  1. Matthew 1

  2. 12-2 and after the deportation to

  3. Babylon Janiah was the father of shiel

  4. and shtil the father of zerubabel and

  5. zerubabel the father of abud and abud

  6. the father of elim and elim the father

  7. of Azor and Azor the father of zadok and

  8. zadok the father of Akim and aim the

  9. father of elod and elod the father of

  10. elad AR and elazar the father of Matten

  11. and Matten the father of Jacob and Jacob

  12. the father of Joseph the husband of Mary

  13. of whom Jesus was born who is called

  14. Christ so all the generations from

  15. Abraham to David were 14 generations and

  16. from David to the deportation to Babylon

  17. 14 generations and from the deportation

  18. to Babylon to the Christ 14 Generations

  19. now the birth of Jesus Christ took place

  20. in this way when his mother Mary had

  21. been betrothed to Joseph before they

  22. came together she was found to be with

  23. child from the Holy Spirit and her

  24. husband Joseph being a just man and

  25. unwilling to put her to shame resolved

  26. to divorce her quietly but as he

  27. considered these things behold an angel

  28. of the Lord appeared to him in a dream

  29. saying Joseph son of David do not fear

  30. to take Mary as your wife for that which

  31. is conceived in her is from the Holy

  32. Spirit she will bear a son and you shall

  33. call his name Jesus for he will save his

  34. people from their

  35. sins all this took place to fulfill what

  36. the Lord had spoken by the

  37. prophet behold the Virgin shall conceive

  38. and bear a son and they shall call his

  39. name

  40. Emmanuel which means god with us when

  41. Joseph woke from his sleep he did as the

  42. angel of the Lord commanded him he took

  43. his wife but knew her not until she had

  44. given birth to a son and he called his

  45. name

  46. Jesus hey everybody good morning and

  47. welcome to CCC uh really really glad

  48. you're here so uh thanks for coming uh

  49. before I get started I want to tell you

  50. about a Ministry that my wife Karen and

  51. I are really excited about it's actually

  52. a Ministry that Jim College started

  53. before he retired and we feel so

  54. strongly about it that we decided to

  55. take it over and this ministry has one

  56. goal we only want to do one thing and

  57. this is what we want to do we're going

  58. to make grandparenting great again okay

  59. that's it that's it all

  60. right uh in all seriousness we uh have

  61. what we call the grandparents huddle and

  62. we meet uh once a month the first Sunday

  63. of the month over in the gym at the

  64. 10:00 hour and we do it for a serious

  65. reason one we want to make we want to be

  66. intentional about grandparenting and the

  67. reason I'm so passionate about it is

  68. because it finally hit me that being a

  69. grandfather is my last big role and I

  70. want to do it well so if you're a

  71. grandparent I want to invite you to the

  72. grandparent huddle if you have a

  73. grandparent that goes to this church or

  74. that lives in this area invite them you

  75. can get more information out at the next

  76. steps area but uh let's do it together

  77. let's make grandparenting great again

  78. all right thanks for letting me have a

  79. little fun with that all right we are in

  80. the third week of our Advent series and

  81. the word Advent implies

  82. anticipation waiting and waiting can be

  83. hard that's why we have this mock

  84. waiting room set up here and if you've

  85. ever been in a waiting room and and I

  86. have one of things that makes it hard is

  87. that you you don't know what's going on

  88. on the other side of the door and when

  89. I've been in a waiting room there have

  90. been times where I've just been longing

  91. for somebody to tell me something tell

  92. me anything because silence can be the

  93. toughest part about waiting the title of

  94. this message is waiting in

  95. silence waiting in silence we're looking

  96. at Matthew chapter 1 if you want to turn

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  97. there if you have your Bibles you can

  98. turn to Matthew chapter 1 if you want to

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  99. use one of our Bibles it's on page 757

  100. or you can just wait for the verses that

  101. come up on the screen in Matthew chapter

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  102. 1 the passage that we had read to you uh

  103. is really the story of the birth of

  104. Jesus but before it gets to the story of

  105. the birth of Jesus there's a

  106. genealogy a list of names and we

  107. actually spared you the first 11 verses

  108. of the genealogy you know uh the Old

  109. King James Bible which is the Bible I

  110. grew up with uh doesn't say

  111. that like Abraham was the father of

  112. Isaac Isaac was the father of Jacob it

  113. it uses the word begat like Abraham

  114. begat Isaac Isaac begat Jacob there are

  115. a lot of begats here there are 42 to be

  116. exact 42 Generations

  117. 42 names and we we left out we left the

  118. last 14 and read those 14 to you not

  119. just to give you a taste of the

  120. genealogy

  121. uh but during that those 14 Generations

  122. there were no prophets in Israel now if

  123. you remember a prophet is somebody who

  124. stands between God and people and the

  125. prophet would give the message of God to

  126. the people with no prophets that meant

  127. God went silent and he was silent for

  128. 400 years through all 14

  129. Generations now you have to be careful

  130. with the Silence of God because it's

  131. easy to think when God goes silent

  132. whether it's in the Bible or in your

  133. life that he is not paying attention

  134. that he he doesn't really care but I

  135. always think of the Book of Job you know

  136. the Book of Job is uh known as a book

  137. about suffering and it is but it's not

  138. just a book about suffering it's also a

  139. book about waiting and waiting in

  140. silence because the Book of Job starts

  141. with like a peak behind the curtain at a

  142. conversation that job is not privy to

  143. it's a conversation between God and

  144. Satan and now God says to Satan have you

  145. seen my servant job it's obvious that

  146. God loves job and Satan says to God does

  147. job love you for nothing you have filled

  148. his life with blessings you've made his

  149. life easy if his life ever gets hard he

  150. will curse you to your face and what

  151. Satan is saying is God no one loves you

  152. for you you're like a rich man who has

  153. to buy his friends like as long as you

  154. are piling on blessings to somebody they

  155. feel like they love you but if you ever

  156. remove those

  157. blessings they will hate you and God

  158. says job loves me for me and Satan

  159. says want to bet and I'm paraphrasing

  160. that all right and then what happens is

  161. that God gives permission for Satan to

  162. make job's life hard and if you know the

  163. story you know that's a gross

  164. understatement his life gets incredibly

  165. hard The Book of Job is 42 chapters long

  166. God does not speak until chapter

  167. 38 for all that time he is silent and

  168. job thinks that God is not paying

  169. attention that God doesn't care but he

  170. couldn't have been more

  171. wrong because when you're reading the

  172. story you realize that all of Heaven is

  173. like on the edge of their seats watching

  174. everything job does wondering if job

  175. will be the one who loves God just for

  176. being

  177. god listen waiting is hard and if you

  178. are here right now and you feel like you

  179. are waiting in

  180. silence then I want you to know this

  181. message is for you I told you last week

  182. that God loves patterns and there's a

  183. pattern In this passage we're looking at

  184. all right here are my three points and

  185. they're pretty simple so you know where

  186. I'm going I want to talk about when why

  187. and how when God goes silent why God

  188. goes silent and then finally how God

  189. breaks his silence first when God goes

  190. silent when I was a kid and I would uh

  191. read the gospel of Matthew when I

  192. started Matthew chapter 1 I would just

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  193. blow through all those names I wouldn't

  194. even really look at them because they

  195. seem completely irrelevant at least to

  196. me but the Bible's inspired by God so

  197. that means everything's in here for a

  198. reason and that means the genealogy is

  199. there for a reason if for no other

  200. reason to let you know that you aren't

  201. the only one who has waited on God and

  202. waited in

  203. silence but Zach told us in the first

  204. message that he gave in this series that

  205. waiting on God is that gap between god

  206. making a promise and God keeping that

  207. promise however long that time is that's

  208. waiting all right in in Genesis chapter

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  209. 15 God makes a promise to a guy named

  210. Abraham who is the first name on this

  211. list and the promise to Abraham was that

  212. someone was going to come from Abraham's

  213. bloodline and through that one person

  214. all the world would be blessed and that

  215. promise was fulfilled with Jesus but in

  216. between Abraham and Jesus is 2,000 years

  217. 42

  218. Generations that were

  219. waiting now there are times in my life

  220. where I have been desperate for God to

  221. to break his silence to let me know what

  222. was going on to let me know what he

  223. wanted me to do

  224. but waiting on God particularly waiting

  225. in silence is also

  226. trusting because the gap between god

  227. making a promise and God keeping a

  228. promise isn't just

  229. waiting it's

  230. trusting one of the things that Zach has

  231. mentioned uh that I don't know if I ever

  232. heard anyone else mention before Zach

  233. talks about God's

  234. resume uh and The more I've thought

  235. about it the The more I've loved that

  236. idea because a resume is something you

  237. put together that tells somebody what

  238. you have done in the past so they know

  239. what they can expect in the

  240. future God has a resume and when I am

  241. waiting for God particularly waiting in

  242. silence I need to go someplace where I

  243. can look at his resume and one of the

  244. places I can go is this list of names

  245. these 42 names of people who some of

  246. them some of these names I can't even

  247. pronounce some of them I know I

  248. pronounce wrong and they all these 42

  249. names until God fulfills his promise to

  250. a man named

  251. Joseph and that's my

  252. name Joseph A man whose friends might

  253. have called him Joe like my friends call

  254. me Joe and I'm reminded that when I'm

  255. waiting on God I'm waiting in between

  256. when God makes a promise when he keeps a

  257. promise

  258. and I can trust him because of his

  259. resume because the greatest promise he

  260. ever made he fulfilled in the coming of

  261. Jesus that brings me to my second point

  262. is why why God goes silent I can think

  263. of three reasons why God makes us wait

  264. waiting does something inside of us

  265. waiting does something inside of others

  266. and waiting does something for the world

  267. first waiting does something inside of

  268. us I've been had the privilege of being

  269. a father of three I have a son named

  270. Jeremy and two daughters Rachel and

  271. Becca and I got to watch them go through

  272. all the stages from infant to toddler to

  273. teen to young adult now to full-fledged

  274. adults with their own families and I'm a

  275. grandfather watching my grandchildren go

  276. through the same stages and at every

  277. stage there are crucial things for

  278. someone to learn and there some of those

  279. lessons have been I've been able to

  280. apply to my spiritual life as well I I

  281. think of when my son Jeremy when he was

  282. about two or three he fell and needed to

  283. go get

  284. stitches he actually fell because he was

  285. trying to fill his squirt gun and the

  286. only water source he could reach was the

  287. toilet which I applaud his Ingenuity but

  288. that's about all I applaud there but

  289. while he was trying to fill it he

  290. slipped and he hit his head on the

  291. porcelain and I had to take him to the

  292. emergency room to get stitches and

  293. because he was so young they put him in

  294. what they called the papoose where they

  295. just strapped him down like this and he

  296. was scared and I remember looking at him

  297. and trying to calm him down just saying

  298. Jeremy it's going to be okay it's going

  299. to be okay it's going to be okay but

  300. when that doctor uh put the shot of

  301. Xylocaine into his eye and it stung

  302. Jeremy looked at me with eyes full of

  303. betrayal and he said Daddy it's not okay

  304. it's not okay right it broke my heart

  305. because there's no way I could get him

  306. to understand that what was happening

  307. was for his

  308. good it was for his

  309. benefit I've watched uh my toddlers and

  310. my grandchildren go through the the

  311. painful process of learning to wait you

  312. know toddlers are uh

  313. they want everything like right now like

  314. if they don't get their snack now they

  315. lose their mind right no toddler is born

  316. with

  317. patience but if a toddler doesn't learn

  318. to wait to develop patience they don't

  319. become like well-rounded adults with

  320. just a little bit of lack of patience

  321. humans are are way too complex for that

  322. patience is connected to all kinds of

  323. stuff if they don't develop patience

  324. they won't don't develop trust or

  325. gratitude or unselfishness or the

  326. ability to love or hope or perseverance

  327. there are all kinds of things that are

  328. connected to waiting learning to wait

  329. and I I was thinking about myself and

  330. that I think technology has not done me

  331. any favors with my patience because

  332. technology puts things immediate again

  333. and when like what if I'm working on my

  334. computer and that little spinning like

  335. wheel comes up that's multicolored I

  336. have to fight my toddler urge to lose my

  337. mind while I'm waiting for my computer

  338. to start working again if I'm driving

  339. around town and I'm stuck behind

  340. somebody who's driving below the speed

  341. limit I always say something like I

  342. don't roll down my window and say it I

  343. just say it to myself you know like if

  344. if you are someone who drives below the

  345. speed limit and town and I've been stuck

  346. behind you I've I've talked about

  347. you but I wonder if when God makes me

  348. wait even in silence I wonder if it's

  349. not unlike Jeremy with

  350. stitches that God just cannot make me

  351. understand that what is happening is for

  352. my good and for my

  353. benefit and I just don't get

  354. it waiting does something inside of us

  355. waiting also does something inside of

  356. others you know it's hard to have

  357. perfect timing for anything uh the one

  358. time I remember wanting to have per the

  359. timing to be perfect was when I was

  360. getting engaged uh to my wife Karen and

  361. I had it all planned out in my head and

  362. it was going to be a surprise to her and

  363. we the idea was that we're going to

  364. drive from the college we were going to

  365. to her parents house I'd asked her dad's

  366. permission and IID told them that I was

  367. going to uh ask her to marry me that

  368. night when we got there and so I had

  369. that in my mind we're driving it took

  370. about five hours to drive from our

  371. College to Karen's parents home and uh I

  372. made a couple of bad turns and so we

  373. were running late at least for my

  374. schedule and then uh Karen leaned over

  375. cuz she saw our gas my gas gauge and she

  376. said hey should we stop and get gas and

  377. I said I know when I need gas right and

  378. I could just see my perfect night

  379. crumbling around the edges because I had

  380. hurt her feelings I had to try to make

  381. up to her because I was trying to make

  382. this night perfect we ended up getting

  383. we got engaged we made it I didn't need

  384. gas right I will finish that story

  385. though that uh the next morning my

  386. future father-in-law decided to do

  387. something nice for me and he uh took

  388. took my car to go get gas he ran out of

  389. gas a half mile from his from his I had

  390. to walk back that's the way my

  391. relationship started with my

  392. father-in-law it's hard to have perfect

  393. timing right all I had to do was I was

  394. trying to have perfect timing for just

  395. two people me and Karen there's a

  396. passage in Galatians Galatians 4:4

    Galatians 4:4

  397. listen to this it says but when the

  398. fullness of time had

  399. come God sent forth his son born of

  400. woman born under the

  401. law but when the fullness of time had

  402. come God sent his son at just the right

  403. time with perfect time for Who and the

  404. answer is for

  405. everyone for

  406. everyone I mean it's it's incredible all

  407. the the complexities that God has to all

  408. the variables God has to take into

  409. consideration when he does anything I I

  410. always think of a of a Rubik's Cube I

  411. like this even though I I can't solve it

  412. and I know some of you can solve it and

  413. are itching to get up here and solve it

  414. but uh one of the things I like about a

  415. Rubik's Cube is because it reminds me

  416. that things are more

  417. complex than I think like I if I think

  418. of one row and I move it it actually

  419. impacts everything else I think that's

  420. the way God has to he's not just

  421. concerned about you he's and he's not

  422. just concerned about the people that you

  423. know but everybody around you and then

  424. for multiple Generations right because

  425. the only reason you even exist is

  426. because you're great great great

  427. grandfather ran into your great great

  428. great grandmother in some weird way and

  429. they made a connection and they decided

  430. to get married and have kids and then it

  431. happened again and again and again and

  432. then you're here right because even the

  433. smallest things in the past have

  434. impacted the present and the Very

  435. smallest things that are happening right

  436. now are impacting the future you realize

  437. that so when God is making you wait is

  438. not just doing something inside of you

  439. it's actually doing something for

  440. everyone around you people you know and

  441. people you don't and generations to come

  442. who don't even exist

  443. yet listen when when God makes you wait

  444. one of the reasons he does it is it's

  445. it's doing something inside of you but

  446. it's also doing something inside of

  447. others and finally God is doing

  448. something for the world one of the

  449. things that theologians and

  450. historians who Ponder Galatians 4:4 that

    Galatians 4:4

  451. in the fullness of time at just the

  452. right time God sent his son into the

  453. world one of the things that historians

  454. have noticed is that there are some

  455. things that happened in the first

  456. century that had never happened before

  457. in the history of the world the first

  458. was peace the Roman Empire had

  459. established peace across the entire

  460. Empire was one of the only times the

  461. entire known world was at peace they

  462. called it pox Romana right the Peace of

  463. Rome second thing is that Rome decided

  464. to build a network of roads to connect

  465. the empire unlike anything that had ever

  466. been done before that's where the phrase

  467. comes all roads lead to Rome and finally

  468. there was a universal language where

  469. Greek had infiltrated the entire Empire

  470. so that everyone knew Greek here's a

  471. question how are people going to know

  472. that

  473. Emmanuel God With Us was born in the

  474. Backwater Town of

  475. Bethlehem I'll tell you

  476. they'll travel roads that go to the

  477. furthest reaches of the Empire they're

  478. going to speak in a language that

  479. everyone knows and they're going to do

  480. it when the world is at peace for one of

  481. the only times listen when God is making

  482. you

  483. wait do not

  484. underestimate all that he is doing in

  485. that time all right that BR brings me to

  486. the last point which is uh

  487. what happens when God how God breaks his

  488. silence look at this this is the story

  489. of jesus' birth let me read it this is

  490. verses 18- 25 I love this passage it

  491. says now the birth of Jesus Christ took

  492. place in this way when his mother Mary

  493. had been betrothed to Joseph before they

  494. came together she was found to be a

  495. child from the Holy Spirit and her

  496. husband Joseph being a just man and

  497. unwilling to put her to shame resolved

  498. to divorce her quietly but as he

  499. considered these things behold an angel

  500. of the Lord appeared to him in a dream

  501. saying Joseph son of David do not fear

  502. to take Mary as your wife for that which

  503. is conceived in her is from the Holy

  504. Spirit she will bear a son you shall

  505. call his name Jesus for he shall save

  506. his people from their sins all this took

  507. place to fulfill what the Lord had

  508. spoken by the prophet behold the Virgin

  509. shall conceive and bear a son and they

  510. shall call his name Emmanuel which means

  511. god with us when Joseph woke from sleep

  512. he did as the angel of the Lord

  513. commanded him he took his wife but knew

  514. her not until she had given birth to a

  515. son and he called his name

  516. Jesus so when God breaks his silence he

  517. does so

  518. suddenly suddenly he he's not like you

  519. know I I get notified by ups that a

  520. package is coming sometime between 10

  521. and 3 kind of to give me an idea of what

  522. that's not the way God does does it 400

  523. years of silence and all of a sudden a

  524. young woman named Mary turns around and

  525. there's an angel who has a message for

  526. her from God 400 years of silence and a

  527. man named Joseph goes to bed and dream

  528. in his dream an angel appears to him

  529. with a message from God this is the

  530. thing if you are waiting for God in

  531. silence one moment you will be waiting

  532. and the next moment you won't be when

  533. God breaks his silence he does it

  534. suddenly the second thing is when God

  535. breaks his silence it is unexpected this

  536. this whole story is full of surprises I

  537. if you noticed but it's crazy it's it's

  538. full of of dreams and angels and a a

  539. virgin and a baby and a star and wise

  540. men and Shepherds I mean no one expected

  541. any of those things it wasn't what

  542. people were expecting it wasn't what

  543. people were praying for and this is the

  544. thing when God breaks his silence he may

  545. not give you the answer that you were

  546. expecting or even that you were praying

  547. for and that's okay because when God

  548. breaks his silence it is

  549. absolutely

  550. wonderful because it's beyond anything

  551. you could

  552. imagine look at verse 23 he says behold

  553. the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son

  554. and they shall call his name Emmanuel

  555. which means god with us God didn't just

  556. speak he came and Jesus came he said

  557. call his name Jesus for he will save his

  558. people from their sins listen if you are

  559. waiting for God to do something in your

  560. life and you feel like you've been

  561. waiting in silence for a while don't

  562. miss what God wants to do in you and

  563. through you in the midst of this time

  564. but also remember that in between god

  565. making a promise and God keeping a

  566. promise is when you are waiting and

  567. sometimes that's in silence but when God

  568. breaks his silence it will happen

  569. suddenly it may be completely

  570. unexpected but it will be more

  571. wonderful than you can imagine because

  572. when God breaks his silence it's always

  573. always worth the wait would you pray

  574. with me

  575. Father in heaven we come to you and I'm

  576. so grateful for this passage even for

  577. these names that I can scarcely

  578. pronounce because they remind me of

  579. people that waited in silence but you

  580. had not forgotten them just as you have

  581. not forgotten us I pray for every person

  582. here that you would remind them of Your

  583. Love of your resume

  584. that you are

  585. faithful and I pray that you would speak

  586. and break your silence soon for them

  587. pray this in Jesus name amen
