  1. When you're able, I'm going to be reading today

  2. a little bit more than usual, but if you can

  3. bear with me out of Mark chapter nine, if you

  4. can go there with me or look at the screen, Mark

  5. chapter nine, verse 17. Amen. I'm going to read

  6. a few portions of scripture here. And as I was

  7. preparing, I was about 90 percent done with this

  8. sermon when I decided to take a look. at our

  9. YouTube, but I wasn't here a few weeks ago, and

  10. I saw that our deacon, Brother Ben, preached

  11. out of this same text. And I said, oh man, he

  12. preached it before I did. So if you were here

  13. a few weeks ago, I pray that you don't think

  14. this is a repeat or a rerun. We're going to try

  15. to bring something out of it. But I was too deep

  16. into it. I couldn't back up. I said, I'm just

  17. going to have to preach it anyhow. But there's

  18. always something new and something different

  19. that God brings out, right? And the word of the

  20. Lord reads this way. Then one of the crowd answered

  21. and said, teacher, I brought to you my son who

  22. has a mute spirit. And whenever it seizes him,

  23. it throws him down. He foams at the mouth, gnashes

  24. his teeth and becomes rigid. So I spoke to your

  25. disciples and they that they should cast it out.

  26. But they could not. How about that? He said,

  27. I brought you your disciples, him, and they could

  28. not cast it out. And he answered him and said,

  29. O faithless generation, how long shall I be with

  30. you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him

  31. to me. Someone say, bring him to me. Then they

  32. brought him to him. And when he saw him immediately,

  33. the spirit convulsed him and he fell on the ground

  34. and wallowed. Foaming at the mouth. So he asked

  35. his father, how long has this been happening

  36. to him? And he said, from childhood. From childhood.

  37. And often he has thrown him both into the fire

  38. and into the water to destroy him. But if you

  39. can do anything, have compassion on us and help

  40. us. And Jesus said to him, if you can believe.

  41. all things are possible to him who believes.

  42. Verse 24. Immediately the father of the child

  43. cried out and said with tears, Lord, I believe.

  44. Help my unbelief. When Jesus saw that the people

  45. came running together, he rebuked the unclean

  46. spirit, saying to it, deaf and dumb spirit, I

  47. command you, come out. of him and enter him no

  48. more. Somebody say amen for that. Then the spirit

  49. cried out, convulsed him greatly and came out

  50. of him and he became as one dead. So that many

  51. said he is dead. But Jesus took him by the hand

  52. and lifted him up and he arose. I'm going to

  53. preach for a few moments on the thought, bring

  54. it to Jesus. Bring it to Jesus. I'm going to

  55. invite you to pray with me. Let's ask God to

  56. speak to us. Father, we love you today. We thank

  57. you, God, on this special day as we celebrate

  58. and honor our fathers, which your commandments

  59. tell us to do to honor them. And so we do that

  60. today. But we also honor you, our heavenly father.

  61. And we thank you, God, for your goodness and

  62. your mercy today. Ask God that you would speak

  63. to us today, Lord, that you would touch our hearts

  64. and our minds and be glorified in this place,

  65. God. In Jesus' name we pray. Someone say amen.

  66. For those of you that scroll on Instagram, you

  67. may have noticed that there's sometimes a media

  68. that is deemed sensitive and is blurred out.

  69. And you get a warning screen, a warning screen

  70. that says... this video or this picture contains

  71. content that some people find upsetting. I don't

  72. know. Has anybody ever seen that? And then you

  73. have to tap. If you still want to see it, right,

  74. you have to tap the video. And if you do that,

  75. you do at the risk of being disturbed or offended,

  76. right? It's a risk. Or you can do what I do oftentimes.

  77. I just keep scrolling. I don't want to see it.

  78. I don't want to know what's behind that blurred

  79. image. But sometimes you can't resist. You're

  80. like, ah, what are they hiding from me? I want

  81. to see it. Well, our text today doesn't come

  82. with a warning screen, even though it is one

  83. of the most traumatizing, if not disturbing,

  84. scenes in all the Gospels. And you'll find that

  85. through every story of Scripture, there is no

  86. warning. We just... We come upon them. No blurred

  87. images to hide the graphic nature of this man's

  88. crisis. No filters to make it look better than

  89. it appeared. And no edits to polish the flaws

  90. that we see even in the Father's faith. It's

  91. so raw. Everything about this scene is so emotionally

  92. raw, upsetting, and intense. One of the more...

  93. intense scenes in all of the Gospels, in all

  94. of the ministry of Christ. And there are some

  95. very intense scenes, some very traumatic, very

  96. dramatic episodes in the ministry of Christ.

  97. This is one of those that ranks among the highest

  98. in terms of its sheer rawness, its sensitivity

  99. to the eyes and the ears. of all of those who

  100. were actually there that day to witness this

  101. happen. And maybe that's why it speaks to us,

  102. all of us, not just fathers, because in the middle

  103. of this situation is a desperate father who is

  104. willing to do everything he can to find a solution

  105. for his tormented son. But it speaks to all of

  106. us because we all know what it's like to carry

  107. something that, we cannot control. Amen, somebody.

  108. A problem that we thought we could solve, a pain

  109. we thought would heal in time, a need in our

  110. family or home that we thought we could manage

  111. or even hide, sweep under the rug and contain

  112. in some way. At some point you realize that even

  113. as children of God, we are not immune to the

  114. traumas of life, the pain of sin, or the frustration

  115. of a delayed answer. We're not immune to these

  116. things. I wish that we were. I wish that as God's

  117. people, we didn't have to go through these types

  118. of things. Amen? How many of you wish that too?

  119. And we will get a few pats from the traumas of

  120. life. But even as God's children, we too come

  121. to realize that the rain falls on the just and

  122. the unjust. And no one can escape these things.

  123. Not in this side of eternity. And such is the

  124. case for this father. We don't know the whole

  125. back story of this father and his son. How the

  126. son became enslaved to his condition. So it's

  127. best not to speculate as to why. But what is

  128. clear, however, is that it was not a new problem.

  129. This was not something that just happened the

  130. night before. When Jesus asked how long he had

  131. been tormented, he answered, from childhood.

  132. And that two -word answer reveals a lot about

  133. how the enemy works. I want to, for a few moments,

  134. alert all of us to the strategy of Satan. We

  135. must not only know the strategy of Jesus, church,

  136. we also need to know the strategy of Satan. Somebody

  137. say amen. Satan has a strategy. And it's revealed

  138. in this two -word answer. How long has this been

  139. going on? From childhood. That says a lot, doesn't

  140. it? What it tells us, first of all, is the pattern

  141. of the enemy. One that we see all throughout

  142. Scripture. We see it from the very beginning

  143. of Scripture. It's such. Infamous stories as

  144. Pharaoh issuing a decree for all the Hebrew baby

  145. boys to be thrown into the Nile River. We see

  146. it even in the time of Jesus when King Herod

  147. issued an order for the elimination of boys and

  148. to kill children. We see this time and time again.

  149. Scripture is filled with... This repeated effort,

  150. threat of the enemy to kill and to destroy a

  151. life as young as possible. So when the father

  152. says from childhood, it tells us something about

  153. the way the enemy works, which is to destroy,

  154. to crush, to diminish a life as young as possible.

  155. So at some point in this. This young man's life,

  156. a door was open. We don't know. We don't want

  157. to speculate. But at some point, his life was

  158. affected. His life was attacked by the enemy.

  159. And this is why we need strongholds. We need

  160. churches. We need fathers and mothers and everybody

  161. to get in and to help protect our children. Amen?

  162. our children. Come on, somebody say amen to that.

  163. He wants to invade their life as young as possible

  164. to destroy them. So the father says his childhood.

  165. It also reveals the tenacity of the enemy. Satan

  166. is stubborn. He is stubborn. Once he has a foothold,

  167. he doesn't surrender that easily. The fact that

  168. he had since childhood, his grip on his life

  169. that easily. Once Satan establishes a foothold,

  170. he intends to stay there. He intends to set up

  171. camp. He intends to stay there for generations

  172. even, from generations On the door. He's not

  173. going to go because of you. You beg him to leave.

  174. Or because time has passed. No. He intends to

  175. stay there. So when the father says. you Jesus

  176. because First point today is that we've got to

  177. recognize the real battle is spiritual. Somebody

  178. say man today. The real battle. Someone say the

  179. real battle. Someone say it's spiritual. Notice

  180. the father said. He said. People may have misjudged

  181. the problem in this son's life as being purely

  182. behavioral. They may have misunderstood his suffering

  183. as being only a mental health crisis or a series

  184. of emotional outbursts. People... for just being,

  185. you know, something he's doing for attention

  186. even. Something that is purely physical or emotional.

  187. I said, man, you know, they really got to talk

  188. to their son. They got to get this thing under

  189. control. He understood that this was a spiritual

  190. attack. That while there may be outward symptoms,

  191. physical symptoms, emotional symptoms, mental

  192. symptoms, he's not denying it. It's not just

  193. another philosophy. It's a spiritual attack.

  194. It's the enemy trying to infiltrate the minds

  195. of society and young people and children. And

  196. so we must be alert. Amen. Come on. We must be

  197. sober -minded and understand that this war that

  198. we're in is spiritual. of Jesus. And so I'm here

  199. to tell you, if you need spiritual help, you're

  200. in the right place. Amen. I said you're in the

  201. right place because at the root of it all is

  202. spiritual. Secondly, we must learn from this

  203. man that we cannot afford to get stuck in disappointment.

  204. He said, hey, these guys have been with Jesus.

  205. They are his students. It's so easy to say, you

  206. know what? Forget all of this then. You know,

  207. it's false advertisement. I didn't get what I

  208. thought I was going to get. It didn't happen

  209. the way I thought it was going to happen. And

  210. this father could have done what many people

  211. do when things don't go according to plan. They

  212. just give up and walk away. But something in

  213. him would not let him give up. This father was

  214. to... And that's what we need today. You know

  215. what we need? We need some people with determination.

  216. Come on, help me out here today. I said, what

  217. we need is some determination. We need some determination

  218. from people today that says, you know what? Like

  219. Jacob, when he wrestled with God, I'm not going

  220. to let you go. Until you bless me. There is something

  221. to be said about determination that is needed.

  222. I believe that we need a revival of determination.

  223. about what... Just like this man did. He was

  224. disappointed. And his disappointment was that

  225. your disciples failed. Let me tell you something.

  226. People are going to fail you. Hello, somebody.

  227. Anybody ever let you down? I'm sure they have.

  228. People are going to fail you. They're going to

  229. let you down. There have been times in my life

  230. where people... never fail you. I said, how many

  231. of you don't ever fail you? The church will let

  232. you down. Religion will let you down. Organizations

  233. will let you down. They'll fail you. They'll

  234. disappoint you. But God, God never fails. God

  235. is faithful. God is faithful. I see people walk

  236. away from church because of something that somebody

  237. said or did to them. They disappointed them.

  238. They broke a promise. For whatever reason. And

  239. the thing I've always got to tell these people

  240. is take your eyes off of them. Don't serve God

  241. based on other people. Don't come to church looking

  242. for validation from other people. Don't come

  243. to be impressed or be perceived by other people.

  244. Get your eyes off of them because those people

  245. are going to disappoint you. He gave this thing

  246. another chance. And that's what God is telling

  247. somebody right now. Why don't you try again?

  248. Why don't you try again? Give it another chance.

  249. But I already did it that one time. It didn't

  250. work out. I had the best intentions, but that

  251. one sister, man, she looked at me cross -eyed.

  252. Forget it. I'm not coming back next Sunday. A

  253. lot of people are going to look at you cross

  254. -eyed. Hallelujah. But you can't let somebody

  255. Who discourages you or disappoints you, keep

  256. you from your... This man could have done that.

  257. He could have said, what's the use? Why even

  258. bother? If Jesus' disciples couldn't fix it,

  259. why would I even keep trying? But there was something

  260. in him that said, you know, I can't give up that

  261. easily. No, I've got to press a little more.

  262. Amen, somebody. I've got to try a little harder.

  263. I've got to be determined about this because

  264. what if God will do it this time? you'll suddenly

  265. say, well, because you're the pastor. No! Ah!

  266. Because you've got to go down and read all the

  267. things that he will not do. No. Like when he

  268. said all things are possible. That means all

  269. things. Every form of disease. stand up on your

  270. feet right now and help me give God some praise

  271. would you help me give God some glory would you

  272. help me worship him would you help me bless him

  273. would you help me magnify him hallelujah oh thank

  274. you Jesus sometimes we miss our miracles because

  275. we're trying to present God with the faith that

  276. we wish we had instead of the faith we God is

  277. saying, if you just give me what you've got.

  278. Give me the little faith that you've got. Give

  279. me that mustard seed that you have. And watch

  280. what I'll do with that. Because I could do a

  281. whole lot more with imperfect but sincere faith

  282. than I can with fake. insincere faith. I've seen

  283. people walk out of services still hurting, still

  284. wounded. Not because God didn't want to heal

  285. them. Not because God didn't want to work a miracle

  286. in their life, but because of their pride. They

  287. were more concerned about how other people would

  288. perceive them. They were more concerned about

  289. how other families would judge them. They were

  290. more concerned about how it might look. How it

  291. might be perceived because we're more concerned

  292. about that than we are sometimes about getting

  293. what we need. But this father, let me ask you,

  294. do you think he cared what other people said?

  295. In fact, you know it got worse before it got

  296. better? Right when Jesus was delivering the young

  297. man, the Bible says that he convulsed again.

  298. Can I tell you that when things get worse, sometimes

  299. that means you're right on the verge of a breakthrough.

  300. You say, but it's getting worse. If it's getting

  301. a little worse, if it's getting a little more

  302. intense, all that tells me is you're that much

  303. closer to seeing a breakthrough in your life.

  304. anymore and he's throwing everything that he

  305. can at you and he's acting out and he's spiraling

  306. out of control he's losing his grip and he's

  307. panicking and so right when Jesus was about to

  308. deliver him the son went through another episode

  309. but that was the last time because Jesus said

  310. come out of him and enter him no more I've come

  311. to tell somebody it might look a little worse

  312. before it gets better and his power. I don't

  313. know if there's somebody right now saying, I

  314. need God to do it right now. But I invite you

  315. to pray right where you are. Oh, hallelujah,

  316. hallelujah. God wants to touch you. God wants

  317. to deliver you. God wants to touch your family.

  318. God wants to bless your home. God wants to bless

  319. your children. God wants to bless your family.

  320. In the name of Jesus, I speak it right now. I

  321. speak. I speak deliverance. I speak it in Jesus'

  322. name. Deliverance. I bring down every stronghold.

  323. I bring down every vice. I bring down every curse.

  324. In the mighty name of Jesus, I decree and declare

  325. this right now over somebody's life. I rebuke

  326. the heart. I feel the Holy Ghost right now. I

  327. rebuke the hand of the enemy that's been on your

  328. mind. and on your spirits and attacking you in

  329. the midnight hour. I rebuke it right now. The

  330. devil is a liar and he's the father of lies.

  331. I rebuke his hand right now and I command him

  332. to take his disgusting hand off of your mind.

  333. Jesus, I declare it right now. God is moving

  334. in this place right now. I need somebody to get

  335. a hold of it. I need somebody to tap into it.

  336. I need somebody to believe for it. Even if just

  337. a little bit, brother. Believe. Believe that

  338. it's possible. Oh, God. Hallelujah.
