  1. 00:00:02:20 - 00:00:03:19

  2. This is a reading from

  3. 00:00:03:19 - 00:00:06:19

  4. Matthew 2:1-11.

    Matthew 2:1–11

  5. 00:00:06:30 - 00:00:09:33

  6. Now, after

  7. Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea

  8. 00:00:09:33 - 00:00:13:34

  9. in the days of Herod

  10. the king, behold, wise men from the east

  11. 00:00:13:34 - 00:00:18:06

  12. came to Jerusalem, saying, where is he

  13. who has been born King of the Jews?

  14. 00:00:18:20 - 00:00:21:33

  15. For we saw his star when it rose,

  16. and have come to worship him.

  17. 00:00:22:10 - 00:00:26:06

  18. When Herod the king heard this,

  19. he was troubled, and all Jerusalem

  20. 00:00:26:06 - 00:00:30:12

  21. with him, and assembling all the chief

  22. priests and scribes of the people,

  23. 00:00:30:12 - 00:00:33:12

  24. he inquired of them

  25. where the Christ was to be born.

  26. 00:00:33:23 - 00:00:36:16

  27. They told him in Bethlehem of Judea.

  28. 00:00:36:16 - 00:00:38:41

  29. For so it is written by the prophet.

  30. 00:00:38:41 - 00:00:41:36

  31. And you,

  32. O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

  33. 00:00:41:36 - 00:00:44:35

  34. are by no means least

  35. among the rulers of Judah.

  36. 00:00:44:55 - 00:00:49:12

  37. For from you shall come a ruler

  38. who will shepherd my people Israel.

  39. 00:00:49:43 - 00:00:53:17

  40. Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly,

  41. and ascertained from them

  42. 00:00:53:17 - 00:00:55:28

  43. what time the star had appeared.

  44. 00:00:55:28 - 00:00:59:40

  45. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying,

  46. go and search diligently for the child.

  47. 00:00:59:49 - 00:01:03:53

  48. And when you have found him, bring me word

  49. that I too may come and worship him.

  50. 00:01:04:26 - 00:01:07:44

  51. After listening to the king,

  52. they went on their way, and behold,

  53. 00:01:07:49 - 00:01:11:18

  54. the star that they had seen

  55. when it rose went before them

  56. 00:01:11:18 - 00:01:14:30

  57. until it came to rest over the place

  58. where the child was.

  59. 00:01:14:57 - 00:01:18:47

  60. When they saw this star,

  61. they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

  62. 00:01:19:03 - 00:01:20:30

  63. And going into the house

  64. 00:01:20:30 - 00:01:24:25

  65. they saw the child with Mary, his mother,

  66. and they fell down and worshiped him.

  67. 00:01:24:54 - 00:01:27:36

  68. Then opening their treasures,

  69. they offered him gifts.

  70. 00:01:27:36 - 00:01:29:38

  71. Gold and frankincense and myrrh.

  72. 00:01:32:22 - 00:01:33:21

  73. Well, good morning and

  74. 00:01:33:21 - 00:01:36:49

  75. welcome to the weekly gathering of Christ

  76. Community Chapel.

  77. 00:01:36:50 - 00:01:38:02

  78. My name is Zach.

  79. 00:01:38:02 - 00:01:42:39

  80. I'm one of the pastors here, and I'm

  81. so glad we get to be part of your weekend.

  82. 00:01:42:40 - 00:01:46:26

  83. This is week

  84. two of our Christmas sermon series.

  85. 00:01:46:27 - 00:01:50:35

  86. I'm really looking forward to spending

  87. this time with you, but it's interesting.

  88. 00:01:51:02 - 00:01:53:06

  89. This little inside baseball here.

  90. 00:01:53:06 - 00:01:57:29

  91. The Christmas sermon series

  92. is usually the preaching pastor's

  93. 00:01:57:39 - 00:02:02:40

  94. least favorite sermon series,

  95. and that's for one obvious reason.

  96. 00:02:02:49 - 00:02:07:57

  97. There's only so many new angles you can

  98. take on a story that doesn't change.

  99. 00:02:07:58 - 00:02:08:09

  100. You know,

  101. 00:02:08:09 - 00:02:12:01

  102. I've been doing this now for 20 years,

  103. and that's 20 different Christmases.

  104. 00:02:12:01 - 00:02:16:34

  105. And I don't have 20 different unique

  106. perspectives on Christmas.

  107. 00:02:16:36 - 00:02:18:54

  108. It can feel a little redundant.

  109. 00:02:18:54 - 00:02:21:56

  110. It can feel like you're

  111. out of creative material.

  112. 00:02:22:12 - 00:02:24:07

  113. Maybe you feel like that sometimes.

  114. 00:02:24:07 - 00:02:26:47

  115. Like, oh,

  116. the Christmas story. I. I know the story.

  117. 00:02:26:47 - 00:02:29:01

  118. You hear it read you. I know this story.

  119. 00:02:29:01 - 00:02:31:44

  120. Even if you don't have much

  121. of a religious background,

  122. 00:02:31:44 - 00:02:35:29

  123. you probably know that there were wise

  124. men involved in the Christmas story.

  125. 00:02:35:58 - 00:02:39:03

  126. But sometimes

  127. when we're overly familiar with something,

  128. 00:02:39:03 - 00:02:42:03

  129. we think we know more about it than we do,

  130. 00:02:42:06 - 00:02:45:45

  131. and as a consequence, we can miss

  132. some of the really great stuff.

  133. 00:02:45:46 - 00:02:48:47

  134. Like, I don't want to ruin anyone's

  135. Christmas, but let me give you

  136. 00:02:48:47 - 00:02:50:14

  137. some examples.

  138. 00:02:50:14 - 00:02:55:17

  139. For example, it's not true

  140. that there were three wise men I know.

  141. 00:02:55:17 - 00:02:57:03

  142. Don't get angry with me, okay?

  143. 00:02:57:03 - 00:03:01:08

  144. I just mean that there were three gifts

  145. gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

  146. 00:03:01:26 - 00:03:04:37

  147. But most scholars believe

  148. that the group of of wise

  149. 00:03:04:37 - 00:03:08:41

  150. men traveling here would have been close

  151. to 100 people wise

  152. 00:03:08:41 - 00:03:12:31

  153. men, servants, cooks, cleaners,

  154. a whole entourage.

  155. 00:03:12:49 - 00:03:17:44

  156. But I guess singing we 100 Kings

  157. just doesn't roll off the tongue right?

  158. 00:03:18:29 - 00:03:19:14

  159. Here's another thing.

  160. 00:03:19:14 - 00:03:21:40

  161. And this one, right

  162. might really make you upset.

  163. 00:03:21:40 - 00:03:24:40

  164. The wise men

  165. didn't actually visit the manger.

  166. 00:03:25:05 - 00:03:25:25

  167. Okay.

  168. 00:03:25:25 - 00:03:27:54

  169. Jesus, you realized

  170. didn't live in a manger, okay?

  171. 00:03:27:54 - 00:03:28:41

  172. He was.

  173. 00:03:28:41 - 00:03:31:04

  174. He was born in one,

  175. but he didn't live there.

  176. 00:03:31:04 - 00:03:35:23

  177. And by the time the wise men get to Jesus,

  178. he's probably about two years old.

  179. 00:03:35:23 - 00:03:37:58

  180. So they're not even visiting baby Jesus.

  181. 00:03:37:58 - 00:03:40:40

  182. They're visiting toddler Jesus.

  183. 00:03:40:40 - 00:03:44:02

  184. Now, I don't mean that you need to go home

  185. and throw away your nativity set.

  186. 00:03:44:03 - 00:03:46:07

  187. That's that's not what I'm saying.

  188. 00:03:46:07 - 00:03:50:06

  189. I'm just saying, if you didn't know

  190. those things, then maybe open yourself

  191. 00:03:50:06 - 00:03:54:07

  192. up to the idea that there's

  193. more to a story like this than you.

  194. 00:03:54:07 - 00:03:55:32

  195. First saw.

  196. 00:03:55:32 - 00:03:59:31

  197. And if there are, if there's more,

  198. like on a Bible trivia perspective,

  199. 00:03:59:31 - 00:04:03:59

  200. then maybe there's more in a life shaping,

  201. life changing perspective.

  202. 00:04:03:59 - 00:04:04:46

  203. So if you have a Bible,

  204. 00:04:04:46 - 00:04:07:44

  205. would you take it out

  206. and open it to Matthew chapter two?

  207. 00:04:07:44 - 00:04:09:12

  208. If you don't have one,

  209. you want to use one.

  210. 00:04:09:12 - 00:04:12:12

  211. There's one in the pew in front of you

  212. or in the back of his hall.

  213. 00:04:12:19 - 00:04:15:51

  214. And I can tell you that it's on page 757.

  215. 00:04:15:51 - 00:04:16:38

  216. But we want to do this

  217. 00:04:16:38 - 00:04:21:42

  218. morning is lean into this story

  219. and find a little bit of joy in it for us,

  220. 00:04:21:42 - 00:04:24:43

  221. because after all, that's our theme

  222. this Christmas joy.

  223. 00:04:24:59 - 00:04:27:48

  224. So my outline is three points,

  225. very simple.

  226. 00:04:27:48 - 00:04:31:17

  227. And they go like this

  228. I want to show you the source of joy,

  229. 00:04:31:58 - 00:04:35:34

  230. the reach of joy, and the path to joy.

  231. 00:04:35:34 - 00:04:35:47

  232. Okay.

  233. 00:04:35:47 - 00:04:39:15

  234. The source of joy,

  235. the reach of joy and the path to joy.

  236. 00:04:39:39 - 00:04:39:50

  237. All right.

  238. 00:04:39:50 - 00:04:42:31

  239. Let's start with the first one,

  240. the source of joy.

  241. 00:04:42:31 - 00:04:46:29

  242. Probably notice when this passage was read

  243. that there's a lot of joy

  244. 00:04:46:29 - 00:04:49:52

  245. in this passage,

  246. a lot of excitement, a lot of happiness.

  247. 00:04:50:06 - 00:04:52:09

  248. If you didn't notice,

  249. let's read it together.

  250. 00:04:52:09 - 00:04:55:30

  251. Verses one and two, and then we'll read

  252. a couple verses later in the passage.

  253. 00:04:55:30 - 00:04:56:08

  254. Here's what they say

  255. 00:04:57:11 - 00:04:58:14

  256. now. After Jesus

  257. 00:04:58:14 - 00:05:02:07

  258. was born in Bethlehem of Judea

  259. in the days of Herod

  260. 00:05:02:07 - 00:05:07:26

  261. the king, behold, wise men from the east

  262. came to Jerusalem, saying,

  263. 00:05:07:40 - 00:05:11:18

  264. where is he

  265. who has been born king of the Jews?

  266. 00:05:11:48 - 00:05:16:29

  267. For we saw his star when it rose,

  268. and have come to worship him.

  269. 00:05:16:31 - 00:05:18:27

  270. Skip down to verse nine.

  271. 00:05:18:27 - 00:05:21:49

  272. After listening to the King,

  273. they went on their own way,

  274. 00:05:22:07 - 00:05:25:53

  275. and behold, the star that they had seen

  276. when it rose went before them

  277. 00:05:26:08 - 00:05:29:24

  278. until it came to rest over the place

  279. where the child was.

  280. 00:05:29:49 - 00:05:34:13

  281. And when they saw the star,

  282. they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

  283. 00:05:34:31 - 00:05:37:24

  284. And going into the house

  285. they saw the child with Mary,

  286. 00:05:37:24 - 00:05:40:27

  287. his mother,

  288. and they fell down and worshiped him.

  289. 00:05:40:56 - 00:05:43:36

  290. Then, opening their treasures,

  291. they offered him gifts,

  292. 00:05:43:36 - 00:05:46:47

  293. gold and frankincense and myrrh.

  294. 00:05:47:10 - 00:05:49:52

  295. So you see, the wise men are very excited.

  296. 00:05:49:52 - 00:05:54:32

  297. They are very joyful that there's

  298. a star in the sky, that there's a king

  299. 00:05:54:32 - 00:05:59:58

  300. who's been born, and that finally

  301. they meet this little toddler King Jesus.

  302. 00:05:59:58 - 00:06:04:08

  303. But here's my question

  304. what is so joyful about that?

  305. 00:06:04:24 - 00:06:05:52

  306. For them?

  307. 00:06:05:52 - 00:06:08:23

  308. I mean, they don't know anything

  309. 00:06:08:23 - 00:06:11:39

  310. about who Jesus is going to become.

  311. 00:06:11:39 - 00:06:16:29

  312. Probably the real answer to who

  313. Jesus would be would have shocked them

  314. 00:06:16:43 - 00:06:19:00

  315. that Jesus would grow up

  316. to be a sinless man,

  317. 00:06:19:00 - 00:06:24:05

  318. that he would go to the cross and suffer

  319. under the weight of the sin of the church,

  320. 00:06:24:05 - 00:06:27:59

  321. under the judgment of God, that he would

  322. die and raise three days later.

  323. 00:06:27:59 - 00:06:30:02

  324. They they know none of that.

  325. 00:06:30:02 - 00:06:34:31

  326. All they know is there's a star,

  327. there's a king, and this is him.

  328. 00:06:34:31 - 00:06:36:55

  329. So why are they so joyful?

  330. 00:06:36:55 - 00:06:41:59

  331. I think the answer to

  332. that is found in the concept of a story.

  333. 00:06:42:24 - 00:06:44:25

  334. But let me put it to you

  335. this way. It's Christmas.

  336. 00:06:44:25 - 00:06:46:36

  337. You probably have a lot of family

  338. traditions.

  339. 00:06:46:36 - 00:06:47:32

  340. So does my family.

  341. 00:06:47:32 - 00:06:50:39

  342. And some of those traditions

  343. revolve around movies.

  344. 00:06:50:39 - 00:06:55:03

  345. We like to watch Christmas movies

  346. we love Home Alone, one and two.

  347. 00:06:55:05 - 00:06:59:54

  348. We pretend there are no other home alones

  349. after that, Die Hard.

  350. 00:06:59:54 - 00:07:03:10

  351. That's a Christmas movie,

  352. if you ask me any movie, you say ho

  353. 00:07:03:10 - 00:07:06:12

  354. ho ho, it is a Christmas movie, okay?

  355. 00:07:06:21 - 00:07:09:14

  356. And in my house, what that means

  357. Christmas season means we're

  358. 00:07:09:14 - 00:07:12:13

  359. watching a lot of hallmark movies.

  360. 00:07:12:37 - 00:07:15:55

  361. Now, when I talk about hallmark movies,

  362. I mean, like all hallmark movies,

  363. 00:07:15:55 - 00:07:16:54

  364. I look this up.

  365. 00:07:16:54 - 00:07:21:06

  366. 36 million Americans

  367. watch hallmark movies.

  368. 00:07:21:06 - 00:07:22:57

  369. So some of you are lying.

  370. 00:07:22:57 - 00:07:25:14

  371. Nostalgia. You're lying. Okay.

  372. 00:07:25:14 - 00:07:26:55

  373. And if you haven't seen a hallmark movie,

  374. 00:07:26:55 - 00:07:29:35

  375. let me catch you up on the most recent one

  376. I watched,

  377. 00:07:29:35 - 00:07:32:34

  378. which is really the same as all of them

  379. I've ever watched.

  380. 00:07:32:45 - 00:07:33:48

  381. Okay, here's how they go.

  382. 00:07:33:48 - 00:07:35:54

  383. There's a woman who lives in the city.

  384. 00:07:35:54 - 00:07:38:07

  385. She has a hotshot job as an architect.

  386. 00:07:38:07 - 00:07:40:24

  387. Or maybe like a cupcake designer.

  388. 00:07:40:24 - 00:07:42:10

  389. Okay, it's a thing.

  390. 00:07:43:09 - 00:07:44:10

  391. She has a boyfriend.

  392. 00:07:44:10 - 00:07:47:42

  393. He's very handsome,

  394. very successful, usually very wealthy.

  395. 00:07:47:42 - 00:07:49:36

  396. But she's up for a promotion.

  397. 00:07:49:36 - 00:07:52:55

  398. And the only way to get a promotion

  399. is to lead out on a project.

  400. 00:07:52:55 - 00:07:53:56

  401. You're not going to believe this.

  402. 00:07:53:56 - 00:07:57:11

  403. That just happens

  404. to be taking place in her home town.

  405. 00:07:57:57 - 00:07:59:26

  406. What are the odds of that?

  407. 00:07:59:26 - 00:08:02:54

  408. She says goodbye to her

  409. wildly handsome and wealthy boyfriend,

  410. 00:08:02:54 - 00:08:04:06

  411. goes back to her hometown.

  412. 00:08:04:06 - 00:08:07:56

  413. While she's there, she runs into her

  414. old high school boyfriend

  415. 00:08:08:03 - 00:08:11:03

  416. who doesn't have a job and may

  417. or may not be homeless.

  418. 00:08:12:28 - 00:08:12:53

  419. Okay.

  420. 00:08:12:53 - 00:08:16:04

  421. Over the course of her time

  422. in her hometown, she realizes

  423. 00:08:16:04 - 00:08:19:03

  424. the city is bad, work is bad.

  425. 00:08:19:32 - 00:08:22:25

  426. Handsome, wealthy boyfriend are bad.

  427. 00:08:22:25 - 00:08:24:02

  428. She realizes Christmas is good.

  429. 00:08:24:02 - 00:08:26:15

  430. Homeless guys are great.

  431. 00:08:26:15 - 00:08:29:02

  432. They fall in love. They kiss. It snows.

  433. 00:08:29:02 - 00:08:29:44

  434. The end.

  435. 00:08:31:24 - 00:08:34:17

  436. That's every hallmark movie ever made.

  437. 00:08:34:17 - 00:08:36:01

  438. And sometimes

  439. when I'm watching with my wife

  440. 00:08:36:01 - 00:08:38:27

  441. five minutes

  442. in, I tell her what the plot is.

  443. 00:08:38:27 - 00:08:41:27

  444. And she's always like,

  445. how did you guess that?

  446. 00:08:41:43 - 00:08:44:19

  447. And I'm like, how did you not guess that?

  448. 00:08:44:19 - 00:08:48:18

  449. Even if I haven't seen this one,

  450. I've seen this one, right?

  451. 00:08:48:18 - 00:08:50:12

  452. And I'll say to her,

  453. why do you like these?

  454. 00:08:50:12 - 00:08:52:01

  455. They're so formal.

  456. 00:08:52:01 - 00:08:52:59

  457. And she has a great answer.

  458. 00:08:52:59 - 00:08:57:21

  459. She says, but it's a good formula,

  460. and I think she's right.

  461. 00:08:57:54 - 00:08:58:59

  462. That's how stories work.

  463. 00:08:58:59 - 00:09:01:58

  464. Like every Christmas

  465. I watch It's a Wonderful Life.

  466. 00:09:02:04 - 00:09:03:59

  467. I know what's going to happen.

  468. 00:09:03:59 - 00:09:05:56

  469. I know how things are going to end.

  470. 00:09:05:56 - 00:09:07:17

  471. For George Bailey.

  472. 00:09:07:17 - 00:09:11:43

  473. I watch A Christmas Carol, the George C

  474. Scott version, the true version,

  475. 00:09:12:01 - 00:09:16:22

  476. and I know how things are going to go

  477. for Scrooge, but that's why I watch them,

  478. 00:09:16:54 - 00:09:21:00

  479. because these stories are full of low

  480. moments,

  481. 00:09:21:29 - 00:09:24:04

  482. difficult chapters.

  483. 00:09:24:04 - 00:09:25:26

  484. I know that's how life works.

  485. 00:09:25:26 - 00:09:27:02

  486. You know that's how life works.

  487. 00:09:27:02 - 00:09:31:01

  488. But I also know that

  489. even though the moment might be long,

  490. 00:09:31:03 - 00:09:36:10

  491. even though the chapter might be hard,

  492. I know we're headed somewhere great.

  493. 00:09:36:10 - 00:09:40:29

  494. So I hang in there because I know

  495. the ending is going to make it worth it.

  496. 00:09:40:29 - 00:09:42:08

  497. You see, here's what the wise men know.

  498. 00:09:42:08 - 00:09:45:08

  499. If God sent a star,

  500. 00:09:45:51 - 00:09:48:51

  501. if God sent a king,

  502. 00:09:49:00 - 00:09:52:27

  503. then that means that human history is not

  504. random.

  505. 00:09:53:13 - 00:09:55:12

  506. It's not chaos.

  507. 00:09:55:12 - 00:09:56:55

  508. It's not arbitrary.

  509. 00:09:56:55 - 00:10:00:32

  510. It means that God is writing a story.

  511. 00:10:00:54 - 00:10:04:11

  512. And if God is writing a story,

  513. then it means I'm not random.

  514. 00:10:04:20 - 00:10:07:40

  515. It means no matter how low the chapter,

  516. no matter how low the moment

  517. 00:10:07:44 - 00:10:12:31

  518. or how difficult the season,

  519. we are headed somewhere good.

  520. 00:10:12:31 - 00:10:16:29

  521. You see,

  522. Christmas is a reminder to us every year

  523. 00:10:16:38 - 00:10:19:38

  524. that God is writing a story.

  525. 00:10:20:06 - 00:10:23:46

  526. You know, the Bible never tells you to

  527. pretend the season you're in isn't hard.

  528. 00:10:24:22 - 00:10:27:23

  529. It never tells you to cover your ears,

  530. cover your eyes.

  531. 00:10:27:23 - 00:10:29:40

  532. Pretend everything is okay.

  533. 00:10:29:40 - 00:10:31:37

  534. Pretend you're not lonely.

  535. 00:10:31:37 - 00:10:34:51

  536. Pretend

  537. you don't wish you had a family to go to,

  538. 00:10:34:51 - 00:10:38:20

  539. or wish you weren't

  540. going to see your family.

  541. 00:10:38:20 - 00:10:40:42

  542. To pretend

  543. you don't miss that family member

  544. 00:10:40:42 - 00:10:43:59

  545. that you won't see this Christmas

  546. because they're no longer with us.

  547. 00:10:43:59 - 00:10:45:56

  548. The Bible never asks us to pretend.

  549. 00:10:45:56 - 00:10:50:03

  550. It says, look, some moments are low,

  551. some chapters are hard.

  552. 00:10:50:08 - 00:10:54:40

  553. What it tells us

  554. every Christmas is if God sent his son,

  555. 00:10:55:44 - 00:10:57:57

  556. then life is a story.

  557. 00:10:57:57 - 00:11:02:15

  558. And stories are always headed somewhere

  559. great.

  560. 00:11:02:56 - 00:11:05:56

  561. Do you need to hear that this year?

  562. 00:11:06:50 - 00:11:09:50

  563. You are not random.

  564. 00:11:10:11 - 00:11:12:42

  565. Life is not chaos.

  566. 00:11:12:42 - 00:11:15:42

  567. God is writing a story.

  568. 00:11:16:16 - 00:11:18:51

  569. Now you might be thinking,

  570. well man, that's a beautiful thought

  571. 00:11:18:51 - 00:11:22:43

  572. that God is writing a story,

  573. that human history is headed somewhere.

  574. 00:11:22:43 - 00:11:27:09

  575. But but even if God is writing a story,

  576. how could I ever believe?

  577. 00:11:27:09 - 00:11:28:42

  578. How could I ever know that?

  579. 00:11:28:42 - 00:11:31:21

  580. That he wants me to be part of it?

  581. 00:11:31:21 - 00:11:35:16

  582. I mean, maybe he's writing a story for

  583. some people, but not for people like me.

  584. 00:11:35:16 - 00:11:38:11

  585. Well, that's actually my second point.

  586. Not just the source of joy.

  587. 00:11:38:11 - 00:11:42:15

  588. God is writing a story,

  589. but the reach of joy.

  590. 00:11:43:04 - 00:11:46:14

  591. You see, sometimes we read a story

  592. and we think we know it,

  593. 00:11:46:14 - 00:11:52:05

  594. but we don't like just

  595. who are these wise men?

  596. 00:11:52:05 - 00:11:53:10

  597. Look, look with me.

  598. 00:11:53:10 - 00:11:55:23

  599. How they're described in chapter one

  600. and two.

  601. 00:11:55:23 - 00:11:59:53

  602. Here's what it says now,

  603. after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea

  604. 00:12:00:14 - 00:12:04:33

  605. in the days of Herod

  606. the king, behold, wise men from the east

  607. 00:12:04:51 - 00:12:10:06

  608. came to Jerusalem, saying, where is he

  609. who has been born king of the Jews?

  610. 00:12:10:34 - 00:12:14:12

  611. For we saw his star when it rose,

  612. and we've come to worship.

  613. 00:12:14:12 - 00:12:17:26

  614. And we read that phrase,

  615. wise men from the East.

  616. 00:12:17:26 - 00:12:18:54

  617. And I know what you're picturing

  618. 00:12:18:54 - 00:12:23:24

  619. turbans and beards

  620. and these guys that go around quoting

  621. 00:12:23:24 - 00:12:27:56

  622. like pithy one liners all the time,

  623. but that's not who they were.

  624. 00:12:28:06 - 00:12:31:06

  625. So you have to understand

  626. that Matthew was written,

  627. 00:12:31:06 - 00:12:34:28

  628. Matthew is a story of Jesus life, death

  629. and resurrection.

  630. 00:12:34:28 - 00:12:37:49

  631. It's written to a first century

  632. Jewish audience.

  633. 00:12:38:09 - 00:12:40:47

  634. One of the ways we know that

  635. is that throughout the Gospel of Matthew,

  636. 00:12:40:47 - 00:12:43:34

  637. he quotes the Old Testament time

  638. and time again.

  639. 00:12:43:34 - 00:12:46:34

  640. He's assuming that his audience is Jewish.

  641. 00:12:46:45 - 00:12:50:44

  642. So the question isn't, what do you think

  643. of when you read wisemen from the East?

  644. 00:12:50:44 - 00:12:53:55

  645. The question is,

  646. what would a first century Jewish

  647. 00:12:53:55 - 00:12:57:25

  648. person have thought of

  649. when they read wisemen from the East?

  650. 00:12:57:25 - 00:13:01:04

  651. Like, for example,

  652. these guys are most likely from Babylon

  653. 00:13:02:07 - 00:13:02:51

  654. now Babylon.

  655. 00:13:02:51 - 00:13:05:50

  656. If you don't know much about the Bible,

  657. Babylon is the place

  658. 00:13:05:50 - 00:13:10:29

  659. where Israel just came out

  660. of after living in exile.

  661. 00:13:10:29 - 00:13:13:33

  662. They're basically slave

  663. holders, oppressors.

  664. 00:13:13:43 - 00:13:15:19

  665. They're the bad guys.

  666. 00:13:15:19 - 00:13:18:33

  667. In the book of revelation, Satan's kingdom

  668. 00:13:18:33 - 00:13:22:21

  669. is referred to as the great Babylon.

  670. 00:13:22:52 - 00:13:24:31

  671. Okay, that's that's Babylon.

  672. 00:13:24:31 - 00:13:27:59

  673. You know how if you're a child of the 80s

  674. or 90s, every bad guy in

  675. 00:13:27:59 - 00:13:30:59

  676. every movie was Russian.

  677. 00:13:31:17 - 00:13:34:15

  678. If they had made first century

  679. Jewish movies,

  680. 00:13:34:15 - 00:13:37:36

  681. Sylvester Stallone

  682. would have been fighting the Babylonians.

  683. 00:13:37:58 - 00:13:42:03

  684. They would have been the bad guys, not

  685. only, though, are these guys Babylonians.

  686. 00:13:42:03 - 00:13:48:08

  687. They're not Jewish, which means they don't

  688. believe the Old Testament is God's word.

  689. 00:13:48:20 - 00:13:50:39

  690. They're not sitting around

  691. waiting for the Messiah.

  692. 00:13:50:39 - 00:13:51:52

  693. They don't keep the law.

  694. 00:13:51:52 - 00:13:53:56

  695. They don't follow the Torah.

  696. 00:13:53:56 - 00:13:58:48

  697. Not only are they Babylonians

  698. who are pagans, but they're astrologers.

  699. 00:13:59:33 - 00:14:03:41

  700. They look to the stars for the answers

  701. about what's coming in the future,

  702. 00:14:03:43 - 00:14:06:55

  703. something

  704. the Old Testament expressly forbids,

  705. 00:14:07:18 - 00:14:11:05

  706. something that can even

  707. have you killed in the Old Testament.

  708. 00:14:11:28 - 00:14:12:49

  709. So why do I say that?

  710. 00:14:12:49 - 00:14:14:46

  711. You see,

  712. when you read wisemen from the East,

  713. 00:14:14:46 - 00:14:17:30

  714. if you think turbans and beards,

  715. you will say,

  716. 00:14:17:30 - 00:14:21:04

  717. even if God is writing a story, it's

  718. not for people like me.

  719. 00:14:21:09 - 00:14:23:10

  720. But if when you read wisemen

  721. from the East,

  722. 00:14:23:10 - 00:14:26:28

  723. you think people from the wrong country,

  724. with the wrong religion,

  725. 00:14:26:31 - 00:14:30:50

  726. from the wrong background,

  727. you'll realize the whole reason they're in

  728. 00:14:30:50 - 00:14:33:50

  729. the story

  730. is so that you know you can be to.

  731. 00:14:34:11 - 00:14:37:33

  732. But let me give you just a story from

  733. my own life that will illustrate this.

  734. 00:14:38:03 - 00:14:41:30

  735. My wife, Amy and I a couple of years ago

  736. attended a fundraising event

  737. 00:14:41:50 - 00:14:44:37

  738. at which Tim

  739. Tebow was the keynote speaker.

  740. 00:14:44:37 - 00:14:46:14

  741. If you don't know who Tim Tebow

  742. 00:14:46:14 - 00:14:49:45

  743. is, the Heisman Trophy winning quarterback

  744. from the University of Florida.

  745. 00:14:49:45 - 00:14:53:17

  746. I remember him as a quarterback

  747. who beat the Steelers in the playoffs.

  748. 00:14:53:17 - 00:14:55:26

  749. You can remember him however you want.

  750. 00:14:55:26 - 00:14:57:54

  751. Great guy.

  752. He did an awesome job at the event.

  753. 00:14:57:54 - 00:15:01:22

  754. Now at this event,

  755. Amy and I are sitting at the VIP table.

  756. 00:15:01:40 - 00:15:04:40

  757. You're probably looking at me

  758. going, why, that's a great question.

  759. 00:15:04:51 - 00:15:07:04

  760. Okay, it wasn't because we were important.

  761. 00:15:07:04 - 00:15:10:04

  762. The people we were with were important.

  763. 00:15:10:06 - 00:15:11:48

  764. We didn't have any money to give.

  765. 00:15:11:48 - 00:15:13:36

  766. We weren't going to give any money.

  767. 00:15:13:36 - 00:15:16:22

  768. We were just kind of like their plus one

  769. and plus two.

  770. 00:15:16:22 - 00:15:19:50

  771. So after Tim gets done talking,

  772. then we're all eating dessert,

  773. 00:15:19:50 - 00:15:22:07

  774. like, all in this ballroom

  775. or wherever we are.

  776. 00:15:22:07 - 00:15:24:49

  777. And his handlers

  778. bring him down off the stage

  779. 00:15:24:49 - 00:15:28:48

  780. and bring him to the VIP table

  781. so he can meet all the VIPs.

  782. 00:15:28:48 - 00:15:30:14

  783. And he's going around the table

  784. 00:15:30:14 - 00:15:33:14

  785. shaking everybody's hand, saying,

  786. hey, I'm Tim, thanks for being here.

  787. 00:15:33:16 - 00:15:34:31

  788. Thanks for giving money.

  789. 00:15:34:31 - 00:15:37:33

  790. He shakes everyone's hand at the VIP table

  791. but skips,

  792. 00:15:37:33 - 00:15:40:33

  793. Amy and I, they

  794. they his handlers don't bring them to us.

  795. 00:15:40:38 - 00:15:41:32

  796. Don't bring him to us.

  797. 00:15:41:32 - 00:15:43:47

  798. They take him to the next VIP table.

  799. 00:15:43:47 - 00:15:45:11

  800. We weren't offended, right?

  801. 00:15:45:11 - 00:15:46:56

  802. Because we knew we weren't important.

  803. 00:15:46:56 - 00:15:49:23

  804. They knew

  805. we weren't going to give any money we got.

  806. 00:15:49:23 - 00:15:52:21

  807. It was just cool to be close to him

  808. and that way.

  809. 00:15:52:21 - 00:15:55:57

  810. But about 30 seconds after

  811. he leaves our table to go to the next one,

  812. 00:15:56:06 - 00:15:59:06

  813. he leaves his handlers

  814. and comes back to Amy

  815. 00:15:59:06 - 00:16:02:13

  816. and I shakes our hand and says,

  817. hey, I'm Tim, I realized I missed you.

  818. 00:16:02:25 - 00:16:04:17

  819. Thanks so much for being here.

  820. 00:16:04:17 - 00:16:05:29

  821. It was awesome.

  822. 00:16:05:29 - 00:16:06:43

  823. But man, it was apparent.

  824. 00:16:06:43 - 00:16:10:33

  825. I thought, what did his parents teach him

  826. and how do I teach it to my kids?

  827. 00:16:10:33 - 00:16:12:24

  828. It was very, very cool,

  829. 00:16:12:24 - 00:16:15:53

  830. and I can't think of a better metaphor

  831. for why the wise men are in this story.

  832. 00:16:16:43 - 00:16:19:43

  833. Because you and

  834. I think if God is writing a story in human

  835. 00:16:19:43 - 00:16:22:48

  836. history,

  837. it's for people sitting at the VIP table.

  838. 00:16:23:33 - 00:16:25:52

  839. But every Christmas,

  840. God comes back to our table,

  841. 00:16:27:20 - 00:16:29:17

  842. puts his hand out and says, hey,

  843. 00:16:29:17 - 00:16:33:50

  844. I'm writing a story

  845. and there's a place in it for you.

  846. 00:16:34:44 - 00:16:39:39

  847. Even if you're a Babylonian pagan

  848. sorcerer, there's a place in it for you.

  849. 00:16:39:39 - 00:16:42:39

  850. Even if you're divorced,

  851. 00:16:42:51 - 00:16:45:51

  852. even if you're alone this Christmas,

  853. and it's your fault.

  854. 00:16:46:47 - 00:16:49:47

  855. Even if you have the wrong

  856. religious background,

  857. 00:16:50:21 - 00:16:53:37

  858. even if you're ashamed or guilty

  859. 00:16:54:16 - 00:16:56:37

  860. or broken, there's a place in it for you.

  861. 00:16:56:37 - 00:16:58:01

  862. Now, I know you might be thinking,

  863. 00:16:58:01 - 00:17:01:49

  864. well, listen,

  865. good for these Babylonian sorcerers, but.

  866. 00:17:01:57 - 00:17:04:06

  867. But they had a star in the sky.

  868. 00:17:04:06 - 00:17:05:43

  869. That's how they knew they were included.

  870. 00:17:05:43 - 00:17:09:15

  871. And if I had a star,

  872. then maybe I would believe.

  873. 00:17:09:15 - 00:17:12:08

  874. Well,

  875. first of all, don't overestimate the star.

  876. 00:17:12:08 - 00:17:15:20

  877. Because, as we'll see in a minute, a

  878. lot of people don't know what's going on.

  879. 00:17:15:53 - 00:17:18:44

  880. It wasn't that demonstrative.

  881. 00:17:18:44 - 00:17:21:16

  882. But what I want you to see

  883. is that the wise

  884. 00:17:21:16 - 00:17:24:36

  885. men themselves are your star.

  886. 00:17:26:24 - 00:17:27:59

  887. They're the neon sign in the

  888. 00:17:27:59 - 00:17:30:59

  889. story of God saying, you,

  890. 00:17:31:48 - 00:17:35:54

  891. you, you see,

  892. the reach of joy is for anybody,

  893. 00:17:36:57 - 00:17:42:21

  894. for everyone who wants to be included.

  895. 00:17:42:51 - 00:17:48:04

  896. So if this Christmas, it feels like

  897. everyone else is sitting at God's table.

  898. 00:17:48:04 - 00:17:51:06

  899. They all have homes full of joy

  900. and happiness

  901. 00:17:51:06 - 00:17:54:58

  902. and presence and fun,

  903. and you don't have any of those things.

  904. 00:17:54:58 - 00:17:57:50

  905. And if you feel like even for a moment,

  906. I understand,

  907. 00:17:57:50 - 00:17:59:18

  908. I understand

  909. God gives things to those people.

  910. 00:17:59:18 - 00:18:01:06

  911. He doesn't give things to me.

  912. God includes them.

  913. 00:18:01:06 - 00:18:01:57

  914. He doesn't include me.

  915. 00:18:01:57 - 00:18:02:42

  916. Here comes God.

  917. 00:18:02:42 - 00:18:05:22

  918. Back to your table handout this Christmas.

  919. 00:18:05:22 - 00:18:08:21

  920. Yet again saying no, no, no no no.

  921. 00:18:10:06 - 00:18:11:48

  922. I am God,

  923. 00:18:11:48 - 00:18:16:20

  924. I'm writing a story

  925. and there's a room for you in it.

  926. 00:18:17:11 - 00:18:18:31

  927. And you might be thinking, what?

  928. 00:18:20:44 - 00:18:23:12

  929. How do I how do I get into it?

  930. 00:18:23:12 - 00:18:24:34

  931. Then what's my third point?

  932. 00:18:24:34 - 00:18:26:33

  933. Actually, not just the source of joy.

  934. 00:18:26:33 - 00:18:29:38

  935. God is writing a story,

  936. not just the reach of joy for anyone

  937. 00:18:29:38 - 00:18:33:27

  938. and everyone who wants to be included,

  939. even Babylonian pagan

  940. 00:18:33:27 - 00:18:36:41

  941. sorcerers, but also the path to joy.

  942. 00:18:37:24 - 00:18:40:24

  943. First thing I want you to notice is not

  944. everybody gets it.

  945. 00:18:40:42 - 00:18:43:00

  946. Pick it up in verse three,

  947. we'll see some people that are left out.

  948. 00:18:43:00 - 00:18:44:39

  949. Here's what it says.

  950. 00:18:44:39 - 00:18:47:39

  951. When Herod the king heard this,

  952. he was troubled

  953. 00:18:48:04 - 00:18:52:14

  954. and all Jerusalem with him, and assembling

  955. all the chief priests and the scribes

  956. 00:18:52:14 - 00:18:55:48

  957. of the people, he inquired of them

  958. where the Christ was to be born.

  959. 00:18:55:57 - 00:18:58:57

  960. And they told him, in Bethlehem of Judea.

  961. 00:18:59:13 - 00:19:02:24

  962. For so it is written by the prophet,

  963. and you, O Bethlehem,

  964. 00:19:02:40 - 00:19:06:43

  965. in the land of Judah, are by no means

  966. least among the rulers of Judah.

  967. 00:19:06:43 - 00:19:10:38

  968. For from you shall come a ruler

  969. who will shepherd my people Israel.

  970. 00:19:11:01 - 00:19:14:57

  971. Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly,

  972. and ascertained from them what time

  973. 00:19:15:06 - 00:19:16:20

  974. the star had appeared.

  975. 00:19:16:20 - 00:19:20:30

  976. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying,

  977. go and search diligently for the child.

  978. 00:19:20:35 - 00:19:25:08

  979. And when you have found him, bring me word

  980. that I too may come and worship him.

  981. 00:19:25:08 - 00:19:26:44

  982. Of course,

  983. we know that's not what he has in mind.

  984. 00:19:26:44 - 00:19:29:06

  985. He's going to murder

  986. all the children under two.

  987. 00:19:29:06 - 00:19:30:07

  988. Here's my point.

  989. 00:19:30:07 - 00:19:33:10

  990. Herod has all the information

  991. the wise men have.

  992. 00:19:35:05 - 00:19:38:05

  993. There's a star and a king.

  994. 00:19:38:09 - 00:19:40:38

  995. That's all everyone knows.

  996. 00:19:40:38 - 00:19:41:57

  997. But he misses it.

  998. 00:19:41:57 - 00:19:42:33

  999. But he misses it.

  1000. 00:19:42:33 - 00:19:47:21

1001. In fact, he goes to Bible study,

1002. and he has everybody at Bible study.

  1003. 00:19:47:35 - 00:19:50:35

1004. And they miss it too. Why?

  1005. 00:19:51:09 - 00:19:55:14

1006. What tells us Herod is the king is he.

  1007. 00:19:55:14 - 00:19:57:09

1008. He has a scarcity mindset.

  1009. 00:19:57:09 - 00:19:58:39

  1010. Herod is thinking,

  1011. wait a minute, wait a minute.

  1012. 00:19:58:39 - 00:20:01:39

  1013. I like my story.

  1014. 00:20:01:42 - 00:20:03:59

1015. In my story I'm king.

  1016. 00:20:03:59 - 00:20:08:36

1017. And if God is writing a story, then,

1018. then that threatens my story.

  1019. 00:20:08:36 - 00:20:10:18

1020. If God is writing a story, maybe.

  1021. 00:20:10:18 - 00:20:15:08

1022. Maybe he has less for me

1023. and so I have to get rid of it.

  1024. 00:20:16:22 - 00:20:18:40

1025. Now, can I tell you every year

  1026. 00:20:18:40 - 00:20:21:40

1027. all kinds of people make that choice?

  1028. 00:20:22:14 - 00:20:24:25

  1029. We like our story.

  1030. 00:20:24:25 - 00:20:25:25

1031. We want to be king.

  1032. 00:20:26:28 - 00:20:28:39

1033. We don't want God to threaten it.

  1034. 00:20:28:39 - 00:20:30:18

1035. And when you do that, you miss it.

  1036. 00:20:30:18 - 00:20:31:58

1037. The wise men don't know anything.

  1038. 00:20:31:58 - 00:20:35:50

1039. All they know is God is writing a story,

1040. but they have an abundance mindset.

  1041. 00:20:35:50 - 00:20:36:32

1042. They wait, wait a minute.

  1043. 00:20:36:32 - 00:20:41:09

1044. If God is writing a story,

1045. then surely it's better than the story.

  1046. 00:20:41:09 - 00:20:42:13

  1047. I have.

  1048. 00:20:42:13 - 00:20:45:56

1049. Let me put it to you this way

1050. I love to give Christmas gifts.

  1051. 00:20:46:14 - 00:20:49:50

  1052. I mean, I love it, I love it,

1053. I do all the shopping with my wife.

  1054. 00:20:50:28 - 00:20:53:56

  1055. I have a spreadsheet where I keep

1056. track of what we've got, each kid

  1057. 00:20:53:56 - 00:20:56:22

1058. and how much we spend so that it's even.

  1059. 00:20:56:22 - 00:20:57:43

1060. I know some of you think that's awesome.

  1061. 00:20:57:43 - 00:21:00:14

  1062. Some of you think

  1063. I'm a nerd. Haters. I don't care.

  1064. 00:21:01:30 - 00:21:02:29

1065. Friday is my day off.

  1066. 00:21:02:29 - 00:21:04:19

1067. We spent all Friday wrapping presents.

  1068. 00:21:04:19 - 00:21:05:41

  1069. I'm there. I'm wrapping with her.

  1070. 00:21:05:41 - 00:21:08:34

  1071. I even number them

1072. so they open them in the correct order.

  1073. 00:21:08:34 - 00:21:10:49

1074. You're welcome for that tip, by the way.

  1075. 00:21:10:49 - 00:21:14:39

1076. Okay, but I love it,

1077. I love it, which also means and fellow

  1078. 00:21:14:39 - 00:21:17:39

1079. gift givers, you'll get this

  1080. I hate Christmas lists

  1081. 00:21:18:44 - 00:21:21:31

1082. you like a terrorist list of demands.

  1083. 00:21:21:31 - 00:21:24:31

1084. Hey, if you want me to be happy,

1085. you'll get me these things.

  1086. 00:21:24:34 - 00:21:28:12

  1087. And I especially hate

1088. when someone says, just give me money.

  1089. 00:21:28:50 - 00:21:29:35

  1090. Just give me money.

  1091. 00:21:29:35 - 00:21:31:40

1092. Because it's like they're saying to me,

  1093. hey, Zach,

  1094. 00:21:31:40 - 00:21:35:49

  1095. I want your resources,

1096. but I know what's best for me now.

  1097. 00:21:35:49 - 00:21:39:08

1098. My kids asked for some things

1099. this Christmas, but the gifts?

  1100. 00:21:39:08 - 00:21:40:00

1101. I have two daughters right here.

  1102. 00:21:40:00 - 00:21:43:45

1103. I'm telling you, the gifts,

1104. they're going to blow their minds are

  1105. 00:21:43:45 - 00:21:45:01

1106. the ones they didn't ask for.

  1107. 00:21:46:18 - 00:21:47:35

  1108. You know why?

  1109. 00:21:47:35 - 00:21:50:35

1110. Because they asked for this.

  1111. 00:21:51:45 - 00:21:52:32

  1112. For my wife, Amy.

  1113. 00:21:52:32 - 00:21:54:56

  1114. Our love for them.

  1115. 00:21:54:56 - 00:21:57:29

  1116. It's here, it's here.

  1117. 00:21:57:29 - 00:21:59:04

  1118. They thought too little.

  1119. 00:21:59:04 - 00:22:00:02

1120. Can I tell you this?

  1121. 00:22:00:02 - 00:22:03:01

1122. That's the exact difference in this story.

  1123. 00:22:03:43 - 00:22:07:47

1124. Herod is king, and he thinks

1125. it could never be better than this.

  1126. 00:22:07:51 - 00:22:10:22

1127. If I give God my story,

  1128. if I enter God's story,

  1129. 00:22:10:22 - 00:22:13:29

1130. if I give God control,

1131. he'll give me less carrot.

  1132. 00:22:13:33 - 00:22:15:58

1133. Herod holds on to King and he dies.

  1134. 00:22:15:58 - 00:22:18:58

1135. And you know when he gets, he's

  1136. a footnote in history.

  1137. 00:22:19:25 - 00:22:22:25

1138. He's a bad guy in the greatest story

  1139. ever told.

  1140. 00:22:23:03 - 00:22:25:39

  1141. The wise men say,

1142. I don't know what God is doing,

  1143. 00:22:25:39 - 00:22:30:50

1144. but if God is writing a story, surely

1145. it's got to be better than the one I have,

  1146. 00:22:30:54 - 00:22:35:41

1147. and they become an integral part

1148. of the greatest story ever told.

  1149. 00:22:35:45 - 00:22:40:06

1150. How many of us are guilty of going to God

1151. and saying, just give me cash?

  1152. 00:22:42:06 - 00:22:43:25

1153. I want your power, God.

  1154. 00:22:43:25 - 00:22:44:50

  1155. I want your resources.

  1156. 00:22:44:50 - 00:22:46:25

1157. God, I want your help.

  1158. 00:22:46:25 - 00:22:49:25

1159. But I've got the story.

  1160. 00:22:49:54 - 00:22:52:54

  1161. I know what's best for me.

  1162. 00:22:53:01 - 00:22:56:13

1163. And if that's the mindset you take,

1164. you miss the joy of Christmas.

  1165. 00:22:56:55 - 00:23:01:13

1166. That's why you can come every year

1167. at this time, hear the story and miss God.

  1168. 00:23:01:13 - 00:23:04:42

1169. Because you want to be king. So do I.

  1170. 00:23:04:49 - 00:23:09:01

1171. But God says this story is missed

  1172. if you love yours.

  1173. 00:23:09:01 - 00:23:12:31

  1174. But anyone who's hungry

  1175. for a better story,

  1176. 00:23:12:37 - 00:23:16:38

1177. anyone who's desperate for the idea

  1178. that life isn't random,

  1179. 00:23:16:38 - 00:23:19:57

1180. that life is in chaos,

1181. that God is doing something

  1182. 00:23:20:33 - 00:23:23:33

1183. they find the joy of Christmas

  1184. 00:23:23:46 - 00:23:27:03

1185. because the wisemen had no idea

1186. that this little toddler boy

  1187. 00:23:27:03 - 00:23:31:37

1188. would become the sinless sacrifice of God

  1189. on the cross,

  1190. 00:23:31:58 - 00:23:36:32

  1191. that he would carry

1192. all the sins of being a Babylonian pagan

  1193. 00:23:36:37 - 00:23:42:10

1194. sorcerer, or an addict, or divorced

1195. or whatever shame you're carrying.

  1196. 00:23:42:10 - 00:23:45:40

1197. Or I'm carrying or whatever guilt

1198. we're carrying that he would become that,

  1199. 00:23:45:47 - 00:23:50:19

1200. and the God the Father would pour out

1201. his anger and wrath and judgment on him,

  1202. 00:23:50:19 - 00:23:53:55

1203. so that his dying words would be,

  1204. it is finished.

  1205. 00:23:54:04 - 00:23:54:52

  1206. And the three days

  1207. 00:23:54:52 - 00:23:58:37

1208. later, when he rose from the dead,

1209. he would say to Babylonian pagan

  1210. 00:23:58:37 - 00:24:03:00

1211. sorcerers in me you can be forgiven in me

  1212. you can be loved.

  1213. 00:24:03:07 - 00:24:05:43

1214. In me you can be included forever.

  1215. 00:24:05:43 - 00:24:09:03

  1216. Friends, every Christmas

1217. God is saying that the secret

  1218. 00:24:09:03 - 00:24:12:08

1219. to joy is to unclench your fist.

  1220. 00:24:14:34 - 00:24:15:35

  1221. To let go of

  1222. 00:24:15:35 - 00:24:20:08

1223. relationships or career path or choices

  1224. or patterns.

  1225. 00:24:20:12 - 00:24:22:05

1226. To open up your hand,

  1227. 00:24:22:05 - 00:24:27:05

1228. to put down your list and to say to God,

1229. I'll tell you what, you know me.

  1230. 00:24:27:25 - 00:24:30:12

1231. You see me, you love me.

  1232. 00:24:30:12 - 00:24:33:39

1233. Why don't you give me what you think

  1234. I need?

  1235. 00:24:36:44 - 00:24:38:30

  1236. Every Christmas,

  1237. 00:24:38:30 - 00:24:41:30

1238. God is saying that the path to joy

  1239. 00:24:42:15 - 00:24:44:12

1240. is to leave our little,

  1241. 00:24:44:12 - 00:24:47:12

  1242. insignificant, broken story

  1243. 00:24:48:08 - 00:24:50:57

1244. and enter into his through

  1245. 00:24:50:57 - 00:24:53:56

  1246. Jesus Christ, His son.

  1247. 00:24:54:09 - 00:24:54:52

1248. Let me pray for us.

  1249. 00:24:54:52 - 00:24:58:12

  1250. Father God,

1251. thank you so much for the inclusion

  1252. 00:24:58:30 - 00:25:01:30

1253. of the wise men from the East,

  1254. 00:25:01:46 - 00:25:05:00

1255. because their inclusion is my inclusion.

  1256. 00:25:06:52 - 00:25:10:06

1257. You're so kind and you're so gracious,

  1258. and you're so good

  1259. 00:25:10:16 - 00:25:14:12

1260. that you put these guys in the story

  1261. like a like

  1262. 00:25:14:12 - 00:25:18:36

1263. a neon sign saying to every hurting,

  1264. lonely, broken person.

  1265. 00:25:18:56 - 00:25:21:33

1266. I've come back to the table for you.

  1267. 00:25:24:14 - 00:25:25:44

1268. God, to the power of your Holy Spirit.

  1269. 00:25:25:44 - 00:25:29:56

1270. Would you unclench our fists,

1271. of our lives, of our stories,

  1272. 00:25:29:56 - 00:25:33:16

1273. of our choices, of our obedience

1274. so that we might come to you

  1275. 00:25:33:16 - 00:25:36:37

  1276. with an open hand

1277. and you might blow our minds

  1278. 00:25:37:18 - 00:25:40:18

1279. with your goodness and your grace.

  1280. 00:25:40:25 - 00:25:42:20

1281. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
