  1. 00:00:01:10 - 00:00:04:22

  2. Genesis 16 one through 16.

  3. 00:00:05:25 - 00:00:08:57

  4. Now Sarai, Abraham's wife, had borne him

  5. no children.

  6. 00:00:09:19 - 00:00:12:49

  7. She had a female Egyptian servant

  8. whose name was Hagar.

  9. 00:00:13:09 - 00:00:15:11

  10. And Sarai said to Abraham.

  11. 00:00:15:11 - 00:00:18:45

  12. Behold, now the Lord has prevented me

  13. from bearing children.

  14. 00:00:19:09 - 00:00:20:58

  15. Go in to my servant.

  16. 00:00:20:58 - 00:00:24:04

  17. It may be that

  18. I shall obtain children by her.

  19. 00:00:24:32 - 00:00:27:32

  20. And Abraham, listen to the voice of Sarai.

  21. 00:00:27:41 - 00:00:31:17

  22. So after Abraham had lived

  23. ten years in the land of Canaan,

  24. 00:00:31:28 - 00:00:36:32

  25. Sarai, Abraham's wife, took Hagar

  26. the Egyptian, her servant,

  27. 00:00:36:39 - 00:00:39:41

  28. and gave her to Abraham,

  29. her husband, as a wife.

  30. 00:00:39:42 - 00:00:42:42

  31. And he went into Hagar, and she conceived.

  32. 00:00:42:49 - 00:00:47:15

  33. And when she saw that she had conceived,

  34. she looked with contempt on her mistress.

  35. 00:00:47:37 - 00:00:51:54

  36. And Sarai said to Abraham,

  37. May the wrong done to me be on you.

  38. 00:00:52:12 - 00:00:54:34

  39. I gave my servant to your embrace.

  40. 00:00:54:34 - 00:00:58:46

  41. And when she saw that she had conceived,

  42. she looked on me with contempt.

  43. 00:00:59:02 - 00:01:02:00

  44. May the Lord judge between you and me.

  45. 00:01:02:00 - 00:01:06:41

  46. But Abraham said to Sarai, behold,

  47. your servant is in your power.

  48. 00:01:06:57 - 00:01:08:57

  49. Do to her as you please.

  50. 00:01:08:57 - 00:01:12:31

  51. Then, sir, I dealt harshly with her,

  52. and she fled from her.

  53. 00:01:12:55 - 00:01:16:49

  54. The angel of the Lord found her

  55. by a spring of water in the wilderness.

  56. 00:01:16:54 - 00:01:19:12

  57. The spring on the way to shore.

  58. 00:01:19:12 - 00:01:23:53

  59. And he said, Hagar, servant of Sarai,

  60. where have you come from?

  61. 00:01:23:53 - 00:01:25:26

  62. And where are you going?

  63. 00:01:25:26 - 00:01:28:14

  64. She said, I'm fleeing from my mistress.

  65. 00:01:28:14 - 00:01:29:22

  66. Sarai.

  67. 00:01:29:22 - 00:01:33:59

  68. The angel of the Lord said to her,

  69. return to your mistress and submit to her.

  70. 00:01:34:26 - 00:01:38:29

  71. The angel of the Lord also said to her,

  72. I will surely multiply

  73. 00:01:38:29 - 00:01:42:04

  74. your offspring, so that they cannot

  75. be numbered for multitude.

  76. 00:01:42:22 - 00:01:46:02

  77. And the angel of the Lord said to her,

  78. behold, you are pregnant,

  79. 00:01:46:02 - 00:01:47:33

  80. and shall bear a son.

  81. 00:01:47:33 - 00:01:52:14

  82. You shall call his name Ishmael, because

  83. the Lord has listened to your affliction.

  84. 00:01:52:43 - 00:01:55:05

  85. He shall be a wild donkey of a man.

  86. 00:01:55:05 - 00:01:58:24

  87. His hand against everyone,

  88. and everyone's hand against him.

  89. 00:01:58:44 - 00:02:02:13

  90. And he shall dwell over

  91. against all his kinsmen.

  92. 00:02:02:24 - 00:02:05:09

  93. So she called the name of the Lord

  94. who spoke to her.

  95. 00:02:05:09 - 00:02:06:55

  96. You are a God of seeing.

  97. 00:02:06:55 - 00:02:11:07

  98. For she said, truly here

  99. I have seen him who looks after me.

  100. 00:02:11:34 - 00:02:15:01

  101. Therefore the well was called dear Leroy.

  102. 00:02:15:15 - 00:02:20:14

  103. It lies between Kadesh and Bharat,

  104. and Hagar bore Abraham a son,

  105. 00:02:20:19 - 00:02:24:41

  106. and Abraham called the name of his son,

  107. whom Hagar bore Ishmael.

  108. 00:02:25:10 - 00:02:29:35

  109. Abraham was 86 years old

  110. when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abraham.

  111. 00:02:34:26 - 00:02:35:23

  112. Well, good morning and

  113. 00:02:35:23 - 00:02:38:38

  114. welcome to the weekly gathering of Christ

  115. Community Chapel.

  116. 00:02:38:39 - 00:02:39:55

  117. My name is Zach.

  118. 00:02:39:55 - 00:02:43:06

  119. I'm one of the pastors here, and I'm

  120. so glad you're with us.

  121. 00:02:43:06 - 00:02:45:58

  122. This father's Day weekend.

  123. 00:02:45:58 - 00:02:49:26

  124. I'm excited to continue our sermon series

  125. for the summer.

  126. 00:02:49:27 - 00:02:53:06

  127. We're in week four of a ten week series

  128. where we're looking

  129. 00:02:53:06 - 00:02:58:06

  130. at God, acting in human history

  131. through the family of Abraham,

  132. 00:02:58:06 - 00:03:01:57

  133. making very big promises and keeping them.

  134. 00:03:01:57 - 00:03:06:17

  135. We're actually calling this series

  136. Promises Made, Promises Kept,

  137. 00:03:06:17 - 00:03:10:13

  138. and our hope is over

  139. the course of this summer that by studying

  140. 00:03:10:29 - 00:03:16:43

  141. these stories, we would develop confidence

  142. and an affection for a God

  143. 00:03:16:43 - 00:03:21:54

  144. who is acting in human history

  145. by making promises and keeping them.

  146. 00:03:22:25 - 00:03:25:21

  147. But I do think there's a danger

  148. 00:03:25:21 - 00:03:28:32

  149. the bigger God gets in these stories.

  150. 00:03:29:08 - 00:03:32:20

  151. The bigger

  152. the promises get, the more incredible

  153. 00:03:32:20 - 00:03:36:58

  154. he is and the incredible things

  155. he does in the lives of people.

  156. 00:03:36:59 - 00:03:42:03

  157. There's a danger that for some of us,

  158. if we come in this weekend

  159. 00:03:42:03 - 00:03:45:10

  160. and our stories

  161. are not in a great chapter,

  162. 00:03:46:14 - 00:03:49:14

  163. if we come in, a little cold,

  164. 00:03:49:45 - 00:03:53:49

  165. feeling guilty, ashamed, dirty, distant,

  166. 00:03:54:32 - 00:03:59:08

  167. then a big god like, the bigger he gets,

  168. the more incredible the things he does.

  169. 00:03:59:08 - 00:04:02:07

  170. The smaller we feel.

  171. 00:04:02:20 - 00:04:05:11

  172. The more incredible

  173. he is, the more distance

  174. 00:04:05:11 - 00:04:09:23

  175. we feel between him and us

  176. so that we might say,

  177. 00:04:09:23 - 00:04:14:21

  178. well, God does make promises

  179. and keep them to some people.

  180. 00:04:14:46 - 00:04:18:27

  181. I mean, the way we would say

  182. some people have money

  183. 00:04:19:09 - 00:04:24:23

  184. or some people have good marriages,

  185. healthy families, success.

  186. 00:04:24:23 - 00:04:28:15

  187. That doesn't mean that I do

  188. or that you do.

  189. 00:04:28:17 - 00:04:32:33

  190. The danger is that we would feel like

  191. God is doing incredible things

  192. 00:04:32:33 - 00:04:36:41

  193. in the lives of other people,

  194. but because of our stories,

  195. 00:04:36:41 - 00:04:40:58

  196. our decisions,

  197. that couldn't be true of us.

  198. 00:04:41:30 - 00:04:45:01

  199. So we want to do is kind of hit pause

  200. a little bit and say, well,

  201. 00:04:45:01 - 00:04:46:09

  202. hold on a second.

  203. 00:04:46:09 - 00:04:50:30

  204. Is God still faithful to his promises?

  205. 00:04:50:53 - 00:04:52:55

  206. When we are unfaithful,

  207. 00:04:53:58 - 00:04:54:49

  208. what happens to

  209. 00:04:54:49 - 00:04:58:48

  210. God's promises

  211. when we make a mess of things?

  212. 00:04:59:02 - 00:05:02:02

  213. Does he change? Do they?

  214. 00:05:02:18 - 00:05:04:53

  215. That's the question

  216. we're exploring this weekend.

  217. 00:05:04:53 - 00:05:07:24

  218. We're going to do that

  219. by looking at Genesis 16.

  220. 00:05:07:24 - 00:05:08:38

  221. So if you have a Bible

  222. 00:05:08:38 - 00:05:12:57

  223. and you want to follow along that way,

  224. would you open it to Genesis 16?

  225. 00:05:13:02 - 00:05:13:52

  226. Perfectly okay.

  227. 00:05:13:52 - 00:05:15:40

  228. To take out your phone or your tablet.

  229. 00:05:15:40 - 00:05:17:24

  230. Get there however you can.

  231. 00:05:17:24 - 00:05:18:48

  232. And the verses I reference

  233. 00:05:18:48 - 00:05:21:38

  234. are going to be on the screen behind me,

  235. so don't feel like you have to.

  236. 00:05:21:38 - 00:05:24:50

  237. But if you're here and you're new

  238. and maybe you didn't bring a Bible,

  239. 00:05:24:50 - 00:05:27:25

  240. you're not super familiar

  241. with your Bible with a Bible,

  242. 00:05:27:25 - 00:05:29:53

  243. but you would like to participate

  244. in that way.

  245. 00:05:29:53 - 00:05:32:33

  246. There are Bibles in the pew

  247. in front of you

  248. 00:05:32:33 - 00:05:36:17

  249. or in the back of the room in East Hall,

  250. and those are available for you.

  251. 00:05:36:17 - 00:05:39:05

  252. I actually preach from one of those Bibles

  253. so that I can tell you

  254. 00:05:39:05 - 00:05:41:18

  255. today's reading is on page ten and 11.

  256. 00:05:41:18 - 00:05:43:58

  257. And hey,

  258. if you're new to thinking about God,

  259. 00:05:43:58 - 00:05:46:52

  260. this week was the perfect week

  261. for you to come.

  262. 00:05:46:52 - 00:05:48:11

  263. I'm so glad you're here.

  264. 00:05:48:11 - 00:05:51:11

  265. I can't

  266. wait for what God has to say to you.

  267. 00:05:51:11 - 00:05:52:54

  268. Thanks for being here.

  269. 00:05:52:54 - 00:05:56:38

  270. I am going to use Genesis 16,

  271. of course, to answer the question,

  272. 00:05:56:38 - 00:06:00:19

  273. but I'm also going to weave

  274. in one metaphor throughout the sermon.

  275. 00:06:00:19 - 00:06:03:19

  276. It's a jewelry store, a metaphor.

  277. 00:06:03:19 - 00:06:07:06

  278. So my three points actually go like this

  279. I want to talk about the velvet,

  280. 00:06:08:07 - 00:06:09:39

  281. the diamond

  282. 00:06:09:39 - 00:06:13:54

  283. and the proposal, the velvet,

  284. the diamond and the proposal.

  285. 00:06:14:10 - 00:06:17:10

  286. All right, let's dive into point number

  287. one, the velvet.

  288. 00:06:18:02 - 00:06:20:55

  289. I hope you noticed when this passage

  290. was being read

  291. 00:06:20:55 - 00:06:23:56

  292. that it is a pretty ugly chapter.

  293. 00:06:24:49 - 00:06:27:56

  294. There are a lot of really dark things

  295. going on.

  296. 00:06:27:56 - 00:06:32:22

  297. Like if I told you

  298. that I had just consumed some content.

  299. 00:06:32:22 - 00:06:33:48

  300. And here's what it was about.

  301. 00:06:33:48 - 00:06:37:44

  302. It's about a couple struggling

  303. with infertility and turning

  304. 00:06:37:44 - 00:06:39:19

  305. against each other.

  306. 00:06:39:19 - 00:06:43:15

  307. It's about an affair with an employee

  308. that explodes.

  309. 00:06:43:15 - 00:06:46:36

  310. It's about two women

  311. who are rivals and a weak

  312. 00:06:46:36 - 00:06:49:41

  313. man who can't love either one of them.

  314. 00:06:49:41 - 00:06:52:27

  315. It's about chaos and dysfunction.

  316. 00:06:52:27 - 00:06:55:26

  317. You might think I'm

  318. describing a new series on HBO,

  319. 00:06:56:56 - 00:06:57:36

  320. but I'm not.

  321. 00:06:57:36 - 00:07:00:02

  322. That's Genesis 16 two.

  323. 00:07:00:02 - 00:07:02:51

  324. Two things

  325. I want you to see from Genesis 16.

  326. 00:07:02:51 - 00:07:07:38

  327. The first is that it's full of people

  328. hurting people.

  329. 00:07:08:16 - 00:07:10:04

  330. It's full of people hurting people.

  331. 00:07:10:04 - 00:07:13:21

  332. Like, for example,

  333. Sarai comes to her husband

  334. 00:07:13:22 - 00:07:16:43

  335. Abraham, who I will probably, by the way,

  336. refer to as Abraham and Sarah.

  337. 00:07:16:43 - 00:07:19:39

  338. Their names change in the next chapter.

  339. 00:07:19:39 - 00:07:24:02

  340. But, she comes to him and she says,

  341. hey, look, I know God's made this promise

  342. 00:07:24:02 - 00:07:27:12

  343. that we two elderly people

  344. who have struggled

  345. 00:07:27:12 - 00:07:30:59

  346. with infertility are going to have a baby,

  347. but it's just not happening.

  348. 00:07:30:59 - 00:07:32:02

  349. So I have an idea.

  350. 00:07:32:02 - 00:07:37:24

  351. There's a local custom that says,

  352. if you sleep with my slave girl

  353. 00:07:37:38 - 00:07:43:04

  354. and she gets pregnant, since we own her,

  355. we also own her baby.

  356. 00:07:43:04 - 00:07:46:38

  357. So if we do it that way,

  358. maybe she can give you a child

  359. 00:07:46:38 - 00:07:48:40

  360. and that can be our child.

  361. 00:07:48:40 - 00:07:51:02

  362. It's a monstrous thing to say to her

  363. husband.

  364. 00:07:51:02 - 00:07:54:05

  365. It's a monstrous idea to put in his brain.

  366. 00:07:54:05 - 00:07:57:38

  367. It's similar to Eve going to Adam

  368. and saying, here's some fruit,

  369. 00:07:57:38 - 00:07:59:40

  370. you should eat it.

  371. 00:07:59:40 - 00:08:02:13

  372. But of course, Abraham is hurting Sarah.

  373. 00:08:02:13 - 00:08:04:33

  374. I mean, I've been married

  375. for almost 20 years,

  376. 00:08:04:33 - 00:08:07:53

  377. and I know when Amy says to me,

  378. how do I look in this dress?

  379. 00:08:08:45 - 00:08:11:25

  380. There's a certain

  381. answer I'm expected to give.

  382. 00:08:12:57 - 00:08:13:59

  383. So when Sarah

  384. 00:08:13:59 - 00:08:17:12

  385. goes to Abraham and she says, hey,

  386. what do you think?

  387. 00:08:17:12 - 00:08:19:39

  388. Maybe

  389. you ought to sleep with my slave girl.

  390. 00:08:19:39 - 00:08:23:12

  391. I know she means it,

  392. but I think at least part of her is hoping

  393. 00:08:23:12 - 00:08:26:11

  394. he will say, absolutely not.

  395. 00:08:26:56 - 00:08:28:06

  396. I don't just want a child.

  397. 00:08:28:06 - 00:08:30:57

  398. I want a child with you, Sarah.

  399. 00:08:30:57 - 00:08:33:37

  400. Absolutely not. But he doesn't.

  401. 00:08:33:37 - 00:08:38:02

  402. And then Hagar, of course, the slave girl

  403. who's owned by another human being,

  404. 00:08:38:02 - 00:08:42:03

  405. which, of course is monstrous,

  406. has no say in any of this.

  407. 00:08:42:03 - 00:08:48:11

  408. Abraham and Sarah sin against her,

  409. hurt her by making her do this

  410. 00:08:48:11 - 00:08:52:48

  411. so that they can take the child

  412. if she gets pregnant.

  413. 00:08:52:48 - 00:08:55:59

  414. And then, of course, she's awful

  415. because eventually

  416. 00:08:55:59 - 00:08:59:35

  417. she does get pregnant

  418. and she throws that in Sarah's face.

  419. 00:08:59:35 - 00:09:04:44

  420. Look, you must be defective

  421. because I can give him a child.

  422. 00:09:04:44 - 00:09:10:08

  423. And then Abraham sins against both of them

  424. by being totally unable to lead

  425. 00:09:10:16 - 00:09:12:23

  426. either one of them. Here's the point.

  427. 00:09:12:23 - 00:09:16:09

  428. First thing you see in

  429. Genesis 16 is our world

  430. 00:09:16:22 - 00:09:19:57

  431. is full of people hurting people.

  432. 00:09:21:25 - 00:09:24:25

  433. What about you?

  434. 00:09:24:49 - 00:09:27:47

  435. Is your story like mine?

  436. 00:09:27:47 - 00:09:30:46

  437. Are there are some moments

  438. you wish you could get back?

  439. 00:09:31:19 - 00:09:34:19

  440. Some things you wish you hadn't said,

  441. 00:09:34:19 - 00:09:37:22

  442. some things you wish you hadn't done.

  443. 00:09:38:39 - 00:09:42:06

  444. The second thing I want you to see from

  445. Genesis 16, though, is not just that

  446. 00:09:42:06 - 00:09:46:16

  447. people hurt people,

  448. but hurting people hurt people.

  449. 00:09:46:57 - 00:09:51:11

  450. Because one way of reading Genesis 16

  451. is it's full of people hurting others.

  452. 00:09:51:11 - 00:09:54:22

  453. But the other thing is,

  454. there are three main figures in this story

  455. 00:09:54:22 - 00:09:57:21

  456. and they are all themselves hurting.

  457. 00:09:58:03 - 00:10:02:27

  458. Abraham is an elderly man

  459. who has yet to have a son,

  460. 00:10:02:45 - 00:10:05:07

  461. and I have to be honest,

  462. I hope you're okay with me saying this.

  463. 00:10:05:07 - 00:10:08:34

  464. When I read the story of Abraham,

  465. I often say to God, you know God.

  466. 00:10:08:34 - 00:10:12:51

  467. Infertility is one of the hardest things

  468. for any human being to walk through.

  469. 00:10:12:51 - 00:10:15:22

  470. I have friends who have been through

  471. that journey.

  472. 00:10:15:22 - 00:10:19:48

  473. It's incredibly painful and I can't help

  474. but feel like God in some ways.

  475. 00:10:19:48 - 00:10:23:55

  476. You intense to fight Abraham's pain

  477. because he had made his peace

  478. 00:10:23:55 - 00:10:25:23

  479. with not having a son.

  480. 00:10:25:23 - 00:10:27:52

  481. And then you come in

  482. and you go, you're going to have one.

  483. 00:10:27:52 - 00:10:30:12

  484. And every day wakes up going, is it today?

  485. 00:10:30:12 - 00:10:31:46

  486. Is it today? Is it today?

  487. 00:10:33:03 - 00:10:34:53

  488. Abraham is hurting.

  489. 00:10:34:53 - 00:10:36:26

  490. Sarah is hurting.

  491. 00:10:36:26 - 00:10:38:52

  492. In this culture,

  493. if a couple couldn't get pregnant,

  494. 00:10:38:52 - 00:10:42:33

  495. you blamed the woman,

  496. which of course is horrific.

  497. 00:10:42:44 - 00:10:44:30

  498. So, Abraham, you imagine the first day

  499. 00:10:44:30 - 00:10:46:13

  500. Abraham comes home

  501. and he goes, guess what?

  502. 00:10:46:13 - 00:10:48:15

  503. Talk to God today

  504. 00:10:48:15 - 00:10:51:15

  505. who has two thumbs

  506. and is getting ready to have a baby.

  507. 00:10:54:00 - 00:10:57:00

  508. And then every day,

  509. Sarah can't make that happen.

  510. 00:10:57:17 - 00:11:00:34

  511. And then Abraham sleeps with Hagar

  512. and she gets pregnant.

  513. 00:11:00:34 - 00:11:05:25

  514. Which means, at least in Sarah's

  515. mind, biologically, she is the problem.

  516. 00:11:06:28 - 00:11:08:36

  517. And then, of course, Hagar,

  518. 00:11:08:36 - 00:11:11:36

  519. can you imagine

  520. what it's like to be born a slave?

  521. 00:11:12:40 - 00:11:14:48

  522. You don't have a future

  523. 00:11:14:48 - 00:11:16:38

  524. you don't dream about one day.

  525. 00:11:16:38 - 00:11:17:53

  526. There's no one day for you.

  527. 00:11:17:53 - 00:11:20:01

  528. You're owned by another human being.

  529. 00:11:20:01 - 00:11:20:15

  530. You see,

  531. 00:11:20:15 - 00:11:24:18

  532. the Bible tells us that our world isn't

  533. just full of people hurting people.

  534. 00:11:24:18 - 00:11:27:48

  535. It's full of hurting

  536. people. What about you?

  537. 00:11:30:52 - 00:11:32:54

  538. Your story

  539. 00:11:32:54 - 00:11:35:58

  540. full of times people have hurt you.

  541. 00:11:37:40 - 00:11:38:29

  542. I want you to.

  543. 00:11:38:29 - 00:11:41:03

  544. I want you to see something in the Bible.

  545. 00:11:41:03 - 00:11:44:12

  546. We don't need Genesis 16

  547. 00:11:44:12 - 00:11:47:21

  548. to tell the incredible story

  549. about what God is doing in Abraham.

  550. 00:11:47:21 - 00:11:49:14

  551. You have to understand that

  552. we don't need it.

  553. 00:11:49:14 - 00:11:52:10

  554. God can just come to an elderly couple

  555. that is infertile

  556. 00:11:52:10 - 00:11:53:31

  557. and say, you're going to have a kid.

  558. 00:11:53:31 - 00:11:56:31

  559. Next verse they have a kid and we go, wow.

  560. 00:11:59:09 - 00:12:01:22

  561. But the very next thing

  562. after we say, wow, I would be

  563. 00:12:01:22 - 00:12:04:55

  564. that would never happen in my story

  565. and in my life.

  566. 00:12:05:11 - 00:12:08:09

  567. You see, Genesis 16 is God telling you

  568. 00:12:08:09 - 00:12:11:09

  569. he knows the world you live in.

  570. 00:12:11:36 - 00:12:13:43

  571. He knows your story. He knows mine.

  572. 00:12:13:43 - 00:12:18:35

  573. He knows the world is full

  574. of hurting people who hurt people.

  575. 00:12:18:35 - 00:12:24:25

  576. Genesis 16 is God saying

  577. the Bible takes place in the real world

  578. 00:12:25:05 - 00:12:27:30

  579. with real people who are hurting, with

  580. 00:12:27:30 - 00:12:30:39

  581. real people who are hurting other people.

  582. 00:12:30:39 - 00:12:32:58

  583. It takes place in your world

  584. 00:12:34:46 - 00:12:36:05

  585. and in mine.

  586. 00:12:36:05 - 00:12:39:08

  587. I told you I

  588. was going to use a jewelry store metaphor.

  589. 00:12:39:08 - 00:12:42:03

  590. You know, when you walk in a jewelry store

  591. and you look at a case inside the case,

  592. 00:12:42:03 - 00:12:45:02

  593. you'll find a lot of this

  594. kind of black velvet,

  595. 00:12:46:27 - 00:12:48:42

  596. totally unremarkable on its own, in fact,

  597. 00:12:48:42 - 00:12:51:42

  598. not only unremarkable, little depressing.

  599. 00:12:52:00 - 00:12:52:46

  600. It's black.

  601. 00:12:52:46 - 00:12:53:40

  602. It's void.

  603. 00:12:53:40 - 00:12:54:47

  604. It's pointless.

  605. 00:12:54:47 - 00:12:55:48

  606. It's meaningless.

  607. 00:12:55:48 - 00:12:58:44

  608. That is our world.

  609. 00:12:58:44 - 00:13:01:44

  610. The Bible is telling us.

  611. 00:13:02:01 - 00:13:04:17

  612. That if you came in this weekend,

  613. you're feeling guilty.

  614. 00:13:04:17 - 00:13:06:03

  615. You're feeling dirty.

  616. You're feeling broken.

  617. 00:13:06:03 - 00:13:09:24

  618. You're feeling frustrated

  619. internally and externally.

  620. 00:13:09:24 - 00:13:13:24

  621. If you came in this weekend having hurt

  622. people, if you came in this weekend,

  623. 00:13:13:31 - 00:13:20:01

  624. having been hurt by people,

  625. this chapter of the Bible is for you.

  626. 00:13:21:40 - 00:13:26:04

  627. God sees the velvet of your story

  628. 00:13:28:03 - 00:13:29:53

  629. and he knows he can't

  630. 00:13:29:53 - 00:13:33:41

  631. say one more thing about big promises

  632. 00:13:33:52 - 00:13:37:09

  633. until he talks about that.

  634. 00:13:39:15 - 00:13:41:25

  635. And that leads me to my second point,

  636. 00:13:41:25 - 00:13:44:25

  637. which is to say not just the velvet,

  638. 00:13:44:44 - 00:13:46:45

  639. but the diamond in my pocket.

  640. 00:13:46:45 - 00:13:50:06

  641. Here I have a totally real

  642. and totally expensive diamond.

  643. 00:13:53:59 - 00:13:56:58

  644. You see, the whole reason

  645. jewelry stores have the black velvet is

  646. 00:13:56:58 - 00:14:01:28

  647. so that when you put a diamond on it, it

  648. pops, right.

  649. 00:14:01:28 - 00:14:04:53

  650. The velvet is intended

  651. to make the diamond shine,

  652. 00:14:04:53 - 00:14:08:20

  653. to make sure your attention is drawn

  654. where it needs to be.

  655. 00:14:08:20 - 00:14:12:24

  656. And friends, I want you to see that

  657. the Bible tells a story that in a black

  658. 00:14:12:37 - 00:14:18:20

  659. velvet world,

  660. the diamond of God's promise sparkles.

  661. 00:14:19:02 - 00:14:22:09

  662. And if you're paying attention in Genesis

  663. 16, you're saying, well,

  664. 00:14:22:09 - 00:14:23:12

  665. what happens now? Right?

  666. 00:14:23:12 - 00:14:28:32

  667. What happens to God's faithfulness

  668. when we are unfaithful?

  669. 00:14:28:32 - 00:14:30:28

  670. Which is why we have to look ahead

  671. 00:14:30:28 - 00:14:34:26

  672. to Genesis 17, where Pastor Joe

  673. will preach on this next week.

  674. 00:14:34:26 - 00:14:37:11

  675. But, he can't stop me,

  676. so I'm going to borrow from it.

  677. 00:14:38:34 - 00:14:41:07

  678. If you have a Bible, look on page 11,

  679. very next chapter,

  680. 00:14:41:07 - 00:14:44:52

  681. Genesis 17, God's

  682. going to have a conversation with Abraham.

  683. 00:14:44:52 - 00:14:48:20

  684. And you have to know this happens

  685. right after Genesis 16.

  686. 00:14:48:54 - 00:14:49:18

  687. Okay.

  688. 00:14:49:18 - 00:14:53:49

  689. Keep in mind the velvet of Genesis 16

  690. is our background.

  691. 00:14:53:49 - 00:14:55:17

  692. Here's how that conversation goes.

  693. 00:14:55:17 - 00:14:57:29

  694. Pick it up in verse 15.

  695. 00:14:57:29 - 00:15:00:28

  696. And God said to Abraham,

  697. 00:15:00:34 - 00:15:03:23

  698. as for Sarah, your wife,

  699. you shall not call her

  700. 00:15:03:23 - 00:15:06:23

  701. name Sarah, but Sarah shall be her name.

  702. 00:15:07:08 - 00:15:11:27

  703. I will bless her, and moreover,

  704. I will give you a son by her.

  705. 00:15:12:03 - 00:15:15:38

  706. I will bless her,

  707. and she shall become nations,

  708. 00:15:15:58 - 00:15:19:03

  709. kings of people shall come from her.

  710. 00:15:19:34 - 00:15:22:46

  711. Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed,

  712. and said to himself,

  713. 00:15:22:52 - 00:15:26:38

  714. shall a child

  715. be born to a man who is 100 years old?

  716. 00:15:26:38 - 00:15:30:12

  717. Shall Sarah,

  718. who is 90 years old, bear a child?

  719. 00:15:30:21 - 00:15:34:40

  720. And Abraham said to God,

  721. oh, that Ishmael might live before you.

  722. 00:15:34:40 - 00:15:37:27

  723. That's the son

  724. he had with Hagar. By the way.

  725. 00:15:39:21 - 00:15:41:16

  726. And God said, no, but,

  727. 00:15:41:16 - 00:15:45:13

  728. Sarah, your wife shall bear you a son,

  729. and you shall call his name Isaac.

  730. 00:15:45:24 - 00:15:49:03

  731. I will establish my covenant with him

  732. as an everlasting covenant

  733. 00:15:49:14 - 00:15:50:40

  734. for his offspring after him.

  735. 00:15:50:40 - 00:15:53:17

  736. As for Ishmael, I have heard you.

  737. 00:15:53:17 - 00:15:58:05

  738. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make

  739. him fruitful, and multiply him greatly.

  740. 00:15:58:14 - 00:16:01:37

  741. He will fathered 12 princes,

  742. and I will make him into a great nation.

  743. 00:16:01:46 - 00:16:04:47

  744. But I will establish my covenant

  745. with Isaac, whom

  746. 00:16:04:47 - 00:16:08:09

  747. Sarah shall bear to you at this time

  748. next year.

  749. 00:16:08:09 - 00:16:12:37

  750. Friends,

  751. we are only 22 verses from Abraham

  752. 00:16:12:37 - 00:16:16:47

  753. and Sarah

  754. sending Hagar into the wilderness to die

  755. 00:16:18:33 - 00:16:21:49

  756. were 22 verses removed from an affair,

  757. 00:16:21:52 - 00:16:26:53

  758. from an explosion,

  759. from chaos, from dysfunction, from velvet.

  760. 00:16:26:53 - 00:16:31:24

  761. And within 22 verses, all three people,

  762. Abraham, Sarah and Hagar,

  763. 00:16:31:24 - 00:16:35:58

  764. which we'll look at in a minute, have

  765. already received another promise from God.

  766. 00:16:38:11 - 00:16:40:54

  767. You know what that means?

  768. 00:16:40:54 - 00:16:43:16

  769. It means that God

  770. 00:16:43:16 - 00:16:46:16

  771. is establishing relationship with people,

  772. 00:16:47:17 - 00:16:50:17

  773. not on the basis of who they are

  774. 00:16:50:21 - 00:16:53:04

  775. and what they do,

  776. 00:16:53:04 - 00:16:56:01

  777. but on the basis of who he is.

  778. 00:16:56:01 - 00:16:59:44

  779. That means God is making promises

  780. 00:16:59:44 - 00:17:04:46

  781. and keeping promises to unfaithful people,

  782. 00:17:04:53 - 00:17:08:32

  783. hurting people who have hurt people.

  784. 00:17:08:32 - 00:17:10:11

  785. That this means two things.

  786. 00:17:10:11 - 00:17:12:01

  787. One is if you're here

  788. and you don't know where you're at

  789. 00:17:12:01 - 00:17:13:34

  790. with God,

  791. you wouldn't call yourself a Christian.

  792. 00:17:13:34 - 00:17:16:59

  793. You know what you call yourself

  794. and you're going, if God is out there

  795. 00:17:16:59 - 00:17:20:49

  796. and if God is doing something,

  797. it isn't for people like me.

  798. 00:17:20:49 - 00:17:23:51

  799. Genesis 16 is God hitting the pause

  800. button and saying,

  801. 00:17:24:13 - 00:17:27:54

  802. I refuse to move forward with the story

  803. until you know how wrong you are.

  804. 00:17:30:57 - 00:17:33:57

  805. His Abraham heroic.

  806. 00:17:34:24 - 00:17:37:06

  807. Is Sarah virtuous?

  808. 00:17:37:06 - 00:17:39:23

  809. Is Hagar innocent?

  810. 00:17:39:23 - 00:17:40:20

  811. No, no.

  812. 00:17:40:20 - 00:17:46:31

  813. But God is not basing his promises

  814. on the moral performance of people.

  815. 00:17:46:31 - 00:17:51:07

  816. By the way, if he was,

  817. no one could ever get a promise.

  818. 00:17:51:16 - 00:17:55:41

  819. There are only in this room

  820. and on this stage and holding this

  821. 00:17:55:41 - 00:17:59:27

  822. microphone,

  823. hurting people who hurt people.

  824. 00:17:59:29 - 00:18:05:04

  825. God is offering you relationship with him,

  826. a future with him

  827. 00:18:05:05 - 00:18:08:41

  828. on the basis of his performance,

  829. not yours.

  830. 00:18:08:57 - 00:18:11:57

  831. And it has to be that way.

  832. 00:18:12:10 - 00:18:13:45

  833. But second, if you're here

  834. 00:18:13:45 - 00:18:17:03

  835. and you're a Christian brother

  836. or sister in Christ, how tempting it is

  837. 00:18:17:17 - 00:18:20:08

  838. when we do what we ought not

  839. 00:18:20:08 - 00:18:23:17

  840. when when we grow spiritually cold.

  841. 00:18:23:19 - 00:18:27:47

  842. How tempting it is to lean in to shame

  843. and to stay away from God.

  844. 00:18:27:52 - 00:18:31:37

  845. And days become weeks and weeks

  846. become months and months become years.

  847. 00:18:31:37 - 00:18:33:28

  848. Some of you haven't been in church

  849. in a while.

  850. 00:18:33:28 - 00:18:35:32

  851. Others sit in church every week.

  852. 00:18:35:32 - 00:18:37:04

  853. But the off switch is on.

  854. 00:18:37:04 - 00:18:41:12

  855. There's no connection with God

  856. because we're too ashamed to admit to him

  857. 00:18:41:19 - 00:18:45:06

  858. what we've done for 22 verses after chaos,

  859. 00:18:46:43 - 00:18:50:14

  860. he's reminding

  861. them he's going to do everything he said.

  862. 00:18:50:14 - 00:18:54:20

  863. Brother, sister in Christ,

  864. why would you stay away another second?

  865. 00:18:55:34 - 00:18:58:48

  866. Hasn't

  867. your hope always been his faithfulness?

  868. 00:18:58:57 - 00:19:02:47

  869. Has it your hope always been that

  870. against the velvet of your sin

  871. 00:19:02:47 - 00:19:07:06

  872. and mine,

  873. the diamond of his promise shines.

  874. 00:19:07:51 - 00:19:12:11

  875. And so we have to open ourselves

  876. up to the idea that God is building

  877. 00:19:12:12 - 00:19:16:45

  878. relationship on his work, not ours.

  879. 00:19:18:24 - 00:19:19:00

  880. Can I know?

  881. 00:19:19:00 - 00:19:22:00

  882. I know what you're thinking

  883. because it's what I would be thinking.

  884. 00:19:22:00 - 00:19:24:59

  885. You're thinking, well, okay,

  886. for these people,

  887. 00:19:26:44 - 00:19:29:22

  888. but how could I ever know?

  889. 00:19:29:22 - 00:19:30:28

  890. How could I ever believe?

  891. 00:19:30:28 - 00:19:34:02

  892. How could I ever trust

  893. that God is doing that for me?

  894. 00:19:34:02 - 00:19:35:25

  895. Well, that's my third point.

  896. 00:19:35:25 - 00:19:38:41

  897. Not just the velvet,

  898. not just the diamond, but the proposal.

  899. 00:19:39:48 - 00:19:42:46

  900. Because

  901. after all, if you're single and lonely,

  902. 00:19:42:46 - 00:19:45:46

  903. a jewelry store

  904. is the most depressing place to be.

  905. 00:19:47:26 - 00:19:49:14

  906. The idea that someone out there is

  907. 00:19:49:14 - 00:19:52:14

  908. falling in love is not encouraging to you.

  909. 00:19:52:27 - 00:19:55:19

  910. Someone reminded me this week

  911. that you can find lots of diamonds for

  912. 00:19:55:19 - 00:19:58:19

  913. sale on Facebook Marketplace.

  914. 00:19:58:32 - 00:20:01:31

  915. That's not because things went well.

  916. 00:20:03:23 - 00:20:04:38

  917. No, a diamond

  918. 00:20:04:38 - 00:20:08:45

  919. only becomes special

  920. when someone picks it out for you.

  921. 00:20:08:45 - 00:20:12:35

  922. I remember when I was saving

  923. for Amy's engagement ring.

  924. 00:20:12:35 - 00:20:13:34

  925. I was working at a bookstore.

  926. 00:20:13:34 - 00:20:16:34

  927. I was in college,

  928. and every Friday I would get paid

  929. 00:20:16:40 - 00:20:19:48

  930. and I would go to the bank

  931. and I would take out just enough for gas,

  932. 00:20:19:48 - 00:20:20:57

  933. and then I would go to the jewelry store.

  934. 00:20:20:57 - 00:20:22:48

  935. I must have had it on layaway

  936. or something.

  937. 00:20:22:48 - 00:20:27:05

  938. I would give them the rest of my money

  939. week after week after week

  940. 00:20:27:12 - 00:20:30:14

  941. after week

  942. after week, after you get the picture.

  943. 00:20:32:49 - 00:20:33:36

  944. And when I look back

  945. 00:20:33:36 - 00:20:37:26

  946. on that time now,

  947. I realize that the powerful part of what

  948. 00:20:37:26 - 00:20:41:19

  949. I was saying to Amy, and it still holds

  950. true, is that she was worth it.

  951. 00:20:43:06 - 00:20:44:21

  952. That's the power of a diamond.

  953. 00:20:44:21 - 00:20:48:51

  954. When someone takes it off of the case

  955. and puts it on your finger.

  956. 00:20:48:51 - 00:20:52:37

  957. Friends, I wouldn't want you to think

  958. that God's promises are out there

  959. 00:20:52:37 - 00:20:56:20

  960. somewhere for someone at some time.

  961. 00:20:56:26 - 00:20:58:48

  962. God doesn't

  963. want you to walk in a jewelry store

  964. 00:20:58:48 - 00:21:02:11

  965. and see all the diamonds

  966. of what he's doing for everybody else.

  967. 00:21:02:11 - 00:21:05:14

  968. God wants to take one out of the case

  969. and put it on your finger.

  970. 00:21:05:20 - 00:21:06:37

  971. So how do you know that?

  972. 00:21:06:37 - 00:21:10:00

  973. Because the least important person

  974. in this story

  975. 00:21:10:00 - 00:21:14:52

  976. in Genesis 16 is a unwed mother

  977. who's a slave

  978. 00:21:14:52 - 00:21:18:40

  979. girl living in the wilderness,

  980. thrown out by her owners.

  981. 00:21:18:40 - 00:21:21:40

  982. She does not matter to the story,

  983. and she's the only one.

  984. 00:21:21:40 - 00:21:23:12

  985. In Genesis 16, God speaks to.

  986. 00:21:27:00 - 00:21:28:53

  987. Look with me at Genesis 16, verse six.

  988. 00:21:28:53 - 00:21:30:54

  989. It's the most monstrous verse

  990. in the entire passage.

  991. 00:21:30:54 - 00:21:33:18

  992. Here's what it says.

  993. 00:21:33:18 - 00:21:35:50

  994. But Abraham said, Sarah, I behold,

  995. 00:21:35:50 - 00:21:38:52

  996. your servant is in your power

  997. 00:21:39:59 - 00:21:42:24

  998. due to her as you please.

  999. 00:21:42:24 - 00:21:46:04

1000. And then Sarah, I dealt harshly with her,

1001. and she fled from her.

  1002. 00:21:46:47 - 00:21:49:12

1003. You know, if Hagar story ends there,

  1004. 00:21:49:12 - 00:21:52:07

1005. we would get that, wouldn't we?

  1006. 00:21:52:07 - 00:21:52:59

  1007. Wouldn't be right.

  1008. 00:21:52:59 - 00:21:56:31

1009. But the world shows up and spits out

  1010. Hagar's.

  1011. 00:21:57:25 - 00:21:58:51

  1012. We know that.

  1013. 00:21:58:51 - 00:22:02:20

1014. So if her story ends there, we would

1015. understand what makes sense to us.

  1016. 00:22:02:38 - 00:22:04:46

  1017. But it doesn't.

  1018. 00:22:04:46 - 00:22:07:40

1019. God comes looking for her.

  1020. 00:22:07:40 - 00:22:08:50

  1021. God wants her.

  1022. 00:22:08:50 - 00:22:11:55

1023. God is pausing the story

  1024. of what he's doing

  1025. 00:22:11:55 - 00:22:15:37

1026. and Abraham and Sarah to come after her

  1027. and after the encounter.

  1028. 00:22:15:37 - 00:22:17:51

1029. This is what Hagar says in verse 13.

  1030. 00:22:17:51 - 00:22:23:12

1031. So she called the name of the Lord

1032. who spoke to her, you are a God of seeing.

  1033. 00:22:24:18 - 00:22:24:45

  1034. For she

  1035. 00:22:24:45 - 00:22:28:35

1036. said, truly here I have seen him

1037. who looks after me did you know

  1038. 00:22:28:35 - 00:22:32:45

1039. the first person in the Bible to name

  1040. God is an unwed

  1041. 00:22:33:05 - 00:22:36:05

1042. slave girl mother on the run?

  1043. 00:22:37:15 - 00:22:39:41

1044. And you know what she names him?

  1045. 00:22:39:41 - 00:22:42:40

1046. The God who sees me.

  1047. 00:22:43:33 - 00:22:46:57

1048. Because you see, God isn't

1049. just about big stories and big promises.

  1050. 00:22:47:08 - 00:22:50:40

1051. God isn't just about jewelry stores

  1052. and cases of diamonds.

  1053. 00:22:50:49 - 00:22:55:44

  1054. God is about pursuing,

1055. hurting individuals who have hurt others

  1056. 00:22:55:44 - 00:23:00:43

1057. and been hurt and making sure they know

1058. he has a promise for them.

  1059. 00:23:00:46 - 00:23:06:08

1060. When you are reading Genesis 16, right,

1061. you love the God who comes after Hagar,

  1062. 00:23:06:12 - 00:23:09:15

1063. and the hard cry of your life is God.

  1064. 00:23:09:24 - 00:23:13:06

1065. How could I know that you would

1066. come after me the same way?

  1067. 00:23:15:19 - 00:23:18:18

1068. And the answer to that, friends,

  1069. 00:23:18:45 - 00:23:20:06

  1070. is the life, death,

  1071. 00:23:20:06 - 00:23:23:06

1072. and resurrection of Jesus Christ,

  1073. 00:23:24:20 - 00:23:28:28

  1074. God's own son,

1075. who leaves the jewelry store

  1076. 00:23:29:38 - 00:23:32:38

1077. to find you in the wilderness

  1078. 00:23:33:07 - 00:23:37:15

1079. so that you wouldn't be left

1080. out of the big promise of God.

  1081. 00:23:37:15 - 00:23:40:24

1082. Here's what the Apostle Paul writes

1083. in the book of Romans chapter five.

  1084. 00:23:40:24 - 00:23:44:08

1085. He says it this way tell me,

1086. if you don't hear Hagar echoing in these

  1087. 00:23:44:08 - 00:23:47:28

1088. verses, it says, for a while

  1089. we were still weak

  1090. 00:23:48:44 - 00:23:50:05

  1091. at the right time.

  1092. 00:23:50:05 - 00:23:52:59

1093. Christ died for the ungodly.

  1094. 00:23:52:59 - 00:23:55:57

1095. For one will scarcely die

1096. for a righteous person, though

  1097. 00:23:55:57 - 00:23:59:11

1098. perhaps for a good person

1099. one would dare even to die.

  1100. 00:23:59:11 - 00:24:02:11

1101. But God shows his love for us,

  1102. 00:24:02:13 - 00:24:06:46

1103. in that while we were still sinners,

  1104. Christ died for us.

  1105. 00:24:06:46 - 00:24:09:19

1106. You see, Jesus is God coming to us.

  1107. 00:24:09:19 - 00:24:12:44

1108. Jesus is God saying to us, I'm

  1109. going to come myself.

  1110. 00:24:12:44 - 00:24:15:15

  1111. I'm going to live

  1112. righteously in your place.

  1113. 00:24:15:15 - 00:24:20:03

1114. Jesus goes to the cross

1115. having never hurt a single person,

  1116. 00:24:20:10 - 00:24:25:08

  1117. but on the cross

1118. he becomes a hurting person who has hurt

  1119. 00:24:25:08 - 00:24:30:34

1120. people as he carries my sin and he carries

1121. the sins of all who will trust him.

  1122. 00:24:30:39 - 00:24:34:40

1123. And he comes up under the weight and anger

  1124. and wrath of God.

  1125. 00:24:34:44 - 00:24:39:39

1126. And God pours out his judgment on the

1127. Jesus so that Jesus's final words are.

  1128. 00:24:39:39 - 00:24:44:17

1129. It is finished and he dies.

  1130. 00:24:44:48 - 00:24:46:34

  1131. And three days later

1132. he raises from the dead.

  1133. 00:24:46:34 - 00:24:51:16

1134. And he says, if you will see in me

1135. the God who sees you,

  1136. 00:24:51:16 - 00:24:56:33

1137. if you will find in me an entry point

1138. for you into the great story of God,

  1139. 00:24:56:33 - 00:24:57:30

1140. if you'll find in me

  1141. 00:24:57:30 - 00:25:02:27

1142. not just a macro promise,

1143. but a micro promise, a promise for you.

  1144. 00:25:02:29 - 00:25:05:07

1145. You can be with God forever,

  1146. just like Hagar.

  1147. 00:25:05:07 - 00:25:06:35

1148. Not because you earned it,

  1149. 00:25:07:51 - 00:25:11:39

  1150. but because

1151. praise God he earned it for you.

  1152. 00:25:12:48 - 00:25:16:02

  1153. Friends, we don't need Genesis 16

1154. to tell the story of a promise

  1155. 00:25:16:02 - 00:25:17:30

  1156. making promise, keeping God.

  1157. 00:25:17:30 - 00:25:19:32

  1158. Genesis 16 isn't about God.

  1159. 00:25:19:32 - 00:25:21:16

  1160. It's about you.

  1161. 00:25:21:16 - 00:25:24:14

  1162. It's about me.

  1163. 00:25:24:14 - 00:25:28:42

1164. It's about letting us know

1165. that if we come to God in faith in Jesus,

  1166. 00:25:28:42 - 00:25:31:42

  1167. his faithfulness

  1168. 00:25:31:51 - 00:25:36:12

1169. will swallow up our unfaithfulness.

  1170. 00:25:36:52 - 00:25:37:49

  1171. Let's pray.

  1172. 00:25:37:49 - 00:25:40:43

  1173. Father God,

1174. thank you so much for Genesis 16.

  1175. 00:25:40:43 - 00:25:43:43

  1176. Somewhere this weekend there's a Hagar

  1177. 00:25:44:44 - 00:25:46:16

1178. who has long given up

  1179. 00:25:46:16 - 00:25:49:30

1180. the idea you you love Abraham,

  1181. you love Sarah.

  1182. 00:25:49:30 - 00:25:54:45

1183. There are some people here who know you,

1184. who are experiencing you, but not them.

  1185. 00:25:54:45 - 00:25:55:12

  1186. And God.

  1187. 00:25:55:12 - 00:25:58:30

1188. Not because of the sermon, not not because

1189. of anything that happened, but.

  1190. 00:25:58:46 - 00:26:02:43

1191. But through the power of your Holy Spirit,

1192. would you, the God who sees

  1193. 00:26:02:43 - 00:26:04:15

1194. draw near to them even now?

  1195. 00:26:08:35 - 00:26:11:07

1196. God, for those of us who belong to

1197. you already that we would

  1198. 00:26:11:07 - 00:26:15:02

  1199. remember our our unfaithfulness

1200. is not a reason to hide from you.

  1201. 00:26:15:02 - 00:26:16:57

1202. It's a reason to run to you.

  1203. 00:26:16:57 - 00:26:18:08

  1204. We are the velvet.

  1205. 00:26:18:08 - 00:26:21:07

  1206. You are the diamond.

  1207. 00:26:21:54 - 00:26:24:54

  1208. Our individual diamond.

  1209. 00:26:26:16 - 00:26:28:06

1210. Jesus name we pray. Amen.
