  1. Well, it's good to be here today, good to be able to share God's Word with you from the pulpit this morning.

  2. I do want to encourage you to be partnering with our pastor this week in prayer as he is on sabbatical.

  3. And just pray that God will speak to him during that time and it will be a season of refreshing.

  4. And when he gets back that his batteries will be recharged and all the staff is here ready to serve you so that he can have that quiet time away in the next week or two.

  5. And so thank you for partnering with him in prayer.

  6. I want to invite you to turn your Bibles this morning to Hebrews chapter number 11.

  7. Hebrews chapter number 11.

  8. You know, as a child growing up in church, I recall singing this song quite a bit in the children's choir.

  9. And it went like this. Maybe you've sung it before.

  10. Father Abraham had many sons.

  11. Many sons had Father Abraham.

  12. And I am one of them, and so are you.

  13. So let's just praise the Lord.

  14. And then we'd go right arm.

  15. And you'd stick your right arm out there.

  16. You might pump it a little.

  17. And then you'd sing the whole thing again.

  18. And right on cue, you would add another action.

  19. And it became a spiritualized version of the hokey pokey.

  20. You put your right arm in.

  21. You put your left arm in.

  22. You put your right foot in and your left foot in.

  23. And you put your chin up.

  24. And you turn around.

  25. And then for the grand finale, what do you do?

  26. You sit down.

  27. Now, that's been a lot of years ago.

  28. And I've given a lot of thought to that since.

  29. And I have determined that actually that it's one great big trick.

  30. All those folks wanted to do with us singing that song is to burn a little energy out of us

  31. and then make us sit down and be quiet.

  32. But I thought of those words.

  33. Father Abraham had many sons.

  34. Why on earth do we sing about Father Abraham?

  35. Abraham.

  36. Adrian Rogers, my favorite preacher of all time, once said this.

  37. He said, when you came to Christ, when you were saved by the grace of God,

  38. God enrolled you in the school of faith.

  39. Life is the classroom.

  40. The Bible is the textbook.

  41. The prophets and the apostles, well, they're the professors.

  42. And Abraham would have to be the dean.

  43. Father Abraham, the father of faith, the father of them that believe, the dean of the school of faith,

  44. whatever you call him, whatever title you give him, don't miss his faith.

  45. I want you to look with me this morning.

  46. Hebrews chapter 11, beginning with verse 1.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  47. Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

  48. For by it, that is faith, the people of old received their commendation.

  49. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God,

  50. so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

  51. Go down to verse 8.

  52. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance,

  53. and he went out not knowing where he was going.

  54. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land,

  55. living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise.

  56. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.

  57. Will you join me as we pray?

  58. Father, I pray that in this time this morning, as we open your word,

  59. Lord, just as we have been worshiping you through our singing and our praying and our giving,

  60. Lord, we worship you now through the preaching of your word,

  61. and Lord, I pray that we be active participants in it,

  62. that we would listen carefully to your word,

  63. that we would listen carefully, what do you have to say to us,

  64. and that we would respond as doers of your word in obedience to your glory and to your honor.

  65. Lord, thank you for those gathered this morning.

  66. You brought us here for this appointed time,

  67. and we give it to you in Jesus' name.

  68. And all of God's people say it.

  69. Amen.

  70. If you look at Hebrews chapter 10, verse 39 there as it closes out,

    Hebrews 10:39

  71. it's a reminder that we are not to shrink back, church.

  72. We are to go forward, and we are to be people of faith.

  73. In fact, if you go just a little bit further along,

  74. you find in Hebrews 11, 6, it says,

  75. Without faith, it is impossible to please God.

  76. And I bet to a woman, I bet to a man, if I walked around and I said,

  77. Do you want to please God?

  78. We'd all say, Of course we want to please God.

  79. Well, without faith, it's impossible.

  80. Going back to Adrian Rogers once more, he said,

  81. If you please God, it doesn't matter who you displease.

  82. And if you displease God, it frankly doesn't matter who you please.

  83. John 3, 18 says this,

  84. Whoever believes in him, that's faith, is not condemned.

  85. But whoever does not believe, that's unbelief,

  86. is condemned already because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

  87. And throughout Hebrews, we have seen that God has provided that perfect sacrifice for sin in Christ.

  88. And even though we're all sinners, and even though we're all deserving of death and hell,

  89. because God has made a sacrifice for sin,

  90. the only thing preventing us is unbelief.

  91. We have to trust by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  92. who is the way, the truth, and the life.

  93. Jesus was one time asked,

  94. What must we do to do the works of God?

  95. And he had to get them back on course, had to get them back on track.

  96. And so Jesus said in John 6, 29,

  97. This is the work of God,

  98. that you believe in him whom he has sent.

  99. We have to place our faith in Jesus Christ.

  100. But I want to share this with you.

  101. Not only is it that we have to place our faith in Jesus for salvation,

  102. but we are then to live by faith,

  103. and faith becomes the mark of the Christian life.

  104. This morning as we look at Hebrews, chapter number 11,

  105. just listening in to the text,

  106. looking at the life of Abraham,

  107. seeing this man who is called the father of faith,

  108. there are three pertinent lessons that I believe we need to learn today.

  109. And then we can go eat fried chicken or whatever you want to have, okay?

  110. Lesson number one is this.

  111. We must hear what God says.

  112. We must hear what God says.

  113. Faith begins with hearing God.

  114. Now it's so much easier for us to want to listen to ourselves,

  115. and what we think and what we feel or what others think and what they feel,

  116. because we maybe want to please them and listen to the world

  117. and do what the world says so we can all get along.

  118. But the reality is, if we're going to live by faith,

  119. lives that bring honor and glory to God,

  120. then the most important thing,

  121. the most important one that we need to hear from is God himself.

  122. Any other starting point will lead us astray.

  123. Therefore, we have to begin with God's word.

  124. Hebrews 11, 8 simply begins with these two words,

  125. by faith.

  126. Hebrews 11 has been called the great hall of faith chapter.

  127. And if you read through there, you'll see 18 transitions

  128. where it says by faith, by faith, by faith, by faith.

  129. Clearly, God is wanting to show us something extremely important here about faith.

  130. When we speak of the faith of Abraham,

  131. it's a fair question to ask,

  132. when did his faith begin?

  133. And we find that not in Hebrews,

  134. but we have to go all the way back to Genesis chapter number 12.

  135. His name at that time was not Abraham,

  136. it was Abram,

  137. and I'll confess I'll probably refer to him both ways throughout this message.

  138. But he was living as just a regular guy over there in the Ur of the Chaldees,

  139. and he was going about his business,

  140. going about his life until God sought him out,

  141. until God spoke to him,

  142. and it changed his life's course and his eternity.

  143. In the Bible, it says in Genesis 12, 1,

  144. Now the Lord said to Abram,

  145. and don't miss it,

  146. the Lord said to Abram,

  147. it is God who is speaking to him,

  148. it is God who sought him out.

  149. And how many of us here today

  150. understands that the only way that we know that we are a sinner,

  151. the only way that we know that we need salvation,

  152. the only way we know that Jesus is the solution,

  153. and that he will save us,

  154. is that God first speak to our heart.

  155. He has to show us that in ourselves.

  156. And so what does God say to Abram?

  157. Does God say to Abram,

  158. you know Abram,

  159. I sure am impressed with you,

  160. I sure am impressed with all of your accomplishments,

  161. you have a beautiful wife,

  162. you have a lovely home,

  163. your cattle, they're legit,

  164. you have possessions that are tremendous,

  165. look at you, Abraham,

  166. you're a handsome guy in spite of your age,

  167. look at those muscles,

  168. look how ripped you are,

  169. you must be hitting the gym, Mr. Abraham.

  170. You're the man,

  171. how did you accomplish all of this?

  172. Maybe you need to write a self-help book

  173. and entitle it,

  174. Live Ur Best Life Now.

  175. Is that what God said?

  176. No, what God said to him is,

  177. you need to get out of town.

  178. Genesis 12, 1-3 says,

  179. Go from your country and your kindred

  180. and your father's house

  181. to the land I will show you,

  182. and I will make you a great nation,

  183. and I will bless you,

  184. and I will make your name great

  185. so that you'll be a blessing.

  186. I will bless those who bless you,

  187. and in him who dishonors you,

  188. I will curse,

  189. and in you all the families of the earth

  190. will be blessed.

  191. God spoke to Abraham.

  192. Abraham heard what God said.

  193. In fact, if you listen closely

  194. to what I just read,

  195. you'll hear God saying,

  196. I will, I will, I will.

  197. He said,

  198. Go to the land,

  199. I will show you.

  200. I will make you a great nation.

  201. I will bless you.

  202. I will make your name great.

  203. I will bless those who bless you.

  204. I will curse those who dishonor you.

  205. And all the families of the earth

  206. will be blessed.

  207. God's saying,

  208. This is what I will do.

  209. So Abraham,

  210. all you have to do,

  211. I'm going to do this.

  212. All you have to do is go.

  213. All you have to do is trust me.

  214. All you have to do is obey.

  215. And spoiler alert,

  216. Genesis 12, 4 simply says,

  217. So Abram went.

  218. By the way,

  219. when Abraham left Ur

  220. and traveled and obeyed God

  221. to leave that place,

  222. he was 75 years old.

  223. Hear me when I say it.

  224. His journey of faith began

  225. when he was 75 years old.

  226. So perhaps there's someone here today,

  227. maybe you're on up in age a little bit,

  228. you've never trusted Christ,

  229. and you'd say,

  230. It's too late for me.

  231. It's just too late for me

  232. to turn my life around now

  233. and give it to Jesus.

  234. It's too late.

  235. Or maybe there's somebody

  236. you're praying for today

  237. and you've been praying,

  238. praying, praying

  239. that he or she would be saved.

  240. And maybe you're just about ready

  241. to give up on praying for them.

  242. And I would say to you,

  243. that if Abraham could begin

  244. his journey of faith at 75,

  245. whether you're 5, 75, or 105,

  246. today is the day of salvation.

  247. And you can begin

  248. your journey of faith today.

  249. When our kids were very young,

  250. we wanted to teach them the Bible.

  251. And we bought some videos

  252. that was called

  253. What's in the Bible with Buck Denver.

  254. I don't know if any of you

  255. have seen those,

  256. your kids or grandkids.

  257. And we would use that

  258. to help them remember.

  259. And they would have silly songs

  260. and things on there.

  261. And there was one song written by

  262. and sung by the fabulous

  263. Bentley Brothers.

  264. And they sung this

  265. about the book of Genesis.

  266. Genesis begins it all.

  267. And most appropriately,

  268. it's at the beginning

  269. of the Bible.

  270. Genesis really means beginning.

  271. If it were anywhere else

  272. in the Bible,

  273. that would be kind of confusing.

  274. And from there,

  275. we taught the kids

  276. the book of Genesis,

  277. the beginning.

  278. And when we look at that

  279. book of Genesis,

  280. even before Abraham,

  281. even before we meet him,

  282. what happens?

  283. We see creation.

  284. The very first verse

  285. in the Bible,

  286. Genesis 1-1 says,

  287. In the beginning,

  288. God created the heavens

  289. and the earth.

  290. Now, look right here

  291. at Hebrews 11-3 once again.

  292. See how it fits.

  293. By faith we understand

  294. that the universe

  295. was created by the word of God

  296. so that what is seen

  297. was not made out of things

  298. that are visible.

  299. So Genesis begins

  300. with creation.

  301. But I don't know

  302. if you've ever noticed this,

  303. but the very last verse

  304. in the book of Genesis,

  305. this will bless your heart,

  306. Genesis 50-26,

  307. what does it say?

  308. It says,

  309. So Joseph died,

  310. being 110 years old,

  311. and they embalmed him,

  312. and he was put in a coffin

  313. in Egypt.

  314. So think about it.

  315. Genesis begins with creation.

  316. It ends with a coffin.

  317. It begins with life,

  318. and it ends with death,

  319. and we can all agree

  320. something has gone wrong in there.

  321. And what's gone wrong

  322. is in the book of Genesis

  323. we see creation,

  324. and then we see the fall.

  325. We see sin entering

  326. into the world,

  327. and the penalty of sin

  328. following it,

  329. and death comes into the world.

  330. And we follow that on down,

  331. and we see the flood,

  332. and then we see

  333. the Tower of Babel.

  334. Remember, God said,

  335. I will, I will, I will.

  336. If you listen in

  337. to what was said

  338. at the Tower of Babel,

  339. here's what you would have heard.

  340. Come, let us make bricks

  341. and burn them thoroughly.

  342. Come, let us build

  343. a city and a tower

  344. with its tops in the heavens.

  345. Let us make a name

  346. for ourselves,

  347. lest we be dispersed

  348. over the face of the earth.

  349. And the contrast

  350. could not be more striking.

  351. We hear mankind here saying,

  352. let us, let us, let us.

  353. It's all about us.

  354. It's all about our name.

  355. It's all about our glory.

  356. It's all about our kingdom.

  357. It's all about

  358. what we can accomplish

  359. on our own.

  360. Do you hear the pride in there?

  361. Who needs God?

  362. Who needs it?

  363. We've got this.

  364. And so mankind chooses then

  365. to worship and serve

  366. the creature

  367. and the created thing

  368. rather than the creator.

  369. But on the other hand,

  370. in contrast,

  371. that's Genesis 11.

  372. Genesis 12,

  373. right next door to it,

  374. not by accident.

  375. God says to Abram,

  376. not what can you do,

  377. not this let us business,

  378. but God says to Abram,

  379. I will,

  380. I will,

  381. I will.

  382. Genesis 11 and 12

  383. is a contrasting picture

  384. of works apart from God

  385. that are futile

  386. and faith in the God

  387. who is faithful,

  388. who does a good work in us,

  389. who produces those good works

  390. in our lives.

  391. Abram

  392. hears God.

  393. That's where faith begins.

  394. It begins with hearing God.

  395. I ask you this morning,

  396. do you hear God?

  397. Do you hear God's voice

  398. in your life?

  399. You know,

  400. I believe sometimes

  401. we think,

  402. my goodness,

  403. if I could have experienced

  404. what Abram could experience,

  405. that'd be awesome.

  406. It'd be great

  407. if God would speak to me

  408. like that.

  409. He would just appear

  410. before me and say,

  411. Jason,

  412. this is what I want you to do.

  413. This is what I want you to hear.

  414. We may think it'd be great

  415. if we could have an experience

  416. like Moses

  417. in front of the burning bush

  418. or like Saul

  419. on the road to Damascus

  420. when Jesus intercepted him.

  421. Maybe we would not

  422. want that experience,

  423. but we look at it

  424. and we say,

  425. you know,

  426. I just wish that God

  427. would speak to me that way.

  428. And if we're not careful,

  429. we'll begin to think

  430. like we're at a disadvantage

  431. in comparison to those guys.

  432. But brothers and sisters,

  433. be reminded of what it says

  434. in Hebrews 1,

  435. 1 through 2,

  436. the very beginning

  437. of the book

  438. that we've been studying.

  439. Long ago,

  440. at many times,

  441. and in many ways,

  442. God spoke to our fathers

  443. by the prophets,

  444. but in these last days,

  445. he has spoken to us

  446. by his son.

  447. Church,

  448. I want to tell you today,

  449. we're not at a disadvantage.

  450. We're at an advantage

  451. and I'll tell you why.

  452. We have the whole counsel

  453. of God's word.

  454. We have the whole Bible

  455. in our hands,

  456. the very word of God.

  457. These Old Testament characters

  458. and Saul,

  459. they had to wait

  460. for a visitation.

  461. They had to wait

  462. for God to break through.

  463. But we can open

  464. the word of God

  465. and hear from him today,

  466. right now.

  467. We can have the mind of Christ.

  468. God gives us his spirit

  469. who lives within us.

  470. You see,

  471. the reality is

  472. we don't have to wait

  473. to hear

  474. or have a visitation.

  475. The reality is

  476. we can blow the dust

  477. off our Bible

  478. and open it up

  479. and read it

  480. and have confidence

  481. that we are hearing

  482. the very voice of God

  483. speaking to us

  484. through his word.

  485. Faith begins with hearing.

  486. But the second lesson

  487. is that having heard,

  488. we have to believe.

  489. We have to believe

  490. what God says.

  491. Our problem most of the time

  492. is not that God's not speaking,

  493. it's that we don't believe

  494. and we don't do

  495. what God is saying.

  496. We may say that we do,

  497. but our actions,

  498. our disobedience

  499. betray us.

  500. Dr. Mark Lederbach,

  501. one of my professors

  502. at Southeastern Seminary,

  503. would always say,

  504. stated belief

  505. plus actual practice

  506. is actually

  507. what you really believe.

  508. Well,

  509. what was Abraham's

  510. actual practice?

  511. He heard what God said.

  512. I will,

  513. I will,

  514. I will.

  515. He took God

  516. at his word

  517. and he believed.

  518. Romans 10, 17

  519. says that

  520. faith comes by hearing

  521. and hearing

  522. by the word of God.

  523. Abraham heard God.

  524. He believed God.

  525. And Hebrews 11, 8

  526. says that

  527. he was called

  528. to go out

  529. to a place

  530. that he would receive

  531. as an inheritance.

  532. And he went out

  533. not knowing

  534. where he was going.

  535. Where Abraham lived,

  536. quite frankly,

  537. he had it made.

  538. A lot like us.

  539. He had all that he needed.

  540. He didn't have children yet.

  541. That would be a different story.

  542. He had a wife.

  543. He had extended family.

  544. He had servants.

  545. He had wealth.

  546. He had fame.

  547. He was in a place

  548. of comfort

  549. and familiarity.

  550. He had no reason

  551. to leave all that behind.

  552. In fact,

  553. logically,

  554. it wouldn't make sense

  555. for him to leave Ur.

  556. But,

  557. except for God

  558. called him

  559. to go.

  560. Abraham could have said,

  561. I have everything

  562. that I need

  563. right here.

  564. But the Bible says

  565. he did go.

  566. He went out

  567. not knowing

  568. where he was going.

  569. Pastor John Phillips,

  570. a great British preacher,

  571. told a story here

  572. about Abraham

  573. that has stuck with me

  574. through the years.

  575. He said,

  576. if you would sanctify

  577. your imagination,

  578. and just think of this,

  579. that Abraham was

  580. a very wealthy man.

  581. He had a lot of possessions.

  582. Can you imagine Abraham

  583. walking up into

  584. the National Bank of Ur?

  585. And he walks up

  586. to the teller

  587. and he says,

  588. I would like to see

  589. the president of the bank.

  590. And she says to him,

  591. well,

  592. he's a very busy man.

  593. Do you have an appointment?

  594. He said,

  595. no,

  596. I don't,

  597. but just tell him

  598. that Abraham is here.

  599. So she calls

  600. the bank president

  601. and sure enough,

  602. immediately,

  603. he comes rushing out

  604. because he's one

  605. of the richest men in town.

  606. He said,

  607. oh,

  608. Mr. Abram,

  609. it's so good to see you,

  610. Mr. Abram.

  611. What can I do for you today,

  612. Mr. Abram?

  613. He said,

  614. well,

  615. I'm actually here

  616. to make a withdrawal.

  617. Oh,

  618. yes,

  619. sir,

  620. Mr. Abram,

  621. that's great.

  622. How much did you want

  623. to take out?

  624. And Abram said,

  625. I want to take all of it out.

  626. And he said,

  627. say what?

  628. He said,

  629. I want to take all of it out.

  630. Well,

  631. why,

  632. Mr. Abram?

  633. Did we do something wrong

  634. if we not served you well?

  635. Why would you want to

  636. take it all out?

  637. He said,

  638. oh,

  639. no.

  640. He said,

  641. actually,

  642. I'm leaving town.

  643. I'm moving.

  644. You're moving?

  645. Well,

  646. where are you going,

  647. Mr. Abram?

  648. I don't know.

  649. He said back,

  650. you mean you want to

  651. take out all of your money

  652. and you don't even know

  653. where you're going?

  654. That's right.

  655. What?

  656. He said,

  657. well,

  658. God told me

  659. to get up and go out.

  660. Not knowing where,

  661. but he said that

  662. he will show me the land

  663. to promise

  664. he'll take me there.

  665. The bank president said,

  666. Mr. Abram,

  667. are you feeling well?

  668. Do you need to see a doctor?

  669. What is going on?

  670. Do you need a counselor?

  671. How about a psychologist?

  672. What's going on,

  673. Abram?

  674. And Abram said,

  675. I'll take it all in cash,

  676. please.

  677. And off he went

  678. and he left behind

  679. everything that was familiar.

  680. Years ago,

  681. I was a missions pastor.

  682. I led teams all over the world

  683. to do mission trips

  684. and when I would take a team out,

  685. everybody wanted to know

  686. the answers to all the questions

  687. before you'd go.

  688. Where are we going?

  689. When are we going?

  690. What are we going to do

  691. when we get there?

  692. Who can go?

  693. What is the cost?

  694. What is the weather?

  695. Is there indoor plumbing?

  696. Is there hot water?

  697. Can I get a shower?

  698. Is there fried chicken there

  699. because we're Baptists?

  700. All the questions.

  701. And the reality is,

  702. no matter how many

  703. frequently asked questions,

  704. flyers I put together,

  705. I couldn't answer every question.

  706. There were some things

  707. that were unknown.

  708. And I would teach my team.

  709. I would say,

  710. listen,

  711. you know the song

  712. Trust and Obey?

  713. We're going to make it this,

  714. Flex and Obey.

  715. For there's no other way

  716. to be happy in Jesus

  717. but to flex and obey

  718. because if you've ever

  719. been on a mission trip,

  720. nothing ever goes

  721. according to plan.

  722. And here's the deal.

  723. Abraham was called to go.

  724. And two things are clear.

  725. God called Abraham to go,

  726. but he didn't provide

  727. the itinerary.

  728. I want to ask you something.

  729. Would you go on a mission trip

  730. with Evan Alexander

  731. if he didn't tell you

  732. where you were going?

  733. And yet,

  734. that's exactly what

  735. Abraham is facing here.

  736. God called him to step out

  737. towards the invisible.

  738. We're back to Hebrews 11, 1

  739. which says,

  740. Now faith is the assurance

  741. of things hoped for,

  742. the conviction of things not seen.

  743. For by it the people of old

  744. received their commendation.

  745. By faith we understand

  746. that the universe was created

  747. by the word of God

  748. so that what is seen

  749. was not made out of things

  750. that are visible.

  751. From Genesis to Revelation,

  752. it's all been about Jesus Christ.

  753. Today, on this side of the cross,

  754. we look back by faith

  755. on the finished work

  756. of Jesus Christ

  757. and what he has done.

  758. And if we put our faith in him,

  759. we are saved.

  760. But in the Old Testament days,

  761. what about Abel?

  762. What about Enoch?

  763. What about Noah and Sarah

  764. and Isaac and Jacob

  765. and Joseph and Moses?

  766. And Abraham and the rest?

  767. What about all of them?

  768. Well, they too were commended

  769. by faith,

  770. looking forward to the cross,

  771. looking forward to the promises of God,

  772. looking at it from afar off,

  773. but by faith,

  774. trusting and believing.

  775. You see,

  776. we're either commended

  777. or condemned.

  778. Unbelief condemns us.

  779. But belief,

  780. faith,

  781. through that,

  782. we are saved

  783. and we are commended.

  784. Hebrews 11,

  785. 8 and 10

  786. just reminds us

  787. that Abraham

  788. was justified

  789. by faith,

  790. not works.

  791. But having been justified

  792. by faith,

  793. we see his works.

  794. If we add Hebrews 11,

  795. 1 through 3,

  796. end with Hebrews 11,

  797. 8 through 10,

  798. it tells us

  799. Abraham went out.

  800. He didn't know

  801. where he was going,

  802. but he did so

  803. with assurance

  804. of things hoped for.

  805. He did so,

  806. he possessed a conviction

  807. of things not seen.

  808. He trusted in the one

  809. who called him

  810. more than he trusted

  811. in his own eyes.

  812. Can I just pause right there

  813. and say in this day

  814. of artificial intelligence,

  815. AI and all the bit,

  816. it would help us

  817. to remember

  818. that we need to trust

  819. what God says.

  820. We need to trust

  821. what God shows us

  822. in his word

  823. even more

  824. than what our eyes

  825. may see.

  826. Because our eyes

  827. will deceive us.

  828. We have to hold

  829. to God's word.

  830. We have to hear

  831. and we have to believe.

  832. Even when we're believing

  833. in that which we cannot see.

  834. There was a man

  835. who came to visit

  836. the doctor

  837. and he was frantically

  838. running around

  839. in that waiting room

  840. making the staff nervous

  841. and they finally

  842. went back

  843. and told the doctor,

  844. you've got to see this man.

  845. We don't know

  846. what to do with him.

  847. He's here.

  848. He didn't have an appointment

  849. but he wants to see you

  850. and he says

  851. that he is invisible

  852. and he needs help.

  853. Can you imagine

  854. a guy showing up

  855. saying he's invisible?

  856. What do we do doctor?

  857. The doctor said

  858. well it's easy.

  859. Tell him we cannot see him.

  860. In the same way

  861. Abraham could have said

  862. I don't see it Lord.

  863. It's invisible.

  864. I can't see what you're describing.

  865. There's no proof

  866. but instead

  867. God spoke

  868. and by faith

  869. Abraham believed.

  870. His confidence

  871. was in the one

  872. whom he heard

  873. who is faithful

  874. who is worthy

  875. to be followed

  876. more than even

  877. what he could see

  878. with his own eyes.

  879. Why?

  880. He was looking forward

  881. to the city

  882. that has foundations

  883. whose designer

  884. and builder

  885. is God

  886. and in that moment

  887. his priorities

  888. were completely changed.

  889. He realized

  890. he was no longer

  891. a citizen of this world

  892. but a citizen of heaven

  893. and Romans 12

  894. 2 tells us

  895. therefore

  896. do not be conformed

  897. to this world

  898. but be transformed

  899. by the renewing

  900. of your mind

  901. so that by testing

  902. you may discern

  903. what is the will of God

  904. what is the good

  905. and acceptable

  906. and perfect will.

  907. So we must hear from God.

  908. We must believe God

  909. and there's one more

  910. to finish it out.

  911. We must obey God.

  912. We must do.

  913. We hear.

  914. We believe.

  915. We do.

  916. We hear.

  917. We believe.

  918. We obey.

  919. Isn't that so simple?

  920. By faith

  921. Abraham

  922. obeyed.

  923. Again to quote

  924. Adrian Rogers

  925. my favorite preacher

  926. he said

  927. now don't tell me

  928. you have faith

  929. if you do not obey

  930. and you have to obey

  931. even when you don't understand

  932. Noah had not seen a flood

  933. but he had a word

  934. and he obeyed

  935. faith and works

  936. are power

  937. faith without works

  938. is dead

  939. true faith

  940. is more than

  941. intellectual belief

  942. it's belief

  943. with legs on it

  944. it's not just

  945. what you preach

  946. it's what you practice

  947. that counts

  948. and so

  949. I ask you

  950. are you living

  951. by what you already

  952. know in the Bible

  953. I mean

  954. God has spoken

  955. to us right

  956. are we taking

  957. what we've heard

  958. and believe it

  959. and are we

  960. are we doing it

  961. we must obey

  962. what we already know

  963. and by faith

  964. Abraham obeyed

  965. and he went out

  966. not knowing

  967. where he was going

  968. and he could have

  969. asked God

  970. he could have said

  971. hey what's the itinerary

  972. where is the facts page

  973. I want to look at all

  974. the answers

  975. to all the questions

  976. and God could have said

  977. it's none of your

  978. of your business Abram

  979. what you need to do

  980. is you need to trust me

  981. and you need to go

  982. and you need to follow

  983. you know it's not

  984. our responsibility

  985. to understand everything

  986. it's not our responsibility

  987. to have all the answers

  988. it's our responsibility

  989. to trust God

  990. and to obey him

  991. even when we can't see

  992. Abraham stepped out

  993. into the promises of God

  994. even into the unknown

  995. some of you know our story

  996. some of you don't

  997. but back in 2012

  998. I was pastoring a church

  999. and I was leading our church

  1000. through a time

  1001. of praying Luke 10 2

  1002. along with others

  1003. all across this country

1004. it was a prayer initiative

  1005. praying for workers

  1006. in the harvest

  1007. and we were focusing

  1008. on the cities

  1009. across North America

  1010. and how there needed

  1011. to be churches planted

  1012. in these cities

1013. and how there were churches

  1014. already there

1015. that needed to be revitalized

1016. and so we went through

  1017. a whole month long

  1018. season of prayer

  1019. that culminated

1020. with a final prayer service

  1021. and throughout that process

1022. and into that last night

  1023. when we were praying

1024. I heard the voice of God

  1025. speaking to me

  1026. throughout that whole process

  1027. as we prayed

1028. and it was as if God

1029. just whispered in my ear

1030. well you're willing to pray

1031. are you willing to go

  1032. you're willing to pray

1033. that God would raise up workers

  1034. for the harvest

1035. are you willing to be one

1036. are you willing to be an answer

  1037. to that prayer

1038. and with fear and trepidation

1039. we put our yes on the table

1040. God whatever you'd have us to do

  1041. we're your servants

1042. now I want to tell you something

  1043. that I believe

1044. with all my heart this morning

1045. it doesn't matter who you are

1046. doesn't matter what your situation is

  1047. if you know Jesus

  1048. doesn't matter your age

  1049. doesn't matter anything

  1050. what matters is

1051. are we living our lives

1052. with our yes on the table

  1053. you see the Christian

1054. ought to live his or her life

1055. with the yes on the table

  1056. all the time

  1057. because if our yes

1058. is not on the table

  1059. it means we're unwilling

1060. to obey what God may call us to do

1061. and so we put our yes on the table

1062. and what wound up happening

  1063. is God called us

1064. to what might as well

1065. have been a foreign land

1066. he called us to Utah

  1067. to pastor

1068. in the middle of LDS country

1069. and God put a love

  1070. in our heart

  1071. for those people

1072. in fact I just returned

  1073. as Evan alluded to

1074. I just returned from Utah

1075. and I spent a good bit of time

  1076. out there

  1077. meeting church planters

  1078. meeting those

1079. who are doing the work

1080. seeing what God is doing

  1081. and there's some exciting

  1082. stories to tell

  1083. and I did that

  1084. as the associational missionary

1085. also on behalf of our church

1086. because when God is doing

  1087. this great work

  1088. what a privilege

  1089. we might have

1090. to be a part in that

  1091. but it all begins

  1092. with our yes

  1093. being on the table

  1094. trust and obey

1095. where there's no other way

1096. to be happy in Jesus

1097. but to trust and obey

  1098. sometimes we think

1099. we have a faith problem

1100. could it be that really

  1101. what we have

  1102. is an obedience problem

1103. let me close out with this

  1104. verse 13 says

1105. these all died in faith

  1106. having seen the promises

  1107. of far off

  1108. how blessed are we

  1109. these all

  1110. all these folks

  1111. that we're reading about

  1112. in Hebrews 11

  1113. by faith

  1114. we're looking forward

1115. to the promises of God

  1116. and here we are

1117. and we are looking back

  1118. at the finished work

  1119. of Christ

  1120. and anticipating

1121. the coming of the Lord

  1122. what an exciting day

  1123. that we can live

  1124. Colossians 3 1

  1125. tells us

1126. as we live out these days

  1127. if you then

1128. have been raised with Christ

  1129. seek the things

  1130. that are above

  1131. where Christ is

1132. seated at the right hand

  1133. of God

  1134. set your mind

  1135. on things above

  1136. not on things

1137. that are on the earth

  1138. for you have died

  1139. and your life

  1140. is hidden with Christ

  1141. in God

  1142. when Christ

  1143. who is your life

  1144. appears

  1145. then you will also

  1146. appear with him

  1147. in glory

  1148. without faith

  1149. it's impossible

  1150. to please God

  1151. without faith

  1152. it's impossible

  1153. to experience

  1154. experience

  1155. victory

  1156. so we

  1157. have to turn

  1158. our eyes

  1159. upon Jesus

  1160. and look full

  1161. in his wonderful face

  1162. and the things

  1163. of earth

  1164. will grow strangely

  1165. dim

  1166. in the light

  1167. of his glory

  1168. and grace

  1169. I would tell you

  1170. this morning

1171. if you have not yet

  1172. begun your journey

  1173. of faith

  1174. if 75 year old

  1175. Abraham

  1176. or Abram

  1177. as it were

  1178. could begin

  1179. a new life

  1180. and a new walk

  1181. in Christ

  1182. then so can

  1183. we

  1184. if you're here

  1185. this morning

  1186. and you have

  1187. the assurance

  1188. that you know

  1189. that you are saved

  1190. you know the Lord

  1191. you know that

  1192. you know your

  1193. eternal destination

  1194. is set

  1195. praise God

  1196. I would invite

  1197. you to pray

  1198. right now

  1199. because in this

  1200. room there's

  1201. somebody

  1202. there's some

  1203. probably multiple

  1204. people

  1205. who are here

  1206. and you've

  1207. never trusted

  1208. in Christ

  1209. for salvation

  1210. now notice

  1211. what I'm saying

  1212. and what I'm not

  1213. I'm not saying

  1214. you haven't been

  1215. a church member

  1216. I'm not saying

  1217. you haven't served

  1218. in the church

  1219. I'm not saying

  1220. those things

  1221. I'm saying

  1222. there's never

  1223. been a time

  1224. in your life

  1225. where you said

  1226. I need a savior

  1227. and that you

  1228. called on the

  1229. Lord Jesus

  1230. to save you

  1231. would you bow

  1232. your head with me

  1233. journey of faith

  1234. begins with a

  1235. small step of

  1236. faith

  1237. God your word

  1238. says to us

  1239. that we've all

  1240. sinned and

  1241. fallen short

  1242. of your glory

  1243. but it also

  1244. says the

  1245. gift of God

  1246. is eternal

  1247. life through

  1248. Jesus Christ

  1249. our Lord

  1250. today within

  1251. the sound

  1252. of my voice

  1253. maybe there's

  1254. a man

  1255. woman

  1256. boy

  1257. girl

  1258. who's here

  1259. today

  1260. and the reality

  1261. is even though

  1262. we talked

  1263. about faith

  1264. they've never

  1265. placed their

  1266. faith in you

  1267. Lord I thank

  1268. you that you

  1269. died for our

  1270. sins

  1271. I thank you

  1272. that you were

  1273. buried

  1274. and that on the

  1275. third day you

  1276. rose again

  1277. and I thank you

  1278. that today we

  1279. can have the

  1280. confident assurance

  1281. that we will be

  1282. with you for

  1283. eternity

  1284. if we trust

  1285. in you by

  1286. faith

  1287. and call on

  1288. you to save

  1289. us

  1290. confess with

  1291. our mouth

  1292. believe in

  1293. our heart

  1294. and we

  1295. will be

  1296. saved

  1297. Lord for

  1298. whomever it

  1299. is today that

  1300. needs to pray

  1301. this I pray

  1302. that they would

  1303. just pray something

  1304. like this

  1305. Lord Jesus

  1306. I realize that

  1307. I'm a sinner

  1308. and I realize

  1309. that sin

  1310. condemns me

  1311. to death

  1312. and hell

  1313. but Jesus

  1314. thank you so

  1315. much that you

  1316. died in my

  1317. place

  1318. and I ask you

  1319. today to forgive

  1320. me

  1321. I want to

  1322. turn from

  1323. my sin

  1324. to you

  1325. make me

  1326. a new

  1327. creature

  1328. Lord

  1329. from this

  1330. point forward

  1331. I want to

  1332. begin my

  1333. walk with

  1334. you

  1335. my journey

  1336. of faith

  1337. and thank you

  1338. Jesus for

  1339. saving me

  1340. and if you

  1341. prayed that

  1342. prayer this

  1343. morning and

  1344. you believed

  1345. in your

  1346. heart that

  1347. Jesus died

  1348. for you

  1349. that he was

  1350. buried

  1351. that he rose

  1352. again

  1353. and that he

  1354. will save

  1355. then you can

  1356. know for certain

  1357. that you're a

  1358. child of God

  1359. for all of us

  1360. here Lord

  1361. I pray that

  1362. we would live

  1363. by faith

  1364. that we would

  1365. die to self

  1366. daily

  1367. and take up

  1368. our cross

  1369. and follow you

  1370. so that we

  1371. might bring

  1372. honor and

  1373. glory to

  1374. your name

  1375. and now as we

  1376. have this time

  1377. of response

  1378. Lord may we

  1379. respond in

  1380. worship

  1381. may we respond

  1382. to whatever

  1383. you're saying

  1384. to us

  1385. as we hear

  1386. you

  1387. may we

  1388. believe

  1389. and may we

  1390. do

  1391. may we

  1392. obey

  1393. in Jesus

  1394. name we

  1395. pray

  1396. amen

  1397. let's stand

  1398. as we have

  1399. a time of

  1400. response
