  1. Over the last few weeks, we've been looking at the book of Hebrews.

  2. And if you remember from week one, when we were talking about Hebrews,

  3. we mentioned the fact that William Barclay said there was many difficulties that we can experience when looking at the book of Hebrews.

  4. There's many things that that are difficult for us to understand, possibly from our cultural standpoint of not having a Jewish background in different things.

  5. And there's so many things that it could be difficult to understand at times.

  6. And if I'm honest, this week was one of those weeks for me as I was studying and diving into this passage.

  7. I was just wrestling with the kind of the outline of of what I wanted to use for this this week.

  8. And so just wrestling through those things, it was challenging at times.

  9. However, after finally arriving at an outline that I was excited about and comfortable with,

  10. it was like God just just opened the open the gate.

  11. And it was just so easy to see what it is that that he was wanting to speak to me this week.

  12. And so I hope and I pray that that is something that comes across to you today.

  13. But also say that as an encouragement to you.

  14. I think all of us at times have had those moments where we read God's word and we struggle with understanding it,

  15. where one day it seems like the words just jump off the page at us.

  16. And other times it feels like we have to dig a little deeper.

  17. And so I just want to encourage you when those times happen to dig deeper.

  18. Many times I can say from personal experience,

  19. some of the most meaningful times alone with God and spending that time with him

  20. are digging in and diving into his word in a deeper way.

  21. And so I want to encourage you with that.

  22. Today we're going to be looking at the book of Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  23. We're going to spend our time focusing on verses 5 through 18.

  24. And so if you have a copy of God's word with you,

  25. I invite you to open with me to Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  26. And we're going to start reading in verse number 5.

  27. This is what the word of the Lord says.

  28. It says,

  29. For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come,

  30. of which we are speaking.

  31. It has been testified somewhere,

  32. What is man that you are mindful of him?

  33. Or the son of man that you care for him?

  34. You made him a little lower than the angels.

  35. You have crowned him with glory and honor,

  36. putting everything in subjection under his feet.

  37. Now in putting everything in subjection to him,

  38. he left nothing outside his control.

  39. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him,

  40. but we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels,

  41. namely Jesus,

  42. crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death,

  43. so that by the grace of God,

  44. he might taste death for everyone.

  45. For it was fitting that he,

  46. for whom and by whom all things exist,

  47. is bringing many sons to glory,

  48. should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.

  49. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source.

  50. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,

  51. saying,

  52. I will tell of your name to my brothers.

  53. In the midst of the congregation,

  54. I sing your praise.

  55. And again,

  56. I will put my trust in him.

  57. And again,

  58. behold,

  59. I and the children God has given me.

  60. Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood,

  61. he himself likewise partook of the same things,

  62. that through death,

  63. he might destroy the one who has the power of death,

  64. that is the devil,

  65. and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

  66. For surely it is not angels that he helps,

  67. but he helps the offspring of Abraham.

  68. Therefore,

  69. he had to be made like his brothers in every respect,

  70. so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God,

  71. to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

  72. For because he himself has suffered when tempted,

  73. he is able to help those who are being tempted.

  74. In this passage this morning,

  75. there's three takeaways that I want us to be able to see clearly.

  76. And it's my hope and prayer that by the end of this morning,

  77. we will see each of these clearly.

  78. Those three things that I want us to be able to see today are,

  79. first of all,

  80. I want us to be able to see God's plan from this passage.

  81. Also,

  82. I want us to clearly see how God accomplishes his plan,

  83. and finally,

  84. what this means for us today.

  85. And so to begin with,

  86. I want us to take a look at God's plan.

  87. What does this passage tell us about God's plan for us?

  88. And we see part of this in verses 5 through 8,

  89. where it says,

  90. For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come,

  91. of which we are speaking.

  92. It has been testified somewhere.

  93. What is man that you are mindful of him?

  94. Or the son of man that you care for him?

  95. You made him a little lower.

  96. You made him for a little while lower than the angels.

  97. You have crowned him with glory and honor,

  98. putting everything in subjection under his feet.

  99. Now in putting everything in subjection to him,

  100. he left nothing outside his control.

  101. At present,

  102. we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.

  103. We spent some time a couple of weeks ago

  104. talking about the significance of angels

  105. and the significance of the author declaring

  106. that Jesus is superior to the angels

  107. when we were looking at chapter 1.

  108. In fact,

  109. much of chapter 1,

  110. when you take a look at it,

  111. is spent,

  112. there's a lot of real estate that is given to the fact

  113. that Jesus is superior,

  114. he's greater,

  115. he's better than the angels.

  116. And this was significant for the audience

  117. that he was writing to.

  118. They were often seen as,

  119. and rightly so,

  120. as co-ministers under God's direction.

  121. In fact,

  122. Kent Hughes talking about the angels,

  123. he says,

  124. this is what Jacob's vision of the ladder was all about.

  125. Because as he looked at the ladder,

  126. he saw angels going up to heaven and coming down.

  127. The message was clear.

  128. There is an angelic commerce between heaven and earth

  129. on behalf of God's people.

  130. And now the author is going to shake things up

  131. a little bit for them.

  132. He's going to kind of rattle them a little bit,

  133. but when he says,

  134. it was not to angels

  135. that God subjected the world to come

  136. of which we are speaking.

  137. Angels are not going to rule the world to come.

  138. If God does not use angels to rule the world to come,

  139. then who will he use?

  140. The answer may come to a,

  141. as a surprise to many of us today.

  142. And I can promise you

  143. that the answer would have greatly surprised

  144. this first audience of believers

  145. that he was writing to.

  146. And the fact is,

  147. he's going to use us,

  148. his children to rule.

  149. God's ultimate intention

  150. is to have his kingdom ruled

  151. by redeemed men and women.

  152. Hughes again notes the significance

  153. of this realization

  154. when he says,

  155. those insignificant people

  156. in that Harried House church,

  157. a minuscule dot in the Roman Empire,

  158. were going to rule everything.

  159. No doubt that this would have floored

  160. the early church in hearing this news

  161. because surely they felt insignificant.

  162. Surely they felt like there wasn't much to them.

  163. They were just a small body of believers

  164. outnumbered by everybody else around them.

  165. And so I want to use this

  166. as an encouragement to us today.

  167. Those moments when you feel insignificant,

  168. those moments when you feel like your circumstances

  169. or the happenings in your life

  170. are weighing in and pressing down

  171. where you don't feel significant

  172. in the sense of who God is and who you are.

  173. Let me encourage you to do something.

  174. I want to encourage you

  175. maybe to possibly go outside at night.

  176. Take a look up at the stars.

  177. Encourage you to maybe drive somewhere

  178. where there's not as much light pollution.

  179. Just to take a look up at the stars

  180. where you can see as many stars

  181. as you possibly can with a naked eye.

  182. Or maybe go on a drive

  183. just to take a look at God's creation.

  184. Just take a look at all that He has created,

  185. all that He's spoken to existence.

  186. The mountains, the beach, lakes, valleys,

  187. ponds, trees, whatever the case may be.

  188. Take a look at all of those things.

  189. Stand in awe of God's creation

  190. and then remind yourself

  191. of the truth that we find in Scripture.

  192. That when Jesus left the glory of heaven,

  193. lived a humble yet perfect life

  194. and then willingly went to the cross,

  195. He didn't do that for those stars in the sky.

  196. He didn't do that for the mountains

  197. and the oceans and the valleys

  198. and the ponds and the trees

  199. and the animals, all of those things.

  200. He didn't do that for them.

  201. He did that for you and me,

  202. for those that are created in His image.

  203. You know, oftentimes when it comes to the question

  204. of what it means to be a human,

  205. we will either often overshoot

  206. or we're undershoot what that means.

  207. Some think of humans as little gods.

  208. Everything is measured by what we think, feel,

  209. and we think that the world revolves around us

  210. and our needs and our wants

  211. and we are the center of the universe.

  212. Others might say that there is nothing significant

  213. or unique about us at all.

  214. We are no different than anything else.

  215. And then others will try to have one foot in each place,

  216. in each location of these categories.

  217. On the one hand, they talk about

  218. how insignificant humanity is in the universe.

  219. And on the other hand,

  220. they act like everything revolves around them.

  221. Michael Kruger gives a sobering reminder

  222. when he says this about this passage.

  223. He says,

  224. it tells us that humans have glory and dignity and honor

  225. because we are made in the image of God.

  226. And at the same time, we are not God.

  227. We are not the measure of all things.

  228. We have messed up the world and we need to be redeemed.

  229. Again, in verse five, we're told it was not to angels

  230. that God subjected the world to come.

  231. In other words, humans stand out in creation.

  232. We are greater than the angels.

  233. And one day we are going to rule the world.

  234. But why is this the case?

  235. What is his grounds for making this statement?

  236. Well, he goes on to say, he says it like this.

  237. It has been testified somewhere.

  238. You know, it almost sounds like the author here

  239. is having a senior moment, you know,

  240. where he's like, you know,

  241. I believe that somebody somewhere possibly had said this.

  242. But that's not the case at all.

  243. Because he actually goes on to then perfectly recite

  244. and quote Psalm 8, which says,

  245. what is man that you are mindful of him

  246. or the son of man that you care for him?

  247. You made him for a little while lower than the angels.

  248. You have crowned him with glory and honor,

  249. putting everything in subjection under his feet.

  250. God has made us for a special purpose,

  251. to reflect his glory.

  252. This is part of what it means to be created in his image,

  253. to reflect his glory.

  254. God made human beings to be the guardians,

  255. protectors, and rulers of his world.

  256. He intended it that way for his glory and for our blessing.

  257. This is why the angels are not given dominion over the world.

  258. In fact, in 1 Corinthians 6,

  259. we are told that one day we're going to be the ones

  260. who are judging the angels.

  261. Do you know what that means?

  262. I'm not exactly sure either exactly what that means,

  263. but it does tell us

  264. that there's something distinctively different about us.

  265. There's something distinct about human beings.

  266. Kruger says,

  267. every person, poor or wealthy,

  268. notorious sinner or respected member of the community

  269. should be shown dignity and honor.

  270. And let that be the thought that comes to mind

  271. as we seek to serve,

  272. as we seek to minister to,

  273. as we seek to interact,

  274. and maybe even disagree with those that are around us.

  275. May we always remember

  276. that we are created in the image of God.

  277. But verse 8 also reminds us

  278. that things are not as they should be.

  279. They are not as they should be

  280. and that we need help.

  281. We need a rescue.

  282. We need a savior.

  283. It tells us very clearly that we need Jesus.

  284. And so the next thing

  285. that I want us to take a look at is this,

  286. and that is how God accomplishes this plan.

  287. We see his plan,

  288. but now we want us to see

  289. how God accomplishes this plan.

  290. Verses 9 through 11, it says this,

  291. But we see him who for a little while

  292. was made lower than the angels,

  293. namely Jesus,

  294. crowned with glory and honor

  295. because of the suffering of death,

  296. so that by the grace of God

  297. he might taste death for everyone.

  298. For it was fitting that he,

  299. for whom and by whom all things exist,

  300. in bringing many sons to glory,

  301. should make the founder of their salvation

  302. perfect through suffering.

  303. For he who sanctifies

  304. and those who are sanctified

  305. all have one source.

  306. Primarily, this section

  307. is showing us the necessity

  308. of Jesus really being human.

  309. This section is trying to show us

  310. very clearly

  311. and the necessity

  312. that Jesus Christ was a human.

  313. Now, this isn't something

  314. that we typically have to convince people of today.

  315. This isn't something

  316. that we have to make arguments

  317. with people today.

  318. In fact, most people,

  319. whether they're Christians or not,

  320. would believe that Jesus actually existed.

  321. That it's pretty hard to argue

  322. that when you look at the evidence,

  323. both in the biblical

  324. and extrabiblical evidence

  325. that is out there,

  326. that Jesus actually existed.

  327. No, very few people are arguing that.

  328. Very few people are arguing

  329. that Jesus actually existed

  330. and that he was a human.

  331. Today, most people were having

  332. to make the argument

  333. that he was truly divine,

  334. that he actually was God as well.

  335. But this wasn't the case,

  336. always the case in the first century.

  337. In fact, there was a group,

  338. there were a number of groups,

  339. but most prominently the Gnostics

  340. who struggled to believe

  341. that Jesus could both be human

  342. and God at the same time.

  343. For them, since Jesus was divine,

  344. they couldn't understand

  345. how he could also be a human,

  346. how the divine could humble himself

  347. in that kind of way to be a human.

  348. And let's be honest,

  349. this is a difficult concept

  350. for us to understand as well,

  351. this incarnation,

  352. this hypostatic union

  353. of both being fully God

  354. and fully man all at the same time.

  355. It's a difficult thing

  356. for us to understand.

  357. But it is necessary

  358. for us to believe.

  359. It's necessary for this to be true

  360. because this is exactly

  361. what makes it possible

  362. for God to accomplish his plan.

  363. You see, Jesus is uniquely qualified

  364. to pay for our sins

  365. because he is both God and man.

  366. This is why the incarnation

  367. is such a big deal.

  368. This is not a doctrine

  369. we can waver on.

  370. This isn't something

  371. that we can agree to disagree with.

  372. The qualifications needed to pay

  373. for the sins of the world

  374. would require him to be God.

  375. In order to bridge the infinite chasm

  376. between us and God,

  377. it would require an infinite sacrifice.

  378. We also see that this person

  379. would have to be human,

  380. like us and familiar with our weaknesses.

  381. If he was going to represent us

  382. then he had to be one of us.

  383. But finally we see that this person

  384. would have to be perfect.

  385. If that person had ever sinned,

  386. then all of a sudden

  387. they would need somebody

  388. to make a sacrifice on their behalf.

  389. And so what we see

  390. as far as the qualifications

  391. are to make atonement for the world

  392. is they have to be like man,

  393. like God,

  394. and perfect.

  395. There is only one person

  396. that has ever lived

  397. that meets these requirements

  398. and his name is Jesus.

  399. That is why there is no other name

  400. on which we can be saved

  401. other than calling on the name of Jesus.

  402. There is no one else

  403. with these qualifications.

  404. And I often feel like

  405. this is a doctrine

  406. that we take for granted

  407. or at least I find myself

  408. taking it for granted.

  409. Especially the part

  410. about how significant it was

  411. for Jesus to take on flesh.

  412. This week I was

  413. spent some time

  414. reading Martin Lloyd-Jones'

  415. reflection on this

  416. as he reflected on the incarnation.

  417. He at length

  418. detailed the significance of this.

  419. Noting at different points

  420. in Jesus' life

  421. what this humbling meant.

  422. He went through

  423. the whole life of Jesus

  424. showing at different moments

  425. what it meant

  426. for him to take on flesh

  427. and how in each

  428. of these situations

  429. it was him

  430. humbling himself.

  431. And he started

  432. by saying this.

  433. He says,

  434. we're trying to look

  435. at something

  436. that is quite inconceivable.

  437. Our minds are overwhelmed

  438. with the very thought of it.

  439. But this is the essence

  440. of the New Testament message.

  441. That helpless baby

  442. lying in the manger

  443. is none other than

  444. the eternal Son of God.

  445. He has deliberately

  446. come down

  447. to this level

  448. within these limits.

  449. He is making himself

  450. subject to suffering

  451. and mortality

  452. and death.

  453. And he did it

  454. all so that you

  455. and I

  456. could be redeemed.

  457. Lloyd-Jones goes on

  458. to look at

  459. how Jesus humbled himself

  460. all throughout his life.

  461. Looking at

  462. how he was born

  463. in a humble manger

  464. and how he came

  465. in a very humble way.

  466. But other than that

  467. he also lived this life

  468. all the way through

  469. up until his death

  470. where he put himself

  471. under his parents' teaching.

  472. Where he allowed himself

  473. to be questioned

  474. by the Pharisees.

  475. Where he was hurt

  476. by his friends

  477. who didn't believe.

  478. Who pushed him away.

  479. Even family members.

  480. And he humbled himself

  481. over and over again.

  482. The challenges he received

  483. from the Pharisees.

  484. He humbled himself

  485. to death on the cross.

  486. Separation from the Father.

  487. Noting example

  488. after example

  489. after example

  490. of what it meant

  491. for Jesus

  492. to take on flesh.

  493. Finally stating

  494. of all of this

  495. Lloyd-Jones said

  496. what is meant

  497. for him

  498. was this.

  499. He who was

  500. co-equal

  501. and co-eternal

  502. with God

  503. and in the bosom

  504. of the Father

  505. for all eternity.

  506. He who had never

  507. been separated

  508. from God

  509. he whose supreme

  510. delight

  511. had forever

  512. been to have

  513. fellowship with God

  514. came to a terrible

  515. moment

  516. when he could not

  517. see the face

  518. of God.

  519. He felt forsaken

  520. and cried out

  521. my God

  522. my God

  523. why hast thou

  524. forsaken me?

  525. That was the thing

  526. he was speaking

  527. about back in the

  528. garden of Gethsemane.

  529. Where he prayed

  530. in essence

  531. is this the only way?

  532. If this is possible

  533. let this cup

  534. pass from me

  535. he asked three times

  536. but that was

  537. but that was

  538. the only way

  539. whereby man

  540. could be forgiven

  541. and he submitted

  542. himself

  543. to it.

  544. Hopefully we can

  545. clearly see

  546. the necessity

  547. of Jesus

  548. to be both

  549. fully God

  550. and fully man.

  551. But verse 10

  552. also provides

  553. some helpful

  554. understanding

  555. about this

  556. necessity

  557. when it says

  558. this

  559. it says

  560. for it was

  561. fitting

  562. that he

  563. for whom

  564. and by whom

  565. all things

  566. exist

  567. is bringing

  568. many sons

  569. to glory

  570. should make

  571. the founder

  572. of their salvation

  573. perfect

  574. through suffering.

  575. When it says

  576. that Jesus

  577. was made

  578. perfect

  579. through suffering

  580. what does he

  581. mean?

  582. Well obviously

  583. he's not talking

  584. about the moral

  585. perfection

  586. of Jesus

  587. after all

  588. he was always

  589. perfect

  590. always will be

  591. perfect

  592. you can't

  593. improve on

  594. perfection

  595. but this

  596. refers to

  597. his effectiveness

  598. as our

  599. representative.

  600. Michael Kruger

  601. notes he says

  602. by suffering

  603. as a man

  604. he became

  605. a more

  606. sympathetic

  607. more appropriate

  608. more fitting

  609. high priest

  610. for us.

  611. Here is where

  612. we see

  613. how our

  614. salvation

  615. depends

  616. as much

  617. on Jesus

  618. humanity

  619. as it

  620. does

  621. on his

  622. divinity.

  623. If he

  624. was not

  625. really human

  626. then he

  627. could not

  628. really

  629. represent us

  630. and if he

  631. couldn't

  632. represent us

  633. then he

  634. couldn't

  635. save us.

  636. So as we

  637. consider how

  638. God

  639. accomplishes

  640. his plan

  641. there's a

  642. few aspects

  643. of our

  644. union

  645. with Christ

  646. that I

  647. want us

  648. to quickly

  649. bring our

  650. attention

  651. to.

  652. First of

  653. all we

  654. are united

  655. with Christ

  656. in death.

  657. It says

  658. that by

  659. the grace

  660. of God

  661. he might

  662. taste

  663. death

  664. for everyone.

  665. We're also

  666. told in

  667. scripture

  668. where it

  669. says for

  670. our sake

  671. he made

  672. him to

  673. be sin

  674. who knew

  675. no sin.

  676. Or in

  677. Galatians

  678. where it

  679. reinforces

  680. this by

  681. saying Christ

  682. redeemed

  683. us from

  684. the curse

  685. of the

  686. law

  687. by becoming

  688. a curse

  689. for us.

  690. Jesus

  691. tasted

  692. death

  693. became our

  694. sin

  695. became our

  696. curse

  697. for all

  698. those

  699. who

  700. trust

  701. in

  702. him.

  703. But we're

  704. also

  705. told

  706. that we

  707. have been

  708. crucified

  709. with

  710. Christ.

  711. You see

  712. the penalty

  713. we deserve

  714. is death

  715. and Jesus

  716. paid that

  717. for us.

  718. He took

  719. our death

  720. on himself

  721. and so we

  722. are united

  723. with him

  724. in that

  725. death

  726. but we're

  727. also united

  728. in him

  729. as we

  730. put to

  731. death

  732. our old

  733. self

  734. our old

  735. desires

  736. and be

  737. renewed

  738. in his

  739. likeness

  740. but we also

  741. see that

  742. we're united

  743. with Christ

  744. in glory.

  745. The passage

  746. tells us

  747. that Jesus

  748. was crowned

  749. with glory

  750. and honor

  751. and that he

  752. brings many

  753. sons to

  754. glory.

  755. We're also

  756. told that

  757. finally we

  758. see here

  759. especially in

  760. verse 11

  761. that we are

  762. united

  763. with Christ

  764. in holiness.

  765. It tells us

  766. that Jesus

  767. sanctifies

  768. and that we

  769. are

  770. sanctified

  771. because of

  772. Jesus

  773. when God

  774. looks at

  775. us

  776. he doesn't

  777. see

  778. our sin

  779. our shame

  780. those things

  781. that we

  782. regret

  783. the most

  784. in life

  785. but when

  786. he looks

  787. on us

  788. he sees

  789. his son's

  790. holy and

  791. perfect life

  792. that was

  793. given in

  794. our place.

  795. We are

  796. united

  797. with him

  798. in this

  799. so that

  800. God

  801. when he

  802. looks down

  803. on us

  804. he's not

  805. disappointed

  806. he's not

  807. ashamed

  808. of who

  809. we are

  810. but he

  811. looks on

  812. us

  813. and he

  814. sees

  815. his son's

  816. life

  817. given

  818. for us.

  819. This is

  820. wonderful

  821. news.

  822. We are

  823. united

  824. with Christ

  825. in death

  826. we are

  827. united

  828. with Christ

  829. in glory

  830. and we

  831. are united

  832. with him

  833. in holiness.

  834. In this

  835. passage we

  836. have seen

  837. God's plan

  838. we understand

  839. how he

  840. accomplishes

  841. his plan

  842. and now

  843. finally I

  844. want us

  845. to spend

  846. the remainder

  847. of our

  848. time

  849. and think

  850. about what

  851. this means

  852. for us.

  853. What does

  854. this mean

  855. for us?

  856. Verses

  857. 11 through

  858. 18 it

  859. says this

  860. that is

  861. why he

  862. is not

  863. ashamed

  864. to call

  865. them

  866. brothers

  867. saying

  868. I will

  869. tell of

  870. your name

  871. to my

  872. brothers

  873. in the

  874. midst

  875. of the

  876. congregation

  877. I will

  878. sing

  879. your

  880. praise

  881. and again

  882. I will

  883. put my

  884. trust

  885. in him

  886. and again

  887. behold

  888. I and

  889. the children

  890. God has

  891. given me

  892. since

  893. therefore

  894. the children

  895. share in

  896. flesh and

  897. blood

  898. he himself

  899. likewise

  900. partook

  901. of the

  902. same

  903. things

  904. that through

  905. death

  906. he might

  907. destroy

  908. the one

  909. who has

  910. the power

  911. of death

  912. that is

  913. the devil

  914. and deliver

  915. all those

  916. who through

  917. fear of death

  918. were subject

  919. to lifelong

  920. slavery

  921. for surely

  922. it is not

  923. the angels

  924. that he helps

  925. but he helps

  926. the offspring

  927. of Adam

  928. therefore

  929. he had to be

  930. made like

  931. his brothers

  932. in every

  933. respect

  934. there it is

  935. again

  936. the necessity

  937. of him

  938. to take on

  939. flesh

  940. so that he

  941. might become

  942. a merciful

  943. and faithful

  944. high priest

  945. in the service

  946. of God

  947. to make

  948. propitiations

  949. for the sins

  950. of the people

  951. for because

  952. he himself

  953. has suffered

  954. when tempted

  955. he is able

  956. to help

  957. those

  958. who are being

  959. tempted

  960. now when we

  961. look at this

  962. passage

  963. there are so

  964. many things

  965. that we could

  966. spend time

  967. looking at

  968. and reflecting

  969. on of

  970. what it is

  971. to

  972. how this

  973. benefits us

  974. what it means

  975. for us

  976. to trust

  977. in Jesus

  978. as our

  979. savior

  980. how it

  981. changes

  982. and I

  983. would encourage

  984. you

  985. to spend

  986. time

  987. reading

  988. through this

  989. over and

  990. over again

  991. this week

  992. being reminded

  993. of the

  994. difference

  995. that Jesus

  996. makes in our

  997. life

  998. but there's a few

  999. things that I want

  1000. to bring our

  1001. attention to this

  1002. morning

  1003. and to begin

  1004. with I want us

  1005. to see that we

  1006. are a part

  1007. of God's

  1008. family

  1009. he uses this

  1010. brothers over

  1011. over again

  1012. he's not ashamed

  1013. to call us

  1014. brothers

  1015. the author

  1016. is clearly

  1017. wanting us

  1018. to understand

  1019. that part

  1020. of being

  1021. a follower

  1022. of Christ

  1023. means that

  1024. we are

  1025. adopted

  1026. into

  1027. God's

  1028. family

  1029. this is

  1030. significant

  1031. this is a

  1032. reality that

  1033. should change

  1034. the way

  1035. that we

  1036. think about

  1037. everything

  1038. this is

  1039. significant

  1040. in our

  1041. daily walk

  1042. and I know

  1043. that I quote

  1044. this book a lot

  1045. but if you've

  1046. read it

  1047. you've probably

  1048. quoted a lot

  1049. too

  1050. but J.I.

  1051. Packer

  1052. in Knowing

  1053. God

  1054. he says

  1055. something

  1056. profound

  1057. about this

  1058. he says

  1059. you sum up

  1060. the whole

  1061. of the New

  1062. Testament

  1063. teaching

  1064. in a single

  1065. phrase

  1066. if you speak

  1067. of it

  1068. as a

  1069. revelation

  1070. of the

  1071. fatherhood

  1072. of the

  1073. holy

  1074. creator

  1075. he says

  1076. in the same

  1077. way

  1078. you sum up

  1079. the whole

  1080. of the

  1081. New Testament

  1082. religion

  1083. if you

  1084. describe it

  1085. as the

  1086. knowledge

  1087. of God

  1088. as one's

  1089. holy father

  1090. if you want

  1091. to judge

  1092. how well

  1093. a person

  1094. understands

  1095. Christianity

  1096. find out

  1097. how much

  1098. he makes

  1099. of the thought

  1100. of being

  1101. God's

  1102. child

  1103. and having

  1104. God

  1105. as his

  1106. father

  1107. if this

  1108. is not

  1109. the thought

  1110. that prompts

  1111. and controls

  1112. his worship

  1113. and prayers

  1114. and his

  1115. whole outlook

  1116. on life

  1117. it means

  1118. that he

  1119. does not

  1120. understand

  1121. Christianity

  1122. very well

  1123. at all

  1124. for everything

  1125. that Christ

  1126. taught

  1127. everything

  1128. that makes

  1129. the New

  1130. Testament

  1131. new

  1132. everything

  1133. that is

  1134. distinctively

  1135. Christian

  1136. as opposed

  1137. to merely

  1138. Jewish

  1139. is summed

  1140. up in the

  1141. knowledge

  1142. of the

  1143. fatherhood

  1144. of God

  1145. father

  1146. is the

  1147. Christian

  1148. name

  1149. for God

  1150. when

  1151. God

  1152. accomplished

  1153. his plan

  1154. on the

  1155. cross

  1156. what this

  1157. means

  1158. for you

  1159. and me

  1160. is that

  1161. we are

  1162. in the

  1163. family

  1164. we're a

  1165. part of

  1166. the family

  1167. if you

  1168. place

  1169. your faith

  1170. and your

  1171. trust

  1172. in Jesus

  1173. then you

  1174. have a

  1175. heavenly

  1176. father

  1177. and there

  1178. is nothing

  1179. that can

  1180. separate

  1181. you

  1182. from

  1183. your

  1184. father

  1185. next

  1186. we see

  1187. we are

  1188. saved

  1189. from

  1190. death

  1191. and the

  1192. devil

  1193. look at

  1194. me

  1195. at the

  1196. end of

  1197. verse 14

  1198. and 15

  1199. it says

  1200. this

  1201. that through

  1202. death

  1203. he might

  1204. destroy

  1205. the one

  1206. who has

  1207. the power

  1208. of death

  1209. that is

  1210. the devil

  1211. and deliver

  1212. all those

  1213. who through

  1214. fear of

  1215. death

  1216. were subject

  1217. to lifelong

  1218. slavery

  1219. Christ not

  1220. only broke

  1221. the curse

  1222. of sin

  1223. that is

  1224. death

  1225. but he also

  1226. delivered us

  1227. from the

  1228. devil

  1229. who leverages

  1230. that fear

  1231. of death

  1232. to enslave

  1233. us

  1234. Jesus

  1235. death

  1236. sets us

  1237. free

  1238. not only

  1239. from

  1240. sin

  1241. but also

  1242. from the

  1243. fear of

  1244. death

  1245. and this

  1246. should change

  1247. how we

  1248. live our

  1249. lives

  1250. this should

  1251. give us

  1252. a boldness

  1253. and a courage

  1254. like nothing

  1255. else can

  1256. you can really

  1257. live for

  1258. Christ

  1259. if you know

  1260. that death

  1261. has no power

  1262. over you

  1263. if you know

  1264. that death

  1265. has no

  1266. thing

  1267. if you know

  1268. that death

  1269. has no power

  1270. then you

  1271. can begin

  1272. to live

  1273. for Christ

  1274. boldly

  1275. like never

  1276. before

  1277. but what we

  1278. also see

  1279. in this

  1280. passage

  1281. and I think

  1282. is one of

  1283. the most

  1284. beautiful

  1285. things

  1286. is that

  1287. we have

  1288. a savior

  1289. who understands

  1290. us

  1291. we have

  1292. a savior

  1293. who understands

  1294. us

  1295. and this

  1296. is one

  1297. of the

  1298. things

  1299. that

  1300. that honestly

  1301. comforted me

  1302. the most

  1303. this week

  1304. as I was

  1305. studying

  1306. and thinking

  1307. about this

  1308. passage

  1309. is remembering

  1310. that Jesus

  1311. understands

  1312. us

  1313. you see

  1314. the point

  1315. is not

  1316. just that

  1317. Jesus

  1318. was a real

  1319. human being

  1320. it is also

  1321. that he

  1322. experienced

  1323. the life

  1324. of a real

  1325. human

  1326. if the point

  1327. was just

  1328. that Jesus

  1329. was a human

  1330. and then

  1331. died

  1332. then this

  1333. could have

  1334. happened

  1335. much faster

  1336. than spending

  1337. 33 years

  1338. on this

  1339. life

  1340. if this

  1341. was

  1342. that was

  1343. the only

  1344. point

  1345. was for him

  1346. to be

  1347. born

  1348. and then

  1349. to die

  1350. then this

  1351. could have

  1352. happened

  1353. much faster

  1354. or it

  1355. could have

  1356. happened

  1357. in isolation

  1358. where he

  1359. was born

  1360. and then

  1361. he separated

  1362. himself

  1363. and spent

  1364. only time

  1365. with God

  1366. and separated

  1367. himself from

  1368. this world

  1369. not experiencing

  1370. hardships

  1371. not experiencing

  1372. disappointment

  1373. or anything

  1374. like that

  1375. and then

  1376. to go

  1377. to the

  1378. cross

  1379. but he

  1380. didn't just

  1381. become a

  1382. human

  1383. he lived

  1384. the life

  1385. of a human

  1386. he didn't

  1387. just become

  1388. a human

  1389. he lived

  1390. the life

  1391. of a human

  1392. he experienced

  1393. the ups

  1394. and downs

  1395. that each

  1396. and every

  1397. one of us

  1398. experience

  1399. in this

  1400. life

  1401. Dane

  1402. Ortlund

  1403. says it

  1404. well

  1405. when he

  1406. states

  1407. he says

  1408. he came

  1409. as a

  1410. normal

  1411. man

  1412. to

  1413. normal

  1414. men

  1415. he knows

  1416. what it

  1417. is like

  1418. to be

  1419. thirsty

  1420. hungry

  1421. despised

  1422. rejected

  1423. scorned

  1424. shamed

  1425. embarrassed

  1426. abandoned

  1427. misunderstood

  1428. falsely

  1429. accused

  1430. suffocated

  1431. tortured

  1432. and killed

  1433. he knows

  1434. what it

  1435. is to

  1436. be

  1437. lonely

  1438. his friends

  1439. abandoned

  1440. him

  1441. when he

  1442. needed

  1443. them

  1444. the most

  1445. Jesus

  1446. is not

  1447. just a

  1448. distant

  1449. savior

  1450. who wants

  1451. nothing to

  1452. do with

  1453. us

  1454. he is a

  1455. close friend

  1456. who understands

  1457. better than

  1458. anyone

  1459. what it is

  1460. that we're

  1461. going through

  1462. in this

  1463. life

  1464. he's not

  1465. just one

  1466. who saves

  1467. and then

  1468. leaves us

  1469. alone

  1470. he's one

  1471. who saves

  1472. and draws

  1473. us closer

  1474. and closer

  1475. to him

  1476. no one

  1477. is better

  1478. at mourning

  1479. with those

  1480. who mourn

  1481. than Jesus

  1482. he is a

  1483. savior

  1484. who is

  1485. always

  1486. close

  1487. our

  1488. hardships

  1489. our

  1490. difficulties

  1491. our

  1492. sin

  1493. does not

  1494. push him

  1495. away

  1496. he is an

  1497. ever present

  1498. help

  1499. in trouble

  1500. today

  1501. as we have

  1502. looked at this

  1503. passage

  1504. we've gone

  1505. over some

  1506. pretty amazing

  1507. truths

  1508. truths that

  1509. we all want

  1510. to be true

  1511. of our life

  1512. truths that

  1513. are true

  1514. of every

  1515. person

  1516. who places

  1517. their faith

  1518. and their

  1519. trust

  1520. in Jesus

  1521. but the

  1522. question

  1523. that I want

  1524. us to

  1525. all answer

  1526. honestly

  1527. today

  1528. is this

  1529. have you

  1530. placed your

  1531. faith and

  1532. your trust

  1533. in Jesus

  1534. have you

  1535. trusted him

  1536. as your

  1537. Lord and

  1538. Savior

  1539. we are all

  1540. sinners

  1541. we are all

  1542. dead in our

  1543. sins

  1544. without hope

  1545. but God

  1546. but God

  1547. sent

  1548. Jesus

  1549. fully God

  1550. fully man

  1551. to live

  1552. the life

  1553. we couldn't

  1554. to experience

  1555. all the

  1556. things that

  1557. we experience

  1558. to be able

  1559. to identify

  1560. with us

  1561. in every

  1562. way

  1563. to go to

  1564. the cross

  1565. and pay

  1566. the penalty

  1567. of our

  1568. sin

  1569. so that

  1570. we can

  1571. experience

  1572. new life

  1573. in Christ

  1574. this new

  1575. life not

  1576. only changes

  1577. it not only

  1578. changes our

  1579. eternity

  1580. but it

  1581. changes our

  1582. today

  1583. it changes

  1584. our life

  1585. each and

  1586. every day

  1587. and the

  1588. question

  1589. becomes

  1590. do you

  1591. believe

  1592. this

  1593. have you

  1594. given

  1595. your life

  1596. to Jesus

  1597. if not

  1598. then I

  1599. encourage you

  1600. to do

  1601. that today

  1602. in just a

  1603. moment we're

  1604. going to sing

  1605. a song of

  1606. invitation

  1607. a song

  1608. of commitment

  1609. where you'll

  1610. have a chance

  1611. to respond

  1612. and if God

  1613. is speaking

  1614. to you

  1615. this morning

  1616. if you're

  1617. wanting to

  1618. give your

  1619. life to

  1620. Christ

  1621. then I

  1622. encourage you

  1623. to take

  1624. a step

  1625. forward

  1626. I would

  1627. love nothing

  1628. more than

  1629. to talk

  1630. with you

  1631. and point

  1632. you to

  1633. Jesus

  1634. the only

  1635. one that

  1636. can save

  1637. but I

  1638. also believe

  1639. that we

  1640. could all

  1641. benefit

  1642. from spending

  1643. time

  1644. reflecting

  1645. on who

  1646. Jesus

  1647. is

  1648. so much

  1649. of Hebrews

  1650. is reminding

  1651. us of

  1652. who Christ

  1653. is

  1654. and I

  1655. think each

  1656. and every

  1657. one of us

  1658. no matter

  1659. if we just

  1660. placed our

  1661. faith and

  1662. trust in

  1663. Jesus

  1664. or if

  1665. we've

  1666. been a

  1667. follower of

  1668. Jesus

  1669. our entire

  1670. lives

  1671. I believe

  1672. we can

  1673. all benefit

  1674. from

  1675. understanding

  1676. and reflecting

  1677. on who

  1678. Jesus is

  1679. and so let

  1680. me encourage

  1681. all of us

  1682. let who

  1683. Christ is

  1684. change who

  1685. you are

  1686. let who

  1687. Jesus is

  1688. shape and

  1689. mold who

  1690. you are

  1691. Father we

  1692. thank you so

  1693. much

  1694. we thank you

  1695. for your word

  1696. we thank you

  1697. for what it

  1698. teaches us

  1699. about you

  1700. Lord we

  1701. thank you

  1702. for Hebrews

  1703. we thank

  1704. you as

  1705. difficult as

  1706. it can

  1707. be at

  1708. times to

  1709. interpret and

  1710. to think

  1711. about Lord

  1712. we thank

  1713. you that

  1714. it points

  1715. us to

  1716. you over

  1717. and over

  1718. and over

  1719. again reminding

  1720. us that you

  1721. are so much

  1722. greater than

  1723. anything in

  1724. this world

  1725. reminding us

  1726. that our

  1727. hope is only

  1728. found in

  1729. you and

  1730. so Lord I

  1731. pray that if

  1732. there's someone

  1733. here today

  1734. that doesn't

  1735. know you as

  1736. their Lord and

  1737. Savior that you

  1738. would come into

  1739. their life

  1740. that you

  1741. would show

  1742. them the way

  1743. to the Father

  1744. that you

  1745. would give

  1746. them a new

  1747. eternity

  1748. set them on

  1749. a path that

  1750. spends an

  1751. eternity with

  1752. you and not

  1753. only that but

  1754. changes our

  1755. life each and

  1756. every day

  1757. but Lord I

  1758. pray also that

  1759. you be with

  1760. each and every

  1761. one of us

  1762. who may have

  1763. given our life

  1764. to you many

  1765. years ago

  1766. may we see

  1767. you more

  1768. clearly

  1769. and may who

  1770. you are

  1771. change who

  1772. we are

  1773. and we ask

  1774. all this in

  1775. Jesus name

  1776. Amen
