  1. Welcome to the Life Bible Church podcast. We

  2. want to thank you for joining us today, and we

  3. hope you find today's sermon impacting as you

  4. listen to it wherever you are in your daily walk.

  5. To find service times and watch messages online,

  6. see our website at lifebiblechurch .org. Now,

  7. enjoy this week's message. I want to, I saved

  8. this manila, or I think it is manila envelope.

  9. Jenny and I were, last week we're at the country

  10. church in Malala, the church just south of Estacada

  11. and longtime friends. And, you know, you think

  12. that everybody's aware of the circumstance. I'd

  13. send out a video to our MFI church family, but

  14. they just in life had not had a chance to read

  15. it, to view it. And so when they were asking

  16. us, because we were doing prophetic ministry

  17. there, and Saturday afternoon they asked us,

  18. well, what's going on with your guys' life? And

  19. I kind of looked over my glasses and went, are

  20. you serious? Yeah, yeah, what's happening? What's

  21. happening in Harrisburg? Well, how long we got?

  22. And so I just said, here, watch this video. And

  23. they were shocked. So there on Sunday morning,

  24. impromptu, they had not prepared. They just said,

  25. hey, church, we're putting some baskets up front.

  26. If you want to sow into our pastor's lives, this

  27. is going to go for the river wall. That's what

  28. they've asked it to go for. Anyway, they sent

  29. me this envelope and I didn't open it. I had

  30. no idea. I said, Deanne, I want you to count

  31. it, keep it, and then give me the envelope back.

  32. Because there was another church, Joy Church

  33. in Eugene, two weeks ago. Pastor Jake called

  34. me and we were meeting about the MFI regional

  35. that we'll be hosting here. And he goes, hey,

  36. I just am reading on your website what's happening.

  37. Are we still meeting for coffee? I said, yeah.

  38. And so at coffee, he slid over a check on behalf

  39. of their church. And so two churches so far.

  40. Malala Country Church, north of us. Joy Church,

  41. Eugene, south of us. And I brought this envelope

  42. up and I'd just like you to stretch your hands

  43. toward it. It represents every person that gave

  44. outside of our house for those churches that

  45. are partnering with us. They're in our fellowship.

  46. They're part of our covenant relationship. Would

  47. you just pray with me? Father, I want to thank

  48. you. I want to thank you for every person. Lord,

  49. in the Malala Country Church, every person. Lord,

  50. at Joy Church, Eugene, I want to, say thank you,

  51. first of all, for putting it on their heart.

  52. Lord, to go outside of their own needs, their

  53. own building programs, their own things that

  54. they're doing, Lord, and what you're doing in

  55. their house, Lord, to partner with us. Lord,

  56. we trust you that you're bringing this in. We

  57. don't know how you're doing it, but Lord, Here's

  58. an evidence of those that are inside the house,

  59. Lord, where you've done so much already and you're

  60. still doing it. But Lord, those that are also

  61. family outside of our own church family and you're

  62. bringing it in. Lord, we bless them. I ask you

  63. to pour back into them. Strengthen them now.

  64. In Jesus Christ's holy name. Amen. Can we just

  65. tell God one more time, thank you. I've got to

  66. get going here pretty shortly. Lots going on

  67. this morning. I do need you to know that this

  68. weekend, as I was just sitting down to ask the

  69. Lord, what are you wanting to do? And it's communion

  70. weekend. And I don't know if I have labored.

  71. I mean, I do that when it comes to special theme

  72. messages on Christmas and Easter, but there was

  73. such an atmosphere of blockage. And I asked the

  74. Lord, I said, what are you wanting me to do on

  75. Sunday? I mean, I try to sit down every Thursday

  76. morning early before the weekend and there's

  77. a time of me just waiting and asking the Lord.

  78. What is your word to this church? And as I was

  79. just waiting on the Lord, I knew God was going

  80. to do something over the weekend because of the

  81. fast. I just didn't know how it was going to

  82. transpire. But I want to deal with this subject.

  83. We touched a little bit on it a few months ago

  84. about Jesus laying aside his garment to wash

  85. the disciples' feet. We looked at that in John

    John 13 chapter mention

  86. chapter 13. The next time that Jesus had his

  87. garments touched. If I could set the stage this

  88. morning, as we come to this table, one of the

  89. key things about coming to the communion table

  90. is understanding and evaluating and appreciating

  91. what the Lord has done for you and I that we

  92. might appreciate our salvation. Our appreciation,

  93. our wonder, our love for him should grow every

  94. time we take this table. And as I was going through

  95. and I had looked at John 13 and we talked about

  96. it at supper, Jesus got up and setting aside

  97. his garments and took the lowest place as the

  98. servant in John 13 and he washed the disciples'

  99. feet and we recognize, Jesus was willing to lay

  100. aside every aspect, every title, every single

  101. thing that man would have put on him to do what?

  102. To model, but not to model for model's sake,

  103. but to live and show that that element of who

  104. he is is not only was real with them, but it's

  105. real with us. And then we, We move into, if you

  106. will, the Passion Week story. And we begin to,

  107. you can go ahead and just hold there, but you

  108. stay there. I won't be long. We move into the

  109. Passion Week story and we move into the time

  110. of sham trial, the time of betrayal, the time

  111. of going to the cross. I think, Jesus' understanding

  112. here of laying aside the garment on the institution,

  113. finishing Passover and inaugurating communion.

  114. The apostle Peter really had something to say

  115. about this when he said in 1 Peter 5, 5, he said,

  116. clothe yourself, all of you, with humility toward

  117. one another. For God opposes the proud, but gives

  118. grace to the humble. And as I was just looking

  119. at John 13 and getting myself immersed in that

  120. passage and listening to the Lord as he's dealing

  121. with each disciple and dealing with Peter specifically,

  122. it dawned on me as I read 1 Peter 5. Peter was...

  123. Peter wasn't writing the scripture just from

  124. only having a reference of, okay, I'm just now

  125. hearing that from the Lord. Yes, he did hear

  126. it by the Spirit of God as he was moved along

  127. to write this in 1 Peter 5, 5. But his reference

  128. would have been the table where Jesus was washing

  129. feet. That would have been a direct reference

  130. as the Holy Spirit would have brought his mind

  131. right back to watching Jesus take off his, put

  132. on the servant's towel, which was the clothing

  133. of humility toward one another. And that's the

  134. whole verse of John 13. As you've seen me do

  135. this to you, now do to one another. And so Peter

  136. brings this back up in his letter. He says, clothe

  137. yourself. And then he said, all of you. He didn't

  138. leave out one person. He didn't leave out. the

  139. one that maybe already feels humble. He didn't

  140. leave out the wealthy or the leader. He said,

  141. all of you put on and clothe yourself with humility

  142. toward one another for God opposes the proud

  143. but gives grace to the humble. And we can all

  144. see the incredible love and humility in Jesus'

  145. demonstration at his table with his own disciples.

  146. That's evident. But what happens when it's not

  147. about, what happens when humility is asked of

  148. us and it's not about with those that are with

  149. you? It's one thing in a beautiful environment

  150. with the piano playing just lightly, just something,

  151. just quick, just quickly. Oh, you took everything

  152. off. I just needed you to play something just

  153. real quick. You see, when the environment is

  154. beautiful and like, you know, you just kind of

  155. just, you know, synchronize church worship, you

  156. know. It's one thing to wash one another's feet

  157. in a setting where there's relationship and love

  158. and mutual respect and admiration. It's another

  159. thing when you deal with people that aren't part

  160. of you. Their shoes aren't quite as nice. Okay,

  161. good. Yeah, let's not hurt him. I know, I hurt

  162. him quite a bit most of the time, so we're going

  163. to be gentle. So the Lord says you have to be

  164. gentle with the Gentiles. In the fact that when

  165. people aren't so lovely, when they're not as

  166. friendly, when they don't know you, Or they don't

  167. want to know you. What does it look like to put

  168. on the garment of humility? It didn't say when

  169. conditions are right, then put it on. It's when

  170. conditions, weather conditions are always perfect

  171. for the garment of humility. There's never a

  172. time where the garment of humility doesn't suit

  173. the occasion. And so when we think about this

  174. next time, what Jesus goes into, of course, he

  175. models and he lives among those that he loved

  176. and he gave his life for. But as we move into

  177. this next process, the next process where we

  178. see Jesus having his garments removed, it wasn't

  179. purposeful out of loving service for the disciples.

  180. The next time his garments are removed, it is

  181. Jesus submitting to the fact that his garments

  182. are being either forced off of him or others'

  183. garments are being put on him. Jesus humbly,

  184. peacefully yields to the act of removal of garments

  185. when it wasn't him that initiated it. As I was

  186. reading this passage, I thought, Lord, this is

  187. where persecution... begins to work at the church

  188. at a different level. It's one thing when we

  189. all can get along. It's another thing when we're,

  190. maybe we don't all get along, but we're trying

  191. to love one another in the spirit of unity and

  192. we're now told to be humble and forgiving with

  193. one another. It's when now you're forced into

  194. places that others choose to remove your garment.

  195. What do you do? When others choose to remove

  196. the garment that God gave you, your dignity,

  197. your honor, what happens when they remove that?

  198. What comes out? As we begin to see in Jesus'

  199. life, Jesus humbly and peacefully yields to the

  200. acts of his removal of garments. Out of love

  201. for the Father and out of love for you and I.

  202. The second reference here is seen in Luke chapter

    Luke 23:8–11

  203. 23, verse 8 through 11. When Herod saw Jesus,

  204. Herod was very glad for he desired to see Jesus

  205. and had heard about him and he was hoping to

  206. see some sign done by him. So Herod questioned

  207. Jesus. At some length. But Jesus made no answer.

  208. The chief priests and the scribes stood by. Vehemently.

  209. Accusing him. Now. If you've watched any form

  210. of news. Over the last. Several weeks. You have

  211. seen people. Vehemently. Get in someone's face.

  212. And accuse. The accusations. invading of personal

  213. space the and I'm not saying I'm not talking

  214. about the legal issue of the right to protest

  215. I'm talking about the viciousness of it Herod

  216. now listen I'm using it as a context to put your

  217. mind now at Herod's palace at the if you will

  218. the palace governmental court And the atmosphere

  219. that was around Jesus at that moment, take what

  220. you've seen on the news and transfer it now into

  221. black and white at that palace at that day is

  222. exactly the environment of what this is saying.

  223. They were vehemently accusing him. And Herod

  224. and his soldiers treated Jesus with contempt

  225. and mocked him. It's the whole context for why

  226. I brought up what I'm bringing up. Verse 12 of

  227. Luke 23. Then arraying Jesus in splendid clothing,

  228. Herod sent Jesus back to Pilate. Standing before

  229. Herod, Herod known as one of the most bloodthirsty

  230. and evil kings that Jerusalem had ever known.

  231. This is the same one that ordered because he

  232. didn't know in the lineage, they didn't know

  233. where the baby Jesus would be born, ordered for

  234. the destruction of all the two and three -year

  235. -old male children of his own people. Jesus did

  236. not answer one question. Jesus did not do one

  237. thing to impress or turn the tide. Jesus did

  238. not impede in any way their full, mockery, insults,

  239. false witnesses, blasphemy, intensity, and he

  240. did not stop them from putting on him something

  241. that was of their own making. Isaiah 53, 7 says

  242. this, Jesus was oppressed. He was afflicted.

  243. and yet he opened not his mouth. Like a lamb

  244. that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep

  245. before a shearer's is silent, so he opened not

  246. his mouth. This prophecy was fulfilled standing

  247. in front of Herod. Now listen, it says if you

  248. read different gospel accounts, it was in front

  249. of scribes and Pharisees. It means what? team

  250. of lawyers, a team of religious clergy, soldiers

  251. in high command and government officials. He

  252. opened not his mouth. Notice Herod's questioning

  253. was at length. Accusations came from the religious

  254. leaders and the scribes. Have you ever watched

  255. a committee meeting on C -SPAN? Okay, three of

  256. you, great. I know it's just part of our national

  257. process, but in that process, if you watch a

  258. committee call in a special witness, you watch

  259. on the politically charged stage on those that

  260. whoever's on that committee trying to ask questions

  261. to most of the time, not to find out the truth,

  262. but to prove a political agenda. And you watch

  263. the source of questions. Even when the true answers

  264. are given, for the most part, they just keep

  265. asking other questions. It doesn't matter. It's

  266. A, you have to sit and endure the ridicule. And

  267. that's what it's become, unfortunately. Here

  268. Jesus is standing at the ridicule. Herod and

  269. his soldiers are treating Jesus with contempt.

  270. And Jesus never loses the garment of humility.

  271. Now we don't know, the scriptures is silent in

  272. this part and it's a 50 -50 point. Did they keep

  273. Jesus' garments on him and put their own over

  274. the top? Or did they disrobe Jesus and put the

  275. garments on? Because the text is silent, we probably

  276. would have to lean on the fact that they just

  277. covered up what Jesus was wearing. With the garments

  278. that they brought. What does the text say? They

  279. brought garments out from the king's palace.

  280. The only garments. That are going to be from

  281. the king's palace. Was Herod's personal clothing.

  282. That because. And you need to see the intensity

  283. of the mocking. As we get ready to take this.

  284. Because it wasn't not. just a servant's garment.

  285. They were expecting from the rumors of Jesus'

  286. three and a half ministry, they were expecting

  287. a world -renowned something. No one had done

  288. the miracles that Jesus and his team had done

  289. by the very power of God. No one had more, raising

  290. from the dead ever. No prophet in history had

  291. raised that many from the dead. Jesus had already

  292. raised a boy, a girl, Lazarus. Herod was expecting,

  293. he'd met John, he liked John, didn't like his

  294. message, and ended up having to kill John because

  295. of his rash oath. And now he's standing to the

  296. one that John said he was the forerunner of,

  297. that he wasn't even fit to untie this man's sandals.

  298. And Herod is almost giddy with excitement of

  299. getting to now be brought to him in a personal

  300. audience, this man who claimed to be the son

  301. of God. And Jesus said nothing. and did nothing.

  302. Hmm. Said nothing, and did nothing. And because

  303. of that, after question, after question, provoking,

  304. accusations, sedition charges, false witness,

  305. finally it was said, and you can just hear it,

  306. hear it, bring me a garment. From my closet.

  307. Most likely it was a used garment. But one of

  308. the finest. That the world could have made. Garments

  309. that were crafted. For kings. And royalty. Jesus

  310. never asked for a beautiful robe. Jesus. Jesus

  311. never asked. For a kingly robe. Or for worldly

  312. rulers robe. Yet. If anyone deserved to wear

  313. something like that, it would have been the Lord.

  314. But Herod ordered a garment of political importance

  315. to be placed on Jesus. And in doing so, Herod's

  316. mockery and shame would be placed on Jesus as

  317. a garment representing this man. By Herod doing

  318. this, This man is only fit, of all you people

  319. that think he's something, he's only fit to wear

  320. my leftovers. Jesus standing there now in one

  321. of Herod's garments is now being sent back to

  322. Pilate. A mocking gesture. Herod was saved to

  323. Pilate with, Herod now sending Jesus in that

  324. garment. Jesus didn't say anything, didn't do

  325. anything. And the text shows us through the scripture

  326. that Jesus did not throw that garment off and

  327. say, get that puke Herod's junk off of me. He

  328. didn't say that. He would wear that garment back

  329. into Pilate's presence. He would wear it. And

  330. Pilate would be receiving the message from King

  331. Herod that Jesus was no threat to Rome. It spoke

  332. to everyone in political power that would say

  333. this man is no king according to Roman standards.

  334. This man is a sham of a king. He's a pretender

  335. and a serious nobody. You see, by Jesus receiving

  336. the garments of the world and refusing to take

  337. it off, humility said, you can put on me whatever

  338. you want to put on me, but I know in whom I came

  339. from. I know who I am, but I will not be forced

  340. or coerced. to identify or partner with the world,

  341. its governments, its power, or its political

  342. efficacy for the sake of aligning with your agenda.

  343. The mocking nature of the world that would be

  344. placed on Jesus. And listen, hear me, an aligning

  345. with religion. It was one of the clearest. Parts

  346. of scripture that it was scribes, meaning what

  347. the lawyers of the law, the Pharisees, the religious

  348. of the law, working together with political power

  349. to derobe, to... deride to put down. And now

  350. in a final gesture of Herod who represented kingship

  351. and government of this world, throwing on Jesus

  352. a huge robe and sending him back to Pilate to

  353. be finally tried as a condemned man there. But

  354. I think about, and we're gonna receive communion

  355. now if the ushers would come. When I think about

  356. this and I think about getting ready to take

  357. this cup and take this bread in the few moments

  358. that lay ahead and maybe we'll deal with this

  359. another communion message but there would be

  360. two more times that the garments would be used

  361. in the crucifixion process between the scourging

  362. and the crucifixion, two more times, there would

  363. be a forced disrobing and a placing on and a

  364. placing off. The first time Jesus decides to

  365. remove his outer garments, he does it on the

  366. basis of voluntary love to remind us what our

  367. obligation to one another is and to the world.

  368. The second, the third and the fourth time that

  369. his robes are touched, that his garments are

  370. removed and that other garments placed on and

  371. off of him to cause pain and shame is a reminder

  372. that we better have fellowship here with Christ.

  373. Because where we're moving, I know we don't like

  374. to hear this, but where the church is moving

  375. in the ages, comes from the power of having fellowship

  376. with him as the world gets more hostile toward

  377. the Jesus that we serve. And he'll reach out

  378. and they'll try to throw garments on you or they'll

  379. try to take garments from you. That's the nature

  380. of what the world does. The key is the garment

  381. that you get to carry and wrap around ourselves

  382. is the garment that Jesus girded himself with,

  383. the towel and the cloak of humility. Would you

  384. stand with me this morning and let's pray. And

  385. as we come around this table, you can come around

  386. both sides. You can grab bread on both sides,

  387. cup on both sides. We'll take it at the end together.

  388. But as you do so, would you just, they're gonna

  389. sing a song here. You're welcome to sing that

  390. chorus with them. But as you're doing so, I want

  391. you to make it an understanding in your own heart

  392. this morning of saying, God, you were stripped

  393. of all dignity, all shame, all dishonor, all

  394. mocking, all vehement things that we know that

  395. people can do and say and be. You experienced

  396. it. There's nothing that I will ever go through.

  397. In this world that you haven't already gone through

  398. for me in advance. Give me love. And give me

  399. the cloak of humility. That I find my identity

  400. in you. Thank you for this meal. And thank you

  401. for this table. Father. Now bless. Each person

  402. this morning. As they come to your table. Let

  403. us partake of the richness of your fellowship

  404. with us. Thank you for loving us. Thank you for

  405. serving us. In Jesus' name, God bless. Thank

  406. you for taking the time to listen to this week's
