  3. host. This is episode number six

  4. Church structure and membership. And today I'm here with two of

  5. our founding pastors will end Tanner.

  6. So guys, want you to say hello and then just so our listeners

  7. can get to know you guys a little bit better.

  8. Tell us today if you are a early bird in the morning or do you

  9. tend to sleep? So I am will.

  10. And I most certainly an early bird.

  11. That's me I like to wake up as early as I can and get my

  12. routine in before the kids wake up and just kind of get some

  13. alone time. So, I will say not all of us are

  14. that way. But yeah.

  15. Yeah this man eats the same thing every single day for

  16. breakfast. Like I need to let the listener,

  17. understand the same thing. There's health and structure.

  18. There is bro, is I'm trying to I'm trying to affirm you

  19. publicly just wanna share what Is for everybody.

  20. Yes, yes, it is a bowl of oatmeal with some butter and

  21. bananas. You remember that time we went

  22. on an eight mile run and literally 20 minutes before you

  23. were crushing that dumb like the bro, how are you about to run?

  24. Like, how are you doing with that in your stomach here?

  25. Like, but don't worry about my process process.

  26. Trust the problem. I did, I did I did stop a few a

  27. little bit early on that run though and I did have to walk

  28. back. So I think I got to Technically

  29. complete. I thought maybe if I didn't eat

  30. it all with him, I feel that. Yeah my name is Tanner I'm

  31. definitely an early bird. Sits kind of always been that

  32. way. Even back like high school, me

  33. and my dad would get up for school and go to the gym.

  34. Yeah, I'm kind of same way. I just, I enjoy the routine.

  35. I'm a coffee guy. I love to read.

  36. So I just I love the routine in the morning.

  37. Yeah. So follow up questions.

  38. And yes. Well onto the bus.

  39. Yes. Do you also eat the same thing

  40. for back? No, I have the same few things,

  41. definitely, so I Which you do my guy.

  42. I wouldn't say like I'm a little weird.

  43. Like, if I'm working out, I'll do certain things.

  44. If I'm not, I might eat on. Might not, I have multiple

  45. processes. We'll get.

  46. We'll get there. We'll get there.

  47. All right off, he's always happens.

  48. That's right, that's right. So now that everybody knows your

  49. morning routine. There we go.

  50. Let's jump in. So we've heard a lot about

  51. Ministry, philosophy and Theology and we walk through a

  52. lot of stuff in our episodes together and we're Starting to

  53. wrap things up and this episode today, we want to have a

  54. conversation about the nuts and bolts of what is the church.

  55. Like we really boil it all the way down.

  56. How does Port City Church operate and who are the people

  57. that compose? It?

  58. It's a good question, Laura. So I'm going to talk a little

  59. bit about the structure and then we'll we'll kind of talk about,

  60. you know, the people that compose it went kind of bounced

  61. around. So poor City Church is a church

  62. that is structured in particular way where Jesus ruled Ed and

  63. congregationally accountable and just to be clear different

  64. different churches do this different ways and all of them

  65. should be deriving that from scripture.

  66. Jesus ruled means like, you know, the Big C Churchill here.

  67. A lot of times Big C versus a little see Church, Big C church.

  68. Just means the church everywhere.

  69. All people. All believers, you know,

  70. converted saved. Love the Lord all across the

  71. world. The little C church is the local

  72. expression. Of kind of that Global reality

  73. of coming into people to one another.

  74. So our church is Jesus ruled and and that means that he is the

  75. one we answer to. He's the one we follow.

  76. He's the one we submit to. He has the final word on his

  77. church, both little C and Big C. And so we were ruled by Jesus,

  78. his desires for our church laid out in the New Testament.

  79. Like the way that that God inspired the writers of the New

  80. Testament to set up the church. That's how we run things.

  81. Jesus is the boss. So we're Jesus rule were also

  82. Elder led the New Testament kind of lays this out all throughout

  83. Paul's letters in particular Peter talks about as well Elders

  84. Elder and Pastor are interchangeable terms and the

  85. elders are are entrusted with knowing leading feeding and

  86. protecting the congregation. The church decisions are made by

  87. the elders. The Elder team here is composed

  88. of two parts. It's we have Team elders and

  89. directional Elders. Team Elders lead their

  90. respective teams in the members and coordinators within that

  91. team. They are doing The Knowing

  92. leading feeding protecting of that team, the people there in

  93. the directional Elders oversee the church as a whole are

  94. charged with churchwide decisions and Leadership and

  95. there's there's accountability amongst the directional elders

  96. and team elders and they discuss and consult with one another.

  97. And it's important remember too that like the elders, both

  98. directional in team Within Church are still members of the

  99. church like where were shepherds before the Lord, but we're also

  100. like sheep. You know what I mean?

  101. Like, we, we follow God with with our brothers and sisters in

  102. the church, but we have been entrusted by God and are

  103. accountable to him for the Sheep.

  104. So a little bit when will gets into who the churches who the

  105. church is and how its structured are linked.

  106. They're not like they are separate questions but the way

  107. we run it and what it is are kind of like in Interlocked we

  108. will stand before God for how we've known lead fed and

  109. protected our people. So we take that very seriously

  110. and the last one is congregationally accountable all

  111. covered it members. Here are charged with with

  112. following the leadership of the elders but are to keep a

  113. watchful eye on us as well. Like, that's a mutual and we try

  114. to lay that out in every episode from things.

  115. Like the, the confession, the Covenant, all these things are a

  116. something that the members are committing to the elders are Are

  117. are the overseers, the leaders of, there's a mutual

  118. accountability. You know, when we're out of step

  119. with scripture, man, that's the congregation's job to like be

  120. like, hey, do you know, show me that in the scripture?

  121. You know, and really to walk through that in a spirit of

  122. unity and any concerns, bring them up a little be taken,

  123. serious will be reflected upon and, and that's kind of the the

  124. symbiotic relationship there between those two parties.

  125. Awesome. That was really helpful Tanner

  126. and so let's follow it that a little bit.

  127. You said congregationally accountable is a congregation,

  128. just the people who show up on Sunday morning to sit in the

  129. audience, who were the technical people in Port City Church, of

  130. course, in which you, which you got over there.

  131. William, that's a really good question.

  132. So I I think the way that I'm going to think about it or talk

  133. about it, talk about who's in, how do you even get in and then

  134. I'm gonna let Tanner, I'm a toss it back to Tanner for a little

  135. bit let Talk about what in the world does it even mean to be

  136. in. So, who's in, so when we talk

  137. about the congregation short, answer is no, it's not everybody

  138. that's here on Sunday morning. It is the group of baptized

  139. Believers in Christ who have covenanted together under the

  140. authority of the elders. So we recognize that everybody

  141. that comes to the service on Sunday morning may not fall into

  142. that category. And so how would they get in?

  143. How do you get in the first? Really is to get around to get

  144. around the people that are in in different ways and forms, we

  145. want you to get around and get to know us.

  146. The next thing is to apply. So we have a membership

  147. application and the reason for that application is so that we

  148. can get to know you and see if you fit that that mold of being

  149. a baptized believer in Christ. Whose Covenant who wants to come

  150. in it together under the authority of the elders.

  151. Once you fill out that application, then they'll be an

  152. interview and don't let that sounds super intimidating.

  153. There's not like, you know, there's not anything crazy, you

  154. know, serious going on in there. We just really want to make.

  155. Get to know. You better and understand what

  156. your story is. Make sure that you are a

  157. Believer, make sure that you have been baptized that.

  158. You can identify hey, there was a time before Christ Christ came

  159. into my life. I believed this and then now

  160. I've changed. This is how changing this is who

  161. I am now. And then we want to go through

  162. our theological or we want to make sure that you have

  163. theological agreement with our confession of faith.

  164. And we're going to walk through that a little bit and make sure

  165. that you kind of understand what we're saying when we say these

  166. different things. And then, lastly, we want to

  167. make sure that you understand the expectations of the

  168. membership, Covenant. So we want to make sure that you

  169. understand exactly what we're coming together to say that

  170. we're going to do with you and for you and that you're going to

  171. do as being a part of us as well.

  172. And then once that meeting happens, there's not going to be

  173. at the end of that meeting, you know, a decision of yes.

  174. Please come in or no. No, please don't.

  175. So that the actual decision as to, who is going to be a member

  176. is extended by the elders team as a whole.

  177. And so we'll go back and say, hey, this is, this is so, and so

  178. that wants to become a member and this is, you know, we

  179. believe that they meet the requirements of membership.

  180. And so, the Elder team would say, yeah, that's great.

  181. Let's extend membership to them and then the balls kind of in

  182. your court and so you know we're going to go back to you and say

  183. hey you know, based on our interview and what you've told

  184. us we believe that you are part of this group of baptized

  185. believers. Believe that you understand?

  186. The Covenant that we're asking you to sign and so we want to

  187. ask. Will you?

  188. Do you want to sign this? Do you want to be a part of our

  189. family? And then it's up to you whether

  190. or not you want a covenant with us.

  191. And then I'm going to let em, let Tanner talk a little bit

  192. about what it means to Covenant with us.

  193. And even before I do that, I want to just build on something

  194. you were saying like and again like what the church is like,

  195. when you read the New Testament, it is a body of people.

  196. It is a it is a family is literally Christ's body of which

  197. he is the head. Ed.

  198. And so, like, man, we can never no human being, can know, beyond

  199. a shadow of a doubt who all of the Believers within even their

  200. membership. Exactly are like, we are not the

  201. Holy Spirit, but the New Testament, paints, a picture

  202. that the church is, like, the overseers in the, the stewards

  203. of, who claims to be God's people, because we are

  204. representing the Risen Lord to our city, to our neighbors.

  205. We are Salt and Light, Eight is so like, man, if we're flipping

  206. on these things, like if you're listening, you been rocking with

  207. every episode like man. We're not we're not trying to

  208. create like a purity complex. We don't we don't put our trust

  209. in these things. We have our trust in the Lord in

  210. the way he's laid, these processes out in his word and by

  211. the best of our abilities, what we're going to do.

  212. But yeah, this is not like super formal man.

  213. Like if you love the Lord, if you're in Christ, you could

  214. articulate that sometimes people just, you know, struggle with

  215. articulating, their story will walk with you in that.

  216. But yeah like if you're not super sure you're a Believer you

  217. can see what be dangerous to affirm you into membership of a

  218. church. We don't want to Aid in the

  219. self-deception that that would be you know like that would not

  220. be loving to say you're a member of God's body when you're not

  221. right. You know talk about it.

  222. Let's talk about hey do you want to be a member of the body you

  223. know so all this stuff sometimes like to the point you're making

  224. will like is not formal man. This is like this is what the

  225. church has been doing for thousands of years.

  226. We're gonna be like there were hundreds of years or Was getting

  227. interviewed. You know what I mean?

  228. Like I mean this stuff has been going on forever.

  229. So this is just by God's grace how we gonna do it.

  230. It was also just want to point out that it's not, you know,

  231. it's not we're not saying, you know, do not struggle with sin

  232. anymore. We're sure do.

  233. There's not a there's not a, we're not at nothing to work

  234. with that Testament talks about. Yeah, we're not.

  235. And we have people, we are people that still struggles and

  236. they're still walking and trying to grow in Jesus.

  237. And so, right, that's not a thing at all.

  238. Well, now we just Just we just gone.

  239. We're gonna lift the hood seal of the Lord.

  240. All right. There.

  241. You Covenant into, are you coming into these other people

  242. who are doing that as well? And do you know what that means

  243. and let's rock. Yeah.

  244. What does that mean at our church to be in to be a member

  245. really in a lot of ways? What it comes down to is to, you

  246. know, you're living a transformed life by the Risen

  247. Lord Jesus. And you're going to live a

  248. three-dimensional life of up in and out.

  249. That's that's our core rhythms. We are going to worship God

  250. together. Up.

  251. We are going to chase him. We're in the where we're walking

  252. in those rhythms together. We are living out.

  253. The one another's of scripture together and we are we are

  254. seeking the good of our city. We're loving people and hoping

  255. to see lost people get saved, you know, we're building,

  256. building insiders up, inviting Outsiders in and then

  257. practically man, what that means is like you're a part of the

  258. gathered body on Sundays. You are coming to team meetings.

  259. You are come, you're in a group, you're running plays in the

  260. city. Man, you're just committed to

  261. God's glory in your life and in the the life of our body here

  262. are local church family. You know that's really what it

  263. means to follow up. Excellent.

  264. All right. You guys that is all that we

  265. have today from Port City Church podcast, mayor lister's live and

  266. powered by Jesus. I will talk to you all again.
