Well, I don't mind telling you I'm a little nervous this morning.

Is it okay?

They say that public speaking is probably one of the most difficult things to do, and I've done it for many years, but then coming this morning, um I have a few prayer words praying for me already.

So it's good to be with you.

It's nice to be in the house of God with God's people, and it's nice to experience the manifestation of his presence.

And I remember the last time I ministered, probably back in September of last year, I was in the foyer talking with someone who is not a Christian, the first time in church.

Excuse me.

And he said, What was that in there?

And I said, What are you referring to?

Because there's a lot of things that happen in our church, right?

He said, No, what was it in there?

I said, Well, what are you referring to?

He said, I I there was a tingling from the top of my head to the bottom of my feet.

I felt something that I have never felt in my life before.

I said, Well, did you feel bad?

Nervous?

He said, No, it felt really good.

But what was it?

I said, it's it's God, his presence, presencing himself with his people.

And uh I could see that tears filled his eyes because he was experiencing something he had never experienced before, which was the presence of God.

That actually God may be there.

And um had a chance to pray with him.

That was really good.

Well, it's good to be with you this morning.

Brody has been uh, Pastor Brody has been talking a lot about the church in the last uh few weeks, uh, as other leaders have.

And uh because I wrote a book on his church his way, he said, Dad, it'd be a great time for you to just come and bring that to the to the church body.

But I'm not gonna talk about the book itself, but there are gonna be two books in the foyer afterwards, by the way.

One that I've just uh written, His Church His Way, and the other one is being reprinted on the life purpose, and some of you have heard that.

Well, I get authors' costs when I buy these books, and I've bought a hundred of each to give away to you this morning.

So who, however it is, don't trample anybody.

I don't think that you're actually going to do that, but if you would like a book, it'll be in the foyer for you as a blessing and a gift from my household to yours.

Some of you, as I was looking at the congregation this morning, uh are new to me, new faces.

I may be a new face to you.

And so I'm very, very grateful uh for the opportunity to connect with you today.

Uh founded this church uh 43 years ago.

Uh but the last uh seven months in September of last year, uh my wife Carlene was diagnosed with stage four uh non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

And because it was such an aggressive cancer, they immediately made decisions to operate and uh and to start the chemo.

Um it was addressed quickly, as I said.

Um chemo was going pretty good until one of the concoctions in a chemo actually caused my wife to black out on the kitchen floor.

She fell backwards straight on the kitchen floor.

And in the process, we didn't realize the impact that it that it had, although I was next to her on the phone with 911 and trying to revive her.

It took 30 seconds for her to breathe.

Uh, a little bit of a trauma for me, to be honest.

Uh, I've seen that happen to my wife.

Um, we've been married 50 oh 52 years.

So um you have a real connection to one another, and you just you don't want to see that lost in a moment of time.

Um when she woke up, she says, What am I doing here?

But a couple months later it became very clear that her her bone structure had been compromised by that fall.

She had nine compound fractures in her back and her spine, two in her rib cage and one in her sternum.

And so she has gone through a huge amount of pain.

Um I can't uh it's very hard for me to describe that to you.

Pain management is is a problem in itself, uh, particularly when there's so much uh to heal in terms of regaining bone density, etc.

Um she's come through the chemo, and the last tests show no cancer in her body, which we're we're very grateful for.

But the journey is still on, and uh she is uh 101, 102 pounds, uh very frail, and um marginal mobility.

Um of course all of her taste buds have been affected, uh trying to.

I often I said this in a joking way.

I said, look, if cancer doesn't take you out, my cooking will.

But you you've all been so gracious, uh so many of you, and I wouldn't name names, but you you've come by the house and uh brought dropped off food and been a help to us on that level.

Others have done, you know, I know the prayer times, the comments, the the texts, uh, all of that stuff that have been coming our way.

I just want to say I'm we're very grateful for every act of kindness that you've shown towards us as a family.

Each each little thing that was done really helped because it's been 24-7 for the last seven months of caring for my wife.

I do that, and it's an honor to do it.

Uh but I think you all know that it's been a difficult journey for her as well as for me.

And uh in the process, we keep on trusting God and saying one more step.

Just take one more step forward and trust God to come through on our behalf again.

Amen.

Um we've come this far by faith.

We go the rest of the way by faith and trusting uh in his uh his the resolution.

Now, these two books that I referred to you about, I didn't necessarily feel the connection at the time I wrote them.

I was in uh training with uh leaders in Taiwan uh and uh over over Zoom and uh God really gave a uh really manifested to me why he had put both of those on my heart.

And it's a lot of that is going to be demonstrated today in the text that I want us to read together.

I like reading the Word of God together, and if it's possible, if you could put up Ephesians chapter 2, 18 to 22 in the message translation, and if you could, um are you able to put that on the screen so people can read it with me?

Ephesians 2 · chapter mention

Is it there?

No, not yet.

Okay, all right, I'm gonna read it, okay?

And you're gonna enjoy it.

Okay, Christ brought us together through his death on the cross.

The cross got us to embrace.

Isn't that a great phrase?

We didn't know each other before, we're strangers, but when we came to Christ, the cross got us to embrace one another.

That doesn't matter, gender, race, color, creed, it doesn't matter.

Once we come to Christ, we've come into a family, right?

He said, and that was the end of the hostility between us.

We became family, we became brothers and sisters.

Christ came and preached peace to you outsiders, and peace to us insiders.

In other words, some people thought that they had, you know, they had a better right to what Christ was bringing than others.

The Gentiles and the Jews were separated from one another in terms of those benefits of access.

But what Paul writes is no, that hostility was not only broken between us as people, uh, but he brought peace to both insiders and outsiders and made us one.

He treated us as equal and so made us equals.

Through him, we both share the same spirit, and through him we have access to the same Father.

That's plain enough, isn't it?

You're no longer wandering exiles, you're no longer strangers or outsiders.

The kingdom of faith is now your home country.

God is building a home.

He's using us all, irrespective of how we got here.

And many of you have come through different venues to Jesus.

We all, you know, I always say that we're we're all ex-somebies in this place.

Uh whether you grew up in the faith or didn't grow up in the faith, or whether you were a prostitute or a drug addict, or uh, you know, it doesn't matter whether you were a thief in the past, a criminal in the past, or or whether you just were a rich guy making money and made made that your priority.

The issue is we all got here and we all are ex-somebodies.

Uh and we're all sitting, if you actually knew the story of who you're sitting next to, you might be a little bit ill at ease.

Um the but the fact is that God knows how, by his grace, to heal all of us and love us all into the kingdom.

We now are part of a faith community, right?

The kingdom of God.

So God's building a home, and he's using us all, irrespective of how we got here and what he's building.

He used the apostles and the prophets for the foundation.

Now he's using you.

Isn't that interesting how he compiles that together with apostles and prophets and said they were part of building the early church, but now he's using you.

Pretty, pretty important factor in the process when he compares you to Christ as the cornerstone and the apostles and the prophets as the foundation, and then he says, and you, you have a place in it.

An important place, okay?

Now he's using you, fitting you in brick by brick, stone by spone, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone that holds all the parts together, and we see it taking shape day by day, a holy temple built by God, all of us built into it, a temple in which God is really at home.

Father, I pray that you're at home this morning with us.

The last part of the message translation is not as strongly worded as many others, but I want to read it from another.

It says, In Him and in fellowship with one another, you yourselves are being built up into this structure called the church, with the rest to form a fixed abode by God in the Spirit.

Now, some translators use the word a dwelling place, that God is creating a dwelling place.

Others use the word habitation.

But the interesting thing about it all is that God's not interested in visiting his people, he's interested in his people visiting him.

He's not interested in visiting his house, he's interested in inhabiting it.

So when you come into this church building, not the bricks and the stone, but the building of the church of which all of you are part, living stones, uh God is saying, I'm I'm not interested in you visiting, uh me visiting your home.

This is not your home.

This is my home.

I'm interested in you visiting with me in my home.

It's his church.

This belongs to him.

It's not the building, the space, the property.

It's everybody that's gathered together and assembled by the Holy Spirit into this place this morning.

It's all him.

It all belongs to him.

It's not, well, it doesn't belong to you, belongs to him.

And he is opening the door for you to come when you assemble together to visit with him in a sovereign and a supernatural way.

There's something that can happen together that cannot happen alone.

So when I look at the two primary tasks or reasons why Jesus came, they are kind of caught up in this portion of scripture from Ephesians chapter 2.

Ephesians 2 · chapter mention

Uh as I said, when I wrote Life Purpose and the Church, the book on the church, I didn't see the connection, but I do now.

First, in this portion of Scripture, Paul speaks to the Christ's primary mission in coming to uh to this earth, and it was the cross.

When we think of Christ coming, all of us have to focus in on Calvary.

We think about what Jesus did, and he set his eyes as a flint towards Calvary.

He was not going to be moved from that primary task and mission that he was sent by his father to accomplish.

And that task was to reconcile humanity that had once had a relationship to him, to reconcile humanity back to the Father.

And the best way to do that was to send his son, to introduce the father back to humanity again.

And when they said, Well, what's the father like?

They said, Well, if you've seen me, you've seen the father.

If you like who you're seeing, you're gonna like my dad too.

So here's the whole heart of Jesus.

Now he's got to deal with the sin issue because that's kept a separation between us and his father.

Uh the reason why man left the garden.

But the cross was him identifying with us in our sinfulness, taking upon himself our sin, becoming sin on our behalf, so that we could stand before God free, acceptable, forgiven.

That was a there was a divine exchange there where Jesus came and took your place and died in your place and died for your sin so that you might live.

So the cross, absolutely critically important for us.

Then as I said, Jesus comes and it reveals the true nature, and the cross gets us to embrace, and that was the end of hostility.

To be honest with you, what I really believe about Canada is that the only hope for Canada is the church.

And the reason why the church is so critical to it is because of the cross.

It's the cross that breaks down all the boundaries and the barriers and the things that create the hostility and the separation and the divorce and the divide from one another and brings us together.

It's the cross that gets us to embrace.

And the more the nation of Canada returns to the cross and recognizes the value of Christianity, the more God will heal our name.

Isaiah says that Jesus set his face like a flint towards Calvary.

His coming was clear.

Humanity had run from God and not to him, and so God brought himself to us in his son.

The enemy had turned the hearts of humanity against his father, and Jesus came to turn the hearts of humanity back to the Father and be reconciled.

And that's the true message of the book on life purpose from my perspective, because God knew you before the foundations of the world, and he planned, even if things went wrong, he had a solution, and the solution was the cross.

He wants to give your life, a hope, and a future, and he wants to see you healed and your life reconciled to Heavenly Father.

It's a relational thing.

It's not a religious thing.

Christianity is not a religious thing, it's a relational thing from beginning to end.

So the second reason, and this oftentimes is not talked about, that Jesus came, is not just simply to focus on our salvation and find forgiveness, and we get a relationship with God, Heavenly Father, brought back together.

It was more than that.

The Bible says Jesus said, I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

Your personal salvation was very important.

It was vital.

That's the doorway in through being born again.

But God is not interested in, you know, Lone Rangers.

He's not interested in Rambos.

He's not interested in people trying to live their life in Christ alone.

The purpose of Christ's coming was first and foremost the cross, getting an opportunity for you to have a change, to become a new creation, saved.

But the second factor is to place you in a family.

It was not one without the other.

It was a both and uh both-end task.

We are not intended to operate on an individualistic mentality.

We were called into a corporate relationship.

We were called to gather together.

We were called to be, we're talked about as living stones being placed together and built together.

We're not called to do it alone.

Right from the very beginning in the garden, God's heart was it's not good for men to be alone.

That whole alone factor was what God was dealing with, not only in the cross, but in the building of the church.

The church was well, there was a concept of church called the synagogue where the Jews met together.

But but Jesus had something else in mind.

And I won't go into it all.

It's in the book here about the ecclesiastic of God.

What God was creating was much grander than anything else that the world has ever seen.

By the way, my spiritual family is global.

And you know, I've I've shared this before.

Some one time I was on a on a plane and uh I was sitting next to a guy getting to know him, and we were sharing, and he says, now what do you do?

I said, Well, I work for the biggest company in the whole world.

And my, you know, and the head of the company's been around forever.

And, you know, I just went on and strung this thing out as long as I possibly could before I actually sat down and said to him, Hey, I'm a pastor.

I'm part of the church, and wherever I go, I'm I've I've got God's family.

There's cars, there's homes, there's money, there's bank accounts, there's assemblings, there's food, there's provision.

Whatever would happen to me in any country, I could pick up the phone and get a hold of someone in my company.

Church is one of the greatest inventions in the world.

And the idea that Jesus would just come to save you personally, individually, and said, okay, that's fine, good, did my job, you're okay now.

No, it wasn't complete until the building of the church.

You need to see your the value of the cross at a high level.

But you need to look at the church with the same value.

You know, some people they look, you know, I mean, I know that in some circles, God is a swear word.

I get that, I understand that.

That's that's the that's the development of the enemy's strategy to to separate us from the Father and who He actually is.

I get that.

But we also see the same anti-church mentality.

And in our nation, we see an anti-Christian mentality.

I'm telling you right now, the cross and the church are the hope of the nation.

Jesus did not come to bring one without the other.

He not only came to save you personally and individually, because he loved you personally, but he also loved the world and sent his son to save the world and then to place them in a spiritual family.

You're not to be living out your Christianity alone.

God with us.

And here's what I want to place the emphasis on in the next hour that I have with you.

God has always wanted relationship with you.

Always.

Christianity is not a religion, it's a relationship.

In his connection to humanity, he created you in his image, after his nature, made you spiritual beings.

And that spirit has unlimited capacity for God.

That's why God created you spiritually, because your spiritual capacity, well, Paul put it this way: he said, you can be made full to overflowing with all of the fullness of God.

You go, well, I've only tasted a little bit.

I've only experienced God, but you can know God as much as you want to know God because of your spiritual capacity.

God made you spirit.

God, who is spirit, made you spiritual and capable of sustaining a relationship with Him.

So it's not about religion, it's about relationship.

And God in Christ became touchable, human, relatable, capable of being befriended.

So when we look back in Scripture, okay, and uh I just want to do a little bit of a thumb uh thumbproof uh just from mountain to mountain across the Old Testament on this, um, so that we understand this whole issue of relationship in the garden, as an illustration.

In the garden, God recognized human companionship was a need.

But in Genesis 3 it says they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day.

What was God doing walking in the garden in the cool of the day?

He was looking for who?

Adam and Eve.

So, right from the very beginning, you see God's desire for relationship.

God placed them in the garden, but he also was in the garden.

And he would walk and talk and connect and relate to humanity.

It was sin against God that affected that relationship, and God had to send them out of the garden, out of paradise.

Paradise was lost.

But we also see throughout the Old Testament, as God begins to interact with people, we see encounters where God is again coming at it from a place of relationship.

Enoch, the Bible says that Enoch walked with God and he was not, for God took him.

In other words, it was possible because God wanted to find someone to connect with.

And he walked with God.

Can you imagine that?

I mean, I still am blown away in my mind that you know the 12 disciples could wake up every morning, have breakfast, and sit and talk with God.

God in Christ.

God's Son was right with them.

The one who created the universe was sitting at the same table.

I just find that absolutely awesome.

And yet their eyes were blinded to the fact of who he was.

But Enoch, just as an illustration, walked with God and was not, for God took him.

Somebody said, Well, you're, you know, God said you're a little closer to my home than to yours.

Why don't you come over and stay?

But the fact of the matter is that God wanted to walk with humanity.

We think of Jacob, Abraham's grandson.

He's sitting there at night and he has this dream of a ladder going up and out of up to heaven and angels coming up and down.

He found the portal of where heaven touched earth.

And he named it Bethel, the house of God.

This has got to be the place.

And he said, Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.

And he was very afraid and said, How awesome is this place! There isn't this is none other than the house of God and the gateway to heaven.

Now, let me say this to you.

There are a lot of Jacobs that are possibly in this room.

We come to the house of God, and we don't really understand how awesome He is in this place.

We don't understand we've actually entered into the portal between heaven and earth.

We don't understand that this is the gateway to heaven.

Do you understand that?

And you walked in here this morning and assembled, the church assembled.

The building was here already, but you came in the church and made it the church.

But do you understand how awesome is this place?

Do you understand that you're in that place that through the venue of prayer you can enter a portal?

And heaven can touch earth, and earth can touch heaven, and the presence of God can come and go and come and go and impact and manifest itself in this place.

Do you understand that?

But he said, How awesome is this place?

But he said, Surely the Lord's in this place, but I don't know it, didn't know it.

Do you realize that there are many churches that are meeting across Canada this morning where people come into the church, they sit down on the chair or the pew, and they go, God may be here, but I don't know it.

I don't haven't experienced it.

They don't understand because they're not coming in with that mentality.

They're coming in as a social club, as a fellowship time, but they're not here to meet with God.

How many times has the church met and God, surely the Lord was in this place, but I didn't know it?

What if you did know it?

What if you did know that God actually where two or three gather in my name together, there I am in the midst of them?

That tells you he doesn't wait for a crowd.

He doesn't wait for the thousands to come to a major conference.

Where two or three are gathered, there I am.

That is the drive of the heart of God for relationship.

Just try to keep them away.

David writes about that in Psalm 100, I think it's 139.

He says, Where do I go to get away from his presence?

He's a stalker.

I mean, God's after me with his whole heart.

Thank you, Lord.

It's gonna be harder for you not to have a relationship to God than to have a relationship to God, because God is already leaning your way in Christ.

Moses, God called out his name, gave him an under, introduced himself, and made Abraham his friend.

I mean, we're talking about the heart of God throughout the Old Testament, trying to express, I want to be with you.

I want to be connected relationally with you.

I need to see what we can do together.

I'm not only providing a way for you to be personally saved, but I brought you into a church, I've brought you into a spiritual family that I have intentions to use throughout history.

So God shows up to people, God shows up to the nation of Israel coming out of Egypt.

I'm not just sending you out of Egypt, I'm going with you.

And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light.

I'm not just telling where you got to go, I'm going with you.

Relationship.

The tabernacle in the wilderness.

When they were out of Egypt and going across the wilderness, there were twelve tribes, and God set up the tabernacle in the midst of the tribes.

So there were three tribes to the north, south, east, and west, but in the midst of them all was the tabernacle.

And in the tabernacle, God would show up and manifest his presence with what was called a Shekinah glory.

And people saw the glory of God in the midst of the people.

God wasn't out there somewhere or up there somewhere or in here somewhere.

He was manifest.

He wanted to be with us.

Think God still wants to be with you?

I mean, how bad does God want to be with you?

As a matter of fact, one of the most tragic verses in Scripture is, you know, God says, What evil have I done that you don't want to be connected to me?

God actually goes through some self questioning.

He says, What evil have I done that you don't want anything to do with me now?

Israel, they knew about the power of the presence of God, and they would take the Ark of the Covenant that represented his presence, and they go into war with it.

One time because of their own sin and rebellion, the Ark of the Covenant was lost to the enemies.

The enemy didn't know what to do with it.

But Israel thought, well, that's not a big deal anyway.

We'll continue having our tabernacle in the wilderness.

We'll still have our priests out there doing all of their official stuff in the tabernacle, uh, but there'll be no Ark of the Covenant.

So we'll just keep the religious thing going.

Don't tell me that's not going on today in the 21st century church.

Let's just see how long we can operate as the church without his presence.

Let's just do all the perfunctory things of functioning like a Christian ought to function and let's have the offering, let's have the worship, let's have the preaching, let's do our thing, and then go out and get some books and grab a coffee and go home.

Do you think church in Canada operates like that a lot?

Do they actually desire the manifestation of his presence?

I'm not sure.

All I know is that if that is your heart, God loves to manifest himself in the midst of his people.

And David knew this problem.

When he went and got the ark back, he set up a tent on Mount Zion and put the Ark of the Covenant in the tent, and he would go in and out, in and out, and in and out of the presence of God all the time.

And that wasn't supposed to happen.

But God permitted it.

Why?

Because David had such a love for the presence of God.

God said, I like this David.

He's a man after my own heart.

He loves me.

I love him.

I'm going to give him access in and out.

As a matter of fact, the prophets prophesy that in the last day, maybe before the coming of the Lord, he's going to restore the tabernacle of David.

And the tabernacle of David was that tent where the Ark of the Covenant was in there and the presence of God.

What?

Which means this.

We're invited in.

Why wouldn't you want the presence of God?

I've been in meetings where the presence of God was so thick it felt like you could cut it with a knife.

You didn't want to leave.

Because that there was that special moment in time where it seemed like the gathering of the church, the assembling together, was of such a hunger for God that God just showed up in power and began manifesting himself.

And you didn't have to lay hands on people for healing.

Healing was happening throughout the whole congregation.

You didn't have to pray and ask someone to give their life to Christ.

They ran to the front, got on their knees, and said, I need to come back to God.

I think we underestimate the power of the church.

We underestimate the heart of God desiring to the level he has to invest himself and inhabit, not just visit you, but inhabit.

Comes to the temple in Christ's time.

Jesus came into his father's house that was intended to be a house of prayer for all the people.

Isaiah said, Even then I will bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all the people.

But what had the Jews done?

They had separated the Gentiles and the Jews.

Only some people could get in.

And Jesus came and cleaned it up and went into the temple and cleaned it up and said, This is the Father's house, not your house, not a place of merchandising, it's not a place of religion, tradition.

It's a place where people come to meet with God.

And God meets with them.

Then when Jesus said, I'm going to build my church, he says this.

He said, Paul writes about it, gets a revelation on a personal level.

He says, Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who lives within you?

That when you gave your life to Jesus, your spiritual life opened up, and God took the opportunity to invade you and possess you with himself.

Christ in you.

So I don't have to call Jesus to come.

I'm walking with him.

He's in me.

He's with me.

He's for me.

He surrounds me with shouts of deliverance.

Hello?

He's un undergirds me.

He's overshadowing me with protection.

His you understand what I'm saying?

There's nothing about this that is not relational.

It's not religion.

It's relationship.

And so Jesus said, Listen, I want to be so close to you.

I remember when I was ministering in Nigeria, they said, they said, Pastor Dave, you are under our skin.

And I thought, you know, in Canada, that's a phrase to say you're irritating somebody.

You're really messing with me.

But but with them they said, you're under our skin, meaning we feel so close to you.

It's like you crawled under our skin.

Well, hey, God feels so close to you.

He's crawled under your skin.

He inhabits you.

You right there are the church, the temple of the Holy Spirit.

God inhabits you.

You carry him with you every day.

You don't have to call 911.

He's within you.

And where you go, he can manifest through you.

That's right.

That's the personal level.

But then Paul also has a revelation of the corporate level.

And in 1 Corinthians 3.17, he says, For the temple of God is holy, and that temple, you, plural, the believing church and its individual believers are.

In other words, you personally carry intimately Christ in you, the presence of God with you.

And that presence of God can manifest through you at any point in time.

He's closer than a brother, he's under your skin.

But don't you know that you together are the temple of the Holy Spirit in whom God dwells?

So there is something different about when the church gathers together that forms the temple of God and God manifests Himself corporately.

That's why it's so important that when you come to church, that you're God focused.

You're not self-focused.

You're not doing your own thing.

You're here saying, God, we're here together with your church.

We've assembled ourselves together, and we are now your temple, and you inhabit the praises of your people.

You inhabit us.

Now let your glory come on the church and do something sovereign and supernatural.

Manifest your power, your presence through your people when they come together.

I have missed being with you on the Sunday services, done my best to connect with many of you.

Mornings are very difficult for my wife.

I felt alone.

I know I'm not alone, but I felt alone.

I'm so grateful for the streaming because we could sit in our room and put on our iPad or television and come right into the service with you and worship together with you.

And I'll tell you the presence of God would exude from that stream into the presence of God would come into our room.

I felt part of the church.

What am I saying this morning?

I'm saying that you underestimate the power of the church coming together.

Don't underestimate the power of the cross.

We're all like somebody's.

Don't underestimate the power of the cross.

His grace goes deeper than your sin.

But don't underestimate the power of the church when it assembles together.

And the Bible says, don't forsake the assembling of yourselves together, even more so as you see the day of the Lord approaching.

We're going to need the church more in this day than we have ever needed it before.

But not the church just for a facility, the church so that a manifestation of the presence and power of God can be released.

This world needs to see a church that is invincible.

And with Christ, with God, if God be for you, who can be against you?

If God be with you, who can come against you?

If God is in you, who can stand up against you?
