  1. I do want to say again, Happy Mother's Day. Mother's Day is typically one of our best attended services of the year, second only to Easter.

  2. And I think this speaks volumes to the influence that mothers have in the lives of their children.

  3. I think it speaks volumes to the influence and the difference that they make.

  4. That the way they want to be celebrated is to have their kids with them at church.

  5. I am thankful for my mother and the way that she raised us and made sure that we were always in church.

  6. Wanted to make sure that we were always, always knew that we were prayed for.

  7. Always knew that we could have scripture cards that she would write out for us to memorize scripture.

  8. And never had to wonder if my mother was praying for me or not.

  9. Because she would tell me that she was praying for me.

  10. She would tell me that she was praying for me to make sure that I didn't do things that I shouldn't do.

  11. And then she told me one day that she also prayed that if I did do things I shouldn't do, that I would get caught.

  12. And it took me a little while to appreciate that.

  13. But now as a parent, I appreciate her desire for me to learn from those mistakes.

  14. But I'm also thankful for Catherine and the mother that she is to our kids.

  15. This week, I had the responsibility of getting all three of our kids ready for school on two different days all by myself.

  16. Now I know the moms in here are like, boo-hoo, you poor thing.

  17. But I did.

  18. I had to get the kids ready by myself for these two days.

  19. And if it had been the third day, we were going to my mom's to spend the night.

  20. And she was going to help me the next morning.

  21. But it reminded me of just how much that she does.

  22. And for 14 and a half years, every single Sunday, she gets all three of our kids ready.

  23. And make sure they're on church on time and time to greet.

  24. Some of my kids are the most eager greeters you've ever seen out there getting ready.

  25. But I am so thankful for her as well.

  26. But again, we are thankful for our mothers.

  27. And we're thankful for the difference that they make in our lives.

  28. And grateful that today is a day that we get to celebrate that and to honor that.

  29. And thankful for so many that are here today.

  30. And so, dads, I'm going to be honest.

  31. Moms have us beat when it comes to church attendance on our special days.

  32. And so, I want to encourage us in about a month from now by coming back and celebrating Father's Day as coming to church as well.

  33. Now, while today is a day of celebrating for many,

  34. we do recognize that few holidays have such an ability to have such high highs and low lows all at the same time.

  35. For many, Mother's Day is hard.

  36. It can be difficult because of a longing for children.

  37. Because you have lost a child.

  38. Because you aren't able to be with your children today.

  39. And maybe because you miss your mother.

  40. No matter what emotions we bring to Mother's Day, whether it be joy, grief, excitement, anticipation, or even disappointment,

  41. God knows our hearts and has promised to be with us no matter what we're going through.

  42. Bottom line, we're reminded over and over again on a daily basis how much we need Jesus.

  43. And how much a difference of a relationship with Him makes in our lives.

  44. So, in honor of this special day, we have a gift for all of the ladies in the room today.

  45. We want to make sure that every lady in the room today has something special to walk out with.

  46. You'll see up here in the front, we have a table here, table here, table in the back.

  47. Full of different books that we want to encourage you to grab on your way out.

  48. Now, kids, this is not a time to say, hey, I forgot to get Mom a present.

  49. Let me pick up.

  50. No, no, this is for all the ladies as you leave today.

  51. But we want you to grab one of those on your way out.

  52. Just let you know how excited we are and how thankful we are for you.

  53. This is something we want to go home with each of you.

  54. We are grateful for all of the ladies.

  55. So many of them in here not only have raised children,

  56. but so many of them have been mothers to so many in the church.

  57. That's the beauty of being a part of God's family.

  58. Not only do we have brothers and sisters in Christ that we get to share life with,

  59. but we have ladies who are in the church that may not be our mother,

  60. but have been a mother figure to us and have been a mentor.

  61. And so we're thankful and we want to celebrate everyone today.

  62. And so as we celebrate and honor our mothers,

  63. it's my fear that many mothers,

  64. they may not feel adequate or qualified to the task of raising their kids to love the Lord.

  65. As evidence of the commitments that the parents made earlier in our baby dedication,

  66. it's a big task.

  67. It's a tall task.

  68. It's one that we do not take lightly.

  69. But it is also my hope and prayer that today will be a time of encouragement for you

  70. to realize that you are exactly what your kids need.

  71. They don't need perfection.

  72. They don't need someone who has the perfect answer to all their questions.

  73. They don't need someone who never loses their temper.

  74. They need you.

  75. They need parents who love them enough to show them that Jesus is their greatest treasure.

  76. You see, our kids need real life examples to follow.

  77. So much of the things that we think disqualify us from being good parents

  78. or the parents that God has called us to be,

  79. such as struggles with anxiety, depression, anger, temper,

  80. all of these things are real life.

  81. And probably at least from a purely statistical standpoint,

  82. are things that many of our kids will struggle with one day as well.

  83. And so they don't need perfection.

  84. They need us looking to Jesus as the source of our strength.

  85. They need us dependent on Jesus.

  86. And so as we look at our passage of Scripture today,

  87. which is found in Hebrews chapter 9,

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  88. I believe that our passage helps us to see Jesus more clearly.

  89. And as we see him more and more for who he actually is,

  90. then our affection for and love for him grows as well.

  91. So if what our kids need most from us,

  92. and if what the world around us needs most from believers,

  93. is believers who actually love Jesus,

  94. then let's take a look and some time this morning

  95. and let our knowledge of and affection for Jesus grow.

  96. And so if you have a copy of God's Word,

  97. I want to invite you to follow along as we read Hebrews chapter 9,

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  98. starting in verse 1 going through verse 14.

  99. This is what the Word of the Lord says.

  100. It says,

  101. Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship

  102. and an earthly place of holiness.

  103. For a tent was prepared,

  104. the first section in which were the lampstand

  105. and the table and the bread of presence,

  106. and it was called the holy place.

  107. Behind the second curtain was a second section

  108. called the most holy place.

  109. Having the golden altar of incense

  110. and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold,

  111. in which was a golden urn holding the manna

  112. and Aaron's staff that budded

  113. and the tablets of the covenant.

  114. Above it were the cherubim of the glory

  115. overshadowing the mercy seat.

  116. Of these things we cannot speak in detail.

  117. These preparations, having thus been made,

  118. the priests go regularly into the first section,

  119. performing their ritual duties,

  120. but into the second only the high priest goes,

  121. and he but once a year,

  122. and not without taking blood,

  123. which he offers for himself

  124. and for the unintentional sins of the people.

  125. By this, the Holy Spirit indicates

  126. that the way into the holy places

  127. is not yet opened

  128. as long as the first section is still standing,

  129. which is symbolic for the present age.

  130. According to this arrangement,

  131. gifts and sacrifices are offered

  132. that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper,

  133. but deal only with food and drink

  134. and various washings,

  135. regulations for the body imposed

  136. until the time of reformation.

  137. But when Christ appeared

  138. as a high priest

  139. of the good things that have come,

  140. then through the greater and more perfect tent,

  141. not made with hands,

  142. that is, not of this creation,

  143. he entered once for all

  144. into the holy place,

  145. not by means of the blood of goats and calves,

  146. but by means of his own blood,

  147. thus securing an eternal redemption.

  148. For if the blood of goats and bulls

  149. and the sprinkling of defiled persons

  150. with the ashes of a heifer

  151. sanctify for the purification of the flesh,

  152. how much more will the blood of Christ,

  153. who through the eternal spirit

  154. offered himself without blemish to God,

  155. purify our conscience from dead works

  156. to serve the living God?

  157. Now, I believe that the author

  158. is trying to communicate a few things

  159. to us in this passage.

  160. I believe he's very much wanting us

  161. to see that God is holy

  162. and because of our sin,

  163. the only way into his presence is Jesus.

  164. He's wanting us to very clearly see

  165. the holiness of God

  166. and because of our sin,

  167. we can't enter into his presence,

  168. but only by the blood of Christ can we come.

  169. And so what I hope

  170. that we're able to see from the text today

  171. is that God is more holy than we can imagine.

  172. And because of Jesus,

  173. not only can we have a relationship with him,

  174. but we can also serve him.

  175. And so the first thing

  176. that I want to bring our attention to is this,

  177. that is the holiness of God.

  178. I want us to clearly see

  179. the holiness of God in this passage.

  180. Look at verse one in chapter nine again.

  181. It says,

  182. now even the first covenant

  183. had regulations for worship

  184. in an earthly place of holiness.

  185. Now, is that not the biggest understatement

  186. you've ever heard?

  187. That the first covenant

  188. had regulations for worship.

  189. If you've ever read through the Old Testament,

  190. you will see that there are many regulations

  191. for worship.

  192. There are many things

  193. that they're supposed to be doing

  194. as they come together

  195. that the priests are doing.

  196. So he says,

  197. as we see in the first covenant,

  198. there are regulations for worship.

  199. And the author begins helping us

  200. see the holiness

  201. by showing us

  202. how the Old Covenant worked

  203. by giving us some details

  204. of the layout and furnishings

  205. that were in the tabernacle.

  206. And then in verse five,

  207. it says,

  208. of these things,

  209. we cannot speak in detail.

  210. And indeed,

  211. there was no real need

  212. to discuss them in detail

  213. because his Jewish readers

  214. were well acquainted

  215. with the wilderness tabernacle.

  216. They understood

  217. what the regulations were.

  218. They understood

  219. all of the furnishings

  220. that were in the temple.

  221. They understood

  222. all of those things.

  223. But for our purposes today,

  224. we may not be as well versed

  225. in our knowledge

  226. of the tabernacle.

  227. So I want us to briefly

  228. take a look at some of those things.

  229. The author describes

  230. two sections of the tabernacle.

  231. He talks about the holy place

  232. and then the most holy place

  233. or the holy of holies.

  234. And in this passage right here,

  235. he tells us a few of those things

  236. that are in the holy place

  237. in that first section.

  238. He tells us there's a lamp stand there.

  239. He tells us about the bread that is there

  240. and the lamp stands.

  241. They were constantly,

  242. one of the jobs of the priest

  243. was to constantly make sure

  244. that there was plenty of oil

  245. in the lamps.

  246. One of their biggest things

  247. was to make sure

  248. that the lamps never went out.

  249. To make sure they constantly

  250. had oil in there

  251. so they would never go out

  252. in the night.

  253. There would constantly be light

  254. in the temple there.

  255. But they also had the responsibility

  256. of making sure

  257. there was bread there.

  258. It's called the bread of presents.

  259. And what that was

  260. was there was 12 loaves of bread

  261. representative of the 12 tribes of Israel.

  262. And they were to put this

  263. in the,

  264. on the table there.

  265. And it was something

  266. that was replaced

  267. every single week

  268. to make sure

  269. there was fresh bread there.

  270. And so the priest

  271. would replace the bread

  272. and we're told

  273. that they would consume

  274. the bread

  275. that was taken away.

  276. And so we see this

  277. taking place,

  278. but it's also something

  279. that we see

  280. they had to do

  281. over and over again.

  282. They were constantly doing this,

  283. but it was also

  284. pointing us towards Jesus.

  285. You see,

  286. all of those things

  287. in the temple

  288. were reminding us of Jesus.

  289. Even the lamps

  290. and the bread.

  291. Jesus describes himself

  292. as the light of the world

  293. and the bread of life.

  294. And so we're seeing this

  295. as a picture here.

  296. But we also,

  297. in verses 6 through 10,

  298. it gives us greater detail

  299. as to what happened there.

  300. The priests spent a lot of time

  301. in this outer section

  302. in the holy place.

  303. They spent a lot of time there.

  304. They were constantly making sure,

  305. like we said,

  306. that the oil was in the lamp,

  307. that the bread was replaced.

  308. But it also tells us

  309. that they were constantly

  310. performing their ritual duties.

  311. And that is,

  312. they were making

  313. and bringing sacrifices.

  314. And it says

  315. that they did this regularly.

  316. Or a better translation

  317. is probably repeatedly.

  318. Some of your translations

  319. may use repeatedly there.

  320. And this is giving us

  321. a picture

  322. of doing this process

  323. over and over

  324. and over again.

  325. They had to do this

  326. because the problem of sin

  327. was never solved.

  328. You see,

  329. in verse 9,

  330. it tells us

  331. why these sacrifices

  332. didn't solve

  333. the problem of sin.

  334. It says,

  335. because they cannot perfect

  336. the conscience

  337. of the worshiper.

  338. Why?

  339. Because they were

  340. only ever provisional.

  341. They were only ever done

  342. temporarily.

  343. In fact,

  344. as soon as

  345. these sacrifices were made,

  346. as soon as

  347. the day of atonement

  348. was over,

  349. then immediately

  350. they began sinning again.

  351. And it was something

  352. that had to go

  353. over and over again.

  354. And it was a process

  355. that reminded them

  356. of the holiness of God.

  357. But it also tells us

  358. about the second section,

  359. the most holy place

  360. or the holy of holies.

  361. And it begins so

  362. by telling us

  363. that it was behind a curtain.

  364. Now,

  365. when you hear curtain,

  366. I don't want you to think

  367. of the window treatments

  368. that you have in your house.

  369. I don't want you to think

  370. of those little window treatments

  371. that you can see through

  372. and that are really small

  373. and thin.

  374. Or if you have some nice ones,

  375. they may be blackout curtains.

  376. No.

  377. Think of something

  378. much bigger than this.

  379. We're told that

  380. in the temple

  381. that this curtain

  382. would have been

  383. around 60 feet high

  384. and 30 feet wide.

  385. Now,

  386. that's not even

  387. the most impressive part.

  388. To me,

  389. what is most impressive

  390. is how thick

  391. this curtain was.

  392. It said it was

  393. the width of a hand,

  394. so about four inches thick

  395. was this curtain.

  396. Now,

  397. some of you,

  398. for some reason,

  399. I don't know why,

  400. like to sleep

  401. with a weighted blanket.

  402. Catherine liked to do that

  403. for some time,

  404. this big,

  405. thick,

  406. heavy blanket.

  407. A weighted blanket

  408. has nothing

  409. on this curtain.

  410. This thing's

  411. 60 feet tall,

  412. 30 feet wide,

  413. four inches thick.

  414. It would have been

  415. incredibly heavy,

  416. but it was put in place

  417. to do a couple things.

  418. One,

  419. to make sure

  420. that people didn't go in there,

  421. but also

  422. to make sure

  423. the priest

  424. didn't go in

  425. to the holy of holies

  426. or the most holy place.

  427. We are told

  428. that the inner chamber

  429. held the altar of incense

  430. and the Ark of the Covenant,

  431. which was covered

  432. on all sides

  433. with gold.

  434. And in some ways,

  435. this Ark

  436. was a way

  437. of remembering.

  438. It was a way

  439. of remembering

  440. what God

  441. had done for them

  442. because inside the Ark,

  443. it contained

  444. Aaron's staff.

  445. It contained manna

  446. that God provided

  447. for them in the wilderness

  448. and it also contained

  449. the Ten Commandments.

  450. And so,

  451. this was all

  452. inside the Ark

  453. and so it was a way

  454. of reminding them

  455. of what God

  456. had done

  457. for them.

  458. and now,

  459. while it was significant

  460. what was in it,

  461. what was really significant

  462. about the Ark

  463. of the Covenant

  464. was what it represented,

  465. the mercy seat.

  466. And so,

  467. it talks about

  468. in detail

  469. how the top of it was

  470. and how it was

  471. representative

  472. of the mercy seat.

  473. And so,

  474. in order for the high priest

  475. to go into the temple here,

  476. it would have been

  477. very significant.

  478. This was a picture

  479. of God's throne.

  480. throne.

  481. The mercy seat

  482. would be represented

  483. there as a picture

  484. of God's throne.

  485. And Michael Kruger notes,

  486. he says,

  487. if as the high priest

  488. you had entered

  489. into the inner chamber,

  490. he says,

  491. you would have drawn

  492. back the curtain

  493. with a trembling hand,

  494. wondering whether

  495. you would come out alive.

  496. It would have been

  497. terrifying.

  498. But as scary

  499. as that was,

  500. it was only ever

  501. a symbol

  502. of what God's

  503. real throne room

  504. was like.

  505. Of God's real throne.

  506. Remember the vision

  507. in Isaiah chapter 6

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  508. where Isaiah comes

  509. to the real throne room.

  510. He says,

  511. in the year

  512. that King Uzziah died,

  513. I saw the Lord

  514. sitting upon a throne,

  515. high and lifted up.

  516. The train of his robe

  517. filled the temple.

  518. Above him

  519. stood the seraphim.

  520. Each had six wings.

  521. With two

  522. he covered his face

  523. and with two

  524. he covered his feet

  525. and with two

  526. he flew.

  527. And one called

  528. to another

  529. and said,

  530. holy, holy, holy

  531. is the Lord of hosts.

  532. The whole earth

  533. is filled

  534. full of his glory.

  535. And the foundations

  536. of the threshold

  537. shook

  538. at the voice

  539. of him

  540. who called.

  541. And the house

  542. was filled with smoke

  543. and I said,

  544. woe is me

  545. for I am lost

  546. for I am a man

  547. of unclean lips

  548. and I dwell amongst

  549. the people

  550. of unclean lips.

  551. for my eyes

  552. have seen

  553. the King

  554. the Lord

  555. of hosts.

  556. And so in order

  557. to enter

  558. the most holy place

  559. which is just

  560. a shadow

  561. of the real thing,

  562. the high priest

  563. would prepare himself

  564. by many times

  565. going into the temple

  566. the week of

  567. and just staying

  568. in the temple

  569. so he wouldn't

  570. accidentally defile himself,

  571. so he wouldn't

  572. accidentally touch

  573. something unclean

  574. and he would

  575. go through

  576. this whole process

  577. of making sure

  578. he was clean

  579. before he went

  580. into the most

  581. holy place.

  582. All of this

  583. showing

  584. that God

  585. is holy

  586. and because

  587. of our sin

  588. we cannot

  589. enter his presence.

  590. Probably

  591. my favorite movie

  592. growing up

  593. was Indiana Jones

  594. it's not probably

  595. it was my favorite

  596. movie growing up

  597. Indiana Jones

  598. The Last Crusade.

  599. Second behind that

  600. a close second

  601. behind that

  602. was Raiders of the Lost Ark

  603. Anybody seen

  604. Raiders of the Lost Ark?

  605. Okay

  606. some of you

  607. well done

  608. some of you

  609. need to go back

  610. and really revisit

  611. some of that

  612. 1980s cinema

  613. but Raiders of the Lost Ark

  614. follows the

  615. kind of

  616. an archaeologist

  617. played by Harrison Ford

  618. named Indiana Jones

  619. and so

  620. while he's the main

  621. character

  622. of the movie

  623. the movie

  624. really centers

  625. and focuses

  626. on finding

  627. the Ark of the Covenant

  628. and so

  629. in the movie

  630. there's this

  631. quest

  632. of them

  633. trying to

  634. find the Ark

  635. and this was

  636. the golden box

  637. which represented

  638. God's holy presence

  639. the God

  640. of the Ark

  641. of the Covenant

  642. was not a

  643. God you

  644. cozy up to

  645. and snuggle up to

  646. very easily

  647. you see in the movie

  648. when the lid

  649. is opened

  650. they are

  651. killed

  652. by the fire

  653. of God's holiness

  654. now I've seen

  655. this movie

  656. dozens and dozens

  657. of times

  658. but I've only

  659. seen this part

  660. of the movie

  661. just a handful

  662. of times

  663. because growing up

  664. as soon as it

  665. came on

  666. my mom would

  667. cover my eyes

  668. cover the TV

  669. stand in front of it

  670. tell us to look away

  671. don't look at this

  672. for some reason

  673. she didn't want us

  674. to see someone's

  675. face get melted off

  676. when they opened this

  677. but it's one of those

  678. things where

  679. the Raiders of the Lost Ark

  680. while it's just

  681. a movie

  682. and there's so many

  683. things around it

  684. that are just filled

  685. with speculation

  686. one of the things

  687. that it does do

  688. a very good job

  689. of

  690. is showing us

  691. what it does get right

  692. is showing us

  693. that God is more

  694. holy

  695. than you can

  696. possibly imagine

  697. and you cannot

  698. just walk

  699. right into his

  700. presence

  701. with your sin

  702. not atoned for

  703. there are many

  704. things that we

  705. don't take seriously

  706. enough

  707. as believers

  708. when it comes

  709. to the things

  710. of God

  711. but I think

  712. one of the things

  713. at the top of that list

  714. is God's holiness

  715. it's not something

  716. we take very seriously

  717. but we should

  718. you see

  719. seeing who you are

  720. before a holy

  721. and perfect God

  722. is a good thing

  723. now it can be

  724. a scary thing

  725. it can be terrifying

  726. to think about

  727. your sin

  728. before a holy God

  729. but it is the beginning

  730. of seeing

  731. and experiencing

  732. God's grace

  733. but there's one

  734. final truth

  735. that I want to bring

  736. our attention to

  737. this morning

  738. and it's this

  739. as we see

  740. God's holiness

  741. let it open

  742. our eyes

  743. to see

  744. the beauty

  745. of God's grace

  746. see God's holiness

  747. and see the beauty

  748. of God's grace

  749. Hebrews 9

  750. 11 through 14

  751. is some of the most

  752. beautiful words

  753. that we find

  754. in Hebrews

  755. it says this

  756. but when Christ

  757. appeared

  758. as a high priest

  759. of the good things

  760. that have come

  761. then through

  762. the greater

  763. and more perfect tent

  764. not made

  765. with the hands

  766. that is not

  767. of this creation

  768. he entered

  769. once for all

  770. into the holy places

  771. so he didn't just

  772. go behind the curtain

  773. he didn't just go

  774. into the shadow

  775. he went to where

  776. Isaiah could barely

  777. describe it

  778. to the real holy place

  779. to the real throne room

  780. not by means

  781. of the blood

  782. of goats

  783. and calves

  784. but by the means

  785. of his own blood

  786. thus securing

  787. eternal redemption

  788. for the blood

  789. of goats

  790. and bulls

  791. and the sprinkling

  792. of defiled persons

  793. with the ashes

  794. of a heifer

  795. sanctify for the

  796. purification of the

  797. flesh

  798. how much more

  799. will the blood

  800. of Christ

  801. who through

  802. the eternal spirit

  803. offered himself

  804. without blemish

  805. to God

  806. how much more

  807. will that

  808. purify

  809. our conscience

  810. from dead works

  811. to serve

  812. the living God

  813. at this point

  814. the author

  815. begins to show

  816. us the beauty

  817. of God's grace

  818. by highlighting

  819. the superior

  820. offering for sin

  821. that Jesus provides

  822. not with the blood

  823. of animals

  824. but with his own

  825. blood

  826. with his own life

  827. last week

  828. we highlighted

  829. the importance

  830. of the new covenant

  831. and how much better

  832. the new covenant

  833. is than the old covenant

  834. and now the author

  835. is showing us

  836. the sufficiency

  837. of this new covenant

  838. if last week

  839. we were highlighting

  840. the fact that

  841. the new covenant

  842. is better

  843. this week

  844. we're highlighting

  845. the fact that

  846. the new covenant

  847. is sufficient

  848. and it's sufficient

  849. because of Christ

  850. in the previous section

  851. the author

  852. masterfully

  853. made it known

  854. that because

  855. of the holiness

  856. of God

  857. it is impossible

  858. for us to enter

  859. into his presence

  860. we long to

  861. we go to great lengths

  862. to try to

  863. but ultimately

  864. it is impossible

  865. on our own

  866. it is a never

  867. ending endeavor

  868. to be with God

  869. but now

  870. we see

  871. there is a way

  872. and the way

  873. has a name

  874. and his name

  875. is Jesus

  876. and this way

  877. to the father

  878. is final

  879. it's not a temporary

  880. fix

  881. that needs to be

  882. done again

  883. the moment

  884. you leave

  885. the holy of holies

  886. it's not something

  887. that needs to be

  888. done again

  889. as soon as you

  890. sin

  891. it's a change

  892. in status

  893. it's something

  894. that happens

  895. once

  896. and changes

  897. for us

  898. for the rest

  899. of our lives

  900. I love how

  901. Jerry Bridges

  902. refers to it

  903. he says

  904. it is a point

  905. in time event

  906. resulting in a

  907. continuing

  908. permanent

  909. change of status

  910. we see

  911. things like this

  912. all of the time

  913. we may not

  914. pick up on it

  915. but we see

  916. things that

  917. that this

  918. takes place

  919. all the time

  920. the adoption

  921. of a child

  922. when someone

  923. becomes a

  924. naturalized citizen

  925. this point

  926. in time

  927. experience

  928. changes

  929. their status

  930. for the rest

  931. of their

  932. lives

  933. when we come

  934. to faith

  935. in Christ

  936. there is a

  937. point in time

  938. where we have

  939. trusted Christ

  940. and we're by

  941. faith united

  942. with him

  943. in his death

  944. and his death

  945. became our death

  946. his obedience

  947. became our

  948. obedience

  949. his righteousness

  950. became our

  951. righteousness

  952. righteousness

  953. where he

  954. becomes our

  955. representative

  956. where his

  957. victory

  958. over death

  959. hell and the

  960. grave

  961. becomes our

  962. victory over

  963. death hell

  964. and the grave

  965. there's a point

  966. in time when we

  967. give Christ

  968. our sin

  969. our shame

  970. our regret

  971. and in return

  972. he clothes us

  973. with his

  974. righteousness

  975. and so

  976. God when he

  977. looks at us

  978. he doesn't see

  979. that sin

  980. and that shame

  981. he looks at us

  982. and sees his

  983. son's perfect

  984. life

  985. given for us

  986. there's a

  987. change

  988. it happens

  989. where you go

  990. from death

  991. to life

  992. from being an

  993. enemy to being

  994. God's

  995. child

  996. and the most

  997. important question

  998. we could ever

  999. ask is this

  1000. how can I

  1001. a sinful

  1002. human being

  1003. come into a

  1004. right relationship

  1005. with a holy

  1006. and just

  1007. God

  1008. I believe

  1009. our passage

  1010. today not only

  1011. sets this

  1012. question up

  1013. for us to ask

  1014. I believe

  1015. it not only

  1016. tees it up

  1017. and begs us

  1018. to ask the

  1019. question

  1020. how can this

  1021. be

  1022. but it also

  1023. answers the

  1024. question

  1025. and the only

  1026. way we can do

  1027. this is because

  1028. of Jesus

  1029. because he

  1030. offers a

  1031. better

  1032. sacrifice

  1033. verse 14

  1034. tells us

  1035. that Christ

  1036. accomplished

  1037. our forgiveness

  1038. by his blood

  1039. that he has

  1040. cleansed our

  1041. consciousness

  1042. something only

  1043. he could do

  1044. and he does

  1045. this so that

  1046. we can serve

  1047. the living

  1048. God

  1049. listen to

  1050. verse 14

  1051. it says

  1052. how much

  1053. more

  1054. will the

  1055. blood of

  1056. Christ

  1057. who through

  1058. the eternal

  1059. spirit offered

  1060. himself without

  1061. blemish

  1062. before to

  1063. God

  1064. purify our

  1065. conscience

  1066. from dead

  1067. works

  1068. to serve

  1069. the living

  1070. God

  1071. from dead

  1072. works

  1073. to serve

  1074. the living

  1075. God

  1076. you see

  1077. religion

  1078. is filled

  1079. with all

  1080. kinds of

  1081. works

  1082. but they

  1083. are dead

  1084. because before

  1085. the gospel

  1086. the reason

  1087. we were

  1088. doing good

  1089. works

  1090. was to

  1091. try to

  1092. get God

  1093. to approve

  1094. of us

  1095. but this

  1096. is not

  1097. how the

  1098. gospel

  1099. works

  1100. in fact

  1101. if you

  1102. are doing

  1103. something

  1104. so that

  1105. God

  1106. will reward

  1107. you for

  1108. it

  1109. that's

  1110. not

  1111. loving

  1112. God

  1113. that's

  1114. loving

  1115. yourself

  1116. if you're

  1117. doing

  1118. something

  1119. in order

  1120. that God

  1121. will reward

  1122. you for

  1123. it

  1124. that's

  1125. not

  1126. loving

  1127. God

  1128. that's

  1129. loving

  1130. yourself

  1131. think of

  1132. it like

  1133. this

  1134. imagine

  1135. that one

  1136. of you

  1137. has a

  1138. vacation

  1139. home

  1140. maybe

  1141. at the

  1142. beach

  1143. or maybe

  1144. a cabin

  1145. in the

  1146. mountains

  1147. and I

  1148. realize

  1149. that you

  1150. like to

  1151. let your

  1152. friends

  1153. stay there

  1154. for free

  1155. that you

  1156. say hey

  1157. all of my

  1158. friends can

  1159. go there

  1160. whenever they

  1161. want

  1162. they can

  1163. stay there

  1164. for free

  1165. and all

  1166. of a sudden

  1167. I start

  1168. texting

  1169. hey buddy

  1170. how are you

  1171. doing today

  1172. I hope

  1173. you're having

  1174. a great

  1175. day

  1176. hey

  1177. why don't

  1178. you come

  1179. over to

  1180. to our

  1181. house

  1182. tonight

  1183. for supper

  1184. how about

  1185. I take you

  1186. out to

  1187. lunch

  1188. today

  1189. how about

  1190. I do

  1191. all of

  1192. these things

  1193. for you

  1194. you see

  1195. that's not

  1196. love for

  1197. you

  1198. that's an

  1199. investment

  1200. on my

  1201. part

  1202. that's not

  1203. love

  1204. I'm not

  1205. doing that

  1206. because I

  1207. love you

  1208. I'm doing

  1209. that so that

  1210. I can get

  1211. something

  1212. from you

  1213. this is the

  1214. difference between

  1215. religion

  1216. and the

  1217. gospel

  1218. in religion

  1219. you do

  1220. good works

  1221. in order

  1222. to be

  1223. accepted

  1224. with the

  1225. gospel

  1226. you do

  1227. good works

  1228. because you

  1229. have been

  1230. accepted

  1231. religion

  1232. you try to

  1233. stop gossiping

  1234. in hopes

  1235. that you

  1236. will be

  1237. accepted

  1238. by God

  1239. with the

  1240. gospel

  1241. you stop

  1242. putting down

  1243. others

  1244. because you

  1245. love Jesus

  1246. and following

  1247. him is what

  1248. gives your

  1249. life meaning

  1250. and not what

  1251. others think

  1252. of you

  1253. religion

  1254. tries to

  1255. stop lying

  1256. cheating

  1257. stealing

  1258. looking at

  1259. pornography

  1260. focusing on

  1261. earthly things

  1262. and the

  1263. gospel says

  1264. Jesus is

  1265. better than

  1266. all of these

  1267. things

  1268. the picture

  1269. that comes

  1270. to my mind

  1271. is that of

  1272. a child

  1273. a young

  1274. child

  1275. young enough

  1276. to still

  1277. think that

  1278. their parents

  1279. are great

  1280. and they

  1281. try to do

  1282. everything

  1283. that they

  1284. can to

  1285. please them

  1286. you know

  1287. that three

  1288. month window

  1289. that your

  1290. children fall

  1291. into that

  1292. category

  1293. where they

  1294. think you're

  1295. great and

  1296. they try to

  1297. do everything

  1298. to please

  1299. you

  1300. Charlotte

  1301. is close

  1302. she's kind

  1303. of getting

  1304. out of that

  1305. window right

  1306. now but

  1307. she's still

  1308. there a

  1309. little bit

  1310. and there'll

  1311. be times

  1312. where she'll

  1313. be like

  1314. daddy

  1315. mommy

  1316. who do you

  1317. want me

  1318. to ride

  1319. home with

  1320. maybe we're

  1321. at church

  1322. together

  1323. maybe we're

  1324. somewhere

  1325. and we both

  1326. drove separately

  1327. she's like

  1328. who wants me

  1329. to ride

  1330. with them

  1331. and I'm like

  1332. I want you

  1333. to ride

  1334. with me

  1335. Catherine's like

  1336. I want you

  1337. to ride

  1338. with me

  1339. and Charlotte

  1340. gets a big

  1341. grin on her

  1342. face

  1343. and then she'll

  1344. choose one of us

  1345. to ride home

  1346. with and then

  1347. on the way

  1348. home she'll be

  1349. like daddy

  1350. aren't you so

  1351. glad I chose

  1352. you

  1353. and I say

  1354. yes sweetheart

  1355. I'm so glad

  1356. you did

  1357. this is the

  1358. picture that

  1359. comes to mind

  1360. where we love

  1361. our heavenly

  1362. father so much

  1363. that it is a

  1364. joy to serve

  1365. him

  1366. we're not

  1367. serving him

  1368. out of obligation

  1369. we're not

  1370. serving him

  1371. to try to get

  1372. something from him

  1373. but we're serving

  1374. him because we

  1375. love him

  1376. and we love

  1377. to do what

  1378. pleases the

  1379. father

  1380. and we love

  1381. to give our

  1382. life to him

  1383. you see my

  1384. hope and prayer

  1385. this morning

  1386. is that we

  1387. see clearly

  1388. that God

  1389. is more

  1390. holy than

  1391. we can

  1392. imagine

  1393. and because

  1394. of Jesus

  1395. we not only

  1396. can have a

  1397. relationship with

  1398. God but we

  1399. also get to

  1400. serve him

  1401. father thank

  1402. you so very

  1403. much for

  1404. everything that

  1405. you do for us

  1406. each and every

  1407. day lord we

  1408. thank you for

  1409. your word we

  1410. thank you for

  1411. how it draws

  1412. us into you

  1413. and to a

  1414. closer walk

  1415. with you

  1416. and so lord I

  1417. pray that if

  1418. there's someone

  1419. here today that

  1420. needs to know

  1421. you lord they

  1422. would see your

  1423. holiness they

  1424. would see their

  1425. sinfulness and

  1426. realize that there

  1427. is only one hope

1428. and that is to put

  1429. their faith and

  1430. trust in you

  1431. so lord I

  1432. pray that you

  1433. give them the

  1434. boldness to do

  1435. that to step

  1436. out maybe it's

  1437. having a conversation

  1438. with me maybe it's

  1439. talking with the

  1440. person that they

  1441. came here with

  1442. today but whatever

  1443. the case may be

  1444. lord I pray that

  1445. you give them the

  1446. boldness to follow

  1447. you but lord I

  1448. also pray that you

1449. be with the rest of

1450. us those of us who

  1451. have placed our

  1452. faith and our

  1453. trust in you lord

  1454. help us to see

  1455. your holiness help

  1456. us to see the

  1457. gift that we've

  1458. been given in

  1459. christ to save

  1460. us from our

  1461. sins and from

  1462. that lord help

  1463. us to willingly

  1464. and boldly and

  1465. courageously proclaim

  1466. lord here is my

  1467. life take it and

  1468. use it lord we

  1469. ask all these

  1470. things in jesus

  1471. precious name

  1472. amen

  1473. who have been

  1474. who have been

  1475. who have been

  1476. who have been

  1477. who have been

  1478. who have been

  1479. who have been

  1480. who have been

  1481. who have been

  1482. who have been

  1483. who have been

  1484. !

  1485. who have been

  1486. !

  1487. who have been

  1488. !

  1489. !
