Uh, we're looking forward to what guy's gonna speak to us.

Um, if you went to the Billy Graham crusade in the late 90s down in Atlanta, then like me, you had the privilege of observing DC talk as they shared that song during the invitation at the end.

And it was incredible, like nothing I've ever seen before, as thousands of people came forward to respond to the message and the invitation that Billy Graham gave.

It was phenomenal.

As I considered the enormous loss that is coming to the world, when God snatches the followers of Jesus out of the world, I found myself remembering when I was left behind.

Think about that.

You ever been left somewhere and you were kind of scared, maybe as a little kid, thinking that something bad might happen to you?

Now I'm not gonna talk about the time that I left my daughter behind at church, or the time that I forgot to pick my little biscuit up from dance class, because she wasn't too scared either time.

Now I sure was, but she liked being at those places at church and at dance class, so it didn't matter to her.

She just felt like she got bonus coverage.

I was frightened that something might have happened to her because I forgot her, but I was especially terrified of what Joy was going to do to me for leaving her behind.

But none of that compares to what I felt when I got left behind.

This was when my family went to the beach.

I was about four or five years old.

You know, I I've told most of you guys I grew up in Jacksonville, Florida.

We had gone out to visit at Little Talbot Island just off the coast.

My whole family had piled into our big giant van, and I mean, I'm still in the bathroom changing clothes after having got a shower, you know, because the salt water, I couldn't stand it.

And of course I was beat red, sunburned, and it takes me a little longer.

And the whole family piled in the van and took off.

My older brothers had hogged the showers.

There were only two of them, so I couldn't get in until they were finished.

And apparently, mom thought all the kids were piled in, and so she took off.

I'm still putting my dry clothes on, and I hear the van cranking up, and I went, hang on, they're they're leaving me.

So I came running out of the bathhouse, and sure enough, I can see our van disappearing down this long, lonely road back to the mainland, and I'm going, hey.

Oh, by the way, I'm not mad.

I'm just raising my voice.

Someone asked me that the last time I preached.

Dude, were you mad?

And I'm like, no, passionate, okay?

So I said, hey, wait for me.

Don't leave me.

I was running.

I was running.

Screaming, actually, chasing our man down the road.

It was such a traumatic experience.

And almost 50 years later, I can still recall that feeling.

It was awful.

Maybe one of the most frightening moments of my entire life.

Until I saw the brake lights come on.

And then the reverse light.

And the van starts coming back down the road towards me.

Man, I was sobbing with joy and relief.

I just like to put my wife's name in the message.

There was sobbing with joy and relief.

My mom said she had done her typical countdown.

Every child in order was supposed to verbally state their number.

So my oldest sister Kathy one, Candy two, Chris three, Tommy four, Dennis five, Patricia six, and then it got to seven.

No one said anything.

That's when the brake lights came on.

That's when my mom realized, uh oh, we're missing one.

And I'm sure there was a moment of hesitation.

Do we just go on home?

And then I, you know, that could have been my dad saying, yeah, it's okay.

He'll find a way.

But then my mom put it in reverse.

Thank God they came back to get me.

Today's passage, as we read through Matthew chapter 24, ought to produce the same kind of fear in us as we consider the people we love who will be left behind here on earth due to their unbelief.

Matthew 24 · chapter mention

Think of someone right now that you love who doesn't believe in God, or doesn't follow Jesus, who never wants to discuss their spiritual condition with you.

You walk on eggshells around them, trying not to upset them.

Or maybe have you called a truce with them, agreeing that your conversations will simply focus on the weather, your health, their health, sports, something innocuous.

Anything but God or Jesus or the Bible.

That God will soften their hearts and open their minds, that He'll send someone in their path that they'll listen to.

And perhaps consider that Jesus is the only way to eternal life.

I know as I wrote this message, I have and I I have daily several people in my mind, even right now I can think of them, that I long to see as Jesus' followers.

But they've asked me to stop talking to them about my own personal faith journey.

Man, that's hard to do.

But they say if I want to continue to have an active relationship with them, they don't want to hear about it anymore.

Maybe you know somebody that's struggling with substance abuse or physical ailment.

Maybe they're involved in an abusive relationship, and yet they refuse to turn to Jesus for help.

These are the people that we all think will be left behind when Jesus comes back.

And likely that's correct thinking.

But I want to suggest to you this morning that there may well be some of us in this room who think we're going to be snatched away, who will actually find ourselves left behind.

So the big idea for today is this.

We're going to read a little bit of this passage and then consider how to apply it to our lives by asking questions and then seeing what answer God has for us.

Let's begin Matthew chapter 24, verses 36 through 39.

Matthew 24:36–39

But concerning that day and hour, no one knows.

Not even the angels of heaven, nor the sons, but the Father only.

For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

For as in those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept all away.

So will be the coming of the Son of Man.

So here's the question I want us to consider.

How do we know Jesus is coming back?

As a kid, my mom experienced salvation at a special ecumenical conference meeting of the Roman Catholic Church.

Not the place you'd most likely hear a gospel message, I wouldn't think.

But she heard and she responded and she came home and she started telling all of us about Jesus.

I'm 12 years old and I don't quite understand it.

But I love my mom.

And everywhere she went, I wanted to go.

So she she took me to every conference, every prayer meeting, every preacher that came to town, it didn't matter what denomination they were.

And I remember going to hear this one guy who spoke out in times.

And it was frightening.

So since that day, I've been asking myself the question how do I know?

For sure, Jesus is coming back.

And when?

I was convinced as a 12-year-old that it was happening soon.

Now, if you knew me from 12 to 25, you would say you sure didn't act like it, and you're right.

But then Jesus got my attention.

I think we can find the answer here.

Because in the preceding 35 verses of this same chapter, Jesus tells us this.

He says that he will appear in the sky, and everyone will see him coming on the clouds with power and glory, accompanied by his angels.

The trumpet will sound, he will gather his elect from one end of the earth to the other.

In fact, Jesus says that everything that exists will ultimately pass away, but not his words.

I find that interesting.

What do I glean from that declaration?

I glean that he's speaking the truth and that we ignore him at our peril.

I know that Jesus is real.

You know why?

Because I've met him and I've heard him speak to me.

I've seen his glory.

I've felt his love and his forgiveness.

I've experienced the truth of his promises repeatedly in my life.

And I can assure you, he is real and he is truth.

In Acts 1.11, we read the story of the apostles gazing up at the sky as Jesus ascends into heaven.

Perhaps they're standing there staring at the sky in awe at this incredible sight of a human being levitating that they're witnessing.

And suddenly a couple of angels, or at least some beings clothed in white, appear to them and ask them, Why are you looking up at the sky when Jesus is coming back the same way that he just left you?

In verse 30 of this chapter, Matthew 24, Jesus promises his followers that he will appear in the sky and everyone will see him.

So I believe him because he's proven to be true in my own life.

Now please understand, I'm not saying that everything in my life is perfect.

I'm not claiming to be perfect, not anymore.

But what I am saying is that Jesus is perfect and he can be trusted perfectly by us.

If you're like me, then maybe you also want to figure out when he's coming back so that we can get our affairs in order and start living holy lives just before he comes back.

Now we think we have plenty of time to sow our wild oats and act any way we want, but that is just not true.

Can I tell you I've had conversations with people over the years who have told me, yeah, yeah, I know you're right, and I believe what you're saying.

Um I'm just not quite ready yet.

We think we have time.

But the enemy of God is the one putting those thoughts into your head, trying to keep you from becoming the person that God created you to be.

I have a suggestion for you.

It might be a little easier for me since I'm on the other side of 60, but listen, here's the suggestion.

Why don't we all begin to live as though today is that day?

And we have no more time to waste on useless pursuit of earthly pleasures.

We know that Jesus is coming back because he told us he's coming back.

We know that Jesus always speaks the truth because he told us in John 14, 6, I am the way, the truth, and the life.

And no man comes to the Father except through me.

In Genesis 6, we read about the time of Noah, which Jesus mentions in the passage we just read.

We read about the total depravity of mankind which brought about the great flood.

Jesus tells us that we can recognize when the time is right for his return, when we see society becoming as depraved as they were back then.

Yikes.

So let's look at Genesis 6.5, shall we?

Oh boy.

All right.

Thanks.

Apparently, even when I'm sitting down, I move around too much.

The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.

That's Genesis 6.5 in the New Living Translation.

You don't have to imagine that the world is becoming like that, do you?

Just look around you.

Look at your phone, watch TV, or just look at what's happening around us every day.

I don't know how many of you guys in here have ever shopped at the Kroger on the corner.

Let me see your hands.

By the way, I'm wearing my reading glasses, so I really can't see any of y'all, but it looks like there were a lot of hands raised.

I'm pretty sure I saw somebody online raising their hands through the camera.

Listen, we were there Friday before last.

Joy and I were.

And we hear this shouting right around the corner.

We're at that checkout line on the far end, and someone's yelling in the produce section.

I mean, literally from like here to the lobby away from us.

Only the Starbucks is between us, right?

Joy looks at me and goes, man, we better get out of here.

Somebody might have a gun.

I go, it's Loganville.

Come on.

Guess what I saw on the news the next day?

Someone pulled a gun on someone in the produce section on Friday in Loganville Kroger.

Can you believe it?

It happened right here.

I'm not making this stuff up.

If we wonder, is the world getting worse?

Let me just tell you, when somebody pulls a gun on somebody in the produce section in Loganville, the answer is a resounding yes.

There's evil and sin in every part of the world, and it is not getting better.

In fact, it's worsening as wretched human beings begin to foist their depraved practices on our children by teaching them through media and even school curriculum.

I thank God for programs like CLC that are trying to combat what the enemy is attempting to normalize.

And if you don't know what CLC is, it stands for the Christian Learning Center, and it's a program that's offered as an elective to students in schools here in Walton County.

I thank God for that.

A few years ago I had an opportunity to share an abstinence-based sexual education program in several Walton County schools.

Woo-hoo, right?

That was fun.

While I was presenting in one of our county's middle schools, I had a student that I actually had to have removed from the class because he was causing such a disruption.

Not only was he disinterested in what was being taught, but he was keeping everyone else in the class from focusing and participating in the conversation.

The teacher later informed me that the student who was expelled from the classroom had been expelled from school the previous year for the exact same deviant sexual practice I was teaching about that day.

So no wonder he didn't want me to tell them how awful it was.

He'd already lived how awful it was.

I'd never heard of that before studying this curriculum, and yet this dude had practiced it.

Did I mention he was a middle schooler?

A sixth-grade kid who was doing this.

Read with me, if you will, verses 40 through 44 from Matthew 24.

Then two men will be in the field, one will be taken and one left.

Two women will be grinding at the mill, one will be taken and one left.

Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming, but know this that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into.

Therefore, you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

The second question I think we should be asking ourselves is this how should we be acting when Jesus comes back?

Good question, isn't it?

I think we should be acting like we would any other day of our lives.

Because every day we ought to be living as though Jesus is coming back today.

We should be working, we should be walking and talking with friends and family, we should be gathering together for worship as we are this morning.

Or even better, we should be sharing a meal.

We should be conducting business as usual, living in a way that draws others to Jesus.

We should be expectant and yet vigilant.

Human nature makes us inclined to think that if something didn't happen to us yesterday, and it didn't happen to us today, or any of the days before this, then we can probably figure out it's not gonna happen soon.

I mean the skull, the sky didn't fall yesterday, so it's not gonna fall today, right?

Logic.

Jesus didn't come back yesterday, so he's probably not coming back today, right?

That's wrong thinking.

It might sound logical, but that's wrong thinking.

Verse 42 specifically warns us to stay awake, to be prepared, so that we see our master coming, even if it's in the middle of the night, which I believe is a reference to at a time when you don't expect him.

And that could be any day.

We must allow the certainty of his return to be expressed in our everyday lives, in our everyday speech.

I am supposed to love God with every fiber of my being, and then I'm supposed to love others the exact same way that I love myself.

So that makes me wonder: do I love myself?

And do I really love God if I don't love myself?

Because he created me fearfully and wonderfully.

And if I love him, love God completely, then I am going to be perfectly obedient to his word the best way I know how.

I'm gonna live hopefully, and I'm gonna live with great expectation that Jesus is returning for me, even though it has not happened before.

We need to learn to love unconditionally, don't we?

Even to the people that don't want our love.

And that's kind of hard to do.

I mean, how do you think the world would change if all of us began to love others the way Jesus loves us?

It would be awesome.

What if we all started acting like Jesus?

You know, stop criticizing people, stop fighting with each other, especially in the church?

What if we started loving and sharing like the early church did in the book of Acts?

I often find myself saying smart electric things, even in the lobby right there on Sunday morning, to the people that I consider my friends, somehow thinking that I'm gonna make them feel good and smile and laugh with me by making fun of them.

But man, I am wrong.

I'm wrong to do that.

Because making fun of someone else is not what I want Jesus to find me doing when he returns.

Do you?

I don't think that's a productive way to share the love of God with others.

In fact, I would say it's probably the opposite of how I should act.

And it's definitely not what I want Jesus to hear me saying when he comes back.

So to everyone out there watching online or in the auditorium that I have jokingly cut down or criticized, I'm sorry.

I said I wasn't gonna call out any names, but you know who you are.

I'm sorry for all of the inane comments that I've made through the years.

I wish that somehow I could take them all back and replace them with these kind, encouraging expressions of love and friendship.

Joy has often said that she wishes she could invent a word vacuum.

You know what a word vacuum is?

Something that sucks up all the words and phrases that you wish you'd never said.

Gosh, Joy, so do I.

I'd be the first guy to buy one.

I should be acting like Jesus and talking like Jesus when he comes back.

So I figured no time like the present to return.

I mean to begin, so that when he returns, he'll find me speaking like Jesus.

Wouldn't you like to join me in that?

And until Jesus returns, we all speak love and truth and kindness to each other.

I've often felt like I wanted people to think I was funny so they'd like me.

I just wonder if more people would like me because I was kind than because I was funny.

In verses 45 through 47, Jesus says this.

Who then is the faithful and wise servant whom his master has set over his household to give them their food at the proper time?

Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.

Truly I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.

The third question that I found myself asking myself was, Will you blessed when Jesus comes back?

And I think we all ought to consider that question.

Will you be blessed when Jesus comes back?

Now, in order to be blessed by our master at his return, first we have to be his servants, don't we?

To receive the blessing as his servant, we must faithfully be fulfilling his instructions.

So in order to know those instructions, what do we need to do?

I think we should be studying the Word of God ourselves, each one of us, according to his or her own ability.

Now, with the advent of the internet, we have access to more educational support than ever before in history.

We can access biblical commentaries, sermons, dictionaries, lexicons, concordances, Bible study notes, podcasts, and a plethora of historical documents and maps that allow us to glean thousands of years of knowledge about a single verse of Scripture.

There is no excuse for any of us to not study the Bible.

There just isn't.

One of my favorite verses in the entire Bible is taken from 2 Timothy 2.15.

Work hard.

So you can present yourself to God and receive his approval.

Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed, and who correctly explains the word of truth.

In the King James Version, it says, study to show thyself approved unto God, as a workman who needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

You see, we are to be diligent in our effort to understand what God is saying to us.

And then we're supposed to work hard to know how and to practice correctly applying that word to our everyday lives.

If we follow Jesus, that's for all of us.

It's not just for pastors, not for Bible study teachers, not just for community group leaders.

It is for all of us.

How cool would it be if Jesus returns to find you earnestly studying his word and attempting to live it out daily?

If you do that, his word promises you, you will be blessed.

Here's some ancillary questions that you might want to ask yourself.

Am I a child of God?

Do I study his word, attempt to apply it to my life?

Am I living expectantly?

Expecting him to show up at any minute?

Then here's some thoughts.

If the boss comes by your station at work, will he find you at least gainfully employed?

And then maybe my favorite question that God's impounding me with recently is this are you inviting someone else to journey with you on your life of faith?

If you do not know how to answer any of those questions affirmatively, then please come talk to me in the lobby.

I would love to help you discover the truth of Jesus Christ in your own life, and I would be honored to share with you some of the methods I've used over the years to become a better student of God's Word.

There are tools that can be used, and it behooves us to know what they are and how to use them.

It is our privilege to share our faith story with someone else.

A privilege.

I would be happy to help you figure out how to share your story with someone else.

There's a great example in Acts chapter 26.

Acts 26 · chapter mention

I'd love to talk with you about that.

I've always found that people seem to let their guard down around a table.

So, thinking back to that person that I asked you to consider at the beginning of the message, why not share a meal with that person?

Especially if you if you fear that they might not be ready for the second coming of Jesus, why not invite them to lunch or dinner or breakfast, eat with them, and see what God does.

It should be noted here that the blessing is realized with an increase in responsibility.

It does say that he set them over all.

The master sets the faithful servant over all his possessions.

Jesus wants to use you to share his redemptive story and power with more people than you can ever imagine.

And if you live long enough, then perhaps some of the ones you shared with earlier in your life come back to you years later and want to know more.

It's happened to me numerous times.

And just recently, God has brought approximately half a dozen men back into my life after decades of separation and given me opportunity to share with them more insights into his word.

What they don't know is that God is using them to help refine me.

And in the long run, God's faithfulness is actually helping me become a better servant.

The last few verses of Matthew 24 read like this.

But if that wicked servant says to himself, My master is delayed, and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eats and drinks with drunkards, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him, and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites.

In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

So the final question that I think we should consider today is this Will you be considered wicked when Jesus comes back?

I don't like to end a message on a negative note.

Yet that's how this chapter ends, isn't it?

Why is that?

Is that because our world is so wicked?

Is it because we are wicked in the core of our being?

Isn't there a desire for something other than holiness and purity?

Maybe your desire is to just have an easy life.

Or it's a desire to be satisfied, or desire to be loved, or desire to be recognized by others.

Maybe it's a desire to live free from stress or worry.

Maybe you're one of those rare people that desire to have your days filled with thrills rather than responsibilities.

Perhaps you want a peaceful life with no tragedy, no hardship.

Any of those reasons could be the impetus for us believing the lies of the enemy and living just like those around us who do not know Jesus.

But if we live for any reason other than to know Jesus and to make him known, are we really living?

Believing the lies of the enemy leads to compromise.

Either brings us closer to where we want to be or farther away.

And his enduring word commentary has for David Music right this that I found to be so profound.

I wanted to share it with you.

The most dangerous lie is not there is no God.

Not there is no hell.

But the most dangerous lie of Satan is there is no hurry.

It is no small thing to say Jesus is not coming today or for several years because your system of prophecy demands it.

But we need to be ready for the imminent return of Jesus Christ.

Can I get an amen on that?

Come on.

Are you ready?

And by the way, this isn't anger, this is excitement.

Are you ready?

Are you ready?

If not, what is it gonna take?

For some of you, today could be the day that you make the decision to follow Jesus.

Some of you made that decision years ago, but you've never followed Jesus in believers' baptism.

Today could be the day you make the decision to come public with your faith and say, I want to be baptized.

Today could be the day that you say, I want to know how to study God's word.

I want to know how to share my.

Help me to become who you created me to be.

Teach me how to walk with you.

For those who have made that decision but are struggling to know what to do next, Father, speak to their hearts right now.

Whether it's following in baptism or whether it's becoming a student of your word, whether it's becoming a faithful witness and learning how to share their testimony or reaching out to those around them.

May today be the day that we come to you and say, God help me.

And for your glory and in the name of Jesus, we pray these things.

Amen.

We are so grateful today that you're here and that you guys take a chance to uh worship with us together.

And we hope that you were encouraged and challenged with God this morning.

It's been so good journeying through the Gospel of Matthew and seeing the life of Jesus just kind of come to come to life, you know, and and uh and then asking the questions and how do we imitate that?

How what are what are the ways that we can change our lives to look more like the life of Jesus?

And so if you're asking those questions and uh you want to take any steps in following Jesus, we would love to partner with you, give you some resources for your journey.
