  1. I want to start off with just kind of an observation and a question that maybe some of you can relate with or at least have heard.

  2. ! Has anyone ever heard someone say something along the lines?

  3. Now again, I'm not saying you have said this. I'm saying maybe you've heard somebody say this.

  4. Something along the lines, well, I don't really care for the Old Testament.

  5. There's too much violence there. I prefer the New Testament.

  6. In the New Testament, God is more loving than the Old Testament.

  7. In the Old Testament, He's quick to judge and swift to justice.

  8. In the New Testament, He's much more lenient and forgiving and patient with us.

  9. Has anybody ever heard somebody say that?

  10. I think we've all heard people say that.

  11. A lot of times we start comparing God of the Old Testament to the God of the New Testament as there's somebody different.

  12. And we start thinking of it kind of along the lines of our parents when they become grandparents.

  13. You know, as parents, they didn't let us get away with very much.

  14. But for some reason, my kids can get away with so much.

  15. I don't know how many times I've said, I would have never gotten away with that.

  16. I would never have been able to do that.

  17. And if we're not careful, sometimes when we start reading God's Word and we start hearing other people say things about God, that's where our mind can often go.

  18. We start telling ourselves these different things.

  19. The problem with this thinking when it comes to God is it's not true.

  20. In fact, it would be heretical to say that God is changing through our time.

  21. We believe the Bible clearly teaches the immutability of God, meaning that He doesn't change.

  22. His character never changes.

  23. His promises never change.

  24. His nature never changes.

  25. His love never changes.

  26. He is perfect.

  27. He is God.

  28. That is who He is.

  29. In fact, when we look at different passages, for example, in James chapter 1, we're told,

    James 1 chapter mention

  30. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.

  31. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

  32. Next week, when we get into Hebrews chapter 13 and finish up the book of Hebrews next week, we're going to see Hebrews 13.8,

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  33. where it says Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

  34. However, understanding the immutability of God will be very helpful as we take a look at this week's passage,

  35. as we understand the tail end of Hebrews chapter 12 here, making our way into the final chapter.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  36. And so if you have a copy of God's Word, I want to invite you to follow along with me.

  37. Open up to Hebrews chapter 12 and follow along as we read verses 18 through 29.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  38. This is what the Word of the Lord says.

  39. It says,

  40. Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said,

  41. I tremble with fear.

  42. But you have come to Mount Zion, and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering,

  43. and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all,

  44. and to the spirits of righteousness made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant,

  45. and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

  46. See that you do not refuse him who is speaking.

  47. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth,

  48. much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven.

  49. At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised.

  50. Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens.

  51. This phrase, yet once more, indicates the removal of things that are shaken.

  52. That is, things that have been made in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain.

  53. Therefore, let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken,

  54. and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and all,

  55. for our God is a consuming fire.

  56. Now I believe the main idea the author is trying to communicate to us from this passage

  57. is that we serve a holy and just God.

  58. His holiness and justice prevents sin from coming into his presence,

  59. but Jesus makes a way.

  60. And so my hope and prayer, the main thing that I want us to see today

  61. is that God is still holy and perfect.

  62. Our sin still separates us from him,

  63. but Jesus still makes a way.

  64. And so this understanding will lead us to a heart of thankfulness

  65. and a heart of worship.

  66. And so to help us understand this this morning,

  67. I want us to begin by answering a very important question.

  68. I want us to start by answering a very important question

  69. that we must all be able to answer in our lives,

  70. and it is this.

  71. How can we confidently approach God?

  72. How can we confidently approach God?

  73. And we see this from verses 18 through 24 that we just read.

  74. And in here you have the tale of two mountains.

  75. You have this understanding of Mount Sinai,

  76. and then you also have the understanding of Mount Zion.

  77. And Mount Sinai, to understand this,

  78. to understand what the author is trying to communicate to us here

  79. in Hebrews chapter 12 about Mount Sinai,

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  80. we really must go back to Exodus chapter 19 to understand this.

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  81. In fact, I would encourage you this afternoon,

  82. as we leave here, go back and read Exodus 19,

  83. and then in light of that, read through Exodus 12.

  84. But as we read in Exodus 19,

  85. Moses was going to Sinai,

  86. and he gave strict rules as to what should take place

  87. when God appears there.

  88. They were told,

  89. do not go near the mountain.

  90. Don't even approach it,

  91. not even to the edge of it.

  92. And if someone does,

  93. then they will be put to death.

  94. Also, there will be an earthquake.

  95. A thick cloud will circle it,

  96. and there will be thunder and lightning,

  97. the sound of trumpets,

  98. and the Lord will descend as fire with great smoke.

  99. And so there was much to do about this.

  100. In all of this,

  101. God was explaining and establishing very clearly

  102. in their hearts that he is a holy God.

  103. He is righteous.

  104. He is perfect.

  105. We don't treat him casually.

  106. We don't talk about him flippantly.

  107. We come to him understanding who he is,

  108. that he is God and we are not.

  109. They caught a glimpse of his glory,

  110. and it caused them to better understand

  111. his holiness and their sinfulness.

  112. It says,

  113. if even a beast touches the mountain,

  114. it shall be stoned.

  115. What we are to see from this is

  116. that because of our sin,

  117. God is unapproachable.

  118. Because of our sin,

  119. God is unapproachable.

  120. In our sinfulness,

  121. we cannot come into the presence of God.

  122. We,

  123. because of our sin,

  124. can't approach a holy and perfect God.

  125. But there's another mountain in this story.

  126. There's another mountain that we must consider,

  127. Mount Zion.

  128. And the author has let us know

  129. that they are coming to a different mountain.

  130. Mount Zion,

  131. that represents God's dwelling.

  132. The difference now is that this mountain,

  133. at this mountain,

  134. he is approachable.

  135. He is no less holy,

  136. no less just,

  137. no less righteous.

  138. But here on this mountain,

  139. there's a picture of joy.

  140. There's a picture of singing.

  141. We're told that the angels are in festal gathering.

  142. There's now a picture of celebration.

  143. Celebration for those who are enrolled in heaven,

  144. it says in verse 23.

  145. There's a role written in the Lamb's book of life.

  146. And because of Jesus,

  147. our names can be written on this role.

  148. That's why we sing,

  149. when the role is called up yonder,

  150. I'll be what?

  151. Be there.

  152. If our names are written in the Lamb's book of life,

  153. then we will be there with Jesus.

  154. We can come into his presence,

  155. not on our own doing,

  156. but on Christ's doing.

  157. The contrast of these two mountains

  158. is not given to paint a picture of a changing God,

  159. but rather to show how God and God alone can make a way.

  160. If a person ran back to Sinai,

  161. as opposed to running to Christ,

  162. then they would be left with only animal sacrifices

  163. to stand between them and a holy God.

  164. And we already know from what the author has told us in Hebrews

  165. that it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats

  166. to take away sins.

  167. And so Michael Kruger, reflecting on this notes,

  168. he says,

  169. in effect then,

  170. to reject Christ

  171. and return to the old covenant

  172. would be attempting to draw near to God

  173. in one's own strength

  174. and one's own merits.

  175. This would enslave a person to law keeping

  176. as a basis for their acceptance,

  177. which inevitably would lead to a lack of assurance

  178. and peace.

  179. We don't go back and try to do this on our own.

  180. We don't look back and say,

  181. you know what?

  182. Jesus, what you did was great,

  183. but I need to add to that a little bit.

  184. We don't look back and say,

  185. you know what?

  186. Thank you, Jesus, for what you did,

  187. but I need to make sure that I keep doing this

  188. and keep living this life

  189. so that I can keep having acceptance.

  190. acceptance.

  191. That's not understanding the gospel.

  192. What this is very clearly showing is

  193. there's only one way to the Father,

  194. and that is through Jesus,

  195. by placing our faith and our trust in Him.

  196. And if we're trying to do this on our own,

  197. if we're trying to live a good enough life

  198. to be accepted,

  199. it will never, ever work.

  200. And so what this does,

  201. Mount Zion,

  202. I may remind you of how unholy you are,

  203. but Mount Zion is where you find

  204. that you have been made perfect.

  205. And so how is it

  206. that the same God can be so terrifying

  207. and unapproachable at Mount Sinai

  208. and be so welcoming and approachable at Zion?

  209. Well, the answer is found in verse 24.

  210. The answer is found in verse 24.

  211. In fact, all of this,

  212. what we're talking about,

  213. comes to a head as we look at verse 24.

  214. All of this is possible in Jesus

  215. because He is the mediator of a new covenant.

  216. And to the sprinkled blood

  217. that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

  218. The reason that we, sinful people,

  219. can come into the presence of a holy and just God

  220. is because Jesus is our mediator.

  221. If we are believers,

  222. if we are followers of Christ,

  223. He is our mediator,

  224. and that is the only way

  225. that we can come into the presence of a holy God

  226. because He, Christ,

  227. has given us His righteousness.

  228. And so that when God looks at us,

  229. He no longer sees that sin and that shame,

  230. but He sees His Son's perfect and holy life

  231. given in our place.

  232. And so how does Jesus' blood

  233. speak a better word than the blood of Abel?

  234. How does Jesus' blood speak a better word

  235. than the blood of Abel?

  236. Do you remember the story of Cain and Abel?

  237. Going back to Genesis chapter 4,

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  238. in this story,

  239. Cain and Abel are both making offerings to the Lord.

  240. Abel gives of the first fruit,

  241. the firstborn.

  242. He gives the very best that he has

  243. as an offering to God.

  244. And Cain gives some of the leftovers.

  245. He still gives the offering there,

  246. but he gives out of the leftovers,

  247. not out of the first.

  248. And so God, in this,

  249. He accepts Abel's offering

  250. and He rejects Cain's.

  251. Well, of course, this makes Cain upset.

  252. And so Cain goes out

  253. and then kills his brother Abel.

  254. And so right after this takes place,

  255. in Genesis chapter 4,

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  256. we're able to see God's interaction with Cain.

  257. And he comes to him in verse 10 of Genesis 4,

  258. and he says,

  259. And the Lord said,

  260. What have you done?

  261. The voice of your brother's blood

  262. is crying to me from the ground.

  263. And so what we see here

  264. is that Abel's blood is crying out to God

  265. from the ground,

  266. is crying out to him.

  267. Abel's blood cried out from the ground

  268. for vengeance,

  269. for judgment,

  270. for justice.

  271. But now Jesus' blood cries out

  272. that the judgment,

  273. the wrath,

  274. the justice of God

  275. has been perfectly satisfied.

  276. And we hear clearly the love,

  277. the grace,

  278. and mercy of a God

  279. who is perfect in His love,

  280. who is perfect in His justice,

  281. who is perfect in His mercy,

  282. who is perfect in His righteous wrath.

  283. At the cross,

  284. we see God's justice,

  285. His wrath,

  286. His mercy,

  287. His grace,

  288. His love,

  289. all coming together.

  290. And so the voice we hear

  291. calling from the cross

  292. is one of God's riches

  293. at Christ's expense.

  294. The message we hear at the cross

  295. is of God's grace and mercy.

  296. The question we must all answer is this,

  297. have we received this call?

  298. Have we put our faith

  299. and our trust in this call?

  300. Are we still going

  301. to try to do this on our own?

  302. Are we trying to be good enough?

  303. Or are we boldly

  304. and confidently

  305. coming before God

  306. not because of what we have done,

  307. but because of what Christ has done for us?

  308. And so as we answer this question,

  309. how can we confidently approach God,

  310. we see the author giving us

  311. a very important warning here.

  312. We see the author bringing this home for us

  313. for just a moment where he says this.

  314. Basically what he's saying,

  315. after understanding this,

  316. he says,

  317. don't miss this.

  318. Don't miss this.

  319. Don't miss the gospel.

  320. Don't miss God's grace.

  321. Don't miss this understanding.

  322. Verse 25 says this.

  323. He says,

  324. See that you do not refuse him

  325. who is speaking.

  326. For if they did not escape

  327. when they refused him

  328. who warned them on earth,

  329. much less will we escape

  330. if we reject him

  331. who warns from heaven.

  332. This passage is giving us

  333. a strong word of caution.

  334. The warning lets us know

  335. that we must not neglect

  336. the gospel of Christ

  337. and refuse to hear God's word.

  338. is a direct warning

  339. that we must take to heart.

  340. That we must not dismiss

  341. but genuinely take to heart.

  342. You see,

  343. throughout Hebrews,

  344. as we've noted,

  345. the author has been clear

  346. that God has spoken

  347. through his son.

  348. In the very first chapter of Hebrews,

  349. we're told very clearly

  350. that God has spoken to us

  351. through his son.

  352. And this saving message

  353. is not one that we can ignore.

  354. And so why is this so important?

  355. Because if this is ignored,

  356. if we don't take seriously

  357. what God has done for us,

  358. if we fail to understand

  359. that we are all sinners

  360. and that we need Jesus,

  361. then judgment will come.

  362. To help us see this,

  363. the author brings our attention

  364. back to Mount Sinai another time.

  365. Despite all of the frightening sights

  366. and sounds

  367. that the people experienced there

  368. as God descended on Mount Sinai,

  369. the people refused.

  370. It says here,

  371. they refused him

  372. who warned them on earth

  373. and God was faithful

  374. to his promise

  375. and they did not escape

  376. his judgment.

  377. He then brings this home

  378. for the original audience

  379. and I think for us today as well.

  380. His argument is simple.

  381. If God held people accountable

  382. when on earth,

  383. when they were warned here on earth,

  384. how much more will he hold us accountable

  385. when warned from heaven?

  386. You see, the passage tells us

  387. there will be a time

  388. when our faith is made very clear.

  389. It says in verse 26 and 27,

  390. At that time,

  391. his voice shook,

  392. but now he has promised,

  393. yet once more,

  394. I will shake not only the earth

  395. but also the heavens.

  396. This phrase,

  397. yet once more,

  398. indicates the removal of things

  399. that are shaken,

  400. that is things that have been made,

  401. in order that the things

  402. that cannot be shaken

  403. may remain.

  404. He is saying that there was a shaking

  405. at Mount Sinai,

  406. but there will be a greater shaking

  407. when we must make sure

  408. that our foundation,

  409. what we are building our lives on

  410. as believers,

  411. is secure in Christ Jesus.

  412. There was a shaking at Mount Sinai.

  413. There's going to be a greater shaking

  414. where we must make sure

  415. that our salvation,

  416. that our foundation in this life

  417. is built on Christ Jesus.

  418. But here's the thing about foundations.

  419. Foundations.

  420. Foundations are not easily seen.

  421. Foundations are hard for us

  422. to see at times.

  423. In fact,

  424. nobody goes into

  425. a building of historical nature

  426. like the Biltmore House

  427. or the Sistine Chapel

  428. or Buckingham Palace.

  429. Nobody walks into these iconic places

  430. and says,

  431. wow,

  432. look at the foundation of this place.

  433. Nobody says that

  434. because you can't see the foundation.

  435. You can't see what it's built on.

  436. You see the fruit of what it's built on.

  437. You see the building that it's built on.

  438. But you can't see the foundation itself.

  439. It's hard to tell.

  440. It's hard to see the foundation.

  441. Yet,

  442. without a firm foundation,

  443. the building will never last.

  444. And the truth of the matter is

  445. that this is often the case

  446. in our lives as well.

  447. Each and every one of us,

  448. if enough people are looking at our lives,

  449. if enough people are watching us,

  450. each and every one of us

  451. can probably do the right thing

  452. most of the time.

  453. We can look the part

  454. if everybody's looking at us.

  455. We know the right things to say.

  456. We know how we should act.

  457. So,

  458. if everybody's looking at us,

  459. we can look the part.

  460. But that's not what we're talking about.

  461. Salvation doesn't come

  462. from fooling everyone around you

  463. by looking the part.

  464. It comes from placing your faith

  465. and trust in Jesus

  466. to do what you couldn't do.

  467. You see,

  468. Jesus gave a very similar warning

  469. at the end of the Sermon on the Mount.

  470. Jesus was giving this message

  471. to a group of people

  472. that were showing interest in Him.

  473. At the Sermon on the Mount,

  474. Jesus is preaching

  475. to all of these

  476. that are gathered there to listen.

  477. And all of these people

  478. are interested in Him.

  479. All of these people

  480. want to hear what Jesus has to say.

  481. There's a lot of interest

  482. that they're showing in Jesus.

  483. And so,

  484. He was speaking to a group of people

  485. that claim to love Him

  486. and His words,

  487. that on the outside,

  488. everyone's looks the same.

  489. And so,

  490. He doesn't look in one direction

  491. they're preaching

  492. and say,

  493. you know what?

  494. This group of people,

  495. y'all built your house

  496. on the firm foundation.

  497. You built your house

  498. on the rock.

  499. You're the ones

  500. that when the storm comes

  501. and when everything happens,

  502. your foundation

  503. will remain secure.

  504. He doesn't look out

  505. at one group of people

  506. and say this

  507. and then walk over

  508. to another group of people

  509. who are living sinful lives.

  510. And I'm not saying

  511. you're living sinful lives over here.

  512. I'm just making a distinction.

  513. He doesn't go over

  514. to another group

  515. and say,

  516. well,

  517. you're building your house

  518. on the sand.

  519. Your foundation is not secure.

  520. When the storm comes,

  521. your house will fall.

  522. He's looking out

  523. at a group of people

  524. that on the outside,

  525. everybody looks the same.

  526. Everybody appears

  527. to be the same.

  528. He does

  529. what every preacher

  530. in the world

  531. does every week.

  532. He looks out

  533. at a group of people

  534. that are there

  535. because they choose

  536. to be there.

  537. That listen

  538. to the words of God

  539. and on the outside,

  540. they look identical.

  541. And He says,

  542. the wise person

  543. hears these words of mine

  544. and does them.

  545. And the foolish person

  546. hears these words of mine

  547. and does not do them.

  548. Both have come

  549. to hear the word,

  550. but only one

  551. actually does them.

  552. You see,

  553. there's going to be

  554. another shaking.

  555. A storm

  556. where our foundation

  557. will be put to the test.

  558. If we reject

  559. the message

  560. of the gospel,

  561. then we will rightly

  562. experience

  563. the wrath of God.

  564. And so as your pastor,

  565. I urge you

  566. to clearly hear

  567. the message

  568. of the gospel.

  569. But not just hear it,

  570. but believe it.

  571. To trust it.

  572. Don't try to

  573. look the part.

  574. Don't try to

  575. fool yourself

  576. or fool those around you

  577. by looking the part.

  578. Because here's the thing,

  579. you're going to be able

  580. to fool me pretty easily.

  581. You're going to be able

  582. to fool others

  583. around you pretty easily.

  584. You may even at times

  585. be able to fool yourself.

  586. But what we're saying

  587. is if you're putting

  588. your faith

  589. and your trust

  590. and doing enough,

  591. being enough,

  592. going back to living

  593. a good enough life

  594. and trying to

  595. do it yourself

  596. and not looking

  597. to Jesus,

  598. then this warning

  599. is for you.

  600. You've got to put

  601. your faith

  602. and your trust

  603. in Him.

  604. So the question

  605. we must ask,

  606. do we believe this?

  607. If this is something

  608. that you need

  609. to get right

  610. and get done,

  611. then make sure

  612. that it happens today.

  613. None of us

  614. are promised tomorrow.

  615. So let us put our faith

  616. and our trust in Jesus.

  617. But in addition

  618. to this warning,

  619. we see the results

  620. of a life

  621. that is fixed on Jesus.

  622. And so we're answering

  623. the question,

  624. how can we

  625. confidently approach God?

  626. And the only answer

  627. to that is if Jesus Christ

  628. is our mediator.

  629. The author says,

  630. hey,

  631. don't miss this.

  632. Don't try to skip

  633. this part.

  634. Don't miss the gospel.

  635. But then what we finally see

  636. is worship

  637. is the result

  638. of a relationship

  639. with Jesus.

  640. Worship

  641. is the product

  642. of a relationship

  643. with Jesus.

  644. Listen to verses 28

  645. and 29.

  646. Therefore,

  647. let us be grateful

  648. for receiving a kingdom

  649. that cannot be shaken.

  650. And thus,

  651. let us offer to God

  652. acceptable worship

  653. with reverence

  654. and awe

  655. for our God

  656. is a consuming fire.

  657. The first thing

  658. that the author

  659. tells us here

  660. in this passage

  661. is understanding

  662. who Jesus is

  663. and what he's done

  664. for us

  665. will lead

  666. to a life

  667. of thankfulness.

  668. It will lead us

  669. to being thankful.

  670. And thankfulness

  671. is the mark

  672. of a believer.

  673. And a lack

  674. of thankfulness

  675. is a mark

  676. of an unbeliever.

  677. If you think about it,

  678. when we truly

  679. understand the gospel

  680. message

  681. that we are sinners

  682. and that there's nothing

  683. that we can do

  684. to save ourselves

  685. and that God

  686. left the glory

  687. of heaven,

  688. lived the life

  689. we couldn't live,

  690. died the death

  691. that we deserve,

  692. then we can't

  693. truly understand

  694. that without being

  695. thankful to God.

  696. Without saying,

  697. praise God,

  698. you did

  699. what I couldn't do.

  700. I would have

  701. no hope

  702. outside of you.

  703. Thank you,

  704. Jesus,

  705. for the blood.

  706. Thank you

  707. for what you

  708. have accomplished

  709. for me.

  710. And so,

  711. understanding this

  712. leads to a life

  713. of thankfulness.

  714. But the next thing

  715. the author tells us

  716. to do

  717. is to worship.

  718. And I also believe

  719. that the order

  720. is significant here.

  721. We're thankful

  722. for this gospel message.

  723. We're thankful

  724. for what it means

  725. for us.

  726. And out of that

  727. thankful heart,

  728. we understand

  729. that we naturally

  730. move to worship God.

  731. And so,

  732. worship is the result

  733. of a relationship

  734. with Jesus.

  735. Worship is the result

  736. of a relationship

  737. with Him.

  738. And when you look

  739. at the creation,

  740. this all makes sense.

  741. When you go back

  742. to God's creation

  743. back in Genesis,

  744. this makes sense.

  745. When God created

  746. Adam and Eve,

  747. we are told that

  748. He placed Adam and Eve

  749. in the garden

  750. to work it

  751. and to keep it.

  752. To work it

  753. and to keep it.

  754. John Salehammer,

  755. a Hebrew scholar,

  756. he notes that

  757. these same words

  758. that are translated here

  759. as to work it

  760. and keep it

  761. are used in other places

  762. typically

  763. in the life

  764. of the priest

  765. in the temple

  766. when they are working

  767. and keeping

  768. in the temple.

  769. And so,

  770. in those places,

  771. oftentimes,

  772. it's translated

  773. as worship

  774. and obeying.

  775. And so,

  776. what we see

  777. from the very beginning

  778. is that we were created

  779. to work it

  780. and to keep it

  781. to worship

  782. and obey God.

  783. We were all created

  784. for worship.

  785. Sin, however,

  786. destroyed our relationship

  787. with God

  788. and we began

  789. to worship

  790. other things.

  791. Now,

  792. we still did

  793. what we were created.

  794. We still do

  795. what we were created for.

  796. We worship,

  797. but now,

  798. the object

  799. of our worship

  800. changes.

  801. Romans 1, 25

  802. says

  803. that we have

  804. exchanged the truth

  805. about God

  806. for a lie

  807. and worshipped

  808. and served

  809. the creature

  810. rather than

  811. the creator

  812. who is blessed

  813. forever.

  814. You see,

  815. we all worship.

  816. The question

  817. that we must ask

  818. is what

  819. or whom

  820. are we worshiping?

  821. And oftentimes,

  822. in our minds,

  823. we tend

  824. to think

  825. of worship

  826. in only terms

  827. of singing

  828. or what we do

  829. when we come

  830. to church

  831. church.

  832. There's no doubt

  833. that when we sing,

  834. when we open up

  835. our hymnals

  836. and we sing

  837. praises to God,

  838. that is worship.

  839. No doubt about that.

  840. But worship

  841. should be an act

  842. of our lives.

  843. We should be giving

  844. our lives to God

  845. in worship.

  846. Years ago

  847. when I was a

  848. youth pastor,

  849. and that's hard

  850. for me to say sometimes,

  851. years ago

  852. when I was a youth pastor,

  853. it seems like

  854. just yesterday,

  855. but years ago

  856. when I was a youth pastor,

  857. one of the things

  858. that we did

  859. every single fall

  860. is we took the kids

  861. on a retreat

  862. and we called

  863. this retreat

  864. Live to Worship.

  865. And the whole point

  866. of this retreat

  867. was for us

  868. to see our lives

  869. as an act

  870. of worship.

  871. Sometimes I would have

  872. Clay come

  873. and lead worship,

  874. lead songs.

  875. Sometimes we intentionally

  876. didn't do that

  877. because we wanted

  878. to make the point

  879. very clear

  880. that life

  881. is worship.

  882. And so what we

  883. understand is that

  884. as believers,

  885. the way that we

  886. interact at work

  887. is worship.

  888. The way that we

  889. do our jobs

  890. should be worship.

  891. The way that we

  892. love our spouse

  893. should be worship.

  894. The way that we

  895. raise our kids

  896. should be worship.

  897. The way that we

  898. honor our father

  899. and mother

  900. should be worship.

  901. The way that we

  902. drive our cars,

  903. the way that we

  904. live our lives,

  905. everything

  906. should be worship

  907. to God.

  908. It's not something

  909. we turn on

  910. and we turn off.

  911. But during this

  912. retreat one year

  913. at Lived Worship,

  914. we had everyone

  915. take an idolatry

  916. detector test,

  917. an idolatry

  918. detection test.

  919. It went along

  920. with a Bible study

  921. that some of our

  922. youth were doing

  923. at the time

  924. and we thought

  925. it would be a

  926. great thing

  927. for everybody

  928. to do.

  929. And so what we

  930. did was we had

  931. everybody in the room

  932. and we started

  933. asking some

  934. fill-in-the-blank

  935. responses and

  936. some questions

  937. that would help

  938. us to see

  939. what it is

  940. that we put

  941. an emphasis

  942. on in our

  943. lives.

  944. And so here's

  945. a few of those

  946. things that we

  947. asked them.

  948. The first was

  949. a fill-in-the-blank

  950. and it was this,

  951. the thing I'd be

  952. most worried

  953. about losing

  954. is blank.

  955. The thing that

  956. I'd be most

  957. worried about losing

  958. is blank.

  959. What would you

  960. put in that blank?

  961. What would you

  962. put in that spot?

  963. The next was

  964. the thing I'd

  965. be most worried

  966. about never

  967. attaining is

  968. blank.

  969. What is it that

  970. you're giving

  971. your life to

  972. getting?

  973. What is it that

  974. you're trying to

  975. attain in this

  976. life that you're

  977. spending all of

  978. your time and all

  979. of your resources

  980. on?

  981. What would you

  982. put in that

  983. fill-in-the-blank?

  984. The question

  985. that we had them

  986. ask is throughout

  987. your life,

  988. what have you

  989. been most willing

  990. to sacrifice

  991. for?

  992. You see,

  993. worship and

  994. sacrifice always

  995. go hand in

  996. hand.

  997. You're willing

  998. to sacrifice

  999. to gain whatever

  1000. is most valuable

  1001. to you.

  1002. You're willing

  1003. to give things

  1004. up if there's

  1005. something that

  1006. you're going

  1007. to gain that

  1008. is better than

  1009. what you're

  1010. giving up.

  1011. We're all

  1012. willing to

  1013. sacrifice in

  1014. order to gain

  1015. something that

  1016. we see as

  1017. more valuable.

  1018. And so,

  1019. how would you

  1020. answer that

  1021. question?

  1022. Another one,

  1023. what has made

  1024. you most bitter

  1025. in life?

  1026. Bitterness almost

  1027. always points to

  1028. something that has

  1029. a great weight

  1030. in our life

  1031. that we've missed

  1032. out on.

  1033. What is it that

  1034. we're holding

  1035. on to saying,

  1036. if this just

  1037. hadn't happened,

  1038. if this person

  1039. hadn't said this,

  1040. if they hadn't

  1041. done that,

  1042. then my life

  1043. would be great.

  1044. Is there something

  1045. that you're holding

  1046. on to that is

  1047. causing this

  1048. bitterness?

  1049. Or here's a

  1050. tough one.

  1051. What are you

  1052. willing to lie

  1053. for?

  1054. What are you

  1055. willing to lie

  1056. for?

  1057. Most of us

  1058. don't lie

  1059. for the fun

  1060. of it.

  1061. Most of us

  1062. understand that's

  1063. not a good

  1064. thing.

  1065. Usually,

  1066. when you lie,

  1067. it's because

  1068. you're protecting

  1069. an idol,

  1070. like your

  1071. reputation

  1072. or your

  1073. comfort.

  1074. So what is it

  1075. that you're

  1076. willing to

  1077. lie for?

  1078. And then

  1079. finally,

  1080. a question to

  1081. think about

  1082. is this,

  1083. where do you

  1084. turn for

  1085. comfort?

  1086. comfort?

  1087. Where do you

  1088. turn for

  1089. comfort?

  1090. If the day

  1091. has been long

  1092. and hard

  1093. and stressful

  1094. and it's just

  1095. one of those

  1096. days,

  1097. where do you

  1098. turn to

  1099. make it

  1100. better?

  1101. Where do you

  1102. turn to

  1103. take your

  1104. mind off

  1105. of the

  1106. difficulties,

  1107. the stress,

  1108. and the

  1109. heartache

  1110. that you

  1111. have been

  1112. experiencing?

  1113. And so as

  1114. we answer

  1115. these questions,

  1116. as we fill

  1117. in these

  1118. blanks,

  1119. it sheds

  1120. some light

  1121. onto the

  1122. things that

  1123. are most

  1124. important

  1125. to us.

  1126. These are

  1127. all tough

  1128. questions that

  1129. ultimately

  1130. are difficult

  1131. for us

  1132. to answer.

  1133. But really

  1134. what this

  1135. all boils

  1136. down to

  1137. is this,

  1138. is you

  1139. will worship,

  1140. you will

  1141. go after,

  1142. you will

  1143. seek,

  1144. you will

  1145. go and

  1146. try to

  1147. find whatever

  1148. it is that

  1149. is most

  1150. valuable to

  1151. you.

  1152. You will

  1153. pursue,

  1154. you will

  1155. go after

  1156. your greatest

  1157. treasure.

  1158. And so

  1159. ultimately

  1160. what this

  1161. is showing

  1162. us is that

  1163. Jesus is

  1164. our greatest

  1165. treasure.

  1166. Understanding

  1167. who he is,

  1168. that he's

  1169. the only

  1170. one that

  1171. can bring

  1172. us into

  1173. the presence

  1174. of a holy

  1175. and just

  1176. and perfect

  1177. God,

  1178. understanding

  1179. that there

  1180. is no

  1181. other way

  1182. apart from

  1183. Jesus,

  1184. will help

  1185. us to see

  1186. him as

  1187. our greatest

  1188. treasure.

  1189. And as we

  1190. see Jesus

  1191. as our

  1192. greatest

  1193. treasure,

  1194. then all

  1195. of a sudden

  1196. our lives

  1197. fall in line.

  1198. All of a

  1199. sudden we

  1200. go after,

  1201. we pursue,

  1202. we worship

  1203. him because

  1204. he is of

  1205. utmost value

  1206. to us.

  1207. And so

  1208. the question

  1209. that we

  1210. must all

  1211. ask is,

  1212. what is it

  1213. that you're

  1214. going after?

  1215. Who is it

  1216. that you're

  1217. seeking?

  1218. Have you

  1219. placed your

  1220. faith and

  1221. your trust

  1222. in Jesus

  1223. to do

  1224. what only

  1225. he could

  1226. do to

  1227. save you

  1228. from your

  1229. sins?

  1230. Father,

  1231. we thank

  1232. you so

  1233. very much

  1234. for this

  1235. passage,

  1236. Lord,

  1237. a passage

  1238. that causes

  1239. us to

  1240. look to

  1241. the past

  1242. as we

  1243. look to

  1244. the future,

  1245. a passage

  1246. that calls

  1247. us to

  1248. look at

  1249. what it

  1250. is that

  1251. you've done

  1252. for us,

  1253. how there's

  1254. no hope

  1255. on our

  1256. own,

  1257. we can't

  1258. do this

  1259. on our

  1260. own,

  1261. we can't

  1262. live a

  1263. good enough

  1264. life,

  1265. we can't

  1266. do all

  1267. of these

  1268. things,

  1269. Lord,

  1270. but you

  1271. made a

  1272. way.

  1273. And so,

  1274. Lord,

  1275. I pray

  1276. that there's

  1277. someone here

  1278. today,

  1279. maybe it's

  1280. their first

  1281. time that

  1282. they've ever

  1283. been in

  1284. this service,

  1285. maybe it's

  1286. their thousandth

  1287. time,

  1288. but maybe

  1289. they're realizing

  1290. today for

  1291. the first

  1292. time that

  1293. they've been

  1294. trying to

  1295. save

  1296. themselves,

  1297. they've been

  1298. putting their

  1299. confidence,

  1300. their trust,

  1301. in being good

  1302. enough,

  1303. doing enough

  1304. good,

  1305. coming to

  1306. church enough,

  1307. tithing enough,

  1308. praying enough,

  1309. doing all of

  1310. these things,

  1311. and today

  1312. they realize

  1313. that the only

  1314. hope we have

  1315. in this life

  1316. and the life

  1317. to come is

  1318. in the precious

  1319. blood of

  1320. Jesus.

  1321. So,

  1322. Lord,

  1323. help us to

  1324. see that

  1325. clearly today.

  1326. Help us to

  1327. not miss

  1328. this.

  1329. Help us not

  1330. to just skip

  1331. over this

  1332. vital truth

  1333. to our faith

  1334. and to grow

  1335. deeper into

  1336. it.

  1337. And,

  1338. Lord,

  1339. I pray that

  1340. for the rest

  1341. of us,

  1342. as we clearly

  1343. see who

  1344. you are,

  1345. as we

  1346. clearly see

  1347. what you've

  1348. done for

  1349. us,

  1350. it will lead

  1351. to a heart

  1352. that desires

  1353. to worship

  1354. you with

  1355. everything we

  1356. have.

  1357. It leads us

  1358. to a heart

  1359. that says,

  1360. Lord,

  1361. here's my

  1362. life,

  1363. take it

  1364. and use

  1365. it for

  1366. your honor

  1367. and for

  1368. your glory.

  1369. And so,

  1370. Lord,

  1371. we ask all

  1372. these things

  1373. in Jesus'

  1374. precious name.

  1375. Amen.

  1376. Amen.

  1377. I want to

  1378. invite you

  1379. to take

  1380. your

  1381. Baptist hymnal

  1382. and turn

  1383. to hymn

  1384. number

  1385. 363,

  1386. let others

  1387. see Jesus

  1388. in you.

  1389. If the

  1390. Lord is

  1391. speaking to

  1392. you this

  1393. morning,

  1394. won't you

  1395. respond as

  1396. we stand

  1397. together

  1398. and sing?
