  1. 00:00:02:47 - 00:00:05:47

  2. John 1010 through 15.

  3. 00:00:07:06 - 00:00:08:12

  4. The thief comes

  5. 00:00:08:12 - 00:00:11:12

  6. only to steal and kill and destroy.

  7. 00:00:11:14 - 00:00:14:14

  8. I came that they may have life

  9. and have it abundantly.

  10. 00:00:14:28 - 00:00:16:02

  11. I am the good shepherd.

  12. 00:00:16:02 - 00:00:19:02

  13. The good shepherd

  14. lays down his life for the sheep.

  15. 00:00:19:20 - 00:00:22:46

  16. He who is a hired hand

  17. and not a shepherd, who does not own

  18. 00:00:22:46 - 00:00:26:22

  19. the sheep, sees the wolf coming

  20. and leaves the sheep and flees,

  21. 00:00:26:47 - 00:00:29:35

  22. and the wolf snatches them and scatters

  23. them.

  24. 00:00:29:35 - 00:00:33:05

  25. He flees because he is a hired hand

  26. and cares nothing for the sheep.

  27. 00:00:33:59 - 00:00:35:25

  28. I am the good Shepherd.

  29. 00:00:35:25 - 00:00:38:07

  30. I know my own and my own know me.

  31. 00:00:38:07 - 00:00:41:07

  32. Just as the father knows me,

  33. and I know the father.

  34. 00:00:41:32 - 00:00:44:32

  35. And I lay down my life for the sheep.

  36. 00:00:47:08 - 00:00:49:56

  37. Everybody, good morning

  38. and welcome to Christ Community Chapel.

  39. 00:00:49:56 - 00:00:50:35

  40. My name is Joe.

  41. 00:00:50:35 - 00:00:51:52

  42. I'm one of the pastors here.

  43. 00:00:51:52 - 00:00:53:46

  44. And, thanks for coming.

  45. 00:00:54:45 - 00:00:57:36

  46. Listen, we have people

  47. that are still trying to find seats.

  48. 00:00:57:36 - 00:00:59:37

  49. If you could squeeze

  50. in, that would be great.

  51. 00:00:59:37 - 00:01:00:43

  52. If you have a seat next,

  53. 00:01:00:43 - 00:01:04:02

  54. you could raise your hand,

  55. let people know that they can sit there.

  56. 00:01:04:47 - 00:01:05:16

  57. All right.

  58. 00:01:05:16 - 00:01:07:38

  59. It's good. It's

  60. a great. It's a great weekend.

  61. 00:01:07:38 - 00:01:13:04

  62. We are baptizing,

  63. 68 people, over this weekend.

  64. 00:01:13:20 - 00:01:13:45

  65. Yeah.

  66. 00:01:13:45 - 00:01:16:45

  67. You can run.

  68. 00:01:18:45 - 00:01:20:35

  69. And we'll get to that in a minute.

  70. 00:01:20:35 - 00:01:23:56

  71. But, we are in the middle of a ten week

  72. series.

  73. 00:01:23:56 - 00:01:26:56

  74. We're actually looking

  75. at what Jesus says about himself.

  76. 00:01:27:25 - 00:01:30:55

  77. This is the second week

  78. where we have been looking

  79. 00:01:30:55 - 00:01:33:55

  80. at the word picture of a shepherd

  81. with sheep.

  82. 00:01:34:15 - 00:01:37:15

  83. It's actually one of Jesus

  84. favorite metaphors.

  85. 00:01:37:26 - 00:01:40:18

  86. In the Gospel of Matthew,

  87. he tells his disciples

  88. 00:01:40:18 - 00:01:44:19

  89. that he has been sent

  90. for the lost sheep of Israel.

  91. 00:01:45:06 - 00:01:48:45

  92. In Luke chapter 15, he tells the story

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  93. of a shepherd at 100 sheep,

  94. 00:01:48:45 - 00:01:52:59

  95. and one wandered off, and the shepherd

  96. left the 99 to go after the one.

  97. 00:01:53:46 - 00:01:56:15

  98. And then here in John chapter ten,

  99. 00:01:56:15 - 00:01:59:18

  100. he calls himself the good Shepherd.

  101. 00:02:00:19 - 00:02:03:12

  102. And as soon as he would say that,

  103. 00:02:03:12 - 00:02:06:01

  104. everybody in his original audience

  105. would think of the same thing,

  106. 00:02:06:01 - 00:02:08:59

  107. all their minds

  108. would go to the same place,

  109. 00:02:08:59 - 00:02:12:10

  110. which was the most famous psalm,

  111. 00:02:12:44 - 00:02:15:10

  112. which is Psalm 23.

  113. 00:02:15:10 - 00:02:19:38

  114. The 23rd Psalm is still probably

  115. the most beloved psalm.

  116. 00:02:19:38 - 00:02:22:48

  117. It's the most requested psalm

  118. for funerals.

  119. 00:02:22:48 - 00:02:24:58

  120. And there's a reason for that.

  121. 00:02:24:58 - 00:02:27:29

  122. There's something, soothing, something

  123. 00:02:27:29 - 00:02:30:37

  124. wonderful about Psalm 23.

  125. 00:02:30:37 - 00:02:33:53

  126. It's like a goodness

  127. that settles into the room.

  128. 00:02:34:33 - 00:02:38:25

  129. And because it was in the minds

  130. of the original listeners to Jesus,

  131. 00:02:38:25 - 00:02:42:04

  132. I want it to be in your mind as we talk

  133. about Jesus being the good Shepherd.

  134. 00:02:42:21 - 00:02:43:27

  135. So I'm going to try something.

  136. 00:02:43:27 - 00:02:46:14

  137. I'm going to read Psalm 23.

  138. 00:02:46:14 - 00:02:49:14

  139. But I'd like to ask you

  140. just to close your eyes

  141. 00:02:49:20 - 00:02:52:25

  142. and let the words fall on

  143. you like a gentle rain.

  144. 00:02:53:04 - 00:02:54:40

  145. Listen to Psalm 23.

  146. 00:02:56:02 - 00:02:57:56

  147. The Lord is my shepherd.

  148. 00:02:57:56 - 00:03:00:05

  149. I shall not want.

  150. 00:03:00:05 - 00:03:03:05

  151. He makes me lie down in green pastures.

  152. 00:03:03:16 - 00:03:05:31

  153. He leads me beside still waters.

  154. 00:03:05:31 - 00:03:07:47

  155. He restores my soul.

  156. 00:03:07:47 - 00:03:10:49

  157. He leads me in paths of righteousness

  158. for his name's sake.

  159. 00:03:11:05 - 00:03:15:31

  160. Even though I walk through the valley of

  161. the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.

  162. 00:03:16:09 - 00:03:17:01

  163. For you are with me.

  164. 00:03:17:01 - 00:03:20:12

  165. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

  166. 00:03:20:44 - 00:03:23:49

  167. You prepare a table before me

  168. in the presence of mine enemies.

  169. 00:03:24:09 - 00:03:27:29

  170. You anoint

  171. my head with oil, my cup overflows.

  172. 00:03:27:57 - 00:03:31:44

  173. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me

  174. all the days of my life.

  175. 00:03:32:13 - 00:03:35:29

  176. And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord

  177. forever.

  178. 00:03:36:59 - 00:03:39:19

  179. There's something just wonderful

  180. about that.

  181. 00:03:39:19 - 00:03:41:12

  182. I didn't grow up with sheep.

  183. 00:03:41:12 - 00:03:44:12

  184. You probably didn't either,

  185. but it doesn't really matter,

  186. 00:03:44:59 - 00:03:48:02

  187. because there's something about that song

  188. that strikes a chord that runs

  189. 00:03:48:02 - 00:03:51:20

  190. very, very deep inside of every one of us.

  191. 00:03:52:03 - 00:03:54:45

  192. There's a longing that we have

  193. 00:03:54:45 - 00:03:57:23

  194. for someone to lead us

  195. 00:03:57:23 - 00:04:00:39

  196. and guide us

  197. and bring us to something that is good,

  198. 00:04:01:49 - 00:04:02:45

  199. somebody who will

  200. 00:04:02:45 - 00:04:06:12

  201. walk with us when life gets dark,

  202. 00:04:06:46 - 00:04:09:41

  203. someone who will restore our aching

  204. 00:04:09:41 - 00:04:12:40

  205. and weary hearts.

  206. 00:04:13:06 - 00:04:17:41

  207. And that runs so deep

  208. that if we if we don't find it in Jesus,

  209. 00:04:17:41 - 00:04:21:24

  210. we will spend our entire lives

  211. looking for it.

  212. 00:04:22:25 - 00:04:25:25

  213. And Jesus,

  214. when he's talking to his original hearers,

  215. 00:04:25:53 - 00:04:28:53

  216. he is saying that Shepherd

  217. who you long for

  218. 00:04:29:35 - 00:04:33:44

  219. to lead and love you,

  220. to protect and provide for you.

  221. 00:04:34:31 - 00:04:36:14

  222. I'm the one.

  223. 00:04:36:14 - 00:04:39:14

  224. I am the good shepherd.

  225. 00:04:39:50 - 00:04:43:58

  226. The passage we're looking at in

  227. John chapter ten is only six verses long.

  228. 00:04:44:19 - 00:04:47:57

  229. Let me read it again, and then I'll give

  230. you the three points that I want to cover.

  231. 00:04:48:49 - 00:04:53:10

  232. Sweet Jesus says, the thief comes

  233. only to steal and kill and destroy.

  234. 00:04:53:56 - 00:04:56:56

  235. I came that they might have life

  236. and have it abundantly.

  237. 00:04:57:11 - 00:04:59:00

  238. I am the good shepherd.

  239. 00:04:59:00 - 00:05:02:00

  240. The good shepherd

  241. lays down his life for the sheep.

  242. 00:05:02:06 - 00:05:06:17

  243. He was a hired hand and not a shepherd

  244. who does not own the sheep, sees

  245. 00:05:06:17 - 00:05:09:17

  246. the wolf coming,

  247. leaves the sheep and flees,

  248. 00:05:09:24 - 00:05:12:04

  249. and the wolf snatches them and scatters

  250. them.

  251. 00:05:12:04 - 00:05:15:17

  252. He flees because he's a hired hand

  253. and cares nothing for the sheep.

  254. 00:05:15:49 - 00:05:17:14

  255. I am the good shepherd.

  256. 00:05:17:14 - 00:05:19:47

  257. I know my own and my own know me.

  258. 00:05:19:47 - 00:05:22:41

  259. Just as the father knows

  260. me and I know the father.

  261. 00:05:22:41 - 00:05:25:10

  262. And I lay down my life for the sheep.

  263. 00:05:26:38 - 00:05:29:13

  264. My three points are really three truths

  265. 00:05:29:13 - 00:05:32:46

  266. and the three truths,

  267. if you will affirm these three truths.

  268. 00:05:32:47 - 00:05:35:52

  269. If you wake up tomorrow morning

  270. and you affirm

  271. 00:05:35:52 - 00:05:38:52

  272. and live by these three truths,

  273. your life will get better.

  274. 00:05:39:45 - 00:05:40:54

  275. All right.

  276. 00:05:40:54 - 00:05:43:13

  277. Here's the first truth.

  278. 00:05:43:13 - 00:05:44:46

  279. I'm a sheep.

  280. 00:05:44:46 - 00:05:47:32

  281. That's it. That's person. I'm a sheep.

  282. 00:05:47:32 - 00:05:50:31

  283. Second truth Jesus is the good shepherd.

  284. 00:05:50:55 - 00:05:54:31

  285. And the third truth is I am Jesus sheep.

  286. 00:05:55:20 - 00:05:57:23

  287. I first.

  288. 00:05:57:23 - 00:05:58:57

  289. I'm a sheep.

  290. 00:05:58:57 - 00:06:02:57

  291. You have probably been in a group

  292. where somebody has asked the question.

  293. 00:06:02:58 - 00:06:06:21

  294. Listen, if you could be any animal

  295. in the world, what would you be?

  296. 00:06:07:08 - 00:06:09:37

  297. I have asked that question to my kids

  298. when they were little.

  299. 00:06:09:37 - 00:06:12:19

  300. I ask it to my grandkids. Now,

  301. 00:06:12:19 - 00:06:13:09

  302. and let me tell you something.

  303. 00:06:13:09 - 00:06:15:56

  304. No one wants to be a sheep

  305. 00:06:17:46 - 00:06:20:15

  306. like nobody.

  307. 00:06:20:15 - 00:06:22:32

  308. They want to be all kinds of other things.

  309. 00:06:22:32 - 00:06:25:32

  310. But let me give you

  311. my first little insight.

  312. 00:06:27:14 - 00:06:30:36

  313. The reason that no one wants to be a sheep

  314. is the same reason

  315. 00:06:30:36 - 00:06:34:02

  316. Jesus chooses it as a metaphor

  317. to describe you

  318. 00:06:34:53 - 00:06:37:35

  319. and me.

  320. 00:06:37:35 - 00:06:39:24

  321. It's the same reason.

  322. 00:06:39:24 - 00:06:42:24

  323. Let me tell you a little bit about sheep,

  324. because I did some research.

  325. 00:06:43:11 - 00:06:45:10

  326. One of the reasons

  327. that people don't want to be a sheep

  328. 00:06:45:10 - 00:06:47:39

  329. is because sheep don't do

  330. well in the wild.

  331. 00:06:47:39 - 00:06:50:39

  332. There are no wild sheep.

  333. 00:06:50:58 - 00:06:51:42

  334. They are dependent.

  335. 00:06:51:42 - 00:06:53:51

  336. They need someone to care for them.

  337. 00:06:53:51 - 00:06:56:06

  338. Like, I, look out in my backyard.

  339. 00:06:56:06 - 00:06:58:23

  340. I have a lot of wildlife

  341. that go through my backyard.

  342. 00:06:58:23 - 00:07:00:14

  343. I've seen deer.

  344. 00:07:00:14 - 00:07:01:51

  345. I see deer pretty often.

  346. 00:07:01:51 - 00:07:04:01

  347. I've seen, raccoons.

  348. 00:07:04:01 - 00:07:06:16

  349. I've seen a wolf.

  350. 00:07:06:16 - 00:07:07:31

  351. Oh, no, not a wolf.

  352. 00:07:07:31 - 00:07:10:04

  353. I have seen a coyote. I've seen fox.

  354. 00:07:11:12 - 00:07:12:12

  355. If I looked out

  356. 00:07:12:12 - 00:07:15:11

  357. in my backyard and I saw a sheep,

  358. 00:07:15:11 - 00:07:18:11

  359. I would be going, that guy's in trouble.

  360. 00:07:18:20 - 00:07:21:06

  361. Because sheep just don't do

  362. well in the wild.

  363. 00:07:21:06 - 00:07:21:33

  364. That.

  365. 00:07:21:33 - 00:07:24:29

  366. The other thing is

  367. that sheep tend to wander

  368. 00:07:24:29 - 00:07:26:06

  369. and they don't

  370. have a good sense of direction.

  371. 00:07:26:06 - 00:07:28:15

  372. So they can't ever find their way back.

  373. 00:07:28:15 - 00:07:31:26

  374. That was the point of, Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  375. 00:07:31:55 - 00:07:33:34

  376. The shepherd had 100 sheep.

  377. 00:07:33:34 - 00:07:36:21

  378. The one wandered off,

  379. you know, one coming back.

  380. 00:07:36:21 - 00:07:38:56

  381. So he left the 99 to go find the one.

  382. 00:07:38:56 - 00:07:40:25

  383. Other animals find their way back.

  384. 00:07:40:25 - 00:07:41:27

  385. You know, you've you've probably

  386. 00:07:41:27 - 00:07:44:43

  387. all read stories about people

  388. who've taken their dogs on vacation.

  389. 00:07:44:43 - 00:07:46:29

  390. And for some reason,

  391. they forget their dog.

  392. 00:07:46:29 - 00:07:48:29

  393. And their dog finds its way back home.

  394. 00:07:48:29 - 00:07:51:00

  395. A thousand miles finds its way back home.

  396. 00:07:51:00 - 00:07:51:45

  397. Now a sheep.

  398. 00:07:51:45 - 00:07:53:03

  399. Sheep rounding the corner.

  400. 00:07:53:03 - 00:07:55:19

  401. It's gone and it's not coming back.

  402. 00:07:56:19 - 00:07:57:43

  403. Also, sheep have,

  404. 00:07:57:43 - 00:08:01:12

  405. no discretion over

  406. what's good for them and bad for them.

  407. 00:08:02:15 - 00:08:07:08

  408. A sheep will eat poisonous plants

  409. unless a shepherd leaves them.

  410. 00:08:07:08 - 00:08:10:33

  411. Which is why the psalmist says

  412. he makes me lie down

  413. 00:08:11:03 - 00:08:13:33

  414. in green pastures.

  415. 00:08:13:33 - 00:08:15:11

  416. And then this is something that was funny.

  417. 00:08:15:11 - 00:08:20:08

  418. I read this, that when it rains, and sheep

  419. have not been shorn in a while.

  420. 00:08:20:08 - 00:08:23:08

  421. Their wool gets,

  422. you know, really saturated with water.

  423. 00:08:23:47 - 00:08:26:19

  424. And when it thunders,

  425. the sheep gets scared

  426. 00:08:26:19 - 00:08:30:09

  427. and they will stick their noses

  428. into the wool of another sheep,

  429. 00:08:30:18 - 00:08:34:02

  430. and they can actually drown like that

  431. unless the shepherd

  432. 00:08:34:02 - 00:08:35:59

  433. goes and separates them.

  434. 00:08:35:59 - 00:08:37:05

  435. Nobody wants to be a sheep.

  436. 00:08:37:05 - 00:08:41:12

  437. Nobody wants to be compared

  438. to a sheep, compared to, a creature

  439. 00:08:41:12 - 00:08:47:12

  440. that wanders, that tends to not know how

  441. to get back to what is good.

  442. 00:08:49:16 - 00:08:50:55

  443. A a creature that

  444. 00:08:50:55 - 00:08:54:41

  445. doesn't know necessarily

  446. what's good for them or bad for them.

  447. 00:08:55:46 - 00:08:59:08

  448. A creature that does really stupid things

  449. every once in a while.

  450. 00:09:00:03 - 00:09:03:07

  451. And even though

  452. we have all those similarities with sheep,

  453. 00:09:03:07 - 00:09:06:07

  454. most of us

  455. we don't want to be compared to sheep.

  456. 00:09:06:57 - 00:09:10:40

  457. We want to think of ourselves as being,

  458. you know, pretty good decision makers.

  459. 00:09:10:40 - 00:09:14:59

  460. And and when we do that, even those of us

  461. who are Christians, we tend to treat

  462. 00:09:14:59 - 00:09:19:12

  463. Jesus like he's a consultant,

  464. like he's on retainer.

  465. 00:09:19:39 - 00:09:23:06

  466. So if we ever, you know, we pretty much

  467. are in control of our lives.

  468. 00:09:23:06 - 00:09:25:12

  469. And then every once while,

  470. we might make a decision

  471. 00:09:25:12 - 00:09:27:32

  472. that we know is so important,

  473. we need his help

  474. 00:09:27:32 - 00:09:30:36

  475. or we've made a bad decision,

  476. we need a way to get back.

  477. 00:09:30:36 - 00:09:32:36

  478. We don't know how to get back,

  479. 00:09:33:36 - 00:09:35:27

  480. but this is what's true.

  481. 00:09:35:27 - 00:09:38:05

  482. You will never, ever know

  483. 00:09:38:05 - 00:09:41:05

  484. Jesus as your good Shepherd

  485. 00:09:41:48 - 00:09:44:48

  486. until you're willing to embrace the truth

  487. 00:09:45:22 - 00:09:47:57

  488. that you're just the sheep.

  489. 00:09:47:57 - 00:09:51:27

  490. You're a sheep

  491. that is prone to wander, a sheep

  492. 00:09:51:27 - 00:09:55:39

  493. that needs a shepherd, and the listen,

  494. 00:09:55:39 - 00:09:58:51

  495. you have to embrace the idea

  496. that you're not even an exceptional sheep.

  497. 00:09:59:24 - 00:10:00:41

  498. I think we tend to what you like.

  499. 00:10:00:41 - 00:10:03:48

  500. You want to feel better, like you're

  501. a better sheep than the sheep that you're

  502. 00:10:03:48 - 00:10:06:48

  503. sitting around right?

  504. 00:10:06:48 - 00:10:09:24

  505. Tomorrow morning, when you wake up,

  506. 00:10:09:24 - 00:10:12:24

  507. this is the first truth

  508. I want you to just tell God.

  509. 00:10:13:00 - 00:10:14:25

  510. I want you to just admit to God.

  511. 00:10:14:25 - 00:10:16:40

  512. Listen, I'm a sheep.

  513. 00:10:16:40 - 00:10:18:45

  514. I know I'm very, very similar to a sheep.

  515. 00:10:18:45 - 00:10:21:40

  516. I know that I need a shepherd.

  517. 00:10:21:40 - 00:10:22:34

  518. That's the first truth.

  519. 00:10:23:53 - 00:10:26:53

  520. The second

  521. truth is Jesus is the good shepherd.

  522. 00:10:27:03 - 00:10:29:04

  523. He starts this passage out

  524. talking about other

  525. 00:10:29:04 - 00:10:32:13

  526. shepherds, that there are shepherds

  527. that are hired, shepherds

  528. 00:10:32:13 - 00:10:35:13

  529. that aren't necessarily

  530. good for the sheep.

  531. 00:10:35:49 - 00:10:38:38

  532. One of the things, you know,

  533. when I say that Psalm

  534. 00:10:38:38 - 00:10:42:24

  535. 23 hits a chord

  536. that runs really deep inside of us,

  537. 00:10:43:04 - 00:10:48:04

  538. what I mean is that every human being

  539. has this longing for someone

  540. 00:10:48:04 - 00:10:51:25

  541. who will protect and provide for him,

  542. who will love them, lead them.

  543. 00:10:52:36 - 00:10:56:02

  544. And that longing, if it's not met by

  545. Jesus, you'll look for it somewhere else.

  546. 00:10:56:04 - 00:10:59:24

  547. It's why the world is full of shepherds.

  548. 00:10:59:49 - 00:11:00:46

  549. How about this?

  550. 00:11:00:46 - 00:11:05:13

  551. In 2010, The New York Times

  552. came up with a word to describe people

  553. 00:11:05:13 - 00:11:08:23

  554. who fill social media content with

  555. 00:11:08:23 - 00:11:11:46

  556. content

  557. that actually impacts people's behavior.

  558. 00:11:12:15 - 00:11:15:15

  559. They called them influencers.

  560. 00:11:15:22 - 00:11:16:27

  561. That was 2010.

  562. 00:11:17:39 - 00:11:21:09

  563. A social media influencer is a shepherd

  564. 00:11:22:03 - 00:11:25:03

  565. and their followers are sheep.

  566. 00:11:25:46 - 00:11:27:21

  567. They will tell you what to eat.

  568. 00:11:27:21 - 00:11:28:37

  569. Sometimes literally.

  570. 00:11:28:37 - 00:11:34:10

  571. They'll tell you where to go, what to do

  572. in order to get what you really want.

  573. 00:11:34:11 - 00:11:35:23

  574. They're shepherds.

  575. 00:11:35:23 - 00:11:39:41

  576. Have you ever wondered

  577. where like, fashion trends come from?

  578. 00:11:40:40 - 00:11:44:14

  579. I was thinking, you know, I lived through

  580. the 70s, went to high school in the 70s.

  581. 00:11:44:14 - 00:11:48:22

  582. One of the things I was thinking

  583. of what I used to wear, and I remember

  584. 00:11:48:22 - 00:11:52:14

  585. wearing a silk shirt with clocks on it,

  586. and I have no idea why.

  587. 00:11:54:02 - 00:11:55:05

  588. Like, now I wear these.

  589. 00:11:55:05 - 00:11:56:01

  590. I have these shoes.

  591. 00:11:56:01 - 00:11:58:55

  592. These are my cool shoes.

  593. 00:11:58:55 - 00:12:00:48

  594. I don't know why they're cool,

  595. 00:12:00:48 - 00:12:03:48

  596. but they're cooler than the shoes

  597. I used to wear.

  598. 00:12:05:02 - 00:12:06:10

  599. Why do I think that

  600. 00:12:07:42 - 00:12:08:59

  601. I'm being influenced?

  602. 00:12:08:59 - 00:12:10:13

  603. You are being influenced.

  604. 00:12:10:13 - 00:12:10:47

  605. All the time.

  606. 00:12:10:47 - 00:12:13:47

  607. I watched a documentary

  608. called The Social Dilemma,

  609. 00:12:14:39 - 00:12:19:18

  610. and it's about the the power of Instagram

  611. and Twitter and Facebook.

  612. 00:12:19:18 - 00:12:22:18

  613. And I know those are older platforms,

  614. 00:12:22:48 - 00:12:24:31

  615. but the scariest quote

  616. 00:12:24:31 - 00:12:27:30

  617. in that whole documentary was this

  618. 00:12:27:30 - 00:12:30:02

  619. if the product is free,

  620. 00:12:30:02 - 00:12:32:33

  621. then you're the product.

  622. 00:12:32:33 - 00:12:34:49

  623. And what I was saying is

  624. 00:12:34:49 - 00:12:38:12

  625. the world is full of shepherds

  626. gathering sheep.

  627. 00:12:38:12 - 00:12:41:23

  628. I just read this

  629. that one out of eight people

  630. 00:12:42:03 - 00:12:46:56

  631. turn to AI to help them as life coaches.

  632. 00:12:48:58 - 00:12:51:38

  633. People looking for a shepherd.

  634. 00:12:51:38 - 00:12:54:16

  635. Jesus says the world is full of shepherds.

  636. 00:12:54:16 - 00:12:57:00

  637. There are hired hands.

  638. There are two kinds of shepherds.

  639. 00:12:57:00 - 00:12:58:30

  640. What he says is a hired hand.

  641. 00:12:58:30 - 00:13:01:48

  642. And then the owner of the sheep

  643. and the original audience

  644. 00:13:01:48 - 00:13:04:08

  645. that Jesus was speaking

  646. to would know the difference right away.

  647. 00:13:04:08 - 00:13:07:08

  648. They would understand

  649. exactly what Jesus was saying.

  650. 00:13:07:09 - 00:13:11:01

  651. The reason that Jesus said

  652. that a hired hand would run away

  653. 00:13:11:25 - 00:13:14:14

  654. if there was danger to the sheep,

  655. because the hired hand doesn't really care

  656. 00:13:14:14 - 00:13:17:14

  657. about the sheep,

  658. the hired hand is just trying to.

  659. 00:13:17:15 - 00:13:20:06

  660. They're making a living off the sheep.

  661. 00:13:21:09 - 00:13:23:44

  662. But the owners different.

  663. 00:13:23:44 - 00:13:25:07

  664. An owner of the sheep.

  665. 00:13:25:07 - 00:13:28:14

  666. His entire wealth was represented

  667. by the sheep.

  668. 00:13:28:14 - 00:13:30:07

  669. The sheep were his.

  670. 00:13:30:07 - 00:13:32:18

  671. Where his pride and joy,

  672. 00:13:32:18 - 00:13:35:18

  673. his glory and his treasure.

  674. 00:13:35:20 - 00:13:38:34

  675. And Jesus says, I am the good Shepherd

  676. 00:13:38:34 - 00:13:41:34

  677. who lays down his life for the sheep.

  678. 00:13:41:36 - 00:13:46:09

  679. This whole series we are heading

  680. toward Easter, where we celebrate

  681. 00:13:46:09 - 00:13:51:11

  682. the fact that Jesus lived in our place,

  683. died in our place, and resurrected.

  684. 00:13:51:52 - 00:13:57:02

  685. And we celebrate that because Jesus was

  686. and is our good Shepherd.

  687. 00:13:57:02 - 00:13:59:54

  688. Which means that

  689. if you went to the foot of the cross

  690. 00:13:59:54 - 00:14:02:54

  691. and you looked up at Jesus

  692. and you said, Shepherd,

  693. 00:14:03:28 - 00:14:05:32

  694. good Shepherd,

  695. 00:14:05:32 - 00:14:08:32

  696. why are you dying on the cross?

  697. 00:14:08:34 - 00:14:11:34

  698. Why is the father forsaking you right now?

  699. 00:14:12:24 - 00:14:15:06

  700. Jesus would say,

  701. 00:14:15:06 - 00:14:16:20

  702. I'm doing this for the sheep.

  703. 00:14:17:35 - 00:14:21:07

  704. I'm laying my life down for my sheep.

  705. 00:14:22:05 - 00:14:23:44

  706. And if you were to say to Jesus.

  707. 00:14:23:44 - 00:14:28:33

  708. But that doesn't make any sense,

  709. why would you give your life

  710. 00:14:29:08 - 00:14:34:17

  711. for witless, dumb, prone

  712. to wander, silly sheep?

  713. 00:14:35:00 - 00:14:37:33

  714. And Jesus would say,

  715. 00:14:37:33 - 00:14:40:33

  716. because they're my treasure.

  717. 00:14:40:36 - 00:14:42:19

  718. They're my treasure.

  719. 00:14:42:19 - 00:14:44:28

  720. That's what Jesus feels

  721. 00:14:44:28 - 00:14:46:19

  722. when he looks at you.

  723. 00:14:46:19 - 00:14:48:11

  724. Listen, that first truth.

  725. 00:14:48:11 - 00:14:52:12

  726. You know, I woke up this morning

  727. and I said to God, I'm a sheep.

  728. 00:14:52:57 - 00:14:54:29

  729. Not even an exceptional sheep.

  730. 00:14:54:29 - 00:14:55:46

  731. I'm just a sheep.

  732. 00:14:55:46 - 00:14:58:33

  733. That's a hard thing to really grab on to.

  734. 00:14:58:33 - 00:15:00:21

  735. That's a tough truth.

  736. 00:15:00:21 - 00:15:03:18

  737. But this second truth,

  738. Jesus is the good Shepherd,

  739. 00:15:03:18 - 00:15:06:17

  740. is the most wonderful truth

  741. anyone has ever heard.

  742. 00:15:07:00 - 00:15:07:44

  743. And that's the truth.

  744. 00:15:07:44 - 00:15:09:32

  745. I tell you.

  746. 00:15:09:32 - 00:15:11:39

  747. And that brings me to a third point,

  748. 00:15:11:39 - 00:15:14:39

  749. which is you are Jesus sheep.

  750. 00:15:14:59 - 00:15:16:45

  751. I'm Jesus sheep.

  752. 00:15:16:45 - 00:15:20:21

  753. You know, every Christmas,

  754. Christmas morning I pick up my Bible.

  755. 00:15:20:21 - 00:15:22:01

  756. I do the same thing.

  757. I've done it for years.

  758. 00:15:22:01 - 00:15:25:01

  759. I read the same passage

  760. for my to my family.

  761. 00:15:25:23 - 00:15:27:00

  762. It's from Luke chapter two.

  763. 00:15:27:00 - 00:15:28:23

  764. It's very familiar.

  765. 00:15:28:23 - 00:15:29:15

  766. It starts like this.

  767. 00:15:29:15 - 00:15:30:57

  768. And there were in the same region,

  769. 00:15:30:57 - 00:15:34:53

  770. shepherds abiding in the field,

  771. keeping watch over their flock by night.

  772. 00:15:35:13 - 00:15:37:02

  773. And lo,

  774. an angel of the Lord appeared to them.

  775. 00:15:37:02 - 00:15:39:46

  776. Glory of the Lord shone round about them.

  777. 00:15:39:46 - 00:15:41:30

  778. And then you know the rest of the story.

  779. 00:15:41:30 - 00:15:43:36

  780. They end up

  781. going to the manger, finding Jesus.

  782. 00:15:44:50 - 00:15:46:11

  783. But that story starts

  784. 00:15:46:11 - 00:15:49:59

  785. with shepherds

  786. in the middle of the night, out

  787. 00:15:49:59 - 00:15:55:01

  788. with their sheep, because shepherds

  789. would never leave their sheep.

  790. 00:15:56:46 - 00:16:00:16

  791. Listen, the Bible gives us a lot of titles

  792. for Jesus.

  793. 00:16:01:24 - 00:16:02:28

  794. He's a Savior.

  795. 00:16:02:28 - 00:16:05:14

  796. He's our Redeemer, he's our King.

  797. 00:16:05:14 - 00:16:07:08

  798. He's even our friend.

  799. 00:16:07:08 - 00:16:10:08

  800. But there may be no more

  801. comprehensive title

  802. 00:16:10:51 - 00:16:13:18

  803. than the title of Shepherd,

  804. 00:16:13:18 - 00:16:15:13

  805. because the shepherd

  806. is intimately involved

  807. 00:16:15:13 - 00:16:18:13

  808. in every aspect of a sheep's life.

  809. 00:16:18:53 - 00:16:19:27

  810. Get this.

  811. 00:16:19:27 - 00:16:25:12

  812. Let me just note this is the the key

  813. to having your life actually be changed.

  814. 00:16:25:32 - 00:16:29:29

  815. You can wake up tomorrow morning

  816. and you can believe that you're a sheep.

  817. 00:16:30:05 - 00:16:33:05

  818. You can believe that

  819. Jesus is the good Shepherd.

  820. 00:16:33:09 - 00:16:37:08

  821. But until Jesus is the shepherd

  822. in every area of your life,

  823. 00:16:37:08 - 00:16:38:18

  824. you will not have the life

  825. 00:16:39:19 - 00:16:41:10

  826. that you really want.

  827. 00:16:41:10 - 00:16:44:44

  828. You will not have the more

  829. the abundant life

  830. 00:16:45:17 - 00:16:47:57

  831. that Jesus is talking about

  832. 00:16:47:57 - 00:16:50:33

  833. and in any area of your life

  834. where you know that

  835. 00:16:50:33 - 00:16:53:49

  836. Jesus wants you to go one way

  837. and you're saying, well, I'm

  838. 00:16:53:49 - 00:16:56:53

  839. going to go this way, you need to know

  840. you are following a different shepherd

  841. 00:16:57:56 - 00:17:00:55

  842. and it won't take you

  843. where you really want to go.

  844. 00:17:02:15 - 00:17:05:13

  845. This is what I would suggest

  846. you do take your life.

  847. 00:17:05:13 - 00:17:09:21

  848. And just in every category,

  849. look at your social life,

  850. 00:17:09:21 - 00:17:13:18

  851. your sexual life, your financial life,

  852. your professional life, your family life,

  853. 00:17:13:18 - 00:17:16:18

  854. your recreational life,

  855. all those different places.

  856. 00:17:17:10 - 00:17:20:10

  857. And go to God and say, I'm a sheep.

  858. 00:17:20:58 - 00:17:22:38

  859. Jesus is the good shepherd.

  860. 00:17:22:38 - 00:17:25:38

  861. If I'm going to be Jesus sheep,

  862. just show me

  863. 00:17:25:39 - 00:17:27:43

  864. how you want me to live in this area.

  865. 00:17:27:43 - 00:17:29:33

  866. What you want me to do in this area?

  867. 00:17:29:33 - 00:17:32:27

  868. If you show me, I will follow you.

  869. 00:17:33:53 - 00:17:34:35

  870. You know, because

  871. 00:17:34:35 - 00:17:38:39

  872. I've been preparing for this message

  873. every morning I have been reciting

  874. 00:17:39:05 - 00:17:42:04

  875. the 23rd Psalm to myself.

  876. 00:17:42:08 - 00:17:45:31

  877. And there was something that hit me

  878. as strange I hadn't seen before.

  879. 00:17:45:46 - 00:17:47:51

  880. At the very end of that song.

  881. 00:17:47:51 - 00:17:50:51

  882. The psalmist says,

  883. surely goodness and mercy

  884. 00:17:50:53 - 00:17:53:53

  885. shall follow me all the days of my life.

  886. 00:17:54:52 - 00:17:57:18

  887. And I was thinking,

  888. that's the reason that struck me.

  889. 00:17:57:18 - 00:18:01:37

  890. As strange as goodness is something

  891. that I feel like I'm that I chase.

  892. 00:18:02:18 - 00:18:04:24

  893. That's what social influencers will say.

  894. 00:18:04:24 - 00:18:05:59

  895. Listen, if you do this, you will.

  896. 00:18:05:59 - 00:18:08:00

  897. You will end up finding goodness.

  898. 00:18:08:00 - 00:18:08:59

  899. You will find mercy.

  900. 00:18:08:59 - 00:18:11:34

  901. That's not what the psalmist says.

  902. 00:18:11:34 - 00:18:14:32

  903. The psalmist says, I follow Jesus

  904. 00:18:14:32 - 00:18:17:44

  905. and goodness and mercy chase after me.

  906. 00:18:18:45 - 00:18:22:00

  907. I don't know about you, but

  908. I would love to live my life in such a way

  909. 00:18:22:00 - 00:18:26:35

  910. that when I slow up or stop, it's goodness

  911. and mercy that hit me in the back.

  912. 00:18:28:12 - 00:18:31:12

  913. Listen, tomorrow morning when you wake up,

  914. 00:18:31:40 - 00:18:34:06

  915. affirm three truths.

  916. 00:18:34:06 - 00:18:36:55

  917. Say I'm a sheep.

  918. 00:18:36:55 - 00:18:38:27

  919. Not even an exceptional sheep.

  920. 00:18:38:27 - 00:18:41:16

  921. I'm just a sheep and I need a shepherd.

  922. 00:18:41:16 - 00:18:44:16

  923. Jesus is the good shepherd

  924. 00:18:45:49 - 00:18:47:44

  925. and I am Jesus.

  926. 00:18:47:44 - 00:18:49:11

  927. Sheep.

  928. 00:18:49:11 - 00:18:53:53

  929. And wherever he wants me to follow,

  930. I will follow and let goodness and mercy

  931. 00:18:54:34 - 00:18:57:34

  932. chase you all the days of your life.

  933. 00:18:58:21 - 00:19:00:54

  934. You pray with me,

  935. 00:19:00:54 - 00:19:04:20

  936. Lord Jesus, we come to you and,

  937. I am grateful.

  938. 00:19:04:39 - 00:19:06:26

  939. I'm grateful that you tell us

  940. 00:19:06:26 - 00:19:09:30

  941. the truth about ourselves,

  942. that we really are like sheep.

  943. 00:19:10:31 - 00:19:12:46

  944. And I am grateful

  945. you don't just leave us there.

  946. 00:19:12:46 - 00:19:16:16

  947. But you have come and said that

  948. you are the good Shepherd, the one who

  949. 00:19:16:16 - 00:19:20:55

  950. we long for, who can provide and protect,

  951. who can love and lead,

  952. 00:19:20:55 - 00:19:26:46

  953. who will walk with us in the darkness,

  954. who restore our aching and weary hearts.

  955. 00:19:27:57 - 00:19:29:26

  956. I pray for every person here.

  957. 00:19:29:26 - 00:19:32:24

  958. I pray that we will be your sheep.

  959. 00:19:32:24 - 00:19:36:41

  960. We will declare that truth

  961. and we will follow you wherever you lead.

  962. 00:19:37:20 - 00:19:40:20

  963. And let goodness and mercy chase us.

  964. 00:19:40:38 - 00:19:43:34

  965. Thank you. We pray this in your name.

  966. 00:19:43:34 - 00:19:44:02

  967. Amen.
