  1. Church, it is certainly a pleasure to be back with you today.

  2. I can tell you I'm just so grateful for all that God is doing here at First Baptist Church.

  3. ! Catherine and I spent the past two weeks on sabbatical, and I can tell you we are so grateful

  4. for your generosity, for giving us some time away. It was a great time of rest and relaxation.

  5. While I was away, I want to say thank you so much, Sean. Thank you for leading our praise

  6. team over the past three weeks. Yes, thank you. Sean had everything taken care of, everything

  7. handled, and so that really has been a blessing to me over the past three weeks. I also want

  8. to say thank you to Larry Earhart, who did the same thing in our 11 o'clock service. Both

  9. of them are my heroes over the past couple weeks, so I thank you so much for that. I also want

  10. to say thank you to the staff who handled all of my jobs day to day. Because of taking two

  11. weeks of vacation, two weeks sabbatical, and working one week in Surge, I'm pretty sure

  12. Josh Lorenz thinks that I don't work here full-time. And that's going to really be cloudy,

  13. especially in November when our first child comes. So I promise I do work here full-time,

  14. but I can see why you think that way. Absolutely. So I asked Brett, again, like he said last year

  15. when we were going through summer in the Psalms, he said he was going to do it again the next

  16. year, and I said, you care if I take one of these Psalms and kind of elaborate on it? Believe it or

  17. not, he didn't say no. He was graciously accepted. And can I tell you, I had no clue what it took

  18. to prepare a sermon. I have had several months to look at this. Brett usually only has about a week,

  19. and I am just so thankful, Brett. Not only am I thankful for your friendship,

  20. I see what you do on a day-to-day basis for this church. Brett, thank you so much for taking the

  21. time to preach the word for us and to prepare our hearts and minds to go and serve out in the

  22. mission field. And you and Evan and our staff, I'm just so grateful for all of you, and thank you guys

  23. for what you do for our church. So as Brett said, let's dive into Psalm chapter 19. Now this was a

    Psalms 19 chapter mention

  24. Psalm of David that was written to the choir master, so it makes perfect sense that a choir master

  25. preaching on it this morning, right? So after digging into this Psalm, I discovered that this

  26. Psalm is an accurate representation of what our worship should be like. Not only should we worship

  27. here in our space here today on a weekly basis, on Sunday mornings at 8 30, and in our second service

  28. at 11 o'clock, but we should be doing this in our homes with our families and having that time of

  29. worship. This involves singing. This involves reading God's word. This involves praying together.

  30. The psalmist, when he was writing, he did all of these things, and the psalmist loved to give praise

  31. to God. He loved to reflect on his word and what he has done, and he always knew how to respond with a

  32. pure heart. And when we come together, it reminds us that God wants him to worship him that way on a

  33. daily basis. He wants us to worship him with our thoughts, with our actions, with our plans for the

  34. future, and how we are to be the church outside of these walls. So if you have your Bible, Psalm chapter 19.

    Psalms 19 chapter mention

  35. Here's what the word of God says in verse 1.

  36. The heavens declared the glory of God, and the sky proclaims his handiwork. Day to day it pours out

  37. speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words whose voice is not

  38. heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has

  39. set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and like a strong

  40. man runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of

  41. them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat. The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul.

  42. The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right,

  43. rejoicing the heart. The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord

  44. is clean, enduring forever. The rules of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired

  45. are they than gold, even much fine gold, sweeter also than honey, and drippings from the honeycomb.

  46. Moreover, by them is your servant warned. In keeping them, there is great reward. Who can discern his

  47. errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins.

  48. Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless and innocent of great transgression.

  49. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock

  50. and my redeemer. I love the meticulous language David uses here when describing all these things

  51. while he's encouraging the congregation to sing along to all of these words. Now, I admit some of our hymns

  52. and our songs are not as in-depth with the language in our own hymns and texts on a weekly basis.

  53. You know, it sure would have been nice to have David around during the late 90s and the early 2000s

  54. when one of our most popular worship songs was, Yes, Lord, Yes, Lord, Yes, Yes, Lord.

  55. It was so hard to trade your sorrows to the joy of the Lord after singing Yes, Lord for the thousandth time.

  56. Now, thankfully, modern worship has turned away from that one. We've either gone back to hymns

  57. or we have gone to a little bit more theologically correct music and thank God for that.

  58. But we go back to the psalm and to see how David pulled this together.

  59. The first thing I want us to look at this psalm is this.

  60. All things were created to worship.

  61. Our worship in this time should give glory and honor and praise to everyone's favorite Sunday school answer.

  62. Our worship should be directed to God.

  63. That's right, God.

  64. He is the one who established this world so that we who are created can worship Him who is the Creator.

  65. And let's go ahead and establish this up front.

  66. There is nothing that God has created that is greater than Him.

  67. There is nothing God has ever created that is greater than Him, the Creator.

  68. You know, there was one who challenged that idea and the Bible says he was struck down like lightning.

  69. That is why in our praise, we must constantly remind ourselves that we are not the ones who's great.

  70. The greatness is in our God and Him alone and He rules above all things.

  71. I'm going to give several musical examples today.

  72. And one of the obvious examples with this is the hymn that we have sung many times,

  73. How Great Thou Art.

  74. I love the second verse.

  75. And now most of you may know this song by heart, but I really want to focus in on what the second verse says.

  76. It says,

  77. When through the woods, in forest glades I wonder,

  78. And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.

  79. When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,

  80. And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.

  81. Doesn't that sound like a wonderful picture?

  82. Wouldn't you want to be there right now?

  83. No, you're here listening to me.

  84. It leads us to understand that the role of creation is to give honor and praise to the King of Kings.

  85. All that is in heaven and on earth is constantly pouring out praise, just as the psalmist said.

  86. Now, it is no wonder when I hear people go on an excursion or go hiking or go into the woods and see the greatness of creation,

  87. That they feel like they have such a spiritual experience.

  88. You know, the reason why they feel that way, and you'll feel that way if you go out in creation,

  89. Is because of them constantly pouring out praise.

  90. And you have the chance to hear it.

  91. Now, my father-in-law talked about this when he was walking up the Appalachian Trail.

  92. It took him a lot of work to go as far as he did.

  93. He said he was rained on.

  94. He said the trail was hard.

  95. At times that he was tired, but there were just a few times when he was walking through,

  96. That he would just crest a hilltop.

  97. And he would just see the glory of creation.

  98. And just realize that there's nothing in this world other than our Creator that could create something so marvelous.

  99. He understood that atmosphere of worship that creation was continuing to pour out.

  100. Did you know, luckily, right here in this room,

  101. We can create the same atmosphere of worship that creation enjoys on a daily basis.

  102. So you may ask, Clay, how do we create the atmosphere of worship?

  103. The way you create the atmosphere of worship is probably the same thing you've heard the last time you went to the dentist.

  104. Open your mouth.

  105. The act of coming together, praying, reading God's word, singing praise to God Almighty,

  106. Can turn the room that you are in into the holy of holies,

  107. Just as was in the wilderness with Israel.

  108. Now, how can we create something by just speaking it into existence?

  109. Well, we're imitating what our Creator has already done.

  110. The last time I read the book of Genesis,

  111. The Scriptures explain the way that God created the world.

  112. Whenever God was in a new day and He wanted to create something,

  113. The Scripture says the whole entire process He used.

  114. And God said,

  115. The very speech of God created the world that we see around us.

  116. Now, with our speech,

  117. We cannot create rocks and trees and skies and waters and hills, valleys.

  118. We cannot create any of that.

  119. But with our voice,

  120. We speak into existence the focus and the desire to put the cares of this world aside

  121. And pay attention to what the Father has in store.

  122. With one mind and in one accord,

  123. Just as we have heard in the book of Acts with the first church,

  124. The space is created so that God can dwell amongst us.

  125. That is why David said in Psalm chapter 22,

    Psalms 22 chapter mention

  126. God inhabits the praise of His people.

  127. And Jesus reinforced this in Matthew 18 verse 22 when He said,

    Matthew 18:22

  128. Where two or three are gathered in my name,

  129. There I am in the midst.

  130. Church, we must intentionally create this space for the Lord to dwell amongst us

  131. Every time we come together in worship.

  132. It doesn't have to be in this room.

  133. It just has to be with the focus and the created intent to welcome God to come amongst us.

  134. The second thing this psalm shows us is that our worship requires reflection.

  135. As we use praise to create the space for God,

  136. We should use reflection like a two-sided mirror.

  137. And I have a two-sided mirror here that Catherine let me borrow.

  138. When I reflect this way,

  139. What I am doing is not reflecting on myself,

  140. But I am reflecting all the things that are above me,

  141. And hopefully to the people that are around me.

  142. That is exactly what David was doing in verses 7-11 in Psalm chapter 19.

    Psalms 19 chapter mention

  143. It is clear to see that the psalmist was showing all the things that the Lord God had established in His righteousness.

  144. And when I see this verse of Scripture,

  145. I think of psalms like,

  146. To God be the glory,

  147. Great things He has done.

  148. So loved He the world that He gave us His Son.

  149. We also sing here in the early service,

  150. What He's done.

  151. What He's done.

  152. All glory and the honor to the Son.

  153. My sins are forgiven.

  154. My future is heaven.

  155. I praise God for what He's done.

  156. Do you know how hard it is to fit all that God has done

  157. Into a song that's three and a half minutes?

  158. Do you know how hard it is to even fit it into an hour time slot once a week on Sunday morning?

  159. And as I hold this up and I use different reflection,

  160. You can see different parts of the ceiling.

  161. And that's what our worship should be.

  162. It should continue to show the blessings that come from above.

  163. That as David said,

  164. It makes simple the wise.

  165. And it makes that which is dirty,

  166. That which is discarded,

  167. Perfectly clean,

  168. As it continues to pour out praise from heavenly places.

  169. It should be our desire to be that reflection.

  170. To not only share it amongst ourselves as Christians,

  171. As body of believers,

  172. But to share it with those who may even be in this room today

  173. That do not know who Jesus is.

  174. We are called to share this to a lost and dying world

  175. Because there are people who do not understand the glory there is to serve the Almighty God.

  176. We sing these songs,

  177. We read God's Word,

  178. And we pray so that we may reflect what He has done through us.

  179. Reflecting the glory of God in worship

  180. Is one of the most beautiful things we can do together.

  181. However,

  182. If all we do in our worship is simply reflect

  183. The majesty and glory of God that is around us,

  184. We have not worshipped in the manner Christ has asked us to do.

  185. You see, Christ said that we must worship in spirit and in truth.

  186. That's why I have two sides to this mirror.

  187. One side is meant to reflect the spirit

  188. And all that He is continuing to do in our lives.

  189. But the other side is so that I can reflect on myself.

  190. Our worship in truth should remind us of who we truly are.

  191. You know, I look in this mirror and I see many things.

  192. I see my teeth that my mother and father paid tremendous amounts of money

  193. So that they could be straight.

  194. I see a few more gray hairs than I had last year.

  195. I see a few less hairs than I had last year.

  196. I see that that is my future.

  197. But when I look into the eyes of the person in this mirror,

  198. I'm reminded that I'm not enough.

  199. I'm reminded that the person in that mirror has failed time and time again.

  200. Church, we must see our depravity in worship.

  201. This is relevant in the songs that we sing.

  202. It says, one song says,

  203. Alas, and did my Savior bleed,

  204. And did my Sovereign die?

  205. Would He devote that sacred head,

  206. The original text says,

  207. For such a worm as I.

  208. We sing a song in here all the time that says,

  209. I was a wretch.

  210. I remember who I was.

  211. I was lost.

  212. I was blind.

  213. I was running out of time.

  214. Just a few minutes ago, we sang,

  215. How great the chasm that lay between us.

  216. How high the mountain I could not climb.

  217. In desperation, I turned to heaven

  218. And spoke your name into the night.

  219. Church, on our own,

  220. We are not enough.

  221. Many have tried to live in a false sense of righteousness.

  222. But Paul preaches against that in Romans 3.23

  223. When he says,

  224. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  225. Jesus mentioned in the Sermon on the Mount

  226. That it's easy to see the sin and the speck in our brother's eye

  227. When we certainly have a plank in our own eye.

  228. The great Charles Spurgeon once said,

  229. Brother, if any man thinks of you ill,

  230. Do not be angry with him.

  231. For you are worse off than he thinks you to be.

  232. The truth is, if our sin is not forgiven,

  233. We are destined for a hell that is designed for eternal separation from God.

  234. The deeper we understand that the wages of our sin is death,

  235. The more we can appreciate that the gift of God is eternal life

  236. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

  237. He came for the imperfect.

  238. He came in our filth and in our shame.

  239. He came for the person that's on the inside of that mirror.

  240. And he paid a price of a life that was perfect

  241. So that I could have life

  242. So that you could have life more abundantly.

  243. And that's why we finish these songs.

  244. At the cross

  245. At the cross where I first saw the light

  246. And the burden of my heart rolled away

  247. It was there by faith

  248. I received my sight

  249. And now I am happy all the day.

  250. Thank you, Jesus

  251. For the blood applied.

  252. Thank you, Jesus

  253. It has washed me white.

  254. Thank you, Jesus

  255. You have saved my life.

  256. You've brought me from the darkness

  257. Into glorious light.

  258. Hallelujah.

  259. Praise the one who set me free.

  260. Hallelujah.

  261. Death has lost its grip on me.

  262. You have broken every chain.

  263. There is salvation in your name.

  264. Jesus Christ

  265. You are my living hope.

  266. You know, the reflection we see

  267. In our worship to the King

  268. Should show us our scars

  269. Of our sin

  270. And who we were.

  271. But when we accept Jesus Christ

  272. As our Lord and Savior

  273. That reflection

  274. Then shows us

  275. The righteousness of God

  276. Of which we are covered.

  277. We did not deserve this.

  278. There's a song that says

  279. We were the beggars

  280. But now we're royalty.

  281. We were the prisoners

  282. But now we are running free.

  283. We are forgiven

  284. Accepted

  285. Redeemed by His grace.

  286. So let the house

  287. Of the Lord

  288. Sing praise.

  289. The same reflection

  290. That shows us our sin

  291. Shows us

  292. That we are children

  293. Of the Most High King.

  294. Let us never forget

  295. Those two things.

  296. As we look to our third thing

  297. Is the final thing

  298. Of this psalm shows us

  299. Is our worship requires us

  300. To respond.

  301. After David had written

  302. About the heavens

  303. And the grandeur

  304. And the glory

  305. That continuously flows

  306. From heaven

  307. And all that God has done

  308. He takes the time

  309. And a moment to respond.

  310. He makes it practical

  311. For us not to enjoy

  312. A time of praise

  313. And reflection

  314. But to go forth

  315. And be the church.

  316. Why do we have to respond?

  317. Because our response

  318. Is what takes us

  319. Through those doors

  320. Into the mission field.

  321. There were several

  322. Different responses

  323. In worship

  324. And I'm just going to

  325. Name a few of them.

  326. In a time of worship

  327. And desperation

  328. And of sadness

  329. Isaiah was worshiping

  330. And he saw the Lord

  331. High and lifted up

  332. And the train of his robe

  333. Filled the temple.

  334. Isaiah's first response

  335. Was

  336. Woe is me

  337. For I am a man

  338. Of unclean lips

  339. And an angel

  340. Took a coal

  341. From the altar

  342. And touched his lips

  343. And said

  344. Now your iniquity

  345. Has been purged.

  346. Your sin

  347. Has been forgiven.

  348. Then God said

  349. With a loud voice

  350. Who will go before me?

  351. Who will go

  352. And be my voice?

  353. What was the response

  354. Of Isaiah?

  355. Do you remember?

  356. Here I am.

  357. Send me.

  358. From then on

  359. Isaiah went forth

  360. And prophesied

  361. To the nation of Israel.

  362. In a time of prayer

  363. And of anguish

  364. Of what was to come

  365. Our Savior was

  366. Dripping drops of blood

  367. In the garden of Gethsemane.

  368. The burden

  369. That was to come

  370. On him

  371. Was greater than

  372. Any man could ever bear.

  373. Obedient worship

  374. Is sometimes so real

  375. And so frustrating

  376. That it will move us

  377. To tears

  378. From our hurt.

  379. And as he wept

  380. In obedience

  381. He prayed

  382. Lord if it be your will

  383. Let this cup

  384. Pass from me

  385. Church I'm glad

  386. He didn't stop right there

  387. The next thing

  388. He said was

  389. But Lord

  390. Not my will

  391. But thine be done

  392. After that

  393. He got up

  394. And did what he needed to do

  395. He carried the cross

  396. For you

  397. And for me

  398. In a time of singing

  399. And worship

  400. Paul and Silas

  401. Were in prison

  402. Again

  403. They did not expect

  404. Anything to come

  405. Of where they were

  406. They were in a

  407. Dark prison cell

  408. You can imagine

  409. The filth

  410. You can imagine

  411. The nastiness

  412. Yet they were obedient

  413. In worship

  414. And singing

  415. The praises of God

  416. All of a sudden

  417. The doors

  418. Of the jail

  419. Swung open

  420. And it would seem

  421. That they would go free

  422. But they waited

  423. Why did they wait?

  424. Why didn't they run through?

  425. Because they knew

  426. That a jailer

  427. Was about to take his life

  428. And he did not know

  429. Jesus Christ

  430. As his Lord and Savior

  431. Because they stayed

  432. And in obedience

  433. They went to the jailer

  434. And said

  435. Hey

  436. Believe on the Lord

  437. Jesus Christ

  438. And you will be saved

  439. You and your household

  440. And in that moment

  441. The jailer

  442. Accepted Jesus Christ

  443. And his entire family

  444. Sometimes

  445. Our accurate response

  446. Is to stay back

  447. And is to realize

  448. Where we are

  449. And to share the gospel

  450. Of Jesus Christ

  451. Even when it doesn't seem

  452. Like we should

  453. Finally

  454. In a time of wonder

  455. The disciple

  456. Whom Jesus loved

  457. Was able to see

  458. The glorious eternity

  459. On the Isle of Patmos

  460. He saw

  461. The new Jerusalem

  462. Coming down

  463. From the throne of God

  464. He saw the new heaven

  465. He saw the new earth

  466. He saw Satan

  467. Cast into the lake of fire

  468. And in a loud

  469. Thunderous voice

  470. He heard the Lord say

  471. Surely

  472. I come

  473. Quickly

  474. John's response was

  475. Amen

  476. Come quickly

  477. Lord Jesus

  478. Our response

  479. Today

  480. Can look like

  481. Many of these forms

  482. But unless

  483. I've missed it

  484. We have not seen

  485. The heavens open today

  486. We have not

  487. Bled drops of blood

  488. In anticipation of death

  489. We are not

  490. Sitting in a prison cell

  491. And we are not

  492. On some secluded island

  493. Looking at the eternity

  494. That is to come

  495. So

  496. What is an appropriate response?

  497. Committing us

  498. To the call of Jesus

  499. To our lives

  500. In accordance

  501. To his word

  502. The response

  503. Is what the psalmist wrote

  504. He said

  505. Let the words

  506. Of my mouth

  507. And the meditation

  508. Of my heart

  509. Be pleasing to you

  510. Oh God

  511. My rock

  512. And my redeemer

  513. David gives us

  514. The key here

  515. To practically

  516. Go forth

  517. And to be

  518. The church

  519. And to live

  520. Our lives

  521. In full surrender

  522. To the calling

  523. Of Jesus Christ

  524. And if you're here today

  525. And you have simply

  526. Gone through the motions

  527. And not made Jesus Christ

  528. Lord of your Savior

  529. Has not made Jesus Christ

  530. The Lord of your life

  531. I pray

  532. That you would come

  533. And that you speak to me

  534. Speak to Evan

  535. Speak to Josh

  536. Speak to Brett

  537. Speak to anyone here

  538. Because today

  539. Is the day

  540. Of salvation

  541. For those of us

  542. Who are saved

  543. Let us respond

  544. Just as David did

  545. And consider where we failed

  546. And ask God

  547. To guide us

  548. So that we may be

  549. Good stewards

  550. Of the light

  551. That is shining

  552. Through us

  553. This is why we worship

  554. This is why we come together

  555. We're created to come together

  556. We are required

  557. To reflect

  558. And we are required

  559. To respond

  560. So let's do that at this time

  561. Would you join me

  562. In a word of prayer

  563. Our God

  564. We thank you

  565. For your word today

  566. And what it has taught us

  567. About worship

  568. I'm reminded daily

  569. In my reflection

  570. That in my own self

  571. I am insufficient

  572. And that I need you

  573. And Father

  574. I pray that if there are

  575. Those of us here today

  576. That do not know you

  577. As Lord and Savior

  578. That they would be bold enough

  579. To respond

  580. In obedience today

  581. Father for those of us

  582. Who have accepted you

  583. As Lord

  584. Of our lives

  585. May we be reminded

  586. That our words

  587. And the meditations

  588. Of our heart

  589. Carry more importance

  590. Than we could ever

  591. Imagine

  592. Father let us be

  593. The church outside

  594. Of these walls

  595. And not just here

  596. On Sunday morning

  597. Let our words

  598. Our thoughts

  599. And our actions

  600. Would make us children

  601. That you would be proud of

  602. For it's in Jesus

  603. Humbly name we pray

  604. Amen

  605. Would you please stand

  606. As we close our worship service

  607. We're going to sing

  608. Oh come to the altar

  609. If the spirit of God

  610. Is speaking to you

  611. And you need to respond

  612. I ask you to do that

  613. At this time
