  1. Good morning, First Family.

  2. If you're watching this video, that means that inclement weather has hindered us from gathering together at worship today.

  3. My name is Andy Childs. I serve as the Assistant Executive Director of your Georgia Baptist Mission Board.

  4. And my wife Melissa and I have the privilege of being members here at First Baptist with you.

  5. And I'm so grateful to Pastor Brett for the opportunity to bring God's Word today.

  6. And I want to pray for him and the others on the mission trip, and that they'll be able to return safely.

  7. And want to pray right now for us, because obviously if we're enjoying this video together, this time of worship,

  8. via social media and all technology things, that means we are in our homes and many of us are probably without power.

  9. So let me take a moment and just pray for us.

  10. Lord, I come to you and I thank you for your goodness and grace.

  11. And I thank you for our Pastor Brett and Lord for our staff here, the deacons, the leadership at First Baptist Toccoa.

  12. And Lord, today I pray especially as we are in our homes.

  13. Lord, many of us are probably without power.

  14. Lord, I pray that you would give us grace, that you give us patience.

  15. Lord, I pray specifically for the first responders, for the power linemen and women,

  16. those who are working hard to restore our power and all of the things we take so for granted.

  17. Lord, keep them safe.

  18. Lord, give them wisdom.

  19. Lord, I pray now in these few moments as we come to your Word,

  20. Lord, we would be reminded it is significant.

  21. It matters that we gather and worship.

  22. But Lord, the fact is we can worship you wherever we are.

  23. And that your Word can speak into our hearts, into our minds.

  24. And Lord, it can live out in our lives even in moments like this when we are interrupted,

  25. when there's disruptions, when things are not the way we had intended or hoped they would be.

  26. So Lord, in spite of all of these distractions, Lord, let us meet you in these moments.

  27. We pray in Jesus' name.

  28. Amen.

  29. Well, First Family, you know that Pastor Brett and our staff have been walking us through a series

  30. talking about core values and talking specifically about what we believe,

  31. these core commitments that define us as First Baptist Church.

  32. And if you recall, we've talked about the authority of Scripture,

  33. the power of prayer, and the importance of community.

  34. It's important that we all are reminded that prayer and Scripture and community

  35. are all an expression not only of what we believe and what we do corporately as a church,

  36. but they've got to be reflected in our own individual lives as well.

  37. Well, this morning, I want to take a few moments and talk about another one of those core commitments,

  38. and it's simply this.

  39. We believe in everyday evangelism.

  40. We believe in everyday evangelism.

  41. Now, I know for most of us as believers, if we were honest,

  42. the word believe doesn't frighten us.

  43. The word everyday doesn't frighten us.

  44. But when I said the word evangelism, some of us kind of went, oh, here we go.

  45. Because here's the thing.

  46. Too often we think evangelism is the call of someone else.

  47. Evangelism is the gift of someone else.

  48. Evangelism is the responsibility of someone else.

  49. But the fact is, those of us who know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior,

  50. we are all called to be ambassadors for Christ.

  51. We are all called to be salt and light.

  52. We're all called to be fishers of men.

  53. And so this morning, I want to take a few moments and talk about the fact

  54. that if we're going to be not only the church,

  55. but if we're going to be the followers of Christ that we ought to be,

  56. then we've got to embrace the call to everyday evangelism.

  57. Now, I know in my own life, just like you,

  58. oftentimes when there's an opportunity to talk about Jesus,

  59. I may think, well, there's probably a better place.

  60. Maybe there is even a better time.

  61. Sometimes I even think there may be even someone better than me

  62. that could answer someone's questions even better.

  63. So what happens is we tend to default away from evangelism.

  64. And I want to encourage you,

  65. the fact is the enemy steals this joy from us and we don't even know it.

  66. In other words, we hear evangelism and we become afraid.

  67. We hear evangelism and we become concerned.

  68. We hear the word evangelism and we step away

  69. when in fact, if we would have clarity and if we would be on mission

  70. and we would seize those moments,

  71. we would see the joy of the Lord

  72. and we would personally see the power of the gospel at work right in front of us

  73. even as we sow the seeds of the gospel.

  74. So as we take a few moments and think about this whole idea

  75. of we believe in everyday evangelism,

  76. the question is, what does that look like?

  77. I mean, it's one thing when we're on a mission trip.

  78. It's one thing when we're having vacation Bible school.

  79. It's another thing when we're at church on Sunday or Wednesday.

  80. There are those moments when evangelism,

  81. there are those moments when talking about the gospel,

  82. talking about Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection,

  83. talking about the fact that that message is not just religious,

  84. but it's relational and it's not just global, but it's personal.

  85. There are times when that just makes more sense.

  86. But what about the everyday part?

  87. What does it look like when we're not at church,

  88. when we're not on a mission trip,

  89. when we're not on a choir tour,

  90. when we're not at youth camp,

  91. when we're not at vacation Bible school?

  92. What does it look like in everyday life

  93. to be the follower of Jesus that reflects the gospel

  94. and tells the gospel, verbalizes the gospel,

  95. calls people to repentance,

  96. as Paul would say,

  97. we've been given the ministry of reconciliation,

  98. imploring people to be made right with God.

  99. Well, the good news is the Bible gives us a snapshot of this.

  100. As a matter of fact,

  101. the Apostle Paul in the book of Colossians chapter number four,

  102. we get to the end of that chapter

  103. and Paul's giving some instructions.

  104. And what's interesting is that Paul,

  105. as he's writing to the believers at Colossae,

  106. the Colossians,

  107. a place that he's not been,

  108. people that he doesn't know,

  109. and yet he's heard about how they've trusted Christ.

  110. He's heard about how the gospel has changed their life.

  111. He encourages them to stay in the gospel.

  112. And then toward the end of his letter,

  113. in chapter number four,

  114. Paul really gives a picture of what it looks like

  115. to live on mission every day in our lives.

  116. He gives a snapshot of everyday evangelism for every believer.

  117. So if you have your copy of scripture,

  118. I want you to turn with me to Colossians chapter four,

  119. whether it's on your phone or on your iPad,

  120. or you actually have a print Bible,

  121. let's go to Colossians chapter four

  122. and look at just two verses,

  123. verses four and five.

  124. And here's what the scripture says,

  125. Colossians chapter four,

  126. beginning in verse number five.

  127. Paul says,

  128. walk in wisdom toward outsiders,

  129. making the best use of the time.

  130. Let your speech always be gracious,

  131. seasoned with salt,

  132. so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

  133. Just two verses,

  134. Paul's concluding his letter here.

  135. He's encouraged them.

  136. He's talked about putting on the new self.

  137. He's talked about how we're alive in Christ.

  138. He gives some final instructions.

  139. But right here toward the end of his letter,

  140. he reminds them and he reminds us,

  141. what does it look like when you and I who've been saved,

  142. when you and I who've gone from death to life,

  143. from darkness to light,

  144. what does it look like when we live on mission every day,

  145. understanding that evangelism,

  146. the telling of the good news of Jesus Christ,

  147. the verbal clarity of the fact that without Christ,

  148. the Bible says,

  149. no one is righteous,

  150. no, not one.

  151. And the wages of sin is death,

  152. but the free gift of God is eternal life

  153. through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  154. What does it look like when we live that out every day?

  155. Obviously, we can't preach every day.

  156. We don't have revival services every day.

  157. We don't have small groups every day.

  158. We don't have 20 minutes or 15 minutes or 45 minutes.

  159. Sometimes it's just a moment.

  160. So what does that look like?

  161. Well, I want to use these two verses

  162. to walk through just a couple of simple principles

  163. that help us know how we live out this core commitment.

  164. We believe in everyday evangelism.

  165. First thing I want you to notice there in verse number five

  166. is he says,

  167. walk in wisdom.

  168. And then catch this.

  169. This is really interesting.

  170. Walk in wisdom toward outsiders.

  171. Now, isn't that interesting

  172. that Paul's writing to the church,

  173. he's writing to believers,

  174. and he doesn't say,

  175. hey, it doesn't matter what those people

  176. outside the church say.

  177. Who cares?

  178. They're not on the know.

  179. They don't know what we know.

  180. They've not experienced what we've experienced.

  181. So we don't really care what their opinion is.

  182. No, he says the opposite.

  183. He says,

  184. walk in wisdom toward outsiders.

  185. Now, who are the outsiders?

  186. It's not just those who live in a different town

  187. or a different city.

  188. It's not just those who maybe have

  189. a different food preference

  190. or different music preference.

  191. No, literally what he's talking about,

  192. the outsiders in this text,

  193. is talking about those who are outside the faith.

  194. Your family members who are not yet believers.

  195. Your neighbors, your coworkers,

  196. the people you go to school with,

  197. the people that you see every time you go in

  198. and get a cup of coffee,

  199. the people who are yet lost

  200. and have not come to Christ.

  201. Those are the outsiders.

  202. And Paul literally says to the Colossians

  203. and to us,

  204. walk in wisdom toward outsiders.

  205. So here's the first simple principle.

  206. Others matter.

  207. See, church, if we ever begin to think

  208. that somehow it doesn't really matter

  209. about anybody else.

  210. Hey, I've got Jesus.

  211. My family's got Jesus.

  212. Some of my close friends have got Jesus.

  213. I'm good.

  214. Forget everybody else.

  215. Then we are no longer like Jesus.

  216. We're not reflecting his mission.

  217. Because Jesus said,

  218. I came to seek and save those who are lost.

  219. So when we think about this idea

  220. of others matter,

  221. we're reminded that Paul here

  222. is writing from prison

  223. to people that he's never met.

  224. He's a Jew.

  225. They're Gentiles.

  226. And yet their heart for them,

  227. his heart for them is huge

  228. because they know Christ.

  229. And he says,

  230. and I celebrate that.

  231. But he also reminds them,

  232. be conscious of those

  233. in your circle of influence,

  234. those in your city,

  235. those in your neighborhood,

  236. those in your family,

  237. those in your life

  238. who are not yet followers of Jesus.

  239. Others matter.

  240. I think about what God taught Peter

  241. in Acts chapter number 10

  242. and verse number 28.

  243. It says,

  244. and he said to them,

  245. this is Peter speaking,

  246. you yourselves know

  247. how unlawful it is for a Jew

  248. to associate with

  249. or visit anyone of another nation.

  250. But God has shown me

  251. that I should not call any person

  252. common or unclean.

  253. So see,

  254. Peter kind of was at first

  255. distant from the Gentiles

  256. and he realized

  257. by God revealing to him

  258. that others matter.

  259. Even those who are not like us.

  260. Even those who don't believe yet like us.

  261. Even those who may mock the cross.

  262. Even those who deny Jesus

  263. that other people matter.

  264. Why?

  265. Because our ultimate mission

  266. as individual followers of Christ,

  267. the ultimate mission of the church

  268. is not just to gather for ourselves,

  269. but it's to gather so that we can go

  270. and share the gospel of Jesus Christ

  271. to outsiders.

  272. To those who have yet to trust Christ

  273. as Lord and Savior.

  274. Throughout Paul's writings,

  275. we see that believers are pushed

  276. to be aware of the perception

  277. of those outside the church.

  278. In other words,

  279. how do people in Toccoa,

  280. how do people in your family,

  281. how do people in your school,

  282. how do people in your workplace,

  283. how do they view you

  284. as a follower of Christ?

  285. How do they view us as a church?

  286. Do they see us as selfish?

  287. Do they see us as only concerned

  288. about ourselves?

  289. Do they see us judgmental

  290. rather than desiring

  291. to see them come to Christ?

  292. Here's some things Paul said.

  293. He said in 1 Thessalonians 4, verse 12,

    1 Thessalonians 4:12

  294. your daily life may win

  295. the respect of outsiders.

  296. Your daily life.

  297. Isn't that interesting?

  298. 1 Timothy 3, verse 7,

    1 Timothy 3:7

  299. he's describing church leaders.

  300. He said they should have

  301. a good reputation

  302. with outsiders.

  303. See, here's the thing.

  304. When we understand

  305. that others matter,

  306. we live our life in such a way

  307. that we push people forward

  308. rather than trying

  309. to fight with them.

  310. In other words,

  311. we push them toward the cross

  312. rather than pull them

  313. away from the cross.

  314. We desire to see them

  315. know Christ

  316. and His forgiveness

  317. and His grace

  318. rather than rejoicing

  319. or kind of getting

  320. a smirk on our face

  321. about, man,

  322. God's judging them.

  323. That's what they deserve.

  324. We choose to live

  325. in the grace of God.

  326. We value others.

  327. As a matter of fact,

  328. Paul says to the Philippians

  329. in chapter number 2,

  330. verse 3,

  331. he says,

  332. do nothing out of

  333. selfish ambition

  334. or vain conceit,

  335. but in humility

  336. consider others better,

  337. more important

  338. than yourselves.

  339. So he says here

  340. in Colossians 4

  341. as we're unpacking

  342. these words,

  343. he says,

  344. walk in wisdom

  345. toward outsiders.

  346. So in other words,

  347. others matter.

  348. And I'm so grateful

  349. that here at First Baptist

  350. we are demonstrating

  351. that corporately

  352. and individually

  353. with things like

  354. Hope for the Hungry,

  355. with the mission trips

  356. that we do,

  357. with the Vacation Bible

  358. school we do,

  359. with the way that

  360. we serve our community,

  361. whether it's first responders

  362. or school teachers,

  363. I'm so grateful

  364. that we're putting

  365. into action

  366. this principle

  367. that's easy to agree with,

  368. but sometimes

  369. it's hard to live.

  370. Others matter.

  371. But I want you to notice

  372. the second thing

  373. in verse 5,

  374. he goes on to say

  375. as we're walking

  376. in wisdom

  377. toward these outsiders,

  378. the last part of verse 5,

  379. he says,

  380. making the best use

  381. of time.

  382. Isn't that interesting?

  383. Making the best use

  384. of time.

  385. So in other words,

  386. Paul recognizes

  387. that all of us

  388. have limited time.

  389. We have limited moments

  390. with those who are outsiders,

  391. so when we have those moments

  392. with the outsiders,

  393. those who are not followers

  394. of Jesus,

  395. we ought to make the most of it.

  396. It shouldn't be

  397. that we just talk about

  398. the ball game

  399. or the weather,

  400. catch that,

  401. that we ought to talk

  402. about Christ.

  403. It's interesting

  404. because when Paul

  405. writes this,

  406. there's a very precise word

  407. that he uses

  408. when he says,

  409. making the best use

  410. of the time.

  411. There are two different

  412. Greek words

  413. that he could have used.

  414. He could have used

  415. the word chronos,

  416. which has to do

  417. with chronological time.

  418. That is,

  419. the seconds,

  420. the minutes,

  421. the hours.

  422. But that's not

  423. what he chooses to use.

  424. So it's not just

  425. that Paul's saying,

  426. make the most

  427. of those minutes,

  428. make the most

  429. of those hours,

  430. but literally

  431. he uses the word

  432. keros,

  433. which emphasizes

  434. defining moments.

  435. So literally

  436. what Paul says

  437. at the end of verse 5

  438. in Colossians 4,

  439. making the best use

  440. of the time

  441. could be literally

  442. translated,

  443. buy up

  444. the defining moments

  445. that are set before you.

  446. And I started thinking,

  447. how do I know

  448. when there's

  449. a defining moment?

  450. How do I know

  451. what that looks like?

  452. Well,

  453. the way I know

  454. is that every moment

  455. that we talk about Jesus,

  456. every moment

  457. that we help

  458. a person understand

  459. that the gospel

  460. is not just something

  461. to agree with

  462. theologically

  463. or intellectually,

  464. but it's got to be

  465. personal to us

  466. that every time

  467. we do that,

  468. we are potentially

  469. stepping into

  470. a defining moment

  471. for that person.

  472. You see,

  473. if all we do

  474. is talk about church

  475. and talk about values

  476. and talk about community

  477. and talk about prayer

  478. and even talk about Scripture,

  479. which are all core values

  480. and all matter,

  481. but we never explain

  482. to them

  483. how they can know

  484. the Jesus of the Scripture.

  485. They can know

  486. the one who answers

  487. the prayer.

  488. They can know

  489. the source

  490. of our community.

  491. In fact,

  492. we've missed the moment.

  493. Not just for us,

  494. but we've potentially,

  495. possibly caused them

  496. to miss

  497. a defining moment.

  498. So the second principle,

  499. we've talked about

  500. others matter,

  501. but the second part

  502. of verse 5

  503. is simply this,

  504. time flies.

  505. Those defining moments

  506. which are captured

  507. in seconds

  508. and minutes

  509. and hours

  510. and days

  511. and weeks

  512. and months

  513. and years,

  514. those defining moments

  515. are contained

  516. within those

  517. chronological moments,

  518. but it's so easy

  519. to miss it,

  520. isn't it?

  521. Time flies.

  522. See,

  523. I think about this,

  524. gospel priority

  525. really does

  526. cost us something

  527. that's precious,

  528. something we can never

  529. get back,

  530. because if you and I

  531. are going to be

  532. the witnesses

  533. we ought to be,

  534. sometimes we have

  535. to pause

  536. when we don't want

  537. to pause.

  538. We have to listen

  539. when we don't want

  540. to listen.

  541. Sometimes we have

  542. to step into

  543. the messy

  544. and step into

  545. the sin

  546. and step into

  547. the brokenness

  548. of someone

  549. that we would

  550. rather avoid.

  551. We all know

  552. we have limited time.

  553. Yes,

  554. the big picture,

  555. limited time

  556. in life,

  557. but even limited time

  558. in the moments

  559. of a day,

  560. right?

  561. Maybe we're on our way

  562. and we're running late

  563. and we go in

  564. to grab a cup of coffee

  565. and that same person

  566. who's always in line

  567. is right there

  568. and maybe we say,

  569. hey,

  570. have a good day

  571. and they say,

  572. I hope so.

  573. I hope I do.

  574. And just by their tone,

  575. we're like,

  576. oh,

  577. I probably should

  578. pause for a moment,

  579. but I'm already

  580. running late.

  581. I just wanted

  582. a cup of coffee.

  583. I didn't want

  584. to have a gospel

  585. conversation,

  586. but yet God's

  587. giving you a

  588. keros.

  589. He's giving you

  590. potentially a

  591. defining moment.

  592. The fact is

  593. when we look at

  594. what the scripture

  595. says,

  596. James reminds us

  597. in chapter 4,

  598. verse 14,

  599. he says,

  600. what is your life?

  601. It's like a mist

  602. that appears

  603. for a little time

  604. and then it vanishes.

  605. Time does fly.

  606. I was thinking

  607. about the last

  608. couple of weeks

  609. how God has given

  610. us his unlimited love,

  611. his unlimited mercy,

  612. his unlimited grace,

  613. but the one thing

  614. God does not give

  615. any of us

  616. is unlimited time.

  617. So how are we

  618. going to use

  619. our time?

  620. And again,

  621. not just a week,

  622. a year,

  623. or a couple of nights,

  624. or a few hours

  625. on Sunday,

  626. but how are we

  627. going to use

  628. every day

  629. the 24 hours

  630. in a day

  631. that God has given us?

  632. The seven days

  633. in a week

  634. that God has given us?

  635. The 365 days

  636. in a year

  637. that God has given us?

  638. How are we going

  639. to make the most

  640. of it?

  641. Not just for our good,

  642. but for his glory.

  643. You see,

  644. I think about the fact

  645. that evangelism

  646. and encouragement

  647. have a cost.

  648. That sometimes

  649. we have to give up

  650. something else

  651. so that we can give

  652. someone else

  653. what they most need,

  654. which is compassion,

  655. which is grace,

  656. which is concern,

  657. which is being seen

  658. and heard

  659. and valued

  660. not just by us,

  661. but by the God

  662. who created them

  663. and reminded

  664. that no one

  665. is an accident,

  666. that even the vilest

  667. offender,

  668. even the one

  669. whose life

  670. is just such a train wreck

  671. and so far from God,

  672. the fact is

  673. they are not a mistake

  674. even though

  675. they've made mistakes.

  676. Time flies.

  677. But we've got to look

  678. for those opportunities

  679. to share the gospel,

  680. to encourage others

  681. in their faith.

  682. Others matter

  683. if we're going

  684. to be an everyday witness.

  685. Time flies.

  686. We've got to understand

  687. that so we can make

  688. the most of moments

  689. every day

  690. as a witness.

  691. Every day evangelism

  692. knowing that God

  693. doesn't promise us tomorrow.

  694. And then notice back again

  695. Colossians chapter 4

    Colossians 4 chapter mention

  696. we're walking through

  697. these verses.

  698. Notice verse number 6

  699. the first part.

  700. He says,

  701. let your speech

  702. always be gracious.

  703. Hmm.

  704. I've got to be honest

  705. as a Christian,

  706. as a husband,

  707. as a dad,

  708. as a pastor,

  709. as a leader

  710. in the Georgia Baptist

  711. Mission Board.

  712. The fact is

  713. there are times

  714. when my speech

  715. is not as gracious

  716. as it ought to be.

  717. And sometimes

  718. the very moment

  719. I ought to be most gracious

  720. I'm least gracious.

  721. I mean you know

  722. what I'm talking about.

  723. When someone's,

  724. you're trying to be kind

  725. and you say,

  726. hey can I pray for you

  727. for a moment?

  728. And they say,

  729. no I'd rather you not.

  730. What?

  731. What do you mean

  732. you don't want me

  733. to pray for you?

  734. What's wrong?

  735. You don't believe man

  736. you're going to hell.

  737. You may not say it

  738. but you think it, right?

  739. And here's the thing,

  740. even if we don't say it

  741. quite as harshly,

  742. if we think it,

  743. I promise you

  744. the next thing that we say

  745. does not come across

  746. as gracious

  747. or helpful

  748. or compassionate

  749. or mercy filled.

  750. Again, Paul says,

  751. let your speech

  752. always be gracious.

  753. Now think about this.

  754. Finding fault

  755. is easy

  756. but extending grace

  757. to others

  758. in spite of their weakness

  759. is not.

  760. We can all find fault.

  761. I mean my goodness,

  762. we find it with one another

  763. as believers.

  764. We find it with our spouses.

  765. We find it with our parents.

  766. We find it with our children.

  767. We find it with our pastors.

  768. We find it with our small group leaders.

  769. We find it with ourselves, right?

  770. Listen,

  771. I can be my worst critic sometimes.

  772. But Paul knew

  773. that oftentimes

  774. the brunt

  775. of that negativity,

  776. the brunt

  777. of that lack

  778. of compassion

  779. is directed

  780. to those

  781. who don't know Christ.

  782. And can I tell you

  783. the enemy loves

  784. when we do that.

  785. The enemy loves

  786. when we make those

  787. who are not yet followers of Christ.

  788. We make non-believers.

  789. We make people

  790. who would say

  791. I am not a Christian.

  792. Maybe they say

  793. they're an atheist.

  794. Maybe they say

  795. they don't know

  796. what they believe.

  797. Maybe they have

  798. some other religion.

  799. The enemy loves it.

  800. Satan, the deceiver,

  801. loves it

  802. when we speak to them

  803. or we look at them

  804. with disgust

  805. and disdain.

  806. That's not what Jesus did.

  807. Whether it was

  808. the woman at the well

  809. or Matthew

  810. in the tax collector's booth,

  811. Jesus had compassion.

  812. We see over and over

  813. that he spoke to those

  814. no one else would speak to.

  815. He valued those

  816. no one else valued.

  817. He saw those

  818. that no one else saw.

  819. And friends,

  820. can you imagine

  821. what would happen here

  822. at First Baptist

  823. if we allowed

  824. that Christ-likeness

  825. to truly develop in us?

  826. That the least of these

  827. are seen and heard.

  828. That the movers

  829. and shakers

  830. and leaders

  831. who seem to have it

  832. all together,

  833. that they are seen

  834. and heard

  835. not for their accomplishments,

  836. not for their wealth

  837. or their power,

  838. not for their influence,

  839. but as a person

  840. who has needs.

  841. A person who is lonely.

  842. A person who sometimes

  843. is confused and desperate

  844. because it doesn't matter

  845. what's in your bank account.

  846. If your soul is empty,

  847. your life is empty.

  848. You see,

  849. I think about

  850. verse number six

  851. and I realize

  852. this principle is true.

  853. If we're going to live

  854. as everyday evangelists,

  855. if we're going to live out

  856. on mission everyday,

  857. there's got to be

  858. encouragement,

  859. not judgment.

  860. Verse six says,

  861. let your speech

  862. always be,

  863. and that word,

  864. gracious.

  865. The root word

  866. of gracious

  867. obviously is grace.

  868. That's that

  869. unmerited favor.

  870. And isn't it interesting

  871. that Paul says

  872. your speech

  873. should always

  874. be that way?

  875. Well, here's the fact.

  876. you and I

  877. can't always

  878. be gracious

  879. apart from

  880. the grace of God

  881. in our life

  882. working in us

  883. and through us.

  884. So when we talk about

  885. encouragement,

  886. not judgment,

  887. it's not just us.

  888. It's the power

  889. of the Spirit

  890. working in

  891. and through us.

  892. That we should always

  893. seek to give people

  894. encouragement

  895. even when they

  896. don't deserve it.

  897. That even when

  898. they deserve

  899. the judgment of God,

  900. just like I deserve

  901. and you deserve,

  902. that rather than saying,

  903. well, I'm going to tell them

  904. what they deserve.

  905. Let's tell them about

  906. the good news,

  907. the grace of God, right?

  908. Our pastor,

  909. Pastor Brett,

  910. often reminds us

  911. that there is

  912. bad news,

  913. that we all have sinned

  914. and we're separated

  915. from God.

  916. There's worse news.

  917. Worse news is

  918. there's nothing

  919. we can do about it.

  920. We can't be good enough.

  921. We can't be religious enough.

  922. We can't go to church enough.

  923. And then there's

  924. good news.

  925. The fact that Jesus Christ

  926. did for us

  927. what we could never do.

  928. That Jesus died

  929. on the cross

  930. for my sin,

  931. for your sin,

  932. for the sin of

  933. that neighbor,

  934. that co-worker,

  935. that person at the restaurant

  936. that you see,

  937. that person who's

  938. apart from Christ.

  939. And then there's

  940. the best news

  941. and that is that

  942. God's forgiveness

  943. and mercy is not just

  944. a generic general

  945. kind of thing,

  946. but it's personal

  947. and it can change

  948. our life.

  949. That whoever calls

  950. on the name

  951. of the Lord

  952. will be saved.

  953. See, there's got to be

  954. encouragement,

  955. not judgment.

  956. And then notice

  957. finally verse 6,

  958. the last part,

  959. we're talking about

  960. everyday evangelism,

  961. that we believe in that,

  962. that we believe

  963. that every one of us

  964. at First Baptist Church,

  965. Toccoa, Georgia,

  966. every one of us

  967. who've trusted Jesus Christ

  968. as Lord and Savior,

  969. we ought to be on mission,

  970. not just during mission trips

  971. and not just seasonally,

  972. but every single day.

  973. That we ought to live

  974. in the reality

  975. that others matter,

  976. that time flies,

  977. and in making the most

  978. of that time,

  979. we give encouragement,

  980. not judgment.

  981. Then finally,

  982. I want you to notice

  983. verse 6,

  984. he says,

  985. seasoned with salt.

  986. That is,

  987. our speech should be gracious,

  988. seasoned with salt,

  989. so that you may know

  990. how you ought to answer

  991. each person.

  992. Isn't that interesting?

  993. Seasoned with salt,

  994. so that you know

  995. how to answer

  996. each person.

  997. See, here's the thing.

  998. The more we talk,

  999. the more is known

  1000. about us,

  1001. even beyond

  1002. what we're talking about.

  1003. In other words,

  1004. it's one thing,

  1005. if we're talking about

  1006. Georgia football,

  1007. or we're talking about

  1008. Clemson or Auburn

1009. or whatever team we're for,

  1010. and we're having

  1011. that conversation,

1012. and some of you go,

1013. man, they really love Georgia.

  1014. They're really,

  1015. well, that's obvious

  1016. from our words,

  1017. but sometimes,

  1018. oftentimes,

1019. in the way that we talk

  1020. about those things,

  1021. there's more things

  1022. discovered about us.

  1023. For example,

1024. when we go to Arizona

  1025. to visit Melissa's family,

1026. it doesn't take people long

  1027. to realize we're not

  1028. from around there.

1029. When they begin to hear

  1030. our southern accents,

  1031. especially when Emily

  1032. was little,

  1033. and she would come,

  1034. and they thought

1035. it was the cutest thing

  1036. to hear Emily talk

  1037. and her southern drawl

  1038. and that sweet little

  1039. southern voice,

  1040. they're like,

1041. oh, get her to say

  1042. something else,

  1043. say something else.

  1044. Well, it didn't matter

1045. what she was talking about,

  1046. whether she was talking

  1047. about, you know,

  1048. Tekoa or she's talking

  1049. about the mountains

  1050. or the lake.

  1051. They knew that,

  1052. they were hearing

  1053. those words,

  1054. but beyond the words

  1055. was her accent.

  1056. Beyond the words

  1057. was who she was

1058. past what she was saying.

  1059. And Paul understood

  1060. that as he's talking

  1061. to the Colossians,

  1062. again, they're Gentiles,

  1063. he's a Jew,

  1064. he understood there

  1065. were some things

  1066. in the conversation

  1067. that would be clear,

  1068. but then there were

  1069. things that were known

  1070. more beyond just

  1071. what we say,

1072. that how we say it.

  1073. That's why he says

  1074. in verse 6,

  1075. the last part there,

  1076. seasoned with salt.

1077. And you think about salt.

  1078. Salt is purifying.

  1079. Salt is sustaining.

  1080. Salt is penetrating.

  1081. So in other words,

  1082. he says,

  1083. don't think that

  1084. what you're saying

  1085. doesn't matter.

  1086. We've all heard

  1087. talk is cheap.

  1088. Well, that's not true,

  1089. is it?

  1090. Talk's not cheap.

  1091. Some of us,

  1092. the greatest wounds

1093. of our heart and life

  1094. came from something

  1095. someone said about us

  1096. or to us

  1097. that was so piercing.

  1098. I've always said

  1099. whoever wrote

  1100. that little rhyme,

  1101. sticks and stones

  1102. may break my bones,

1103. but names will never hurt me,

  1104. they are crazy

  1105. and they are

  1106. a pathological liar,

  1107. right?

1108. You know what I'm saying?

  1109. Because it's true.

  1110. Man, you can say

  1111. 15 nice things

  1112. to someone

  1113. and they forget those,

  1114. but you say something

  1115. cutting or biting

  1116. about them

  1117. or their spouse

  1118. or their children

1119. and all of a sudden

  1120. it's like you can't

1121. get that out of your mind.

  1122. You can't unhear it.

  1123. Paul knew that.

  1124. So Paul knew

  1125. that if we're cutting

  1126. with our words

  1127. in one moment

1128. and then in another moment

  1129. we're trying to tell

  1130. that person

1131. about the grace of God

1132. and the love of God

1133. and the mercy of God

1134. and the forgiveness of God,

  1135. that person doesn't

  1136. hear the grace

  1137. because they've been

  1138. scarred by

  1139. the judgment.

  1140. So last principle

  1141. is simply this

  1142. as we think about

  1143. everyday evangelism,

1144. talk is not always cheap.

  1145. It just isn't.

1146. Talk is not always cheap.

  1147. Those flippant conversations,

  1148. those coarse jokes,

  1149. that negative gossip,

  1150. they are literally

  1151. a waste of words

1152. and not only is it

  1153. a waste of words,

1154. but that kind of talk

  1155. is dangerous

  1156. because that talk

  1157. can cause someone

  1158. to miss

  1159. the most important thing

  1160. that we say

  1161. about Jesus Christ.

  1162. Christ.

  1163. So talk

  1164. is not always cheap.

  1165. Ephesians 4 verse 29,

    Ephesians 4:29

  1166. Paul says this

  1167. to the Ephesians,

  1168. he says,

  1169. don't use foul

  1170. or abusive language.

  1171. Let everything you say

  1172. be good

  1173. and helpful

  1174. so that your words

  1175. will be

  1176. an encouragement

  1177. to those

  1178. who hear them.

  1179. That's something

  1180. I've been working on

  1181. for a long time.

1182. I want to speak truth,

1183. but I want to speak truth

  1184. with grace.

  1185. Where that really

  1186. drove home to me

  1187. was years ago.

  1188. I was teaching

1189. through the book of John

1190. and I got hung up

  1191. in chapter 1

  1192. because John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

1193. talks about how the Word,

  1194. with a capital W,

  1195. the Word became flesh

  1196. and dwelt among us.

1197. So the Word of God

  1198. that was with God

  1199. in the beginning

  1200. became flesh

  1201. and dwelt amongst us.

  1202. We beheld

  1203. the glory of God,

  1204. John says.

1205. And then he says this,

  1206. full of grace

  1207. and truth.

  1208. Isn't that interesting?

  1209. Because I don't know

  1210. about you,

  1211. but oftentimes

  1212. I kind of see

  1213. and I don't mean to,

  1214. but just practically

1215. I see grace and truth

  1216. as almost fighting

  1217. one another.

1218. Or I see grace and truth

1219. as grace is over here

  1220. at one end

1221. and truth is over here.

  1222. And you know,

  1223. there's been times

  1224. I've been guilty

  1225. saying,

  1226. hey,

  1227. I'm just going to

  1228. speak the truth.

  1229. Well,

1230. but am I speaking it

  1231. with grace?

  1232. Or other times

  1233. I'm over here

  1234. on this side

  1235. and I'm like,

  1236. man,

1237. I just want to be

  1238. kind and compassionate.

1239. I just want to be

  1240. full of grace.

  1241. But I'm not

  1242. dealing with truth.

  1243. Well,

1244. the rest of the book

  1245. of John shows us

  1246. what it looks like

1247. in the life of Jesus

  1248. to see how grace

  1249. and truth

  1250. are not competitors,

  1251. but they are co-laborers

1252. in the work of God

  1253. in our lives.

1254. That the grace of God

  1255. gives us

1256. what we do not deserve.

  1257. The truth of God

  1258. shows us

  1259. what we do deserve

  1260. and in understanding

1261. what we ought to have,

  1262. the wrath of God,

  1263. the judgment of God,

  1264. and instead

  1265. we have the grace

  1266. of God,

  1267. the grace becomes

  1268. even more powerful

  1269. but also we don't

1270. lose sight of who God is,

  1271. that He is holy

  1272. and He is righteous

  1273. and He is just.

  1274. See,

  1275. here's the thing.

  1276. Paul understood

  1277. that for many

  1278. of those outsiders

  1279. that he says

  1280. we're to be

  1281. wise toward,

1282. it would do us well

  1283. to realize

1284. that for many of them

  1285. we're the only Jesus

  1286. they'll ever see.

  1287. So when we claim

  1288. to have the Spirit

1289. of God living with us,

  1290. we claim to be

  1291. a follower of Jesus,

  1292. we claim to be

  1293. a Christian,

  1294. we claim to be

  1295. in the light,

  1296. we claim to know

  1297. the grace of God

1298. and yet none of that's

  1299. reflected in our life.

  1300. There's no light,

  1301. there's no hope,

  1302. there's no grace,

  1303. there's no mercy.

  1304. It's confusing

  1305. and conflicting

  1306. to those outsiders.

  1307. You see,

  1308. the goal is

  1309. simply this.

  1310. The goal is

  1311. that for those outsiders

  1312. who are outside

  1313. the faith of Christ,

  1314. who are outside

  1315. the body of Christ

  1316. called the church,

  1317. the goal is

  1318. for the outsider

  1319. to become an insider

  1320. through trusting Christ

  1321. as Lord and Savior.

  1322. See, again,

  1323. I think the enemy

  1324. has taken this idea

  1325. of evangelism

  1326. and we think

1327. we've got to be able

  1328. to articulate

  1329. all kinds of things

  1330. and answer all kinds

  1331. of questions.

1332. Well, what if they ask me

  1333. about dinosaurs?

1334. What if they ask me

  1335. about the different

  1336. theories about the flood?

  1337. What if this?

  1338. What if that?

  1339. Well, that may happen,

  1340. but here's what I've learned.

  1341. If we would just

  1342. graciously and kindly

  1343. guide the conversation

  1344. back to the gospel,

  1345. oftentimes the very person

1346. who may seem to be far

  1347. from trusting Christ,

1348. if we stay on the message

  1349. that we've been given

1350. to be reconciled to God,

  1351. there's no way

1352. to be made right with God

  1353. except through Christ,

1354. and we choose to do that

  1355. consistently day in

  1356. and day out,

  1357. that our life

  1358. and our lips,

  1359. that our words

  1360. and our deeds,

1361. that they line up together,

  1362. that we will see

  1363. the impact that Paul

  1364. desires the Colossians

  1365. to have,

  1366. and he desires us

  1367. to have.

1368. So as we think about

  1369. this core commitment,

  1370. we believe in

  1371. the authority of Scripture.

  1372. We believe in

  1373. the power of prayer.

  1374. We believe in the

  1375. importance of community,

  1376. but listen,

  1377. we also believe

  1378. in everyday evangelism

  1379. that really is

  1380. the responsibility

  1381. of every believer.

1382. So as we think about

1383. what does it look like

  1384. in your life

  1385. to live out

  1386. everyday evangelism?

  1387. Just two simple thoughts,

  1388. two questions.

1389. The first one is this,

  1390. who is an outsider

  1391. in your life?

  1392. Who is someone

  1393. who doesn't know

1394. Christ as Lord and Savior?

1395. It might be your spouse.

1396. It might be a sibling.

1397. It might be a cousin.

1398. It might be some other

  1399. family member.

1400. It might be a neighbor.

  1401. It might be a co-worker.

1402. It might be your best friend.

  1403. Who in your life

  1404. is an outsider

1405. with whom you can become

  1406. more intentional

  1407. about taking those

  1408. chronological moments,

  1409. those minutes,

  1410. those days,

  1411. those hours

  1412. that you're hanging out

  1413. and transforming those

  1414. into keros,

  1415. defining moments

  1416. because they matter.

  1417. You see,

  1418. it really comes back

  1419. to that, doesn't it?

  1420. Do we really care

  1421. about that person

  1422. enough to tell them

1423. the truth of the gospel?

1424. So who in your life

  1425. is an outsider

  1426. who doesn't know

1427. Christ as Lord and Savior?

1428. Someone that you can be

  1429. more intentional

  1430. about gospel conversations.

  1431. And listen,

  1432. understand,

  1433. our responsibility

  1434. is simply to sow

1435. the seed of the gospel.

1436. The Lord is the Lord

  1437. of the harvest.

  1438. He's the one

  1439. that changes lives,

  1440. but He uses

  1441. our little sprinkling

  1442. of seeds,

  1443. our little moments

  1444. that we buy up

  1445. those opportunities

  1446. to talk about

  1447. who Christ is

  1448. and what He's done

  1449. in our life.

  1450. That's the first question.

  1451. Who's an outsider

  1452. that you can become

  1453. more intentional about

  1454. with gospel conversations,

  1455. desiring to see them

  1456. to go from being

  1457. outside the faith

1458. to being inside the faith

  1459. of trusting Christ

  1460. as Lord and Savior?

  1461. The second question

  1462. is this,

  1463. what everyday moments

  1464. do you have?

  1465. In other words,

  1466. what's in the rhythm

  1467. of your life,

  1468. those everyday moments

  1469. that you can see

  1470. transformed

  1471. into missional opportunities?

  1472. I mean,

1473. when we go on a mission trip,

  1474. we work hard.

1475. Not only do we want

  1476. to make sure

  1477. we know what clothes

  1478. we need to bring

1479. and what the schedule is,

  1480. but most of us,

  1481. we spend time saying,

1482. Lord, help me be prepared.

1483. I know I've got to be flexible.

1484. Some things aren't going to go

  1485. the way I think

  1486. they're going to go.

1487. Lord, I want to be aware

  1488. of people around me.

  1489. Whether I'm doing

  1490. a construction project,

1491. there's still lost people there.

1492. Or whether I'm going out

  1493. and telling people

  1494. about Jesus on purpose.

1495. Lord, help me be intentional.

1496. Well, we ought to have

1497. that same kind of focus,

1498. that same kind of intentionality

  1499. in our everyday life.

  1500. Those everyday moments,

  1501. those patterns,

  1502. those routines,

1503. those people in those places,

  1504. that we go to

  1505. day after day,

  1506. week after week.

  1507. How can we be

  1508. more intentional?

  1509. How can you be

  1510. more intentional

  1511. to transform

  1512. those everyday moments

  1513. into missional

  1514. gospel opportunities?

  1515. Now, it could be

  1516. that as you listen

  1517. to this message,

  1518. you realize that

  1519. you're one of those

  1520. outsiders.

  1521. Maybe you've been

  1522. coming to church,

  1523. maybe you've been coming

  1524. with family members

  1525. or friends,

  1526. but the fact is

  1527. when you think about

  1528. Jesus Christ,

  1529. He's kind of

  1530. someone historically,

  1531. He's someone important,

  1532. He's someone

  1533. that you believe in,

  1534. just like you believe

  1535. Abraham Lincoln existed

  1536. or JFK existed,

1537. but you don't know Christ.

1538. Well, can I tell you

  1539. that the Bible says

1540. not only does He want you

  1541. to know about Him,

  1542. but He wants you

  1543. to know Him.

  1544. That whoever calls

1545. on the name of the Lord

  1546. will be saved.

  1547. You say,

1548. well, what does that mean?

1549. It means that you recognize

1550. that Jesus did for you,

1551. that He did for us

1552. what we could never do

  1553. for ourself.

1554. That He died on the cross

  1555. for our sin.

  1556. What is sin?

1557. It means missing the mark,

  1558. literally.

  1559. We miss the mark

1560. of God's standard of holiness.

1561. None of us are holy.

1562. Even the most righteous person

  1563. who ever lived

1564. needed the grace of God.

  1565. The Bible says

  1566. the result of that,

  1567. what we've earned,

  1568. the wages of sin,

1569. what we deserve for that

  1570. is death,

  1571. separation from God.

1572. But the free gift of God

  1573. is eternal life

  1574. through Jesus Christ,

  1575. our Lord.

  1576. So it might be

  1577. that right now

  1578. you just want to

  1579. in your heart say,

  1580. Lord Jesus,

  1581. I believe you died

  1582. on the cross.

  1583. I believe you died

  1584. there for me.

1585. I believe you were buried

  1586. and you rose again

  1587. and right now

  1588. I want to go

  1589. from the outside

  1590. looking in.

1591. I want you to be

  1592. Lord of my life.

  1593. I want my life

  1594. to be changed

  1595. by your life.

  1596. I want your resurrection

1597. power to live in me.

  1598. I want hope.

  1599. I want forgiveness.

  1600. I want purpose, Lord.

  1601. I trust you

  1602. as my Savior

  1603. and my Lord.

  1604. See, the Bible says

  1605. it's very simple

  1606. to trust Christ.

  1607. as your Savior

  1608. just by praying

  1609. a simple prayer

1610. in your heart like that.

  1611. But remember,

  1612. it's not the words.

  1613. It's not some incantation.

1614. It's not some abracadabra words.

  1615. It's a full stop.

  1616. It's a full surrender

1617. of all that you are to Him.

  1618. And listen,

  1619. if you've trusted Christ,

  1620. do us a favor.

  1621. Let us know that.

1622. We want to come alongside you

  1623. and help you know

1624. that that's not the end

1625. of what God has for you.

  1626. That's the beginning.

1627. It may be that you're listening

  1628. to this message

1629. and the Lord's just putting

  1630. on your heart

1631. that you need to write

  1632. some names down.

  1633. There are some people

1634. in your circle of influence.

  1635. There are some outsiders

  1636. that you're with

  1637. on a frequent basis

1638. that you need to begin

1639. to not only pray for by name,

1640. but look for those moments

  1641. because time flies.

  1642. Look for those moments

  1643. where you can give

  1644. encouragement,

  1645. not judgment.

  1646. Look for those opportunities

1647. to make your talk matter,

1648. to let your words have weight

1649. about the truth of Christ.

  1650. Maybe you just want

1651. to write their names down

1652. and maybe put it on a sticky note

1653. and put it by your mirror

1654. or maybe put a note

  1655. in your phone.

  1656. Maybe even send yourself

1657. an alert where every day

1658. or two those names come

  1659. and you're just reminded

  1660. to pray for them

  1661. and not just pray,

1662. but then look for those moments.

1663. Look for how God wants

1664. to transform the chronological moments,

  1665. the chronos moments

  1666. into keros defining moments.

1667. He wants you to step in

1668. and be part of that.

1669. It might be that you know

1670. Christ is Lord and Savior

  1671. and the fact is

  1672. you've been visiting

  1673. First Baptist for weeks

  1674. or months

1675. and you need to join this church

1676. and so the next time we gather

1677. you need to come to Pastor Bread

  1678. or even before them

1679. reach out to the church office

  1680. or send an email,

  1681. make a phone call

  1682. or even use Facebook

1683. to send a private message

  1684. and say,

  1685. hey, you know what?

1686. I want to talk more about

1687. what it means to be part

1688. of what God is doing

  1689. here at First Baptist

  1690. because we believe.

1691. We believe in the authority

  1692. of Scripture.

1693. We believe in the power

  1694. of prayer.

1695. We believe in the importance

  1696. of community

1697. and here at First Baptist

  1698. of Koeh,

1699. we believe in everyday evangelism.

  1700. Again,

1701. know that we're praying for you.

1702. I look forward to worship

  1703. with you again soon.

  1704. Pray for our pastor

1705. as he makes his way back home

  1706. from a mission trip

  1707. and Clay and Evan

  1708. and Josh and Savannah,

  1709. our staff

1710. as they continue to lead us well,

  1711. our deacons,

  1712. our small group leaders.

1713. What a blessing it is

1714. to be part of what God

  1715. is doing right here

  1716. at First Baptist Koeh.

1717. Let me pray for you

  1718. and you stay warm,

  1719. all right?

1720. Lord, we come to you.

  1721. We thank you

  1722. for these few moments

  1723. just to gather virtually.

  1724. How incredible it is

1725. that we can have your word taught

1726. and we can experience it

  1727. together in this moment.

  1728. And Lord,

  1729. it's not the power

  1730. of social media.

  1731. It's not the power

  1732. of technology.

  1733. It's the power

  1734. of your spirit

  1735. and your word

1736. that makes this moment significant.

  1737. And I pray,

  1738. Lord, beginning with me.

1739. Lord, you have reminded me

  1740. repeatedly

1741. in the last couple of weeks

1742. that I need to be more intentional

  1743. as an everyday evangelist.

1744. Lord, I need to look

  1745. for those opportunities

1746. to see that regular moment,

  1747. that just pattern,

1748. that grabbing a cup of coffee,

1749. that getting a tank of gas,

  1750. that eating lunch

  1751. at that same place,

  1752. and transform it

  1753. into a defining moment.

  1754. Lord, we thank you

  1755. for our pastor, Brett.

  1756. We thank you

1757. for his love for you.

1758. Thank you for how he is

  1759. diligent to lead us,

  1760. to model for us

  1761. what it looks like

1762. to be committed to you.

  1763. Lord, again,

  1764. I pray for safety.

1765. I pray for physical warmth

  1766. and spiritual warmth.

1767. Pray that we would be aware

  1768. of those around us,

  1769. even maybe right now,

  1770. who maybe need

  1771. a word of encouragement,

  1772. whether it's walking

1773. across the ice and snow,

  1774. carefully to say

  1775. to a neighbor,

  1776. hey, are you okay?

  1777. Or whether it's,

1778. if our phones are working,

1779. being able to send a text

  1780. just to say,

  1781. I love you,

  1782. I'm praying for you,

1783. let me know if I can help you.

  1784. Lord, thank you

  1785. that even in disruptions,

  1786. you have a purpose.

  1787. And ultimately,

  1788. the purpose

  1789. is to see those

  1790. who are lost,

  1791. found.

  1792. Those who are hopeless,

  1793. to know hope.

1794. Those who are in darkness,

  1795. to know light.

  1796. Those, Lord,

  1797. who are without you,

  1798. who are outside,

  1799. Lord,

  1800. to come inside

  1801. the faith family.

  1802. We thank you

1803. for your grace and love.

1804. Thank you for your word.

  1805. We pray this,

  1806. Jesus,

  1807. for your glory.

  1808. Amen.

  1809. Amen.
