  1. We last week started a new. Series really just a journey

  2. through. A book of the Bible.

  3. In a title that we're calling the.

  4. Power of the Church. And we're going to be looking at

  5. the history and the amazing story and movement of the. 1st.

  6. Church that we are standing, celebrating and taking part in

  7. today and so. If you have your.

  8. Bibles. We're in the 2nd chapter now.

  9. Of the Book of Acts. The book of Acts, chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  10. And as you're turning there? Just appreciate those of you

  11. who. Have made it to.

  12. Church after. A long day of celebration for

  13. those of you who celebrated in the day yesterday.

  14. I know many people did. Maybe not many.

  15. Maybe. Just a few, but April. 18th Did

  16. anybody celebrate April 18th as National Superman Day?

  17. Where are my nerds at? It's OK to celebrate that it's

  18. a. Yearly event for many people who

  19. are enthusiastic. About probably the greatest

  20. superhero arc of all time. And on April 18th, 1930. 8 the

  21. very. First Superman comic book

  22. edition one came out and it was essentially the Superman origin

  23. story. Of how it all got started, Who

  24. was? This person that that would go

  25. on this incredible journey of saving humanity.

  26. And I, I mentioned that because we are in a sense, people who

  27. gravitate towards origins. I have four children and so that

  28. means that I'm pretty much always celebrating either their

  29. birthday or some friend's birthday.

  30. And it is the practice of humanity.

  31. To just revolve your life. Around your beginning and my

  32. kids when it's time for their. Birthday.

  33. They love to hear their. Origin story tell tell me again

  34. the story of me entering into the world.

  35. And I don't think they're unique.

  36. I think there's something inside of all of us that to like to

  37. remember, maybe sometimes reluctantly, how long it's been

  38. since the first birth or the 1st.

  39. Birthday, I should say. And that's because when you when

  40. you think about your identity, you're thinking about your

  41. origin, you see a whole trend of people wanting to know even more

  42. than just their birthday. It's like, tell me, I'll send in

  43. my DNA. You can tell me about my

  44. ancestors. I want to know who I am.

  45. And that's worth mentioning now. Because there's the day.

  46. You were born, and there's also the day that you found out why.

  47. And today we're going to. Look back at the the.

  48. Origin. Story of everything we just did.

  49. We almost take it for granted how unique and.

  50. Special it is to be the gathered people, the.

  51. Church around the world. Because you guys have all been

  52. to church, we do this every. Sunday you can You drove by 5.

  53. Churches to get here there are probably.

  54. Reference points that you've all had to different churches and

  55. styles and sermons and songs. And so we just assume it's

  56. always been this way, but today we're going to remember.

  57. That this all started. With one church gathering, it's

  58. set it all into motion. It's the origin.

  59. Story of the of the church. And it's what we call Pentecost.

  60. And in looking at this, not only do we find the origin story, but

  61. we find that identity, the identity that is found in the

  62. origin story because you you find out why something was

  63. started and you can make sense of the middle of the story and

  64. you can see. Where it's going?

  65. And so I'm so. Grateful that the Lord gave us

  66. the origin story of what we call the.

  67. Church and we're going to look at that in Acts chapter 2 and so

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  68. before we get into the. Verses that we'll we'll study.

  69. This morning I'll just remind you of of.

  70. How this origin story? Was, you know, really.

  71. Kicked off like. Often times you're waiting for a

  72. day of arrival, the origin story of birth, and it turns into this

  73. great excitement and then you just got to wait.

  74. How many of you? Have heard the due.

  75. Date and it's like OK that's the due date and now we're seven

  76. days past you know maybe some of you are in it right now you're

  77. like I I'm relating to the sermon because.

  78. I was supposed to give birth a week.

  79. Ago. I'm sick of waiting and this.

  80. Is where we left off. You'll remember the disciples in

  81. Acts chapter 1 come to Jesus and they say is now the time to

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  82. restore the Kingdom of Israel? And he told.

  83. Them it's not your job to know when.

  84. Your job is just to wait. And he told them specifically

  85. what they were waiting for. The power of the Holy Spirit.

  86. That was going to be poured. Out on God's people.

  87. And so they're waiting. And it was in Acts chapter one

  88. it says that they spent. 40 days with the resurrected.

  89. Lord, he gave them infallible. Proofs of his.

  90. Resurrection and taught them all the things pertaining to the

  91. Kingdom of God. And then he ascended, and from

  92. his ascension to this moment was 10 days.

  93. I'm just waiting. Is now the time?

  94. Is the Holy Spirit. Come yet is the is.

  95. The day of arrival. Happened yet?

  96. You know, maybe you know, they're, they're praying and

  97. they're like. Was that it?

  98. Was it? We are now going to.

  99. Study the power of this. Origin story so that we would

  100. know undeniably that this has God's hand on it, that this is

  101. not a story of men who were obedient to wait and then just

  102. got super organized and started planning how to get the message

  103. out and how to. Fulfill the the great.

  104. Commission. This is a story.

  105. Of people who simply waited. And God's perfect timing.

  106. God did what no one else. Could do this is the.

  107. Origin of the Church as we know it, read with me.

  108. Acts Chapter 2. Starting in verse one when the

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  109. day of Pentecost. Now this is how I know it was 10

  110. days. Penta means 55.

  111. Pentecost is 50 days since. Passover.

  112. So we had 40 days with Jesus. They've.

  113. Waited 10 days to get to the 50th day.

  114. It is now the day of Pentecost fully arrived and they were all

  115. with 1 accord in one. Place and as they're there.

  116. On that Sunday morning, one place in one accord it says in

  117. verse 2, and suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a

  118. rushing mighty wind, and it. Filled the whole house.

  119. Where they were sitting then there appeared to them.

  120. Divided tongues as of fire. And one sat.

  121. Upon each of them and. They were all.

  122. Filled with the Holy Spirit. And in the filling it says they

  123. began to speak with tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance

  124. and there were there dwelling in Jerusalem Jews.

  125. So this is setting the scene for the all of the surrounding in

  126. the city of Jerusalem. There are there dwelling there

  127. devout men from every nation under heaven.

  128. And when this sound? Occurred.

  129. Verse 6 The multitude came together and they were confused

  130. because everyone heard them speak in his own language and

  131. they were all amazed and marveled saying to one another.

  132. Look. Are not all these who speak

  133. Galileans and how? Is it that we hear?

  134. Each in our own language in which we were born.

  135. Parthians and Medes and Eliamites, those dwelling in

  136. Mesopotamia. Judea, Cappadocia, POTUS.

  137. In Asia, Phrygia and Panthea, Egypt.

  138. In the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrenia.

  139. Visitors from Rome both. Jews and proselytes.

  140. Cretans and Arabs, we hear them speaking in our own tongues the

  141. wonderful works of God. And so they were all amazed and

  142. perplexed, saying to one another, whatever does this

  143. mean? We now have the answer to the

  144. waiting in undeniable miraculous form.

  145. So that it would be. No question mark as to.

  146. What caused this? This was.

  147. Not the work of men and we need to look at them the.

  148. Miracles that were on display that I just read about to.

  149. Institute the beginning of the Church and as we do that, this

  150. is one of those moments in church history which which is

  151. going to draw us all in and kind of divide the room because some

  152. of you no doubt are are interested in maybe the Bible

  153. from afar. Or you're here at.

  154. Church and you think OK. Let's see what these.

  155. People are about, maybe they'll give me some, some good advice,

  156. some good moral teaching. There is no escaping from the

  157. very first moment that the Church is born, that the Church

  158. operates and functions in miracle it It is the hand of God

  159. that is on the Church, and it is the storyline.

  160. Of all of the Bible. And, and I say that this divides

  161. the room because there are sadly a growing number of people that

  162. try to tame the Bible, that try to come to church and take the

  163. things that make sense according to the way we would just

  164. naturally live and look at all the other things and explain the

  165. way to. Do us a favor.

  166. So that's more believable. There is no escaping.

  167. That God. Is a miracle worker and he

  168. brings life to the church in a way that no one can.

  169. If you remove God, you remove miracles.

  170. I found this helpful from one of the great historians of our

  171. time. His name is Tom Holland.

  172. He. Is slowly opening his heart.

  173. To. Viewing all of history through

  174. the lens of God's hand, but. He's respected as a secular

  175. historian. Listen to what he says.

  176. I see no point in preachers, Christian preachers.

  177. Just. Recycling the kind of stuff you

  178. can get from any kind of. Left Liberal because.

  179. Everyone can give you that if I want that.

  180. I'll get it. From.

  181. A Liberal. Counselor, if you're a

  182. Christian, you think that the entire fabric of the cosmos was

  183. ruptured when, by some strange moment, someone who is a God and

  184. a man set everything on its head in a massive singularity.

  185. That is at the. Very heart of everything, and if

  186. you don't believe that, it seems to me you're not a confessional

  187. Christian. But if you do believe that, it

  188. should also be possible. To dwell on.

  189. All of the other weird. Stuff that traditionally comes

  190. as part of the Christian. Package.

  191. This book is full of the only answer being.

  192. There is a God. Who set it into motion?

  193. Put into. Order the laws of.

  194. The universe and at any moment invades, and this is the story

  195. from Genesis to Revelation, and it is the story of what we are

  196. doing right now. If you don't.

  197. Believe that God. Set into motion the cosmos sent

  198. his son to turn the whole thing upside down with the power of

  199. resurrection. Give.

  200. Life to all who believe. Then you're you're not ready to

  201. hear the origin story of the church, but in the origin.

  202. Story. You see that as.

  203. Consistent with everything God does, He sets it into motion in

  204. a way that is undeniably supernatural.

  205. In other words, the hand of God. And this is how we must look at

  206. this very first gathering. It must be seen as impossible

  207. apart from the power of God on display, and this is what we

  208. will see in fact, by these miracles.

  209. That I just read aloud. In the account given to us in

  210. the book. Of acts there are. 3 miraculous

  211. phenomena that these people experienced in the origin story

  212. of the church. You have first of.

  213. The the audible phenomena, it says read again.

  214. With me there was There came a sound from heaven.

  215. This is this is not an earthly sound.

  216. It's a sound from heaven and the.

  217. Best way that the the. Historian could could capture

  218. this was by comparing it to the sound of a rushing mighty wind

  219. that. Filled the house.

  220. They were sitting in. So this is this is what they're.

  221. Hearing and, you know, we are, you know, surrounded by the

  222. beauty of mountains, living in a valley.

  223. So we don't get to hear. Huge.

  224. Gusts of wind often but if any of you have been around the

  225. power of wind, you know it comes with an unmistakable noise with

  226. the wind and this is what is happening that they they.

  227. Heard. Wind entering into their

  228. gathering place and for this we now see our. 1st picture with

  229. clarity. Technicolor that.

  230. God's hand is. Here that that this is.

  231. Something that is from heaven to.

  232. Tell these people and us. Who stand on the foundation of

  233. this gathering. That we're studying that God.

  234. Is breathing on his. People to.

  235. Fully understand this it it. Helps.

  236. To know the language that they used for wind was pretty much

  237. synonymous with the language we use for.

  238. Spirit. So wind and spirit were were

  239. both thought of in a similar sense, because wind is like

  240. breath and the spirit. Is like the breath of.

  241. God, in fact, we'll we'll now. Ask ourselves, where have we?

  242. Seen something like this before and we can find reference points

  243. to the story of God now being fulfilled in His church.

  244. You'll remember going all the way back to the beginning, we

  245. saw a moment like this when God made man from the dust.

  246. He fashions man out of dust, and he's not alive until it says in

  247. Genesis. Chapter 2.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  248. That God breathes his spirit of life.

  249. Into him there is no humanity without the miraculous.

  250. Power of God's breath. Animating humanity with life.

  251. And so for a moment, as I, you know, take a break just to

  252. talking. To you church people, for those

  253. of you who. Are at our gathering or

  254. wondering what we believe. Let me help you understand.

  255. What you believe because there is a?

  256. Challenge. For people who try to.

  257. Understand how humanity came alive without understanding the

  258. breath of God, and you can. Hear all sorts of theories.

  259. In the the halls of academia, but it is an absolute dead end

  260. to try to. Figure out what actually brought

  261. life to our. Planet that is a mystery of

  262. science that there is no direction on, no momentum, there

  263. is no good study, there is no good experiment, there is no

  264. answer to how humanity is alive. But we know.

  265. That God breathes his spirit. To make us.

  266. Alive and we see. A continuation of this story in

  267. On the Easter Morning. We could have spent our entire

  268. Easter Sunday looking at John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  269. As the resurrected Christ visits his.

  270. Disciples who are locked in. Fear of what fate awaits them.

  271. Their leader was just. Hung on a cross to me and made

  272. an example of. They're afraid.

  273. Jesus appears in their midst and it says he breathes on them the

  274. Spirit and offers them forgiveness.

  275. He was starting to breathe life into his disciples, but.

  276. The story of the church is. That Jesus is not just choosing

  277. a select few. To have this powerful life, the

  278. disciples have a preview of the life, but they were.

  279. Told to wait on power of on high when the spirit.

  280. Would be pulled out, poured out. And as we read on, everyone says

  281. that there was a a rushing wind that everyone heard and that

  282. everyone experienced. The power of the Spirit.

  283. And he is now breathing life on his church, the church.

  284. Is the body of. Christ made alive.

  285. By the power of the. Spirit that comes like the.

  286. Breath of God. In the sound of a wind.

  287. This is God. Telling us what we're actually

  288. doing, what our origin. Story is without the power.

  289. Of God and the Holy. Spirit the Church is.

  290. Dead, and I'm sure you've experienced that.

  291. Jesus continues to help us understand the overlap between

  292. the wind and the Spirit as he's talking to Nicodemus.

  293. Very important lesson he's giving Nicodemus.

  294. That we will see fully. Revealed on Pentecost in John

    John 3 chapter mention

  295. chapter 3. Jesus answered most assuredly.

  296. I say to you unless. One is born of water and.

  297. The Spirit. He can't enter the Kingdom of

  298. God, that which is born of. Flesh is flesh.

  299. And that which is born of spirit is spirit.

  300. Don't marvel. At what I said.

  301. You've got to be born again. You must be born of spirit.

  302. And then he says, the wind blows where it wishes.

  303. And you? Hear the sound of it.

  304. But cannot tell where it comes from or where it goes.

  305. And so is everyone who is born of the spirit.

  306. The wind is making you alive and the the.

  307. Power of God is in. His Church to represent the

  308. spiritual. Life of the.

  309. Boarding end Kingdom. And we see that with our first

  310. miracle, our first phenomenon. The second one is visual, says

  311. then there appeared to them. Divided tongues as of fire, and

  312. so it says it appeared them, and it it.

  313. Seems like there's tongues of fire hanging over every one of

  314. their heads, so not only are they hearing this incredible.

  315. House. Rocking noise of wind, but

  316. they're also looking imagine the moment where there's.

  317. All of these. People and they see fire hanging

  318. over. The heads of these people.

  319. Well, once again we asked the question, where have we seen

  320. this before and. Throughout the story of God.

  321. Revealing himself to man we find moments where God is revealing

  322. himself through the imagery of. Fire.

  323. We already looked at Genesis now.

  324. Exodus Exodus chapter 3 as. God is going to.

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  325. Appear to Moses to call him to shepherd his people.

  326. Redeem them out of Egypt and send them towards the promised

  327. land. How does he appear?

  328. Bible Study 101 in a burning Bush that's not consumed the

  329. great I am. He.

  330. Shows himself in the presence of fire, and then as they are

  331. redeemed from Egypt, and they begin to.

  332. Walk. The long road through the

  333. wilderness to the Jordan River to get to the promised land, he

  334. says to his. People, I will be with you as a

  335. cloud by day to shade. Them from the scorching heat of

  336. the desert sun and a pillar of fire by night.

  337. And he is. Revealing himself as the.

  338. Presence of God with his people through.

  339. Fire and John the Baptist comes on the scene and he says I.

  340. Baptize with water. But Jesus is going to.

  341. Baptize you with the Holy. Spirit and fire.

  342. So in these two phenomena, what we are remembering about the

  343. origin story? Of the church is that it is.

  344. God pouring out his life and His presence on his people.

  345. That is what we do. When we gather, that's not

  346. always what we do. I mean, we've all been to the

  347. functions. That are lifeless.

  348. And have no remblance. Of the of the Spirit of God, but

  349. our. Origin story helps us understand

  350. our identity the the gathering of God's people to give him

  351. praise and sing and and and and read his word is also a

  352. gathering. Of the people.

  353. Who have been made, born again by the Spirit of God in the

  354. presence of God. And this is what happens on the

  355. very first gathering on the on the on the Pentecost.

  356. And now we come to maybe the most perplexing of them all.

  357. At least as you read the text. They seem most confused by the

  358. language phenomena. There was a verbal.

  359. Phenomena happening with these. People as God's life.

  360. Is poured out on them. They come alive in ways they

  361. didn't even know they had life, namely with language, says They

  362. start speaking on all of these languages.

  363. According to all of the the the tribes.

  364. And the people groups that were represented there, it says in

  365. Acts 2 verse 5. And there were dwelling in

    Acts 2:5

  366. Jerusalem. Jews, devout man from every

  367. nation under heaven. This is 1 moment where we can

  368. just try our best to understand. A little bit of the.

  369. Traditional Jewish moment here and we we remember that.

  370. Pentecost was, in fact, an actual feast of devout.

  371. Men from all over the regions that they three times a year.

  372. Were were called as people who were part of God's chosen

  373. people. The the the Jewish people 3 * a

  374. year they. Were called to come to Jerusalem

  375. on a pilgrimage of sorts. To celebrate a feast altogether,

  376. so we have Passover. We remember the.

  377. Feast of the. Passover.

  378. You can't understand Holy Week until you understand.

  379. All of these people. Were there to remember the

  380. Passover Lamb of God and that's just so happened to be fulfilled

  381. in. Full by.

  382. Jesus, the Passover lamb. And now we have.

  383. This feast. Which is the feast of Pentecost

  384. and in the perfect timing, all of these people.

  385. Says that there are. 15 languages represented.

  386. All of these. Jews had been dispersed by Roman

  387. occupation and all of these different lands.

  388. It is now time for them to come together, and in their coming

  389. together they represent tongues and tribes and nations and.

  390. Where have we? Seen people coming?

  391. Together where there is a. Language.

  392. Outbreak that causes a perplexing.

  393. Moment. For people well for this.

  394. Not only we do have our origin story of the church.

  395. We also get our prequel and every good origin story has a

  396. prequel. The prequel to this moment to

  397. understand what? Is.

  398. Happening with the verbal phenomenon of language that is

  399. spoken by people who didn't know it and heard.

  400. By people who do we go all the way back?

  401. To Genesis, we actually. Look at a tragedy.

  402. That happened in Genesis Chapter 11 and to understand this.

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  403. We we have to see. One of the great problems of

  404. humanity that was. Previewed for us.

  405. In the Tower of Babel. The Tower of Babel.

  406. In a very. Short.

  407. Reminder. Of what that story was.

  408. Represents to this day one of the great challenges of humanity

  409. against God. They remember that the Genesis

  410. is describing God's good and perfect creation gone wrong.

  411. Genesis describes God and man walking in perfect harmony

  412. together, sin entering and then man slowly and then rapidly

  413. turning its back to God and it devolves into the.

  414. Chaos that we live in. And it gives us these.

  415. Stories for us to look out. For that, what happens when man

  416. turns against God, One of the. Stories.

  417. And be a student of history for our time now one of the great

  418. stories as it eventually man tries to make a name for himself

  419. and all of the people come together and try to unite to

  420. make one nation, not under God, but in place of God.

  421. This is the Tower of Babel, it says.

  422. Let us make a great name for ourselves and build a tower to

  423. heaven that they themselves would become God on earth.

  424. And I say be a student of history because that has been

  425. the rise and fall of empires ever since.

  426. People trying to consolidate power under 1 government that

  427. would rule the rest and there would be no.

  428. Need for God there would. Only be a name that is great

  429. among men. It's happening to this day every

  430. time an empire rises and falls. We live in the rubble of the of

  431. the last war and then, slowly, humanity.

  432. Tries to build back up. To not to being so organized and

  433. so great that we no longer need God.

  434. And so in Genesis 11, God in his mercy.

  435. Because I don't know how many of you have lived anywhere near a

  436. tyrannical government. They're not.

  437. They're not pretty When when all of the power is consolidated

  438. into a great name that is not God.

  439. Humanity is suffering and it's horrible and it never ends well.

  440. And because God is merciful, he said, I'm going to break up the

  441. one world government that is godless.

  442. I'm going to scatter people and divide them by language.

  443. And when Tower of Babel? Happened we have a very.

  444. Similar moment to Pentecost. They were confused and

  445. perplexed, and they were scattered.

  446. And God in His mercy had a plan of redemption that He is now

  447. reversing right in this moment that we study in.

  448. In the first Babble, the languages were confused.

  449. So that people would be. Divided and in this, in this

  450. moment, in the. Reversal of the of the.

  451. World being divided so they wouldn't unite against God.

  452. God is pouring out language to reunite people, and in a way.

  453. That the disciples. Didn't even fully understand

  454. until right now. He is now offering us the vision

  455. that we take part in the. Global Church of the.

  456. Actual plan of redemption. The disciples.

  457. In Acts chapter one said is now the time for the Kingdom of

  458. Israel and you'll remember he said it's not for you in other

  459. times this season, but now we do have.

  460. What their hearts desire was it? Wasn't that there was going to

  461. be a great Kingdom of Israel like the.

  462. The the glory days of. Solomon it will not be that

  463. there's going to be a Kingdom of America.

  464. That is, you know, built up to be the.

  465. Blessed Kingdom on earth, it will not be your little Kingdom

  466. either 'cause we all have Babel in our hearts what is actually

  467. now the plan of God for his glory and our.

  468. Good is the. One and only Kingdom of God, and

  469. this Kingdom of God goes to every tribe and every tongue and

  470. every people group, and they were all there to set into

  471. motion God's. Desire to pour out his spirit,

  472. as it says. On all people, and this is the

  473. moment we see now the redemptive plan of God to set into motion

  474. the coming day, when there will be 1 King once and for all, with

  475. one people baptized into one baptism of his Spirit on earth

  476. and the Church. Is the.

  477. Preview and the mission of that one goal on Earth.

  478. That's what we're doing. That's our origin story.

  479. Our origin story is the reversal of the prequel.

  480. And so now that the question is, you know.

  481. Why did God? Do it on Pentecost?

  482. What? What was it about Pentecost that

  483. made this the perfect sovereign moment?

  484. For God to pour out his spirit Well, as stated, all people were

  485. there they. Represented God's heart for the

  486. nations they. Could go with the power of the

  487. holy. Spirit and the message that

  488. they'll receive from Peter. That Christ is.

  489. The anointed one, Jesus, they'll go to where they came from.

  490. But there's another moment. That we see as well.

  491. Pentecost was celebrated and it was a a memorial of another

  492. origin story. Actually, it was the origin

  493. story. Of how the people of God, the

  494. Jewish people, is the origin story of how they got the law.

  495. And you to understand how important this is, just read the

  496. gospels and see. How serious they were about the

  497. law. The law.

  498. Gave them their national identity.

  499. It gave them their. Access to Yahweh the the law

  500. gave. Them their their way to live and

  501. be made right with God and cleanse.

  502. The law. Was their foundation and.

  503. Pentecost. Was their yearly time to

  504. remember their origin story? Remember when God gave them the

  505. law? And here's.

  506. Why this is such a? Great good news.

  507. Message for us to. Remember their origin.

  508. Story of the law because. It, it isn't as good as, you

  509. know, just God handing out the the the tablets and them

  510. obeying. It was a very messy moment in

  511. the story of God and his people in the book of Exodus.

  512. It happened in chapter 32. Moses goes up on Mount Sinai to

  513. receive the law and in a in a. Overlap a parallel.

  514. It's very similar to the. Pentecost moment, Moses is

  515. leaving people that are eagerly waiting for what they're going

  516. to receive. And they're waiting and they're

  517. waiting. And they give us the reminder

  518. that in waiting, sometimes we just get sick of waiting and we

  519. do things that are not good for our soul.

  520. And then they're waiting for Moses to come back.

  521. They get restless and they remember.

  522. There's this, There is this way that they.

  523. Used to worship when they were still slaves in Egypt.

  524. So they talked to Aaron who was supposed to be in charge.

  525. They donate. All the gold they could.

  526. Find and jewelry and earrings and they give it all to Aaron

  527. and Aaron. This is his.

  528. Story. Not mine.

  529. Aaron just throws it into a big hot pot and outcomes a golden

  530. calf. Oops, I got all this gold and

  531. now I got a golden calf when Moses comes down with.

  532. The tablets of the law. Specifically the 10

  533. commandments. He doesn't find people waiting

  534. in one accord with obedience and expectation.

  535. He finds people who are committing.

  536. Idol worship of the worst. Kind.

  537. They're. Worshipping the idol of the

  538. country that enslaved them. And if you read the story?

  539. I'll save you the graphic. Details.

  540. It isn't just Idol. Worship, but it's also.

  541. It's just. Revelry and immorality, not

  542. unlike the way that, you know, our, our parties and festivals

  543. happen here on this side of heaven in, in our country.

  544. It's like, you know, you get these big stage and the light

  545. show and then just immorality. Breaks out.

  546. And Moses comes down, he says what is going on?

  547. He came to bring the law, and he finds them.

  548. Lawless. And without going into a whole

  549. Bible study on XS32A, very simple reaction happened.

  550. He basically drew a line in the sand and he gave the people an

  551. option. Choose today.

  552. Do you want to be a Pagan idol worshipper committing immorality

  553. and dishonouring the God who saved you?

  554. It's a good question. I want to consider that

  555. question. Or do you want to commit?

  556. Yourself to Yahweh. And he drew a line in the sand.

  557. He said choose and. The the.

  558. The Levites came and they. Chose to be with.

  559. Moses. And so he gives them this

  560. commandment and and and this is. This is the Old Testament.

  561. This is the law. Exodus 32 it.

  562. Says Then he said to them, Moses thus says.

  563. The Lord God of. Israel let every man put his

  564. sword on his side and go in and out from the entrance to

  565. entrance throughout the camp, and let every man kill his

  566. brother, every man his companion, and every man his

  567. neighbor. So the sons of.

  568. Levi did, according. To the word of Moses and about

  569. 3000 men. Of the people fell that day.

  570. This is just such a. Reminder that the law is

  571. perfectly just and if you want to be someone who lives.

  572. By the law, you will die. By the law, the.

  573. Law was given and it just wiped out 3000 people who were

  574. completely. Off the rails we've.

  575. All sinned and fallen short of the glory.

  576. Of the God. The The law is not our savior.

  577. The law points out our need. For a savior.

  578. And so with that story in mind, on Pentecost, when they're

  579. remembering their origin story of the law, they remember the

  580. tablets, they remember the golden calf, they remember the

  581. the line in the sand. Peter stands up to make sense of

  582. everything. Remember the people said, what

  583. does all of this mean? Their Pentecost moment.

  584. And Peter stands up and he starts preaching.

  585. Prophecy fulfilled in this moment, preaches from Joel, who

  586. said that in these days the Lord is going to pour out His Spirit

  587. on all flesh. It's happened on Pentecost,

  588. starts preaching from the Psalms and he shows that.

  589. It was. Always God's plan to raise his

  590. anointed one from the grave starts preaching.

  591. The resurrected Christ. He starts preaching.

  592. The the the the the divinity of Christ, that his.

  593. Holy 1 and in all of these things as these people are

  594. trying to make sense of all of these phenomena in acts.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  595. Chapter 2. Verse 30.

  596. Seven, it says, when they. Heard this, they were cut to the

  597. heart. And said to Peter and the rest

  598. of the apostles, men and brethren, what?

  599. Should we do about? This.

  600. What should we do about the the power?

  601. Of the resurrection, the fulfillment of prophecy, and the

  602. pouring out of the spirit and the.

  603. Spirit is poured out doesn't just give you a spirit.

  604. Filled preaching it gives you a. Spirit filled response where the

  605. the power of the Spirit is. Opening their hearts, it's

  606. cutting them with a conviction that they need to change their

  607. lives. This is the origin story of the

  608. Church and in. The question of what should we

  609. do? Peter begins to separate the.

  610. Church. From the Old Testament law

  611. abiding Torah worshipping Jews, he doesn't say, you know, go see

  612. your priest and make yourself clean and.

  613. Abide by the law. And and and do all of the things

  614. according. To your best.

  615. Execution of the 10 commandments.

  616. What he says is repent, change your mind about who Christ is in

  617. your life, turn to Jesus and let everyone of you be baptized.

  618. You know this. This is a question I hope some

  619. of you are asking. What do I actually do?

  620. The answer is stop going towards the ways.

  621. Of Idol. Worship and immorality and stop

  622. worshipping the world that enslaves you and come into the

  623. real Kingdom. That's repentance and baptism in

  624. the name of Jesus. And then he says this.

  625. That's what you need to. Do that's a.

  626. Decision you need to make and then he says, and you shall

  627. receive not condemnation, you're going to receive a gift.

  628. And when you repent and you're baptized into the name of Jesus,

  629. and you join the Kingdom. Of God the Spirit falls out all

  630. flesh. It's not just for Moses, not

  631. just. For Peter, it's not just for a

  632. pastor or a worship leader. You come in and now you're part

  633. of the born again Kingdom. Believers, this is the church he

  634. says you'll receive. The gift.

  635. Now listen. This is the the.

  636. Fulfillment of the Pentecost Memorial for the promises to you

  637. and your children are all who are.

  638. Far off. As many as the Lord.

  639. God would called. And with many.

  640. Other words, he testified. And exhorted them be saved from

  641. this perverse generation and. Once you have the exodus. 32 in

  642. your mind and listen to. Peter Peter's Drawn.

  643. A line in the sand, Peter says. Some of you want to go the ways

  644. of Egypt, some of you want to go the ways of America, Some of you

  645. want to go the ways of Hollywood.

  646. Some. But that's.

  647. Perverse generation and the Church is.

  648. This. Bright light for every

  649. generation that says repent, get the line in the sand.

  650. You go this way, what's going to happen?

  651. You'll die by the law. You'll die by religion, you'll

  652. die by your own morality. You'll die by trying to be good.

  653. Says be saved and come into the people of God and look what

  654. happens then those in verse 41 who gladly.

  655. Received his word, were baptized.

  656. And on that day, how many about 3000 souls were added?

  657. We now have the collision of covenants.

  658. The law comes and crushes 3000 people.

  659. Lest anyone think that religion will save you, that morality

  660. will save you, that you can get to heaven by being a good

  661. person, that you can understand how to just.

  662. Be a little. Bit better than the next guy.

  663. You want to stay on the line of you trying to figure it out and

  664. you will be crushed. By the law, Paul will say the

  665. the letter of the law kills. But here's the gospel.

  666. Good news and here is the church's origin story on the

  667. first Pentecost 3000 were crushed, 3000 were dead on the

  668. new Pentecost 3000 come alive and this is now the origin that

  669. puts us into motion of who we are the.

  670. Letter of the law kills the spirit.

  671. Of the law brings life, Jesus says you're going to be the salt

  672. of the earth. You're going to be the light.

  673. Of the world. You're going to be the.

  674. Picture of where? The presence and the power and

  675. the. Life of God lives. 3000 saved

  676. and baptized the law can't save the spirit brings life and so

  677. you put all of those things together and you find the

  678. beginning of the. Church is still the church.

  679. The beginning of the Church is is the miraculous.

  680. Birth. Don't expect it to look.

  681. The same the church has already been born, but but remember that

  682. God always has these moments of miraculous.

  683. Birth. To let you know that.

  684. This is. According to his plan, the

  685. nation of Israel born Abraham and Sarah miraculous.

  686. Birth the savior of the world. Born of a virgin, miraculous

  687. birth and the. Church, God's salt.

  688. And earth and light and power and presence and Holy Spirit was

  689. born miraculously. By the power of God.

  690. And we now live in the church that represents those things to

  691. the world. If you are.

  692. Here and you don't know the. Power that we're all.

  693. Remembering that we. We, we, we've.

  694. Experienced for. The free gift of the Spirit.

  695. This is going to be your origin story.

  696. At some point. Every one of us had our own

  697. origin story with God and it was very similar.

  698. It was a miraculous moment where it was undeniable that God's

  699. presence invaded. Our life and his.

  700. Spirit made us alive, and now we.

  701. Are part of the. Church, that's been his hands

  702. and his feet and his body on earth for 2000 years.

  703. And any one of you that don't have your origin story yet?

  704. This is where it will start. God will come and invade.

  705. Your life with the power. Of his presence you'll be.

  706. Cut to the heart and say what? Do I do?

  707. Here's the answer. Repent and join the Kingdom.

  708. This is the point of every time we gather is to remember where

  709. we came from, remember who we are, remember where we're going.

  710. And so let me just end with a word of encouragement.

  711. For all of us. In this moment, I hope.

  712. That as you. Consider the origin story and

  713. all the. Ways that God just put.

  714. All of this together perfectly on Pentecost with everyone's

  715. there and he's reversing Babel and he's he's giving us the

  716. Spirit and not the law or the spirit and fulfillment of the

  717. law. It's just such a reminder to me

  718. that. God has a.

  719. Plan and it is so perfect and there's times where we don't see

  720. it in. Full, but just celebrate.

  721. This moment where God's plan was on display in Technicolor and he

  722. was putting it all together and he was saying I have been

  723. planning this all along and may you be encouraged.

  724. That. It's not just for his.

  725. Church it's. Not just for the big.

  726. Stories we read about in the Bible God has.

  727. A purpose and a plan for every single one of our lives.

  728. His plan is perfect, His timing is perfect, and He has a way.

  729. To put it all together, that causes all of.

  730. Us to marvel he can take tragedies and turn them into the

  731. fulfillment of something beautiful and he'll do that for.

  732. Your life, if I could leave you here.

  733. With something, let me just leave you with the the promise

  734. of the word in Romans chapter. 8 Paul says likewise, the Spirit

  735. also helps us. In our weakness for we don't

  736. even know what we should. Pray.

  737. But the Spirit himself makes intercessions for us with

  738. groanings which cannot be uttered now that we.

  739. Have the Spirit. We know how to talk to God.

  740. We'll get more into the weeds with tongues and languages and

  741. but the main language that you're going to get when you

  742. have the Holy Spirit is the language of.

  743. Prayer by the power of. The Holy Spirit you know now

  744. have the ability. To talk to God.

  745. And in the very same thought, Paul goes on to say, And we know

  746. that all. Things work together for good

  747. for those who love God and are called.

  748. According to the purpose. That the church worked.

  749. All things of the Old Testament and made it all for good

  750. according to his purpose and that's.

  751. True of your life. God will redeem the tragedy and

  752. make it beautiful. God will meet you with His

  753. presence and give you life, and it is for everybody.
