God is Our Rescuing King

Well, my name is Tanner. I'm one of the pastors.

Here it is a pleasure to be with you and y'all.

This is our last week and our. Summer in the Psalm series.

Which is bittersweet. We've done.

Psalms. 111 to now 118 we'll keep.

Coming back to the Psalms in the future.

Y'all the Psalms? Are the best.

I love them this. Week I we.

We cooked some chicken at our house, OK, And we cooked it with

some marinade. You know, I want you to imagine

your favorite marinade that you put on your chicken.

OK, now if I told you I'd just slap the marinade on there 2

minutes before we put it on the. Grill or if it sat.

In a bag full. Of the marinade for 24 hours,

which chicken do you think was better?

The one where it's soaked right y'all?

Here at Port City, we're. Passionate about helping people

understand. Your soul is the chicken.

You laughing? I'm serious.

I hope that. Gets in your head.

Your soul is the chicken, and as a human being.

You have the volitional. Choice to choose your marinade.

Does that make sense? All of you are.

In a bag right now, did you know that?

And if you wake up? And you grab the.

Phone and you check the e-mail, you check the text, you check

the scores, and you check the you check the things.

Guess what your marinade is? Anxiety.

Pressure. You're behind.

You're behind on your goals. You are not enough.

And here at Port City, we're trying to.

Say, make the marinade the word of God.

Make the marinade the. Realities of the.

Kingdom make the. The reality of the world as it

is through God's eyes. Your marinade.

And y'all the psalms. Give us a great.

Marinade they give. US a world that isn't.

Shutting our. Eyes, how hard it is.

Like. Life is hard, but God is

faithful. Life is tragic, God is.

Faithful. That's the Psalms.

So as we close out this series, please keep.

Reading them, read at least one a day.

Just soak in the psalms even when it feels like you.

Can't 1 to 1 connect? How does this change my life?

Y'all? It's a marinade.

It's getting in you, OK. And remember, when you're not in

God's Word, when it's not in you, something else is taking

its place, OK? So let me pray.

For our just life. In the Psalms, our life.

Together as a. As a.

Body and and friends around us that we would be a people that

can. Live in a tragic world with a

good God. OK, our Father, we love you.

Laura, we just acknowledged that we are made, we are finite, we

are fickle. Lord, we we are the piece of

chicken got in and you made us here on purpose, for purpose.

And God, we just recognize that we need to be wise about the

marinade. We choose to.

Soak our. Souls in and nobody's going to

do that for us and and people make a lot of money.

To distract us to. Concern us, scare us, hype us

up, make us think we are the greatest of all time.

But God, you are the greatest and we just acknowledge that

that we want to shift our attention to you right now.

And I just pray for our life in the Psalms.

Got to pray even when life is. Hard we would trust.

That you are good and it would shape how we live.

Bless this church, fill us with the Spirit and open our eyes.

We all we in Psalm 118 today and it is unique for two reasons.

One is the structure and the other is the the content.

So I want to go ahead and tell you how the structure is unique.

So what you're going to? See as we.

Get into it. Is I want you.

To imagine like it's going to shift from the group.

Speaking to an individual speaking.

To some pre speaking back to the group.

OK so the image I want to go. Ahead and give you of.

Why that is OK? It's almost like a call and

response of different people singing.

There was a fancy word antiphonal.

I look it up. What does that mean?

It just means like call and response, different groups

singing at different. Times want you to.

Imagine a king. OK, and almost imagine him going

like from a. Battlefield where he just.

Won and as he's walking. Towards the temple to worship

God, all of God's. People line up behind him and

it's this. Ushering in of a king with his

people and they're singing to. Each other he's.

Singing his song. Of God's deliverance, they're.

Entering near the temple and the priest.

Speaks out about who's allowed. To enter.

And then the king and all the people usher in, and they go.

All the way up to the altar to praise the.

Lord in the temple. Does that make sense?

So. Very unique imagery.

I want you all to. Have then it's also unique.

For its content y'all hopefully. You could pick up already.

The imagery of a king winning a. Battle headed to a temple.

Who is righteous enough to enter that temple and usher?

All of God's people to worship at the altar.

There is a king who did that. The New Testament quotes this

Psalm, arguably more than any other Psalm referencing King.

Jesus, he is the victorious. Champion.

He is the the new temple. He is the one who can take us to

the. Altar.

And so this Psalm is primarily about Messiah.

King Jesus, So what? I want to do.

Is, I want us to think. About how this song used to be.

Sang before Jesus. How we can?

Sing it now in. Jesus and how in a way we will

sing it again in a unique way one day.

We're still waiting to sing the full.

Expression of this. Does that make sense?

So. They used to sing it.

Let's learn that we could sing it now in.

Christ, we will sing it one day in Christ we're going to look.

At past, present, future. Of Psalm 118 and my.

Hope is that even the imagery of what it means to be a human

being you would leave here feeling like you're behind your

king with a family on route. To a day.

That will find its. Fullness in Psalm 118, and that

will change how we live. Does that sound good?

OK. So I got those three points

past, present and future. If you already, let me hear you

Let's talk about the past. Let's remember.

The rescue I want to. Quickly show you the structure I

just alluded to. So just.

Glance with me. At verses one through.

Four, what you'll notice there. Is it's just that that?

Refrain. We even opened our.

Service with here. Today, like some statements.

About God's goodness and then everyone responds to steadfast

love endures forever four times. A cool little.

Side note, there is the. If you look at verse 3 it says

or verse 2 it says let Israel say verse three, let the House

of. Aaron say verse 4 let.

Those who fear the Lord. Say that kind of hyperlinks.

To to Psalm 115. That we did a few.

Weeks back with Pastor. John, that was an incredible

sermon. If you didn't hear it, pull it

You need to. Listen to Psalm 115 be.

Taught similar kind of structure, but then look at

verse 5. So it was.

All of us just singing about the Steadfast.

Love of the Lord, verse 5 says. Out of my distress.

I called on the Lord so it. Shifts to this individual.

It shifts to a distress that he. Was in and the Lord.

Set him free verse 10 all nations surrounded this

individual in the name of the. Lord, I cut.

Them off so somehow he was surrounded, he was in trouble.

He was almost haunted down right but he made it out.

Verse 14 the Lord is my strength and my song.

He has become my salvation. Verse 17 I shall not die, but I

shall. Live and recount the deeds of

the. Lord, OK, so remember.

You've got a group. Following this king.

Now look at what happens in verse 19.

That individual. Says.

Open to me. The gates of righteousness,

that. I may enter through.

Them and give thanks to. The Lord.

Now imagine like a priest at the temple saying verse 20 this.

Is the gate of the. Lord, the righteous shall enter

through it. Kind of like only certain people

can come through and then. Back to the the individual.

I thank you that you have answered me and have become my

salvation, the Stone. That the builders rejected has.

Become the cornerstone. This is the Lord's doing.

It is marvelous. In our eyes, this.

Is the day. That the Lord has made.

Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

And then you can almost imagine the whole group shouting out.

Save us, we pray, O Lord, O Lord, we pray.

Give us success. Verse 26 Some of you already

kind of know this is a famous. One of the new.

Testament Blessed is he who comes in the name of the.

Lord, we bless. You from the house.

Of the Lord. The Lord is God.

And he has made his light to shine upon.

Us bind the feastal. Sacrifice of the.

Cords up to the horns. Of the altar you are my.

God, and I'll give thanks to you.

You are my God. I will.

Extol you I'll. Give thanks to the Lord.

For he is good. For his steadfast love endures

forever, OK? So there's kind of that

structure we alluded. To and there's all kinds of

books. Debating who's speaking at each

moment of each verse and. There's a lot of value in that,

but I hope. You all get the general

structure. OK, Psalm 1. 18 is a song of.

Rescue. Somebody say rescue.

This is a song. The people of God.

Used to sing when they. Thought about the rescue God

had. Done.

There are two events in the Old Testament if you're new to your

Bible. You just got to get.

Really familiar with that kind of shape, the.

Landscape of the Old Testament. They rhyme with schmexitus and

schmexile OK. It's called Exodus and Exile.

Those two moments kind of define their identity as a.

People OK the. Exodus.

Somebody say Exodus. The Exodus is when the people of

God. Were set free from.

Slavery to Egypt? OK, Egypt had control.

Of them they were enslaved. And God LED them out through the

10. Plagues through the splitting of

the red. Sea through the Passover.

Lamb being instituted. They walk out.

OK, now there are new. People in the wilderness.

They get the. Law.

They're headed the promised. Land, all that good stuff.

OK, now the second kind of major theme.

Is the exile. One of the things.

God told his people. Is I'm gonna teach you how to be

a new people. I'm gonna give you my law.

I'm gonna teach you how to live in my land, but.

If you fail to trust. My covenant.

Faithfulness and show the nations how I'm different.

The land itself will spit. You out the warning was.

Always if you are. Idolatrous and become like the

nations, then the nations. Are going to take you.

That's what's going to happen, and God told them that.

A lot of different. Ways a lot of different warnings

and loving. Ways and and they became like

the nations and the land spit them out.

Most famously in Five. 86 BC. The Babylonians.

Took them over and they pulled them out of their land.

OK, But God sustained them. He was.

Gracious to them and he's. He sustained them in the midst

of exile. And this is books like Daniel

and all those books in the Old Testament, these amazing stories

of God sustaining grace, and then he brings them back.

And then an amazing thing happens where like Nehemiah and

Ezra, they come back and they rebuild a temple and walls.

And that's where a lot. Of the old.

Testament structure starts. To make sense, so I want to

show. You what I just.

Explained to you on a chart. Real quick, check this out.

OK, here's basically the idea the Exodus is a big deal.

God's people get LED out of slavery.

And they sing Psalm 118 at the Passover.

Year over year over year. OK.

And even like verse 14 that are read.

Over you is a direct. Quotation of Exodus 15 two which

they sing. It's called Moses song

immediately. After getting out of Egypt, OK.

Now they also sing this. Psalm thinking about the exile.

Not just about Exodus. They think back to like God

didn't let them totally dominate us.

He didn't let Nebuchadnezzar thought he was the most powerful

dude in the world, and he kind of had his way.

But you know what? God sustained us.

Let's sing of the steadfast love of the Lord forever, and then

you'll know what we're back in our land now.

And it's not perfect, and this temple isn't as good as the one

Solomon built, but we're back and Nehemiah builds the walls

and Ezra and all the things. So they would sing this song to

remind themselves of what God did.

Once in the Exodus. His sustaining grace.

In the exile. And now again in the Ezra

Nehemiah days of like look. God has brought us back.

And they keep singing it, longing for the one king who

would make it ultimately true. Does that make sense?

So it's a way of reminding themselves what he did and

asking him to keep. Being that save us O.

Lord, we pray. Like it's still a prayer as

well. Does that make sense?

If it makes sense, let me hear you say.

Sense, OK. The idea is God keeps.

Delivering and his people keep singing.

God delivers, They sing. God delivers.

They sing, God delivers, they sing, they're in trouble, and

they sing to remind themselves of the deliverance that happened

once. That's still our God.

That's still our God. It's a reminder that no matter

what the. Steadfast love of the.

Lord endures forever. So is Psalm 118 about the exile

from Exodus? Yes.

I'm sorry, the the exodus. Y'all y'all get what I'm saying?

Is it about God sustaining grace in the midst of?

Hardship in. Exile when you are taking.

Over. And your life looks terrible,

yes. Is it about how God brought them

back and is? Faithful to his promises.

Yes, it's about all. Of them and.

Is it about the one true king, the cornerstone who was still to

come? Yes, that's how they used to.

Sing this song, So what? Do we do with that?

What do we learn? From how they've sang it for

thousands of. Years #1.

God's past activity has always shaped his people's current

trust. What he did has.

Always dictated my current. Trust he did that I.

Trust him, he did. That I trust Him.

Look with me at verses 8 and 9. Look with me at verses 8:00 and

9:00. So when talking about being

delivered in. Distress all this.

It says it is better. Somebody say better?

To take refuge in the Lord than to trust.

In man it is. Better to take refuge.

In the Lord than to trust in Princess and y'all think about

that in context. They might be in exile singing

that and it's reminding themselves it's.

Better y'all to. Trust in the Lord than to have

all the power, than to know. The person with the power.

Who can do what they want to do and could give me the good life

quickly. So they would sing this song to

remind themselves it's. Better to trust.

The Lord, no matter our. Circumstances we trust the Lord,

it is better. Now it's kind of a crazy.

Statement like think about. If you were like the.

Son or daughter of somebody? With a lot of power.

Who could get? How do you get a?

Christmas gift for LeBron James. Kid, you know what I mean?

What you going to get them? They ain't got, you know.

But in a way, y'all, it is better to trust in the Lord than

to trust somebody who could give you all.

Princess had all the power. It's better than to be the son

of a political figure, to trust the Lord.

It's better to know him even in the midst of difficulty, and to

trust him. Take refuge.

In him than it is. To have an easy life.

To have easy. Access to whatever your heart

desires. And to be able to get out.

Of trouble. So y'all.

How are we doing with trusting the?

Lord, regardless of our circumstances.

Are we running to the? Lord for refuge.

And that just means REST. Where does your soul go to rest?

I think we don't quite see the link.

Between trust and rest. What you go to where?

Your mind wanders when nobody's around.

You Daydream is more linked. To what you trust.

Than what you say you. Trust you.

Trust what you go to to give you rest.

When your head hits that. Pillow and you start

daydreaming. That's what you trust.

Being wanted by people, winning, hitting that next thing,

grabbing that money, getting that comfortable.

Life. If that's where you go to rest

to escape, What if? Where we escape is actually what

we're. Trusting to give us life.

There's a great link between your refuge and your.

Trust, so that's the first thing we got to wrestle with.

Secondly, this history of singing.

The Psalm this way shows us that the goal of God's rescue has.

Always been to enter God's presence.

The goal of. Rescue has always been presence.

OK. So the idea is the.

King has won a battle and immediately takes his people.

To the temple. Do you see that the?

Goal of rescue. Is to enter the presence of God,

to go near the altar, to draw to him in confidence.

So the goal of being delivered from sin, from death, from

Satan, isn't just to. Get out of.

Trouble, but it's to be brought into the presence of God.

See how that I'm delivered? From myself, from sin.

Some of us need to be. Delivered from ourselves.

Hello somebody. That's the worst.

Part about life apart from Christ.

Is all you got Is you you got. Nobody to blame for your.

Problems but you. Amen.

It's it's a hard, humbling thing, you gotta admit.

But you gotta admit it. You're the problem.

But once delivered, He's not just taking you from trouble.

He's trying to deliver you to His presence, to worship, to

enjoyment of God. And some of us still look at the

Christian. Life like it's primarily

getting. Out of trouble?

Y'all that is not. God's goal for your life.

Y'all heaven is to come if you are in Christ.

Hell is not, and we praise God that judgment does not fall on.

Us. It falls on Christ, but more

than I get removal. Of judgment I get.

Entrance into his presence. I get God I.

Get the altar I. Get the Son, I get the Spirit, I

go. To the Father with confidence.

So y'all, is that you? Are you living a life where

you're delivered into God's presence?

Are you just like, I know what I'm delivered from and I just

kind of do my thing and my conscience feels clear?

Y'all God died. For you to bring you to himself.

So that's how. Remembering the rescue has

always. Shaped the people of God.

Let's talk about how. In the present through the

person. Of Jesus, this changes in the

present. We going to rejoice in the day.

Let's talk about this a little bit, y'all.

Jesus is the fulfillment of all the themes of this Psalm, right?

First of all, the exodus. Verses 10 through 14 I mentioned

to you are sung in the Psalm of Moses things just like this,

this idea that all nations surrounded me.

In the name of the Lord, I cut them off.

They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side.

In the name of the Lord I cut them off.

They surrounded me like bees. They went out like a fire among

thorns. In the name of the Lord I cut

them off. I was pushed hard so that I was

willing. So that I was.

Falling, but the Lord helped me, the Lord.

Is my strength and my song. He has become my salvation.

Y'all the ultimate. Exodus of the People.

Of God is not from Egypt y'all, it's from sin.

It's from slavery to death. It's from Satan and the person

of. Jesus, we have the.

Ultimate exodus. We have the ultimate We're

getting out of prison to ourselves, to bondage.

Jesus is the one. Y'all who can sing this song

ultimately? Because he was defeated.

By death y'all the way that our. King wins.

For us, the way he is victorious was by.

Being defeated was by being. Crushed, he is the.

Passover lamb. He doesn't take somebody else's

blood and wipe it on the door. He is the lamb.

He is. He is the one who was.

Crushed for us so that His blood could be applied to our lives,

He sets us free. Through his atoning,

sacrificial, substitutionary. Work, but he's also.

The end to exile. He is also the one who brings us

out of the slavery that our own sin brings.

Upon us and the consequences. Of it, the most famous verse in

all of these. Comes in verse 22.

The Stone. That the builders rejected has.

Become the cornerstone. Somebody say cornerstone, you

know the new. Testament writers are all over

this, but the basic. Idea is that in every building

there is a stone. Like it's it's the foundational

stone, without which. Nothing can be built and the.

Imagery of the temple. In the Old Testament was.

This idea that God would. Dwell was the connection of

heaven and earth is. Kind of what the temple?

Represented OK and in the New Testament.

Era in the person of. Christ.

God says all throughout the book of Acts.

God has never dwelt in places built by human.

Hands. It was an imagery gifted to us

so that when the person of Christ.

Fulfilled it. We see now that the temple has

gone viral. The temple is us.

The temple is the. People.

Of God united to the. Father by the Son through the

Spirit in Jesus Christ is that cornerstone first?

Peter 2 tells us that. We are being built up into a

spiritual house. On him and I'm not I'm not.

A Mason. I'm not a I'm not a stone guy.

I'm not a brick. Guy, but I did.

Grow up on the job site with my dad and we had these if you've.

Ever been to a job? Site.

There'll just be a stack of two by fours.

Think like when you go to Lowe's or Home Depot like Alden.

Boards just like a. Giant pallet stack.

Of two by fours. And I remember I was.

Copying like I didn't know what I was doing.

But I remember the adults. They would do this thing where

they. Cut the little black.

Things that hold it down, you better watch out.

That's one of the things I got to learn.

Some things like and they almost smack you and hurts you well,

once. Those are off and you pull the

plastic off. They would all take every board.

And they would look at it. They would squint and look down

it. Because the idea is.

You don't want warped boards. Being used in your walls, right?

So you would. Squint and look at it.

And if it was super curved you would toss it to the side then

you look at it so you get a straight 1 then.

You would use it to. Build your walls.

You all this image. That the New Testament picks up

on is that the. Leaders of Israel the the the

people. Put in position to be.

Looking for Messiah? They did this with Jesus.

They took him. They picked.

Up the board. Looked at him crooked.

Saw he was. Warped and tossed him.

Not usable, not cornerstone material.

The stone that the. Builders rejected like the.

People who should have been looking for him.

Has become the cornerstone in Acts. 4 That's what Peter says

to the religious leaders. He quotes this verse.

It says y'all did that. Y'all killed him.

Y'all was supposed to be looking for him, but y'all did it.

And it's not just the. Builders, it's not just the

leaders, y'all That image of picking up Jesus and looking at

him and thinking he's warped and tossing them.

That's what we all do in our sin.

Y'all ultimately what sin is. Is to take the Son of God.

Even in our ignorance, we do this all the time.

We. Know that God made all things

you can wake up. Be seven years.

Old and just recognize you ain't make yourself, you ain't make

your mom and daddy. This came from somewhere.

Who is it? God, you don't.

Even have to know. All the all the stuff.

Yet but you know and you just suppress.

That but then once you hear the message.

Of Jesus once you read the gospels, once you're.

Exposed to who he is. What you do and you're saying is

you look at him. You pick him up.

You. Size him up, Messiah Healer.

Sermon on the Mount Giver. And we look at him and we toss

him. Unfit to build my life on.

No thanks. Sometimes we use arguments.

We Google enough information to dismiss him.

We Google some argument somewhere from a tik.

Toker or whatever it is. But it starts in the heart that.

Dismissal isn't in the brain, it's in your heart.

I don't want a cornerstone. Y'all, to dismiss him is to say.

I got it. I'm the cornerstone.

I'm building my life on me. I'll make my own religion.

I'm spiritual but not religious. That's my.

Favorite, which is a way. And y'all, there's a time where

I would have said something like that, but behind that is a

posture of I got it. And whatever Jesus I got, I got

it. I choose what I got and I got

it. In all of us.

Is this heart that just says? To Jesus on his terms.

I got it. That was me.

So what do we do with that? What What should we do in light

of the fact that Christ has come and.

Fulfilled these things #1. Trust Christ the.

Cornerstone. Trust him.

Y'all, he is the fulfillment of everything that we need.

That this song points to y'all. We need a king who wins the

battle. We need a king who chops the

head off the giant we need. A king to go in.

To the thick of it and win it. We need a king who can be sworn

by the bees and not be over. We need a.

Winner. We need a champion.

Your soul was made. To have a champion and friend,

you are not that champion. You need a champion.

You're not the champion. You are not the center of your.

Story. Y'all, we need a priest.

We need somebody. Standing at the the temple.

Saying only the righteous may enter.

We need somebody righteous enough that the.

Gates could be open. To them, we need somebody.

Who can go in for? US.

Y'all, we need a king. We need.

We need. This figure who can.

Do all of this. We need somebody to.

Actually make the payment. We need the Lamb of God.

Jesus is all. Of those things, he's prophet,

he's priest, he's king, he's lamb.

And y'all I just want. To call you to trust him if.

You are not a believer. In Jesus Christ.

What I mean by that is you need to.

Trust him. You need to surrender to Him,

submit to Him, acknowledge in your heart, in your mind, with.

Your will. Submit yourself before him and

say. God, I did.

Size you up and I did toss you. And what you're going to have to

let go of is things like but I've.

Always been in church. My Mama taught me that.

I know that I know. That you're the cornerstone.

Even knowing he is, that is not trusting him as.

That. It's not building your life.

On it, this isn't about information, this is your heart.

Surrendering and submitting. To a king that you are not and

you have to acknowledge. That you looked at them.

Warped and tossed them and thought you would be.

A better God to yourself. Than he would be to you and it's

to say God I was wrong. I'm sorry, forgive me, it's a

believers in the room. Y'all cornerstone means you

build. Everything on it cornerstone.

Means he the ball. See.

The king he in. Charge you, are we?

Building our life. On this cornerstone?

Or is Jesus more like a mascot? Is.

He more just in the. Background of your life and it's

just, you know, morality being blessed in Jesus name, Let's

throw him on top. Or is he the.

Center of everything is he. The foundation of everything

you. Do secondly y'all.

One of the most famous verses in this Psalm as well comes in

verse 24. This is the day.

That the Lord has made Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

The. Second thing we could do is

rejoice in the day. If you've never heard this song,

I hope we get. Stuck in your head, This is the

day. This is the day that the Lord

has made, that the Lord has made.

I will rejoice. I will rejoice and be glad in it

and be glad in it. And all the church kids are

like. This is the day the Lord.

OK but y'all what I? Didn't know because I seen that

with my kids. What I did not know.

Is it's basically. In the New Testament Christ

centered version, it's the way. Of saying Christ is risen.

Like. That's what you're saying the.

King is alive the. King took us into the.

Temple, this is his day. Christ is risen.

This is the day that he has made.

Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

When the Psalmist says it in that context, he just walked

past. The temple gates.

And brought all of God's people in verse 23 right before it.

This is the Lord's doing. It is marvelous in our eyes.

This is the day. This is Resurrection Day.

This. Is king, you know the the enemy

has been. Defeated, I survived.

So it's not just an. Arbitrary.

This is what I want you to hear, because many of us are in this

headspace. Rejoicing is a.

Good attitude to have as. Good Christians, and you should

have it. That is true.

We should be a joyful people. But y'all, joy is not just a

choice. Of attitude that you should

elect to have. It is operating.

Within reality that. Christ is risen.

It is a volitional. Choice to get.

Aligned with the fact that. This is his day, he.

Is risen, and no matter what you're going through, this is

his day, not yours, and that's part of the.

Beauty of it. Is I'm not defined by if this

turns around for me, I'm not defined by if this goes right

for me. I'm not defined by if I get my

way because this is the day and one day this is going to be made

right one day. I won't have to struggle.

With this, no more one. Day this is going to end and I

will be with him face to face. This is his day.

Is not mine. So when we sing that song, it's

a rebellion. Against all the ways that we

feel like we're. Behind in life?

Like our life doesn't matter. Because I'm not getting this or

comparing to people. It's a rebellion against the

Kingdom of self that says. How is this your day?
