  1. Amen. Amen. Happy Easter, church. I've got to catch my breath. That was amazing. And what a wonderful day it is to praise God. Children, we are ready for Children's Church. You may make your way to the back. Thank you so much, Praistine, for leading us well in those songs as we proclaim who Jesus is.

  2. Oh, what a day to celebrate. I am so glad that you are here to worship with us today. We are here to celebrate that we serve a risen Savior. Amen? Amen. We serve a risen Savior. And that is the greatest news the world has ever heard.

  3. We are here to celebrate the good news that Jesus left the glory of heaven. He humbly lived a perfect life among us. He went to the cross to take your sin and my sin, to nail it to the cross. And because of that, God no longer sees us as an enemy, but He sees us as His children.

  4. He no longer sees your sin. It has been thrown into the sea of His forgetfulness to be remembered no more. Because of this, we are no longer an enemy, but we are a child of God. And if this were not reason enough to celebrate today, then maybe this will get us fired up.

  5. Peter in Acts 2. Amen. It was not possible for death to hold Jesus. And because of that, if you are a child of God, I have good news for you. It is not possible for death to have a grip on you either.

  6. This is why we celebrate. This is why we celebrate. This is the good news of the gospel. Every year at Easter, we have this focus on the resurrection.

  7. We celebrate with great excitement the fact that Jesus is no longer in the tomb. If you go to Israel today and you ask them to take you to the tomb of Jesus, they'll take you there.

  8. You can walk inside the tomb. And guess who's not in the tomb? Jesus. There is not a body in that tomb.

  9. This is what everything hinges on. This is what our hope is based on. This is the most important thing of Christianity.

  10. This is why Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15 3. He says,

  11. For I deliver to you this as of first importance. In other words, although everything in the Bible is important, and everything in the Bible is completely true, not everything holds this weight.

  12. For example, we may disagree on the method of baptism. We may have differences of opinion on pre-meal, post-meal, and ah-meal.

  13. We may differ on our understanding of God's sovereignty and man's free will.

  14. And you may care less about any of those things that I just said.

  15. But the gospel is not something we waver on.

  16. It is the most important. It says,

  17. And that is what everything hinges on.

  18. In fact, Paul goes on to say this,

  19. And if Christ has not been raised,

  20. He says,

  21. Then our preaching is in vain, and our faith is in vain.

  22. If Christ is not raised, then what I'm doing today is in vain.

  23. Then what we are building our lives on is in vain.

  24. This is why Easter is such a big deal.

  25. Because everything is riding on this truth.

  26. You see, Christianity stands or falls on the historical bodily resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

  27. No resurrection, no Christianity.

  28. But if the tomb is empty, if this is true, then it changes everything.

  29. Then it changes everything.

  30. On this Easter Sunday, I want us to look at a passage of Scripture that is incredibly familiar.

  31. It is probably one that many of us have heard many times.

  32. In fact, it may be one of the most familiar passages in all of Scripture.

  33. Or at least it contains the most familiar verse in all of Scripture.

  34. I want us to take a look at John 3, verses 14 through 21.

    John 3:14–21

  35. And it is important to note that as we look at this passage,

  36. we are jumping into the middle of a story.

  37. We are jumping into the middle of this story.

  38. And the story may be familiar.

  39. It is a story that I have been thinking a lot about this week and in the past few weeks.

  40. As we remember this story of Nicodemus coming to meet Jesus at night.

  41. And I think it is important for us to understand who Nicodemus is

  42. and the significance of this to really understand this passage.

  43. You see, Nicodemus was a Pharisee.

  44. He was a Pharisee who understood the Old Testament as good as anybody.

  45. He knew it forwards and backwards.

  46. And as a Pharisee, he had most of, if not the entire Old Testament memorized.

  47. And because of his standing of who he was,

  48. we can almost take it to the bank that he knew everything in the Old Testament

  49. and had it memorized.

  50. Because in this passage, we're also told that Nicodemus,

  51. in addition to being a Pharisee, he was a ruler of Israel.

  52. So in other words, he was probably one of the 70 members of the Sanhedrin,

  53. the rulers of Israel, who there were 70 Pharisees that made up the Sanhedrin.

  54. And he was a part of this.

  55. And so he ruled over Israel.

  56. But then Jesus also tells us that he was the teacher of Israel.

  57. He says, are you not the teacher of Israel?

  58. And so Nicodemus was incredibly well-respected.

  59. Not only was he brilliant, but he was also a pillar of the Jewish community

  60. who is coming to Jesus by night.

  61. And most likely, he's coming to Jesus by night to avoid being seen.

  62. He understands the significance of who Jesus is.

  63. And so he's coming to him to kind of test the waters.

  64. If anybody was going to be able to pick up on who the Messiah was,

  65. surely it would be Nicodemus, the teacher of Israel,

  66. who understood the prophecies, who understood the Old Testament.

  67. And so he's coming to Jesus to try to figure out who he is.

  68. But he's not sure enough, so he wants to come to him at night.

  69. And then after a conversation about the necessity of being born again

  70. and of not being able to save yourself, Jesus tells Nicodemus these words.

  71. And this is where I want us to pick up today as we look at this passage.

  72. And so if you have a copy of God's Word with you,

  73. I want to invite you to open with me to John chapter 3, starting in verse 14.

    John 3 chapter mention

  74. And this is what the Word of the Lord says.

  75. It says,

  76. It says,

  77. Whoever believes in him is not condemned,

  78. but whoever does not believe is condemned already,

  79. because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

  80. And this is the judgment.

  81. The light has come into the world,

  82. and people love darkness rather than the light,

  83. because their works were evil.

  84. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light

  85. and does not come to the light,

  86. lest his works should be exposed.

  87. But whoever does what is true comes to the light,

  88. so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.

  89. Again, much of this passage that we just read is very familiar to us.

  90. It's a story that we've heard over and over again.

  91. In fact, it's so familiar that there's the possibility that we may overlook the significance

  92. of what is being stated here.

  93. But I want us to see a progression of three truths in this passage.

  94. I want us to see a progression of these three truths in this passage

  95. that I hope will help us to clearly look to Jesus and believe.

  96. I want us to see this progression of looking to the cross,

  97. of seeing God's love,

  98. and believing in the gospel.

  99. So to begin with,

  100. this text tells us to look to the cross.

  101. The text tells us to look to the cross.

  102. It says,

  103. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,

  104. so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

  105. that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life.

  106. This may be one of my favorite parts of the conversation

  107. between Jesus and Nicodemus here.

  108. After having this deep theological conversation with Nicodemus,

  109. Jesus tells him,

  110. He says,

  111. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,

  112. so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

  113. that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life.

  114. Again, Nicodemus knows very well this story that Jesus is telling him.

  115. He says,

  116. As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,

  117. so the Son of Man must be lifted up.

  118. This story comes from Numbers chapter 21.

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  119. And in Numbers chapter 21,

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  120. the people of Israel have left Egypt.

  121. God has provided in miraculous ways for them.

  122. He's provided over and over again for these people.

  123. And yet now they're coming and they're complaining.

  124. They're complaining about the deliverance that God has provided.

  125. And if we think back on it,

  126. God has provided in some big ways.

  127. We see the ten plagues in Egypt that God showed Pharaoh to let the people go.

  128. From the Nile turning to blood,

  129. to darkness being on the land,

  130. to the frogs,

  131. to the locusts,

  132. to the cattle,

  133. the livestock being killed,

  134. to the darkness of the land for three days,

  135. and then finally the death of the firstborn.

  136. And so we see God providing,

  137. but God doesn't stop providing there.

  138. He continues to provide in the wilderness.

  139. He continues to protect them.

  140. He continues to lead,

  141. guide,

  142. and direct them.

  143. He continues to give them food and water and everything that they need.

  144. And now the people are complaining.

  145. They're upset about the deliverance that God provided.

  146. He saved them.

  147. And now they're complaining about the salvation that He provided.

  148. And so God sends these snakes among the people.

  149. And this is where we pick up in Numbers chapter 21.

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  150. It says,

  151. Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people,

  152. and they bit the people so that many people of Israel died.

  153. And the people came to Moses and said,

  154. We have sinned,

  155. for we have spoken against the Lord and against you.

  156. Pray to the Lord that He may take away the serpents from us.

  157. So Moses prayed for the people,

  158. and the Lord said to Moses,

  159. Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole.

  160. And everyone who is bitten,

  161. when he sees it,

  162. shall live.

  163. So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole.

  164. And if a serpent bit anyone,

  165. he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

  166. Now you may recognize this symbol,

  167. this picture that is being painted for us here in Numbers.

  168. You may see it at the doctor's office or on a prescription or something like that

  169. because this symbol of a serpent being raised up on a pole

  170. has now made its way into the medical field

  171. so that it represents this medicine,

  172. these doctor's offices,

  173. this healing.

  174. And it's kind of ironic when you think about it.

  175. Without the context of this story,

  176. this would be difficult for us to wrap our minds around.

  177. Why would you use this as a symbol for healing?

  178. And again, now in light of what Jesus is coming to do,

  179. it helps us understand it in an even greater way.

  180. Because even when you look at the story in the Old Testament,

  181. you don't get to see the fulfillment of it yet.

  182. And the story in the Old Testament is interesting.

  183. The people were being bitten by these snakes.

  184. The curse that God has sent is biting them,

  185. and many people are dying.

  186. And then what he tells Moses to do is to take the curse,

  187. take the serpent,

  188. and put it on a pole so that when people look to the curse,

  189. they will be healed from the curse.

  190. And it's kind of strange for us to think about it in this context

  191. until we get to the New Testament,

  192. until we get to Jesus,

  193. and until we understand,

  194. as Paul tells us,

  195. that Christ redeemed us from the curse

  196. by becoming what?

  197. By becoming a curse for us.

  198. He made him to be sin who knew no sin.

  199. He made Jesus to be sin who knew no sin.

  200. And so Jesus becomes a curse for us.

  201. And so when he tells Nicodemus,

  202. as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,

  203. so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

  204. that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

  205. He's telling him a story that he knows.

  206. He's telling that the people of Israel were to look and believe.

  207. They were to look, believe, and be healed from the curse.

  208. Now Jesus is telling Nicodemus,

  209. hey, remember that story?

  210. Yeah, it was paving the way for me.

  211. People must look to the cross,

  212. must look to the Son of Man being lifted up,

  213. who becomes a curse for the people,

  214. who takes their sin on himself.

  215. They must look to the cross.

  216. And so as we think about this,

  217. he brings it home for Nicodemus.

  218. So the Son of Man must be lifted up,

  219. that whoever believes may have eternal life.

  220. We must look to the cross.

  221. But as we look to the cross,

  222. I want us to see something very clearly today.

  223. As we look to the cross,

  224. I want us to see God's love.

  225. I want us to see God's love.

  226. We look to the cross and we see God's love.

  227. For God so loved the world,

  228. that he gave his only Son,

  229. that whoever believes in him should not perish,

  230. but have eternal life.

  231. For God did not send his Son into the world

  232. to condemn the world,

  233. but in order that the world might be saved through him.

  234. This verse right here,

  235. John 3.16,

  236. may be the most famous,

  237. well-known,

  238. and most loved verse in the Bible.

  239. If a person has one verse of Scripture memorized,

  240. there's a good chance it is John 3.16.

  241. It's probably the first verse

  242. that many of us learned as children,

  243. but this verse begins with something

  244. that is easy for us to overlook.

  245. It begins with four.

  246. It shows us that verse 16

  247. connects to verses 14 and 15.

  248. Jesus says that he must be lifted up in death,

  249. and this death is a difficult truth

  250. for us to wrap our minds around,

  251. but verse 16 gives us the why.

  252. The death of Jesus was necessary

  253. because God loved us.

  254. And so let's look at this verse in greater detail.

  255. It says,

  256. For God so loved.

  257. You know,

  258. it's easy for us to read this so

  259. as the amount of love that God has for us.

  260. Much like I may tell my wife or kids

  261. that I love you so much.

  262. And when I tell my wife or my kids

  263. that I love you so much,

  264. what I'm telling them is,

  265. is there's a great amount of love

  266. that I have for you.

  267. And so when they ask me,

  268. Daddy, how much do you love us?

  269. I love you so much.

  270. And it begins to become really easy for us

  271. to think of it in an amount of love.

  272. And it is a true statement that God

  273. has an unbelievable amount of love for us.

  274. But this so is not referring to

  275. how much God loves us,

  276. but rather to how God loves us.

  277. The CSB translates it this way.

  278. It says,

  279. For God loved the world in this way.

  280. Or the ISV,

  281. it says,

  282. For this is how God loved.

  283. It is true that God loves a lot.

  284. He loves you and me a tremendous amount.

  285. But the remarkable truth of this passage

  286. is how God loves.

  287. God demonstrates for His love for us

  288. by laying down His life for ours.

  289. Romans 5, 6 through 8,

  290. it states,

  291. For while we were still weak,

  292. at the right time,

  293. Christ died for the ungodly.

  294. For one will scarcely die

  295. for a righteous person,

  296. though perhaps for a good person,

  297. one would dare even to die.

  298. But God shows His love for us

  299. that while we were still sinners,

  300. Christ died for us.

  301. He died for us.

  302. This is how God loves,

  303. by laying down His life,

  304. by sending Jesus,

  305. who freely laid down His life.

  306. But what is equally remarkable

  307. of how God loves

  308. is who God loves.

  309. It tells us,

  310. For God so loved the world.

  311. You know, again,

  312. a lot of times when we think of the world,

  313. our minds go to

  314. how big God's love for us.

  315. The world is big.

  316. He is huge.

  317. And so we think about God's love

  318. and this vast amount of love,

  319. this big love that He has for us.

  320. And His love is big.

  321. It is sufficient for my sins,

  322. for your sins,

  323. and for the sins of anyone else

  324. who believes in Him.

  325. But most of the time

  326. that world is used

  327. in John's Gospel

  328. and in many other places,

  329. it is referring

  330. to the brokenness of the world.

  331. We're living in this world

  332. for this world.

  333. The sinfulness of the world.

  334. God didn't just send Jesus to die

  335. for people who were trying

  336. their very best.

  337. He didn't just look down

  338. and say,

  339. You know what?

  340. Everybody's doing

  341. a really good job.

  342. They've turned things around a lot.

  343. They're doing pretty good.

  344. They just can't quite

  345. make it over the hump.

  346. And so everybody's trying really hard.

  347. So now that they're trying really hard,

  348. I'm going to send Jesus.

  349. That's not the picture

  350. that we get in Scripture.

  351. What we see in Scripture

  352. is that we were dead

  353. in our sins and trespasses,

  354. that we're following

  355. the course of this world.

  356. The Spirit,

  357. the sons,

  358. is now working

  359. the sons of disobedience.

  360. We're following this world.

  361. We're going in the exact direction

  362. that Satan wants us to go.

  363. We're objects of God's wrath.

  364. And that is when God sends Jesus.

  365. This is a beautiful thing.

  366. This is a beautiful picture

  367. of who God loves.

  368. God didn't just send Jesus to die

  369. for people who were trying their very best,

  370. who were pretty good

  371. and needed a little help.

  372. He sent Jesus for those who hated Him,

  373. for those who were His enemy,

  374. which is all of us.

  375. And then verse 17 tells us

  376. why God loves in this manner.

  377. For God did not send His Son

  378. into the world to condemn the world,

  379. but in order that the world

  380. might be saved through Him.

  381. Why did God love in this manner?

  382. Why did He love the broken?

  383. So that He could provide

  384. a way of salvation.

  385. To me,

  386. what is most remarkable

  387. about this display

  388. of love in Jesus' life

  389. is that He died willingly.

  390. He did this willingly.

  391. We've been going through Hebrews

  392. on Sunday morning

  393. for the last few months,

  394. and soon we're going to be

  395. finding our way to Hebrews chapter 12.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  396. And in Hebrews chapter 12,

    Hebrews 12:2

  397. verse 2,

  398. we are told something

  399. incredible about Jesus.

  400. We're told something

  401. that is remarkable about His love.

  402. And it's a passage

  403. that I've read so many times,

  404. but yet it wasn't until recently

  405. that this verse really began

  406. to come alive for me.

  407. It says this.

  408. It's talking about the joy

  409. that Christ has.

  410. It says,

  411. Looking to Jesus,

  412. the founder and perfecter

  413. of our faith,

  414. who for the joy

  415. that was set before Him

  416. endured the cross,

  417. despising the shame

  418. and is seated

  419. at the right hand

  420. of the throne.

  421. The joy that was set

  422. before Him.

  423. It says that Jesus

  424. endured the cross

  425. for the joy

  426. that was set before Him.

  427. And this is a passage,

  428. a verse that's easy

  429. just to read right over,

  430. but it says

  431. that He endured the cross

  432. for the joy

  433. that was set before Him.

  434. If you think about it

  435. and you think about Jesus' life,

  436. what is the one thing

  437. that He has

  438. on this side of the cross

  439. that He didn't have

  440. on that side of the cross?

  441. He's always had

  442. a perfect relationship

  443. with the Father.

  444. He's always had

  445. perfect communion with Him.

  446. But what's the one thing

  447. that He has

  448. on this side of the cross

  449. that He didn't have

  450. on that side of the cross?

  451. And that's a relationship

  452. with you and me.

  453. We're the joy

  454. that was set before Him.

  455. We're the reason

  456. He endured the cross.

  457. It was love

  458. that kept Him there.

  459. The joy that was set

  460. before Him.

  461. Sally Lloyd-Jones

  462. wrote an incredible

  463. children's book

  464. that I would encourage you

  465. to read to your kids

  466. and then after your kids

  467. are grown,

  468. keep reading it

  469. for yourself

  470. because it is a beautiful

  471. picture of how

  472. Jesus is all

  473. throughout Scripture.

  474. It's the Jesus Storybook Bible

  475. and when it comes

  476. to the cross,

  477. when it comes

  478. to this story,

  479. she says this.

  480. She tells it this way.

  481. She says,

  482. they nailed Jesus

  483. to the cross.

  484. Father, forgive them,

  485. Jesus gasped.

  486. They don't understand

  487. what they're doing.

  488. You say you've come

  489. to rescue us,

  490. people shouted,

  491. but you can't even

  492. rescue yourself.

  493. But they were wrong.

  494. Jesus could have

  495. rescued Himself.

  496. A legion of angels

  497. would have flown

  498. to His side

  499. if He called.

  500. If you're really

  501. the Son of God,

  502. you could just

  503. climb down

  504. off that cross,

  505. they said.

  506. And of course,

  507. they were right.

  508. Jesus could have

  509. climbed down.

  510. Actually,

  511. He could have

  512. just said a word

  513. and made it all stop.

  514. Like when He healed

  515. that little girl

  516. and stilled the storm

  517. and fed 5,000 people.

  518. But Jesus stayed.

  519. You see,

  520. they didn't just,

  521. they didn't understand.

  522. It wasn't the nails

  523. that kept Jesus there.

  524. It wasn't the nails

  525. that kept Jesus

  526. on the cross.

  527. It was love.

  528. Oftentimes,

  529. we play this game

  530. with God.

  531. You know,

  532. like you do

  533. when you're little

  534. and you go out

  535. and pick the daisies.

  536. You know,

  537. He loves me.

  538. He loves me not.

  539. And you go all

  540. the way around it

  541. and a lot of times

  542. we play this game

  543. with God.

  544. You know,

  545. I got a promotion,

  546. a new job.

  547. He loves me.

  548. I lost my job.

  549. He loves me not.

  550. I got married.

  551. He loves me.

  552. That marriage just crumbled.

  553. He loves me not.

  554. And oftentimes,

  555. we play this game

  556. over and over again

  557. in our minds

  558. of God loves me.

  559. He loves me not.

  560. He loves me.

  561. He loves me not.

  562. And it's easy for us

  563. to look at our circumstances

  564. and second guess

  565. God's love for us.

  566. I want to challenge you

  567. to look to the cross

  568. and see God's love

  569. and let it be

  570. what settles the issue

  571. for you once and for all

  572. if God loves you or not.

  573. You see,

  574. it's an argument

  575. from the greater

  576. to the lesser.

  577. If leaving the glory of heaven,

  578. if taking on the sin

  579. of the world,

  580. if becoming a curse,

  581. if the mocking,

  582. if the shame

  583. and death on the cross

  584. didn't keep Jesus

  585. from loving you,

  586. guess what?

  587. Nothing will.

  588. If that didn't keep Him

  589. from loving you,

  590. then nothing will.

  591. And that's something

  592. you can take to the bank.

  593. My hope and prayer today

  594. is that we look to the cross.

  595. We see God's love

  596. and finally we believe the gospel.

  597. Whoever believes in Him

  598. is not condemned,

  599. but whoever does not believe

  600. is condemned already

  601. because he has not believed

  602. in the name of the only Son of God.

  603. You see,

  604. this passage clearly shows

  605. that there is only one way

  606. to the Father

  607. and it is through Jesus.

  608. We mentioned it earlier,

  609. the beauty of God

  610. loving the world,

  611. the sinful and broken world

  612. in such a way

  613. that He made a way

  614. for people to be taken

  615. from death to life.

  616. This is a beautiful thing

  617. and we are reminded of this

  618. in so many different ways

  619. that Jesus made a way for us.

  620. But we can also lose sight of it

  621. and place that hope

  622. on other things.

  623. For example,

  624. oftentimes there's things

  625. that get in the way

  626. of us seeing it clearly.

  627. We think attendance will help.

  628. Well, let me tell you,

  629. you can be born into the church.

  630. You can be on the cradle roll

  631. from the moment

  632. that you came into this world.

  633. You can be dedicated to church.

  634. You can be baptized in the church.

  635. You can put a desk in the church

  636. and work every single day

  637. of your life in the church.

  638. You can get a bed

  639. and you can put it in a church.

  640. We've got some rooms available

  641. if you want to do that.

  642. We don't have a shower,

  643. but you can stay there if you want.

  644. You can do those things

  645. and you can spend

  646. every single night in the church,

  647. spend every single waking moment.

  648. And when you die,

  649. sometimes there's places

  650. where you can be buried

  651. right next to the church.

  652. But let me tell you,

  653. those things

  654. don't get you any closer to God.

  655. Those things will not save you.

  656. But no matter how close you are

  657. to religion,

  658. it will not bring you closer to God.

  659. There is only one substitute

  660. for your sin and my sin,

  661. and His name is Jesus.

  662. Whether we admit it or not,

  663. each of us are desperate.

  664. We are desperate for salvation.

  665. We are desperate for acceptance.

  666. We are desperate for meaning

  667. in this life.

  668. And deep down,

  669. we know that we're sinners

  670. and that we have this need.

  671. And oftentimes,

  672. we try over and over again

  673. to do things to save ourselves.

  674. We try over and over again

  675. to cover up this void inside of us

  676. because we don't like

  677. to feel this desperate.

  678. We don't like to feel

  679. like we don't have meaning.

  680. We don't like to feel like

  681. our lives aren't counting

  682. for something.

  683. And so we try to cover it up

  684. over and over again with things.

  685. We try to give our lives

  686. to things that will make

  687. ourselves feel better.

  688. And we think,

  689. if we can just do this,

  690. then my life will have meaning.

  691. My life will have purpose

  692. if I can just accomplish this.

  693. I've heard it said this way,

  694. that the loneliest moment in life

  695. is when you have just achieved

  696. that which you thought

  697. would deliver the ultimate,

  698. and it's let you down.

  699. The loneliest moment in life

  700. is when you've just achieved,

  701. when you've just gotten

  702. what you think is going to give

  703. your life meaning and purpose,

  704. and only to find out

  705. it's not enough.

  706. It's not enough.

  707. We are desperate.

  708. We are hopeless.

  709. And oftentimes,

  710. it is hard for us to understand

  711. this hopelessness

  712. that we face apart from Jesus.

  713. And what I like to do at times

  714. is to think of a real-life situation

  715. that seems to be hopeless

  716. so we can wrap our minds around this.

  717. You may have heard me share

  718. a story similar to this,

  719. or you may even remember this story

  720. from when it was on the news.

  721. This actually came from news

  722. about 16 years ago.

  723. Many of you will remember

  724. watching the news,

  725. and all of a sudden,

  726. the world's attention was in Chile.

  727. There were 33 miners

  728. who were trapped in a mine

  729. in the Atacama Desert in Chile.

  730. 33 miners that were trapped

  731. after the mine had collapsed,

  732. and nobody knew

  733. if they were alive or dead,

  734. and they were trapped

  735. underneath the desert,

  736. one of the driest deserts

  737. in the world,

  738. for 69 days.

  739. The first 17 days of that entrapment

  740. were without any contact

  741. to the outside world.

  742. They didn't know if people

  743. were going to find them.

  744. They heard the mine,

  745. they heard the drills

  746. going all around them,

  747. but nothing was coming

  748. to the place where they were,

  749. the cavern where they were trapped.

  750. Nothing was coming to them.

  751. For 17 days,

  752. they had no idea

  753. if people even knew

  754. they were alive or dead.

  755. And finally,

  756. on the 17th day,

  757. that drill bit makes its way

  758. into the cavern where they were,

  759. but yet again,

  760. they realized,

  761. this isn't big enough

  762. for us to get out.

  763. Now they just know

  764. that we're down here.

  765. And so for the next 52 days,

  766. they were completely dependent

  767. on the outside world

  768. to give them food,

  769. to give them water,

  770. to pump oxygen down to them.

  771. They were completely dependent

  772. on others to find a way

  773. to rescue them

  774. because they couldn't

  775. rescue themselves.

  776. And so finally,

  777. they were able to bore

  778. a big enough hole

  779. to lower a basket down

  780. and that one person

  781. could come up at a time.

  782. And so one person

  783. would get in this basket

  784. and squeeze in as tightly

  785. as they could

  786. and take the 30 minute ride

  787. it took to get 2,300 feet

  788. above where they were.

  789. 30 minutes

  790. as they're trapped in this

  791. where all they can see

  792. is rock around them,

  793. bringing that,

  794. they will make it

  795. to the surface.

  796. And this seems like

  797. a hopeless state to be in.

  798. That's one of the most

  799. hopeless points

  800. that you can imagine

  801. yourself being in.

  802. But here's the thing.

  803. If the Bible is true,

  804. and I believe that the Bible

  805. is true from cover to cover,

  806. if the Bible is true,

  807. then those 33 miners

  808. had a better chance

  809. of finding a spoon

  810. and clawing their way out

  811. 2,300 feet

  812. than you and I do

  813. of saving ourselves.

  814. They had a better chance

  815. of saving themselves

  816. out of 2,300 feet

  817. underneath rock

  818. in the driest place

  819. on earth.

  820. They had a better chance

  821. of saving themselves

  822. than you and I do

  823. of saving ours.

  824. You see,

  825. when we think about

  826. this hopeless state,

  827. we're reminded

  828. that we need Jesus.

  829. I've heard it said like this,

  830. there are only two kinds

  831. of religion in the world,

  832. the one that you carry

  833. and the one that carries you.

  834. One tries to tell you

  835. what you must do

  836. to make yourself

  837. acceptable to God

  838. and the other tells you

  839. what God has done

  840. to make you

  841. acceptable to Him.

  842. You see,

  843. our faith hinges

  844. on the good news

  845. of the gospel.

  846. That verse that Paul declares

  847. in 1 Corinthians 15,

  848. for I delivered to you

  849. of first importance

  850. what I also received

  851. that Christ died

  852. for our sins

  853. in accordance

  854. with the scriptures,

  855. that He was buried

  856. and that He was raised

  857. on the third day

  858. in accordance

  859. with the scriptures.

  860. You see,

  861. because the tomb

  862. is empty,

  863. because Jesus

  864. was resurrected,

  865. anything is possible.

  866. The resurrection

  867. tells us

  868. that Jesus

  869. has won.

  870. The resurrection

  871. tells us

  872. that Jesus

  873. has won.

  874. He is victorious

  875. over death,

  876. hell,

  877. and the grave.

  878. And if we place

  879. our trust in Him,

  880. His victory

  881. over death,

  882. hell,

  883. and the grave

  884. becomes our victory

  885. over death,

  886. hell,

  887. and the grave.

  888. Let us look

  889. to the cross.

  890. May we look

  891. to the cross

  892. and we see God's love

  893. as we look

  894. to the cross

  895. and believe

  896. the gospel message.

  897. If this is something

  898. that you need to do,

  899. today,

  900. to put your faith

  901. and your trust

  902. in Jesus,

  903. to look to the cross,

  904. to see God's love

  905. and believe the gospel,

  906. then let me encourage you

  907. to get that right today.

  908. What better day

  909. than Easter

  910. to give your life

  911. to Jesus

  912. and go from death

  913. to life.

  914. But the thing is,

  915. this isn't just something

  916. for new believers,

  917. for people

  918. who aren't Christians.

  919. This is something

  920. that we give

  921. our lives to.

  922. Maybe we need

  923. to look to the cross,

  924. see God's love,

  925. believe the gospel,

  926. and follow Him

  927. in believers' baptism.

  928. The great news today

  929. is in the 11 o'clock service,

  930. we have four baptisms.

  931. Three of the four

  932. are adult baptisms

  933. where they have

  934. gone through

  935. the rituals before.

  936. They've done

  937. the different things,

  938. but now they've given

  939. their life to Jesus

  940. and they want

  941. to get that order right.

  942. They want it to be

  943. believer's baptism

  944. where they've given

  945. their life to Jesus

  946. and they're following

  947. in obedience

  948. to what He's called

  949. them to do.

  950. Maybe for you today,

  951. this seeing the cross,

  952. this looking to the cross,

  953. seeing God's love,

  954. and believing the gospel

  955. is following

  956. in obedience there.

  957. But this is also

  958. a message

  959. for every single person.

  960. May we every day

  961. look to the cross,

  962. see God's love,

  963. believe this gospel,

  964. and live a transformed life.

  965. Because if we claim

  966. to enter into

  967. a life-changing relationship

  968. with a King of kings

  969. and Lord of lords,

  970. then our lives

  971. are going to look different.

  972. And may we see that clearly.

  973. May we come to this passage,

  974. a very familiar passage.

  975. May we look,

  976. may we see,

  977. may we believe.

  978. Father, thank You so very much

  979. for who You are

  980. and all that You do for us.

  981. Lord, we thank You

  982. for the cross.

  983. We thank You

  984. that You took our sin

  985. and our shame

  986. and our regret

  987. on Yourself

  988. and You gave us

  989. new life.

  990. But Lord,

  991. today we also thank You

  992. for the victory.

  993. Lord, we are grateful

  994. that You lived

  995. the perfect life,

  996. made the ultimate sacrifice,

  997. and because of who You are,

  998. it was not possible

  999. for You to be held down

  1000. by death.

  1001. And Lord,

  1002. that's a truth

1003. that we hold on to,

  1004. that we cling to,

  1005. that because we give

  1006. our life to You,

1007. just like it was not possible

  1008. for death

  1009. to hold You down,

1010. it is no longer possible

  1011. for death

1012. to have the final say

  1013. in our life.

  1014. So Lord,

  1015. may we,

1016. may we look to the cross.

  1017. May we see

  1018. Your love

  1019. and believe

  1020. this gospel message.

  1021. We ask all this

  1022. in Jesus' precious name.

  1023. Amen.

1024. We're going to invite you

  1025. to stand.

  1026. We're going to sing

  1027. a song of invitation.

1028. And if God is speaking

  1029. to you this morning,

  1030. won't you respond

1031. in a way that brings

  1032. His name,

  1033. honor,

  1034. and glory?
