  1. We're that normal. If you're here and you're

  2. like, what is this? This is how normal we are.

  3. We're family and family enjoys just banter, right?

  4. Like family enjoys banter. Here's what I know

  5. about life. And I know this because I'm living

  6. it right now. Life is hard. Life is hard. And

  7. life can be hard unexpectedly. And we were made

  8. to need each other. We were made for community.

  9. And in my own life this week, there have been

  10. needs that came out of nowhere, that community

  11. has been wrapped around and been loving us. And

  12. I'm not ready to get into all those details yet.

  13. At some point, I will. But just know that, like,

  14. if you're here and you go, what is this about?

  15. Here's my hope. That you would see a group of

  16. people that believe Jesus so much that they put

  17. themselves in community because he calls his

  18. family. That when you see the way the family

  19. of God treats and cares and loves that you go,

  20. hey, this is not this authentic nature of community

  21. is not available anywhere else on the planet

  22. other than in the family of God. And it points

  23. you to Jesus. And I hope because you are with

  24. the family, you get to meet Jesus. I guess the

  25. hope in all this, because he's the only thing

  26. that's going to change. He's the only thing that

  27. is going to change your life for the better.

  28. He's the only one that's going to empower you

  29. to live the life he always intended you to live,

  30. being human. And so we're just we're just here

  31. going, hey, we're a bunch of people, normal,

  32. ordinary, football, loving football, hating some

  33. of you. Right. People that we're just stumbling

  34. towards Jesus and stumbling towards this God

  35. who is good in nature and loves us. And we don't

  36. even deserve it. And yet he loves us so much.

  37. And so if that's you and you're here and you're

  38. like, I'm trying to figure this out. Welcome.

  39. We're glad you're here. Maybe you're across the

  40. screen and you're like, I didn't know I was getting

  41. that today. And you're welcome. We're glad you're

  42. here. With that, we do these things called collections,

  43. right? Collections of talks. I know some people

  44. have an issue with collections of talks because

  45. they're like, it's a series, okay? Okay, if you

  46. go to Netflix and a new series comes out, what

  47. do you do with that series that you've been waiting

  48. for? You binge it. And then what do you do? You

  49. forget about it. Right? Like, when's the next

  50. one coming out? Right? Okay. The hope of this

  51. is as we spend time together in a collection,

  52. the hope is that the Holy Spirit gives you something

  53. from the Bible about God, about your life, about

  54. Jesus, that you just go, man, I got to hold on

  55. to that. I got to collect that. Right? Because

  56. what do you do with a collection? You keep it.

  57. It's valuable to you. And so the hope is that

  58. as we spend time together, this becomes valuable

  59. to you and you walk away holding something that

  60. will transform and move your life in the direction

  61. that God has for you. So we're in a collection

  62. of talks. And that collection of talks specifically

  63. has been wrapped around prayer and the idea that

  64. we need to do something different. And I'm speaking

  65. to myself because this is where it came from.

  66. I realized one day my prayer life's not good.

  67. I'm going to change my prayer life. How do I

  68. do that? Man, I got to. I got to read a book.

  69. And in reading the book, I got really mad at

  70. God. And in getting mad at God, I discovered

  71. I don't need more information. I need more transformation

  72. through action in my life. That if I'm going

  73. to have a prayer life and I'm going to be close

  74. and intimate the way God died to connect me to

  75. him, to give that to me, then here's what I need

  76. to do. I just have to pray. Right? Like it's

  77. like somebody who goes, I just want to be healthy,

  78. but then they don't do anything to get healthy.

  79. You know what I mean? You're like, you're never

  80. going to be healthy. That's just the reality

  81. of what you're doing. If you want to pray, the

  82. only way to pray is you've got to pray. Right?

  83. Like that's it. It's that simple. You just have

  84. to pray. And along with that, we talk week one

  85. that we've got to reframe what prayer is. And

  86. so prayer is this gift that waters into life.

  87. Prayer brings us to water into life all the things

  88. that God's put inside of you that he always intended

  89. to be a part of your life, to grow and mature,

  90. right? And then we talked about as you pray,

  91. another gift is as you pray, you end up seeking

  92. and seeking leads you to find a person and person

  93. leads you to a table that we had over here. And

  94. at the table, hopefully what happens as you sit

  95. face to face with God, you have honest conversation

  96. and discover that he's provided everything you

  97. will ever need. to grow and mature into who he's

  98. called you to be. And then last week, if you

  99. were here, we had leaf blowers and generators

  100. and all kinds of different stuff. But the big

  101. idea behind it was this, that prayer is a gift

  102. because it ties you back into the purpose and

  103. mission that God has always had for you. Prayer

  104. is the way that the power of heaven is released

  105. through you. That when you engage in prayer,

  106. what you're doing is you're taking the connection

  107. that cost Jesus his life and I'm plugging into

  108. it to allow the Holy Spirit to flow through me.

  109. And I join God in co -shaping and co -managing

  110. and bringing the resources of heaven into the

  111. present moments of life. That prayer has the

  112. power to do that. One of the clearest ways we

  113. see this is when we see somebody who is sick,

  114. who needs healing, and God shows up. Can I just

  115. tell you that I've had two people in the last,

  116. like last night and then this morning, share

  117. that they decided they were going to take this

  118. idea of prayer and they were going to pray big

  119. prayers. And both of them had to do with cancer

  120. and healing. And both of them this morning talked

  121. about and last night talked about that God has

  122. showed up and has healed what was sick. This

  123. is why you being plugged into the resources of

  124. heaven is so important, and the way that it is

  125. released is through prayer. So Jesus says you're

  126. going to pray specifically, right? Now that brings

  127. us to today. Have you ever been in a situation

  128. where you might have been the person that had

  129. the means to help somebody else, and they knew

  130. that you had the means to help them? Often this

  131. happens when you travel. For me, I got to go

  132. to Kenya a bunch of years ago. And specifically,

  133. there's a vision trip of how could Heights partner

  134. with some of the things that are happening within

  135. Kenya. And so we got to go to these areas, these

  136. different slums, and one of them was massive.

  137. It was so large, it just sprawled and sprawled

  138. and sprawled. But on the way to the slum, here's

  139. what was interesting. On the way to the slum,

  140. Up on the hill, there was a school that looked

  141. like Hogwarts, right? Like it had been kind of

  142. designed after Hogwarts. So you had this Harry

  143. Potter -esque school on the hill that was private

  144. for the rich people. And then roughly about seven

  145. miles, I think it was, you got to this slum that

  146. had so many people, I couldn't count them. And

  147. by slum, I mean like... There's human waste on

  148. the path. It wasn't a street. We're talking a

  149. narrow path between houses and human waste on

  150. the ground. There's these shacks that barely

  151. holding together. Anything they could find had

  152. been kind of put to make a shelter of some sort.

  153. And wouldn't you know that as we're visiting

  154. and we're sitting down, they're looking at me.

  155. and going, you can help, right? They're going,

  156. you're a person of means. You can make a difference

  157. about this. And so what is the natural thing

  158. to do? They ask. I don't know, just a side note,

  159. you guys, we don't realize how blessed we actually

  160. are. You know what I mean? Like we whine about

  161. the stupidest stuff sometimes, don't we? And

  162. yet sitting in that moment and realizing, realizing,

  163. To them and their situation, yes, I have the

  164. means to transform what's in front of me. And

  165. what was the natural thing for them to do? Because

  166. they recognize that, to ask. And I think that's

  167. what Jesus is kind of building within Matthew.

  168. We read these verses last week, but in Matthew

  169. chapter six, you remember the context was the

  170. disciples have asked him. Would you teach us

  171. how to pray? And you can go back and kind of

  172. hear the frame up to this, but this is his response

  173. to how to pray. This then is how you should pray.

  174. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

  175. right? So our Father, so relational connection

  176. to this heavenly being, to this supreme being.

  177. but you're my father, so there's relationship,

  178. and your name is higher than any other. There's

  179. no name, right? So when you were just praying

  180. during worship, and you were reordering, like

  181. I've made it about other stuff, and it's about

  182. you because you're the highest, that's what this

  183. is getting at, right? Like this prayer is, your

  184. name is the highest. Verse 10, your kingdom come,

  185. your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  186. If you were here last week, we talked about this,

  187. that this is connected to this massive purpose

  188. and mission that God has always had for humanity,

  189. that you would be someone who would reflect the

  190. image of God, who would take the resources that

  191. God has provided, the resources of heaven, and

  192. you would bring them into this moment. And essentially

  193. heaven would crash into earth because of you.

  194. And what would happen, and his transformation

  195. of your world around you that looks an awful

  196. lot like God and an awful lot like what he is

  197. building within his kingdom. The things that

  198. he stands for have come into this space. And

  199. so in this moment, you have this big purpose

  200. mission. And then the very next verse is this,

  201. give us today our daily bread. Hey God, would

  202. you give us what we need today? It takes it from

  203. this big lofty, and then notice what happens

  204. next, verse 12. And forgive us our debts as we

  205. also have forgiven our debtors. Anyone that you've

  206. ever had to walk the path of forgiveness, you

  207. know how large forgiveness is, right? Like this

  208. idea goes from the big purpose mission of what

  209. God always intended to, hey, would you give us

  210. what we need back up to... This idea of forgiveness

  211. that cost Jesus, cost God his very life to provide

  212. forgiveness. And we're claiming that forgiveness

  213. in prayer. So again, back to this huge theological

  214. scope. And then the very next thing he says is

  215. this. This is how you should pray. And lead us

  216. not into temptation, but deliver us from the

  217. evil one. Now we're into the cosmic battle of

  218. the universe between God and his enemy. Like,

  219. would you protect? So you have in the same prayer.

  220. You have the big vastness of God, right? Like

  221. you're the name above all other names. You've

  222. got this heaven crashing to earth purpose, mission,

  223. co -manage. The earth would be shaped by the

  224. kingdom of God. Your kingdom come, your will.

  225. And then out of that, you get this moment where

  226. it's like, and give us what we need. Give us

  227. today our daily bread. And then we're back to

  228. this big. vast forgiveness, hardest thing to

  229. do. One of the hardest things to do, if we're

  230. honest, being human, forgive another person,

  231. right? And yet the God of the universe has forgiven

  232. us. And so out of that, and then you have this

  233. cosmic battle. You have the hinge point of this

  234. prayer is found in the dirt of today. This is

  235. Jesus teaching us how to pray. And he goes, hey,

  236. your mission and purpose is God's pulling you

  237. back. You've got so much purpose to your life.

  238. You matter so much because you're shaping the

  239. kingdom of God. And you also give us today our

  240. daily bread. It's a daily bread kind of prayer.

  241. You know what I love about daily bread kind of

  242. prayer? Is daily bread. renounces the idea that

  243. God is distant. Here's what I mean, right? Like,

  244. cause sometimes we can think like God is, God

  245. is busy, you guys. He's running the universe.

  246. He don't have time to worry about the little

  247. things of life. God doesn't really have time

  248. to worry about if your football swag matches

  249. or not. God doesn't have time to worry about

  250. if you got that parking space. God doesn't have

  251. time to worry about your eyebrows. God's got

  252. other things he's doing. And if we're not careful,

  253. we can make God distant. God's out there. He

  254. only shows up in your life for the big things.

  255. He only shows up for the kingdom come prayers.

  256. But what Jesus teaches us is what? Give us today

  257. our daily bread, which pulls God from distant

  258. and brings him to the present, to the dirt. under

  259. your feet right now, the needs you walk through

  260. the door with. I like it. It renounces this idea

  261. that God's just out there. He don't really care

  262. what you do today. That's not true. Jesus teaches

  263. us that what? That in the daily bread prayer,

  264. we pull God into the present. Daily bread prayers

  265. renounce that God is distant and it brings him

  266. into the present of your life right here, right

  267. now. And what I think Jesus is doing with this,

  268. there's something much greater going on with

  269. the daily bread prayer. Because daily bread prayers,

  270. think about them, right? Like the idea of daily

  271. bread. What do you need today to live the life

  272. that God gave you? Like what is it in your life

  273. that you go, hey, this is a need today. And God,

  274. right? Like that's an idea of a daily bread prayer

  275. that I'm just going to tell God what I need to

  276. be able to live the life that he's put me in.

  277. Then on top of that. Right? There's this repetition.

  278. It's a daily bread. In fact, daily bread prayers,

  279. when you get into the original language, it's

  280. not a, I wake up and I say it. It's a continuous

  281. throughout my day, moment by moment, I'm inviting

  282. the God of the universe into the dust of my day.

  283. Right? Like the idea that God is meeting me in

  284. the midst of the real time things that are happening

  285. in my life. It's a daily consistent. What do

  286. you need today? But I think there's something

  287. else going on here. What I mean is this. I think

  288. it's connected back to where we were last week.

  289. If you remember last week, we were in Genesis,

  290. and we talked about this idea that your kingdom

  291. come, your will be done, is connecting to the

  292. overarching reason for humanity even existing.

  293. Well, I think this week, with a daily bread prayer,

  294. that what daily bread prayers are doing is they're

  295. found in what happens in chapter 3 of Genesis.

  296. Verse 1 says this, Now the serpent was more crafty

  297. than any of the wild animals the Lord had made.

  298. What you need to know if you're not familiar

  299. with the Bible is that this is a moment where

  300. the enemy of God, who is Satan, has taken the

  301. form of a serpent, and in the form of a serpent

  302. has showed up to his perfect creation, and now

  303. he's going to have a conversation with the humans.

  304. He said to the woman, did God really say you

  305. must not eat from any tree in the garden? The

  306. woman said to the serpent, we may eat a fruit

  307. from the trees of the garden, but God did say

  308. you must not eat from the tree that is in the

  309. middle of the garden and you must not touch it

  310. or you will die. Now, chapter two, we know that

  311. God didn't say that. She embellishes, she adds

  312. to it to try and add clarity, right? Notice what

  313. the enemy does. The enemy jumps on that. You

  314. will not certainly die, the serpent said to the

  315. woman, for God knows that when you eat from it,

  316. your eyes will be opened and you will be like

  317. what? God. You're not going to die. You will

  318. be like God, knowing good and evil. When the

  319. woman saw that the fruit of the tree. was good

  320. for food and pleasing to the eye and also desirable

  321. for gaining wisdom. She took some of it, some

  322. and ate it. She also gave some to her husband

  323. who was with her and he ate it. Then the eyes

  324. of both of them were open and they realized they

  325. were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together

  326. and made coverings for themselves. So what you

  327. get is you get the enemy of God showing up. And

  328. the enemy of God brings lies to the humans, which

  329. what happens in that moment, the enemy or the

  330. humans follow those lies. They believe what they

  331. are told. And what you end up with is now the

  332. humans doing something they have never done before,

  333. experiencing things they've never experienced

  334. before because they bought into the lie of the

  335. enemy. Here's what I'd like to propose to you.

  336. That when we say, give us. give us our daily

  337. bread, there is far more going on than you realize.

  338. Here's what I mean. The idea of asking, right?

  339. The idea that you would ask someone for something.

  340. If I was to come to you and ask you for the keys

  341. to your car, right? Because I got to walk home.

  342. I'm taking all control, right? I'm making myself

  343. vulnerable. to bring you into my story and what?

  344. I'm placing my need in your hands and you have

  345. the choice, you have the power, you have the

  346. determination, you have the option to grant or

  347. not, to disappoint or make me very happy, right?

  348. Like you have that in your hands. Asking naturally

  349. makes us vulnerable, which guess what? As humans,

  350. that's why we don't like it. We don't like to

  351. be vulnerable. We don't like to be in, four -letter

  352. word, need. There is not anybody in this room

  353. that goes, oh, I like to be needy. In fact, we

  354. use needy as a bad term, right? Like, oh, you're

  355. so needy, right? It's a negative. And in this

  356. context, we're told by God to what? To ask because

  357. you have need. Okay, now, bigger picture. What

  358. is happening in a daily bread prayer is you,

  359. you are declaring war on the enemy's lies in

  360. your life. Daily bread prayers, the most simple

  361. of simple of simple prayer, declares war on the

  362. enemy's lies in your life. Here's what I mean.

  363. Maybe this will help us catch it. You ever played

  364. the game war, anybody? Right? Like you're going

  365. to take a deck of cards. You divide them up evenly.

  366. Give one stack to one person. One stack to another

  367. person. Right? And then if you haven't played,

  368. here's how it goes. You take turns flipping a

  369. card. And you flip a card. And if the other card

  370. is higher than yours, that person wins. Right?

  371. I wonder, I wonder in our declaration of war

  372. by our daily bread prayers, here's what I mean.

  373. We declare war on the lies of the enemy. So the

  374. enemy plays his first card, right? The enemy

  375. plays his first card. That you can be God. Right?

  376. You be your own God. You do you. You don't have

  377. to sit under the authority of God. You, you can

  378. be your own God. It's your life. You can be the

  379. supreme being of your life. You don't need, isn't

  380. it interesting, a daily bread prayer. Remember

  381. how it starts? Our Father, and if you're like

  382. me, you learned it in another language, who art

  383. in heaven. I don't know why we put art in there,

  384. but there you go. Our Father in heaven. Your

  385. name is higher than any other. So simply, simply,

  386. according to Jesus, when I go and I go, hey,

  387. God, I'm hungry. Can you provide? What did I

  388. just do? I go, you are God. And I am not. God,

  389. I submit to your authority. This need reminds

  390. me that you are God. And so I come with the daily

  391. bread prayer. I declare war on the lie of the

  392. enemy, that I have to be God, that I have to

  393. be all the attributes that you are. I deny that.

  394. And what I actually do is I just declare you

  395. are God. Simply by going, can you give me today

  396. what I need? Because if not, I'm just talking

  397. to Bluey in the sky, right? Right? If not, I'm

  398. just talking to whatever. But when I frame up

  399. who I'm actually asking, what I've instantly

  400. done is gone, I am not God, you are God. So therefore,

  401. I win this hand on the enemy's lies. The enemy

  402. throws out the idea that, hey, you're in control.

  403. You know what's interesting in the fall? And

  404. when I say fall, when sin entered the world and

  405. every single human that was born from that point,

  406. guess what? We were all born control freaks.

  407. Some of you more so than others. We're not judging.

  408. That's okay. But we all love to be in control,

  409. whether you admit it or not. Some of you are

  410. just not good at hiding it. Other people are

  411. good at hiding it. But you know that we all love

  412. control because when you are out of control,

  413. watch the response of the person. And you notice,

  414. you notice. We love being in control. We like

  415. to manage. And what the enemy tells us is, hey,

  416. you're fully in control. You can manage your

  417. world. You can hold all the cards in all the

  418. places and you can do all the right things. And

  419. here's how you do it. And just in case you really

  420. need help, there's chat GPT and you can ask it

  421. how to become rich and it'll tell you all the

  422. steps and you're in control of your destiny.

  423. The enemy plays the lie that you can have control

  424. over your life. And so what does a daily bread

  425. prayer do? It reminds me that God's in control.

  426. God, I don't got this. Isn't it interesting,

  427. you guys? We're so fragile. You know how I know?

  428. You'll be hungry by dinner. You know how disconnected

  429. we are from God's control over our daily bread?

  430. That we have these things called credit cards.

  431. Because if you get too hungry and you don't have

  432. money, well, I'll just put it on the credit card.

  433. But it was never meant to be that way. You see,

  434. I think what society has done and what the enemy

  435. has done a great job of is actually you're in

  436. control and you can manage your own way. Just

  437. go back. Just go back. Most of human history

  438. has been reliant upon rain. Because if it didn't

  439. rain, nothing grew. And if it didn't grow, you

  440. didn't eat. Right. So the food is supposed to

  441. be a reminder, like just a simple thing like

  442. food. We're not even talking about your health.

  443. We're not even talking about finances like all

  444. of those go into it. We're not talking about

  445. the relationships that you're trying to control.

  446. See, when I release a relationship to God, hey,

  447. God, I'm not doing well at controlling this person

  448. like we think that's a good thing. Right. Like

  449. that should work out. I'm reminded that the enemy's

  450. lie is that I have control and what I realize

  451. is God's in control. And so. I win that hand.

  452. Two nothing in case you keep in score. So the

  453. enemy, another one of his lies, independence.

  454. You guys are Americans. I've learned that you

  455. love your what? Oh, you guys are all, man, you're

  456. in church. You should not be lying. You love

  457. your independence. You know how I know? You have

  458. a day to celebrate your independence. England's

  459. no better. Trust me. They got their own ways

  460. to celebrate it. Why? Because the enemy lies

  461. to us that we don't need anybody else. We can

  462. be independent. We can control things. We can,

  463. right? And so what happens with independence

  464. is it also pushes you away from people. Right?

  465. Like all of a sudden, I don't need you. I don't

  466. need God. I don't need because I'm independent

  467. of all of that. And what a daily prayer, a daily

  468. bread prayer does is it goes, God, I am deeply

  469. independent on you. Right? It's just the words

  470. that I got to ask God to provide something instantly,

  471. instantly frames up that I am dependent on you

  472. to provide. That in my independence, I can't

  473. even do a little thing. And so God, I'm deeply

  474. dependent. Now you go back to creation. That's

  475. how we were intended to be, dependent on God.

  476. What does the enemy come along and do? Go, no,

  477. you don't need to be dependent on God. You got

  478. this. You can be God. You can figure this out.

  479. Three nothing. The enemy's lie is that God's

  480. not trustworthy. You can't trust him. And what

  481. does the enemy do? He'll tell you some story,

  482. bring something to mind. He'll tell you a moment

  483. where it should have worked out this way and

  484. it didn't work out that way. So really, God,

  485. is God trustworthy? What is he doing to the woman

  486. in the garden? He's showing up and going, I don't

  487. think you can trust God because he didn't really

  488. tell you the whole truth because he said you

  489. would die. You ain't really gonna die. What is

  490. he doing? He's taking the God and he's shaping

  491. God into this image that, God, you are not trustworthy.

  492. And what does a daily bread prayer do? It goes,

  493. God, I trust you. My trust is in you. If you

  494. don't show up, God, if you don't show up, this

  495. thing I'm facing, it's going to be too much.

  496. There's this idea that the enemy wants to tell

  497. you you can't trust God and what a daily bread

  498. prayer does. As simple as it is, is it puts me

  499. in a posture of trust to this God that I am not,

  500. who I am dependent on, right? And so we win that

  501. hand. He wants you to be self -sufficient. He

  502. wants you to be self -made. He wants you to believe

  503. that you can just do you, you be you. You can

  504. be whatever you wanna be. You work it out. Your

  505. future's dependent on you and nobody else. And

  506. so we have all these like life coaches and books,

  507. self -help books, and all of them are gonna tell

  508. you how to be the best version of you because

  509. you don't need nobody. You just need you and

  510. you can be self -sufficient and self -made and

  511. everyone will look up to you and go, wow. You

  512. were never meant to be like that. You know what

  513. you were meant to be? So we, in a daily bread

  514. prayer, go, God, I'm reliant on you. You were

  515. never meant to be self -sufficient. You were

  516. meant to be God -reliant. You were designed to

  517. rely on a God who is good in nature, in his character,

  518. who has your best. My best, who is bending the

  519. universe to look like his kingdom come and his

  520. will be done. And you are invited through daily

  521. bread prayers to align your soul to what? To

  522. say, God, I'm reliant on you. And so what happens

  523. is, what happens is we're at five nothing now.

  524. I love that. Philippians chapter four. And if

  525. you've been around church and you're hearing

  526. a message on prayer, you're like, I knew he'd

  527. go to this. You're right. I'm predictable. But

  528. what's interesting is I think these verses define

  529. for us what a daily prayer, daily bread prayer

  530. looks like. So the daily bread prayer that is

  531. declaring war on the enemy's lies, this is what

  532. it sounds like. Starts in verse four, rejoice

  533. in the Lord always. I say it again, rejoice.

  534. Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord

  535. is near. So there's the premise of what he's

  536. about to say, that the Lord is near. He is in

  537. the details. He is in the dirt of your day. The

  538. Lord is near. And then it says, do not be anxious

  539. about anything. Okay, so just a quick pause on

  540. being anxious, right? The enemy wants to convince

  541. you of all those lies. And guess where those

  542. lies lead? To you believing you have control,

  543. to you trying to manage your life, to you being

  544. overwhelmed, exhausted, and anxious. How do I

  545. know that? Take a look, take a survey of our

  546. society that is so advanced. Take a look at our

  547. society and look at the rates of... anxiousness,

  548. overwhelmness, depression, exhaustion, suicide

  549. is higher than it's ever been. How are we doing?

  550. Right, like something's gotta change. And then

  551. what it's getting at here, when it talks about

  552. anxious, it's like a windshield, right? Like

  553. you drive around here, we put stuff on the roads

  554. to help us not slide off the roads, but inevitably

  555. what happens? One flies up and what does it do?

  556. Hits your window and you're like, oh. I got a

  557. little buddy now. And you're like, it's not that

  558. bad. And all of a sudden you get another one.

  559. But it's okay because they're not hanging out.

  560. But you're like, I should do something about

  561. that. And once you know it, a third buddy shows

  562. up and all of a sudden it just... That's the

  563. picture of anxiety. It shatters us. It separates

  564. us. And that's what it's getting at here is the

  565. effects of believing the enemy's lies. The effects

  566. of sin in our world shows up that we are shattered

  567. on the inside. You can know Jesus and be shattered

  568. on the inside. Right? Like this isn't, oh, well,

  569. if you knew Jesus, then everything would be better.

  570. No, you can know Jesus and still be living under

  571. the enemy's lies, which is why Jesus teaches

  572. us to what? Pray daily bread prayers. Why? Because

  573. daily bread prayers not only declare war on the

  574. enemy's lies, they declare war on the enemy's

  575. effects and sin's effects. Here's what I mean.

  576. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every

  577. situation, that sounds like all of life, every

  578. day, kind of daily bread kind of stuff. By prayer,

  579. that first word for prayer there is prayer. Just

  580. talking to God. So anxious, enter into talking

  581. to God, which is community, which is relational.

  582. Enter in and talk to God. To which, then it says,

  583. and petition. If you were here the first week,

  584. we talked about a word called supplication. That's

  585. the word petition. What that means is this, that

  586. it's the emotion of the moment combined with

  587. the. urgency. So I'm just talking to God, but

  588. what's combined is the emotion that I have and

  589. the urgency of the moment. Remember daily bread

  590. prayers. If you're hungry and you have no resource

  591. for food, how desperate are you? I got to eat

  592. God, right? Like you're crying out to him. It's

  593. urgent and there's emotion to it. If my marriage

  594. just fell apart, guess what? There's emotion

  595. and there's urgency. That's that idea of petition,

  596. right? That you would be talking to God, but

  597. in the midst of it, bring the urgency and the

  598. emotion to it. And then it carries on. It says,

  599. with thanksgiving, we're gonna talk about that

  600. next week, present your requests to God. You

  601. know what that word request is? Be specific.

  602. Tell God exactly what you need. Because sometimes,

  603. sometimes, I don't know about you, we're real

  604. vague. What do I mean by that? God, just be present

  605. with them. He's already present. So how about

  606. instead of just, God, be present, we go, God,

  607. I know you're there. Will you do this for them?

  608. Be specific, right? Like that's what that word

  609. means, request. Be specific. So be urgent, bring

  610. the emotion in a conversation with God and, and

  611. tell him exactly. What you need. And notice what

  612. happens. Remember, this is waging war on what?

  613. The effects of the enemy, the effects of sin.

  614. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding,

  615. will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ

  616. Jesus. And the peace of God. So wait, I came

  617. with just a daily bread prayer. And what I did

  618. is I waged war on what? The effects. Because

  619. I've been believing the enemy's lies. So what

  620. happens is I wage war on all those lies. I'm

  621. not believing those no more. God, I'm going to

  622. trust you. I'm dependent on you. God's in control.

  623. You are God. I'm not. And what happens, what

  624. happens is the effects of sin in my life by bringing

  625. my daily bread, by bringing them into the dirt,

  626. what happens is the peace of God, the peace of

  627. God, the shalom of God, the wholeness, wholeness,

  628. remember, if anxiety is to split apart, wholeness

  629. is to be put back together. And this is how easy,

  630. one more story we've done. This is how easy Jesus

  631. says it is to pray. Luke chapter 11, right before

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  632. this is the prayer that we were just talking

  633. about. The prayer that ties us back to the purpose,

  634. ties us into this cosmic battle and brings us

  635. to daily bread in the middle. This is the next

  636. thing that Jesus said in Luke. Chapter 11, verse

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  637. five. Then Jesus said to them, suppose you have

  638. a friend and you go to him at midnight and say,

  639. friend, lend me three loaves of bread. A friend

  640. of mine on a journey has come to me and I have

  641. no food to offer him. And suppose the one inside

  642. answers, don't bother me. The door is already

  643. locked. My children and I are in bed. I can't

  644. get up and give you anything. Anybody else go,

  645. that's me. You come to my house and I'm in bed

  646. and my kids are in bed and everything's locked.

  647. Go away. I tell you, even though he will not

  648. get up and give you the bread because of friendship,

  649. yet because of your shameless audacity, he will

  650. surely get up and give you as much as you need.

  651. Jesus goes on to say after this, he compares

  652. it to a father, that you earthly fathers know

  653. how to give good gifts. Imagine, imagine, and

  654. you're broken, right? Like you're sinful. You're

  655. selfish. Imagine how much a perfect heavenly

  656. father can give good gifts and wants to give

  657. good gifts to his kids. That's what he compares

  658. it to. But how did you get there? He goes, this

  659. is easy. Praying is as easy as going to your

  660. neighbor. Got any flour? I got to make some bread.

  661. It's that easy. Jesus, the prayers that fight

  662. the enemy's lies and effects in your life, Jesus

  663. goes, it's as easy as going to your neighbor

  664. and going, hey, I got some guests coming over,

  665. and I'm just wondering, we're out of flour, could

  666. I borrow some? It's that easy. Now, what that

  667. teaches me is anyone can do that. That teaches

  668. me you can do that. Sometimes when it comes to

  669. prayer, I think, and we're going to fight the

  670. enemy's lies and all that. I think we go, oh,

  671. okay, I need a priest. I need a pastor. I need

  672. somebody who's in a position of the church. No,

  673. no, no. What Jesus teaches is you go ask the

  674. neighbor for flour. You go to your heavenly father

  675. and go, I need some flour. And so here's what

  676. we're going to do. We're going to end. with a

  677. time of you praying, daily bread kind of prayers.

  678. What do you need? You posturing yourself to ask

  679. your heavenly father for what you need. What's

  680. in the dirt of your day, so to speak? And you're

  681. just gonna ask God, hey, here's what I need today.

  682. Here's what my daily bread is today. Would you

  683. provide? Would you show up? Would you give? This

  684. is just really simple. God, would you give flower

  685. today? And then here's what we're gonna do. We're

  686. gonna worship after. Can I just share something

  687. with you guys? Some of you are prone to leave

  688. at the end, like music starts and you're like,

  689. I'm out of here. Now, I know some of you gotta

  690. be places. I get that. I understand that. But

  691. the team that God has entrusted to your spiritual

  692. care works so hard, pour time and effort and

  693. conversations into what happens after, after

  694. what you may think is a throwaway song we believe

  695. the Holy Spirit wants to use in your life. And

  696. some of you, it pains me because you miss it.

  697. You miss it. And we believe that in your response,

  698. God is going to move in your soul. So don't miss

  699. what God has for you. So we're going to spend

  700. time just intentionally praying, and then we're

  701. going to worship. But the next moments are yours

  702. to have a daily bread prayer with God.
