The Pilgrim's Call

I'm going to invite you, if you can, just for

a few more moments. I know we've been standing

for a while, but if you're able to, remain standing

for a few more moments, just as I read our verse

today out of the book of Hebrews, chapter 11

And as we begin a series of messages called the

countdown to eternity, the Lord led me to this

passage to Maybe to set the tone, maybe to establish

some things as we move forward in the Holy Ghost.

The word of God says, by faith, Abraham obeyed

when he was called to go out to the place which

he would receive as an inheritance. And he went

out not knowing where he was going. By faith,

he dwelt in the land. of promise as in a foreign

country that's key as in a foreign country dwelling

in tents with isaac and jacob the heirs with

him of the same promise for he waited for the

city which has foundations everyone say foundations

whose builder and maker is god With the help

of the Holy Ghost, I want to preach. I want to

talk for a few moments on this thought. The pilgrims

call. The pilgrims call. Would you pray one more

time with me before you're seated? Let's go before

the Lord. Let's ask God to speak to us. Let's

render the rest, the remainder of the service

into his hands. Father, we thank you. For your

presence that is in this place today, God. All

that you have done already, Lord. The liberty,

God, that is here. And where your spirit is,

there is freedom, God. To worship, to lift our

voices, to lift our hands, God. Oh, Lord. And

to receive your word with gladness. I pray anoint

our hearing today, God, that we can spiritually

perceive. Your Word, God, and apply it to our

lives. Anoint my lips of clay, Father, and put

Your Word in my mouth. In the name of Jesus,

let Your name be glorified. Everyone say, Amen.

You may be seated in the presence of God. Webster's

Dictionary defines a pilgrim as someone or as

one who journeys in foreign lands, especially.

one who travels to a shrine or a holy place as

a devotee. That is what a pilgrim is. And when

we hear the word pilgrim, I know for me, and

like many of you, we might picture those early

pioneers who boarded the Mayflower in the 1600s

and... sailed across the Atlantic to land at

Plymouth Rock. These groups of people were seeking

religious freedom in an unfamiliar land. So when

I think of a pilgrim, I think of those little

black hats with the buckles on them, you know,

and Thanksgiving turkey and all that. That's

what I think. But long before those pilgrims,

there was Abraham. The original pilgrim, And

the thing about Abraham is that he was not driven

by a personal desire to claim his piece of the

pie. It wasn't just like... I don't know if some

of you remember that song. I don't know what

show it was, the Jeffersons, you know, moving

on up. Abraham wasn't just trying to move it

on up to the east side to get his piece of the

pie. Anybody know what I'm talking about? Never

mind. You guys are way too young. Praise God.

But he wasn't just trying to move it on up to

get his steak of the pie and to. and fulfill

some personal ambition that he had in his life.

He wasn't trying to, you know, move on up in

the world, so to speak. What Abraham was after

was something that the world itself could not

offer him. A city whose builder and maker is

God. And he was in good company. You read in

the 11th chapter of Hebrews, the various... men

and women of faith that he is in company with,

this great cloud of witnesses that the writer

talks about of Old Testament saints who, like

Abraham, all believed for a promise. We read

in verse 13, he writes of these saints. He says,

all these died in faith, not having received

the promises. But having seen them afar off,

were assured of them, embraced them, and confessed

that they were strangers and pilgrims on the

earth. That's interesting. I want to look at

that part again. They confessed, they embraced

these promises, although they did never receive

them in the physical world, but they were assured

of them. And they confessed that they were strangers

and pilgrims. Everyone say pilgrims. That they

were pilgrims on earth. Verse 16. But now they

desire a better, that is, a heavenly country.

Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their

God, for he has prepared a city for them. Abraham,

like all the saints of old, believed that God

was preparing a place for them in the heavenly

realm, that there was a destination, that there

was a land beyond this world, beyond what the

natural eye could see, beyond what the physical

world could promise, could manufacture. These

Old Testament saints died. many of which never

got to see it. Even Moses didn't even get to

walk into the promised land. All he got was a

bird's eye view from afar of this land of promise,

the land of Canaan. And that was the case for

many of these Old Testament saints. But I don't

believe that any of them died regretful or any

of them died with any sense of remorse, but they

all died with this belief. That God was preparing

for them something that was eternal. Something

that was beyond the confines of this place of

earth with the boundaries of time and space.

And so what I want to do today is going to lay

this idea in our minds of what it really means

to be a believer in this hour. And we take our

cues from men such as Abraham and others who

saw themselves not as settlers in this world,

but as pilgrims. Amen. Somebody say amen today.

You know, sometimes believers are criticized.

Maybe you have heard this before or have even

been. on the receiving end of this, of being

so heavenly minded that they're of no earthly

good. But I believe today that the church suffers

from the opposite problem. That we are so earthly

minded that we are of no heavenly good. So earthly

minded. See, another name for earthly is worldly.

Worldly. And this is the term that, depending

on how you're talking about it, can mean and

can comprise different things. But worldliness

is something that every Christian, every believer

needs to understand, needs to study, needs to

know what constitutes worldliness because this

is the very thing that stands in direct opposition

to living a life for that eternal place, for

living with eternity in mind. is worldliness.

And it comprises many things. It comprises things.

Can I talk about this for a little bit? Someone

say, go ahead. It comprises many things, such

as imitating the world's ideas and standards

and conforming to its ways. And this is exactly

what Paul writes in Romans chapter 12 about us,

the fact that we are not to be conformed to this

world. Amen? And to this pattern and this is

ways, but to be transformed by the renewing of

our minds. And so to become a follower of Christ,

to become a child of God, to walk with him means

cutting ties with this world. It means turning

your back on this world. Now, don't get it mistaken.

I am not talking about turning your back on people

in this world because we need to love them. But

I'm talking about the world and its system or

its purpose, its intention. But I want to focus

on another aspect of worldliness, which is that

true worldliness is also the worship of the temporal.

True worldliness is the worship of the temporal.

What I mean by that is that it is about loving

the material. the physical, or the natural, and

all that it promises to give us in this life

more than that which is eternal. And so when

we think about worldliness, I don't want us simply

thinking about listening to worldly music, although

it includes that, or doing things that we might

consider very worldly, although it might include

that, secular concepts and ideology. What I want

us to think about in this context is that worldliness

is the worship or it is the affection, the adoration,

the love of anything that is passing away. Anything

that is temporal or physical. And this is in

direct contradiction to the life that God calls

us to live. Somebody say amen today. Hallelujah.

Somebody say amen. You see, we live in a world

that is obsessed. with permanence. We live in

a world that is obsessed with people wanting

to build their own brand. Establish themselves.

We hear a lot about that, right? Gotta establish

yourself. Establishment. And there's nothing

on the surface that is wrong with wanting to

be financially established, emotionally established,

but then It could also go too far where our whole

concept of life and even God's role in creating

the life that we want is more about making this

life more comfortable and more pleasurable and

more satisfying instead of living our life in

the direction of the eternal. And this is the

concept I want us to think about today. I want

to preach to you about, hallelujah, is that there

is these two worlds that we can get caught up

into. The world of the now, of the here and now,

of the present, of the temporal, of the material,

or the world that is forever. The world that

is not going to pass away. The world that God

is creating for us. The city, that celestial

city, that place. that presence, that mansion

that Jesus referred to, that he is preparing

for us. And this is what the church, amen, I

feel this in the Holy Ghost today, this is what

the church needs to set their minds on and their

affections on and their spirits on, lest we become

a prisoner of the now, a prisoner of the moment.

Come on, can I preach like I won't here today?

And the unfortunate reality today is that there

are many that are even in the church that are

prisoners of the moment. And prisoners and making

long -term decisions and eternal weighted decisions

based on temporary emotion and temporary gratifications

and temporary things that we might feel or experience.

And that's the worst thing that one can do. And

that's exactly what the enemy wants us to do

is to make eternal decisions based on how we

feel or what we're experiencing in the moment.

Whatever kind of gratification that we are getting

out of that. But the call of God is not about

us making this life more comfortable. Making

this world more pleasurable. And settling down

and getting more established and more cemented

here. But it's about a pilgrimage. Hallelujah.

It's about walking by faith. It's about living

like this world is not our home. Clap your hands.

And why don't you give the Lord some praise today.

And this is why we need the pilgrim spirit. We

got to have a pilgrim spirit like Abraham. And

there are some things, I've got some concerns

today in my heart as a believer, as a pastor,

as a man that is just in pursuit of the things

of God and caring for the souls that have been

entrusted here. And anyone watching online, this

is the burden that God has placed. And so there

are a couple of things that we're going to just

look at very briefly from the example of Abraham.

by faith, followed the call of God with the belief

that he would receive this eternal reward. And

the first thing that I want to tell you is very

simply, don't settle. Somebody say, don't settle.

Come on, let's say that again. Don't settle.

The Bible says in verse 8 that by faith, Abraham

obeyed. Amen. He obeyed when he was called to

go out. The thing about this call, if I could

just say briefly, is that God didn't give him

all the details. He didn't give him all the details.

God did not hand Abraham a map and an itinerary

and said, Abraham, this is... This is how it's

all going to be. This is where you're going to

go, and this is what it all is going to look

like. All the Lord told him was go. That's it.

Just go. Just get out. Get out from where you

are, Abraham. And that's all he got, and that's

all he heard. But you know what he did? He packed

his bags, and he went. Without an itinerary,

without a plan, without a five -year plan. You

know, he got some real good planners out there,

and I'm not against all of that. But he didn't

get any of that information. He didn't get a

GPS route. Hallelujah. Some of us, you know,

we're so dependent on GPS. We use GPS just to

go to the grocery store now. Oh, Lord, help us.

Hallelujah. I know why you're doing it, because

you're trying to find the quickest route. If

I could save five minutes, two minutes even.

Time is short. My Lord. He didn't get none of

that. All the Lord said was go. And he packed

his bags. And he said, honey, I'm not sure where

we're going, but I heard something. I heard the

voice of the Lord. I heard a call, and it's time

to go. And this is what the nature of the pilgrim

spirit. You'll never be a spiritual pilgrim if

you're not willing to go with just one word from

the Lord. If all God says is turn right. Or turn

left. Or go. Or stop. He might even say stop

sometimes. And just be able to take God at his

word. I'll never be able to possess that pilgrim

spirit. It means that I'm willing to obey without

full understanding. I'm willing to move without

knowing all the details, how it's going to work,

but just trusting in the Lord with all. Lean

not to your own understanding, Proverbs says,

but trust in the Lord with all of your heart.

Amen. Acknowledge him in all your ways, and he

shall direct your path. Somebody clap your hands.

Hallelujah. Abram, Abraham, he could have stayed

in Ur. He had roots there. He had family there.

reputation. He had wealth. He had real estate.

He had everything going for him in Ur. To top

it all off, Ur was like a happening city. Ur

was a metropolitan place. It had culture and

it had infrastructure and it was a wealthy city

and it had a lot to offer. Maybe a family that

was wanting to establish themselves. It had everything

there at the reach of their hand. It was a well

preserved and cultivated place. It had streets

and schools and it even had a legal system the

archaeologists have found. But despite all of

these things that Ur had to offer, it was also

deeply pagan and steeped in idolatry. It was

filled with temples that were erected to false

gods and to false religion. And so The Lord tells

him, you need to get out of this place. You need

to get your mind off of this world. Because if

you stay here with this worldly mindset and this

worldly way of life, you're never going to experience

the eternal things that I have for you. And so

this place of Ur, it means something for each

and every one of us here today. Ur symbolizes

the world, the temporal, the material. the comfortable.

And I have come today to stand before you under

the unction of the Holy Ghost and tell you that

in the same way that God called Abraham to step

out of that place of Ur in order to set himself

on the things that are eternal, God is calling

you to leave your place of Ur, to leave the,

my God, to leave your past behind and to set

your heart on pilgrimage with the radical call

to do everything that God God has called you

to do. Somebody give God some praise here today.

Oh, hallelujah. Woo, my Lord. The problem is

that we've gotten so comfortable in er. It's

like, you know, Ur has so much to offer, and

Ur has so much to give, and it's pleasurable

there. Everything is like as it should be. But

let me tell you, you're never going to reach

that city whose builder and maker is God if your

soul is anchored to Ur. You're never going to

make it. And I've come to break the news to somebody

here today that if you think you're going to

make heaven your home, If you think you're going

to make that city your eternal home while still

being anchored and attached to this world and

to that earth with all of its systems and its

backward ways, you've got another thing coming,

my friend. You've got to make up. I feel this

in the Lord today. You've got to make up in your

mind that you want that eternal. I'm not willing

to stay here in Ur any longer. I want that place.

I want that city. I want that. I don't know.

Is there anybody looking forward to heaven in

here? Is there anybody? I want that place that

God has prepared with a sea of glass and streets

made of gold. That's where I want to be. Hallelujah.

But it's a tug of war. It's a tug of war. Two

worlds pulling you in the opposite direction.

I feel that tension in the Holy Ghost. I feel

that in the Spirit. Some of you are right there.

You feel the pull in one direction. What is your

err? What is that earthly or worldly thing that

is pulling you, that is dragging you away from

the eternal calling that God has for your life?

Oh, you say, Pastor, but err has got so much

to offer. You should have heard the pitch I heard

the other day. what I saw. And if you felt what

I felt, Pastor, I mean, maybe I could just have

my cake and eat it too, you know. Maybe I could

just have a little bit of err in my life and

still make it to heaven. And I'd like to tell

you that you're err wrong about that mentality.

Because while it may be satisfying in the present,

it will eventually leave you high and dry. While

it may satisfy your fancy in the moment, while

it may add a few extra dollars to your bank account

in the moment. While it may provide some good

feelings in the moment, those good feelings are

not going to last. I'm talking to somebody right

now on the edge of making that decision. And

you feel the world pulling you this way. You

feel its culture, its music, its whole lifestyle

and way of doing things pulling you that way.

Its fashions and its trends. But then there is

also the call of God pulling you this way. I

have come to do on this Sunday is help nudge

you in the right direction and tell you whatever

it is that you feel in the Lord. Just lean into

that. Say, yes, Lord, I'm willing. I want to

go all the way with Jesus. Hallelujah. Jesus

said, do not lay up for yourselves treasures

on earth, but lay up for yourself treasures in

heaven. What is the point of laying up treasures

on earth? Jesus said, where the moth. And the

rust. And if that doesn't get you, then the thieves

will break in and take it. But Jesus said, lay

up for yourselves. Invest your time. Where is

your treasures? It could be a lot of things.

Your time, your money, your resources, everything.

Invest it in eternal things. Hallelujah. Why?

Because these are the things that will never

pass away. And Jesus said, where your treasure

is. There your heart will be also. Second thing

I want to point out to you briefly is that to

be a pilgrim in the spirit, you got to have this

attitude. You got to live in spiritual tense.

I was just going to call it live in tense, but

I added the word spiritual just to make sure

you don't understand that I'm telling you to

go, you know, live in a tent somewhere physically.

But hallelujah. But in spiritual tense. By faith,

the Bible says, he dwelt. Let's look at this

together. He dwelt in the land of promise as

in a foreign country dwelling in tents. Now picture

this for a moment. Abraham has been called, or

Abram at the time, called out of his homeland

of Ur. Remember, Ur is his happening place. It's

a city, you know, on the move. And he leaves

that wonderful place. to this supposedly greater

place called Canaan, this land of promise. And

he gets there. He travels there. This was not

a simple thing. He couldn't just catch the next

flight. I mean, there was a lot of preparation,

a lot of sacrifice, a lot of time and energy

to get to this place. And you see him getting

there. Now, if I were Abraham, and I was just

being like a little carnal or something, I might

think, well, This place is so nice. This is what

God has promised me. I might start drawing out

blueprints of where I'm going to put my house.

Y 'all are too spiritual. Praise God. I'm going

to put it right over there by the lake with a

dock. Hallelujah. And I'm going to have this.

I'm going to have that. I'm going to bring in

the best materials. Call my friend from Italy

and bring in marble. Call, you know, the people

from all the corners of the world. I mean, I'm

going to build myself a place. I'm going to build

myself a structure, a mat, whatever it is, because

this is. This is home now. But Abraham did the

exact opposite. The Bible said he dwelled in

tents. Check this. He got to this place he had

been believing for, got to this place that God

had called him to, but instead of settling down

and instead of pouring cement and building himself

a castle, he remained in a tent as if to say,

this is still not it. Oh, my God. This is still,

I believe. Abraham would not allow himself to

build himself a castle or a house on the hill.

And those things are nice and wonderful. But

he did not allow himself to get too attached

to those things because he wanted to remember

and remind himself that this is not the end game.

This is not my final home. This is not what it's

all about. And so, my God, I've come to preach

to somebody here today. I've come to tell you

that no matter where God takes you, No matter

what he does in your life, whatever you do, make

sure you're living in a spiritual tent. Make

sure that you are flexible and mobile so that

this world cannot hold you back. Somebody shout

amen. Come on, shout amen. He said, I can't be

too tied down because this is not it. And the

Bible says that the next generation, even Isaac

and Jacob, they were all tent dwellers. Tent

dwellers. So we, if I could talk to a couple

parents here today, that we have to also pass

this same legacy of pilgrimage. Down to our children.

Understand that while God has been good to us,

God has blessed us. Listen, this is not what

it's all about. This stuff can be here today

and gone tomorrow. It's all about the kingdom

of God. Oh, hallelujah. And our mindset has to

be eternal. Someone say eternity. The problem

is today, as I try to bring this to a closure,

the problem is that In the church, because this

is not just a message for the lost, for the unsaved.

This is the message for the saved. Because the

problem is that in the church, people are trading

in their tents for townhouses and castles and

things that will bind you and hold you back.

And you know what people are doing? They're building.

And if that term building isn't quite registering

with you, they're making decisions. As if you're

going to live here forever. As if this is all

there is to it. My Lord. They're living. They're

planning their life as if this is everything.

But I've come to tell you that this world is

going to pass away. Heaven and earth will pass

away. But the word of the Lord will stand forever.

And this is why, this is why there is such a

call. Hallelujah. There is such an emphasis.

There is such a command on you and I in the word

of God to not love the world. Bible says in John,

1 John chapter 2, it says, do not love the world,

1 John 2 · chapter mention

nor the things of the world. Amen, somebody.

Somebody say amen. If anyone loves the world,

watch this, the love of the Father is not in

him. He said this world is passing away. And

the lust of it, all the pleasures and all the

offers that it has, is all passing away. But

he who does the will of God abides forever. Hallelujah.

You see, let me tell you something. As the piano

player gets ready, give me a couple more minutes,

brother, a couple more minutes. The devil doesn't

have to make you sin, brother or sister. He doesn't

have to make you sin. He doesn't even have to

teach you how to sin. I mean, we kind of learned

that from the moment we were born, right? There's

a sin nature in us. He doesn't have to teach

you. All he has to do is make you fall in. All

he has to do is make the world attractive enough

so that you will choose it over God. Are you

hearing what I'm saying today? That's all he's

got to do. If he can make this attractive enough,

who enticing enough, shiny enough, glossy enough,

who if he can just sell you on the fact that

this world has something to offer you, it in

itself will pull, it'll cause every kind of sin,

ungodly, it'll all kind of fall into place naturally

if he could just make it, if he can sweeten the

pot enough to draw us out from where we belong.

That's all he's got to do. So the issue is not,

is the world bad? Of course it is. The issue

is not, is God good? Of course he is. The issue

today that we stand and that someone stands up

today is, what am I going to do? What voice am

I going to listen to? Hallelujah. Can I tell

you? I'm going to tell you again. You can't have

both. You can't have one foot in the world. You've

heard it before. And one foot in the Lord. Hallelujah.

You've got to either make up in your mind. He's

already here. Praise God. Hallelujah. I didn't

call you up, brother, but you're here. I told

him two minutes to fairness. Hallelujah. And

the thing is that you've got to make up your

mind. You're either going to forsake the world

and love God. Can I make it plain? Someone say

make it plain. You're either going to forsake

the world and love God or you're going to forsake

God and love the world. You're either going to

forsake the world, turn your back on the world,

and love God and love his kingdom and pursue

his kingdom with everything, with your heart,

your soul, and your strength, or you're going

to forsake his purpose and love the world. This

happened. I don't have time to get into it, but

there was a man named Demas that worked very

closely with Paul. Put up the scripture for me

right now, the next verse. Hallelujah. There

was a man that walked with Paul. He was an assistant

with Paul. He was like one of his apprentices,

almost like a Timothy to him. But look at what

it said. For Demas has forsaken me. Why? Having

loved this present world. My God. Demas. Demas

is a wake -up call to everyone sitting in this

church today. You know why? Because he was walking

with the apostle, and he still backslid. I mean,

this guy saw the wonders of God. He got a front

row seat, the apostle Paul. Maybe he even, like,

wiped the sweat from his brow as he was preaching.

I don't know how close he was to him. But he

was active. He was not some fringe, wishy -washy

member of the church. He was right. He was on

the team. You can be on the team and still miss

his will. I say this with the fear of the Lord,

with all reverence. Hallelujah. How does that

happen? Because somewhere along the way, His

love shifted. Somewhere along the way, his heart

shifted. And he replaced his love for the things

of God, with the things of the world. And you

know what happened? It overpowered him. He couldn't

resist. Oh, I feel this in the Holy Ghost. He

couldn't resist. It was just too strong. I just

can't. And it was probably weighing on him. And

he was just thinking, man, how much longer? He

didn't know how to leave Paul. How am I going

to break into Paul? So more than likely, he just

slipped out in the middle of the night. Maybe

he wrote him a letter. He forsook him. He just

dropped. out of the scene he said i can't resist

and he gave in to the love that he had for this

present world and he missed out on his eternal

calling someone here today under the sound of

my voice it doesn't and the reason why the lord

brought this to mind this man is for you to understand

it doesn't matter where you're at in the lord

today it doesn't it doesn't matter how active

or inactive how involved or uninvolved how committed

or uncommitted it can happen to anyone and i

as As the man that God has placed here this afternoon.

I don't want to see any one of you lose out for

that home that we have in heaven. Oh, but we've

got to be a pilgrim. We've got to say in our

faith. We've got to say in ourselves. This world

is not my home. I am just a pilgrim passing through.

I don't want to be associated with it. I don't

want to build roots in it. I don't want to. I

don't want to identify with it. I want to just

live as a pilgrim. Would you stand to your feet

this afternoon in the presence of the Lord? That's

what I want. That's what I want. That's what

I want. I want to be a pilgrim. And there's a

pilgrim's call today. There's a pilgrim's call.

There's a pilgrim's call. There's a pilgrim's

call. I wonder if you hear it today. I wonder

if you hear it. There's a city. Oh, Abraham,

Abraham. He was waiting for a city whose builder

and maker is God. A city with foundations. A

city that was established. A city that was unshakable.

A city that was unmovable. It was the kingdom

of God. I have come to preach somebody into that

place. I have come to preach somebody into that

spirit. I have come to tell you today that there

is nothing better. There is nothing sweeter.

There is nothing greater than living for God.

So tell the world goodbye. Come on, do I got

a witness today? I feel the Holy Ghost here.

I feel the Holy Ghost. That's all I came to preach

today. But this is the word of the Lord for somebody.

This is the word of the Lord for the church today.

Oh, hallelujah. We were singing a little while

ago. Oh, I loved it. I said, with the world behind

me, we were singing. The cross before me. decided

here today I will follow Jesus hallelujah come

on why don't you worship him why don't you bless

him why don't you thank him today hallelujah

oh hallelujah come on why don't we just get into

the spirit right now oh hallelujah come on why

don't we get into the spirit right now come on

i know god is talking on somebody's heart right

now i know the lord is speaking to somebody right

now i know you feel it in your spirit today there's

nothing better than living holy there's nothing

better than living for the lord there's nothing

better than punching your ticket to heaven there's

nothing better than saying this world is not

my home world you can have your pleasures you

can have your sin You can have your lust. You

can have this and you can have that. I don't

want any of this. I want Jesus. This world is

not my home. Give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. Is

there somebody today that wants to step out and

say, Give me Jesus. that's alright as long as

I've got Jesus I've got everything that I need

oh hallelujah oh I feel God working right now

I feel him working right now yes I do yes I come

on somebody just wants to you hear the voice

of the Lord you hear the pilgrims call you're

never going Get this day for the rest of your

life. This day is going to change the rest of

your life. Because on this day. You heard the

pilgrims call. On this day. You heard the pilgrims

call. On this day. You heard the voice of your

beloved. Saying come unto me. All you who are

weary and heavy laden. And I will give you rest.

Come unto me. Oh. Take my yoke upon you. For

my yoke is easy. The devil has tried to tell

you it's hard to serve him. It's hard to be apostolic.
