  2. Thessalonians 1:

  3. 1-2 Paul Sylvanas and Timothy to the

  4. Church of the Thessalonians in God our

  5. Father and the Lord Jesus Christ grace

  6. to you and peace from God our Father and

  7. the Lord Jesus Christ we ought always to

  8. give thanks to God for you Brothers as

  9. is right because your faith is growing

  10. abundantly and the love of every one of

  11. you for one another is increasing

  12. therefore we ourselves boast about you

  13. in the Churches of God for your

  14. steadfastness and faith in all your

  15. persecutions and in the afflictions that

  16. you are enduring this is evidence of the

  17. righteous Judgment of God that you may

  18. be considered worthy of the kingdom of

  19. God for which you are also suffering

  20. since indeed God considers it just to

  21. repay with Affliction those who afflict

  22. you and to Grant relief to you who are

  23. afflicted as well as to us when the Lord

  24. Jesus is revealed from heaven with his

  25. mighty Angels inflaming fire inflicting

  26. Vengeance on those who do not know God

  27. and on those who do not obey the gospel

  28. of our Lord Jesus they will suffer the

  29. punishment of Eternal destruction away

  30. from the presence of the Lord and from

  31. the glory of of his might when he comes

  32. on that day to be glorified in his

  33. Saints and to be marveled at among all

  34. who have believed because our testimony

  35. to you was believed to this end we

  36. always pray for you that our God may

  37. make you worthy of his calling and may

  38. fulfill every resolve for good and every

  39. work of Faith by his power so that the

  40. name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified

  41. in you and you in him according to the

  42. grace of our God and the Lord Jes Jesus

  43. Christ well hello and welcome to the

  44. weekend gathering at Christ Community

  45. Chapel my name is Zach I'm one of the

  46. pastors here and I'm so glad you're here

  47. with us this weekend as we continue our

  48. fall sermon series looking at first and

  49. second Thessalonians we are beginning

  50. now this week second Thessalonians and I

  51. guess that's a good place to start

  52. because you know there's not a second of

  53. every book in the the New Testament

  54. there's not a second Ephesians or a

  55. second Colossians or second Philippians

  56. but there is a second Thessalonians

  57. meaning Paul didn't just write one

  58. letter to this church he wrote two and

  59. that begs the question why write a

  60. second letter what what's the reason for

  61. that why did he feel that was necessary

  62. and the answer we're going to find over

  63. the next couple of weeks is that he has

  64. two reasons for writing 2 Thessalonians

  65. that the the first is that he has to

  66. clarify some things that he says in

  67. first Thessalonians there are some

  68. things that he said in first

  69. Thessalonians that have caused some

  70. people to freak out a little bit and

  71. he's got to come back with second

  72. Thessalonians and explain a little more

  73. and and we'll get to some of those

  74. passages in the weeks to come but the

  75. second reason he writes the follow-up

  76. letter to the Thessalonian church is to

  77. encourage them remember that this is a

  78. church that is suffering because of

  79. their faith this is a church that's

  80. undergoing persecution it's a church who

  81. is in constant need of Paul telling them

  82. keep going don't give up hang in there

  83. it will be worth it he's encouraging

  84. them and so what I want you to keep in

  85. mind is that Paul's goal in this passage

  86. is to encourage the church that God

  87. calls good and what we're going to look

  88. for is whatever he's holding out to them

  89. for encouragement should translate to

  90. encourage us as well so if you have a

  91. Bible would you open it to 2

  92. Thessalonians uh you can take out your

  93. your phone or a device a tablet of some

  94. sort be happy to have you do that if

  95. you're watching online you can open the

  96. web browser uh 2 Thessalonians chapter 1

    2 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  97. if you're new here and you didn't bring

  98. a Bible and you'd like to use a Bible uh

  99. I'd love to offer you one of the Pew

  100. Bibles in front of you or in the back of

  101. the room in East Hall and if you grab

  102. one of those I can tell you that today's

  103. reading is on page

  104. 930 I'm glad that you're here thanks for

  105. coming but by the way the verses will

  106. also be on the screen behind me as we go

  107. through uh I'm going to use three points

  108. as an outline to guide our time together

  109. three things that I think we need to

  110. lean into to understand the

  111. encouragement that's here for us in 2

    2 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  112. Thessalonians chapter 1 and those three

  113. points are very simple and alliterated

  114. for those of you that enjoy that like me

  115. those three points are this I want to

  116. talk about truth timing and trajectory

  117. truth timing and trajectory all right

  118. let's start with the first one truth

  119. this passage is about an

  120. uncomfortable topic by the way last time

  121. I preached my topic was

  122. death and this week my topic is judgment

  123. and and don't feel sorry for me though I

  124. I was going to get mad at somebody this

  125. week and then I remembered that I'm the

  126. one that planned this false preaching

  127. calendar so I have only to blame myself

  128. for giving myself these topics the topic

  129. here is Judgment the truth that Paul is

  130. wanting to convey is about God's

  131. judgment and the reason I use the

  132. heading truth is because this is a topic

  133. we don't like to talk about in

  134. 2024 this is a topic that churches like

  135. to avoid that Christians like to pretend

  136. isn't in there it's one of those

  137. doctrines that you kind of put your

  138. hands over your ears and over your eyes

  139. and just kind of say no no no no no no

  140. so that it doesn't somehow get in there

  141. we don't like to think about or talk

  142. about or hear sermons about or if I'm

  143. honest preach sermons about judgment but

  144. I want you to see it is

  145. inescapably in the Bible there it is

  146. it's in the Bible by the way let me say

  147. this before I read it I've spent most of

  148. my educational career studying

  149. worldviews and philosophies and other

  150. religions and how they compare and

  151. contrast that's kind of what I nerd out

  152. on and in all my studying the one

  153. worldview that stands out to me as the

  154. most

  155. ridiculous the one philosophy that I

  156. just think is completely backwards and

  157. ignorant the one religion that makes

  158. absolute sense if I'm honest I absolute

  159. nonsense if I'm honest is what I'll call

  160. Nom

  161. Christianity it's a Christianity that

  162. that that takes some of the Bible

  163. seriously and and in other parts of the

  164. Bible not so

  165. seriously it's the it's the kind of

  166. Christianity that says I like the parts

  167. about Grace and forgiveness and mercy

  168. but not the parts about judgment friends

  169. if you were to take out all the sections

  170. of the Bible about judgment I want you

  171. to know you wouldn't have much Bible

  172. left

  173. you'd lose parts of

  174. Genesis the whole first half of

  175. Exodus you'd lose Joshua for sure judges

  176. definitely all the Minor Prophets would

  177. be gone whole sections of the gospels

  178. there goes Matthew

  179. 25 Mark 13 you'd lose Paul's sermon in

  180. Acts 17 you definitely lose the entire

  181. Book of Revelation you get my

  182. point so either we believe the Bible and

  183. believe it is God's revelation to us and

  184. it is the way he communicates to us and

  185. with us and guides us or we don't and

  186. either one of those viewpoints makes

  187. sense to me logically the one that

  188. doesn't is the picking and choosing

  189. because the same Bible that says

  190. everything I want to hold on to is the

  191. same one that says this beginning in

  192. verse 5 this is what Paul says this is

  193. evidence of the righteous Judgment of

  194. God

  195. that you may be considered worthy of the

  196. kingdom of God for which you are also

  197. suffering since indeed God considers it

  198. just to repay with Affliction those who

  199. afflict you and to Grant relief to you

  200. who are afflicted as well to us when the

  201. Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with

  202. his mighty Angels INF flaming fire

  203. inflicting Vengeance on those who do not

  204. know God and on those who do not obey

  205. the gospel of Our Lord Jesus they will

  206. suffer the punishment of Eternal

  207. destruction away from the presence of

  208. the Lord and from the glory of his might

  209. I mean there it is it's inescapable it's

  210. unavoidable there it is literally in

  211. black and white and I want you to see

  212. that this passage isn't just talking

  213. about God's judgment it's telling us

  214. three things about God's judgment that I

  215. just want to hit quickly those three

  216. things are this that God's judgment is

  217. certain do you see in this passage

  218. there's no if then there's no

  219. conditional statement there's no if we

  220. don't figure it out if we don't get our

  221. act in order I I if we would just do

  222. this it wouldn't happen no no no he he

  223. speaks with certainty there's a day

  224. fixed in human

  225. history where it will be the

  226. end and Jesus Will judge all peoples who

  227. have lived in all times and all places

  228. God's judgment is certain the second

  229. thing I want you to see that he says is

  230. that God's judgment is

  231. awful now the Bible uses a lot of

  232. metaphorical language when it talks

  233. about judgment it'll use words like like

  234. fire and smoke and sulfur and then if

  235. I'm honest even Bible scholars will say

  236. it is tough to tell when it's being

  237. literal and when it's being figurative

  238. but even if the words fire and sulfur

  239. and smoke are figurative they don't

  240. figure something

  241. positive but the most damning thing

  242. about hell is what he says here in 2

  243. Thessalonians 1 that it is a place from

  244. which God will turn his

  245. back but the

  246. finality of Hell the finality of those

  247. who face God's judgment and receive

  248. negative results is that they will be

  249. separated from God and that is the most

  250. terrible thing you could ever

  251. imagine it is certain it is awful and

  252. then finally it is

  253. eternal there have been some throughout

  254. the history of the church who have

  255. sought to kind of neutralize this

  256. Doctrine to minimize it to make it a

  257. little more palatable and what they'll

  258. say is that well what happens on the day

  259. of judgment is is that God will separate

  260. those that belong to him and and those

  261. who do not and those who do not will

  262. just simply cease to exist but that is

  263. not the picture here in 2 Thessalonians

    2 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  264. chapter 1 the language here of Eternal

  265. destruction implies that as God turns

  266. away from people in whatever sense he

  267. means they begin to disintegrate they

  268. begin to come undone but the process of

  269. becoming undone is forever

  270. and this is the

  271. Bible this is the book on which we pin

  272. all of our hopes of knowing that God

  273. loves us that God will forgive us that

  274. God will include us that God has a

  275. kingdom that there's a place for us it's

  276. the same book that tells us God's

  277. judgment is certain it is awful and it

  278. is

  279. eternal we cannot be a church that

  280. covers our ears or eyes in the face of

  281. truth no matter how difficult it is to

  282. preach or to

  283. hear now it would be fair at this point

  284. for you to say no hold on a second Zach

  285. you started this sermon by saying Paul

  286. writes 2 Thessalonians to encourage them

  287. and I'm not finding a lot of

  288. encouragement in this and that's fair

  289. that's a fair fair point and actually

  290. the tension there between hold on a

  291. second why does he write to encourage

  292. enage them and to write about judgment

  293. is the key to understanding this passage

  294. and actually if you would you can just

  295. look if you have a Bible open at the

  296. first couple of verses you'll see I'm

  297. not going to read them for time's sake

  298. but he's effusive in his encouragement

  299. he is very happy he's writing about

  300. judgment he's in a good

  301. mood he wants to say good things to them

  302. and the first good thing he has to say

  303. to them is that God's judgment is

  304. certain it is awful and it is eternal so

  305. that that that begs the question that

  306. might be true but what in the world is

  307. going on second point with Paul's

  308. timing why is he bringing up judgment in

  309. when he's trying to encourage them and

  310. here's what I want you to understand and

  311. what I've been praying all week you

  312. might get for the very first time when

  313. you understand what the Bible teaches

  314. about God's judgment correctly you will

  315. understand it is meant to be a doctrine

  316. that encourages

  317. you it really is it is meant to

  318. encourage you and I know you might say

  319. well why how what do you mean how in the

  320. world could it encourage me and I have

  321. three answers to that and they are that

  322. in judgment what Paul is saying that on

  323. the day of judgment God is saying three

  324. very powerful things to you on the day

  325. of judgment here they are he's saying I

  326. see you I see them and welcome in I want

  327. you to hear this God on the day of

  328. judgment is saying three things I see

  329. you I see them and welcome in let's just

  330. start with I see you on the day of

  331. judgment there is an accounting whereby

  332. God

  333. acknowledges all that we have done in

  334. obedience to him look at what Paul says

  335. in in uh second uh 2 Thessalonians

    2 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  336. chapter 1 he says this in verse six

  337. since indeed God considers it just to

  338. repay with Affliction those who to

  339. afflict you listen and to Grant relief

  340. to you who are afflicted as well as to

  341. us Paul says there's something about the

  342. day of judgment that is meant to be a

  343. relief and elsewhere the Bible will tell

  344. us that relief comes in the form of God

  345. acknowledging all the things that you

  346. and I have done in obedience and in

  347. trust to him and the reason why that's

  348. so important is because so often those

  349. things go seeming ly

  350. unnoticed think about how many times you

  351. have done something under the conviction

  352. that it is what God has wanted you to do

  353. and you have not gotten anything good as

  354. a

  355. result think about all the times you

  356. have not done something that everyone

  357. else was doing or that you wanted to do

  358. or that made sense to you because God

  359. told you no and you still are waiting to

  360. see some kind of positive result about

  361. that think about all the stands you have

  362. taken in little ways and in big ways

  363. where you woke up the next day feeling

  364. just the same and how many times have

  365. you wondered God are you seeing me are

  366. you paying attention to me do you see

  367. what I'm doing when can I hope for some

  368. kind of acknowledgement and the Bible

  369. says that acknowledgement comes on the

  370. day of

  371. judgment Jesus says it this way in

  372. Matthew 25 he says on the day of

  373. judgment he will separate people into

  374. two categories the sheep and the goats

  375. and to the Sheep he will say you visited

  376. me when I was sick you took care of me

  377. when I was in need you visited me when I

  378. was in jail he'll go through this long

  379. list you clothed me when I was naked you

  380. fed me when I was hungry and they will

  381. say Lord when did we do these things and

  382. he will say when you did it to the least

  383. of these you did it unto me do you know

  384. what he's saying he's saying I saw

  385. you I saw you when you went on those h

  386. hospital visits when you went on those

  387. jail visits when you were feeding when

  388. you cut back on the family budget so

  389. that you could be generous to your

  390. neighbor I know you didn't think I was

  391. paying attention but I was Brothers and

  392. Sisters in Christ hear me on the day of

  393. judgment God will be saying to you I am

  394. here to reward you I see you not a

  395. single thing you do for him will be

  396. wasted not a single stand you take will

  397. go

  398. unnoticed the second thing though that

  399. he's saying about the day of judgment is

  400. not just that he sees you but that he

  401. sees them do you remember he's writing

  402. to a church that is suffering he's

  403. writing to a church that's being

  404. persecuted which is why in verse 6 he

  405. says since indeed God considers it just

  406. to repay with Affliction those who

  407. afflict you now listen I want to get

  408. really serious here for a second second

  409. I've told you this story before but I'm

  410. going to tell it to you again I was once

  411. sitting down with a young lady sharing

  412. the Gospel of Jesus with her and I could

  413. tell I mean I I could just tell she

  414. believed everything that the Bible was

  415. saying about

  416. Jesus she believed he was the son of God

  417. she believed he died for her she

  418. believed he rose from the dead she

  419. believed that through him she could have

  420. eternal life but she was unwilling to

  421. call herself a Christian she was

  422. unwilling to surrender and so I finally

  423. asked her hey what is holding you

  424. back and she looked at me and she said

  425. listen I know if I become a

  426. Christian Jesus will want me to forgive

  427. my abusive

  428. father she said I grew up in an abusive

  429. home I was abused my entire

  430. childhood and I know if I give my life

  431. to Jesus he'll want me to forgive him

  432. and then she said this and if I forgive

  433. him he gets away with everything

  434. maybe that's your

  435. story friends do you know what the day

  436. of judgment is telling

  437. you no one gets

  438. away with

  439. anything there's a reckoning

  440. coming there's a reckoning coming when

  441. you read about Jesus coming back with

  442. angels and and fire and

  443. Vengeance it's because every victim

  444. every person who's been hurt every

  445. victim of abuse every victim of betrayal

  446. every victim of crime every victim who's

  447. ever been was made in the image of God

  448. and as one man said a long time ago

  449. Justice delayed is not Justice denied

  450. the day of judgment is a reckoning for

  451. those who have hurt you it isn't just

  452. God saying I see you it's God saying I

  453. see them

  454. and the third thing the day of judgment

  455. offers us is God saying welcome in verse

  456. 10 is one of the most beautiful verses

  457. In this passage it says this when he

  458. comes on that day to be glorified in his

  459. Saints and to be marveled at among all

  460. who have

  461. believed because our testimony to you

  462. was believed the day of judgment is a

  463. day where those who have believed in

  464. Jesus Will Marvel at him here's the

  465. metaphor that comes to mind for me I had

  466. a kid this week who was trying out for a

  467. sports team at their school and as a

  468. parent that's always you know we felt

  469. pretty good because this kid played that

  470. sport last year at the same school and

  471. you know they're not the best on the

  472. team they're not the worst on the team

  473. and you know being in the middle is

  474. where W Rocks live so we're comfortable

  475. with

  476. that so we felt pretty good first day I

  477. picked this kid up from tryouts you know

  478. it's just first day of tryouts I say how

  479. did it go and they're telling me it was

  480. pretty good and we're I was asking them

  481. how many kids were better than you how

  482. many kids were worse than you you know

  483. where do you think you stacked we were

  484. we were feeling good we were positive we

  485. were optimistic we were feeling good but

  486. the next day I picked that kid up was

  487. the day where you knew where you found

  488. out and this kid got in the car and my

  489. wife had already said have them call me

  490. if they made the team but if they didn't

  491. make the team don't have them call

  492. me not because she didn't want to talk

  493. to him but because you would to let him

  494. breathe a little bit so this kid gets in

  495. the car and I'm like

  496. so and they said oh I made the team I

  497. said that's awesome tell me about it

  498. they said' oh the coach pulled everyone

  499. aside the coach looked at me and said

  500. hey you made the

  501. team we were already feeling good about

  502. it we were already pretty optimistic but

  503. there's something different when the

  504. coach says to

  505. you you're

  506. in friends do you know if you're born

  507. again in Jesus that's what's going to

  508. happen for you on the day of Jud

  509. judement you know you're forgiven right

  510. you know you believe you feel good about

  511. it you know God loves you you know God

  512. has a place for you but on the day of

  513. judgment is the moment where he will

  514. look at you and

  515. say welcome

  516. in this is what I'm really trying to say

  517. listen we have to acknowledge that the

  518. reason why the doctrine of judgment sits

  519. so poorly with us not the only reason

  520. but the major reason is because most of

  521. us have lived privileged lives where

  522. judgment doesn't seem

  523. necessary because the truth is when

  524. you've been

  525. hurt you know that if God loves you at

  526. all there has to be a reckoning you know

  527. when doing the right thing costs you

  528. that if God loves you at all there has

  529. to be an

  530. accounting the day of judgment is a

  531. doctrine of encouragement because God is

  532. saying to us I see you I see them and

  533. welcome

  534. in but that leads me to my third point

  535. which is to say that the point of this

  536. passage is not just to give us truth and

  537. not just to give us truth in a way that

  538. encourages us but is to remind us that

  539. the trajectory of all of our Lives is to

  540. this

  541. day everyone here whether we realize it

  542. or not is moving towards this day

  543. everyone here is moving towards judgment

  544. that is certain and awful and eternal

  545. everyone here is moving this

  546. way which means that what Paul also has

  547. in mind is not just the people he can

  548. encourage with the good news of judgment

  549. but those he's worried will not hear

  550. good news on the day of judgment those

  551. who are not finding them M themselves in

  552. Jesus that's why he says this to the

  553. Thessalonians at the very end in verse

  554. 11 and 12 he says to this end we always

  555. pray for you that our God may make you

  556. worthy of his calling and may fulfill

  557. every resolve for good and every work of

  558. Faith by his power so that the name of

  559. our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you

  560. and you in him according to the grace of

  561. our God and the Lord Jesus Christ he's

  562. saying we're praying for you that God's

  563. glory would shine through you why

  564. because Paul had given his entire life

  565. to this idea that the day of judgment is

  566. coming for everyone which means the day

  567. of Escape is

  568. now so I'm praying that you will

  569. continue to fight that you will continue

  570. to follow Jesus that you'll continue to

  571. live out your faith so that those around

  572. you might one day have the same

  573. encouragement you have of the day of

  574. judgment he has in mind here that one of

  575. the reasons the Bible talks so much

  576. about judgment is because the entire

  577. Bible is what God has done to help you

  578. escape

  579. judgment in fact you could put it this

  580. way that in the Bible there are two

  581. great days of

  582. judgment one is the day we've spent most

  583. of our time this weekend talking about

  584. the day when we die and we stand before

  585. God the final day of judgment we give an

  586. account for our Our Lives we answer for

  587. our sins for our

  588. victims but the other day of

  589. judgment was the day that Jesus Christ

  590. the son of God went to the

  591. cross on our

  592. behalf the other day of judgment was the

  593. day that God made him to borrow from

  594. Paul in another book made him who knew

  595. no sin to become sin in order that we

  596. might become the righteousness of God

  597. when Jes Jesus the perfect sinless man

  598. went to the cross and came up under the

  599. Judgment of God when Jesus became

  600. separated from the father so that he

  601. would cry out on the cross my God my God

  602. why have you forsaken me when Jesus

  603. underwent the thing that makes hell hell

  604. because he became your sin and mine in

  605. order that he might die in our place in

  606. order that when he rose from the dead he

  607. might say to us there are two days of

  608. judgment choose with which one you

  609. want the one where you speak for

  610. you or the one where I speak for

  611. you so if you're here and you're a

  612. Christian listen what the Bible is

  613. saying to you here in this passage is to

  614. find encouragement in the day of

  615. judgment but also to be sobered up by

  616. the idea that the day of judgment one

  617. day waits for every friend every family

  618. member every colleague that your prayer

  619. would be God do in and through me in the

  620. things I say and the things I do and the

  621. things I don't do in the transformation

  622. of my life do something that gets their

  623. attention do something that helps them

  624. to see the day of judgment when Jesus

  625. was on the cross before they see the day

  626. of judgment where they answer to

  627. you but friends if you're

  628. here and you do not have a relationship

  629. with Jesus I want you to see that In

  630. this passage the dividing line on the

  631. day of judgment is not who's good and

  632. who's bad who came to church and who

  633. didn't not any of that this is the

  634. dividing line according to 2

  635. Thessalonians it says this in verse 7

  636. and to Grant relief to you who are

  637. afflicted as well as to us when the Lord

  638. Jesus is revealed from heaven with his

  639. mighty angels and flaming fire

  640. inflicting Vengeance on those who do not

  641. know God and on those who do not obey

  642. the gospel of our Lord Jesus the

  643. dividing line of human history

  644. is what you do with

  645. Jesus Oh for a generation of Christians

  646. who believe that more than thinking that

  647. the dividing line of human history is

  648. who votes Republican and who votes

  649. Democrat the dividing line of human

  650. history is what you do with Jesus the

  651. day of judgment is certain for us all

  652. won't you today decide that your day of

  653. judgment is when Jesus died for your

  654. sins receive his forgiveness and his

  655. mercy and his

  656. grace and be included in his kingdom so

  657. that one day you don't fear the end but

  658. you see it as the day where God himself

  659. because of Jesus will say I see you I

  660. see them and welcome in let me pray for

  661. us father

  662. God thank you for the doctrine of

  663. judgment thank you for telling us the

  664. truth thank you for warning

  665. us a Bible that didn't speak of judgment

  666. wouldn't be because judgment isn't

  667. coming it would be because you didn't

  668. love us enough to tell

  669. us God help us as Christians to pick up

  670. this truth that we have put down to be

  671. reminded that our hope that you see our

  672. our our obedience that you see what

  673. we're doing is in the day of judgment

  674. Our Hope of Justice for those who have

  675. heard us is in the day of judgment that

  676. all that is waiting for us is to hear

  677. welcome

  678. it but oh God for those who are here

  679. apart from

  680. Jesus that they might today turn to him

  681. before they stand before you in his name

  682. we pray amen
