  1. This week we're going to continue in our discipleship pathway as we continue talking about the fact that disciples grow.

  2. ! This week our passage is going to be from Romans, the end of chapter 11 and the beginning of chapter 12.

  3. And so if you have a copy of God's Word, I want to invite you to go ahead and make your way with me to Romans chapter 11, the end of the passage there.

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  4. But as you're turning to Romans chapter 11, I want you to think about something with me for just a moment.

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  5. When was the last time that you went outside and just looked up at the stars?

  6. Where you just went outside and were just amazed by God's creation?

  7. And I'm not talking about, you know, a glance up as you're driving down the road and looking out the window.

  8. But when you're at a place where there's very little light pollution, there's hardly any lights that are around, it's a clear, beautiful night.

  9. And then you just look up and think, wow, that's a lot of stars.

  10. You know, hopefully most of us at some point in our lives have done that.

  11. But as I was thinking about that this week, I was reminded of the fact that there's only a few handful of stars that we can actually see.

  12. In fact, there's only about 9,096 stars that we can see with a human eye.

  13. Now, I don't know how they came up with that number.

  14. I don't know what scientist was out there counting.

  15. Can I see that?

  16. I don't know.

  17. But apparently there's about just over 9,000 stars that we can see with a naked eye.

  18. Now, that's northern hemisphere, southern hemisphere, different times of the night.

  19. So at any one given moment, there's about 2,500 stars that we're able to see with the naked eye.

  20. But even if you are able to see all 9,000 of them at one time that we can see from Earth,

  21. that would only be a fraction of the total number of stars that are there.

  22. In fact, the fraction would be 1 in 100 quintillion number of stars that we can actually see.

  23. And I don't know about you, but numbers like this, I can't even comprehend.

  24. That's a fraction of the number of stars that scientists estimate that they're,

  25. and this is a conservative estimate,

  26. they estimate that we can see between 1 and 3 septillion stars.

  27. Now, I know you're all math wizards out there, and you know exactly what 1 septillion is.

  28. But just for those of you who may not, that is 1 with 24 zeros behind it.

  29. 1 with 24 zeros.

  30. And just a, for me, that's just a number on a piece.

  31. I can't comprehend that.

  32. And so another way to think of it is think of it like this.

  33. If you were to count to a million, just one second at a time, you know, 1, 2, 3, 4, all the way to a million,

  34. never stop, never sleep, never do anything, always one second, or counting one for every second,

  35. then it would take you roughly 11 days to count to a million.

  36. Now, if you were to count to a billion at the same rate,

  37. it would take you roughly 31 years and 8 months to count to a billion.

  38. And so now, I want you to just think of a number in your mind of what you think it would take to count to a trillion.

  39. So we have a million 11 days, a billion 31 years, 8 months.

  40. How long in your mind are you thinking right now to count to a trillion?

  41. Because it would take 32,000 years of constantly counting to get to a trillion.

  42. That's hard to understand.

  43. That's hard to comprehend.

  44. But then to think that we have 1 to 3 septillion stars, I can't even begin to comprehend that.

  45. And then each star, thinking about the energy that each star has,

  46. each star produces about, on average, the equivalent to 6 trillion atom bombs every second.

  47. I heard that in my mind.

  48. I don't know if you're like me, but I heard that in my mind immediately went,

  49. well, I wonder how long one second of the sun's energy,

  50. how long that would power Earth.

  51. With the amount of energy that we're using right now,

  52. how long could one second of the sun's energy power the Earth?

  53. So I looked it up, and apparently I'm not the only one who was wondering this,

  54. because there was an answer.

  55. And what, according to one source,

  56. one second of the sun's total output

  57. could power our modern civilization for over 500,000 years.

  58. Imagine that.

  59. One second, and let's just say, let's say they get it wrong by half.

  60. Let's say they're 250,000 years off.

  61. That's still amazing.

  62. Let's say that they were completely off,

  63. and they were 499,000 years off.

  64. If the sun's power could power Earth,

  65. the amount of that it's putting off for 1,000 years,

  66. that would be tremendous.

  67. Every second it's putting this off.

  68. And so it's amazing for us to think about.

  69. And what is crazy is that the number of known stars and galaxies

  70. is constantly increasing.

  71. Scientists are constantly finding new galaxies,

  72. finding new stars.

  73. The universe is big.

  74. In fact, it's so big it's hard to comprehend.

  75. But what is even harder to comprehend

  76. is the fact that we serve a God so powerful

  77. that He speaks that into existence.

  78. That there was nothing.

  79. God speaks, and everything is formed.

  80. More stars than we could ever imagine.

  81. More power than we could ever comprehend.

  82. More galaxies than we even know about right now.

  83. He speaks, and the worlds are formed.

  84. It's amazing for us to think about that.

  85. And so as we think about this,

  86. this is what I want you to have in mind

  87. as we read our passage of Scripture today.

  88. As we begin at the end of Romans chapter 11,

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  89. starting in verse 33,

  90. and making our way through Romans 12.

  91. I want you to think about how big God is

  92. as we consider these words.

  93. It says this,

  94. Oh, the depth and the riches

  95. and wisdom and knowledge of God.

  96. How unsearchable are His judgments

  97. and how inscrutable His ways.

  98. For who has known the mind of the Lord?

  99. Or who has been His counselor?

  100. Or who has given Him a gift

  101. that He may be repaid?

  102. For from Him and through Him

  103. and to Him are all things.

  104. To Him be glory forever. Amen.

  105. And He goes on to say,

  106. I appeal to you therefore, brothers,

  107. by the mercies of God,

  108. to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

  109. holy and acceptable to God,

  110. which is your spiritual worship.

  111. Do not be conformed to this world,

  112. but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,

  113. that by testing you may discern

  114. what is the will of God,

  115. what is good and acceptable and perfect.

  116. For by the grace given to me,

  117. I say to everyone among you,

  118. you ought not to think of himself

  119. more highly than he ought to think,

  120. but to think with sober judgment,

  121. each according to the measure of faith

  122. that God has assigned.

  123. For as in one body we have many members,

  124. and the members do not all have the same function,

  125. so we, though many,

  126. are one body in Christ,

  127. and individually members one of another.

  128. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us,

  129. let us use them.

  130. If prophecy in proportion to our faith,

  131. in service in our serving,

  132. the one who teaches in his teaching,

  133. the one who exhorts in his exhortation,

  134. the one who contributes in generosity,

  135. the one who leads with zeal,

  136. the one who acts,

  137. who does acts of mercy with cheerfulness.

  138. I believe that this passage that we see here,

  139. and we could continue reading through the end of Romans,

  140. to be quite frank,

  141. but we're going to stop here for our purposes this morning.

  142. I believe this passage shows us a great deal

  143. about what it means to grow in our relationship with the Lord.

  144. There's some key elements here that remind us

  145. of things that we need to consider

  146. as we grow in our relationship with the Lord.

  147. And so I believe this passage shows us a great deal

  148. when it comes to growing the relationship with the Lord.

  149. And to begin with,

  150. we are reminded that disciples grow by seeing God.

  151. Disciples grow by seeing God.

  152. It says,

  153. You see, verses 33 through 36 here

  154. come at a really interesting point in the book of Romans.

  155. If we were studying all the way through the book of Romans,

  156. and we got to this section of Scripture,

  157. each of you would notice something very different at this point.

  158. You would notice a change in Paul's writing.

  159. Up until this point,

  160. he has been laying out theology for us.

  161. He's been showing us over and over again

  162. the importance of knowing truth,

  163. the importance of applying truth,

  164. the importance of knowing who we are,

  165. that we're sinners,

  166. about how Jesus came,

  167. and how he fulfills the Old Testament.

  168. And now he's just talked about

  169. how the nation of Israel is grafted into this,

  170. and their part,

  171. and their role to play in this.

  172. And he's been explaining

  173. all of these theological things to us.

  174. And he gets to this point,

  175. and there's a change.

  176. In fact, James Montgomery Boyce,

  177. when he was talking about this section,

  178. he says it's like he moves into a doxology.

  179. He goes from all of this theology into worship.

  180. And the way he does this,

  181. I love how the ESV

  182. and many other English translations capture it here.

  183. And they just simply say,

  184. Oh, oh, the riches.

  185. Oh, the depth of the riches

  186. and wisdom and knowledge of God.

  187. It is a moment where they just praise God.

  188. You see, the gospel should always lead us to an O.

  189. To an O, how wonderful.

  190. Oh, how great.

  191. And so when I ask you,

  192. and I want you to consider,

  193. when was the last time

  194. that you were thinking about God,

  195. that you were thinking about salvation,

  196. that you were thinking about who you are in Christ,

  197. and just said,

  198. Oh, praise God.

  199. Oh, the depths of his goodness.

  200. Oh, how wonderful his love is.

  201. Oh, how great and powerful the God we serve is.

  202. You see, when it comes to God,

  203. the more we know about who he is,

  204. the more we grow in that relationship.

  205. As we see God more and more clearly for who he is,

  206. the deeper we grow in our trust,

  207. the deeper we grow in our faith,

  208. the deeper we grow in our obedience.

  209. We are reminded here that by seeing God,

  210. we grow in our relationship.

  211. By seeing God's greatness,

  212. we grow, and it leads us to worship him.

  213. I was listening to a song this week

  214. that was, essentially, it was singing Psalm 34.

  215. And it put Psalm 34 to music,

  216. and it was basically just singing through Psalm 34.

  217. And there was a phrase that kept coming up

  218. in this song that is actually a,

  219. just a direct quotation of Psalm 34 3.

  220. And it begins with O.

  221. Another O, and it says,

  222. Oh, magnify the Lord with me.

  223. And it just kept coming up and coming up.

  224. And the more that I thought about it,

  225. essentially, this is what I mean

  226. when I say disciples grow by seeing.

  227. We grow as we see and magnify the Lord.

  228. John Piper, he makes a very wonderful observation

  229. when it comes to magnifying the Lord

  230. and what it means to magnify the Lord.

  231. And so I want you to consider what he says today.

  232. He says this.

  233. He says,

  234. There's two kinds of magnifying,

  235. microscope magnifying and telescope magnifying.

  236. The one makes a small thing look bigger than it is.

  237. The other makes a big thing begin to look as big as it really is.

  238. We are not called to be microscopes.

  239. We are called to be telescopes.

  240. Christians are not called to be con men

  241. who magnify their product out of proportion to reality

  242. when they know that their competitor's product is far superior.

  243. There is nothing and nobody superior to God.

  244. And so by calling those who love God,

  245. by calling those who love God

  246. is to make his greatness become

  247. and begin to look as great as it really is.

  248. He says,

  249. The whole duty of the Christian can be summed up in this.

  250. Feel, think, and act in a way

  251. that will make God look as great as he really is.

  252. Be a telescope for the world

  253. of the infinite starry wealth of the glory of God.

  254. This is what it means for Christians to magnify God.

  255. But you can't magnify what you haven't seen

  256. or what you quickly forget.

  257. It's impossible for us to magnify the Lord

  258. to help others to see him for who he truly is

  259. if we haven't seen him ourselves

  260. or if we quickly forget what we have learned.

  261. What we must do is to begin to see God for who he really is.

  262. That means studying his word.

  263. It means reading theology.

  264. It means taking apologetics class.

  265. Join a life group.

  266. Join a Sunday school class

  267. and begin to see God for who he really is

  268. and let that spur your spiritual growth with him.

  269. You see, growing in our knowledge and understanding of God

  270. will lead to deeper trust.

  271. It will lead to deeper faith.

  272. It will lead to more obedience.

  273. The more, think about it like this,

  274. the more you know about me,

  275. the more I'm going to let you down.

  276. The more that you know about me,

  277. the more you're going to think,

  278. why did we ever call him to be our pastor?

  279. Why is he in this?

  280. The more you know about me,

  281. the more that I'm going to let you down.

  282. But with God,

  283. the more that we see him for who he truly is,

  284. the more knowledge we have about him,

  285. the more that we can magnify him,

  286. the more that we can take something infinitely big,

  287. focus in on a part of it,

  288. and see how big he truly is,

  289. then the more we understand,

  290. the more worthy you will find him to be.

  291. And so this brings us to the next way

  292. that we see disciples grow.

  293. And so we see disciples grow by seeing God,

  294. but also disciples grow by transformation.

  295. They grow by transformation.

  296. This is what Dr. Mewborn was reading for us earlier.

  297. He said in verses 1 and 2 of chapter 12,

  298. I appeal to you,

  299. therefore,

  300. brothers,

  301. by the mercies of God,

  302. to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

  303. holy and acceptable to God,

  304. which is your spiritual worship.

  305. Do not be conformed to this world,

  306. but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,

  307. that by testing,

  308. you may discern what is the will of God,

  309. what is good and acceptable and perfect.

  310. What Paul is saying and reminding us here

  311. is that we are called to give our whole self to God.

  312. We're called to give our entire self to God.

  313. Paul is calling us to present our bodies

  314. as a living sacrifice.

  315. It highlights a confusion

  316. that many people would have had

  317. with believers at this time.

  318. You see, for Paul to say to present your body

  319. as a living sacrifice,

  320. meaning to give your whole life to God,

  321. would have been something far different

  322. than they were accustomed to hearing.

  323. You see, they would have been just fine

  324. if Paul had said,

  325. you know what?

  326. Why don't you come to the temple,

  327. offer some sacrifices,

  328. do your duty,

  329. and then as you leave,

  330. you can go back to living

  331. however you want to live.

  332. That would have been understandable to them.

  333. That would have been something

  334. they were accustomed to doing.

  335. But Paul's saying something far deeper here,

  336. far more impactful.

  337. He's saying to present your bodies

  338. as a living sacrifice.

  339. He's saying don't compartmentalize your faith

  340. to one area of your life

  341. and then live completely different.

  342. But a relationship with the Lord,

  343. a relationship with Jesus,

  344. leads to a transformed life,

  345. leads to a life of offering yourself

  346. as a living sacrifice.

  347. We do not somehow give our spirits to Him

  348. without giving our lives to Him as well.

  349. Presenting ourselves as a living sacrifice

  350. ultimately leads to what Paul describes here

  351. as this transformed life.

  352. You see, transformation is a change

  353. that takes place.

  354. It means that your life is different.

  355. It's more than a change of action

  356. here and there,

  357. but it's a change of heart.

  358. It's a change of desire.

  359. Jerry Bridges, in Growing Your Faith,

  360. he describes it as having

  361. Christ-like convictions.

  362. He describes this transformation

  363. of developing Christ-like convictions

  364. and he says it this way.

  365. He says,

  366. if we're going to grow into Christ-likeness

  367. through exposure to God's Word,

  368. one of the things that we must do

  369. is to develop Bible-based convictions.

  370. A conviction is a determinant of belief.

  371. something you believe so strongly

  372. that it affects the way that you live.

  373. He said,

  374. someone has observed

  375. a belief is what you hold,

  376. but a conviction is what holds you.

  377. He says,

  378. you may live contrary to what you believe,

  379. but you cannot live contrary

  380. to your convictions.

  381. Sure, there may be times

  382. when you act contrary to your convictions,

  383. but your convictions are what will pull you back in,

  384. what will bring you back.

  385. Having convictions and being transformed

  386. is not something that you stumble upon.

  387. Paul says here to offer yourself

  388. as a living sacrifice.

  389. This isn't something that just happens naturally,

  390. but it's something we're intentional with,

  391. we're purposeful with.

  392. We intend to grow in our Christ-likeness.

  393. We intend to live a transformed life.

  394. We can do this by memorizing Scripture

  395. or carrying cards around with us

  396. that help us to remember Scripture.

  397. Jacob just recently got a cell phone

  398. and I walked by the other day

  399. and looked at his locked screen

  400. and on there it had a verse of the day.

  401. It's an app that constantly has a new verse of the day

  402. that gets put on there.

  403. What a great way to have this in our lives.

  404. What a great way to grow in our knowledge of Him.

  405. We set up times where we are committed to doing this.

  406. Committed to reading His Word,

  407. committed to praying,

  408. we purposefully choose

  409. what we will fill our minds with.

  410. If left to ourselves,

  411. oftentimes what ends up happening

  412. is we fill our minds

  413. with things that are just entertaining,

  414. that actually remove ourselves from reality.

  415. Whether it be watching a show at night

  416. and don't get me wrong,

  417. I enjoy TV as much as the next person.

  418. But that can't be our escape.

  419. That can't be what we,

  420. our default goes back to.

  421. Oftentimes we find ourselves

  422. just scrolling through social media.

  423. And if social media is something

  424. that you enjoy looking at,

  425. enjoy interacting with,

  426. then let me give you a kind of a tip here

  427. when it comes to spending time with God.

  428. Remove your phone from the equation.

  429. Just go ahead and set it off somewhere else

  430. because oftentimes we'll find ourselves

  431. starting with good intentions

  432. and finding our way right back

  433. to just scrolling mindlessly

  434. through different things.

  435. What we must understand

  436. is to develop convictions

  437. that lead to a transformed life,

  438. we must be intentional.

  439. The passage tells us that by doing so,

  440. we're going to accomplish something.

  441. We're going to discern

  442. what is the will of God,

  443. what is good and acceptable,

  444. what He wants us to be doing,

  445. which brings us to the final way

  446. that I want us to consider

  447. that disciples grow from this passage today.

  448. And that is this,

  449. not only do disciples grow by seeing God,

  450. not only do they grow by being transformed,

  451. but we also see here very clearly

  452. that disciples grow by doing.

  453. Disciples grow by doing.

  454. Now we're not talking about being saved by doing.

  455. Your actions,

  456. your things you do cannot save anyone,

  457. but we can grow with our actions.

  458. We can grow by doing.

  459. Verses 3 through 8 it says,

  460. For by the grace given to me,

  461. I say to everyone among you,

  462. not to think of himself more highly

  463. than he ought to think,

  464. but to think with sober judgment,

  465. each according to the measure of faith

  466. that God has assigned.

  467. For as in one body we have many members,

  468. and the members do not how have the same function,

  469. so we, though many,

  470. are one body in Christ,

  471. and individual members one of another.

  472. Having gifts that differ according to

  473. the grace given to us,

  474. let us use them.

  475. What a powerful reminder there.

  476. We've been given these gifts,

  477. let us use them.

  478. If prophecy in proportion to our faith,

  479. if service in our serving,

  480. the one who teaches in his teaching,

  481. the one who exhorts in his exhortation,

  482. the one who contributes in generosity,

  483. one who leads with zeal,

  484. and the one who does acts of mercy with cheerfulness.

  485. This passage reminds us as disciples,

  486. we must have a right understanding of who we are.

  487. We're not to think too highly of ourselves,

  488. that we've done this on our own,

  489. that we can save ourselves,

  490. that we can do all these things,

  491. but rather we are to think with sober judgment.

  492. In other words,

  493. with clarity,

  494. we are to think of who we are.

  495. We are to think accurately,

  496. not too highly nor too low.

  497. This morning,

  498. in our early service,

  499. we sang a song that had this phrase in there,

  500. that just really spoke to me,

  501. as we think about this.

  502. It said,

  503. Two wonders here that I confess,

  504. my worth and my unworthiness.

  505. We are to think rightly about ourselves.

  506. We are to understand that we are sinners,

  507. and that we have been saved.

  508. The late Tim Keller,

  509. he shows how properly understanding the gospel

  510. gives us this clear understanding of who we are.

  511. He says this,

  512. he says,

  513. He also says,

  514. And the gospel prevents us thinking we're more lowly than we ought.

  515. We are saved sinners.

  516. We are loved,

  517. and we are valued in the gaze of the only one

  518. whose opinion ultimately matters.

  519. And so what we see here very clearly is that

  520. as believers,

  521. we have several things in common.

  522. One, that we are sinners.

  523. That's every single one of us.

  524. But that sin is what doesn't define us anymore.

  525. What Christ has done for us defines us.

  526. So we understand our unworthiness,

  527. but we also understand our worthiness,

  528. that we are children of God,

  529. called to live for Him.

  530. And one way we do this

  531. is by using our gifts and abilities

  532. that God has given to us.

  533. We recognize that all believers

  534. have some things in common.

  535. We are sinners.

  536. And if we're believers,

  537. then we have something else in common.

  538. We are saved by God's grace.

  539. But we are all different

  540. in the sense that we have different gifts and abilities.

  541. We grow individually,

  542. and we grow as a church

  543. by using these gifts.

  544. As individuals,

  545. we grow in our relationship with the Lord.

  546. We grow in our trust.

  547. We grow with our understanding

  548. as we serve Him,

  549. as we do what He's called us to do.

  550. But also corporately,

  551. as a church,

  552. we grow by everyone

  553. using the gifts that God has given to them.

  554. You see,

  555. more knowledge is never the end goal

  556. of spiritual growth.

  557. It's not that we just become smarter sinners.

  558. It's not that we just read His Word,

  559. understand God more clearly

  560. so that we can be smarter sinners.

  561. It's that we're growing in our relationship.

  562. Rather,

  563. we want that knowledge

  564. to lead to a changed life,

  565. a life of doing and obedience.

  566. We want that knowledge

  567. to lead us to be more obedient.

  568. But we also understand

  569. that action and obedience

  570. are more than just the result of our knowledge.

  571. They also help us to grow.

  572. Yes,

  573. knowledge and obedience

  574. comes from understanding God more clearly.

  575. Obedience and action,

  576. they come from that,

  577. but they also,

  578. then in turn,

  579. help us to grow.

  580. One of the things that I have found

  581. is that most people say

  582. they want to be obedient to God.

  583. At least,

  584. at least when people come to church,

  585. most people tell me

  586. I want to be obedient to God.

  587. Most people that come in here

  588. on Sunday mornings

  589. or Wednesday nights,

  590. if you were to ask them,

  591. do you want to follow God's will for your life?

  592. Do you want to follow His plan for your life?

  593. Most people would say,

  594. yes,

  595. absolutely.

  596. But what I've also found

  597. is that so many people

  598. who say

  599. they want to follow God's will for their life

  600. have no idea

  601. what God's will for their life actually is.

  602. And so I hope this morning

  603. we can clear some of that up for us.

  604. I hope we're able to see more clearly

  605. what the passage has to tell us.

  606. They have no idea what His will is.

  607. And so I want us to look at that today.

  608. You see,

  609. we speak of finding God's will oftentimes

  610. we speak of finding His will

  611. like it's lost or something.

  612. Like we have to go out there

  613. and search and figure out what it is

  614. because nobody knows

  615. what His will for us is.

  616. When in actuality,

  617. the Bible gives us

  618. some pretty clear things

  619. that are a part of God's will.

  620. In fact,

  621. just looking at a couple things,

  622. we know that God desires

  623. lost people to be saved.

  624. 2 Peter 3.9 says this,

  625. It seems very clear

  626. that part of God's will,

  627. part of His wish here,

  628. is that people would come to know Him.

  629. That lost people would come to faith in Him.

  630. But we also know from Scripture

  631. that God has called us

  632. as believers

  633. to be a part of this.

  634. If you've been reconciled,

  635. then you've been given

  636. to the ministry of reconciliation.

  637. And so we know that God wants us

  638. to be a part

  639. of sharing this gospel message.

  640. And so it's very clear from Scripture

  641. that God's will for your life

  642. is to be a part

  643. of reaching the nations,

  644. of sharing the gospel message

  645. with those who are lost

  646. and dying in need of,

  647. whether it's somebody you work with

  648. who lives across the street with you,

  649. or somebody who's on the other side

  650. of the world.

  651. We see very clearly

  652. that God's will for us,

  653. His plan for our lives,

  654. is to be about reaching the nations.

  655. Part of God's way of teaching us

  656. is leading us through obedience.

  657. And so as we take steps

  658. in following what He's already called us to,

  659. He will lead us

  660. and show us other things.

  661. because it is true

  662. that some of the details

  663. and how this plays out in our life

  664. are unique to each and every individual.

  665. But how we know those things

  666. is by doing what He's already called us to do.

  667. I love this illustration.

  668. Some of you may have heard it before.

  669. I think it originally started

  670. with Adrian Rogers.

  671. But he mentioned the fact

  672. that when we consider God's will,

  673. there's so many things

  674. that God has already called us to do.

  675. And so if we're really concerned

  676. about the specifics

  677. of what He's called us individually to do,

  678. then we need to start doing

  679. what He's already called us.

  680. We need to start being a part

  681. of what He's already called us to do.

  682. And he said it like this.

  683. He says,

  684. when you're driving a car

  685. and when you're trying to steer a car

  686. and move it in a different direction,

  687. he says,

  688. is it easier to steer

  689. and turn the car

  690. when it's moving

  691. or when it's staying still?

  692. And of course,

  693. if you've ever driven a car,

  694. it's far easier to steer it,

  695. to turn it when it's moving

  696. than when it's staying still.

  697. It's really hard to get that car

  698. to go in a completely different direction

  699. if it's not already moving.

  700. And you see,

  701. in our Christian life,

  702. God has called us

  703. to follow His will.

  704. There's so many things

  705. that we already know

  706. that God is calling us to do.

  707. And if we want to find

  708. those specifics in other areas,

  709. it's a whole lot easier

  710. for God to guide and lead us

  711. if we're already doing

  712. what He's called us to do.

  713. And so if you want to know

  714. those specifics,

  715. if you want to know

  716. those next steps,

  717. if you want to know

  718. what is next,

  719. then start doing

  720. what God has already

  721. called you to do

  722. and let Him lead,

  723. guide, and direct from there.

  724. It's far easier

  725. to steer a car

  726. that is moving

  727. than is staying still.

  728. And so I want to challenge you

  729. to start moving today

  730. and let God guide you.

  731. What are some of the gifts

  732. that you've been given

  733. that you need to start using today?

  734. What are some of those things

  735. that you need to be

  736. a part of your life today

  737. and start using?

  738. Often we want the whole picture

  739. before we take the first step,

  740. but rarely does it ever

  741. start that way.

  742. Rarely does it ever start

  743. with seeing the whole picture.

  744. What first steps

  745. can you take today

  746. to use your unique gifts

  747. and abilities?

  748. Paul wants us

  749. to think of yourself

  750. with sober judgment

  751. with regard to gifts.

  752. But to begin with,

  753. we look at our hearts

  754. and we consider things.

  755. We look at our feelings.

  756. It's a great place to start

  757. when it comes to figuring out

  758. our gifts

  759. and how we want to use them.

  760. What do I enjoy doing?

  761. Where do I naturally

  762. gravitate towards?

  763. Do you enjoy working

  764. with children?

  765. Do you enjoy working

  766. with shut-ins?

  767. Do you enjoy working

  768. with the youth?

  769. Do you enjoy seeing needs

  770. and meeting the needs

  771. of the homeless?

  772. Do you enjoy

  773. different mercy ministries?

  774. Start with those things

  775. and then let God lead,

  776. guide, and direct you

  777. from there.

  778. Maybe we need to just

  779. look at the needs around us.

  780. What problems

  781. and needs do I see?

  782. It's always amazing to me

  783. that so many people

  784. can walk into a room

  785. and see so many different needs.

  786. For some it is,

  787. you know,

  788. there's nobody welcoming.

  789. For some there's somebody

  790. sitting beside themselves.

  791. For some it's something

  792. going on with the lighting

  793. or any number

  794. of different things.

  795. But God has given us

  796. these different abilities

  797. and a great place to start

  798. is looking at the needs

  799. that we see

  800. and begin meeting those.

  801. And as we do those things,

  802. as we start doing

  803. what God has called us to do,

  804. then He'll lead,

  805. guide, and direct us

  806. from there.

  807. In short,

  808. when we look at this passage,

  809. we see that in order to grow,

  810. we must be amazed by God.

  811. We must see God for who He is.

  812. And so I want to encourage you today

  813. to take time

  814. to think about who God is.

  815. Take time to reflect on the gospel

  816. and how it's changed your life.

  817. Make much of God.

  818. Stand in awe of Him

  819. and be amazed by who He is.

  820. In order to grow,

  821. we also see we must be transformed.

  822. Offer your life to Him.

  823. Present your body

  824. as a living sacrifice,

  825. saying,

  826. God, there's not an area

  827. that you can't have.

  828. It's all yours.

  829. Take it and use it.

  830. And finally,

  831. I want to encourage you

  832. to be obedient,

  833. to start doing.

  834. What has God called us all to do?

  835. He's called us all

  836. to make disciples,

  837. share the gospel

  838. with the lost and dying world.

  839. We know His will.

  840. Now I encourage you

  841. to start using your gifts

  842. and abilities

  843. to accomplish His will.

  844. Let's go to the Lord in prayer.

  845. Father, we thank You

  846. so very much

  847. for everything that You do for us

  848. each and every day.

  849. Lord, we thank You for the gospel.

  850. We thank You for the way

  851. that it impacts our lives

  852. each and every day.

  853. We thank You for what it is

  854. that You've called us to do.

  855. We thank You for giving us

  856. different gifts and abilities

  857. that we can all use

  858. for the purpose of reaching

  859. a lost and dying world.

  860. So Lord, give us the strength

  861. to do that.

  862. Give us the focus to do that.

  863. Give us the boldness

  864. to live for You

  865. in all that we say and do.

  866. And Lord, I pray

  867. that there's someone here today

  868. that needs to give their life to You,

  869. that needs to stand amazed

  870. for the first time

  871. at what You've done for them.

  872. Lord, You give them the boldness

  873. to step forward.

  874. And Lord, I pray for the rest of us.

  875. You would give us

  876. the encouragement

  877. to be obedient,

  878. to start using our gifts

  879. and abilities,

  880. to start working for You

  881. and what You've called us to do.

  882. And we ask all these things

  883. in Jesus' precious name.

  884. Amen.

  885. Amen.

  886. I want to invite you

  887. to take your Baptist hymnal out

  888. and turn to hymn number 94.

  889. He is here.

  890. And if the Lord is speaking this morning,

  891. I want you to respond

  892. as we stand together and sing.
