasn't

  469. the donkeys. Yeah, the desire of all Israel.

  470. Right. That's right after. That's in verse 20.

  471. 19 and then verse 20. No, so that wasn't on his

  472. mind. But that was Samuel's answer to him in

  473. that day. What does that mean? You got any idea

  474. for us? The end of verse 20. And on whom is all

  475. the desire of Israel. Is it not on thee and on

  476. thy father's house? Did we just lose the mic

  477. again? Okay. I'll speak louder. So what does

  478. that phrase mean? So they're fixing their desire

  479. on... They're seeing Saul as the answer to their

  480. demand for a king. I think that's probably most

  481. likely what it is. So it seems peculiar, at least,

  482. that Samuel says to Saul, I'm going to tell you

  483. everything else that's on your heart, and I'm

  484. going to give you a foretaste now that all of

  485. Israel is looking to you as the answer to their

  486. demand for a king. So I'm suspecting that somewhere

  487. in Saul's heart, this idea had already come upon

  488. him that he was going to be a significant figure

  489. in the history of Israel. And he had his eye

  490. on the throne. That's my guess. And the closest

  491. thing to king that we have in this whole section

  492. that we read is when Samuel responds to his uncle

  493. and he says, All he told me about was where the

  494. lost donkeys were. But the narrator tells us

  495. he didn't tell him anything about what Samuel

  496. had told him about the kingdom. Now, so whose

  497. perspective is that from? When you're reading,

  498. you've got to know whose eyes am I seeing this

  499. thing through? And we go back and forth. At the

  500. beginning, we're seeing it through Saul's eyes.

  501. Then we're seeing it through Samuel's eyes. And

  502. then we get the chances to see it also through

  503. God's eyes. And at the end, what we're seeing

  504. is that the perspective from Saul's eyes is that

  505. he withheld from his uncle the information that

  506. he had on his heart about what was going to happen

  507. with the kingdom of Israel. So the only mention,

  508. the closest mention of king, Comes from Saul's

  509. own mind. So. I you know. Why is this all kind

  510. of like. I won't say confusing. Because I don't

  511. think it's confusing. But it's all like mysterious.

  512. And kind of. Not in black and white. Why is that?

  513. Anybody give any thought to that? Why no king?

  514. Why doesn't Samuel just come right out when Saul

  515. walks up like he did when he saw David and say,

  516. behold, the first king of Israel. Why doesn't

  517. he do that? Nobody gave him any thought to that.

  518. Well, I think there's a couple reasons. Number

  519. one, the role of a king in Israel was... What?

  520. Ill -defined? Do we want to use that terminology?

  521. I mean, we had those verses back there in Deuteronomy,

  522. and then Samuel gave instruction. We have allusions

  523. to it back even in the Garden, and then to Abraham

  524. and to Sarah. But, you know, it's yet to be defined.

  525. So what you're seeing here in these chapters

  526. is the very beginnings. of a definition of what

  527. it means to be a king in Israel. And God in his

  528. mercy and in his long suffering just gave opportunity

  529. after opportunity after opportunity to Saul to

  530. reckon himself to the idea that God was the king

  531. and he was going to mediate God's rule to the

  532. people through Saul. So that's what's going on

  533. here. The reason it isn't just come right out

  534. and said is because Saul didn't have any idea

  535. what a king was supposed to be any more than

  536. probably 99 % of the rest of the Israelites.

  537. There was undoubtedly a few that had remembered

  538. or oral traditions that had passed down about

  539. Deuteronomy 17 and expected that... There would

  540. be a king and that king would have the law of

  541. God on his right hand side that he had written

  542. and that everything he did he would check according

  543. to that revealed will of God as he led the people.

  544. So that's one of the reasons that it's kind of

  545. a little bit blurry and doesn't come right out.

  546. What's the other reason? I think probably because

  547. The people demanded it, and they demanded a king

  548. like all the other nations, and they had this

  549. idea in their head the same way that Saul did,

  550. that he was going to be the only authority. And,

  551. you know, I won't say it wasn't God's will, because

  552. we've already heard that God was providentially

  553. working to bring to pass the installation and

  554. the anointing of Saul as king in Israel. But

  555. it wasn't... God's revealed will for the people,

  556. for kingship to come about in this way. And so

  557. I think that's why we don't see just this overwhelming

  558. declarations of joy and glory and rejoicing that

  559. kingship had come to Israel. That's my guess.

  560. It's all full of mystery. Does anybody see any

  561. irony in any of this? I'm so glad you said Paul

  562. because I don't know how many times in my head

  563. I've said Paul. I mean there's nothing in there.

  564. There's nothing in the text that would lead us

  565. to believe that this was some kind of false humility.

  566. I think he probably, I mean, I think he believed

  567. it. Kish was a mighty man of influence. Oh, Kish,

  568. his father was. Yeah, but what do we know about

  569. the tribe of Benjamin? What? They're the worst.

  570. If Saul traced his lineage back, it would be,

  571. how many options would he have for a father?

  572. I think it was 50, right? There was 50 men left

  573. in Benjamin because what? Because they killed

  574. the, where was that guy from? The Ephraimite?

  575. Yeah. Remember? And then all of Israel came upon

  576. him and they killed them all. And they said,

  577. hold on a minute. We got to have 12 tribes here.

  578. And there was 50 of them left, but there was

  579. no women left. And so what was the solution?

  580. They said, sneak up that way. There's going to

  581. be a party. And you 50 guys just go in there

  582. and trick everybody and make them think that

  583. you're here for the party. And then when nobody's

  584. looking, snag you a woman and get back down there

  585. to Benjamin. Now, that's where the tribe of Benjamin

  586. came from. So, I mean, if Saul wouldn't have

  587. been a little bit like just a few hundred years

  588. ago or just a little while ago, all of Israel

  589. was against us, and it was just 50 of us. And

  590. now, yeah, we've lived there, but it's kind of

  591. easy to make money when there's only 50 of you

  592. in this big old territory. All 50 of us are landowners

  593. now. So I think it was probably legitimate. I

  594. don't see any reason for us to question it. It's

  595. the same type of declaration that we've heard

  596. from who? Not in this book necessarily, not in

  597. Samuel, but as you've read your Bible. Who else

  598. said something similar to that? Okay, and who

  599. else? Okay, so those are two pretty good. And

  600. they've said the same thing that Saul has said.

  601. It's been presented to us in the same way as

  602. Moses was. It's 802. Somebody should have hollered

  603. at him. Alright, so next week we will get further

  604. into it. So now you've got some thought. Maybe

  605. you've organized it in your mind a little bit.

  606. And then come prepared. We'll get some good application.

  607. answers, hopefully.
