  1. This morning we're actually going to be reading from Genesis

  2. 25. If you do not have a Bible,

  3. there's a Bible under your chair, so I invite you to grab

  4. that now. And our reading will actually be

  5. on page 18 and on page 20, page 18 and page 20 in Genesis

    Genesis 25:27

  6. chapter 25 verse 27, it reads, When the boys grew up, Esau was

  7. a skilled hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet

  8. man dwelling in tents. Isaac loved Esau because he ate

  9. of his game, but Rebecca loved Jacob.

  10. When Isaac was old and his eyes were dim so that he could not

  11. see, he called Esau his older son, and said to him, My son,

  12. and he answered, Here I am. He said, Behold, I am old, I do

  13. not know the day of my death. Now then, take your weapons,

  14. your quiver in your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game

  15. for me, and prepare for me delicious food such as I love,

  16. and bring it to me so that I may eat, that my soul may bless you

  17. before I die. This is the word of the Lord.

  18. What's going on Port City family and friends.

  19. How are we doing good. Well, my name is Tanner and

  20. y'all Port City is the type church where we just want

  21. everybody to say I got your back to somebody else, you know like

  22. you were not made to do life alone.

  23. And we're the we're the type church.

  24. We just want to have each other's back.

  25. You know life is hard, sends the enemy God is good and we just

  26. want to have each other's back. Nobody's perfect here.

  27. We're just stumbling for it. But if you're looking for a

  28. place where somebody is going to look not just for their own

  29. back, but watch your back, we got a place for you here.

  30. So what I want to do is I want to pray one more time for a time

  31. and God's word. And then we're going to see some

  32. of why we need to have each other's back here today.

  33. OK, so let's, let's pray our our Father, we are so grateful that

  34. you are so good and that you, God, chase us down when we don't

  35. want you. We chase you chase us down when

  36. we think we don't need you. And then you bring us in the

  37. community together and you teach us how to care for one another.

  38. Before all we cared about was ourselves and getting what we

  39. wanted. And now you've opened our eyes

  40. to care for others. So God help us have each other's

  41. back. And if there are people here who

  42. who need that type of community, God, would you lead them to see

  43. your goodness and and take that step.

  44. We love you. Pray in Jesus name, Amen.

  45. Y'all have y'all seen these these videos of the dads that

  46. show up to their adult kids house like inspecting

  47. everything. Y'all seen this like looking at

  48. the just just looking around. They get out the car and they're

  49. like gutters look full, you know, like and it's I love these

  50. videos a because they're so true.

  51. Like everybody's got that that parental figure, older person.

  52. There's something in the dad mode that activates where you

  53. just see what things could be if you don't deal with them, you

  54. know, they're just, they're just pointing out everything.

  55. I turned the faucet off after I went to the bathroom in there.

  56. It took 2 seconds to stop dripping.

  57. And like behind that look and that usually it's the oldest kid

  58. is just like dad, please stop. Like please just just sit down.

  59. Just just enjoy your time here. But y'all, there is a vigilance

  60. that experience brings, is there not?

  61. That dad knows if you don't handle that drip, that's going

  62. to be $400.00 more a year in water.

  63. You know, I have been under the crawl space because I didn't

  64. clean my gutters and I've had to redo everything down there.

  65. So there's something about that dad mode vigilance that knows in

  66. the home ownership game is not just a drip on a dress that's

  67. going to ruin your house. That's what homeowners know,

  68. right? And y'all in a, in a, in a more

  69. serious way, what we're going to see in today's text is like

  70. there is no sin. That is just a small in

  71. isolation. Don't impact nothing Sin.

  72. Y'all sin is the leaking, dripping thing hitting your

  73. floor that you're ignoring that is going to burn your house down

  74. like it's all connected and it's all going to fall apart.

  75. OK? That's the reality of what the

  76. Bible teaches. That's what we're going to see

  77. in Isaac's story, who is every bit a scoundrel as his dad was,

  78. but in a different way. So we're going to look at sin,

  79. then we're going to look at Grace, and then we're going to

  80. have two resolutions of fighting sin.

  81. That is our plan. If you are ready, let me hear

  82. you say I'm ready, OK? I want to make sure we

  83. understand the story first of where we're, we're jumping in on

  84. Isaac's story first. OK, So Isaac marries Rebecca at

  85. the age of 40. OK, Genesis chapter 24, the

    Genesis 24 chapter mention

  86. Bible says that she is barren, OK?

  87. And then he prays for her to get pregnant.

  88. And at the age of 60, they they have kids.

  89. OK, Now it's a pretty rough pregnancy.

  90. And, and basically Rebecca cries out to the Lord and says, what

  91. is going on here? And God says 2 nations are in

  92. you like you're having twins, OK.

  93. And it's a it's a wrestling match.

  94. And this statement gets made that the older will serve the

  95. younger. And in a couple of weeks we'll

  96. we'll dive into what that means. And that's not today's sermon,

  97. OK? But this statement gets made

  98. that unconventionally it for that time period, the older who

  99. is the first born going to get everything.

  100. That will not be the case. The older will serve the

  101. younger. So God is doing something

  102. different here. OK, Now the twins get born, all

  103. right, The the next thing that we read about them after the

  104. birth is one of the things we read today, so I'm going to read

  105. it again. OK, so it's in chapter 25,

  106. verses 27 and 28. That's what the Bible said.

  107. When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter.

  108. And Esau's the older, OK? So remember, the older will

  109. serve the younger. God himself told his family

  110. that. OK, a man of the field.

  111. While Jacob was a quiet man dwelling in tents, Isaac loved

  112. Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebecca loved Jacob.

  113. Let's just be clear, this is preferential treatment baked

  114. into the marriage over their two kids from the junk.

  115. Are y'all with me? OK, that's just a passing

  116. statement describing reality. All right now, the next scene in

  117. their life, which we're not going to talk about right now,

  118. will return to in our future series.

  119. Here with Saints and Scoundrels is the the selling of the

  120. Birthright story where basically Esau is hungry, comes in from

  121. work and says I need some food. And Jacob, what you'll notice is

  122. he's a bit of a trickster and Esau's an idiot.

  123. And so those two seem to go together that Esau was like

  124. being the oldest, the covenant promises of Yahweh mean nothing

  125. to me. And then Jacob is ready to take

  126. advantage of his weakness. So there's this trickster

  127. dynamic at play. But we also have to that Esau

  128. was a fool, right? So both are true.

  129. So Esau says, what good is the birthright to me?

  130. I'm about to die of starvation, let me get some food.

  131. And he goes, here's my birthright and gives it to him.

  132. OK, now the next scene that you need to know about in this Esau,

  133. Jacob, mom, dad dynamic comes at the end of chapter 26.

  134. Again, I'm not going to read it, but this is just what the Bible

  135. or I'm not. I'm not going to have you go

  136. there, but this is what the Bible says.

  137. When Esau was 40 years old, he took Judith, the daughter of

  138. Birai the Hittite to be his wife and base Math the daughter of

  139. Eli the Hittite and they made life bitter for Isaac and

  140. Rebecca. What that means is Isaac, who is

  141. the son of Abraham, who Abraham took his son, having the right

  142. wife from his familial background so seriously that

  143. it's like a whole chapter of the Long Bite.

  144. We just did a whole sermon on that.

  145. The oldest of Isaac so views God's covenant is not that

  146. serious and I don't care about it and I'm not going to take it

  147. that serious. I'm gonna I'm a marry not one

  148. foreign wife, but two. OK, so now you're Jacob.

  149. You prefer this son. You've allowed that to fester in

  150. your marriage. That son has sold his birthright

  151. and now marry 2 foreign women. OK, now go to chapter 27 verses

  152. one through 4. When Isaac was old and his eyes

  153. were dimmed so that he could not see, he called Esau his older

  154. son, And he said to him, My son. And he answered, Here I am.

  155. He said, Behold, I am old, I do not know the day of my death.

  156. Now then take your weapons, your quiver and your bow and go out

  157. to the field and hunt game for me and prepare for me delicious

  158. foods such as I love and bring it to me so that I may eat, so

  159. that my soul may bless you before I die.

  160. Y'all. We will return to this story.

  161. It's a massive story in the Bible.

  162. We'll return to it from Jacob's perspective in the future.

  163. And, and there's a lot of dynamics here, but I think what

  164. gets missed a lot when we talk about Esau being a fool and

  165. Jacob being a trickster is that Isaac was a passive terrible

  166. leader, yo. He festered an environment in

  167. his family after being told by God himself how it should go.

  168. He didn't connect any dots when his son saw the birthright.

  169. He doesn't connect any dots when he takes 2 foreign wives he

  170. doesn't like have a family meeting of hey we should stop

  171. preferring one son over the other wife.

  172. Like this is not what Yahweh would want.

  173. And then on his deathbed he's ready to make a blessing, not

  174. based upon what God had said, but based on his stomach.

  175. And not only that, scholars tell us that in this time period, the

  176. way that a blessing was supposed to go is get the whole crew

  177. together, all the kids think Genesis 49 when Jacob does it,

  178. he brings everybody together and puts hands on all of them.

  179. So what Isaac does is he calls a secret meeting and he says, let

  180. me get Esau and let me get the blessing that I want to give you

  181. based on the food I want to eat from you and doesn't let Rebecca

  182. and Jacob be present. Now, simultaneously, Jacob and

  183. Rebecca know what they doing, OK?

  184. And we can talk about the trickster dynamic and God is

  185. using everybody's weakness to weave his own story, and we can

  186. get to how redemptive God is. But before we do that, we just

  187. have to recognize that Isaac blew it.

  188. He just blew it. He was passive.

  189. He was not a leader. He was afraid.

  190. He was driven by preference. And you know, what this shows us

  191. is that sin comes in many forms, but it always leads to

  192. destruction. The Bible says that Esau's

  193. marrying of those two women made life bitter for Isaac and

  194. Rebecca. Isn't it ironic?

  195. He preferred him, and then he made his life bitter through who

  196. he married, right? Eventually, after the Jacob and

  197. Esau story in chapter 27, Rebecca never gets to see Jacob

  198. again because of this. He has this.

  199. They have to send him away because Esau is going to kill

  200. him. There's such strife and tension,

  201. right? So y'all, sin comes in many

  202. forms, but it always leads to destruction.

  203. Passivity can lead to just as much destruction as outright

  204. control and anger. And some of the sins that get a

  205. little more Showtime, if you will, of the the rage and

  206. alcoholism and some of these things which are awful sins.

  207. But so is passivity. So is a lack of leadership,

  208. fear, not trusting God and letting your preferences drive

  209. thing, not God's promises. OK, so now that we understand

  210. what's at play, I want to talk about sin and then let's talk

  211. about grace. Y'all ready?

  212. Hey, number one, sin has deep roots.

  213. Yeah. What exactly is sin?

  214. Sin is anything we say, think or do that is it not in alignment

  215. with who God is and what he says?

  216. It's anything that is not in alignment with who God is and

  217. what he says. And before you ever sin, we have

  218. been born into having a sin nature.

  219. We are falling into sin. We have a sinful nature.

  220. So a lot of times we think an action is sinful, which it is.

  221. But before you sin, you are a Sinner sinners sin.

  222. Does that make sense? Like you sin because you are

  223. sinful. And that's, that's kind of what

  224. it means to have a sin nature at its core in the, the, the

  225. original sin of Adam and Eve, what they did is Eve heard from

  226. the deceptive serpent. So there's a deceptive nature

  227. baked into what sin is, which we'll talk about a lot.

  228. But she thought, if I eat this, I will be made like God.

  229. The Bible says when she saw that it was good to the eyes that it

  230. would taste good, it would make her like God, She took of it and

  231. she ate it and she gave some to Adam and he ate it.

  232. So at its core, sin is saying, I can run my life.

  233. I got it do not need God is to turn our back on God and to say

  234. I got this it's to say I'm in charge and we'll even let this

  235. is what's so ironic is the sinners in the Bible from the

  236. first page. If you go read if you've never

  237. read the story of Cain and Abel. We talk about it a lot here

  238. because it's kind of like, if you're wondering what this whole

  239. Sin Project is going to look like after Adam and Eve, the

  240. first story should give you a good clue.

  241. It's got murder. OK, lying and murder.

  242. But the great irony is that the the first person to talk to God

  243. after the garden isn't able. It's Cain.

  244. So it shows that we can keep God in the car, but we're driving

  245. it. Does that make sense?

  246. Do y'all remember your driver's Ed days?

  247. Anybody. Oh my goodness.

  248. You remember they had the brake pedal but they have no control.

  249. Like every time I see those drivers Ed cars now, I feel for

  250. those people. I'm like they got in a car with

  251. me, they weren't getting paid. It took money to get somebody to

  252. get in the car with me when I was 1516 years old.

  253. Like in the reality is they know how vulnerable they are.

  254. That's why we're paying them. OK y'all sin is driving the car

  255. you are born where sins driving it.

  256. So even if you think I want to be a good person and I want to

  257. follow rules, you're born into sin.

  258. Means you're driving the car, you're in charge.

  259. So is liking food a sin? Isaac liked his son's food.

  260. Is that a sin? No, but a sinful web was born in

  261. his life where his preference drove his life.

  262. So at what moment did it become the sin?

  263. I don't know when it led him to make decisions based on what his

  264. stomach wanted and not what God said.

  265. That's the reality. His stomach and preferences

  266. drove his life, not what God said.

  267. Which shows that sin is deceptive.

  268. It wants you to think whatever you need to think to keep you

  269. driving. Does that make sense?

  270. Like God, God told Cain, be careful, Sin's desire is to

  271. destroy you, to rule over you. Genesis chapter 4.

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  272. So sin isn't going to like sin wants you to play stupid.

  273. Y'all know what playing stupid is right?

  274. It's where you act like something isn't rooted in a real

  275. motive. You're like, oh, just like the

  276. food more, right? Isaac could have just said

  277. what's the big deal? I just like it's food more.

  278. That's not a sin. You can even leverage by Belize

  279. to justify what you doing. You playing stupid.

  280. And you know who's really good at calling adults I'm playing

  281. stupid kids y'all? I was a teacher.

  282. They know when you got favorites.

  283. I called that dude my guy day 2 and I've never called anybody

  284. else my guy. Guess what?

  285. They going to tell you that's your favorite student?

  286. What you mean you called him my guy?

  287. And I'm like in my head, I'm like his show is his show is I

  288. love that dude. You're right, my girl.

  289. And also my kids like they know I love coffee and they know the

  290. routes that are fastest to get home and they know when I go a

  291. different way and one of them will say, why are you going that

  292. way, daddy? And another one will go because

  293. he want coffee. And they're right.

  294. They're right. Our stomachs Dr. our lives a lot

  295. more than we want to admit. Y'all just the bank account

  296. shows it. It ain't a trick, it ain't a

  297. secret. But the point is, we can play

  298. stupid. But we know I drove that way

  299. because I want some coffee. They know don't play stupid.

  300. But what Sin wants to do is make you think.

  301. That's an isolated decision, not rooted in depths of preference

  302. and desire, y'all? Sin is never just a trivial

  303. thing, it's always deeply rooted decision based.

  304. You're driving the car. So poor city church.

  305. Where are we justifying, minimizing and downplaying the

  306. effect that the role that sin is playing in our life?

  307. Where are we playing stupid #2 Sin has wide effects.

  308. So Isaac prefers Esau and it has devastating consequences in

  309. their family functionality, right?

  310. You would think that it just ends there, but it doesn't.

  311. In Genesis chapter 37. You could turn there if you

    Genesis 37 chapter mention

  312. want. Somebody else in this family

  313. does some preferring. OK, we're going to start in

  314. verse 2. These are the generations of

  315. Jacob. Who is the one that was not

  316. preferred? Joseph, being 17 years old, was

  317. pastoring the flock with his brothers.

  318. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhal and Zilpha, his father's

  319. wives, and Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father.

  320. Now Israel, that is, Jacob, loved Joseph more than any of

  321. his other sons because he was the son of his old age and he

  322. made him a robe of many colors. But when his brothers saw that

  323. their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him

  324. and could not speak peacefully to him.

  325. Wouldn't you think the sun, not preferred, would never do some

  326. preferring? Wouldn't you think he would know

  327. the devastating consequences preferring can have in

  328. somebody's heart? But y'all, as is so often the

  329. case, patterns repeat themselves, right?

  330. How many of us have devastating legacies?

  331. And many times we think we are stopping generations of things,

  332. and even our vows of how it won't play out plays a role in

  333. some other things that are going to play out.

  334. That's what sin does. So yes, God is Redeemer.

  335. By the way, God uses the brothers hatred of Joseph to

  336. bring about the salvation of Egypt.

  337. He he uses Esau and Jacob's dynamic to do some amazing

  338. things. That's a great sermon.

  339. We're going to talk about it, but just think about the

  340. consequences of our sin. Y'all y'all Joseph's brothers

  341. wanted to kill him, lie about it to their dad and hit it for

  342. years and God had to do a radical intervention to get them

  343. to confess it to anybody. The Hittite wives make it life

  344. miserable on Rebecca and Isaac Esau hating his brother Jacob

  345. running for years. Rebecca never gets to see her

  346. son again, y'all? Sin is never in isolation and it

  347. always has more of an impact than we want to admit it does.

  348. And when you think you're driving the car, you think you

  349. impact what it does, but you don't.

  350. It's a lie that you're in charge.

  351. That's part of the deal with sin.

  352. It wants us to think we control its impact, but we don't.

  353. There is no low cost sin. There is no thought that doesn't

  354. impact other things. That lustful thought has

  355. implications. It does that gossip is corroding

  356. trust in your workplace. It is.

  357. You think it's just between you and that person.

  358. It's it's it's having layers of consequences.

  359. Y'all sin wants us to think it comes at no cost with no long

  360. term effect. It wants us to think we get

  361. immediate pleasure with no long term consequences.

  362. It's kind of like when I was in college, I went to NC State and

  363. they did this Krispy Kreme challenge.

  364. This is the craziest thing I've ever heard some of y'all gonna

  365. do it one day. It's.

  366. You go run a mile, eat 12 Krispy Kreme doughnuts, and then run

  367. back. So they had a high Krispy Kreme

  368. culture. They make these at the State

  369. Fair in North Carolina. They make these Krispy Kreme

  370. burgers. So it's a glazed doughnut,

  371. cheeseburger, glazed doughnut. And I ate Amen.

  372. And I ate one in college and it was incredible for about 90

  373. seconds. And then your body is like, what

  374. did you just do? Like, are you an idiot?

  375. Y'all? That's kind of how sin works.

  376. It's like the Krispy Kreme burger.

  377. It's promising you nothing but bliss.

  378. But y'all, the the payoff is coming.

  379. And it's it's worth saying sometimes this white port city,

  380. we say we're wicked and weak. Our responses to being sinned

  381. against are understandable, right?

  382. So we need, we need to decipher this a little bit.

  383. Like it's understandable that he had a special love for Joseph

  384. because it was the son of the wife who died, right?

  385. So Rachel dies, this is her son, this is my son.

  386. This is the son of my old age. And he makes in the robe of many

  387. colors, right? It's understandable that he

  388. preferred him, right? And then it's understandable

  389. that the other brothers struggled with the preference.

  390. But others sin against us does not justify our sinful

  391. responses. But it's also true that sinners

  392. tend to respond sinfully to being sinned against.

  393. That's what we do. You sin against being sin.

  394. I'm sinning in response. OK.

  395. It doesn't excuse sin. Our stories never excuse sin.

  396. What your daddy did does not make you a like, not responsible

  397. for your sin. But it does inform what the path

  398. in your fight against sin is going to look like.

  399. Does that make sense? So our stories inform worship

  400. and they inform the fight against sin.

  401. We don't do story work to excuse sinful choices.

  402. We do story work to understand how weakness is leveraging that

  403. to create wickedness. Are you with me?

  404. And the more you are aware where that weakness creeps in, you can

  405. have people come around you and help you.

  406. So y'all, do we see the damage our sin has?

  407. Do we see that sin is powerful and deceptive and relentless?

  408. It does not stop. It's kind of like the leaky

  409. again. The leak in the house does some

  410. serious damage. You let it keep hitting that

  411. wood, it's going to rot it. That's how it works.

  412. Imagine if you had a neighbor who knocked on your door every

  413. day at 8:00 AM and said, hey neighbor, I'm going to try to

  414. kill you today and all of your kids and your family.

  415. I'm coming for you. You wouldn't be like, hey

  416. sweetie, just keep an eye on Fred.

  417. Fred's a little weird. Like I think it would create a

  418. little vigilance in you. Y'all, Let me tell you

  419. something. Sin is trying to kill you.

  420. Do you know that? Trying to layers of impact in

  421. your life for generations. It's playing a high stakes game.

  422. Sin never sleeps and it always plays for keeps.

  423. Facts. OK, OK, let's talk about Grace

  424. yo. Once we understand what sin

  425. really is, we could talk about grace.

  426. Yo. Grace is so costly.

  427. It's such a high cost. When we look at how Jesus was

  428. killed on the cross, it should communicate to us what the

  429. situation was he stepped into that make sense?

  430. Sin is a big deal. It took the death of Jesus to

  431. undo it. Y'all?

  432. Jesus was never driven by his stomach for one second.

  433. You ever heard that expression? Give him an inch, they'll take a

  434. mile. Jesus never gave sin an inch.

  435. There was no mile to take. There was no layers of impact of

  436. negative decisions he made. He was perfect.

  437. And at the end of his life he was rewarded with a violent,

  438. naked, publicly shaming, brutal death.

  439. It was brutal and the brutality of his death should show us the

  440. seriousness of what sin is and its consequences and the layers

  441. of it. Y'all lest we think I just like

  442. his food more, Lest lest we be like Isaac and play stupid, we

  443. should look at the cross to see the seriousness of sin.

  444. It is so costly. Sin cost the Son of God his

  445. life. The eternal Son of God had to

  446. die for sin, y'all, before the cross was ever done for you.

  447. You have to understand it was done by you.

  448. Your sin put him there and then the effect of God's grace.

  449. Y'all. What sin is and what it's doing

  450. in our lives is part of what Jesus came to undo.

  451. He didn't just come to to wipe away the record of sin, but to

  452. actually redeem the damage it was doing right.

  453. So if we just think sin is that I made a mistake, we think that

  454. Jesus's blood gives us like a a pass out of a mistake.

  455. But if our sin is doing damage, what Jesus does redeems damage.

  456. Does that make sense? So like where there is curse,

  457. he's going to undo it. The old Christmas song says far

  458. as the curse is found, he comes to make his blessings known far

  459. as the curse is found far as the curse is found far as far as the

  460. curse is found. The point is he's undoing like

  461. everything sin touches. Jesus wants to redeem every

  462. layer of generational sin in your family.

  463. He wants to undo it. Everything that think about it

  464. like this, when the water drips and rots the wood, forgiveness.

  465. If you think of forgiveness like the wood that didn't happen, you

  466. still can't walk there, right? Like if, like even if you

  467. removed all the rotted wood, it's still like unwalkable,

  468. unusable space. What redemption is, is it's it's

  469. redoing, it's rebuilding, it's remaking and usually using what

  470. was rotted to build something new.

  471. And now we can use that space. It's actually better, more

  472. usable than you could ever imagine space.

  473. But if we just view the cross is like some sort of I love you.

  474. And let's act like that didn't happen.

  475. We're not getting it. It's like we need to look in the

  476. face what it is so we can understand the depths of God's

  477. redemption for us. We're sin increase grace

  478. abounded all the more. Some of y'all are new to the

  479. Bible and you're like this sounds like a Jerry Springer

  480. episode preference and lies and twisted things.

  481. And those of us who've been around the Bible for a while

  482. want to say we tried to tell you that you know, we tried to tell

  483. you that the Bible is not for a bunch of good people.

  484. God is using Isaac isn't that crazy?

  485. God is using Esau. He's using Jacob, he's using

  486. Joseph, he's using these people even though they're sinners.

  487. That's what the Bible's all about.

  488. That's the gospel. It's not that once you're good,

  489. God can use you. You are dead, you are in

  490. trouble, you need mercy, and God comes and he saves you.

  491. So before we move on, because we're going to talk about

  492. fighting sin, I want to be abundantly clear to the

  493. unbelievers in the room. You can't fight sin when you're

  494. dead in sin. OK, so some of us are still dead

  495. in sin. You are born driving the car.

  496. You're running your life. You are dead in your sin.

  497. You need to get out the car. You need to get in the trunk.

  498. You need to like get out, OK. That is salvation.

  499. That is throwing yourself upon the mercies of God.

  500. That is saying I need a Savior that is crying out to God, that

  501. is begging him for mercy, that is going to God in faith,

  502. turning from your sin, breaking up with it.

  503. Because dead people don't need coaching.

  504. Dead people don't need a little help, Dead people don't need new

  505. clothes. Dead people need resurrection.

  506. That's the story of the Bible. The Bible isn't here to coach

  507. you to sinless. OK, so it is those who are alive

  508. in Christ that can fight sin as those who the Spirit of God in

  509. dwells that have been born again into a new reality.

  510. OK, but some of you that's not you and it's time to throw

  511. yourself upon the mercies of God and say I agree with you that my

  512. sin is that bad because right now if we really pushed you,

  513. part of you doesn't think it is and that's the problem.

  514. Part of you driving the car is like I'll put God in the car.

  515. He could sit right here. You know, he can even have the

  516. brake pedal, but that's not it. Like salvation comes when we

  517. totally let go of our our, even our defining what this is.

  518. You have to agree with Him. OK, For those of us who are in

  519. Christ, 2 resolutions for this week and your fight against sin.

  520. Are you ready? OK #1 resolve not to be hardened

  521. by the deceitfulness of sin. Hebrews 3.

  522. You could turn there with me. Hebrews 312 and 13.

  523. It says this. Take care, brothers, lest there

  524. be in any of you an evil unbelieving heart leading you to

  525. fall away from the living God, but exhort one another every

  526. day, as long as it is called today, that none of you may be

  527. hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

  528. Y'all sin is so deceitful. Deceitful means it's tricking

  529. you. You know, I heard it.

  530. I heard this little one liner on April Fool.

  531. April Fool's it's easier to fool somebody than to convince them

  532. they've been fooled. Thought that was a dope line.

  533. Mark Twain is easier to fool people than to convince them

  534. they've been fooled. That's what send us, right?

  535. So then that's what it's doing at all times.

  536. So it again, it leverages things like what's the big deal?

  537. It's just an isolated desire to isolated decision, an isolated

  538. thing over here. It's not connected to a deeper

  539. heart posture and who's driving the car and all this relax.

  540. That's too serious. That's what sin wants to do.

  541. And I'm concerned so many Christians, y'all don't realize

  542. the war that they're in. Like they just don't.

  543. They don't realize that when you're born again, this ain't

  544. heaven yet. People like the I heard it said

  545. recently like we live in a love story, but we live in a savage

  546. land. Like we live in a place like if

  547. we saw the spiritual reality like manifested physically, it

  548. would be like a war-torn country.

  549. That's what we live in, in terms of what your soul is up against

  550. and the powers that work to deceive you to leverage comfort,

  551. to leverage whatever it needs to suffering.

  552. I will use whatever in my power will squeeze the faith out of

  553. you. That's what sin the world and

  554. the devil want to do to you is absolutely destroy you.

  555. And they know you and they are working hard around the clock.

  556. And I think particularly these are the three words that came to

  557. my mind this week that I think the enemy wants to get us to say

  558. you ready. These are the three words.

  559. I got this. I think he wants to get pastors

  560. to get there. I think he'll wait till you're

  561. 50. He'll wait till it don't matter.

  562. Age don't matter. It don't matter how long you've

  563. been walking with God, how many sermons you heard, how many

  564. elevation songs you listen on the way to work.

  565. OK. What matters is getting your

  566. heart posture just creep into I got this.

  567. And once you're there, he's got you because that posture, you

  568. can dress it up. You can sit in groups, you can

  569. go to things, but it represents can nobody tell me nothing?

  570. I got this. And once you're there, you are

  571. in a dangerous spot. Listen to me.

  572. You don't got this. You don't.

  573. And apart from the grace of God, the Spirit of God, absolute

  574. miracle holding you, you will never got this.

  575. Y'all. One of the things I love about

  576. the addiction community. I love the 12 steps.

  577. I'm getting more and more familiar with them all the steps

  578. work if you work them, even if you've been going for 30 years,

  579. you never miss a meeting. Talk to these people.

  580. They don't trust themselves at all.

  581. They open every meeting with my name is Dwight and I'm an

  582. alcoholic. After 30 years, there is no I've

  583. been doing this long enough. I used to be an alcoholic.

  584. No, the steps work if you work them because they no longer give

  585. themselves the benefit of the doubt.

  586. And y'all think the Christian community which the addiction

  587. community was born out of the church, Hello.

  588. I think we need back from them this way of thinking about

  589. identity. Saying that is not to me that

  590. that Trump's how much grace I've received.

  591. We so quickly be like what about grace?

  592. What about grace? Yes, but it's because we are

  593. still actively in that much danger that we need to remind

  594. ourselves of that. My name is Tanner and I am a

  595. great Sinner. I have a great savior, but I am

  596. a great Sinner. OK.

  597. And I, I think that even this week y'all, I'll put something

  598. for two brothers in this church. Just a situation in my life

  599. where I said, hey, here's the situation, give me some

  600. thoughts. I already knew what I wanted to

  601. do. I already knew what I thought,

  602. but I did the right Christian pastor thing.

  603. What do you think? And both of them kind of just

  604. just rub, just just not even nudge just a got near an angle.

  605. And I was like in my heart, you know what 3 words about there, I

  606. got this. If only you knew my story.

  607. If only you knew. And we leverage that person.

  608. Don't know me that person this that that sermon don't apply to

  609. me this don't apply that word don't apply.

  610. And I had this posture of backup.

  611. And y'all listen, sin is not your friend.

  612. It's not it's never your friend. It never stops.

  613. It wants you to drift. It wants you to take a day off.

  614. One guy a few 100 years ago said this.

  615. When the waters of sin appear to be calm, when it looks calm,

  616. it's only because they're really deep.

  617. When the waters of sin appear very calm, it's usually only

  618. because they are very deep. You need to resolve deep in you

  619. that you don't get the benefit of the doubt.

  620. God's word does. God's people do.

  621. The Spirit does. Your flesh does not your

  622. instincts do not trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not

  623. on your own understanding. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel

  624. it. Prone to leave the God I love.

  625. Do you believe that? Where in your life, believer, is

  626. there an I got this posture? OK #2 Resolve to help others in

  627. their fight against sin. John Hebrews 3 has said This is

  628. said exhort one another every day as long as it is called

  629. today, that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of

  630. sin. By definition, that means you

  631. can't be sober about your own sin.

  632. It requires other people to be sober minded about your own sin.

  633. It's impossible to not be deceived unless you have others

  634. as a part of that conversation. Left to yourself you will be

  635. deceived. It is others exhortation that

  636. helps me not be deceived. Y'all see that we think again.

  637. I got it. So part of the I got this is I

  638. know how bad sin is and I'm managing it.

  639. Wrong answer like part of it is it is unmanageable.

  640. Are you with me? Sin is not manageable on your

  641. own. It's just not.

  642. You need the exhortation of others to help you.

  643. And so I just want to call some of us to consider other people

  644. in your fight against sin. You love the Lord, you listen to

  645. music, you read your word, you do your things, but the category

  646. of others still just it's a little murky in your mind.

  647. I just want to help you flush it out, which is we have to have

  648. each other's back. And it's it's it's I got to have

  649. yours. You got to have theirs.

  650. I got, you know, there's this holistic sobriety we have that

  651. we can't have alone. So it takes a village to stay

  652. sober. I mean, that really is kind of

  653. the the mindset because sin will trick all of us.

  654. That's just how it works. So consider others in their

  655. fight against sin. I want this to become a church

  656. where we got each other's back, where this where, where sin is

  657. the enemy, not other people. Or even when I'm sinned against,

  658. I know I'm a Sinner first. And I know like man, it's not

  659. really that person. It's sin, man, like it's sin

  660. like sin leveraging weakness, leveraging wickedness,

  661. leveraging this moment. And let's just be patient here.

  662. Sin is the enemy, not each other.

  663. I want us to become a church where we have each other's back.

  664. Y'all. Where we are praying for our

  665. victory over sin, Where the times we pray for each other

  666. isn't just I got a potential job promotion or grandma's about to

  667. die. But it's actually I need help

  668. against sin. And that's a normal thing to say

  669. where we say I need your help and we're not just like praying

  670. for you. It's like we go to war that

  671. others will win against sin. And if we don't have that

  672. mindset or if people are weird when they sin, you ain't wearing

  673. when you like. Are we reading this like that's

  674. the normal, that's the drift. We need this level of vigilance.

  675. We need dad mode, home ownership level vigilance and then some

  676. against sin. Every motive and a little bit

  677. you're like, what does that mean?

  678. Y'all the Saints of old? I mean, every night, every

  679. decision they're making, every motive is getting inspected.

  680. Everything, men and women, they were, they were not trusting

  681. themselves that much. They did not give themselves the

  682. benefit of the doubt. Yeah, I'm about to say something

  683. I never thought I would say. I've been watching a lot of

  684. golf. Listen, I grew up in a let me

  685. not go there. I I was not a huge golf guy.

  686. I'll put it like that. You could ask me about it

  687. offline. But what I'm starting to, this

  688. is the subtle thing about golf as you get into it, there is no

  689. Realplayer beef. You watch NBA and it's like that

  690. guy hates that guy in like 5 seconds.

  691. And I love NBA. I'm watching some games today,

  692. OK, but it I was like, why is that?

  693. And I didn't really have words for it yet.

  694. Like why in golf? And there's little subtle beef.

  695. But I was like, what is it about golf that makes them not hate

  696. each other? And you know what the answer is?

  697. The game's too hard for me to worry about you.

  698. This game is so impossible. You can go from the best player

  699. in the world to not even making the cut, which means you getting

  700. kicked out the tournament. Top five players in the world

  701. got kicked out yesterday. This game is so hard.

  702. I ain't going to hate you. It takes too much energy to

  703. worry about y'all. This game is too hard.

  704. So I want to bring that mindset in, but then be like, use it for

  705. one another as well. You get what I'm saying?

  706. Like sin is so much the enemy that I got no energy to be

  707. hating on other people, OK? I got to leverage all of my

  708. energy for my church family, for my family, for me to win against

  709. sin. I ain't got no time to be

  710. building a brand for myself and a name for myself.

  711. The amount of energy we leverage towards self exaltation is part

  712. of why we're losing the war against sin.

  713. Because part of what's happening in this cultural moment is we

  714. leverage all of our energy towards self advancement and we

  715. have none for sin killing. Are you with me?

  716. And so we think we exist to build our name, build our brand,

  717. all these things and we have no energy to fight sin.

  718. Y'all let's flip that where? How much energy does it take to

  719. be sober? Start with that, OK?

  720. And then your extra energy can go towards the good works God

  721. designed for you to live out, right?

  722. We are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works.

  723. Amen. But you got to be sober minded

  724. to be ready to do those good works, OK?

  725. Make war my friends. If you have tasted of His grace,

  726. make war my friends. We can't earn His love, but

  727. effort has its place. Make war, my friends, because

  728. sin is making war on you. Make war, my friends, because

  729. cruise control simply will not do.

  730. Make war, my friends. Strive together with your sister

  731. and brother. Make war, my friends.

  732. In this fight we fight for one another.

  733. Let's pray. Almighty God our Father, we love

  734. you. God, I want my friends to win

  735. against sin in big ways and little ways.

  736. God, protect this church, protect our souls, protect us

  737. that our preferences don't drive our life, but your Word, your

  738. promises. Help us to care for one another

  739. more than just job promotions and and good gifts.

  740. But God, help us to fight for one another's victory over sin.

  741. Got to protect the marriages in this church, protect families.

  742. Would you change generations? Would you change things?

  743. God, because of our fight against sin, would future

  744. blessings flow to our kids and our neighborhoods, to our great

  745. city? Lord, because we take this fight

  746. seriously, we love you. We pray this in Christ's name,

  747. Amen.
