  1. Amen. Thank you, Clay and Grant. I am thoroughly excited to get to preach this morning, but I'm going to be honest, I could probably listen to y'all play and sing just a little bit more.

  2. And I think that'd be a wonderful service together. If you have your Bible, turn me to Psalm 67, right there in the middle of Scripture. Now we're going to be looking at this missionary song, as Charles Spurgeon calls it. It's a Psalm 67.

  3. In my office, I have a very small book on missions, many books on missions, but one book particularly, in the introduction, Pastor David Platt reflects on the reality of lostness among the unreached.

  4. And this is what he writes. He writes, I was near Yemen not long ago. Northern Yemen has approximately 8 million people.

  5. Do you know how many believers there are in northern Yemen? 20 or 30.

  6. Out of 8 million people, the populations of Alabama and Mississippi combined, there are likely more believers in your Sunday school class or a couple of small groups at your church than there are in all of northern Yemen.

  7. That is a problem. It is a problem because millions of people in the northern part of Yemen have no access to the gospel.

  8. They join millions and millions of other unreached peoples in the world who are born, live, and die without ever even hearing the good news of what God has done for their salvation in Christ.

  9. He continues to write this. He writes, it's the primary responsibility of every pastor, of every local church, to love people in that church and to love people in that community.

  10. All toward the ultimate end of the name of Christ might be praised among every group of people on the planet.

  11. That's what the spirit of Christ wants.

  12. So that's what every Christian, every pastor, and every local church should want.

  13. And so I want to spend our short time together this morning with one goal in mind.

  14. And that is that each of us may commit our lives to this mission of God, proclaiming the gospel among the nations.

  15. Psalm 67, like I mentioned, Charles Spurgeon calls this a missionary song.

  16. But I hope that as we read this together today that we may be convicted and challenged and be thoroughly committed to prayerfully persisting and proclaiming God.

  17. That all the peoples may praise God.

  18. Psalm 67, beginning in verse 1.

  19. May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us, say, la, that your way may be made known on earth, your saving power among all nations.

  20. Let the peoples praise you, O God.

  21. Let all the peoples praise you.

  22. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon the earth, say, la.

  23. Let the peoples praise you, O God.

  24. Let all the peoples praise you.

  25. The earth has yielded its increase.

  26. God, our God, shall bless us.

  27. God shall bless us.

  28. Let all the ends of the earth fear him.

  29. Now this simple, short missionary psalm gives us a beautiful insight into the worship of God, right?

  30. It's just a very simple, cursory read of this psalm.

  31. Look at the commands here.

  32. Let the peoples praise you, O God.

  33. Let the peoples praise you, let the nations be glad and sing for joy.

  34. Let the peoples praise you, O God.

  35. Let all the peoples praise you.

  36. Let the ends of the earth fear him.

  37. With a simple reading of this text, we can already get the main idea, right?

  38. God's praise among the nations.

  39. God being praised among the nations.

  40. And this praise of the nations starts with you and I.

  41. So in this passage, we first see that we are created and commanded to worship God.

  42. This passage is operating on top of a biblical principle that is throughout the scriptures.

  43. And that biblical principle is that we are created for the purpose of praising and worshiping and glorifying God.

  44. We see this in the Old Testament in passages like Isaiah 43, where throughout the chapter it's clear,

  45. but in verse 7, he writes, everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.

  46. Later in Isaiah 43, verse 21, the people whom I formed for myself, that they might declare my praise.

    Isaiah 43:21

  47. Even more familiar, Psalm 139, verses 13 and 14.

    Psalms 139:13

  48. For you formed my inward parts, you knitted me together in my mother's womb.

  49. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

  50. Psalm 95, 6.

  51. O come, let us worship and bow down.

  52. Let us kneel before the Lord, our maker.

  53. Here's the idea.

  54. God made me so I should worship him.

  55. God created me.

  56. God crafted me.

  57. God knit me together.

  58. Therefore, I must worship him as my creator, as the almighty God.

  59. I was created.

  60. Therefore, I must worship my creator.

  61. It's a simple truth, but it's one that, if we're honest, we struggle with.

  62. We fail to do.

  63. We're created to worship God, to live our lives absolutely and completely for him.

  64. But even on our best day, we fall short due to our present sinful nature.

  65. So because we are tempted to worship elsewhere, we are further commanded in this passage.

  66. We are created, but we are also commanded to worship God.

  67. Praise the Lord.

  68. Sing with joy to the Lord.

  69. Worship God.

  70. These are frequent commands in scripture.

  71. And it's commanded because it's something we honestly just need reminding of sometimes.

  72. There are things that distract us, things that overwhelm us, that cause our praise to be absent to the ears of God.

  73. We choose to worship other things even sometimes.

  74. Think of the Israelites in Exodus chapter 32, right?

    Exodus 32 chapter mention

  75. They had been miraculously delivered from Egyptian captivity in the book of Exodus.

  76. They had been delivered through the amazing and wondrous plagues that God had sent on those that held his people in captivity.

  77. God had delivered them.

  78. He had parted the seas so that he walked through on dry land with an enemy at their back.

  79. He had led them with a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day.

  80. He had shown them his love, his provision, his grace, his mercy time and time and time again.

  81. Yet when Moses went up to Mount Sinai, the people of God turned their back on God and turned to Aaron, the high priest, and said,

  82. Make for us a golden calf that we may worship it instead.

  83. You see, our heart designed to worship God seems to work overtime, right?

  84. It seems to work overtime at finding other things to show worship and praise and the purpose of our lives instead of God.

  85. The theologian John Calvin refers to our heart as a perpetual factory of idols, meaning that our hearts are just conditioned and they're bent on finding things to worship,

  86. yet often it is not the worship of God, it is the worship of his creation.

  87. As Paul writes in Romans 1, we exchange the glories of the immortal creator God for the fleeting works of his creation.

  88. We choose to worship lesser things.

  89. That's the point C.S. Lewis makes in his book, The Weight of Glory.

  90. He writes,

  91. If we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised us in the Gospels,

  92. it would seem that our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak.

  93. We are half-hearted creatures fooling around with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us.

  94. We are far too easily pleased.

  95. So that's the story of Scripture, right?

  96. We are created in the image of God, yet because of our sinful nature, we choose to worship other things.

  97. We rebel and we run far from God.

  98. But God demonstrates his love for us.

  99. And that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

  100. The beauty of the Gospel is that God loved us anyway.

  101. He would look at mankind, sinful and wretched that we are,

  102. and love us so much so that he would give his only begotten Son to die an undeserved death on a sinner's cross,

  103. so that by his blood and sacrifice our sins might be forgiven,

  104. and that we would no longer be children of wrath, yet sons and daughters of the Most High God.

  105. We do not worship some deified dictator who demands our praise undeservingly.

  106. We worship the Creator God that breathed all things into existence,

  107. and made a way by his own blood,

  108. that we may have life and forgiveness of sins in his name.

  109. He alone is worthy of our praise,

  110. and our hearts were created, fashioned, cultivated for that singular purpose of worshiping him.

  111. Yet if we, who know of God through his works and through his word,

  112. need to be commanded and reminded to praise God,

  113. what of those that have little to no access to the Gospel,

  114. who do not know of God,

  115. know knowledge of God,

  116. they're created with the same purpose, to worship God,

  117. they're commanded to the same practice, to worship God,

  118. yet they are unable to experience the forgiveness of sins,

  119. and unable to worship God,

  120. because the Gospel has not reached them yet.

  121. This leads us to our second truth of this passage, though.

  122. We are created and commanded to worship God,

  123. but we are also burdened and blessed for the worship of God among the nations.

  124. Look again at the heart behind Psalm 67.

  125. There's an invocation being made, a request being made to God,

  126. and see if you pick up the language here.

  127. Verse 1, may God be gracious to you.

  128. I'm asking him to be gracious to us,

  129. and bless us, and make his face shot upon us,

  130. so that his way may be made known on the earth.

  131. Then again, another invocation,

  132. let the peoples praise you, O God.

  133. Let all the peoples praise you.

  134. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy.

  135. Let the peoples praise you, O God.

  136. Let all the peoples praise you.

  137. Let the ends of the earth fear him.

  138. There's a request being made on this psalmist,

  139. that all of the earth may know of God and worship him.

  140. There's a burden in the heart of this psalmist,

  141. for all of earth, all the peoples,

  142. to know of God, to know his salvation,

  143. to see his face,

  144. to know his saving power,

  145. and worship him,

  146. as they were created to worship him.

  147. There's a burden in his heart,

  148. and I say there should be a burden in our heart,

  149. for those who do not know the Lord.

  150. If you remember,

  151. as we were working through the book of Acts,

  152. there's this huge shift,

  153. as the gospel begins to be preached to the Gentiles.

  154. The apostle Peter saw a vision,

  155. and God began to extend salvation,

  156. the gospel proclamation,

  157. to the Gentiles,

  158. those who weren't Jewish,

  159. or part of God's elect in the Old Testament.

  160. And so we were looking at it as a huge shift,

  161. because it almost seems as though,

  162. when you read throughout the Bible,

  163. it almost seems as though,

  164. that God shows favor on the Israelites,

  165. and everyone else can just suffer his wrath.

  166. It almost seems as though,

  167. if you read the Old Testament,

  168. it seems as though God loves a particular group of people,

  169. and everyone else,

  170. he just casts out,

  171. discards,

  172. and allows to suffer his wrath.

  173. Yet there's another biblical principle,

  174. that I want us to allow to inform our understanding,

  175. of the mission of God in the Old Testament.

  176. It's throughout,

  177. but in 2 Peter 3,

  178. Peter,

  179. the apostle Peter writes this.

  180. He writes that God wills,

  181. God wills,

  182. it is the will of God,

  183. he desires that none should perish.

  184. God does not delight,

  185. in the death of those whom he created for himself.

  186. God wills that none should perish.

  187. So looking at this,

  188. God's scope of redeeming mankind,

  189. has always,

  190. from the very beginning,

  191. had the whole of earth in mind.

  192. God's redeeming purposes throughout scripture,

  193. always was intended for the whole of earth,

  194. all the peoples.

  195. He tells the first worshipers,

  196. Adam and Eve,

  197. what does he tell them after he created them?

  198. Be fruitful,

  199. fill the earth,

  200. subdue it.

  201. After exercising judgment on mankind's sin,

  202. through the flood,

  203. God commands Noah and his family in Genesis 9,

  204. be fruitful,

  205. multiply,

  206. increase greatly on the earth,

  207. and multiply in it.

  208. A few chapters later,

  209. Genesis 12,

  210. he tells Abram,

  211. I will make you a great nation,

  212. and all the families of the earth

  213. shall be blessed through you.

  214. We could read the rest of the Old Testament as evidence,

  215. but God's plan has always been

  216. that all of his creation,

  217. all of his peoples,

  218. be in line with,

  219. and worshiping their creator.

  220. It has always been the plan of God.

  221. Instead,

  222. we don't see God showing favor on Israel

  223. at the expense of everyone else.

  224. Instead,

  225. God shows favor on his people

  226. so that all the peoples of earth

  227. may look to God's people,

  228. may look to us,

  229. and know that he alone is God.

  230. That he alone can satisfy,

  231. he alone can provide,

  232. he alone can save.

  233. The psalmist,

  234. who would have been a Jew,

  235. knows this.

  236. And though Jesus had not yet come,

  237. though the Holy Spirit did not yet indwell,

  238. though the great commission

  239. had not yet been issued,

  240. this psalmist prays

  241. that all the people of earth,

  242. which would include the Gentiles,

  243. may praise God.

  244. He looks at the world around him

  245. and he sees brokenness.

  246. He sees the vain pursuits.

  247. He sees the sin.

  248. He sees the tragedy all around him.

  249. And his desire

  250. is that they may come to know God

  251. and worship him.

  252. He is burdened by the lost in our world.

  253. Charles Spurgeon,

  254. he states on this passage

  255. that the great theme of this psalm

  256. is the participation of the Gentiles

  257. in the worship of Jehovah.

  258. This is important.

  259. This is a big deal

  260. because he is burdened

  261. for the worship of God

  262. among the nations.

  263. And he knows that

  264. one of the primary ways

  265. in which the nations

  266. may come to know of God

  267. is through the blessings

  268. of God on his people.

  269. So we are burdened

  270. for the worship of God

  271. among the nations.

  272. We are also blessed

  273. for the worship of God

  274. among the nations.

  275. Look at verses one and two again.

  276. Verse one,

  277. may God be gracious to us

  278. and bless us

  279. and make his face

  280. to shine upon us.

  281. That,

  282. so that,

  283. the purpose being

  284. that your way

  285. may be made known

  286. on earth.

  287. Your saving power

  288. among all nations.

  289. The psalmist is praying

  290. for blessings

  291. and extended grace.

  292. He is praying

  293. that God's presence

  294. may be with his people

  295. so much so

  296. that the people around him

  297. may look to the people of God

  298. and see that he alone

  299. can save.

  300. There's a few books

  301. in the library

  302. that I was looking at this week

  303. that have old bulletins

  304. from this church.

  305. And I just happened

  306. upon Sunday,

  307. May 23rd,

  308. 1976,

  309. this congregation

  310. ended their service

  311. by singing

  312. the Aaronic benediction,

  313. the benediction of Aaron

  314. from Numbers 6.

  315. And I want to encourage you

  316. to think of Numbers 6

  317. as we read through this

  318. and see if anything

  319. sounds familiar to you today.

  320. Numbers 6,

    Numbers 6:24

  321. verse 24,

  322. see if this blessing

  323. sounds familiar.

  324. The Lord bless you

  325. and keep you.

  326. The Lord make his face

  327. to shine upon you

  328. and be gracious to you.

  329. The Lord lift up

  330. his countenance upon you

  331. and give you peace.

  332. This prayer for blessing

  333. in the Old Testament,

  334. even from back in Numbers,

  335. is being referenced here

  336. in Psalm 67

  337. for the purpose of seeing

  338. that God,

  339. we pray that you may bless us.

  340. But there's a purpose

  341. in this blessing.

  342. There's a reason

  343. for this blessing.

  344. And now I think

  345. we see that pretty clear

  346. as we look at this.

  347. There's a quote

  348. by James Montgomery Boyce

  349. who Pastor Brett

  350. quotes all the time.

  351. But he discusses

  352. our desire of blessing

  353. and he writes this.

  354. He writes,

  355. usually all we mean

  356. by asking God to bless us

  357. is that we want God

  358. to help us succeed

  359. at something

  360. or enable us

  361. to make money

  362. or give us the job,

  363. house, or care

  364. that we desire.

  365. But although such forms

  366. of material blessing

  367. are not excluded

  368. from this Aaronic benediction,

  369. this prayer in Numbers 6,

  370. they are only a part of it

  371. and a lesser part.

  372. more desirable

  373. is that God

  374. would himself

  375. enter into a gracious

  376. personal relationship

  377. with his people.

  378. You see,

  379. the greatest blessing

  380. that you and I

  381. can receive

  382. is a personal relationship

  383. with God

  384. through Jesus Christ.

  385. The greatest blessing

  386. that we can receive

  387. and partake in

  388. is a salvation

  389. and a relationship

  390. with Jesus Christ.

  391. So the prayer being

  392. referenced here

  393. is not for God

  394. to bless them materially.

  395. Instead,

  396. he's fervently praying

  397. that God may be close

  398. to his people,

  399. that we may know him,

  400. that he may shine

  401. his face on us

  402. and that we may set

  403. our face on him

  404. and be ever satisfied

  405. in his presence.

  406. He prays that we may

  407. feel his warmth,

  408. his grace,

  409. and that we may be at peace

  410. in his loving arms.

  411. He prays that we may

  412. experience God's blessing,

  413. that relationship,

  414. all the more,

  415. so much so

  416. that an unbelieving world

  417. may look on the lives

  418. of God's people

  419. and they may see peace

  420. in suffering,

  421. content in great loss,

  422. forgiveness in the face

  423. of utter betrayal.

  424. The prayer is that

  425. we may experience

  426. God's presence,

  427. God's life,

  428. so much so

  429. that people may look

  430. at our lives

  431. and the brokenness

  432. that we experience

  433. and know that the only

  434. explanation for our lives

  435. in the face of all

  436. the brokenness

  437. we've experienced

  438. is that there's a God

  439. who's real

  440. that makes all the difference.

  441. Lord, bless us.

  442. Be gracious to us

  443. so that the world

  444. may know

  445. that you are God.

  446. this Jewish psalmist

  447. is burdened

  448. by the lostness

  449. in the world,

  450. including the Gentiles

  451. and his prayer

  452. is that God

  453. may be worshipped

  454. among all the nations.

  455. Again, look at

  456. Genesis 6 through 9.

  457. There's, again,

  458. the story of the worldwide flood.

  459. I referenced a second ago

  460. that after the flood,

  461. God told Noah

  462. to be fruitful

  463. and fill the earth again.

  464. Essentially,

  465. bear my glory,

  466. reflect me

  467. amongst all the world.

  468. But what do we find

  469. God's people doing

  470. two chapters later

  471. in Genesis 11?

  472. Two chapters later,

  473. after being told

  474. to be fruitful

  475. and fill the earth,

  476. spread yourselves out,

  477. fill the earth

  478. with my glory,

  479. we read in Genesis 11,

    Genesis 11:4

  480. verse 4,

  481. they say this,

  482. come,

  483. let us build ourselves

  484. a city

  485. and a tower

  486. with its top

  487. in the heavens.

  488. Let us make a name

  489. for ourselves

  490. lest we be dispersed

  491. over the face

  492. of the earth.

  493. Essentially,

  494. they want to do

  495. the exact opposite

  496. that God had just

  497. commanded them to do.

  498. Rather than living

  499. lives of worship

  500. in obedience and faith

  501. to the commands of God,

  502. they seek to make

  503. a name for themselves

  504. at the expense

  505. of the rest of the world.

  506. So God confuses

  507. their languages,

  508. scatters them,

  509. yet in the book of Acts

  510. we see what?

  511. A great reversal.

  512. Though there's confusion

  513. from the Tower of Babylon

  514. in Genesis 11,

  515. there is clarity

  516. through the Holy Spirit.

  517. So in Acts,

  518. we see the reversal

  519. of this confusion

  520. and the Holy Spirit

  521. descends on God's people

  522. and the gospel

  523. begins to spread

  524. among all peoples

  525. once again.

  526. So we're going to learn

  527. from the example

  528. of the Israelites

  529. and apply it

  530. into this passage here,

  531. Psalm 67,

  532. for us personally here,

  533. we as the church,

  534. we as the church

  535. must have a great burden

  536. for the lost

  537. in this world.

  538. What a tragedy

  539. it would be

  540. if we ever

  541. grew content

  542. in building a name

  543. and a building

  544. for ourselves

  545. at the expense

  546. of the rest of the world

  547. dying and going to hell.

  548. Places where the gospel

  549. has not yet preached.

  550. Places like northern Yemen

  551. where there's 20 to 30 Christians

  552. in a region

  553. of 8 million people.

  554. We dare not neglect

  555. our own community,

  556. absolutely.

  557. But if we do not go

  558. to the nations,

  559. some of them

  560. will never hear of God

  561. and they will suffer

  562. eternity in hell.

  563. All peoples

  564. have been created

  565. and commanded

  566. to worship God

  567. yet how can they

  568. worship God

  569. if they have not

  570. experienced

  571. his saving power?

  572. That's the point

  573. Paul makes

  574. in Romans 10

    Romans 10:13

  575. verse 13.

  576. For everyone

  577. who calls

  578. on the name

  579. of the Lord

  580. will be saved.

  581. How then

  582. will they call

  583. on him

  584. in whom

  585. they have not believed?

  586. And how are they

  587. to believe in him

  588. of whom

  589. they have not heard?

  590. And how are they

  591. to hear

  592. without someone

  593. preaching?

  594. How are they

  595. to preach

  596. unless they are sent?

  597. As it is written

  598. how beautiful

  599. are the feet

  600. of those

  601. who preach

  602. the good news.

  603. Faith comes

  604. from hearing

  605. and hearing

  606. through the word

  607. of Christ.

  608. So how can they

  609. worship

  610. if no one

  611. has told them

  612. of God?

  613. That's the simple

  614. point that John Piper

  615. makes with a simple

  616. sentence.

  617. Missions

  618. exist

  619. because worship

  620. doesn't.

  621. There are places

  622. in our world

  623. where the worship

  624. of God

  625. is not

  626. non-existent.

  627. Therefore we must

  628. be burdened

  629. by the absence

  630. of worship

  631. among the nations

  632. and by God's

  633. blessing

  634. of a personal

  635. relationship

  636. with you

  637. with us

  638. and him

  639. through his son

  640. for each of us

  641. may our blessings

  642. lead to the worship

  643. among the nations.

  644. And you may be sitting

  645. here like

  646. alright Evan

  647. you've convinced me

  648. that sounds great

  649. obviously I agree

  650. with you

  651. but what do we do?

  652. Well from this passage

  653. I believe a simple

  654. application

  655. is that we must

  656. prayerfully persist

  657. in the proclamation

  658. of God

  659. so that all the

  660. peoples may

  661. praise God.

  662. We must prayerfully

  663. persist in the

  664. proclamation of God

  665. so that all the

  666. peoples may

  667. praise God.

  668. Charles Spurgeon

  669. says it this way

  670. if sinners will be

  671. damned

  672. at least let them

  673. leap to hell

  674. over our bodies

  675. and if they will

  676. perish

  677. let them perish

  678. with their arms

  679. about their knees

  680. imploring them to stay

  681. and if hell must be

  682. filled

  683. at least let it be

  684. filled with the

  685. teeth of our

  686. exertions

  687. let not one

  688. go there unwarned

  689. nor unprayed for.

  690. So if we're going to

  691. apply this passage

  692. we've got to start

  693. with prayer.

  694. We've got to start

  695. with prayer.

  696. I want to encourage

  697. us to let our

  698. prayer lives be

  699. saturated with the

  700. desire of God

  701. being worshipped

  702. among the nations.

  703. Let your prayer

  704. life be saturated

  705. by passages like

  706. Psalm 67

  707. where we pray

  708. invoke

  709. request

  710. God to be

  711. made known

  712. among the

  713. nations

  714. and for us

  715. to be a part

  716. of it.

  717. Let your prayer

  718. lives be

  719. saturated

  720. for God's

  721. worship being

  722. known among

  723. the nations.

  724. As you pray

  725. for our mission

  726. team this week

  727. and I encourage

  728. you to do so

  729. pray not only

  730. for their safety

  731. and their comfort

  732. pray for the

  733. heathen that

  734. knows not yet

  735. the Lord.

  736. Pray for these

  737. families to be

  738. blessed not only

  739. with a roof

  740. over their head

  741. but that they

  742. may see the

  743. blessings of God

  744. upon our team

  745. that is there

  746. and they may

  747. come to know

  748. the Lord

  749. and his salvation

  750. through them

  751. that he may

  752. see the sacrifices

  753. that they have

  754. made of finances

  755. vacation time

  756. comforts of home

  757. in order that

  758. families and other

  759. nations might know

  760. the Lord.

  761. Pray for our

  762. missionaries that

  763. have given their

  764. lives to this work

  765. of reaching the

  766. nations I think of

  767. the International

  768. Mission Board

  769. and many other

  770. organizations where

  771. people have gone

  772. to other places

  773. so that the name

  774. of God may be

  775. known.

  776. Pray for these

  777. missionaries.

  778. Pray that God

  779. may raise up

  780. missionaries for

  781. our midst

  782. from us

  783. that we may

  784. go elsewhere

  785. and labor for

  786. the sake of

  787. the gospel.

  788. This is something

  789. we know we ought

  790. to pray for

  791. but do we?

  792. I think so often

  793. we fail to pray

  794. for missionaries

  795. and fail to pray

  796. that God will

  797. raise up more

  798. missionaries out

  799. of fear.

  800. So often we think

  801. of missionaries

  802. living amongst

  803. the unreached

  804. we think of ones

  805. who have lost

  806. their lives

  807. for this mission.

  808. Ones that

  809. Pastor Brett

  810. mentions regularly

  811. such as Ann Judson

  812. from Burma

  813. or Jim Elliott

  814. from Ecuador

  815. or William Borden

  816. who died before

  817. he even reached

  818. his mission field.

  819. We think of these

  820. and we have fear

  821. that comes in our

  822. hearts and say

  823. I don't want to

  824. pray that because

  825. that may be what

  826. happens.

  827. But I want to

  828. encourage us to

  829. think the story

  830. of John and

  831. Betty Stamm.

  832. John Stamm

  833. gave his life

  834. to Christ

  835. at the age of 15

  836. under the preaching

  837. of a blind evangelist

  838. in New Jersey

  839. while Betty

  840. was raised in

  841. China to a family

  842. of missionaries.

  843. They met at

  844. Moody Bible Institute

  845. they fell in love

  846. and they both

  847. felt a strong

  848. calling towards

  849. the mission field

  850. particularly China.

  851. So Betty

  852. she went ahead

  853. and went to China

  854. and John came

  855. a year later

  856. and when they

  857. met back together

  858. when they both

  859. arrived in China

  860. and they were

  861. finally reunited

  862. they got married

  863. the very next day.

  864. John and Betty

  865. Stamm

  866. a married couple

  867. 25 years old

  868. ready to

  869. serve God

  870. in this field

  871. and so they

  872. lived there

  873. for about a year

  874. before they gave

  875. birth to their

  876. daughter Helen

  877. and during this

  878. time they labored

  879. and loved the

  880. people around them

  881. there was a civil

  882. war breaking out

  883. among them

  884. when their daughter

  885. was only three

  886. months old

  887. their family

  888. was seized

  889. by members

  890. of the Chinese

  891. Communist Party

  892. and John and

  893. Betty Stamm

  894. were martyred

  895. for their

  896. Christian faith.

  897. As an aside

  898. as someone

  899. with a baby

  900. here's another

  901. part of the story

  902. their three

  903. month old

  904. daughter

  905. was miraculously

  906. found hidden

  907. in a sleeping bag

  908. two days later

  909. by a traveling

  910. evangelist.

  911. So God

  912. preserved the

  913. life of the

  914. child but the

  915. parents gave

  916. their lives

  917. as a martyrs

  918. for the gospel

  919. and shortly

  920. before their

  921. death John

  922. had written

  923. to his father

  924. about the

  925. pressing dangers

  926. around them.

  927. They'd been

  928. encouraged to

  929. leave, they'd

  930. been encouraged

  931. to flee

  932. yet they remained

  933. and he wrote

  934. to his father

  935. about the

  936. pressing dangers

  937. and he included

  938. these verses

  939. from E.H.

  940. Hamilton

  941. another pastor

  942. from that area

  943. and this is what

  944. he wrote

  945. afraid of what?

  946. To feel the

  947. spirit's glad

  948. release

  949. to pass from

  950. pain to

  951. perfect peace

  952. the strife

  953. and strain

  954. of life

  955. to cease

  956. afraid of that?

  957. Afraid of what?

  958. Afraid to see

  959. the savior's face

  960. to hear his

  961. welcome and to

  962. trace the glory

  963. gleam from

  964. wounds of grace

  965. afraid of that?

  966. Afraid of what?

  967. A flash, a crash,

  968. a pierced heart

  969. brief darkness

  970. light, oh heaven's

  971. art

  972. a wound of his

  973. a counterpart

  974. afraid of that?

  975. Afraid of what?

  976. To enter into

  977. heaven's rest

  978. and yet to serve

  979. the master

  980. blessed

  981. from service

  982. good

  983. to service

  984. best

  985. afraid

  986. of that?

  987. Afraid of what?

  988. to do by death

  989. what life could

  990. not

  991. baptized with

  992. blood

  993. a stony plot

  994. till souls

  995. shall blossom

  996. from that

  997. spot

  998. afraid

  999. of that?

  1000. Friends, I want to

  1001. encourage us today

  1002. don't let fear

  1003. keep us from

  1004. praying

  1005. but even more so

  1006. don't let fears

  1007. keep you from

  1008. doing

  1009. as God has

  1010. very clearly

  1011. commanded each

  1012. of us to do

  1013. to proclaim

  1014. God

  1015. among

  1016. the nations

  1017. so pray

  1018. Psalm 67

  1019. and as we pray

  1020. let us

  1021. persistently

  1022. proclaim of God

  1023. Thomas Brooks

  1024. he was a Puritan

  1025. he wrote

  1026. that a soul

  1027. under assurance

  1028. is unwilling

  1029. to go to heaven

  1030. without company

  1031. there should be

  1032. something about

  1033. the desires

  1034. of where we are

  1035. going

  1036. and the knowledge

  1037. of what God

  1038. has done for us

  1039. where we want

  1040. all the more

  1041. for others

  1042. to join us

  1043. in that

  1044. so we must

  1045. be a part

  1046. of proclaiming

  1047. the gospel

  1048. be a part

  1049. of sharing

  1050. the gospel

  1051. to those

  1052. around you

  1053. and should

  1054. God call you

  1055. elsewhere

  1056. or give you

  1057. the opportunity

  1058. to go

  1059. be faithful

  1060. and go

  1061. finally

  1062. trust

  1063. that God

  1064. will receive

  1065. his praise

  1066. this passage

  1067. ends with confidence

  1068. that God

  1069. will bless

  1070. his people

  1071. and he will

  1072. bring a great

  1073. harvest

  1074. some point

  1075. to this being

  1076. just an answered

  1077. prayer of God

1078. but I like to think

  1079. of the finish line

  1080. again of

  1081. Moses

  1082. in the book

  1083. of Exodus

  1084. he requested

  1085. to see

  1086. God's face

  1087. in Exodus

  1088. 32

  1089. 33

  1090. and God

  1091. replies back

  1092. and says

  1093. no one

  1094. can see

  1095. my face

  1096. and live

  1097. reflecting

  1098. on that

  1099. reality

  1100. in response

  1101. to what

  1102. we see

  1103. in Psalm

  1104. 67

  1105. requesting

  1106. God

  1107. to make

  1108. his face

  1109. known among

  1110. us

  1111. James

  1112. Montgomery

  1113. Boyce

  1114. makes

  1115. this point

  1116. and I'll

  1117. close

  1118. here

  1119. he writes

  1120. this is

  1121. profoundly

  1122. true

  1123. of course

  1124. no sinner

  1125. however devout

  1126. or pious

  1127. as Moses

  1128. was

  1129. can possibly

  1130. look upon

  1131. the face

  1132. of God

  1133. and survive

  1134. that holy

  1135. piercing

  1136. sight

  1137. but one

  1138. day we

  1139. shall

  1140. we shall

  1141. look upon

  1142. God

  1143. in the day

  1144. when all

  1145. his redeemed

  1146. people

  1147. drawn from

  1148. every tribe

  1149. and tongue

  1150. and nation

  1151. and purged

  1152. of even

  1153. the slightest

  1154. taint of sin

  1155. stand before

  1156. his throne

  1157. to sing

  1158. praises

  1159. to the almighty

  1160. God

  1161. and to the

  1162. Lamb

  1163. in that

  1164. day

  1165. God's face

  1166. will shine

  1167. upon us

  1168. in fullest

  1169. measure

  1170. we will

  1171. see him

  1172. face

  1173. to face

  1174. and the

  1175. beatific vision

  1176. anticipated

  1177. by Psalm

  1178. 67

  1179. will be

  1180. ours

  1181. in that

  1182. day

  1183. our joy

  1184. will be

  1185. even

  1186. greater

  1187. because

  1188. great

  1189. multitudes

  1190. from all

  1191. the nations

  1192. of the earth

  1193. will be

  1194. praising

  1195. God

  1196. with us

  1197. so we

  1198. must

  1199. prayerfully

  1200. persist

  1201. in the

  1202. proclamation

  1203. of God

  1204. so that

  1205. all the

  1206. peoples

  1207. of earth

  1208. may praise

  1209. God

  1210. both now

  1211. and forever

  1212. more

  1213. this morning

  1214. will close

  1215. in a verse

  1216. of invitation

  1217. and as they

  1218. come or in a

  1219. moment I invite

  1220. you to begin

  1221. praying now

  1222. about how God

  1223. may be calling

  1224. you to bring

  1225. about the praise

  1226. of all peoples

  1227. consider how God

  1228. has blessed you

  1229. and how he might

  1230. be calling you

  1231. to use your

  1232. blessings to

  1233. reach the nations

  1234. you've probably

  1235. heard Pastor Brett

  1236. encourage you to

  1237. put your yes

  1238. on the table

  1239. at some point

  1240. and I want to

  1241. echo that challenge

  1242. by reading

  1243. in closing here

  1244. the finisher's

  1245. commitment

  1246. from the

  1247. campus crusades

  1248. and I pray

  1249. that these words

  1250. may be true

  1251. for each of you

  1252. so here's the

  1253. finisher's

  1254. commitment

  1255. and I pray

  1256. this may be

  1257. something you

  1258. may pray

  1259. as well

  1260. this is it

  1261. with the hope

  1262. that my

  1263. generation

  1264. might be the

  1265. one to see

  1266. Jesus'

  1267. great commission

  1268. finally fulfilled

  1269. I commit

  1270. to become

  1271. a finisher

  1272. of the

  1273. great commission

  1274. understanding

  1275. that to mean

  1276. I will go

  1277. if God

  1278. should lead

  1279. to take

  1280. the gospel

  1281. of Jesus

  1282. Christ

  1283. to one of

  1284. the world's

  1285. remaining

  1286. unreached

  1287. people groups

  1288. I will pray

  1289. persistently

  1290. for the nations

  1291. and God's

  1292. glory revealed

  1293. among them

  1294. I will disciple

  1295. others

  1296. with the focus

  1297. of mobilizing

  1298. them to become

  1299. finishers as well

  1300. I will live

  1301. a modest

  1302. simple

  1303. financial lifestyle

  1304. and give

  1305. sacrificially

  1306. so that the

  1307. nations of the

  1308. world might be

  1309. blessed through

  1310. Christ

  1311. I will with

  1312. God's help

  1313. to the best

  1314. of my ability

  1315. steward my

  1316. life in order

  1317. to maximize

  1318. effectiveness

  1319. in God's

  1320. purpose of

  1321. making his

  1322. name known

  1323. among all

  1324. the peoples

  1325. of the world

  1326. I am not

  1327. my own

  1328. I was purchased

  1329. with a great

  1330. price

  1331. my life

  1332. belongs to

  1333. God

  1334. and his

  1335. purposes

  1336. that's my

  1337. goal for

  1338. my life

  1339. and my

  1340. family

  1341. and I

  1342. pray

  1343. it may be

  1344. for you

  1345. as well

  1346. let's pray

  1347. father

  1348. thank you

  1349. for this

  1350. time you've

  1351. given us

  1352. lord I

  1353. pray that

  1354. as we

  1355. conclude

  1356. and think

  1357. through this

  1358. passage

  1359. and the

  1360. implications

  1361. it has

  1362. for each

  1363. of us

  1364. may we

  1365. be burdened

  1366. for the

  1367. lost

  1368. in our

  1369. world

  1370. may you

  1371. not allow

  1372. us to be

  1373. content

  1374. with

  1375. building a

  1376. name for

  1377. ourselves

  1378. instead may

  1379. we make

  1380. your name

  1381. known

  1382. to all

  1383. those who

  1384. do not

  1385. know you

  1386. may we

  1387. be finishers

  1388. of the

  1389. great commission

  1390. ones who

  1391. are actively

  1392. and persistently

  1393. proclaiming

  1394. you

  1395. to all

  1396. those you

  1397. allow us

  1398. to encounter

  1399. and God

  1400. I pray

  1401. specifically

  1402. that our

  1403. church

  1404. may send

  1405. out more

  1406. missionaries

  1407. in the days

  1408. ahead

  1409. particularly

  1410. to the places

  1411. the gospel

  1412. has not yet

  1413. reached

  1414. Lord

  1415. that's my

  1416. prayer

  1417. Lord

  1418. I hope

  1419. that's our

  1420. prayer

  1421. and Lord

  1422. I pray

  1423. that you

  1424. may do

  1425. a mighty

  1426. work

  1427. today

  1428. it's

  1429. in your

  1430. name

  1431. we pray

  1432. amen

  1433. as we

  1434. close

  1435. we're

  1436. going to

  1437. sing a

  1438. verse of

  1439. invitation

  1440. I invite

  1441. you to

  1442. stand with

  1443. me

  1444. and turn

  1445. to hymn

  1446. 75

  1447. in the

  1448. presence

  1449. of

  1450. Jehovah

  1451. and I

  1452. pray

  1453. that as

  1454. we sing

  1455. you may

  1456. if there's

  1457. any need

  1458. you may

  1459. have

  1460. to respond

  1461. today

  1462. that you

  1463. may come

  1464. forward

  1465. and see

  1466. me

  1467. otherwise

  1468. let us

  1469. sing

  1470. together

  1471. and worship

  1472. our

  1473. Lord

  1474. God

  1475. Thank you.
