The Way: RLC Values (4- We Choose Joy)

As always, y'all look so good this morning.

I'm glad you got up, got here and I'm ready to get in the Word with you this morning.

Amen, yes, let's do it.

I'm excited about today.

Okay, my name is Brandon Gillum and I'm honored to be a part of the teaching team here at RLC, and I'm humbled and every time I'm afforded the opportunity to get up here and learn the Word of God with you and I'm very excited for today.

So there's no great introduction, no story or anything like that.

We're just going to get right into it today and if you've been with us the last couple of weeks, thank you for that.

If you've been with us the last couple of weeks, we're continuing in our series this morning called the Way.

In this series we're taking time to highlight the foundational characteristics of Jesus and then how we can apply those to our lives in an effort to be able to live the way that he lived.

And the big idea for this series, the Way, is that as true believers, we don't just seek to believe, but we seek to become more like Jesus.

Or, as you've heard Pastor Brandon say all of Christ in all of life.

Brandon say all of Christ in all of life.

And as believers, that is so important to understand that it's just not our mission just to come here on Sunday and just to learn, but that we, as the body of Christ, are supposed to envelop the characteristics of Jesus and then go out.

And my hope for all of us is that everybody, through you, outside these four walls, sees those characteristics and in you can see the goodness of God.

If you got your Bibles with you this morning, you can go ahead and open those up to John, chapter four.

I want to go through one of my favorite stories in the Bible with you this morning, but before we do that, I want to talk to you about the characteristic that we're looking at this morning, which is the characteristic of joy, and in this message we're calling this message choosing joy.

Jesus says it like this in John, chapter 15.

John 15 · chapter mention

He says yes, I am the vine and you are the branches.

Those who remain in me and I in them will produce much fruit, for apart from me, you can do nothing.

I think that's one of the most important parts of this verses From apart from Jesus, we can do nothing.

And then it says I have told you these things so that you would be filled with joy and that your joy would overflow.

That sounds good to me, right?

I will take some of that every day, please, and you for that?

Now it's important that you see the title of this message.

Okay, the title of the message is called Choosing Joy, and it's called that for a reason.

It's one of the core values here at RLC.

It's our desire that, as believers, that we would go out and we would be choosing to be joyful.

Joy is a lot like love.

If you've been married for any length of time, then you know you've experienced those butterflies, that newness feeling that wells up inside of you.

It's the greatest feeling in the world and that is the feeling of love.

But I don't know anybody that said that's always there, right?

If you've been married for some time, you realize that that fades.

And there's a reason for that, because love is not just enveloped in a feeling, but love is a character.

Love is a covenant, commitment, a choice to decide to put somebody else before your own.

And if that leaves you with a feeling, it'll never last, Because when that feeling leaves, it says I'm deciding to love you only when you're giving something back to me, and that's not the way of Jesus.

Jesus is the way of others.

We choose to love each other well, in a marriage ceremony, it says, through thick and thin, sickness, and in health, and good times and bad times.

That's why all of that is there.

God made love a choice.

Just as we have the free will to choose him or to turn away, in that same way that love is a choice, joy is also a choice.

As believers, we should be choosing joy, and I understand that that can be hard sometimes.

I struggle with that on the daily.

Some days you're just not feeling it, some days you're sick, some days you're tired, some days you're distracted, you're burdened.

And that's when you need to remember joy stems from the branches of Jesus.

But because it does, then so we can assume that when we're caught up in our own self, when we're caught up in our sin self, when we're caught up in our sin, it makes sense that joy would then fade and that we wouldn't feel joyful anymore.

And that's the way of Jesus, because he wants us to choose joy, to choose it.

So today I'm going to give you three components of joy, and then I want to break them down.

So I'm just going to give them to you up front and then we're going to go through those together.

If you want to experience the overwhelming joy in your life, I want you to understand these three components.

Now there are more, but these three are very important, and the first is this servitude, servitude, servitude.

The second, gratitude, gratitude.

And the third, wisdom, attude, wisdom, wisdom.

I wanted to keep the rhyming going there, so let's start with number one.

Here's what I want you to see about servitude, one of the greatest callings Jesus teaches us in the Bible.

Aside from sharing the gospel, aside from spreading the message, he calls us to serve each other.

He calls us to hold each other up, and a lot of times that goes against our natural bin, that goes against the natural way of society, because we are a fallen people and to be able to serve each other means that you have to step outside of your own self-interest, and we live in a culture that will lead you to believe that in some way, stepping outside of your own self-interest is in some way degrading or beneath you.

However, that's a lie.

Servitude in the scripture is the path to humility, to love, to purpose in your life and, ultimately, to the greatness in the kingdom of God.

Servitude is that way.

In Matthew 20, 26 through 28,.

Jesus says it exactly like this Whoever wants to become great among you must first be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave, just as the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Let me give you another one Galatians 5.13.

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free, but do not use your freedom to indulge in the flesh.

What does that mean?

Do not use your freedom to indulge in your own self-interest.

It is not for you, it is not about you, it is for each other.

Rather, serve one another humbly in love.

Humbly in love.

Satan's plan for destruction in this world is no secret.

He comes to kill, to steal and destroy, and he wants to steal your joy, because that kills your love and ultimately will aid in the destruction of your relationship with Christ, which is his ultimate goal.

And here's what I want you to know about the enemy.

This is what Satan does.

He could care less if your focus is on him.

He could care less if you believe in him or if he's some story Doesn't matter.

Your focus could be on you.

Your focus could be on work.

Your focus could be on work.

Your focus could be on a hobby.

It doesn't matter to Satan.

He cares that your focus is not on God, and when it's not, he wins, he's winning.

And one of the many ways that he does that is he gets us to focus on ourselves, the somewhat victim mentality, our own self-interest, and when we focus too much on what we want and what we desire, then we forget what our number one focus should be the desires of God, the desires of God for your life, and just as the Bible teaches us the Trinity of God, and just as the Bible teaches us the Trinity of God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, satan's lie is that there's a different Trinity, that there's a false Trinity, the one that he stands on, and what he wants you to believe is that the Trinity is more about me myself and I, me myself and I.

And if he can get you to focus on me myself and I, then he can pull you into the darkness.

And there is no joy in the dark.

I promise you, I've been there.

There is no joy there.

The joy comes from standing in the light of Christ.

Jesus teaches that that life, though he loves you, though he wants good things for you, though he wants you to have the great desires of your heart, real joy doesn't come from anything that you can produce.

Real joy doesn't come from success.

Real joy doesn't come from you doing this life great in your work, in your hobbies.

Real joy comes from him and his way is the way of the servant Servitude and love.

Joy is a reciprocation of servitude.

The second component of joy is gratitude.

As believers, it is God's desire for us to strive to always live in an attitude of gratitude.

This is something that I've continually worked on in my life.

I still struggle with, but recently I'm at a point that I've been trying to begin my morning prayers with a heart of thanksgiving.

Before I ask for anything else, before I bring anything else to God, bring Him gratitude.

1 Thessalonians 5, 16 through 18 says it like this.

It says Rejoice always, pray continually and give thanks in all, everybody, say all All Circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

It says pray continually and give thanks in all circumstances.

And I'll tell you exactly why the scripture is written that way.

It's written that way because in all circumstances there is always something to be grateful for, always.

And many times my prayers in the morning simply start like this when I can think of nothing else, I take a deep breath and I say Lord, thank you for this breath, thank you for this moment, for this opportunity to come closer to you through your word, for my family, for my children, for your sacrifice, for the nail pierced hands, for your grace that is poured out upon us, that is poured out upon us.

I'm thankful.

I'm grateful, and I know you've heard me say this before, but I'm going to say it again.

There is a scientific study that shows the brain does not operate.

You cannot hold both thoughts physically, biologically, you cannot have anxiety and gratitude at the same time.

They do not exist together in the brain.

Try and think of a time that you have ever been grateful and worried at the same time.

It doesn't exist.

They've proven that.

And when you start your day with gratitude, see if he won't lead and direct you.

Start your day with gratitude, see if he won't lead and direct you.

It silences the voice of the enemy, it deafens him.

You'll no longer start to hear you can't do this, this isn't good, this is as good as it gets.

His grace is freely poured upon you and maybe what you need to do is maybe in the morning, you should just start a prayer journal.

Just start a prayer journal and specifically start a gratitude journal and when you get up in the morning, start to write it out and start small.

It doesn't have to be complicated.

Thank you for this moment, thank you for this breath, but do it first thing in the morning, choose joy and gratitude and let him lead and direct your day.

And I promise you, when you seek out gratitude, when you look for things to be grateful for, they will become easier and easier to find Sometimes.

I think God will allow you to see in a glimpse of somebody's life, to be able to recenter your focus.

Does that make sense?

Have you ever had that happen before, where you've been caught up in yourself, where you thought, man, this stinks and somebody else, you see into somebody else's life and it recenters your focus?

That happened to me week before last Went on a fire department run.

No big deal, but this run was a 13-year-old girl who had attempted suicide.

13 years old, knew nothing of the joys of this life, nothing.

Swallowed up in shame for what I will tell you was simply a moment, a moment, and she thought I can't do this anymore.

Thankfully, in her innocence, she didn't take anything dangerous, but it was just a moment and I looked at her and my heart broke for her.

She has no idea the goodness that is in her.

She has no idea the goodness that is in her Beautiful girl, the joys of this life that God has for her.

And then, man, I just imagine the courage it took for her to call for help.

Her parents didn't even know when we got there.

They thought we were at the wrong address, until she came to the door crying and I thought can you imagine the courage it took to make that call?

You're dragging yourself out in the light.

There's no hiding it anymore.

Swallowed up in that, I prayed for that girl all week.

It broke me.

She didn't even know the joy in life.

Matthew 6, 34 says so do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries.

Today's trouble is enough for today.

Now I'm going to tell you something here.

I'm going to be a little bit vulnerable.

I used to read that scripture and think, well, that's really unmotivating.

That stinks To me.

That says, well, today stinks and tomorrow stinks too.

Already, you know right, don't have any hope.

That's what I used to think that scripture read like and there's many verses in the Bible that you could read that way and they come off that way.

But that's not what they mean.

Read that way and they come off that way, but that's not what they mean.

Because if you read them that day or if you read them that way, then you don't know the heart of the speaker.

You don't know the heart of Jesus, and you realize, when you know the heart of Jesus, when you know the heart of the Father and when you know the heart of the Holy Spirit, that that's not what they mean at all.

I read an excerpt about this specific verse in particular, and the author says read the verse.

And then he goes on to say now read the verse again, but imagine Jesus telling it to you with tears in his eyes.

That's what the scripture means here.

It means I've got you today.

Just worry about today, because I've got tomorrow for you already too.

And the worries that come with tomorrow don't matter, because, as I'm holding you up today, I will hold you up tomorrow too.

This moment, this moment right here that you are experiencing, is the only one that is a guarantee to you.

Hopefully, the next moment comes for all of us, but this moment right here is the only one that is a guarantee.

And Jesus says live this moment with gratitude and thanksgiving.

One of the things that baffles me about us as people and I'm including myself in this, trust me is that it seems like when things are going good for us, that when things are going well and things seem smooth, our minds always shift to the past.

We'll always bring up worry from the past, or sometimes we'll focus too much on the future, what needs to be done, and we aren't able to quiet ourselves and quiet our thoughts and stay right here in this moment and have gratitude in it.

But on the other end, when things aren't going well, when there's worry and anxiety that creeps in, when the enemy gets into your head, then we can't get out of this moment, we can't focus our thoughts anywhere else.

But what is happening right now, in this moment, and you can't drag yourself out.

I thought why is that?

The truth of the matter is is that God is the author of all time.

He's the author of all three the past, the present and the future.

And we should use the past to remind ourselves how good God has been to us in the past.

And when you can remember how good God's been to you in the past, then you can live in this moment with gratitude and joy.

And we use the future to know the promises of God, to know what's in his word, what's to come, an assurance of the future, an assurance of eternity.

And that brings joy to this moment.

That we stay in right now that we can be grateful for all three.

I heard a quote.

This isn't my quote, but I loved it.

It said there is only one singular person in the entire world that holds the title of I've got it the worst.

I've got it the worst.

Have you ever thought about that?

How often do you think that to yourself?

But there's only one singular person in the world that holds that title, and it is not me, and I promise you it is not you.

I cannot tell you who it is, but it is not you and it is not I.

So when you start your morning, start your morning with an attitude of gratitude, let the Lord into your head before you can get in there yourself.

Gratitude is a reciprocation of the grace that you've received, and joy is a reciprocation of the gratitude that you have because of that grace.

Last one wisdom, wisdom.

What an amazing gift.

We all have the ability to be able to attain it, yet few of us really seek it out.

Why is that?

We're not born with it, but it's there for the taking.

Why, then, is it so hard to reach for?

I thought about that with me.

Why, if it's good for me, why am I not reaching for it, and I think for some of us it's because we know what comes with it.

We know what we're going to find.

We know ourselves.

The wisdom that God provides will supernaturally pull you out of the dark.

It will pull you out when you seek his wisdom.

When you seek him, he will pull you out and he will pull you into the light.

A very wise, wise man once said this.

I don't know if you've ever heard this before, but everybody has a private battle.

Nobody knows about Wise words.

Wise man, here's what I want you to know about my personal opinion.

This is me, my opinion on what wisdom is At least a good portion of it anyways.

Wisdom is the ability to be well aware of knowing the things that you cannot do on your own.

Wisdom is not gained in the dark, and you cannot beat sin by yourself in the dark.

The Bible tells us that the enemy is the ruler of the dark, so you cannot beat it on your own.

True wisdom is found in the word of God, and part of that is having the willingness to ask for help.

Part of that is having the willingness to ask for help, to know that you can't do it on your own, to drag your sin into the light and come to terms with.

Enough is finally enough.

There's a study out if you haven't noticed, I'm a statistics guy but there's a study out that shows the effect on the brain that the Word of God has and it says that if you read the Word of God one day a week so if you were to just come to church and just study the Bible while you're here and then go back out into your regular lives and do that once a week there's almost no chemical change in the brain.

Nothing happens.

If you read it two times a week, no measurable change.

If you read it three times a week, there's a small change, but not enough to create a pattern, to correct yourself, not enough to create a good habit, a good habit.

But if you read the Bible four times a week or more, the brain lights up, you're filled with gratitude and joy.

The Bible says that these people that took this study turned away from things like lust and pornography and that they got into the word and they became overwhelmingly empathetic to other people and they filled their lives with gratitude and joy.

Why is that?

Because they're seeking out spiritual wisdom.

Spiritual wisdom, being a believer at its simplest level, the very baseline level, but with a great, great impact, is knowing the Word of God well enough to be able to let go of your own thoughts, which will deceive you, and replace them with the promises of God, with the promises of God.

That is what Christians do, and when you begin to be able to do that, when you begin to recall the word and recall God's wisdom, then it brings about gratitude and joy.

Joy is a reciprocation of spiritual wisdom and I want to show you this whole thing through one of my very favorite stories in the Bible the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well.

This is in John, chapter four, and we don't have time to go through the whole thing.

I'm going to have to start landing this plane here, but I want to give you a little bit of a background.

I want to highlight this for you if you haven't read the story.

Okay, the history of the Jewish people is that the Jewish people and the Samaritans did not get along.

There was a whole lot of discord there, okay, but the Samaritans, they claimed descent from the northern Israelite tribes, and then came this Assyrian conquest of the northern kingdom of Israel and all of those Israelites were exiled, okay, and when they were exiled, then foreign people came in.

Foreign people were brought in to repopulate these areas, and what you got was these foreign people that were intermarrying with these Israelites that were already there, and you got a mixed population, and I don't mean a mixed race.

The Bible talks about a mixed population in the way of a believer marrying an unbeliever.

The Bible says an unevenly yoked couple.

And the problem with that is then comes children who are confused Because the mother worships one way and the father believes this way, and then all of the sudden, the children don't know what to do.

And so because of that, in the eyes of the Jewish people, the Samaritans were religiously compromised.

Samaritans follow the first five books of Moses' teaching, called the Pentateuch, and they've got a little bit different view on the Mosaic law.

Now that history really isn't important to this story, but what I want you to see, the main point, is that there was a great dislike for each other, that Jewish people and Samaritans would avoid each other at all costs, whenever possible.

Other, at all costs whenever possible.

So in John, chapter 4, jesus, when this story begins, is traveling from Judea back to Galilee, and at best this is a three-day journey through the desert and he says to his disciples we're going to stop in Samaria.

I want to speak to this one woman.

He's seeking out this one Samaritan woman at the well.

Okay, so he goes by himself to this well at the very top of the hill, and the Bible says that it's in the sixth hour.

Okay, lame, in terms, that's noon, noon, and that's important because at this time that is the hottest part of the day.

It's not when most would draw water from the well.

It was actually, culturally, the children and women's job to draw the water from the well for the day and take it back to the family and the livestock, and so they would do that first thing in the morning, in the coolest hours of the day.

But Jesus sought out this one woman that he knew would be at the well at the hottest part of the day, this one woman who was swallowed up in her sin and her shame.

And if you haven't read the story of the Samaritan woman, she's been married five times and the man that she lives with now, the sixth man, isn't her husband.

She's an outcast to the people.

Everybody knows her past, everybody knows her story, everybody knows her sin.

And so she comes to the well at the hottest part of the day for one of two reasons One, because nobody wants to be around her, or she doesn't want to be around anybody else, because she's tired of the whispers and she's tired of the gossip and she's tired of being reminded how she's messed up.

I love this story.

I sympathize with this woman.

I have felt that drowning feeling before, where you cannot pull yourself out of the dark, you cannot physically do it yourself, and it feels like your sin is just trudging behind you in the dust, right there to follow you wherever you go.

This well that this woman is at is a very famous well.

It's a well that Jacob and his sons established years before.

It's an ancestral well.

So I want to start this story and I want us to pick up in verse 7.

So Jesus is at the well.

He's waiting for this woman.

Verse 7 says soon.

A Samaritan woman came to the well to draw water.

So she has no idea at this point who Jesus is.

She just sees a Jewish man sitting at the well and Jesus said to her please, please, give me a drink.

And he was alone at this time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.

And it says that the woman was surprised, for Jews refused to have anything to do with the Samaritans.

And she said to Jesus you are a Jew and I'm a Samaritan woman, why would you ask me for a drink?

So here's what I want you to see in this You're about to see the full process of biblical joy come full circle in this woman's life, and it starts with Jesus.

The way that he opens up to this woman, initially to show her there must be something different.

He offers the opportunity for her to step outside of herself and fill the need of somebody else.

Do you see that?

You see where he asks for a drink?

Servitude.

He offers her the opportunity to serve.

Can you imagine how long it has been for this woman to have talked to somebody that doesn't know her past, that doesn't know who she is?

That's component.

One Joy is the reciprocation of servitude.

Verse 10 says that Jesus replied.

Says that Jesus replied.

If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me and I would give you a drink of living water.

What's he talking about?

This living water?

It's eternal joy.

It's eternal life joy.

It's eternal life in Christ Jesus, who is at this very moment sitting directly in front of this woman.

Look at verse 11.

It says but, sir, you don't have a rope or a bucket.

She said, and this well is very deep, where would you be getting this living water?

And besides, do you think you're greater than our ancestors, jacob, who gave us this well?

How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?

Then it goes on to say anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again, but those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again.

It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.

Let me tell you what Jesus is saying to this woman directly.

He is saying it doesn't matter about your bucket and it doesn't matter about your rope.

You're drinking from the wrong well.

You're at the wrong well.

And so often we do that we search for these different buckets to bring us joy.

We hold on to these ropes that give us nothing Our jobs for satisfaction, more money, a bigger truck, more buckets and more buckets.

And Jesus says those are not the things that bring joy.

You're at the wrong well.

Things that bring joy You're at the wrong.

Well, verse 15 says Please, sir.

The woman said Give me this water, then I'll never be thirsty again and I won't have to come here to get water.

And that's the change.

That's the first initial change that can kind of see in the woman herself A reach for the wisdom that Jesus is offering, a reach for something better, for joy that he says that he has.

And I love this next part, because Jesus really well, he goes savage on her.

It's just what he does.

And he says go get your husband first.

I want to tell you both.

And she says well, I don't have a husband.

And this is what Jesus says.

He says you're right, you don't have a husband, for you've had five husbands and the one that you live with now is not your husband.

And you have certainly told the truth.

And I say it's savage, but what I really mean is it's with pure love that he calls her sin into the light.

It's the only way to be freed from it.

He calls it out of the darkness and into the light, and when he does that, it allows this woman to step outside of what she thinks about herself for a second, allows her to step outside of that sin.

And who knows you better than the one that knows your sin, the one that knows the things that you do in the dark, the one that is willing to take the light to the dark, to grab you, to pull you back into the light?

Who knows you better?

But the one who loves you more than any other, jesus Christ.

And the story goes on for some additional verses and I'd love to read the whole thing to you, but I want you to read it for yourself.

But the next part says that the woman was so overwhelmed with joy that she left her bucket.

And I want to show you one more thing, one more thing.

Remember, I told you the Samaritans read the Pentateuch, the first five books of Moses' teaching.

So do you remember in Exodus, when God is commanding Moses to go and speak to the Israelites?

And Moses asked him suppose I do go.

When I go and I speak to the Israelites, who should I tell them is simply, and God says to Moses this is what you are to say to the Israelites.

You tell them I am, that I am the one, the only I am, has sent you.

This woman would have been very familiar with that.

John 4, verse 25, says that the woman said I know the Messiah is coming, the one that they call Christ, and when he does, he will sort this out and he will explain everything to us.

John 4:25

And that's the NLT version.

But then if you read the footnotes, it references this exact passage in Exodus that this particular woman would have been very familiar with In the original language.

It would have been more like not I am the Messiah, but Jesus would have said to her I am the I am and I am here now.

I am the I am.

And this woman not even a Jew drowning in her own sin, jew drowning in her own sin is the first time publicly that Jesus revealed himself as the Messiah, because through her sin she would experience an overflowing joy.

And that story goes on to say as I told you, the woman left her bucket at the well, so, filled with joy, ran back to town to tell these people who hated her, everything that she had heard, didn't even remember what she'd ever done, didn't care.

That's an overflowing joy, and Jesus offered it to her with an opportunity to serve, an opportunity to step outside of herself and experience gratitude.

And then he called her sin in the light so that she could experience the wisdom of God, the wisdom that he had to offer her a living water, an eternal life.

Joy is very much your choice and the way to it is the way of Jesus To serve, to be grateful always in all things and to seek out his face, to seek out his wisdom, be grateful and choose Jesus.

There is an overflowing joy waiting us all, but it is very much your choice and it's very much there for the taking.

And I want you to know that what I tell you now, I tell you in love, I love you, I love you there is very much a real countdown on humanity.

It's a ticking time bomb and it is counting down each and every moment.

Each and every moment it gets smaller and smaller and smaller, and each and every one of us, we have come into this world with nothing and I promise you we will leave with nothing.

It is the truth, nothing tangible anyway.

But there is one thing that you can take, one thing God tells you to take as many as you can, to take as many as you can, and the way to do that is to portray your joy on them.

Let them see your gratitude, let them see that living water in you.

Make no mistake, the truth is at hand.

The Bible says the I am is coming again.

He will be here.

Jesus will come again and this time he isn't coming on a cross, but when he comes again he'll come on a white horse and he'll come with the armies of heaven and he'll come with the truth, and the Bible says that a sword will come from his mouth, the word of God, for that is what he is, and it will strike down the nations and it will divide them into two types of people those that believe and those that don't.

But every knee will bow before him, every single one, believer and unbeliever.

You will bow and you can look upon the face of Christ with overflowing joy and you can say to him Lord, thy will be done.

That is there for you.

Or you will fall to your face in fear of the king of kings will be done.

That is there for you.

Or you will fall to your face in fear of the King of Kings.
