  1. Well, good morning, everyone.

  2. If we have any children that are going to Children's Church,

  3. they're being dismissed right now.

  4. Children's Church goes up through the third grade.

  5. So we're thankful our children have that opportunity.

  6. Speaking of children, my two-year-old,

  7. just about every time that I've been in the car with him recently

  8. or gone anywhere with him,

  9. whether it be the backseat of my truck or the aisles of Walmart,

  10. that he has been adamant on singing his favorite song

  11. at the top of his lungs.

  12. He has no sense of volume, especially in public places,

  13. and that always terrifies me to go out with him.

  14. But his favorite song recently has been Say Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yes

  15. to VVVBS, which, as you likely could guess or might be aware,

  16. that's a song from Vacation Bible School

  17. that we sang three months ago.

  18. That he's still singing at the top of his lungs

  19. everywhere we go, every time we get in my truck,

  20. he's like, VBS!

  21. And I'm like, not again.

  22. It's a great song, don't get me wrong,

  23. but you know, you just kind of think

  24. these things are going to be phases.

  25. My favorite song will come and go,

  26. like Vacation Bible School music,

  27. as great as it is during their week.

  28. It's a little old after a few months after that.

  29. So you just think these things are like phases.

  30. As parents, you really hope these things are phases,

  31. whether it be the terrible twos,

  32. the three-nager phase, the four-nado.

  33. You just expect these things are going to be phases

  34. that they go through and you get out of and survive.

  35. If you're married, you likely understand

  36. that the newlywed or honeymoon phase,

  37. that little time where you're madly in love,

  38. newly married, nothing wrong with your marriage whatsoever.

  39. But if you're like my wife,

  40. she quickly realized that being around me 24-7

  41. is much more different than just dating.

  42. My coworkers like to make fun of me

  43. because I'm constantly singing, humming,

  44. making sounds of all sorts throughout the day.

  45. And I'm sure that's very annoying

  46. from the top stairs of my office down below me.

  47. I'm sure it's annoying hearing me in the hallways.

  48. But you know who's stuck with me?

  49. My wife.

  50. Honeymoon phases end.

  51. There just comes a point where these phases,

  52. they come and go.

  53. And so as we as a church are working through the book of Acts,

  54. the first couple of chapters are incredible, right?

  55. The first couple of chapters, Jesus commissions,

  56. the disciples, the Holy Spirit descends,

  57. Peter preaches, and thousands are saved.

  58. They're going amongst the streets.

  59. They're preaching the gospel.

  60. People are being miraculously healed.

  61. There's persecution for sure,

  62. but they're fighting against it being bold.

  63. The first few chapters are incredible to read.

  64. But if you're like me,

  65. you're almost reading with a bit of realistic skepticism.

  66. Is this too good to be true?

  67. Will it last?

  68. Is the other shoe about to drop?

  69. Because as great as the story starts in Acts,

  70. most Christians I know have a different experience with church

  71. than what we read in the first few chapters of Acts.

  72. You know, we read of the clear presence of God,

  73. miraculous healings, absolute unity amongst all the people.

  74. Yet most Christians that I've ever met,

  75. their experience with other Christians in the church

  76. has sometimes been of disagreements and fallouts and drama and burnout

  77. to where if you're coming into this with your own perspective of church,

  78. you can kind of read,

  79. it's great to read what's happening,

  80. but is it going to last?

  81. Is it merely just a phase?

  82. Will the church survive?

  83. And so we kind of come to the end of chapter four

  84. and getting into the chapter of five,

  85. we finally get to see a little bit of a glimpse

  86. into the real tension the church is facing on the inside.

  87. But before we navigate that tension,

  88. I just want to say as clear as I can from the beginning,

  89. that if you're wondering if the church will survive,

  90. if the church will persevere,

  91. if the church will live,

  92. know this,

  93. the movement of the church that we've been reading about,

  94. it's not merely a phase,

  95. it is an act of God.

  96. Because God is in control

  97. and his mission cannot be derailed,

  98. it will continue,

  99. despite forces outside of the church like persecution,

  100. and even sources inside of it,

  101. like hypocrisy and drama.

  102. So let's jump back into the story this morning

  103. and continue our study,

  104. starting in chapter four,

  105. verse 32.

  106. We'll read the whole passage

  107. and then navigate through this text today

  108. with two primary gospel principles

  109. that I think kind of put things in perspective for us.

  110. So Acts chapter four,

  111. let's begin reading in verse 32.

  112. Now the full number of those who believed

  113. were of one heart,

  114. one soul,

  115. and no one said that any of the things

  116. that belonged to him was his own,

  117. but they had everything in common.

  118. And with great power,

  119. the apostles were giving their testimony

  120. to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus

  121. and great grace was upon them all.

  122. There was not a needy person among them,

  123. for as many as were owners of land or houses,

  124. they sold them and brought the proceeds

  125. of what was sold.

  126. And they laid it at the apostles' feet

  127. and it was distributed to each as any had need.

  128. Thus Joseph,

  129. who was also called by the apostles Barnabas,

  130. which means son of encouragement,

  131. a Levite,

  132. a native of Cyprus,

  133. he sold a field that belonged to him,

  134. brought the money

  135. and laid it at the apostles' feet.

  136. And here's where the story gets interesting.

  137. Chapter five, verse one.

  138. But a man named Ananias and his wife Sapphira

  139. sold a piece of property.

  140. And with his wife's knowledge,

  141. he kept back for himself some of the proceeds

  142. and brought only a part of it

  143. and laid it at the apostles' feet.

  144. But Peter said to Ananias,

  145. why has Satan filled your heart

  146. to lie to the Holy Spirit

  147. and to keep back for yourself

  148. part of the proceeds of the land?

  149. While it remained unsold,

  150. did it not remain your own?

  151. And after it was sold,

  152. was it not at your disposal?

  153. Why is it that you've contrived this deed in your heart?

  154. You've not lied to man, but to God.

  155. When Ananias heard these words,

  156. he fell down and breathed his last.

  157. And great fear came upon all who heard of it.

  158. Now the young man rose and wrapped him

  159. and carried him out and buried him.

  160. And after an interval of about three hours,

  161. his wife came in,

  162. not knowing what had happened.

  163. And Peter said to her,

  164. tell me whether you sold the land for so much.

  165. And she said, yes, for so much.

  166. But Peter said to her,

  167. how is it that you've agreed together

  168. to test the spirit of the Lord?

  169. Behold, the feet of those who buried your husband

  170. are at the door and they will carry you out.

  171. Immediately she fell down at his feet

  172. and breathed her last.

  173. And when the young men came in and found her dead,

  174. they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

  175. And great fear came upon the whole church

  176. and upon all who heard of these things.

  177. Now I bet so, right?

  178. You read through this passage

  179. and the tone has shifted from the unity

  180. and the healings and the great acts of God

  181. that have been happening

  182. to where now we're seeing some judgment.

  183. We're seeing some clear punishment from God.

  184. And a fear was beginning to fill the church.

  185. And while we'll get to chapter five in just a moment,

  186. I want to spend the first little bit here

  187. focusing in on the example of the church

  188. at the end of Acts 4.

  189. Because I believe if we kind of understand

  190. what's going on in chapter four,

  191. it gives us a platform to understand chapter five

  192. all the more.

  193. So in chapter four,

  194. we see some incredible things that are happening.

  195. Everyone who believed was of one heart and soul.

  196. They had all things in common

  197. and many were selling their fields and homes

  198. to meet the present physical needs of their neighbors.

  199. And it's a great reality to read

  200. of the church back then.

  201. But what does it mean of us today?

  202. Does this passage mean that I should sell

  203. all of my possessions and give them away?

  204. Does this passage tell me that it's wrong

  205. to have good things?

  206. Well, whose needs should we really be trying to meet?

  207. What needs are actually genuine?

  208. How do we really navigate these things?

  209. What does this passage really mean for us today?

  210. And while all those questions

  211. are really important questions to work through,

  212. practical applications,

  213. I wanna fight against something this morning

  214. inside my own heart.

  215. I wanna fight against the temptation of my own heart

  216. to jump straight to limiting the generosity for myself

  217. that I feel burdened to feel.

  218. You know, my flesh wants to approach this passage

  219. and it wants to immediately start to dissect things

  220. of like, all right,

  221. this passage is primarily descriptive

  222. rather than prescriptive, right?

  223. It's merely describing the actions of the church

  224. and God's people during this time and in this situation

  225. rather than prescribing it for all of us today

  226. and throughout all time.

  227. You know, my flesh wants to jump at this passage

  228. and start to really look at,

  229. well, this was generosity amongst Christians, right?

  230. Like, it's just brothers and sisters in Christ

  231. meeting the needs of other brothers and sisters in Christ.

  232. There really wasn't a compulsion

  233. to meet the needs of everyone in the world,

  234. just the select few that already are a part of the church.

  235. My flesh wants to jump straight

  236. to the aspect of this passage that says

  237. that the giving was voluntary.

  238. This isn't something that was mandated by the apostles.

  239. This is not some sort of church-sanctioned socialism

  240. that's happening.

  241. Like, I want to look at this and say it's voluntary.

  242. It's not something that all Christians had to be a part of.

  243. It was just something they got to choose.

  244. And my flesh wants to just jump straight at those questions

  245. and try to limit the generosity

  246. that I feel burdened to feel for myself.

  247. But recognize this,

  248. if my heart is jumping straight to this list of caveats

  249. and this list of excuses,

  250. trying to figure out

  251. who I actually have to show compassion to

  252. and who I have to be generous to or not,

  253. then I'm missing the point, right?

  254. Look, all of these are clear.

  255. Those are things I believe to be true.

  256. I believe this passage to be primarily descriptive

  257. rather than prescriptive.

  258. It is generosity within the Christian community.

  259. It was completely voluntary.

  260. But if my heart is jumping to this spot

  261. where I'm trying to figure out,

  262. well, who do I actually have to be generous to?

  263. My heart's not in the right place.

  264. And I would argue that if yours is there,

  265. then you're probably in a place with me.

  266. There's a clear gospel principle

  267. that comes out from the last part of chapter four.

  268. And that's that we must value people over possessions.

  269. We must value people over possessions.

  270. And if there's an inclination of my heart

  271. to put possessions over people,

  272. I've missed it, right?

  273. There's a lot of things that really have to come into play here.

  274. There are a lot of other biblical principles

  275. that we have to take into account

  276. in order to form a, I guess,

  277. a comprehensive understanding of stewardship.

  278. But if I miss this point

  279. that I need to value people over possessions,

  280. my life will not resemble the church of Acts chapter four.

  281. My life will not be in right standing with God.

  282. And so there's something we have to wrestle with

  283. even from this description of the early church

  284. is do we value people over possessions?

  285. David Platt in his book, Counter Culture,

  286. reminds us that as Christians,

  287. our greatest wealth is found in the gospel itself.

  288. For God has saved us from our sins

  289. and has given us new life with him.

  290. More importantly, Jesus Christ himself said

  291. in his sermon on the mount,

  292. that where your treasure is,

  293. there your heart will be also.

  294. And so if I'm reading this text

  295. and I'm really finding the murkiness

  296. of trying to figure out

  297. who do I have to show compassion to,

  298. who do I have to be generous with,

  299. then perhaps my treasure is not in the right spot.

  300. Perhaps my greatest treasure isn't in the gospel,

  301. maybe it's in what I own and what I have for myself.

  302. That's the crux of what we're struggling with here.

  303. We see a radical display of generosity

  304. in the DNA of the early church.

  305. And this demonstrates that they clearly had a greater compassion

  306. and held a greater value on the lives and needs

  307. of the people around them

  308. than they did on their material possessions.

  309. And this concept really makes zero sense

  310. if the Holy Spirit's not in it.

  311. That's why it's a gospel principle, right?

  312. This isn't something that's easy for us.

  313. It's not the natural tendencies of our heart

  314. to value people over possessions.

  315. I would imagine that if someone were to have

  316. a near-death experience,

  317. that what they place value on would change, right?

  318. These people who have these stories

  319. where they almost got killed in a car wreck

  320. or they almost went through this situation

  321. where they lost their life.

  322. There are these situations

  323. where people have these near-death experiences

  324. and all of a sudden,

  325. they start to value people more.

  326. They start to place a lot more value

  327. in the relationships they have,

  328. the family dynamic that they are a part of.

  329. They put a little lesser of a grip

  330. on their possessions and are more generous.

  331. People who have a near-death experience

  332. often have a different outlook

  333. on people and possessions and relationships

  334. than the normal person does.

  335. But can I remind us something as followers of Christ?

  336. That we haven't just had a near-death experience.

  337. We were dead and Christ made us alive.

  338. Christ didn't change our hearts.

  339. He gave us a new one altogether.

  340. Like each of us have to reconcile

  341. that there was a point in my life

  342. where I was destined for a place called hell

  343. because of my cosmic treason

  344. and rebellion against a one true,

  345. holy, perfect, almighty God

  346. in heaven that's above earth where I'm at.

  347. And I was against him

  348. and I was deserving of a place called hell.

  349. Yet Christ loved me in my sin enough

  350. to give his life for mine

  351. and give me life and forgiveness in his name.

  352. And not only has Christ done that

  353. in giving us a new heart,

  354. that new heart has now been filled,

  355. thanks to Acts chapter one and two,

  356. with the Holy Spirit that starts to change

  357. our outlook on community and gospel living.

  358. The gospel changes us.

  359. The gospel is good news for us

  360. because it changes our lives so much.

  361. And I recognize some other principles

  362. that every good and perfect gift

  363. comes from the Lord, right?

  364. James 1, 17.

  365. I recognize that God often rewards

  366. the hard labor, the toil that we put in.

  367. He often rewards our labor with fruit to be enjoyed.

  368. I recognize and understand

  369. that God's heartbeat for us

  370. is that we'll have life

  371. and have it abundantly from John 10, 10.

  372. But what good is it for us to have

  373. an abundance of scraps beneath our table

  374. for our neighbor to be dying down the street?

  375. What good is it for us to have

  376. an abundance of scraps beneath our table

  377. while our neighbor dies of hunger?

  378. That's the story of Lazarus and the rich man

  379. in Luke chapter 16, right?

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  380. Jesus tells this story of a rich man

  381. who dies and Lazarus, he dies as well.

  382. They both die and the rich man is in hellish torment

  383. while Lazarus is in everlasting peace.

  384. Turns out the rich man never placed his faith in God.

  385. His riches, his status, his worldly goods

  386. were insufficient to bring him eternal peace.

  387. And his cries from hell

  388. were for the salvation of his brothers,

  389. yet his cries came too late.

  390. What's the primary description of this rich man

  391. that leads us to the assumption

  392. that he has no relationship with God?

  393. It's that the rich man feasted in abundance

  394. while Lazarus, his neighbor, famished and died.

  395. How we value others, whether or not we value others,

  396. these play a part of the picture

  397. of whether or not we're actually

  398. genuine followers of Christ or not.

  399. Simply put, the works of our faith

  400. demonstrate the validity of it.

  401. So looking here, this passage,

  402. it may not be prompting each of us,

  403. it may not be an explicit command

  404. for each of us to sell our homes and land,

  405. but it does show us something very clear

  406. that when the Holy Spirit came into the lives

  407. of the early church,

  408. something was different about them.

  409. They began to value people over possessions.

  410. Which brings us to the question today is,

  411. do we?

  412. When it comes to the things that we have,

  413. do we have things or do things have us?

  414. Do we look at the ones around us

  415. and place a value on their lives

  416. to where we would be willing to meet their needs

  417. if possible or given the opportunity?

  418. Do we value people over possessions?

  419. Dustin Edmonds, the husband of the lady

  420. who did the prayer prompt earlier,

  421. Dustin Edmonds and I teach a group

  422. on Wednesday nights called Rediscover Church,

  423. and we're looking through some basic questions

  424. about the church.

  425. We're kind of working through those on Wednesday nights.

  426. And one of the questions that's come up

  427. the last few weeks is,

  428. is it really necessary for Christians

  429. to gather together?

  430. Is it really necessary for us to worship together,

  431. to come to church?

  432. Beyond that, is it even necessary

  433. for us to join in membership?

  434. These are questions we've been working through,

  435. and it sparked a real question for me,

  436. and that's how did these early Christians

  437. in Acts chapter four,

  438. how do they know about these needs

  439. around them anyway?

  440. Did they have some kind of like

  441. Facebook marketplace kind of thing

  442. where they saw all needs

  443. and they met a need

  444. and hashtag blessed and all?

  445. It wasn't like these things were happening

  446. where they were posting it around.

  447. How did they figure out the needs

  448. of those around them?

  449. They knew the ones around them.

  450. They gathered together

  451. in close-knit Christian community,

  452. and they knew about the needs

  453. because they knew one another.

  454. And going back to the question

  455. that kind of sparked from that,

  456. is it necessary for us to gather together?

  457. I say absolutely.

  458. One of the unavoidable realities

  459. is that in order to genuinely care about others

  460. and care about people,

  461. you have to be involved in each other's lives.

  462. Casual church attendance

  463. and nominal affiliation with the church

  464. doesn't cut it.

  465. It doesn't give us the exposure to one another

  466. where we're able to actually meet the needs

  467. of those around us.

  468. Now, I would actually argue

  469. that most of the New Testament writings,

  470. particularly in the epistles and the letters,

  471. most of that is we're not able to live it out

  472. apart from Christian community.

  473. To love one another,

  474. to mourn with each other,

  475. to rejoice with each other,

  476. to encourage one another.

  477. These can only be done

  478. when you're with one another.

  479. And so I would,

  480. as your associate pastor of discipleship,

  481. a shameless plug here,

  482. if you're not involved

  483. in some form of small group community at church,

  484. you miss out on so much.

  485. I believe as we look at this early church

  486. in the book of Acts,

  487. most of them met in homes

  488. or smaller communities.

  489. So I believe the closest

  490. that we can sometimes get to the community

  491. that we read about in the book of Acts

  492. is when we gather together

  493. in Sunday school classes

  494. and midweek life groups

  495. because that close-knit gospel community

  496. is the only context

  497. in which we get to know one another well

  498. and value people over possessions.

  499. And so if you're not involved,

  500. I really want to encourage you

  501. to seek that out and try that out

  502. because that is such an important part

  503. of being able to live out

  504. the example of the early church.

  505. The gospel was at work

  506. in the hearts of this early church

  507. and it prompted them

  508. towards a close-knit gospel community

  509. where the needs of brothers and sisters in Christ

  510. were recognized and met

  511. by other brothers and sisters in Christ.

  512. And because at the end of the day,

  513. they valued people over their own possessions,

  514. they met needs one another.

  515. As we continue in this passage

  516. into the fun part of chapter five,

  517. we start to see what happens in our hearts

  518. when we actually pursue influence over integrity.

  519. Luke intentionally writes this next bit

  520. in a way that contrasts

  521. the generosity of Barnabas

  522. with the greed of Ananias and Sapphira.

  523. Look again at verse 36

  524. and we'll read the first few verses of five.

  525. Thus Joseph, who was also called

  526. by the apostles Barnabas,

  527. so his nickname was son of encouragement.

  528. That's a really good nickname, all right?

  529. The apostles called him Barnabas,

  530. which means son of encouragement,

  531. a Levite, a native of Cyprus.

  532. Well, he sold a field that belonged to him

  533. and brought the money

  534. and laid it at the apostles' feet.

  535. There's the generosity of Barnabas.

  536. But if you're taking notes in the scripture journals

  537. or if you're just trying to figure out

  538. how this connects,

  539. the first word of chapter five

  540. is a very influential word,

  541. but it's a hinge word,

  542. a conjunction,

  543. a word that pivots the story here.

  544. But a man named Ananias

  545. with his wife Sapphira

  546. sold a piece of property.

  547. And with his wife's knowledge,

  548. he kept back for himself

  549. some of the proceeds

  550. and brought only a part of it

  551. and laid it at the apostles' feet.

  552. So we enter into chapter five

  553. and like I said,

  554. that word but's almost like a hinge

  555. on which the door of the church

  556. is opening up

  557. and we've seen the unity on the outside,

  558. but the door is hinging open

  559. and we get to see a glimpse

  560. of what's happening.

  561. And what exactly is going on

  562. in this church?

  563. Well, there's this couple.

  564. They conspired together

  565. that they may deceive others

  566. and receive praise.

  567. They sought influence and praise

  568. at the expense of their integrity.

  569. They likely saw Barnabas.

  570. You know, that guy that we grew up,

  571. we graduated high school with him,

  572. that guy named Joseph,

  573. they call him Barnabas now

  574. because he's just such an encouraging person.

  575. They changed his name.

  576. They look at Barnabas with some favor.

  577. Barnabas is a really cool guy.

  578. He's like the backbone

  579. of Christian community.

  580. We see the praise

  581. that Barnabas is getting.

  582. We see the praise

  583. that the unnamed people

  584. of the church are getting

  585. for selling their fields and homes

  586. and laying it down

  587. at the apostles' feet.

  588. They're getting all of this accolades.

  589. They're getting all this praise

  590. and we wish people saw us like that, right?

  591. So what do they do?

  592. They make a plan.

  593. They plan to sell their field,

  594. their property,

  595. and bring the proceeds of the church

  596. to the church,

  597. lay at the apostles' feet,

  598. as if they're giving it all,

  599. but it's not, is it?

  600. It's just a portion.

  601. They sought influence and praise,

  602. yet they went about attaining

  603. in a way that was sinful.

  604. And the reaction here

  605. seems pretty harsh, right?

  606. This is not an easy passage to read.

  607. The reaction seems pretty harsh.

  608. Peter tells Ananias,

  609. Satan has filled your heart.

  610. Like you are a,

  611. you're a worker of the enemy right now.

  612. Satan has consumed

  613. and filled your heart.

  614. And Ananias and his wife

  615. end up losing their lives.

  616. So if we sit around

  617. and think that God doesn't care

  618. about how we reflect him

  619. and the church

  620. to the world around us,

  621. we are vastly mistaken.

  622. Because God takes that very seriously.

  623. One commentator says it this way,

  624. the same spirit

  625. that gave the community

  626. its growth

  627. also maintained its purity.

  628. The same spirit

  629. that gave the community

  630. its growth

  631. also maintained its purity.

  632. Last week,

  633. Pastor Brett,

  634. he shared the story

  635. of the disciples

  636. in the boat with Jesus

  637. in Mark chapter four.

  638. We all know the story, right?

  639. The disciples and Jesus

  640. are in the boat.

  641. The storms come

  642. and the disciples

  643. are freaking out.

  644. And the story ends

  645. with this display,

  646. this picture

  647. that who is this one

  648. that even the wind

  649. and waves obey him.

  650. They needed a fear of someone.

  651. They needed someone

  652. that was bigger

  653. than the waves.

  654. They needed someone

  655. that was bigger

  656. than their fears.

  657. They needed someone

  658. that was bigger

  659. than their persecution

  660. because if they didn't fear God

  661. more than man,

  662. they would not live bold.

  663. They would not live for Christ.

  664. And so that story

  665. reminded us

  666. that a fear of the Lord

  667. must be higher

  668. than our fear of man

  669. because otherwise

  670. we won't live for God.

  671. That was last week.

  672. Well, this week

  673. we see exactly

  674. what it looks like

  675. for someone

  676. who has no fear

  677. of the Lord whatsoever.

  678. Ananias and Sophia

  679. represent a type

  680. of churchgoer

  681. that has no fear of God.

  682. The type of churchgoer

  683. that comes to the altar

  684. and says,

  685. Jesus Christ is Lord

  686. yet continues

  687. to live for themselves.

  688. The type of churchgoer

  689. that seeks to build

  690. their own empire

  691. instead of the kingdom of God.

  692. The ones that pray,

  693. my kingdom come,

  694. my will be done

  695. instead of thy kingdom come,

  696. thy will be done.

  697. And what we see

  698. in this passage

  699. is that when there is

  700. no fear of God,

  701. God will intervene.

  702. God does something

  703. terrifying

  704. in this passage

  705. and that same hypocrisy

  706. we see from Ananias

  707. and Sapphira

  708. is the same type

  709. of hypocrisy

  710. that affects the church

  711. today, right?

  712. This is not something

  713. we're immune from.

  714. This is not something

  715. that we are void of.

  716. This is a struggle

  717. that we ourselves

  718. must wrestle with

  719. and making sure

  720. that that hypocrisy

  721. doesn't infect our lives

  722. as well.

  723. And so looking

  724. at this passage,

  725. we see that hypocrisy.

  726. Oh, God may not strike us

  727. dead for lying

  728. about our giving,

  729. but there comes a point

  730. where God will prune

  731. the branch

  732. that bears bad fruit,

  733. where he will pluck

  734. the weeds,

  735. he'll remove the rocks,

  736. he'll remove any obstacle

  737. to his gospel mission

  738. and work flourishing.

  739. There is a need

  740. for each of us

  741. to value integrity

  742. over influence.

  743. There's a need

  744. for each of us

  745. to value integrity

  746. over influence,

  747. the type of integrity

  748. that makes it

  749. to where we don't

  750. bow down to Nebuchadnezzar

  751. even if it means

  752. a fiery furnace,

  753. the type of integrity

  754. that means

  755. that we keep on praying

  756. even if it means

  757. a lion's den,

  758. the type of integrity

  759. that keeps our eyes

  760. fixed on the cross

  761. even if it means

  762. sure persecution,

  763. the type of integrity

  764. that means

  765. we meet the needs

  766. of those around us

  767. without expecting

  768. praise for ourselves.

  769. The need

  770. for integrity

  771. remains.

  772. Imagine if I have

  773. a neighbor

  774. who is going

  775. through a really

  776. tough time.

  777. I just think about

  778. the people around me

  779. and if I were to imagine

  780. that a neighbor of mine

  781. was going through

  782. a really tough time,

  783. I just think of

  784. someone who might

  785. be working

  786. through a nasty divorce,

  787. someone who's

  788. on the verge

  789. of losing their jobs,

  790. spiraling into depression,

  791. just really struggling

  792. with life.

  793. They're struggling

  794. to make ends meet.

  795. So my wife and I,

  796. Kristen,

  797. we go to Quality Foods,

  798. we load up a whole cart

  799. full of groceries

  800. and toiletries,

  801. we know he's struggling

  802. so we want to meet

  803. the need of our brother,

  804. we want to meet

  805. the need of our brother

  806. in Christ,

  807. our neighbor.

  808. So we pack all the things

  809. from the car,

  810. get it in my truck,

  811. we drive over

  812. to his house,

  813. we walk up to his door,

  814. we knock on the door

  815. and he opens the door

  816. to me live streaming

  817. the whole thing.

  818. Hey guys,

  819. it's Evan,

  820. Pastor Evan from the church,

  821. I just really want

  822. to meet a need

  823. of a friend

  824. who's been struggling

  825. right now,

  826. I just want you

  827. to see how awesome I am,

  828. God's been really great

  829. to me,

  830. I want to meet the need

  831. of someone else

  832. because I'm awesome,

  833. God's blessed me

  834. and I just really want

  835. you to see my friend

  836. he's struggling,

  837. so if I were to all

  838. of a sudden

  839. take that moment,

  840. right,

  841. where I'm doing

  842. something good,

  843. inherently good,

  844. but I'm doing it

  845. so that I look better

  846. to other people,

  847. and if you don't

  848. live stream,

  849. just imagine if you

  850. did something really

  851. generous and you

  852. called into the

  853. Toccoa Record

  854. or WNEG just to get

  855. an article about yourself,

  856. right,

  857. well I just imagine,

  858. we all know there's

  859. something inherently

  860. wrong with that,

  861. something that is

  862. seemingly good,

  863. all of a sudden

  864. is pretty sketchy

  865. and selfish,

  866. so the same type

  867. of integrity

  868. is needed for us

  869. today,

  870. right,

  871. because oh,

  872. we may not,

  873. you know,

  874. live stream an act

  875. of generosity,

  876. but sometimes our

  877. heart is not quite

  878. as motivated

  879. by Christ-like

  880. compassion for my

  881. neighbor,

  882. sometimes my

  883. generous giving

  884. is motivated

  885. by the year-end

  886. tax credit I get

  887. for my generous

  888. contributions,

  889. sometimes the

  890. motivation for me

  891. to do something

  892. generous is not

  893. in Christ-like

  894. compassion for my

  895. neighbor,

  896. it's for the

  897. profile picture I

  898. get of us in our

  899. matching t-shirts

  900. serving the orphans

  901. in Africa,

  902. it's all of a sudden

  903. the thrust is on me

  904. getting influence

  905. rather than

  906. maintaining a life

  907. of integrity,

  908. and that's a

  909. problem,

  910. right,

  911. you see the same

  912. God that brought

  913. growth in this

  914. church was also

  915. going to seek to

  916. purify it,

  917. so we kind of

  918. come back to that

  919. initial question that

  920. I posed for each

  921. of us,

  922. when I started to

  923. ask,

  924. will the church

  925. last?

  926. Is this merely

  927. just a phase?

  928. Well,

  929. I think there's

  930. something to be

  931. seen in this

  932. passage about an

  933. answer to that,

  934. because even Peter

  935. here,

  936. he's demonstrating

  937. integrity,

  938. he confronted the

  939. lies when he could

  940. have slipped it

  941. under the rug,

  942. he gave Sapphira a

  943. chance to repent and

  944. do the right thing

  945. when he did not have

  946. to, and it's not

  947. uncommon to hear

  948. stories of weak

  949. church leaders in

  950. today's culture.

  951. It's not uncommon to

  952. hear stories about

  953. pastors who fall

  954. into moral failures,

  955. either of abuse or

  956. adultery.

  957. It's not uncommon for

  958. ministries and churches

  959. to be closing their

  960. doors due to scandals

  961. and absolute hypocrisy

  962. that comes out in the

  963. open.

  964. There's a problem in

  965. the local church today

  966. that if we look at

  967. these situations,

  968. there's some discomfort

  969. as people leave the

  970. church, people are

  971. hurt, and ministries

  972. and churches seem to

  973. fail, but much like the

  974. story of Ananias and

  975. Sapphira here, we must

  976. understand that God will

  977. vindicate the holiness

  978. of his great name.

  979. He prophesied as much

  980. in the Old Testament.

  981. Ezekiel chapter 36,

    Ezekiel 36:23

  982. verse 23, God says,

  983. and I will vindicate the

  984. holiness of my great

  985. name, which has been

  986. profaned among the

  987. nations, and which you've

  988. profaned among them.

  989. And the nations will

  990. know that I am the

  991. Lord, declares the Lord

  992. God, when through you I

  993. vindicate my holiness

  994. before their eyes.

  995. So is this movement of

  996. the church merely a

  997. phase?

  998. Will it last?

  999. Can it withstand the

  1000. opposition from the

  1001. outside and the

  1002. hypocrisy that

  1003. contaminates it from the

  1004. inside?

  1005. Will this continue or

  1006. will it fail?

  1007. Our world is more

  1008. broken than it's ever

  1009. been.

1010. The church seems to be

  1011. full of hypocrites.

  1012. If pastors fall into

  1013. moral failure, can the

1014. church still be a place

  1015. of hope and gospel

  1016. community?

1017. God will ensure that it

1018. is and that it always

  1019. will be.

1020. Want to know how I know?

  1021. Because God works in

  1022. passages like this.

  1023. The uncomfortable

  1024. passages, the ones that

1025. make us really not want

  1026. to preach this passage,

1027. the ones that calls us to

1028. kind of stir in some

  1029. uncomfort.

1030. God makes sure that we

1031. do not get to a place

1032. where we fail to represent

1033. him to the world around

  1034. us.

1035. And when that starts to be

  1036. the case, God will

  1037. vindicate the holiness of

  1038. his great name.

1039. We can be sure of that.

  1040. So maybe you're sitting

  1041. here today and you've

  1042. lost some trust.

1043. Maybe you look at the

1044. world around us, you read

1045. the articles, you see the

  1046. stories, and you grow

  1047. uncomfortable because the

1048. church is full of broken

  1049. people.

1050. The church is full of

  1051. hypocrites and sometimes

  1052. led by those.

  1053. Will the church prevail?

  1054. Will it continue?

  1055. Well, the answer's already

  1056. been written.

1057. This book doesn't just go

  1058. through Acts, it actually

1059. goes to the end of the

  1060. story.

  1061. There's a passage in

  1062. Revelation chapter 19 where

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

1063. we see the end of the

  1064. story.

1065. And if we have a question

1066. on whether or not it will

1067. prevail, we can just look to

1068. the end and see where it's

1069. already written and we can

  1070. be comforted in that.

  1071. Revelation chapter 19, I'll

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

1072. read this very short passage

1073. then we're almost about to

  1074. close.

  1075. Verse 6,

1076. Then I heard what seemed

1077. to be the voice of a

  1078. great multitude, like the

1079. roar of many waters and

1080. like the sound of mighty

  1081. peals of thunder, crying

  1082. out, Hallelujah, for the

1083. Lord our God, the Almighty

  1084. reigns.

1085. Let us rejoice and exult and

  1086. give him the glory.

1087. For the marriage of the

1088. Lamb has come and his

  1089. bride has made herself

  1090. ready.

1091. It was granted her to

  1092. clothe herself in fine

  1093. linen, bright and pure.

1094. For the fine linen is the

  1095. righteous deeds of the

  1096. saints.

1097. The angel said to me, write

1098. this, blessed are those who

1099. are invited to the marriage

  1100. supper of the Lamb.

1101. He said to me, these are the

  1102. true words of God.

1103. Then I fell down at his feet

  1104. to worship him.

1105. But he said to me, you must

  1106. not do that.

  1107. I'm a fellow servant with

  1108. you.

1109. And notice this, and your

1110. brothers who hold to the

  1111. testimony of Jesus, worship

  1112. God.

1113. For the testimony of Jesus is

  1114. the spirit of prophecy.

1115. And you see, we've been

1116. talking the last few weeks

1117. about how the church is a

  1118. movement.

1119. Yet a movement is only as

  1120. important as its

  1121. destination.

1122. For us, we can see that the

  1123. destination is in eternal

  1124. communion with our creator

  1125. God.

1126. And not opposition outside of

  1127. the church like persecution,

1128. not even hypocrites like us

1129. can cause that to fail.

  1130. So will this movement

  1131. continue?

  1132. Will it last?

1133. God will ensure that it

  1134. will.

1135. He will ensure that the

1136. church remains a place of

1137. hope, a place of gospel

  1138. community, because when it

1139. starts to stray, God is

  1140. faithful to prune the

  1141. branches.

1142. God is faithful to do what

  1143. is necessary.

1144. The end of the story has

  1145. been written.

1146. We've been charged as the

1147. church to bear witness to

  1148. the testimony of Jesus.

  1149. The church's mission was

1150. laid out in Acts 1-8 when

  1151. Jesus told his disciples,

1152. but you will be witnesses

1153. when the Holy Spirit comes

1154. upon you, and you will be

  1155. my witnesses in

  1156. Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria,

1157. and to the ends of the

  1158. earth.

  1159. We've been called and

  1160. commissioned to be

  1161. witnesses and bear

  1162. witness to the testimony

  1163. of Jesus.

1164. And we do that with our

  1165. words.

  1166. We faithfully proclaim

1167. the gospel to those who

  1168. are broken around us,

  1169. those who are entrenched

1170. in sin and have no hope

  1171. apart from the gospel.

1172. But we also do it through

1173. our works, where we live

  1174. lives that are honorable

  1175. and pleasing to God.

1176. We share the word through

  1177. proclamation of the gospel,

1178. yet we show the word

  1179. through our lives.

1180. So do we value people

  1181. over possessions?

  1182. Do we pursue gospel

  1183. integrity over influence?

1184. If not, there's some places

1185. for us to work on today,

  1186. right?

1187. There's some growth for us

  1188. in this passage.

1189. A fear of the Lord will

1190. embolden us to share the

  1191. gospel with our neighbors,

1192. but it will also safeguard us

1193. from the pitfalls of sin.

  1194. From this passage, we're

1195. reminded that if we want to

1196. live for Jesus, if we want

  1197. this movement to continue,

1198. we must value people over

  1199. possessions and pursue gospel

  1200. integrity over influence.

1201. And I pray that may be the

  1202. case for us today.

  1203. Let's pray.

  1204. Father, we love you.

1205. Lord, this is a terrifying

  1206. passage to work through.

1207. Lord, it's not been the most

1208. comfortable for me to read

  1209. and study this week.

1210. Lord, it's not been the most

1211. comfortable for me to share.

  1212. But Lord, you've done a work

1213. in my heart this week that I

1214. pray you may continue in the

1215. days ahead and in the lives

1216. of every person in this church.

1217. Lord, may you remind us that

1218. your plan is good, that you're

  1219. above all.

1220. Lord, when we get disgusted and

1221. discouraged by failures of the

1222. church and our brothers and

  1223. sisters and even ourselves

1224. sometimes, may you just remind

1225. us that you're in control.

1226. Will you help us to place our

  1227. confidence in you?

1228. Lord, if that means chastising

1229. us and challenging us to value

1230. people over possessions, by all

1231. the means, Lord, fix our hearts.

1232. But Lord, if we ever become a

1233. church that's more accustomed to

1234. being a church on a hill that

1235. isn't present in the community

1236. and we all, we want to influence,

  1237. Lord, correct us.

1238. And help us to be open to that

1239. correction so that we become

1240. fruitful again rather than be

1241. ones that come to the end of

  1242. your judgment.

1243. Lord, this is a serious passage

1244. and I pray you may do a serious

1245. work in each of our hearts.

1246. It's in your holy name we pray.

  1247. Amen.

1248. Today we're going to end with a

  1249. verse of invitation.

1250. If you want to stand and turn your

1251. hymnals to hymn 413, turn your

  1252. eyes upon Jesus.

1253. And I invite you to come if

1254. there's any reason you need to

1255. pray with me, join the church,

1256. give your life to Christ.

1257. I'd love to have that

  1258. conversation with you.

  1259. Otherwise, let's sing.

1260. And I'll talk to you throughiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseise
