  1. Children, we are ready for Children's Church at this time. You may make your way to the back.

  2. My goodness, that is a lot of kids making their way to the back.

  3. And what a joy it is to see as they're making their way to go learn about Jesus.

  4. It's always encouraging when Savannah shares what they're going through in Children's Church,

  5. how they're learning about Scripture.

  6. They're not just, you know, taking a story here and there.

  7. They're walking through Scripture.

  8. They've already gone through the entire Bible in the last year and a half or so.

  9. I was thinking, I was like, if I make it through the entire Bible at the pace that we're going through Hebrews,

  10. it may be 10 or 15 years before we do that.

  11. They've gone through the whole thing in a year and a half.

  12. And it's just a joy to hear all of those questions that come as they come home

  13. and talk about what they've learned in Children's Church.

  14. But today we're going to be continuing in our study of the book of Hebrews.

  15. We're going to be in Hebrews chapter 4, verses 1 through 13.

    Hebrews 4:1–13

  16. But throughout our study of the book of Hebrews thus far,

  17. we've seen and heard some pretty remarkable statements about who Christ is.

  18. We've seen some pretty remarkable statements about who Jesus is,

  19. what He came to do, some things that He accomplished while He was here.

  20. We've seen that Jesus is the Son of God.

  21. We've seen that He's the revelation of God.

  22. We've seen that He's the fulfillment of God's revelation in the Old Testament,

  23. the heir of all things, the agent of creation, the radiance of God's glory.

  24. And that's just the first three verses of Hebrews.

  25. And then as we continue through Hebrews, we've seen that He is far superior than the angels.

  26. He's greater than Moses.

  27. He's greater than anything else in all of creation,

  28. as much superior as the builder of the house is than the house itself.

  29. We were called to consider Jesus,

  30. to pay close attention to who He is so that we don't miss who He is.

  31. And now this week, we are seeing why this is so important,

  32. why this is such a big deal in our relationship with God.

  33. And so if you have a copy of God's Word with you this morning,

  34. I want to invite you to turn with me to Hebrews chapter 4.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  35. And we're going to read the first 13 verses together today.

  36. Hebrews chapter 4, starting in verse 1, says this,

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  37. Therefore,

  38. Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands,

  39. let us fear, lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it.

  40. For good news came to us just as to them,

  41. but the message they heard did not benefit them,

  42. because they were not united by faith with those who listened.

  43. For we who believed entered that rest, as He has said,

  44. As I swore my wrath, they shall not enter my rest.

  45. Although His works were finished from the foundation of the world,

  46. for He has somewhere spoken on the seventh day in this way,

  47. and God rested on the seventh day from all His works.

  48. And again, in this passage, He said,

  49. They shall not enter my rest.

  50. Since, therefore, it remains for some to enter it,

  51. and those who formerly received the good news

  52. failed to enter because of disobedience,

  53. again He points a certain day.

  54. Today, saying through David so long afterward,

  55. in the words already quoted,

  56. Today, if you hear His voice,

  57. do not harden your hearts.

  58. For if Joshua had given them rest,

  59. God would not have spoken of another day later on.

  60. So then there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

  61. For whoever has entered God's rest

  62. has also rested from His works,

  63. as God did from His.

  64. Let us, therefore, strive to enter that rest,

  65. so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

  66. For the Word of God is living and active,

  67. sharper than any two-edged sword,

  68. piercing to the division of soul and of spirit,

  69. of joints and of marrow,

  70. and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

  71. And no creature is hidden from His sight,

  72. but all are naked and exposed in the eyes of Him

  73. to whom we must give account.

  74. This passage is a somewhat difficult passage

  75. to consider all that is being said,

  76. But this morning,

  77. I wanted to break it up into three questions

  78. that I feel like the author is begging us to ask

  79. as we go through this.

  80. And so the first question to begin with

  81. that I want us to ask is,

  82. what are we to fear?

  83. What are we to fear?

  84. Verse, we get this in the first five verses,

  85. but verse one right here says,

  86. therefore, while the promise of entering His rest

  87. still stands, let us fear,

  88. lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it.

  89. I almost feel like a broken record

  90. as we've gone through the book of Hebrews.

  91. And I keep telling you,

  92. whenever you see a therefore,

  93. make sure that you pay attention

  94. to what it is therefore.

  95. But if you just take a quick glance

  96. at the book of Hebrews so far,

  97. you'll see over and over again

  98. the use of the word therefore.

  99. In fact, in our study today,

  100. that's how we're going to be breaking up

  101. our passage is going from therefore to therefore

  102. and asking these questions

  103. and seeking to try to find what God is telling us.

  104. This passage is telling us

  105. that we should fear.

  106. But it's also telling us to go back

  107. to the first or the last two verses

  108. of chapter three,

  109. where it says,

  110. Now, if you have certain translations,

  111. they won't use fear here in this next passage,

  112. in this next verse in chapter one of,

  113. or chapter four, verse one,

  114. and they might use afraid,

  115. but sometimes they use the word be careful.

  116. Now, I want you to be careful

  117. if your translation uses be careful,

  118. because I don't want it to take away

  119. from the gravity of what the author

  120. is trying to communicate here.

  121. The author is telling us to be afraid,

  122. to fear this.

  123. The passage is telling us to fear.

  124. This seems almost counterintuitive

  125. when you look at the rest of Scripture.

  126. Because when you look throughout Scripture,

  127. you see over and over again

  128. the word of God telling us,

  129. don't be afraid.

  130. In fact, so many of the commands

  131. that we see throughout Scripture

  132. are don't be afraid,

  133. fear not,

  134. don't be anxious.

  135. And it's telling us over and over again

  136. not to be afraid.

  137. In fact, when you look at

  138. the Great Commission,

  139. and when Jesus is telling us

  140. to go and make disciples of all nations,

  141. the final thing he says,

  142. and lo, I am with you always,

  143. even to the end of the age.

  144. And it's implying here

  145. that what he's asking them to do

  146. is a big task.

  147. But he's saying,

  148. hey, it's all right

  149. because I'm going to be with you for this.

  150. I'm going to walk with you through this.

  151. And so we see over and over again

  152. we're told not to be afraid.

  153. But this passage clearly tells us

  154. to be afraid.

  155. And what we are fearing

  156. has very serious consequences.

  157. The passage says,

  158. let us fear lest any of you

  159. should seem to have failed to reach it.

  160. The it here is God's rest.

  161. The restful refuge of salvation.

  162. Be afraid so that you don't miss God's rest.

  163. But what is it that we are to fear

  164. that will cause us to miss God's rest?

  165. And like we said,

  166. the previous verse in chapter 3

  167. is most helpful with this.

  168. Where it says,

  169. so we see that they were unable to enter

  170. because of unbelief.

  171. Therefore, fear that unbelief

  172. because that is what will keep you

  173. from entering God's rest.

  174. Fear that unbelief

  175. because that is what will prevent you

  176. from entering God's rest.

  177. John Piper once said,

  178. he says,

  179. normal Christian life

  180. is aware of the fearful danger of unbelief,

  181. but it does not live paralyzed

  182. or terrorized by it.

  183. It lives in faith.

  184. So let us humbly go to this text

  185. and ask a very logical question

  186. that comes from this.

  187. As believers,

  188. are we supposed to live our lives

  189. in fear of missing heaven?

  190. As believers,

  191. are we supposed to live our lives

  192. in fear of missing heaven?

  193. And before we answer that,

  194. I want you to consider

  195. what the author has already told us

  196. back in chapter 2.

  197. If you would look back over to chapter 2,

  198. starting in verse 14,

  199. it says this,

  200. since therefore the children

  201. share in flesh and blood,

  202. he himself likewise partook

  203. of the same things

  204. that through death,

  205. he might destroy the one

  206. who has the power of death,

  207. that is the devil,

  208. and deliver all those

  209. who through fear of death

  210. were subject to lifelong slavery.

  211. You see,

  212. clearly Christ died

  213. to deliver us

  214. from this slavish fear.

  215. Christ wants us

  216. to be a fearless people.

  217. Christ not only

  218. broke the curse of sin,

  219. that is death,

  220. but he also delivered us

  221. from the devil

  222. who leverages that fear of death

  223. over us

  224. to keep us enslaved.

  225. Jesus' death set us free

  226. not only from sin,

  227. but also from the fear of death.

  228. And this should change our lives

  229. because you can really live for Christ

  230. only when you understand

  231. that death has no power over you.

  232. Then it gives you the power

  233. to live for him.

  234. He wants us to share

  235. with our neighbors.

  236. He wants us to share

  237. with our coworkers,

  238. with our classmates,

  239. without fear.

  240. Christ wants us to go

  241. to unreached people groups

  242. all over the world

  243. without fear.

  244. Faith in the promises of God

  245. makes you fearless

  246. before the threats of men.

  247. And so in short,

  248. what we're seeing here

  249. is one thing to fear

  250. is not believing the promises

  251. that make you fearless.

  252. And so one of the things

  253. that we're seeing here

  254. is that we should fear

  255. is not believing in the promises

  256. that make you fearless.

  257. The warning here

  258. is against unbelief.

  259. He is talking to the church

  260. and so it seems that some

  261. within the church

  262. that may have professed Christ

  263. at some point,

  264. but it is clear

  265. that their actions

  266. show that they are not

  267. followers of Christ

  268. because they are following

  269. something else.

  270. So the author is saying,

  271. he says,

  272. you need to be afraid

  273. because there is a lot

  274. at stake in not believing.

  275. You see,

  276. perseverance

  277. is the evidence

  278. that you truly belong

  279. to Christ.

  280. In other words,

  281. following Christ

  282. is the evidence

  283. that you are a follower

  284. of Christ.

  285. Following Christ

  286. is the evidence

  287. that you are actually

  288. a follower of Christ.

  289. Those who are truly saved,

  290. who have truly placed

  291. their faith

  292. and their trust in Jesus,

  293. those who have seen

  294. that Jesus is far greater

  295. than anything

  296. and everything

  297. in this world

  298. are the ones

  299. who persevere.

  300. They are the ones

  301. who follow Jesus.

  302. And so we are to fear

  303. that unbelief,

  304. but we also see here

  305. there's a sense of urgency

  306. in this passage.

  307. I don't know if you picked up

  308. on it as we first read

  309. through it,

  310. but looking back

  311. at verse 1 again,

  312. it says,

  313. therefore,

  314. therefore,

  315. while the promise

  316. of entering

  317. his rest

  318. still stands,

  319. let us fear

  320. lest any of you

  321. should seem

  322. to have failed

  323. to reach it.

  324. While the promise

  325. of entering

  326. his rest

  327. still stands.

  328. It seems that

  329. some Jews

  330. were in danger

  331. of talking themselves

  332. out of trusting

  333. in Christ

  334. because they may have

  335. thought they had missed it.

  336. They had missed

  337. the coming Messiah.

  338. They realized

  339. that while he was here,

  340. they didn't see him

  341. as the coming Messiah.

  342. They didn't see him

  343. for who he truly is

  344. and they missed it.

  345. And so now

  346. they're afraid

  347. that,

  348. well,

  349. maybe I've just messed up.

  350. Maybe I have messed up

  351. and we've just missed this

  352. and we can't come

  353. to faith in Christ anymore.

  354. The author is saying,

  355. you have no reason

  356. to believe this

  357. because this offer

  358. still stands for you.

  359. This offer

  360. still stands.

  361. As John MacArthur

  362. notes,

  363. he says,

  364. they did have reason

  365. to be afraid.

  366. Not because they had

  367. lost the opportunity

  368. for salvation,

  369. but because they could

  370. lose it

  371. if they continued

  372. to put off

  373. accepting Christ

  374. as their personal Savior.

  375. Yes,

  376. be afraid.

  377. Not because of

  378. living a life

  379. that prevents you

  380. from coming to faith

  381. in Christ,

  382. but because

  383. there will come a day

  384. when that is no longer

  385. an option.

  386. If you think

  387. you've missed

  388. your opportunity,

  389. then let me tell you,

  390. if you have breath

  391. in your lungs,

  392. if you have breath

  393. in your lungs,

  394. you can accept

  395. Christ

  396. as your Savior.

  397. This week,

  398. I was reading

  399. a story,

  400. a biography

  401. of Mel Trotter.

  402. I don't know

  403. if many of you

  404. probably haven't heard

  405. of Mel Trotter before,

  406. but Mel Trotter

  407. in the latter half

  408. of his life

  409. was an incredibly

  410. gifted Bible teacher.

  411. And not only

  412. was he an incredibly

  413. gifted Bible teacher,

  414. but he also

  415. spent much

  416. of his life

  417. reaching out

  418. to the community

  419. in Grand Rapids,

  420. Michigan.

  421. Reaching out

  422. and serving God

  423. and providing hope,

  424. providing food

  425. for many

  426. who were suffering.

  427. But that came

  428. on the heels

  429. of a life

  430. spent living

  431. for himself.

  432. That came on the heels

  433. of a life spent

  434. where he was

  435. very much

  436. focused on

  437. on him

  438. and whatever

  439. he wanted.

  440. For much

  441. of his life,

  442. Mel had

  443. a drinking problem

  444. that was as bad

  445. of a problem

  446. as you could

  447. possibly imagine.

  448. His children

  449. starved

  450. because of his,

  451. spent his money

  452. on alcohol.

  453. In fact,

  454. his daughter

  455. died of malnutrition

  456. at the age of four

  457. because they had

  458. no money for food

  459. because anything

  460. and everything

  461. that they had,

  462. Mel spent on

  463. buying more alcohol

  464. and trying to

  465. focus on himself

  466. in fact,

  467. when his daughter

  468. died,

  469. the neighbors

  470. came together

  471. and they pulled

  472. their money together

  473. so that they could

  474. provide a burial

  475. for the little girl.

  476. And so they,

  477. they pulled their

  478. money together,

  479. bought a casket,

  480. bought a set of clothes

  481. for her to be buried in.

  482. But,

  483. Mel broke into

  484. the mortuary,

  485. stole the clothes

  486. off of his daughter

  487. and traded it in

  488. for another drink.

  489. You think,

  490. my goodness,

  491. this is a terrible.

  492. But it was shortly

  493. after that,

  494. that Jesus Christ

  495. reached down

  496. and got a hold

  497. of Mel's life.

  498. Got a hold of him

  499. and completely

  500. changed the way

  501. he was living

  502. and what he was

  503. giving his life to.

  504. And he went on

  505. to faithfully

  506. serve the Lord,

  507. reaching many

  508. that everyone else

  509. thought was too far gone.

  510. Mel began to have

  511. a ministry reaching

  512. those that nobody

  513. else wanted to reach.

  514. Nobody else

  515. would give a second

  516. chance to.

  517. And so Mel began

  518. to reach out to them

  519. and he did this

  520. until the day

  521. that he died

  522. until he was able

  523. to see his daughter

  524. in heaven again.

  525. God changed his life.

  526. You see,

  527. what you have done

  528. is not what the author

  529. is telling you

  530. to be afraid of.

  531. It's not believing

  532. in the promises

  533. of God

  534. while you have time.

  535. There's no way

  536. around it.

  537. This is a challenging

  538. passage for us

  539. to consider

  540. and to wrap

  541. our minds around.

  542. On the one hand,

  543. the author is not

  544. trying to cause

  545. unnecessary fear

  546. in our lives.

  547. For those who've

  548. truly placed their faith

  549. and their trust

  550. in Jesus,

  551. the author is not

  552. trying to cause us

  553. to unnecessarily

  554. have fear.

  555. He's not saying,

  556. do you know

  557. that you know

  558. that you know

  559. that you know

  560. that you know

  561. you better walk

  562. the aisle each week

  563. to make sure

  564. that you know

  565. that you're saved.

  566. He's not doing that.

  567. But He is saying,

  568. don't put your hope

  569. in a prayer

  570. that you prayed

  571. at one time

  572. or in a baptism

  573. that you had

  574. where your life

  575. never changed,

  576. that you did

  577. just because

  578. your friends

  579. were doing it.

  580. You see,

  581. our assurance

  582. is our perseverance

  583. in our walk

  584. with Christ.

  585. So what are we

  586. to fear?

  587. Not believing

  588. the promises

  589. of God.

  590. But next,

  591. we're to consider

  592. this question.

  593. What is it that

  594. we're putting

  595. our faith in?

  596. What are we

  597. to fear?

  598. Not believing

  599. the promises

  600. of God.

  601. Which leads us

  602. to the next question.

  603. What are we

  604. putting our faith

  605. in?

  606. Starting in verse 6,

  607. it says,

  608. since therefore

  609. it remains

  610. for some

  611. to enter it

  612. and those

  613. who formerly

  614. received the good

  615. news

  616. failed to enter

  617. because of

  618. disobedience.

  619. Again,

  620. He appoints

  621. a certain day.

  622. Today,

  623. saying through

  624. David so long

  625. afterward

  626. in the words

  627. already quoted,

  628. today,

  629. if you hear

  630. His voice,

  631. do not harden

  632. your hearts.

  633. For if Joshua

  634. had given them rest,

  635. God would not

  636. have spoken

  637. another day

  638. later on.

  639. so then

  640. there remains

  641. a Sabbath rest

  642. for the people

  643. of God.

  644. For whoever

  645. has entered

  646. God's rest

  647. has also

  648. rested

  649. from His works

  650. as God

  651. did from His.

  652. We're reminded

  653. again in verse 6

  654. that the Israelites

  655. failed to enter

  656. because of

  657. disobedience.

  658. And then

  659. in verse 7,

  660. the author

  661. quotes Psalm 95

  662. again saying,

  663. today if you

  664. hear His voice,

  665. do not harden

  666. your hearts.

  667. The point here

  668. is made clear

  669. for us.

  670. Be serious

  671. about making sure

  672. you don't end up

  673. like the Israelites

  674. dying in the wilderness

  675. and failing

  676. to enter

  677. God's rest.

  678. Michael Kruger,

  679. who's been

  680. incredibly helpful

  681. in the study

  682. and preparation

  683. of these messages,

  684. rightly says,

  685. he says,

  686. our modern world

  687. needs this message

  688. more than ever.

  689. Few today

  690. take spiritual

  691. matters seriously.

  692. thoughts of eternity

  693. are dismissed

  694. with a wave

  695. of a hand

  696. as if things

  697. will work themselves

  698. out in the end.

  699. Sadly,

  700. such an approach

  701. is precisely

  702. what the author

  703. is warning

  704. us against.

  705. You see,

  706. no one is going

  707. to work

  708. their way

  709. into heaven

  710. and no one

  711. is going to

  712. stumble their way

  713. into heaven.

  714. You can't be

  715. good enough,

  716. you can't do

  717. enough good

  718. to outweigh

  719. your bad,

  720. your works

  721. will never

  722. save you.

  723. And at the same

  724. time,

  725. no one is going

  726. to stumble

  727. their way

  728. into heaven

  729. by not

  730. taking seriously

  731. the word

  732. of God,

  733. by not

  734. understanding

  735. that there

  736. is a way,

  737. but we must

  738. follow God's

  739. way.

  740. That the only

  741. way to the

  742. father is

  743. through the

  744. son.

  745. No one's

  746. going to

  747. just live

  748. this life

  749. ignoring

  750. what the

  751. scripture

  752. says

  753. and then

  754. just say,

  755. you know

  756. what,

  757. at the end

  758. it's all

  759. going to

  760. work itself

  761. out.

  762. I'm going

  763. to probably

  764. live a better

  765. life than

  766. most and so

  767. that'll just

  768. help me get

  769. right on in.

  770. That's not

  771. the case.

  772. And so the

  773. author is

  774. warning us

  775. against this.

  776. But then

  777. in verse 10

  778. is a beautiful

  779. picture of

  780. the gospel.

  781. We get to

  782. verse 10

  783. and it's just

  784. this beautiful

  785. picture of

  786. the gospel.

  787. I don't know

  788. if you've

  789. ever done

  790. this,

  791. but if you've

  792. read a passage

  793. of scripture

  794. that you've

  795. read many

  796. times and

  797. then all of

  798. a sudden

  799. reading it

  800. again,

  801. it's like

  802. the words

  803. just jump

  804. right off

  805. at the

  806. page at

  807. you.

  808. It's like

  809. I've read

  810. this over

  811. and over

  812. again,

  813. but all

  814. of a sudden

  815. this time

  816. reading through

  817. it,

  818. these words

  819. just seem

  820. to come

  821. right off

  822. of the

  823. page at

  824. you.

  825. And I

  826. don't know

  827. if it's

  828. because I

  829. hadn't paid

  830. attention

  831. before or

  832. if God's

  833. word is

  834. living and

  835. active like

  836. we're about

  837. to hear.

  838. But verse

  839. 10 this

  840. week hit

  841. me like a

  842. ton of

  843. bricks.

  844. It says

  845. this,

  846. for whoever

  847. has entered

  848. God's rest

  849. has also

  850. rested from

  851. his works

  852. as God

  853. did from

  854. his.

  855. What a

  856. beautiful picture

  857. of the gospel

  858. in a single

  859. phrase.

  860. For whoever

  861. has entered

  862. God's rest

  863. has also

  864. rested from

  865. his works

  866. as God

  867. did from

  868. his.

  869. You see

  870. this verse

  871. powerfully

  872. captures the

  873. gospel in a

  874. single phrase.

  875. The gospel

  876. is not

  877. morality,

  878. it's not

  879. external

  880. religion,

  881. it's not

  882. checking all

  883. the right

  884. boxes,

  885. saying just

  886. the right

  887. words in

  888. the right

  889. order.

  890. The gospel

  891. is the

  892. message of

  893. Christ's

  894. accomplishments

  895. on our

  896. behalf so

  897. that we

  898. might rest

  899. from our

  900. works by

  901. trusting in

  902. his work.

  903. You see,

  904. the gospel

  905. is the

  906. message of

  907. Christ's

  908. accomplishments

  909. on our

  910. behalf so

  911. that we

  912. might rest

  913. from our

  914. works by

  915. trusting in

  916. his work.

  917. When we

  918. trust in

  919. Christ,

  920. we are

  921. resting in

  922. his work.

  923. Jesus

  924. says,

  925. come to

  926. me,

  927. all who

  928. labor and

  929. are heavy

  930. laden,

  931. and I

  932. will give

  933. you rest.

  934. Take my

  935. yoke upon

  936. you and

  937. learn from

  938. me,

  939. for I am

  940. gentle and

  941. lowly in

  942. heart,

  943. and you

  944. will find

  945. rest for

  946. your souls,

  947. for my

  948. yoke is

  949. easy and

  950. my burden

  951. is light.

  952. Here's the

  953. good news.

  954. In Jesus,

  955. God gives

  956. us a

  957. righteousness

  958. that we

  959. do not

  960. have and

  961. that we

  962. cannot

  963. earn on

  964. our own.

  965. This

  966. saving

  967. righteousness

  968. is received

  969. by faith.

  970. It's not

  971. something you

  972. can earn,

  973. and once you

  974. have it,

  975. it's not

  976. something that

  977. you can

  978. lose.

  979. And so

  980. the question

  981. becomes,

  982. what is

  983. your faith

  984. in?

  985. Is it in

  986. the finished

  987. work of

  988. Jesus Christ

  989. on the

  990. cross?

  991. Or is it

  992. in your

  993. own works

  994. that you're

  995. seeking to

  996. try to earn

  997. God's favor

  998. by doing

  999. enough good

  1000. to outweigh

  1001. your bad?

  1002. Our works

  1003. are nothing

  1004. but filthy

  1005. rags.

  1006. Christ's

  1007. work is

  1008. the work

  1009. that is

  1010. finished.

  1011. It's the

  1012. work that

  1013. saves.

  1014. It's the

  1015. only one

  1016. that has

  1017. the power

  1018. to save.

  1019. Here

  1020. recently,

  1021. I've

  1022. gotten to

  1023. have several

  1024. incredibly

  1025. encouraging

  1026. conversations

  1027. with different

  1028. people.

  1029. Recently,

  1030. someone who

  1031. is taking

  1032. these warnings

  1033. that the

  1034. author is

  1035. saying very

  1036. seriously.

  1037. Don't

  1038. just be a

  1039. face in

  1040. the crowd

  1041. but be a

  1042. disciple.

  1043. Their

  1044. testimony was

  1045. very similar

  1046. to mine.

  1047. I grew

  1048. up in

  1049. church.

  1050. I grew

  1051. up with

  1052. seeing their

  1053. friends walk

  1054. the aisle,

  1055. make professions

  1056. of faith,

  1057. and then all

  1058. of a sudden

  1059. you realize,

  1060. you know what,

  1061. it's probably

  1062. my turn next.

  1063. And so just

  1064. walking the aisle

  1065. because you see

  1066. all of your

  1067. friends doing

  1068. it.

  1069. And this

  1070. person says,

  1071. look,

  1072. I realize

  1073. that I

  1074. haven't done

  1075. this.

  1076. I haven't

  1077. actually placed

  1078. my faith and

  1079. trust in Jesus.

  1080. What I was

  1081. doing was just

  1082. something to

  1083. fit in with

  1084. the rest of

  1085. the crowd,

  1086. with my

  1087. friends.

  1088. It was what

  1089. it was expected

  1090. of me to

  1091. do.

  1092. But now I'm

  1093. following Christ

  1094. and so I want

  1095. to be obedient.

  1096. And it's these

  1097. conversations like

  1098. this that are

  1099. incredibly encouraging

  1100. but also that

  1101. give greatness to

  1102. this, making

  1103. sure that we

  1104. fear lest any

  1105. of us should

  1106. seem to have

  1107. failed to

  1108. reach it.

  1109. the very

  1110. serious question

  1111. that we must

  1112. all ask is

  1113. this, what

  1114. is my faith

  1115. in?

  1116. And it's my

  1117. prayer that,

  1118. is it in a

  1119. prayer that I

  1120. said at one

  1121. time that

  1122. really hasn't

  1123. changed my

  1124. life?

  1125. Is it in a

  1126. baptism that I

  1127. did because my

  1128. friends were doing

  1129. it?

  1130. Or is my faith

  1131. in Jesus

  1132. Christ and his

  1133. finished work on

  1134. the cross that

  1135. actually has the

  1136. power to save

  1137. because this is

  1138. the only one

  1139. that has power.

  1140. What are we to

  1141. fear?

  1142. Not believing the

  1143. promises of God.

  1144. What are we to

  1145. put our faith in,

  1146. the finished work

  1147. of Christ?

  1148. Now finally I

  1149. want us to

  1150. consider what is

  1151. our foundation

  1152. built on?

  1153. What is our

  1154. foundation built

  1155. on?

  1156. Verse 11 says,

  1157. let us therefore

  1158. strive to enter

  1159. that rest so

  1160. that no one

  1161. may fall by the

  1162. same sort of

  1163. disobedience.

  1164. For the word

  1165. of God is

  1166. living and

  1167. active, sharper

  1168. than any

  1169. two-edged sword,

  1170. piercing to the

  1171. division of soul

  1172. and of spirit,

  1173. of joints and

  1174. of marrow,

  1175. discerning the

  1176. thoughts and

  1177. intentions of

  1178. the heart.

  1179. And no creature

  1180. is hidden from

  1181. his sight, but

  1182. all are naked

  1183. and exposed to

  1184. the eyes of him

  1185. to whom we

  1186. must give

  1187. account.

  1188. Verse 11

  1189. begins to bring

  1190. this home for

  1191. us.

  1192. We have been

  1193. told to fear

  1194. unbelief.

  1195. We've been

  1196. told where to

  1197. place our trust

  1198. and our faith.

  1199. Now we are

  1200. told the why.

  1201. In light of what

  1202. is just said,

  1203. let us make

  1204. every effort to

  1205. enter his

  1206. rest.

  1207. We must not be

  1208. like the Israelites

  1209. in the wilderness,

  1210. but rather we must

  1211. strive to enter

  1212. his rest.

  1213. In other words,

  1214. we must work

  1215. at resting.

  1216. We must work

  1217. at resting.

  1218. This means that

  1219. we must work

  1220. against all

  1221. our efforts to

  1222. prove our

  1223. righteousness.

  1224. We must work

  1225. against all of

  1226. our efforts to

  1227. try to think that

  1228. we can be good

  1229. enough, that we

  1230. can earn favor

  1231. from God by our

  1232. works.

  1233. We must work

  1234. against all our

  1235. efforts to

  1236. justify ourselves.

  1237. And we do

  1238. this through

  1239. God's word.

  1240. We do this

  1241. through, as we

  1242. mentioned last

  1243. week, encouraging

  1244. one another, keeping

  1245. each other

  1246. accountable.

  1247. this is one of

  1248. the things that

  1249. we do each

  1250. week in

  1251. corporate worship.

  1252. When we hear

  1253. God's word

  1254. proclaimed, it

  1255. should be

  1256. encouraging us

  1257. to put our

  1258. faith in Jesus,

  1259. to trust him

  1260. more.

  1261. This is what we

  1262. do when we

  1263. sing together.

  1264. This is why

  1265. the words of

  1266. the songs that

  1267. we sing matter,

  1268. because words

  1269. have meaning.

  1270. And we must

  1271. sing words that

  1272. proclaim truth,

  1273. the truth of

  1274. God's word.

  1275. This is what

  1276. we do when we

  1277. pray together.

  1278. This is what

  1279. we do when we

  1280. get involved

  1281. with small

  1282. groups and

  1283. keep each

  1284. other accountable.

  1285. But the

  1286. author is now

  1287. highlighting the

  1288. role of God's

  1289. word in this,

  1290. being the

  1291. foundation that

  1292. we build our

  1293. lives on,

  1294. and what keeps

  1295. us from

  1296. believing lies

  1297. the world is

  1298. trying to tell

  1299. us.

  1300. Because here's

  1301. the thing,

  1302. if you don't

  1303. know the

  1304. truth, if you

  1305. don't know

  1306. God's word,

  1307. then it becomes

  1308. very easy to

  1309. believe a lie.

  1310. It becomes

  1311. really easy to

  1312. believe what

  1313. everybody else

  1314. says if you

  1315. don't know

  1316. truth, if you're

  1317. not building your

  1318. life on this

  1319. foundation.

  1320. And many today

  1321. will say they

  1322. would like to

  1323. take Jesus

  1324. apart from

  1325. scripture.

  1326. They may not

  1327. say it openly

  1328. like that, but

  1329. they say it with

  1330. their lives.

  1331. They say it with

  1332. their lives.

  1333. This grace part,

  1334. it sounds great.

  1335. The fact that

  1336. Jesus saves,

  1337. that's amazing.

  1338. But all of

  1339. these ideas

  1340. about marriage

  1341. and gender,

  1342. all of this

  1343. talk about

  1344. caring for

  1345. others more

  1346. than you care

  1347. for yourself,

  1348. that stuff

  1349. changes the

  1350. way that you

  1351. live.

  1352. That stuff

  1353. changes everything.

  1354. Those things

  1355. can be

  1356. offensive.

  1357. But we

  1358. can't take

  1359. Christ apart

  1360. from his

  1361. word.

  1362. You don't

  1363. get to pick

  1364. and choose.

  1365. Al Mohler

  1366. makes the

  1367. correct statement

  1368. when he says,

  1369. Christ cannot

  1370. be divorced

  1371. from scripture.

  1372. Our knowledge

  1373. of Jesus

  1374. as the divine

  1375. son of God

  1376. and his

  1377. accomplishments

  1378. for us

  1379. only come

  1380. through scripture.

  1381. We cannot

  1382. have Jesus

  1383. apart from

  1384. the witness

  1385. of the Bible.

  1386. The two

  1387. are inseparably

  1388. wedded together.

  1389. In this

  1390. passage,

  1391. the author

  1392. makes a couple

  1393. powerful statements

  1394. about God's

  1395. word.

  1396. First,

  1397. the word

  1398. is living

  1399. and active.

  1400. Since God

  1401. is living

  1402. and is the

  1403. author of

  1404. this book,

  1405. it is alive.

  1406. Now,

  1407. this doesn't

  1408. mean that it

  1409. changes or

  1410. it grows up

  1411. or it changes

  1412. from season

  1413. to season,

  1414. but it means

  1415. that it is

  1416. valuable and

  1417. applicable to

  1418. us as it

  1419. ever has

  1420. been.

  1421. It is

  1422. active.

  1423. When you

  1424. look through

  1425. scripture and

  1426. God speaks,

  1427. God also

  1428. works.

  1429. And he

  1430. speaks to

  1431. us through

  1432. his word

  1433. and as

  1434. he speaks

  1435. to us

  1436. through his

  1437. word,

  1438. he works

  1439. in our

  1440. life.

  1441. When God

  1442. speaks,

  1443. he works.

  1444. It's active,

  1445. it's effective

  1446. for us.

  1447. Next,

  1448. we see that

  1449. this word

  1450. is sharper

  1451. than any

  1452. two-edged

  1453. sword.

  1454. The description

  1455. of the

  1456. Bible as a

  1457. sword shows

  1458. that it

  1459. cuts deep.

  1460. It has

  1461. the power

  1462. to cut

  1463. deep.

  1464. When we

  1465. approach

  1466. God's

  1467. word

  1468. humbly

  1469. and we

  1470. try to

  1471. seek and

  1472. apply it

  1473. to our

  1474. lives,

  1475. then we

  1476. not only

  1477. read the

  1478. Bible,

  1479. but it

  1480. begins to

  1481. read us

  1482. as well.

  1483. It begins

  1484. to offer

  1485. insights about

  1486. us that

  1487. we couldn't

  1488. possibly have

  1489. imagined.

  1490. It cuts

  1491. to the

  1492. heart.

  1493. It cuts

  1494. to our

  1495. intentions.

  1496. No other

  1497. book has

  1498. the power

  1499. to do

  1500. this.

  1501. This

  1502. reminds me

  1503. that God's

  1504. word is

  1505. dangerous to

  1506. anyone who

  1507. is seeking

  1508. to live for

  1509. this world.

  1510. If you're

  1511. trying to

  1512. seek to

  1513. live for

  1514. this world,

  1515. then as

  1516. you read

  1517. the Bible,

  1518. it is going

  1519. to be very

  1520. dangerous to

  1521. that way

  1522. of life

  1523. because it

  1524. cuts deep.

  1525. If you want

  1526. to shape

  1527. your heart

  1528. to be more

  1529. like God's

  1530. heart,

  1531. then there

  1532. is no

  1533. substitution

  1534. for His

  1535. word.

  1536. If you want

  1537. to shape

  1538. your heart

  1539. to be more

  1540. like God's

  1541. heart,

  1542. then there

  1543. is absolutely

  1544. no substitution

  1545. for His

  1546. word.

  1547. And reading

  1548. through it,

  1549. it has

  1550. the power

  1551. to change

  1552. our hearts.

  1553. It has

  1554. the power

  1555. to comfort

  1556. us as

  1557. nothing else

  1558. can.

  1559. It has

  1560. words of

  1561. life,

  1562. words that

  1563. give our

  1564. life meaning

  1565. and purpose,

  1566. words that

  1567. are strong

  1568. enough to

  1569. build the

  1570. foundation of

  1571. our lives

  1572. on,

  1573. words that

  1574. are strong

  1575. enough to

  1576. build the

  1577. foundation of

  1578. the church

  1579. on,

  1580. words that

  1581. are strong

  1582. enough to

  1583. turn this

  1584. world upside

  1585. down.

  1586. This word

  1587. has power,

  1588. it is living,

  1589. it is active,

  1590. it is sharper

  1591. than any two-edged

  1592. sword.

  1593. And in the

  1594. context of this

  1595. passage,

  1596. God's words

  1597. give a strong

  1598. warning.

  1599. What are we

  1600. to fear?

  1601. We're to fear

  1602. unbelief.

  1603. I'm not asking

  1604. if you can get

  1605. every answer

  1606. right on a test,

  1607. but I'm asking

  1608. does your

  1609. belief in

  1610. Christ change

  1611. your life?

  1612. Because following

  1613. Christ is the

  1614. witness,

  1615. it's the proof

  1616. that you are a

  1617. follower of

  1618. Christ.

  1619. Christ.

  1620. What are you

  1621. putting your

  1622. faith in?

  1623. Are you

  1624. putting your

  1625. faith in your

  1626. works?

  1627. Or are you

  1628. putting your

  1629. faith in

  1630. Christ's

  1631. finished work

  1632. on the cross?

  1633. No matter if

  1634. you think you

  1635. are too far

  1636. gone, if you

  1637. have breath in

  1638. your lungs,

  1639. if you are

  1640. here today,

  1641. if you are

  1642. listening to

  1643. this message

  1644. today,

  1645. then there is

  1646. hope.

  1647. You can give

  1648. your life to

  1649. Jesus.

  1650. And finally,

  1651. what is the

  1652. foundation of

  1653. your life built

  1654. on?

  1655. See, God's

  1656. word is

  1657. living and

  1658. active.

  1659. It's sharper

  1660. than any

  1661. two-edged

  1662. sword.

  1663. And this is

  1664. how God

  1665. speaks to

  1666. us and

  1667. how he

  1668. shapes us

  1669. primarily.

  1670. And so the

  1671. question is,

  1672. is he speaking

  1673. to you this

  1674. morning?

  1675. Are you ready

  1676. to give your

  1677. life to him?

  1678. Are you ready

  1679. to follow him?

  1680. To share

  1681. your faith?

  1682. To be

  1683. baptized?

  1684. To serve

  1685. on mission

  1686. for him?

  1687. Or to do

  1688. whatever he

  1689. has called

  1690. you to do

  1691. for his

  1692. honor,

  1693. and for

  1694. his glory?

  1695. Because God's

  1696. word always

  1697. calls for a

  1698. response.

  1699. It's not

  1700. written to

  1701. just give you

  1702. more knowledge,

  1703. but it's

  1704. written to

  1705. change your

  1706. life.

  1707. So I want to

  1708. ask you,

  1709. is God speaking

  1710. to you this

  1711. morning through

  1712. his word?

  1713. And if so,

  1714. then I want to

  1715. encourage you

  1716. to respond.

  1717. Father,

  1718. thank you so

  1719. very much

  1720. for your

  1721. word,

  1722. because it

  1723. is living

  1724. and active.

  1725. Just as you

  1726. are alive,

  1727. this word is

  1728. alive.

  1729. Lord,

  1730. it is as

  1731. applicable to

  1732. us today as

  1733. it has ever

  1734. been.

  1735. And it's

  1736. effective to

  1737. change our

  1738. lives.

  1739. And so,

  1740. Lord,

  1741. I pray that

  1742. we come to

  1743. your word

  1744. humbly,

  1745. asking you to

  1746. shape us,

  1747. to mold us,

  1748. and to make us

  1749. more like you.

  1750. Lord,

  1751. if we say that

  1752. we want our

  1753. heart to be

  1754. like your

  1755. heart,

  1756. then,

  1757. Lord,

  1758. give us a

  1759. desire to

  1760. read your

  1761. word,

  1762. to let it

  1763. shape us.

  1764. But also,

  1765. Lord,

  1766. I pray for

  1767. the truth

  1768. that is

  1769. declared in

  1770. that.

  1771. Truth that

  1772. is declared

  1773. today,

  1774. that you

  1775. tell us to

  1776. be afraid,

  1777. afraid of

  1778. unbelief.

  1779. And so,

  1780. Lord,

  1781. I pray that

  1782. there's someone

  1783. here today

  1784. that is

  1785. putting their

  1786. hope for

  1787. eternity in

  1788. a past

  1789. action that

  1790. they didn't

  1791. know what

  1792. they were

  1793. doing,

  1794. possibly.

  1795. That they

  1796. were just

  1797. doing because

  1798. they saw

  1799. their friends

  1800. doing it.

  1801. Lord,

  1802. I pray that

  1803. you help us

  1804. to see

  1805. clearly that

  1806. our faith must

  1807. be placed in

  1808. your finished

  1809. work.

  1810. Not in our

  1811. actions,

  1812. not in

  1813. anything that

  1814. we've done,

  1815. but in what

  1816. you have done

  1817. for us.

  1818. And,

  1819. Lord,

  1820. if we have

  1821. done that,

  1822. I thank you

  1823. for the

  1824. assurance that

  1825. you give us

  1826. that helps

  1827. us to live

  1828. boldly for

  1829. you.

  1830. that helps

  1831. us to live

  1832. without fear

  1833. before men

  1834. because you

  1835. have accomplished

  1836. what we

  1837. couldn't do

  1838. on our

  1839. own.

  1840. And so,

  1841. God,

  1842. I thank you

  1843. for that.

  1844. And,

  1845. Lord,

  1846. I pray that

  1847. as we read

  1848. through your

  1849. word that we

  1850. would apply it

  1851. to our lives,

  1852. that whatever it

  1853. is that you're

  1854. calling us to

  1855. do,

  1856. that our answer

  1857. will be yes.

  1858. I want to

  1859. follow you

  1860. because you

  1861. are better.

  1862. And we ask

  1863. all this in

  1864. Jesus' name.

  1865. Amen.

  1866. I want to

  1867. invite you to

  1868. stand.

  1869. We're going to

  1870. sing a song of

  1871. invitation this

  1872. morning.

  1873. If God is

  1874. speaking to you,

  1875. won't you respond

  1876. as we stand

  1877. together and

  1878. sing?

  1879. Thank you.
