Well, good morning, everyone.

Nice to have you in the House of God today.

Hallelujah.

Well, we're starting a new series called Retelling the Story.

And while I was away fishing up north, getting huge, huge.

You know how a one-armed man tells you how big his fish is?

It was that big.

I got some hunkers and lunkers, and that was really good.

Uh good to be uh alone with God and his creation and uh uh to compete a little bit with uh brown bear, the grizzlies uh for salmon.

Quite the experience.

Well, listen, this morning, um if you don't mind, I'm gonna be a little bit grandfatherish, which is what I am.

And uh I'm gonna go back a few years when Pastor Brody got a hold of me.

He said, you know, it'd really be good to talk about the story of how KCC started.

And uh my heart towards you today is to go, well, if we can sort of step back a bit from our present, and maybe that will help us see a little bit about what God's intentions are for our future.

And uh how many of you are new to KCC in the last 10 years?

Would you raise your hands?

So there we go.

That's one of the reasons for sharing the story uh that we're going to share today.

I'm the founder of KCC, and I came here in 1982, uh, 29 years of age with uh a beautiful wife who you'll see in the next slide, and three small children, uh toothless Brody at that time, five years of age, I think uh four and two or three.

Um somewhere in that uh in that range.

This was taken a couple years later.

But um I want to go back a little bit and I'm gonna kind of give a uh uh a meta-narrative, which is essentially I want to give you the theme of the play so that you can understand where we're going.

And uh hopefully it will make sense of where we're at right now.

Um I must admit that uh 20 uh 38 years ago, almost 37 years ago, when uh when KCC was established, this wasn't all in the plan.

Uh God had things he was planning on doing that he didn't tell us about 29 years, uh 38, uh 37 years ago.

But uh we're still following the plan.

And you see some of that uh resulting on our property right now, and I'm sorry for the inconveniences, but uh we believe that this is uh God's will for us right now.

Let me just pray, okay?

Father, I just ask that you would uh come into this moment with us today as we begin to start telling the story.

Uh I pray that you will be honored in what is being communicated, and uh that we'll all see together that what is born of God overcomes the world.

And Father, it's really important to know that what has been started has been sourced by you, started by you, and you have you have some equity in this uh organization called Colonel Christian Center and its society.

And we ask, Father, this morning that you would uh take the words that I'm gonna share and just sort of expand them in each one's heart and let them know that they are they're standing on the shoulders of those who have gone before, that have helped them get to this point, and yet we have they have been brought here by the Holy Spirit to take us to another level.

And I pray that they'll get a sense of destiny in that, not just a sense of history, but also a sense of destiny.

I ask that, Father, in Jesus' name.

And everyone said, Amen.

Well, as I look across this audience, I do see people who have been with us an awful long time.

Right, Haydens?

Yeah, and I see Doug Doug and Sue this morning and my, my, my, right at the, almost right at the beginning within six months of starting KCC.

Let me give you, I'm gonna break it down into three areas: a personal, governmental, and then a missional uh side of the equation.

On a personal side, let me just start sharing my heart with you today.

And I don't know, it's just as unscripted as you'll ever hear me talk.

And I'm just gonna pray that the Holy Spirit will get out what he needs to get out today, okay?

But KCC, as I said, was started in in February 1982.

Um, after resigning uh my post in uh in uh Elam uh in North Vancouver.

Um I felt like the Lord was leading me to a next level in my life.

And um there was a point in time after our resignation that we were asked to consider pastoring a church in the city.

Uh, when I met with the board, I said to them, What's important to me is that every single one of you are in agreement with me coming as a pastor.

I don't want a majority vote, I don't want just a few of you uh uh being in favor of this.

I want uh a total unanimity on the board.

Uh my wife and I were actually in Fiji with Brody ministering when we got the call, and the call basically came back saying, listen, uh, we're in the majority, we're in agreement with you coming to be our senior pastor, but you had asked for unanimity, a total agreement on all the board members, and we don't have that.

And I said, That's fine, because I I believe that we move forward best in unity.

And so we got off the phone, and I remember both Cardi and I kneeling at the bed and we started to pray.

And we prayed, Lord, what is your will?

And the Holy Spirit spoke to us both at the same time and said, You're going to Kelowna.

Okay.

Now that's an interesting thing because you know you're trying to process, and uh, when we got home, I got another call, and it was from a pastor of a church in the city who had lost their senior pastor, and they said, Listen, we hear uh that you're open, and we would like you to come and be our pastor.

And it was one of the most gracious calls that I've ever received in my life, and yet in my spirit, in my heart of hearts, the Lord was saying, No, this is not, this is not the church for you.

And so I turned him down very gently and conveyed my appreciation for the honorable approach.

And uh the Lord kept on saying to us, but you're going to Kelowna.

So in other, uh, as I began to look at it and pray into it, the Lord spoke to me and said, Three churches, three streams are going to flow into one stream.

Now that's an interesting phrase, but it was an idea that the Holy Spirit put in my heart, and I knew which churches in the city that if I came into the city, they would fold and join us.

That was uh a very difficult process because we were a young family.

Both Carlene and I had had very strong denominational ties with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada, going right back to my dad, pastored under uh Daddy Baker in Montreal, one of the first Pentecostal churches in Canada.

So I have a lot of legacy and inheritance within that movement.

And for me to move out of that denomination because of my love for the body of Christ, and that was the thing that was driving me, was that my love for the body of Christ was greater than my love for a denomination.

I didn't know how to process that at 29 years of age, but I know that the Lord was uh was working.

There was a brother who knew I was in this place, and at that time I grew a beard.

I shoveled uh sidewalks in the middle of a winter time.

Uh I had nowhere to go.

As pastors, we don't get unemployment.

We're uh we're in a place of living out of our freezer, and our freezer was getting pretty bare.

And I had three kids to take care of and a home.

And uh a brother uh called us up and said, listen, there's a conference in Banff.

Dick Mills is ministering there, and we would like you and your wife to come.

We'll pay your expenses to Calgary and drive in from Calgary to Banff.

Uh, we just feel that you're supposed to be there, okay?

So I got to the Banff conference in a cowboy hat and a big bushy beard.

And now, if you kind of understand this, I'm doing the prophetic thing this morning because this is the way I usually have my hair, and this is what you saw in the last few months, and I thought I put both together, the past and the.

All right.

But there are different faces that I have over the years.

And as I look back at that, we uh were sitting outside in the hallway, and there was a man sitting next to me, and he said, Uh, what are you doing here?

I thought it's an interesting question, but well, I'm here because I I need uh I need to know God's will about the future.

And uh, believe Dick Mills, we're just gonna pray that the Lord is gonna give a word uh to confirm what he's been speaking to my heart.

He says, Well, what are you what are you thinking God wants you to do?

Well, I said, Listen, I feel that, and this is the first in my life for me to branch out this way to set up an interdenominational work in Kelowna.

I do believe that if I go into that into that city, three churches will probably fold their doors and join with us.

I did not know that he was one of the pastors of those churches, one of those churches.

He sat there very quietly listening to me.

And then as I walked in through the doors of the of the conference uh hall, uh there's a man there, Dale Archibald, who knew me.

And he says, David, nice to see you.

What are you doing here?

Well, I need a word from God.

That's all I said to him.

Then my wife and I made our way to the back of the conference center.

I mean at the back of the back of the rose, and I was sitting there, straining my neck as high as I could for him to pick me out and give me a word from the Lord.

Hello, have you ever been there in that kind of desperation?

And uh, as he was as he was uh ministering, uh I realized that I was I was making this really easy for God.

So what I did is I slumped in my chair behind the person in front of me.

There is absolutely no way that he could get to me.

He couldn't even see me and I couldn't see him.

My wife tapped me on the side and said, Sit up.

I mean, she I was embarrassing her the way I was slouched down in my chair.

I thought I'm gonna make it hard on God.

In the middle of it, Dick Mills pointed to the man that I talked to at the door, and he said, You know someone here that needs a word from God.

And Dale opened up his mouth and said, David Callum.

So he said, Well, David Calluman, please stand up.

So I stood up and he gave me four words at that moment in time, each were chronological, the words that the Lord had given me private previously, but the fourth one would be the new word that the Lord had to give.

The first word had to do, had to do with be still and know that I'm God.

Well, I don't know if we could have been more stiller.

We we were patiently waiting on the Lord and we were not trying to make anything happen.

We had actually turned down certain things because we wanted God's will.

And how many of you know it's important to have God confirm your way?

A man plans his path, but God is the one who establishes it.

And so we need to see, in quotes, the prophetic of God, the confirmatory words of knowledge, stuff that comes alongside the word of the Lord to us and to our uh, you know, internal senses of God's leading.

And so at that point in time he said, Listen, one word from you, Psalm 46, 10, be still and know that I'm God.

Well, okay.

I remember that was one of the first words that God spoke to us.

Number two, he said, No weapon formed against you will prosper, and every tongue that rises against you, I will, I will show to be in the wrong.

And I thought, well, that's that that's an interesting one because I really at that point in time feared what people would say if I literally left my denominational setting and all of my friends that I'd grown up with and gone to Bible school with, etc., and ventured out on my own.

They would not understand what the Lord was uh asking of me, inclusive of my own father.

And that was a very difficult decision for me.

But the Lord goes on in that scripture and said, I will vindicate you.

Don't have to make excuses, don't have to explain, I'll vindicate.

I said, Okay, the Lord had been speaking that to me.

The third one, he said from 2 Chronicles 20, 17, you're not gonna need to fight in this battle.

Take your position and stand.

In other words, this is all about my will, it's not about your will.

It's all about me doing something, it's not about you doing something.

That was again the last word that the Lord had put into both Carlin and I's hearts.

And so I'm saying, oh, that's great.

The prophetic word has been given.

I've heard all of this before, right?

And then he said, and yea, a fourth word.

Well, of course, my heart was going, okay, this guy, this Lord, what is it?

And he pointed to 2 Samuel chapter 23, and that's the story of God bringing some mighty men together, and how one man, a man called Shammah, uh, stood his ground in the midst of this lentil field and defended it, and the Lord brought about a great victory.

And he looked at me and he said this, and this is in front of people from Kelowna who were also in Banff, and they heard it, and from this pastor who actually heard this word, he said, You're to go, and our question was, should we go?

You're to go, you're to defend the ground, and the Lord will give you the victory.

Oh, well, I cannot tell you what peace entered into my heart at that point in time and my wife, and we we left, and as we were uh at home, uh still praying into the how on this, there was another call that said, Listen, we'd like I'd like to meet a brother who phoned up and said, I'd like to meet for breakfast with you.

Oh, that's great.

Uh went out for breakfast with them and sat down, and when I walked in the door, there were 18 men.

And the 18 men were sitting there at the table and they said, We believe God wants you to be pastoring in Kelowna.

And what is God saying to you?

And I had to make it very clear to them that if I came, I did not come at their call.

They were not ordaining my coming, that the Lord was ordaining my coming, and that they would have to receive me as a leader.

They were not hiring me as a pastor, but they were recognizing my leadership.

They did.

It wasn't long after that that those three churches that I talked to you about, and and uh uh Doug is here to witness and affirm that today with throne room ministries, they closed their doors and joined with us.

A restoration church closed their doors, gave us all of their chairs and sound system and bank account.

In another group, key to another leadership in the city, also came and connected with us, and many of them are still serving with us here in the ministry.

It was what I needed to know that I was not doing this at my own will, but I was doing it following the plan and the purposes of God.

It was interesting to see that pastor and his wife come to the church who I talked to in Banff, and they said, When you said it, it upset us.

You don't know this, but we were the ones that asked you to come and be our pastor on that phone.

But now we're going to have you as our pastor anyway, because we're closing our church and joining with you.

So, in a very quick period of time, God brought, you know, a number of people together.

When we opened the doors, as I said, uh people with a hunger for God came together, and we couldn't find another church that would open up an afternoon or an evening service or even a Seventh-day Adventist church, uh, but we found a pub.

And uh the Winnegers Post House said, Come and join us, connect with us.

Uh, we'll rent it out for you on a Sunday morning.

Well, we'd have to go in early, we had to clean and sweep the floors of all the butts and aerosol the whole thing because of the alcohol of the night before.

Hello.

Come and join KCC at Winnegers Post House, right?

Come on.

But when people, when we opened the doors, people started gathering.

And when they gathered, there was a time of refreshing that came from the Lord.

People got healed, people got delivered, we filled that place with praise and worship until finally God gave us an opportunity to rent our own facilities.

And of course, you come in with nothing, right?

You come with no not enough seats to handle the process, all of the furnishings that are needed, etc.

How many of you know there's a lot of sacrifice in those early days of people giving to pay for the very chairs that they sat on?

God gave us a place on Springfield which we wound up buying.

Um the owner was in debt.

Uh we we said we would give you one dollar down, and he took it.

And that that one dollar down turned to uh a value of another uh$700,000 over a period of time.

Uh we saw 60 acres of land on Benvolen.

It's still sitting there opposite the the golf uh uh practice green.

Um that 60 acres uh we tried three different times to get out of the agricultural land reserve.

We had to raise$100,000 in one Sunday morning to accomplish that goal to buy it for$440,000.

We did.

People sacrificially gave money to buy that land.

Uh over a few years we paid it down to probably about$240,000 were left, and it became very difficult for us to sustain that, the rental of our facilities, et cetera, et cetera.

And we wondered whether we were going to lose the land.

And a brother and sister in the church, the brother never came to church.

He had he had a sickness, he would sit at home and and uh listen to the services later by tape.

But he and his wife said, We will carry the$240,000 of interest on this land until you're able to take care of it.

It wasn't long after that that they finally came, they walked in the door and said, Listen, uh, we don't feel that we should be carrying this anymore.

My heart dropped.

Uh, but they said, we feel that we should just give it to you.

We're gonna wipe off that$240,000 debt, and now we own that$440,000, 60-acre of property.

It was selling that 60-acre of property that moved us from$440,000 to$1.5 million.

We were able to buy this land that we sit on today debt-free with money in the bank.

When we finally sold the building we had on Springfield, um, the Lord uh the Lord had brought us together with a sense of hope uh about building on this property.

And I remember meeting with the builders and the architect and our board, and we sat around the table as he presented to us a two-story administration and Christian education wing along with a sanctuary connected to it on this property.

And when we looked at the costs of building it at that time, it was one million dollars more than we could afford.

How many of you know after waiting 15 years uh to actually have the land and not be able to build on it is very, very complex to us emotionally.

Our church went through a little bit of a crush in the heart.

And um and uh we said, Lord, you know, we've been faithful in that 15 years we had helped build 15 other churches because we had no money to build our own.

We thought the best thing we could do was sow into building another church.

Hello.

If you sow a church, you might reap one.

And so I remember not knowing what to do at that table that day, and some of the leadership are here this morning.

I just said, all I can do is pray.

We just need to pray.

And uh we began to pray, and I prayed a prayer I'd never prayed before in my life, and there were many around the table who were not Christian, so for them to listen to what I was saying was kind of uh like, okay, uh you go ahead and do your religious stuff.

But I prayed this prayer.

I said, Father, you're the ancient of days, and you're the ever present help in trouble.

You're both.

You've been in our past, our present, and our future.

You're the God of yesterday, today, and forever.

You're in our future already, and you know what the building looks like.

So would you please tell us what the building looks like so we could build it?

In Jesus' name.

Amen.

Now let's close our eyes.

Let's just wait on the Lord.

Now, this is a building architecture, architect all sitting around the table, and we're going, okay, God.

And within one minute, I'll I'll say this to you, within one minute, God said, build up, not out.

Build up, not out.

And when the builders began looking at this, if we built the same structure with the same amount of space up and not out, what would it cost us?

They came back and said, It'll cost you one million dollars less to do it that way.

And at that moment in time, what was an impossibility became a possibility.

And our hope was restored by the word of the Lord.

That's why we're sitting in this building today.

All I can say to you is this what is born of God overcomes the world.

Do you believe that this morning?

Is this helpful to anybody out there to see?

So, as I have had the opportunity as a as a young man, looking back over, you know, 37 years of walking with some of my brothers and sisters, it's been um it's been quite the experience.

Um and I have to look back at that to see the will of God and the calling of God opening up doors of avenue uh for us ahead.

And oftentimes I've said to God, um, God, you started this.

Uh, it's up to you to finish it.

You just have to give us an understanding of what you're wanting to do.

And who would have known, you know, 37 years later, the organizational reach that God has given us as a church and a ministry and as an organization globally?

Hallelujah.

It's wonderful to see.

It's clear I'm going to only get to two rather than to three this morning, so I'm going to take the next 10 minutes, okay?

The second thing was governmental.

And I want you to hear my heart.

I'm a pastor's kid.

I lived on top, underneath, and beside the church.

Uh, they were called parsonages, right?

But I had the tendency to listen through the vents.

And I would hear the way people talked about my mom and dad, who were the pastor, the way they talked about each other, the politics that were operating within the church.

And when uh when I was a young man, even though I'd had miracles happen in my personal life and I knew that God was real, I didn't like the church.

I saw I saw a lot of hypocrisy in the church.

And of course, there is, right?

And that's where hypocrites should go.

Right?

At least we're honest hypocrites.

We're looking, you know, we're looking at our life and going, this is where we should be, and we're down here, and we come every time to church and hear a pastor talk some stuff to us to get us from here to there, right?

So that we're living our lives with some integrity.

All right.

But I know the struggle that I went through entering into the ministry, I won't tell you the story behind that, but what I saw was that if, okay, Lord, if you want us to start a church, what does it look like governmentally?

And governance was very important to my heart.

So governmentally, as I had watched the politicalization of the church over time, I saw a number of things that were not biblical that had been adopted from the Society Act and from the politics and the governance of our world and not from the governance of God's church.

And some of them, I'll just tell you, I won't go into it all, but oftentimes I saw annual votes of confidence on the pastor.

How many of you know a vote of confidence on the pastor is a vote of non-confidence?

So we got 70%, but 30% don't like me.

Who are they, right?

That's not a healthy thing.

It's not a biblical thing.

Okay?

Secondly, I saw um eltioneering that was going on where people would uh strive for each other for positions to be on the board, and then they would go through an electoral process where they would uh make decisions and compare one brother to or sister to another.

And I saw the Bible made it very clear not to compare yourselves one with one another, but we're doing that in the electoral process.

And then I then I saw I saw rule by majority vote that, and people would work the politics to get enough people on your side at a board setting so that they would control the decision of the board rather than uh what I saw biblically.

So when I began to look at the model of governance, the Holy Spirit began to speak to my heart about apostolic governance, a leadership-driven church.

And it would be based upon biblical principles that I saw.

Number one, God called a leader, and there needs to be just a recognition of that leadership.

God doesn't call a committee, He calls a leader.

So just recognize that leader needs to operate in the highest levels of integrity.

Secondly, uh congregations must affirm their leaders and and and not elect them but affirm them.

Those leaders need to be discerned by spiritual leadership and presented to the congregation as people that could represent them with honor.

They should not be brought in singularly on a standalone basis.

And our decisions at the team level should be made unanimously, in agreement.

How many of you know Psalm 133?

How God blesses those who work in the heart of unity.

When brothers and sisters gather together in unity, there the Lord releases an anointing.

There the Lord releases blessing.

And so, over 37 years of ministry, we have worked as a team on the grounds of unity, covenantally to each other, uh, guarding over each other's lives and families.

And I want to say that we've had, I believe, stable, faithful leaders who have been watching over the mission and the vision of this organization called Colonna Christian Center and its society.

They have relational equity, they have seasoned wisdom and a history of knowing what has been done and said over the years that we've been here.

And I want to say just publicly today, I'm very, very grateful for the leaders that the Lord has brought alongside us over the years.

It's not been an easy painting, a nice picture of the move of God.

How many of you know there's uh hills and valleys in this?

Uh, and so there's a lot of emotion that runs at low levels, deep levels, and emotions that run at high levels as we've seen God come in and do incredible things in our midst.

Uh we've been faithfully transitioning uh the senior leadership to next generation leadership, and most of that has occurred across the entire organization.

Uh, but in reference to uh the board, we're still in process.

Uh the process has begun uh over the last year, uh, but we also believe that that process is still uh going to be carrying on over the next year, too.

I had to make a decision as a pastor uh that I become a spiritual father.

I I didn't come here to leave.

Uh I've I was born in Campbleton, New Brunswick, moved to Cam uh to Glace Bay, um, Nova Scotia, where my sister was born, uh, then to Halifax, then to Kamloops, then to Montreal, then to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

Hello.

I moved around a lot.

How many of you know we didn't have email and Facebook and all that back then?

So I lost my friends at each move that I made, and it was a very lonely process.

And I said, Lord, you know, is this your is this the concept that you have for the church that pastors come in and they they preach for a call to an assembly and then they hang out there for as long as they feel, and then maybe they cause that church to succeed, and then they ride the waves of success to to apply for another position and just keep on going up the denominational scale?

Is that what you have for me?

Or do you want me to come and live and give my life for a spiritual family?

And so over the years, there's been difficult times.

I've had the opportunity to leave as opportunities to go and pastor other churches were given to me.

That's the way it's done in the denominational setting.

But if you want to be a spiritual father, then you've got to be willing to grow old with people.

And I'm not a perfect man, uh, I have my failings.

Uh, but I've done my best to be uh a good example to you of what it means to be a spiritual father.

I know that what is needed in our generation is not pastors but spiritual fathers.

I'm not talking about going into a Catholic priesthood.

I'm just talking about what I see in Scripture is that the heart of fathers doesn't they don't raise soldiers, they don't raise students, they don't raise servants, and yet all of us need to be a servant, a student, and a soldier.

They raise sons.

They raise sons and daughters who carry something in their heart that carries the DNA of what God has been doing within that family.

I've been with a lot of families, and I know that there's a lot of pain and sorrow as well as joy connected to families when we see our children grow up and sometimes carry the call, sometimes not carry the call.

Not carrying it brings great pain, carrying it brings great joy.

When what you've passed on from fathers and mothers to children is being accepted and welcomed.

I know over 37 years that there are some people that I wish that I had grown old with, some of them have passed away, some of them are not here anymore.

And I wish that they were here today to see what the Lord is getting ready to do.

I I I haven't had a chance to talk to the missional one, but I'm gonna ask you to do something, and that's to read Isaiah 61.

Um and there'll be a time that I'll be able to address some of that as we're gonna talk about over the next month about the values and the belief systems and the things that make us who we are.

But critical to who we are is Isaiah 61.

And when we were making decisions over the years, we would turn to Isaiah 61 and say, Lord, what are you wanting to do?

What are you wanting to do?

We would read Isaiah 61, and out of the scriptures would come clarity.

This is what my plan for you has been.

And we'd look at it and go, Oh, wow.

We could do this.

God's giving us approval by his mandate in Isaiah 61.

And we've tried to keep ourselves very close to this.

We do what he's told us and given us permission to do.

We don't do all things, we only do what he's given us our permission to do.

Telling the story a bit.

I'd like to have a fireplace in the background.

But we have our men and our young boys, and I don't know, maybe we have some of the young girls out there too at a men's retreat.

Uh, this happening right now this weekend.

God bless them, right?

With all the rain they went through yesterday.

God bless them.

I hope they had a good place to sleep.

Um, but I'm glad you're here because God placed you here for a specific reason and purpose.

And he's connected to you to a body of believers small in number but great in vision.

And we have to decide in our heart.

Do we want to see the end?

I want to be here as long as God permits, so that I can see what his plan has been.

I've kind of liked it up to this point, but the Lord has done.

And I kind of like you.

I like being with you.

I like my greatest passion is seeing you reach destiny, become all that God has called you to be.

And to do that, God puts the solitary in a family.

He puts you in a spiritual family.

You become the planting of the Lord that he might be glorified.

And you go, I was called here too, Pastor.

Ah, good.

Then fulfill your calling.

Fulfill your calling and attach yourself to destiny because this is going to take you some places that maybe you'd not planned to go.

Uh, but it's going to be good.

It'll be good.

So, Father, this morning, we ask you to help us become a part of a greater story.

We're not just attending a church of our choice.

We've been called here, connected by the Holy Spirit here.

And you have intentions, Lord, to use that people committed to your will to do some spectacular things.

We're on an adventure together, a journey together.

We don't know where it's going to end, but we do know, Lord, it began by being born of the Spirit, and it will overcome.

It will overcome.

It will rise up and become all that you intended it to be it to be.

Through the down times and the good times, through the valleys and the mountains, you will be found faithful.

You will bring us through.

And uh, we will see what you've been able to do through a group of committed people, sons and daughters, who are willing to obey and surrender themselves to your will.
