  1. In case you haven't picked up on this, as we've been looking through the book of Hebrews, Hebrews is probably, I'll go ahead and say it is the most Old Testament book of the New Testament.

  2. It refers back to many people in the Old Testament. It refers back to the temple, to the sacrificial system, the promises made by God. It has large portions of the Old Testament quoted right there in it.

  3. In fact, half of chapter 8 is essentially a quotation of Jeremiah 31 that Sean read for us earlier.

  4. So many things that are happening in the book of Hebrews are a continuation of the Old Testament, of looking at it like that.

  5. But at the same time, the book of Hebrews explains something new in greater detail than most of the places in the New Testament as well.

  6. It explains in great detail this new covenant.

  7. Now, I want us to be careful as we look at this today.

  8. In no way, shape, or form are we suggesting that we do away with the Old Testament or unhitching ourselves from it or whatever you may say.

  9. But to do so would not only be irresponsible, it would be unlike Christ.

  10. Because if you remember from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said,

  11. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets.

  12. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.

  13. And so as we mentioned at the beginning of our study of the book of Hebrews,

  14. as we think about the Old Testament and the New Testament, we see it much like a two-act play.

  15. You have Act 1 and you have Act 2.

  16. The Old Testament is Act 1.

  17. New Testament is Act 2.

  18. And if you only have the Old Testament, you have the beginning of the story without the resolution.

  19. If you only have the New Testament, you have the resolution without the setup, without understanding where this is going.

  20. And so if you go to see a play and you leave before the final act, you're probably going to be pretty disappointed.

  21. In fact, you can't give a review on the play if you don't see the whole thing.

  22. You can't say, oh, well, this is a bad play or a good play if you don't see the whole thing.

  23. Because it helps to make the whole play make sense when we see it together.

  24. Not because there's anything wrong with the first few Acts, but because the play wasn't finished.

  25. And so we have to see it as a whole.

  26. Michael Kruger, reflecting on the Old Testament, he describes it this way.

  27. He says, it is a single coherent story that ends on a cliffhanger.

  28. A story that needs an ending.

  29. God spoke to his people.

  30. And the cliffhanger is that he promised to send a redeemer for them.

  31. And when Jesus came, he resolved that cliffhanger.

  32. Cliffhanger.

  33. Alistair Begg.

  34. And I have to make sure that I enunciate this.

  35. Because Clay, last time I said Alistair Begg, he thought I said Alex Trebek.

  36. And so it is not Alex Trebek.

  37. But Alistair Begg, he was making a statement recalling his Sunday school teacher when he was growing up.

  38. How his Sunday school teacher explained the metanarrative of scripture, the continuation of scripture to him as he was growing up.

  39. Now, before I get into this explanation, I just want to take this as an encouragement.

  40. To you Sunday school teachers, to you parents who are training up your kids, what you tell your kids matters.

  41. What our Sunday school teachers are teaching them matters because they listen.

  42. And so this great preacher who has become incredibly influential over his life, who has PhDs, who is able to explain scripture in great detail in many ways,

  43. he still refers back to what his childhood Sunday school teacher told him about how to understand the story of scripture.

  44. And so he explains it this way.

  45. He says, if you want to see the kind of the picture of the whole story, as you think of it like this.

  46. He says, you think of it as the Old Testament.

  47. In the Old Testament, Jesus is predicted.

  48. In the Gospels, Jesus is revealed.

  49. In the Acts, Jesus is preached.

  50. In the epistles, which Hebrews falls under, Jesus is explained.

  51. And then in Revelation, Jesus is expected.

  52. And so you have Jesus predicted.

  53. You have Jesus revealed.

  54. You have Jesus preached.

  55. You have Jesus explained.

  56. And you have Jesus expected.

  57. You see, the Bible is not a series of disconnected stories.

  58. It is one story that has Jesus at the center from beginning to end.

  59. And our passage today helps highlight this in great detail.

  60. And so if you have a copy of God's Word, I want you to invite you to open with me to Hebrews chapter 8.

    Hebrews 8 chapter mention

  61. And we're going to read all of chapter 8, the 13 verses here in chapter 8.

  62. It says this.

  63. Now the point in what we are saying is this.

  64. We have such a high priest.

  65. One who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the majesty in heaven.

  66. A minister in the holy places.

  67. In the true tent that the Lord set up.

  68. Not man.

  69. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices.

  70. Thus, it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer.

  71. Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all.

  72. Since the priests who offer gifts according to the law, they serve a copy and a shadow of the heavenly things.

  73. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God saying,

  74. See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown to you on the mountain.

  75. But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is much more excellent than the old.

  76. As the covenant he mediates is better since it is enacted on better promises.

  77. For if the first covenant had been faultless, there would not have been, there have been no occasion to look for a second.

  78. For he finds fault with them when he says,

  79. Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel.

  80. And with the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt.

  81. For they did not continue in my covenant, and I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.

  82. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord.

  83. I will put my laws into their minds and write them on their hearts.

  84. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

  85. And they shall not teach each one his neighbor and each other his brother, saying,

  86. Know the Lord, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.

  87. For I was merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.

  88. In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete.

  89. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

  90. And so from this passage, there are two truths and a great promise that I want us to bring our attention to today.

  91. Two truths and a great promise.

  92. To begin with, I want us to clearly see that we have a better high priest.

  93. We have a better high priest.

  94. Last week, the author showed us in great detail that Jesus is a high priest after a different order.

  95. He's a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

  96. And as a high priest after the order of Melchizedek, he is both a priest and a king.

  97. That was the point of what we were sharing last week.

  98. And this week, he begins to explain what he means by that.

  99. He begins to explain this, and he does so in great detail in the first five verses.

  100. But I want us to read those first two again, just to bring our attention back to this.

  101. So after he's talked about who Melchizedek is and how Jesus is a high priest after this order,

  102. he says,

  103. And it tells us he's appointed to this.

  104. You see, this passage gives us at least a couple of reasons why Jesus is better.

  105. Why he is a better high priest.

  106. And to begin with, we see that Jesus makes a better offering.

  107. Verse 3 tells us that Jesus is a better high priest because he offers a better offering.

  108. His sacrifice, the sacrifice that he gave his life for to pay our sin debt,

  109. Jesus, we are told, is appointed to this role.

  110. He's appointed to this role as a high priest.

  111. Now, kids, I want you to answer a question for me today.

  112. This is for the kids.

  113. This isn't for the adults.

  114. So, kids, think about it this way.

  115. Okay, if a person is appointed to the position of a firefighter or a fireman,

  116. what would you expect them to do?

  117. Okay, maybe we do need some adult help.

  118. Fight fires.

  119. Yes, exactly.

  120. You would expect them to fight fires.

  121. If someone is appointed to the position or role of a police officer,

  122. what would you expect them to do?

  123. You would expect them to keep us safe.

  124. If someone was appointed to the role of a second grade teacher,

  125. you would expect them to teach children how to read, how to write,

  126. how to do those things to set them up for success.

  127. And so, when the author says that Jesus was appointed to the role of high priest,

  128. it would have triggered something in the reader's minds.

  129. It would have triggered for them that Jesus is appointed for the purpose of making a sacrifice.

  130. And this is exactly what he did.

  131. Except his sacrifice was better than the Levitical priesthood sacrifice.

  132. Remember, he's after a different order.

  133. He's after the order of Melchizedek.

  134. And so, his sacrifice is better because his sacrifice was lasting.

  135. Because he laid down his own life for this sacrifice,

  136. making this sacrifice final and complete.

  137. So, I want you to put yourself into the shoes of these first century Jewish Christians

  138. that would have heard these words.

  139. What this is saying is that Jesus has achieved

  140. what all of Israel have been longing for throughout the generations.

  141. The real, full, and final forgiveness of sins.

  142. And it's really easy for us to miss this in our reading today

  143. if we don't have an understanding of how Act 1 paints the picture for Act 2.

  144. If we don't understand how the Old Testament is paving the way for this,

  145. it's really easy to miss this part where it says that Jesus

  146. is seated at the right hand of the throne of the majesty in heaven.

  147. You see, in the Old Testament, while the priests were doing their work,

  148. when they were doing things,

  149. they never completed their work.

  150. They never sat down.

  151. In fact, when you look at all the furnishings

  152. that were to be put into the tabernacle and into the temple,

  153. you had all of these great things that were supposed to go into the temple,

  154. into the tabernacle.

  155. You had these lamp sands.

  156. You had these basins that were all made out of fine metals

  157. and precious gold and different things.

  158. You had different furnishings.

  159. You had altars.

  160. You had the Ark of the Covenant.

  161. You had curtains.

  162. You had all of these things that were meticulously laid out

  163. that were supposed to be in the tabernacle and the tent.

  164. But there was something that wasn't mentioned that wasn't in there.

  165. There's something that isn't mentioned because it wasn't supposed to be in there.

  166. And that's a chair for the high priest to have a seat in.

  167. And it was intentional that this isn't in there

  168. because in the Old Testament, the work of the high priest is never done.

  169. It's never complete.

  170. There's no need to put a chair in there because they can't sit down

  171. because they're always working.

  172. They're always trying to figure out, to try to follow the pattern,

  173. to pay for these sins.

  174. Because their work was never done.

  175. Peter O'Brien notes, he says,

  176. that Christ sat down as a priest

  177. after his work of making purification for sins

  178. shows that his work was finished.

  179. Do you know what finished means?

  180. It means it's done.

  181. It means it's complete.

  182. The atonement for sin is done and it is complete.

  183. If something is finished, that means there's nothing you and I can do

  184. to add to it or to take away from it.

  185. If you are saved, then your sins, past, present, and future,

  186. are paid for because Jesus' work is finished.

  187. Jesus makes a better offering.

  188. But what we also see in this passage

  189. is that he's a better high priest

  190. because he serves in a better place.

  191. Verses 1 and 2 tell us

  192. that Jesus is seated at the right hand

  193. of the throne of majesty in heaven.

  194. A minister in the holy places,

  195. in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man.

  196. See, one of the ways that we see

  197. that we have a better high priest

  198. is because Jesus serves from a better place.

  199. He serves from a better place,

  200. from heaven in the true tent.

  201. Some of your translations right here

  202. may use the word tabernacle instead of tent.

  203. And I actually kind of like that translation

  204. a little better here.

  205. But on a very basic level,

  206. tabernacle is the same as tent.

  207. But more specifically,

  208. tabernacle refers to the tent

  209. where God met with his people

  210. after the exodus from Egypt.

  211. You see, the people needed a tabernacle

  212. or they needed a tent

  213. because they were wandering around

  214. in the wilderness.

  215. And the tabernacle provided a mobile place

  216. to meet with God.

  217. But Hebrews tells us

  218. that Christ fulfills his ministry

  219. in a tabernacle that the Lord set up.

  220. It's not a tent on earth.

  221. It's a superior tabernacle in heaven.

  222. The tabernacle on earth was real,

  223. but it wasn't the place

  224. where salvation was finalized,

  225. was finished, was won.

  226. Full salvation takes place

  227. in the true tabernacle in heaven.

  228. Man does not make this tabernacle,

  229. only the Lord does.

  230. You see, the original is always better

  231. than the substitute.

  232. The real thing is better than a shadow

  233. as it describes it here.

  234. The original is always better

  235. than the substitute.

  236. As I was thinking about this week,

  237. I was reminded of two vacations

  238. that I went on when I was growing up.

  239. I can remember the first vacation

  240. that really just stands out to me

  241. and really made a big impact in my life

  242. and probably was one of my favorite vacations

  243. ever growing up

  244. was when I was in sixth or seventh grade,

  245. our family went to Yellowstone National Park.

  246. And we saw some different things around there,

  247. but we went to Yellowstone National Park

  248. and I just remember

  249. it was an eye-opening experience.

  250. Because we get there

  251. and all of a sudden I'm seeing mountains

  252. bigger than any mountains

  253. that I've ever seen before.

  254. I'm seeing wildlife

  255. that you don't have around here.

  256. I'm seeing all kinds of things.

  257. I'm seeing lakes that are so big

  258. that you can barely see to the other side.

  259. Canyons, you're seeing these geysers

  260. that erupt almost like clockwork.

  261. And so it was just this amazing thing

  262. and it really began,

  263. my love for Yellowstone began there

  264. and really was one of the reasons

  265. that I wanted to go back

  266. when I was in college

  267. to serve with Baptist Collegiate Ministries

  268. as a missionary in Yellowstone.

  269. And so all of those things

  270. were impactful about that.

  271. But one of the things

  272. that I remember from that

  273. is one of the places that we stayed.

  274. We stayed in the Old Faithful Inn.

  275. Anybody ever been to the Old Faithful Inn?

  276. Okay, a handful of you in here

  277. have been to the Old Faithful Inn.

  278. It's amazing.

  279. It was built around 1900 or so.

  280. And so it's a very old lodge,

  281. a very old inn.

  282. And so it was made

  283. with a lot of the trees

  284. that were from the air,

  285. these lodgepole pines

  286. and it has exposed beams everywhere.

  287. You walk into this foyer

  288. that you just see

  289. multiple levels going up.

  290. And so as soon as you walk in,

  291. your eyes immediately

  292. start looking at me like,

  293. wow, this place is massive.

  294. It's huge.

  295. And each floor that it goes up,

  296. it has an area there

  297. where you can,

  298. a little lobby on each floor

  299. where you can go out at night,

  300. enjoy cookies,

  301. enjoy somebody playing on a piano

  302. that just fills up the whole lobby

  303. of this giant inn.

  304. And it's really,

  305. it's something that you should look up sometimes.

  306. If you've never seen it,

  307. you should look it up.

  308. Now, not right now.

  309. Don't get your phone out now.

  310. But later,

  311. look it up and see this

  312. because it really is an amazing thing.

  313. They have this observation deck

  314. where you can go out

  315. and look at Old Faithful

  316. as it erupts on the hour almost.

  317. And so it's an amazing place.

  318. It truly is an amazing building.

  319. It is beautiful and elegant

  320. and rustic all at the same time.

  321. But the other vacation

  322. that I can remember very well

  323. was a year or two after this vacation.

  324. And it was when our family

  325. went to Disney World.

  326. I think I was in the eighth grade or so.

  327. And we stayed at the Wilderness Lodge.

  328. Anybody ever seen Wilderness Lodge?

  329. Okay, a few more of you

  330. have seen the Wilderness Lodge than this.

  331. Some of you may have stayed there,

  332. but it was a really beautiful, nice hotel.

  333. But much of it seems to be based

  334. on the Old Faithful Inn.

  335. And so that was something

  336. we noticed immediately

  337. as we walked in.

  338. Like so much of this,

  339. it seems to be based

  340. on the Old Faithful Inn.

  341. It was a nice place.

  342. We enjoyed our stay.

  343. It had a great pool.

  344. But the whole time,

  345. we kept comparing the Wilderness Lodge

  346. to the Old Faithful Inn.

  347. We kept saying,

  348. well, this is great,

  349. but remember the Old Faithful Inn.

  350. You know, this is really neat

  351. that they're trying to make it look like this,

  352. but remember the Old Faithful Inn.

  353. And because as nice as the copy was,

  354. it was not as impressive as the original.

  355. What the author is telling us here

  356. is that Jesus is mediating,

  357. he's ministering from heaven

  358. in a far superior place.

  359. Using the language of the author,

  360. he's not ministering from a copy

  361. or a shadow,

  362. but he's ministering from the real thing.

  363. You see, we may run the risk

  364. of thinking that because Jesus

  365. ascended to heaven,

  366. that he left earth,

  367. that he is somehow less effective

  368. because he is in heaven

  369. and not on earth.

  370. What the author is communicating here,

  371. what the author is telling us

  372. is that nothing could be further

  373. from the truth.

  374. He is more effective

  375. because he is ministering

  376. from a far superior place.

  377. He lives to make intercession

  378. for us forever.

  379. He's ministering from the original,

  380. not a copy, not a shadow,

  381. but from the real thing.

  382. So we see a better sacrifice.

  383. We see he's serving

  384. from a better place.

  385. And hopefully we can clearly see

  386. that we have a better high priest,

  387. which leads us to understanding

  388. this next truth.

  389. We have a better covenant.

  390. We have a better covenant.

  391. We get this from verses 6 through 13,

  392. where it says,

  393. but as it is,

  394. Christ has obtained a ministry

  395. that is far more excellent

  396. than the old

  397. as the covenant he mediates

  398. is better,

  399. since it is enacted

  400. on a better promise.

  401. For if that first covenant

  402. had been faultless,

  403. there would have been no occasion

  404. to look for a second.

  405. Then in verses 8 through 12,

  406. the author quotes Jeremiah 31,

  407. highlighting the need

  408. and promise of a new covenant,

  409. followed by verse 13

  410. that says this,

  411. In speaking of a new covenant,

  412. he makes the first one obsolete.

  413. And what is becoming obsolete

  414. and growing old

  415. is ready to vanish away.

  416. Now, as we begin our discussion

  417. of this better covenant,

  418. I believe Kruger provides

  419. some helpful guardrails for us

  420. as we think about this

  421. and making this comparison

  422. between the old

  423. and the new covenants.

  424. He says,

  425. As we enter into this comparison

  426. between the old and new covenants,

  427. we need to begin by remembering

  428. the contrast between them

  429. is not absolute.

  430. We must be careful

  431. not to overstate the differences

  432. in a way that caricatures

  433. the old covenant

  434. as harsh, cold, legalistic,

  435. and only concerned with externals,

  436. nor should we present

  437. the new covenant

  438. as unconcerned with the law

  439. or with obedience.

  440. As we shall see,

  441. the differences between the covenants

  442. are often a matter of degree.

  443. And so with this in mind,

  444. let's look at some of these differences.

  445. You see, Christ's work allows us

  446. to directly and confidently

  447. enjoy God's presence.

  448. We no longer have to come before God

  449. in a tabernacle made by human hands

  450. because Christ has fulfilled

  451. the tabernacle's purpose.

  452. We can draw near to the very throne of God

  453. and we can do this boldly and confidently

  454. knowing that Christ,

  455. our great high priest,

  456. has made a way for us.

  457. We can do this boldly.

  458. Al Mohler, he says,

  459. this great truth permeates

  460. the pages of the Old Testament.

  461. The king who ransoms his people

  462. from their iniquities

  463. and brings them to peace with God

  464. has ushered in the new covenant

  465. by his blood.

  466. And the old covenant

  467. is of far greater excellence

  468. than the first.

  469. And so in this passage,

  470. it tells us the old covenant

  471. had a fault.

  472. Now, when he says it had a fault,

  473. don't think of it like a machine

  474. having a fault.

  475. Or your computer showing up

  476. with this error message

  477. that something went wrong with it.

  478. Or your check engine light

  479. coming on your car

  480. and you're needing to take it

  481. into a mechanic for a repair.

  482. Don't think of it as a fault like that.

  483. But its faultiness

  484. was rooted in its incompleteness.

  485. Its faultiness

  486. was rooted in its incompleteness.

  487. The old covenant was faulty

  488. because it was not final.

  489. If it were the final covenant,

  490. there would have been no need

  491. for a better covenant

  492. that is talked about here.

  493. You see, the new covenant is better

  494. because it makes the full

  495. and final atonement for our sins.

  496. No longer an endless cycle

  497. that makes, and this is what makes

  498. Christ's statement on the cross

  499. all the more amazing.

  500. When he says, it is finished.

  501. When Christ says it is finished

  502. on the cross, he was announcing

  503. that the wrath of God

  504. toward the sin of his people

  505. was finally paid for in full.

  506. Never again would there need

  507. to be an animal sacrifice

  508. because Jesus paid it all.

  509. When you look at the Jeremiah passage quoted,

  510. there's a promise of a relationship here.

  511. A promise of not only forgiveness,

  512. but remembering the sin no more.

  513. What you see is a fulfillment

  514. of the promise the angels made

  515. of the shepherds at the birth of Jesus.

  516. You remember when the angels were there

  517. at the birth and announcing this birth,

  518. and they said,

  519. a heavenly host praising God

  520. and saying, glory to God in the highest

  521. and on earth, what?

  522. Peace.

  523. Peace among those with whom he is pleased.

  524. Peace among those with whom he is pleased.

  525. Ephesians 2 reminds us

  526. that because of sin,

  527. it's impossible to please God.

  528. In fact, we follow the ways of this world,

  529. the sons of disobedience,

  530. and we're by nature objects of wrath

  531. like the rest of mankind.

  532. There is a condition

  533. that we have no hope of peace

  534. outside of the only begotten son

  535. coming to the earth

  536. and accomplishing

  537. what we could never hope

  538. to accomplish on our own.

  539. But in the new covenant,

  540. we get to experience new peace.

  541. Peace that is final and complete.

  542. And what does all of this talk about?

  543. A better high priest

  544. and a better covenant

  545. actually change about our lives today.

  546. Well, this passage

  547. and especially the last couple of chapters

  548. that we've looked at

  549. in the book of Hebrews

  550. are some pretty difficult chapters

  551. to understand.

  552. In fact, if you're just trying to read through

  553. for completion the Bible,

  554. you might get to these passages

  555. and you're like, you know what?

  556. I don't really have time to think about this.

  557. I don't really have time

  558. to dive into what this means.

  559. And so I'm just going to read over this quickly

  560. and then get to some other places.

  561. But in doing so,

  562. we miss some great promises

  563. that we have in this.

  564. We miss some great truths

  565. that bring about this great promise.

  566. There are passages that are difficult,

  567. that are hard to study,

  568. but really what we are doing

  569. is we're growing

  570. in our understanding of the gospel in this.

  571. We're not growing past the gospel.

  572. We're not checking a box

  573. and going past this.

  574. We're growing deeper

  575. when we study this in a greater detail.

  576. In this passage,

  577. we are not growing past the gospel,

  578. but simply growing deeper into it.

  579. The more that we dive into it,

  580. the more we clearly see God.

  581. And what we must understand

  582. is the true knowledge of God

  583. always leads us to action.

  584. True knowledge and understanding of God

  585. is always going to lead us

  586. to serving Him in greater ways.

  587. And so it's my hope and prayer

  588. that these truths

  589. will help us to see this final promise,

  590. a promise that declares

  591. we have a better way

  592. of experiencing God.

  593. We have a better way

  594. of experiencing God.

  595. In other words,

  596. what does this new covenant

  597. change about us?

  598. This new covenant changes

  599. the way we approach God.

  600. To begin with,

  601. our better high priest

  602. and better covenant changes

  603. the way that we approach Scripture.

  604. We read the Bible

  605. as new covenant Christians,

  606. which means that we distinguish

  607. the Old Testament

  608. and our Scripture

  609. as our Scripture,

  610. but not as our covenant.

  611. All the Bible is true

  612. from Genesis to Revelation.

  613. All the Bible is our Scripture.

  614. All the Bible is profitable for us.

  615. All the Bible should be known,

  616. but the Old Covenant

  617. is not our covenant.

  618. The Old Testament is vital

  619. to understanding our new covenant.

  620. Act 2 cannot be understood

  621. without Act 1.

  622. We should read it.

  623. We should study it.

  624. We should memorize it.

  625. We should apply it.

  626. In fact, I would say that without it,

  627. it's impossible to understand

  628. the New Testament.

  629. But the Old Covenant

  630. is not our covenant.

  631. And so as we read the Bible

  632. as new covenant Christians,

  633. we take the commands of Christ

  634. as given to us.

  635. The final command that Christ gives

  636. before He ascends to heaven,

  637. the Great Commission of going

  638. and making disciples,

  639. this is for us.

  640. Piper uses this to help us

  641. to see another difference

  642. in these covenants.

  643. He says,

  644. the Old Testament was more

  645. come and see.

  646. The New Testament is go and tell.

  647. The Old Covenant at its core

  648. was ethnic and tribal.

  649. There were provisions for outsiders

  650. to come into the covenant,

  651. but by and large,

  652. it was something that you were born into.

  653. The New Covenant is not tribal

  654. and ethnically centered.

  655. You see, Jew is an ethnicity.

  656. Christian is not.

  657. It is not primarily

  658. a come and see religion.

  659. It is a go and tell religion.

  660. It is a personal relationship

  661. that you enter into.

  662. This is why we practice

  663. believer's baptism.

  664. It's not infant baptism

  665. because it's not a religion

  666. that you are born into.

  667. It's a relationship

  668. that you are reborn into.

  669. A relationship that has new birth,

  670. one that requires you

  671. to be born again.

  672. One of the,

  673. our better high priests

  674. and better covenant

  675. changed the way that we pray.

  676. When you look at the Lord's Prayer,

  677. or as I like to call it,

  678. the Disciples Prayer,

  679. Jesus begins this prayer

  680. in a radical way.

  681. Again, without knowing

  682. the Old Testament,

  683. this will be very easy to miss.

  684. But the prayer that Jesus

  685. teaches His disciples to pray,

  686. the model prayer

  687. that He models for them,

  688. saying you need to pray like this,

  689. He begins with a very bold statement.

  690. He says,

  691. when you pray,

  692. pray like this,

  693. Our Father,

  694. Our Father in Heaven,

  695. hallowed be Your name.

  696. By addressing God as Father,

  697. He gets everyone's attention.

  698. Kent Hughes made the observation,

  699. He says,

  700. You can search from Genesis to Malachi,

  701. and you will not find

  702. one individual speaking of God as Father.

  703. The New Covenant allows us

  704. to go from God's enemies

  705. to God's children.

  706. Pray as a New Covenant believer.

  707. Pray as addressing God as Father,

  708. and end by doing so in Jesus' name.

  709. Our better high priest

  710. and better covenant

  711. change our relationship

  712. with God and others.

  713. We now have a relationship with God,

  714. not an impersonal relationship

  715. of knowing that somewhere,

  716. somehow,

  717. there probably is a God,

  718. but we can actually have

  719. a relationship with this God.

  720. By placing our faith

  721. and our trust in Jesus,

  722. we can go from death to life.

  723. We can go from enemies

  724. to His children.

  725. We get to have a personal relationship

  726. with God.

  727. And so whether you are

  728. a believer or not,

  729. I hope and pray

  730. that all of this covenant talk

  731. that we've talked about this morning

  732. helps us to see

  733. the gift we have in Christ,

  734. to experience a relationship

  735. with God

  736. that because of Jesus

  737. is final

  738. and it is complete.

  739. Heavenly Father,

  740. I thank You so very much

  741. for Your Word.

  742. I thank You for what

  743. it teaches us about You.

  744. I thank You that we can

  745. look at it and study

  746. passages like this

  747. in the book of Hebrews

  748. that can be difficult

  749. to understand,

  750. that can be difficult

  751. to wrap our minds around,

  752. but Lord,

  753. what a privilege,

  754. what an incredible knowledge

  755. that we get

  756. when we take the time

  757. to dig into Your Word,

  758. to understand

  759. what You are communicating to us

  760. by understanding the Old Testament,

  761. by understanding this,

  762. it paves the way for us

  763. to be able to more clearly see

  764. who You are

  765. and what You've done for us.

  766. So Lord,

  767. I pray that today

  768. that we see You

  769. in greater ways,

  770. that we see You more clearly

  771. and by doing so

  772. that we trust You

  773. in a greater way.

  774. So Lord,

  775. I pray that there's someone

  776. here today

  777. that needs to know You

  778. as their Lord and Savior,

  779. that needs to go

  780. from death to life,

  781. that You would give them

  782. the boldness

  783. to step forward

  784. and say,

  785. God,

  786. I'm ready to follow You.

  787. I'm ready to place

  788. my faith and trust in You.

  789. I'm ready to stop trying

  790. to do this on my own,

  791. stop trying to do this cycle

  792. of doing enough good,

  793. being good enough

  794. to finally earn something,

  795. but realizing that I can't

  796. and that when You said

  797. on the cross,

  798. it is finished,

  799. that can be applied to me.

  800. And so Lord,

  801. I pray that there's someone

  802. that needs to experience

  803. Your saving grace.

  804. You would give them

  805. the boldness to do so today.

  806. But Lord,

  807. I pray that for the rest of us

  808. who have placed our faith

  809. and our trust in You,

  810. that we would see You

  811. more clearly,

  812. that we would see

  813. the gift You've given us

  814. to live as new covenant believers,

  815. understanding what You accomplished

  816. on the cross is final,

  817. it's complete,

  818. it's done.

  819. And so Lord,

  820. help us to live in light

  821. of that each and every day.

  822. And we ask all these things

  823. in Jesus' precious name.

  824. Amen.

  825. I'm going to invite you to stand.

  826. We're going to sing

  827. a song of invitation.

  828. The Lord is speaking this morning.

  829. And I want you to respond

  830. as we stand together and sing.

  831. Amen.
